An El-P record of your choosing, and Cannibal Ox’s “Cold Vein“

surprisingly enough, I haven't actually listened to the Cold Vein. I should get around to it one of these days. As for the El-P album, I'll take Cancer 4 Cure because I usually talk up I'll Sleep When You're Dead and it's good to switch it up

the first song from this album I heard: not sure. Might have just been Request Denied, but maybe I went for Tougher Colder Killer because of Mike? idk, it was years ago

do I own the album?: nope, just streaming

my favorite song: Request Denied. It's a perfect intro, with the instrumental building up and up, the Burroughs sample followed by the drop, a further buildup, and then one of El's best verses of all time. In some ways I'd call it the last gasp of I'll Sleep When You're Dead's lyrical style. He gets more straightforward on most of the rest of the album, and has continued with RTJ, but on Request Denied he's still doing that perfect balance of abstract and concrete meaning

my least favorite song: The Jig Is Up. there's a few other meh ones but I've never been a fan of El-P's songs about relationships, so that puts it over the edge. He's quite a bit better than Ghostface, but that's a low bar.

a song I didn’t like at first, but now do: maybe Drones over Bklyn? It was one of the songs I initially wanted to like because of that one RTJ1 line, but I wasn't a huge fan of the piano in the beat and I expected it to be more political than it was. I don't know if I ever disliked it, but I've come around on the beat, and the first verse especially is really good.

a song I used to like, but now don’t: hmmm. the songs I don't really like are mostly ones where their flaws were evident from the beginning. Tougher Colder Killer has probably dropped the most in my estimation, but it's still one of the better songs on the album

my favorite lyric: If I may quote a large chunk of Request Denied:

overall rating out of 10: somewhere in the high 7 range. It's got a few mediocre songs, and even on most of the good ones I would say it represents a step down for El-P lyrically, but a step down lyrically is still damn good overall, the production is great, and there are some incredible features (see: the one I quoted above).

Well, it's been a #RunTheJewels kinda life since El-P and Killer Mike hooked up to make RTJ1. This record, RTJ3, was a must have when we heard it was coming. Then, at Christmas, they decided to give everyone the MP3 album for free! Dudes, if you guys are into #HipHop, it doesn't get a whole lot better than these guys. We finally got a hold of the vinyl, and needless to say, this thing is on steady rotation. Then, we find out this year's @slossfest lineup includes none other than RTJ!!! Not more than a couple weeks later we got news of a RTJ beer. Mother F*cker!!! Run The Jewels just took an even bigger part of our heart. This brew, #StayGold, of course isn't distributed in Alabama, so we had to use some connections. Our homie @_stevenj_ came through like a champ! Today was the day to spin some vinyl and crack open this tallboy. I grabbed my RTJ chain, put the record on the turntable, cranked the volume up and started to sip this GOLD colored brew. Not hard to imagine, and I know they wouldn't have it any other way, but big dank hop aromas fill the air as soon as I cracked the can open. Flavor is very similar, with some pungent citrus and resinous pine notes. If I had to give the flavor a color it'd be green, not gold, but that's a good thing. Interboro did a good job with this one, however there is a little flaw in my opinion. The brew is a little thin and almost watery on the back end. That being said, it's definitely not a deal breaker. I'm just as excited drinking this one as I was before I opened it.
