HI. I just have to gush for a minute, because it was a really shitty weekend and I’m decidedly avoiding thinking about the reality of my life so I finally fell down the rabbit hole that is the SNL 50th anniversary content.

YOOOOOO. The thing is, I, like all weirdos, grew up on Saturday Night Live. When I finally got a tv in my bedroom I’d make sure everyone was asleep on Saturday night and I’d turn it down real low and I would just get sucked in to whatever was going on that week. It was edgy, it was funny, it was always on point even when it wasn’t, and as we all know, SNL has given me some of the great loves of my life. 

Andy Samberg. Jason Sudeikis. Bill Hader. Will fucking Ferrell. TINA FEY. Amy Poehler. Goddamn Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon. MYA RUDOPLH. Jimmy, my hometown baby, Fallon. 

SNL is just so absolutely special. It’s this powerhouse, cultural beacon that plucks fucking crazy comedians from obscurity and gives then a platform and lets them do weird things with celebrities and highlights just the strangest smattering of musicians. It’s the perfect amount of controlled chaos. I really don’t know what part of my brain it feeds, but it’s just so STUPIDLY human.

When ringtones were a thing, I had a text tone of Will Ferrell doing Robert Goulet. I had no idea who Robert Goulet actually WAS, but Will’s impression for some reason was incredible. I can honestly still hear it, it was that sound bite of him saying “dinkle donkle dinkle donkle, someone’s calling you! GOULET!” Like, why? WHY did that make me so happy? 

Literally, not even a few months ago I posted a Weekend Update video in my engineering team’s slack channel to explain that I have ‘VOICE IMMODULATION, TINA!’ because of how insanely loud I can be. And that wasn’t even the first time I’ve used that sketch to get people to understand why I am the way I am.

I fell disgustingly in love with Lonely Island, and I still very decidedly am - I probably know all of their albums by heart. I was deeply obsessed with Jimmy and Tina hosting Weekend Update, and then even more deeply obsessed with Tina and Amy hosting Weekend Update; I’m pretty sure I’ve formed world views based on their snark.

 Keenan Thompson has created some of my all time favorite bits, and I respect the fuck out of him that he does them for a bit and then never does them again. I still sometimes sing my favorite song from “Deep House Dish” because ‘THIS IS MY SIGNATURE LOOOOK! And I’m gonna WEAAAAR THIS OUT!’ I also still scream ‘WHAT UP WITH THAT?’ 

The point is, this show is ingrained in me in a VERY real way. And I’m so thankful for it. And if you are too, at the very least, you need to watch the 50th anniversary special. There is a lot of other content you should watch too - the concert special, the documentary about the music of SNL - but good lord, the live anniversary show is two and a half hours of fantasticness. 

Debbie Downer. The Laurence Welk Show. Keenan scaring kids straight with his prisoner persona. Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon. BRONX BEAT! Featuring Linda from fucking Coffee Talk!!!!! Adam Sandler singing his fucking heart out about 50 years of the SNL experience, with more emotion I think I’ve ever seen from him. A digital short about the crippling anxiety that fuels the entire goddamn show. 

Bill Murray’s ranking of the top ten Weekend Update hosts. The girl you shouldn’t have started a conversation with at a party. Kate McKinnon’’s frequent pantless alien abductee, whose mother was played by Meryl. Fucking. Streep. 

I’m honestly just like vibrating out of my skin, that was exactly what I needed. And I’m sure that some people might just look at it like an excuse for celebrities to pat themselves on the back for no reason, but truly, there’s magic in this show. There’s legacy. It’s just…pure joy. People being absolutely ridiculous in an attempt to get someone, ANYONE, to laugh. Because it’s fun. Because it feeds us.

Comedy is healing, you guys. It’s art. And SNL has given us 50 years of beautiful, stupid, irreverent creation. That should be celebrated; let them be proud of this monstrous, sparkling, inane thing they made. It’s so, so, so remarkable.

Like I said, I had a hard few days, I was going through some things that made me act the fuck out and I lost control of myself, but then I sat down and watched SNL appreciate it’s own existence, and it helped to bring me back to who I am. Is that ridiculous? Probably. But that’s the magic of content. And I’m so thankful for it.

Dream Productions: dal mondo di Inside Out, il meta-cinema per raccontare i sogni

La mente di Riley si trasforma in uno studio di Hollywood per mostrare come nascono i sogni e gli incubi. Ambientata a cavallo trai i due film Pixar, la serie è in streaming su Disney+.

Inside Out 2 è stato uno dei successi del 2024, e quindi era palese che il franchise venisse sfruttato ulteriormente da Disney Pixar. Non solo un possibile nuovo film in cantiere (ancora non ufficialmente confermato) che continuerà a raccontare la vita della protagonista Riley mentre entra nell'età adulta, ma anche una serie animata in streaming, pensata per Disney+. Arriva quindi Dream Productions, lo spin-off ambientato nel mezzo delle due pellicole, che vuole farci scoprire un'altra parte del vasto inconscio della ragazzina: il mondo dei sogni.

Da Inside Out a Dream Productions: ovvero, la materia di cui sono fatti i sogni

"If you can dream it, you can do it" diceva il buon Walt Disney mentre fondava quello che sarebbe diventato uno dei più importanti studi d'animazione della storia del cinema. La settima arte come sogno ad occhi aperti, come magia per immagini che cattura l'attenzione e i cuori degli spettatori attraverso il linguaggio dell'animazione. Non dovrebbe sorprendere quindi che, cento anni dopo, la visione della Pixar che immagina i sogni proprio come se fossero una grande casa di produzione hollywoodiana.

Le due protagoniste della serie

Non manca davvero nulla in questo mondo immaginifico ed immaginato: dalla regista che sembra non riuscire a stare al passo coi tempi, al giovane cineasta appena uscito dalla scuola di cinema che vuole distruggere tutti gli archetipi appena studiati fino all'assistente alla regia che non aspetta altro che qualcuno si accorga del suo talento e le dia finalmente una possibilità. L'obiettivo di tutti? Mettere in scena il prossimo sogno di successo, con tanto di targhetta a cui ambire dalla produttrice-capo!

Questione di stile nello spin-off

Se Inside Out 2 aggiungeva nuove emozioni all'equazione per mostrare la complessità e la crescita della mente di Riley, Dream Productions riesce incredibilmente a mescolare svariati tipi di regia per mostrare il passaggio dall'infanzia all'adolescenza che avviene tra i due capitoli.

Una messa in scena portentosa

I suoi ricordi hanno bisogno di un'ulteriore elaborazione, quindi Gioia e le altre emozioni li inviano alla Dream Productions. C'è il mockumentary in stile The Office e Parks and Recreation per conoscere i pensieri più reconditi e le opinioni delle personalità coinvolte e c'è la regia-nella-regia dei sogni e degli incubi insieme a quella "standard" della stessa serie animata che ci porta in giro per gli studios.

Voci da sogno nella serie animata

A livello tecnico, quindi, la serie fa passi da gigante e mostra una grande poliedricità creativa da parte del creatore Mike Jones e della produttrice Jaclyn Simon. Con un'evoluzione anche nel corso dei quattro episodi che compongono lo show, per mostrare i diversi tipi di sonno che ognuno di noi passa abitualmente, compreso il sonnambulismo.

Poi, le voci originali scelte sono perfette: Paula Pell (vi dice qualcosa Girls5Eva?), Ally Maki e Richard Ayoade sono Paula, Janelle e Xeni, e non manca nemmeno qualche guest star preziosa come Maya Rudoplh. Peccato per il character design che è la vera pecca, lasciando un po' perplessi rispetto all'iconicità delle emozioni che abbiamo imparato a conoscere ed amare al cinema. Si riflette sul tempo che passa, sul bisogno di eredità, su quanto la notte influenzi davvero ciò che facciamo durante il giorno. Nel bene e nel male.

Conclusioni

Dream Productions: dal mondo di Inside Out è un ottimo prosieguo del franchise di successo che ha sbancato il botteghino mondiale con il sequel. Addentrandoci nei sogni di Riley, scopriamo un nuovo meccanismo di messa in scena dell’inconscio umano da parte degli autori. Non solo: la serie spin-off riesce addirittura a parlarci del terrore di Hollywood per il tempo che passa. La pecca? Il character design.

Okay I'll try and keep the plot as Concise as possible for Wild Arms

Around 1,000 years on the Planet known as Filgaia lived the Elws( basically elfs) and were they only people walking around until another group came to Filgaia the Neosapiens ( humans) who were forced to flee there own home world after a war happened on there Planet, the Elws being bros accepted them and the land was at peace until anothef race visited only they were a hostile invading force called Metal Demons. Beings made out of living Metal, that wished to conquer Filgaia so there ruler named Mother can basically sap the land of it's life ( It can also be gleamed that the Metal Demons were most likely the one that brought war to the humans home world). The Humans and Elws of course not wanting to lose there home fought back with the help of the spirits of Filgaia called Guardians each representing a different element, emotion, or item ( I.E Blades or Stars) the war was long and to help fight the Metal Demons the Elw created powerful machinary weapons that became known as ARM's and could only be wielded by certain people, along with the creations of the Golems powerful Automotons that held great strength. Though were flawed in the fact that they determined friend or foe by who controled them. So this led to another creation to fight aganist the Metal Demons, though for now lets leave that be as I will explain it more later for reasons, all you need to know now is that it failed. So an Elw Smith came up with another invention the Guardian Blade to defeat the Metal Demons. It ended up working, sending the Metal Demons to the suthern most part of Filgaia in exile, however it came at the cost of eating away at a part of the Planet's lifeforce causing the natural flora to wither away until barron wastelands were all that was left. Due too the Elw needing nature too survive and there distrust towards the humans after the war, they left for the Elw dimension leaving nehind all there cool tech, along with a lot of problems.

Though humanity managed to survive and flourish and fast forward a 1,000 years. Archeologists dig up artifacts from the Elw and explore temples that they built along with excavating the Golems that were left behind.

So let's speed up now that all the preamble is done.

Are story begins woth one 15 year old Rudolph Roughknight, the grandson of one Zepet Roughknight. Rudolph lives in Surf Village the place his grandfather setteled done in before his eventual passing and burial at a cliff's edge by Rudolph. Everything goes well for Rudolpb, when troubling news hits the village that a young boy went venturing into a nearby cave to look for mystical fruit called a Holy berry, which is said to cure any illness as the boy's father is very sick. Rudolph heads after the boy all the way to the caves depths, were he finds the boy. The boy asks Rudoplh to please get the Holy berry and Rudolph does so sucessfully and begins to leave with the boy. Bringing the kid out of the cave to safety, they are however stopped before the caves entrance by a very powerful Zombie, as the Holy berry was acting as seal to keep the Zombie from reaking any havoc. Rudolph having no choice brings out his ARM's the Hand Cannon and fights aganist the Zombie eventually having to throw the Holy berry back to seal back the Zombie. Though while the fight was happening the villagers came to the cave to save the boy and ended up seeing Rudolph's fight. This leads to all the villagers turning on Rudolph and telling him to leave the village immediately, due too the fact there is a belief held by a lot of people that those that wield the destructive ARM's are harbingers of destruction and this ends up scarring the villagers more than the Zombie. So forced to become a Drifter, Rudolph heads to the nearest Kingdom being Adelhyde, too hopefully find work were he ends up meeting two people, Jack Van Burace and Cecilia Lynn Adelhyde.

I'll end it here for now as this is gonna take another post to finish the recap, as there's still a lot even taking out all the in bewteen, so the recap will end in the next post

Here comes the trope of an innocent character getting banished for saving someone. I'm getting Lunar Knight vibes too. Rudolph sounds like he needs a hug because fuck those guys.
