Rowing Myth: You must ALWAYS keep the heels down during the entire rowing stroke. Rowing Fact: Not everyone is flexible and the most important thing, all coaches agree, is that the rower gets fully compressed – shins vertical to the ground/ shoulders in front of hips. Of course, there is huge variation among masters athletes in their range of motion. If your heels must come up to allow you to get compressed, that’s fine. That said, it’s important to know that maintaining pressure on the balls of the feet during compression is essential. The next motion, after the catch and front of the stroke has initiated, is pushing the heels down and driving with your whole foot. To accelerate smoothly, you need to maintain constant force on the footboards. My sources on this are directly from the leading manufacturer in rowing machines, Concept 2. Roworx fitness group rowing instructor profile featuring George Pirod. George started playing baseball with the influence of the Dodgers when he was younger and then he switched to tennis when he was 8 years old successfully winning some national tournaments. When George turned 17 he started doing downhill mountain bike winning 5 national championships and one panamerican cup. He moved to Long Beach 5 years ago and but sadly found out that he had diabetes. George was bummed out but he was introduced to rowing when he attended an indoor rowing class with Jack Nunn that totally changed his life. George lost 50 pounds and felt better than ever. Rowing changed his life and throughout all the sports he’s experienced George attributes rowing to one of the most gratifying workouts of his life. George loves the camaraderie during his Roworx group fitness rowing classes and considers them as family. Just after 7 months rowing he was 2nd place at the beach sprints competition and then after 2 years he made it to the world championships. ‘Workout Wednesday’ Roworx Virtual Indoor Rowing Class. Today will be a tough workout so be prepared! We are going to do a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout designed to specifically improve your 2K speed, strength, and endurance. It might seem simple and easy but believe me it isn’t. This workout will take you to the limit and beyond. Remember that it is up to you to make sure you are giving everything you have during this anaerobic workout. We will begin with a 20 - minute standard warm up followed by some 10 stroke intervals. Then move into the core of workout which is going to be 12 X :45 Seconds On (Full Blast As High And Hard As Possible) Followed By A 1:10 Rest. Splits should be 5-7 seconds faster than your 2K race split. Watts should be 50% or double your body weight if possible. Good luck and Godspeed! Technique Tip Tuesday There is only one way to breathe when rowing. Wether it’s on the water or on the machine it only makes sense to breathe out at the front (catch) of the stroke and at the back (finish) of the stroke. The harder you breathe out ... the more you will automatically breathe in. You must focus on breathing while rowing because this is not as automatic as you think. My father, John Nunn, had a breathing coach for the Olympics while he rowed the USA 🇺🇸 double sculls boat to a bronze medal 🥉 finish at the notoriously high altitude 1968 Mexico City 🇲🇽 Olympic Games. This is the most efficient way to breathe while rowing.
