Apple launches the iPhone 16e, a cheaper new version of the iPhone 16
By Lisa Eadicicco, CNN

Apple on Wednesday announced a cheaper new version of the iPhone 16 called the iPhone 16e, signaling a renewed push into the budget smartphone market for the tech giant. It’s also the first iPhone with a cellular modem designed by Apple, and the cheapest iPhone Apple currently sells that supports Apple Intelligence.
The iPhone 16e costs $599 and launches on February 28.
Adding Apple Intelligence on a cheaper iPhone could be crucial for putting the company’s AI tools in the hands of more consumers. Apple has faced increased competition from Google and Samsung in recent years, both in the budget smartphone market and in the AI space. Google’s cheaper Pixel A-series of phones have been well received, for example, and both Google and Samsung have prioritized updating Android devices with new AI features over the last year.
The launch also marks a shift away from the iPhone SE, the budget iPhone line Apple debuted in 2016 and last updated in 2022. The iPhone SE made up only a sliver of Apple’s iPhone market share, according to research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, which reports it accounted for just 5% of US iPhone sales as of December 2024.
The iPhone 16e, despite being more expensive than the SE, could be more appealing to those who want a device that feels more like Apple’s more recent phones. The iPhone SE was the last iPhone with a traditional home button and fingerprint sensor on the front, a longtime staple that Apple began shifting away from with the iPhone X in 2017.
Tumblr media
Apple announced the iPhone 16e on February 19.Apple
What the iPhone 16e can do
Apple claims the new 5G modem in the iPhone 16e is the “most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone.” The new modem is arriving more than five years after Apple acquired the majority of troubled chipmaker Intel’s smartphone modem business in 2019. Using its own modems makes Apple less reliant on partners and suppliers, giving it more control over product development and launch timing.
The iPhone 16e marks a long-awaited overhaul to Apple’s cheaper iPhone. The $429 iPhone SE, while less expensive, looked like the seven-year-old iPhone 8 and lacked features found on most new phones, such as face unlock and a nearly borderless screen. After Wednesday’s announcement, the iPhone SE is no longer available on Apple’s online store.
Unlike the iPhone SE, the iPhone 16e has a lot in common with the iPhone 16, bringing it up to speed with Apple’s current lineup. Both phones have a 6.1-inch screen, Face ID, a 48-megapixel camera and the Action button for programming shortcuts. However, the iPhone 16e is cheaper and it lacks a dedicated second camera for capturing wider shots and the Camera Control button for quickly accessing the camera.
It’s powered by the same processor as the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup, enabling it to run Apple Intelligence.
Apple Intelligence, which until now has only been available on the iPhone 16 family, 2023’s iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and certain iPads and Macs, is a blanket term that refers to a handful of AI-powered tools – such as the ability to generate emojis and images with a prompt, summarize notifications, and remove objects from photos as well as ChatGPT integration with Siri.
The popularity of ChatGPT following its late 2022 release sent a shockwave through the tech industry, prompting companies such as Microsoft, Google and Samsung to incorporate generative AI into their products.
But Apple was largely considered to be a latecomer to consumer-facing artificial intelligence. Like many tech companies, Apple has long used AI to power backend features, like camera modes, but didn’t begin rolling out Apple Intelligence until last fall. Apple Intelligence’s arrival on a cheaper device like the iPhone 16e signals the company sees AI as being a core part of its products moving forward.
Tech giants have positioned generative AI and chatbots as the next major evolution in how consumers use and interact with technology. Yet it’s unclear whether AI tools like Apple Intelligence will be compelling enough to drive smartphone upgrades, with Apple’s iPhone revenue falling short of Wall Street’s expectations in its fiscal first quarter of 2025.

last weekend with the birthday money i have, i have bought myself a nokia 2780 flip in navy blue.
i bought the last one on sale at target, for $79.99. i think still, it was a little too pricey, but it is factory unlocked, so ill give it that.
its small, cute, and a little flimsy.
cheap and cheerful like some people like to say.
i so excited that i unboxed it and put my verizon sim card in, on the ride home. it worked perfectly fine, and im really happy about that. ive been looking for a dumbphone for my digital minimalism needs, but i wasnt really too sure network compatibility wise.
Tumblr media
van gogh...
along side the nokia 2780, ive been using my old smartphone, a samsung galaxy a51 as a pseudo mp3 player.
what i did to this poor smartphone is kinda cool
install olauncher (light mode!)
universal adb debloater
remove apps i dont need anymore: contacts, phone, messages, etc
enable monochromacy screen settings
always on power saving mode
"sensors off" in developer settings
put a whole bunch of mp3s on it ... yo ho ho.. .arggh.. ahoy..
disable screen lock
wifi and bluetooth off, all the time.
koreader on f-droid (bless this app)
retro music on f-droid
and thats all!
simple little mp3 player that can read books too..
though, ive been wanting a real mp3 player or android dap, i think ill save up for that next, but for now, this will work fine.
lets see how long i keep this up... its quite fun for now.
thinking about it, i kinda want to live like hidamari sketch.. that lifestyle era of technology is just lovely.
see you next post! take care everyone - aoi, c. 2.11.25

Closing Your Digital Front Door Before Protesting
Tumblr media
As protests continue — and hopefully, continue to grow — there are some things to take into consideration.
First, it’s possible to quickly get striking, good looking signs inexpensively. I outlined how I made these superhero-themed signs back into 2018 in a blog post for about $5 each in this blog post: https://ideatrash.net/2018/03/howto-get-striking-and-inexpensive-foa.html
Tumblr media
However, the other thing to consider is digital security. ActivistChecklist and The Markup have good resources; I did something slightly different though, and I thought I’d outline that as well.
I had purchased an old Android phone a while back to serve as a barometric pressure sensor off of eBay; I’d won that bid for about $30. It doesn’t have a SIM card, which means that it can only use wifi, but also isn’t tied to me in any way through the cell modem. That wasn’t a problem for my original use for it, but also meant that the guidelines above had to be modified somewhat.
The basic guidelines — turning off biometric unlocking and a lengthy PIN — still hold. I also put my emergency contact phone numbers as the “owner information” on the Android lock screen, so that the numbers are visible without unlocking the phone. (The process may vary from model to model, but some guides and examples are here and here, or you can create a lockscreen photo that has the appropriate information. This is an adjunct to writing those numbers on your arm with a permanent marker.
I installed Organic Maps for directions (because I suck at land navigation). It works completely offline without any problems whatsoever, including looking up points of interest that are already on the map. It’s good enough for regular use as well, in my opinion.
The biggest problem/hurdle is communication. Without a SIM card, you’re reliant on bluetooth or wifi to send or receive data. I did not install Bridgefy — partially because of the required Google login, but more importantly, because it kept crashing. I also tried Briar, but while it installed fine, and even was able to add contacts between this phone and my regular one, no messages got back and forth either via wifi or bluetooth. Signal, my normal go-to, was unfortunately out of the question, because it seemed very unhappy trying to link a second phone as a device. So I ended up putting DeltaChat on this secondary phone, which while meaning I’d be reliant on wifi, does have encryption and can also just use email as a back end as well. Worst case scenario, it’s like I’m back in the 1990s, oh well.
I also have an XMPP server running that could also provide encryption via Conversations. I also have a Matrix server on a homelab that can bridge connections to other networks (including SMS and Signal) as well. While there’s a small break in the E2E encryption with that setup, that break happens entirely and only on a computer entirely under my control that’s sitting in a reasonably secure location. (Also, I think I can enable it, but I haven’t, since it’s literally just me on there.)
After doing all of that, I disabled and deactivated and force-stopped every other bit of Samsung and Google installed on the phone that I could.
I’m perfectly aware that this is not a perfect or impenetrable setup. Ultimately, the best digital security here is to not take your phone at all and rely on paper maps if needed. I made compromises based on my technical ability and how much inconvenience I am willing to accept in the name of security. I’d compare this to locking your doors at night instead of leaving the front door wide open. Someone can still break in, but it’s not trivial for them to do so.
Your security requirements, technical ability, and resources will vary from mine. Mine may change as the environment in the US becomes worse.
But take the time to consider what you are able to do and are comfortable with doing instead of walking to a protest or other action with your digital front door entirely open.

How to Handle Device Fragmentation in Android Game Development
Introduction
Android device fragmentation remains one of the biggest challenges for mobile game developers. With thousands of different devices running various Android versions, screen sizes, and hardware capabilities, creating a game that works flawlessly across the ecosystem can feel overwhelming. But don't worry this guide will walk you through practical strategies to tackle fragmentation head on and deliver an excellent gaming experience to all your users.
Tumblr media
Understanding Android Fragmentation
Before diving into solutions, let's clarify what we're dealing with. Android fragmentation includes:
Different screen sizes and resolutions
Varying hardware specs (CPU, GPU, RAM)
Multiple Android OS versions in use simultaneously
Manufacturer-specific UI modifications
Different sensor and input capabilities
For mobile game development, these variations can significantly impact performance, visuals, and gameplay experience.
Strategies for Handling Device Fragmentation
1. Implement Responsive Design
Make your game adapt to different screen sizes and resolutions by:
Using constraint layouts that adjust automatically
Creating resolution-independent assets
Designing UI elements that scale proportionally
Testing your layouts on multiple screen sizes
Instead of creating fixed-position elements, design your game UI to respond to the available screen real estate.
2. Optimize Asset Management
Smart asset management is crucial for performance across devices:
Create multiple asset versions for different device capabilities
Implement dynamic resource loading based on device specs
Use texture compression formats supported across devices
Consider implementing level-of-detail (LOD) systems for complex 3D games
For example, automatically serve higher-resolution textures to high-end devices while using compressed assets for entry-level devices.
3. Use Game Engines That Handle Fragmentation
Modern game engines have built-in tools to manage fragmentation:
Unity offers excellent cross-platform support with adaptive settings
Unreal Engine provides scalable graphics options
Godot has responsive design tools built-in
GameMaker Studio includes device detection features
These engines handle many compatibility issues behind the scenes, letting you focus on gameplay rather than technical hurdles.
4. Implement Graceful Degradation
Design your game to scale features based on device capabilities:
Create a core gameplay experience that works on all supported devices
Add progressive enhancements for higher-end hardware
Implement fallbacks for missing features or capabilities
Allow players to manually adjust performance settings
This approach ensures everyone gets to play your game, even if some experience enhanced visual effects or performance.
5. Establish a Clear Minimum Requirements Policy
Be strategic about which devices you'll support:
Define minimum Android version (e.g., Android 8.0+)
Set baseline hardware requirements
Document supported screen sizes and densities
Choose a cut-off point that balances reach with development effort
Being clear about minimum requirements saves development time and helps manage player expectations.
6. Test, Test, Test
There's no substitute for comprehensive testing:
Use Firebase Test Lab to test on real devices virtually
Set up a physical device testing lab with representative devices
Leverage beta testing programs to expand your testing pool
Monitor analytics after launch to identify problematic devices
Focus testing on popular devices first, then expand to edge cases based on your target audience.
Advanced Techniques
Use Cloud Testing Services
Take advantage of device testing farms that give you access to hundreds of real devices:
AWS Device Farm
Firebase Test Lab
BrowserStack
Samsung Remote Test Lab
These services let you see how your game performs on devices you don't physically own.
Implement Adaptive UI Systems
Many game engines offer UI systems that automatically adjust to different screen sizes and aspect ratios:
Use anchoring and pivot points to position UI elements
Implement safe zones for critical interface elements
Create flexible layouts that adapt to portrait and landscape orientations
Design scalable UI components that work across screen densities
Leverage Analytics for Device-Specific Issues
Use analytics platforms to identify problem devices after launch:
Track metrics like frame rate, crash rates, and completion rates by device model
Set up custom events to monitor device-specific features
Create dashboards that highlight problematic device categories
Use this data to prioritize fixes and optimizations
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Designing for a single reference device - Always test on multiple device profiles
Using absolute positioning - Rely on relative positioning and scaling instead
Ignoring manufacturer customizations - Some UI or hardware features vary by manufacturer
Overemphasizing high-end features - Focus on core gameplay first, enhancements second
Neglecting older but popular devices - Check market share before dropping support
Tips from Professional Mobile Game Developers
"We found that categorizing devices into three tiers—low, medium, and high—simplified our approach to fragmentation. Each tier gets appropriate assets and features, making testing and optimization much more manageable." — Mobile Game Lead Developer
"Don't underestimate the power of letting users customize their experience. Adding simple graphics quality settings can solve many fragmentation issues by letting players optimize for their specific device." — Indie Game Studio Founder
Conclusion
While Android fragmentation presents challenges for mobile game development, it also represents opportunity the chance to reach billions of diverse users. By implementing responsive design, smart asset management, proper testing procedures, and leveraging modern game engines, you can create games that perform well across the ecosystem.
Remember that fragmentation is a moving target as new devices and Android versions constantly emerge. Build adaptability into your development workflow, and you'll be well-positioned to create successful Android games that delight players on any device they choose.
What fragmentation challenges are you facing in your mobile game development journey? Share your experiences in the comments below!

I was also maybe a little low on patience after the fun I've been having the past day or so with my last phone that already had the sketchy USB port and (unsurprisingly) declining battery life. It is an S20 from 2020, and I did already get this replacement. (Thus even less urgency with doing anything about that thrashed screen protector which looks even worse in this lighting...)
It fell screen side down in the floor and hit the base of some metal shelving just wrong. So, now it's doing this shit. 🙃 Started out with a single green line like it gets when I plug it in here, and the very top of the screen very erratically responding to touch input. The screen also won't turn on unless it's put on charge, then it's grudgingly willing to wake up.
That progressed to what you're seeing here, over the past day or so. The screen was actually behaving remarkably well here, but it goes crazier the longer it's on. Usually now the notifications bar can only be pulled down at all from a homescreen that's empty at the top, and the top centimeter or so rarely responds. It's now also registering random phantom touches and swipes while I am actively trying to use it.
So yeah, I am avoiding touching the thing any more than has been necessary to try to get some of the important final shit migrated over. And I'm really hoping the poor thing will stay somewhat functional until after Mr. C gets back in another week or so.
This has primarily been a backup phone that I've been carrying around to continue running Diabox, and the Samsung watch that I mostly even got for the handy CGM display on my wrist. Still no luck getting Diabox reading the sensor right on the Pixel, trying again--and the devs couldn't figure out the issue either after I got the new phone and tried to get it working the first go around. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Same error this time.
But, whatevs. I did get xDrip+ up and running, which is at least as good other than not being able to directly carry my old Diabox data over.
Tumblr media
No luck yet getting the watch to connect to this phone properly either, though I did find one more thing to check--and, due to the person I am, I haven't sought advice on the GrapheneOS forum yet. Where other people do seem to have managed OK. But yeah, while I'll be pissed if my smartwatch is effectively a paperweight now? I'll cope if that is the way things play out.
What really has me worried atm, though? My hard-won BankID is still set up on the S20. And you need it here for everything from online purchases, to logging into anything official like the health portal or the weirdest assortment of commercial sites. I'm not thrilled about the whole setup from a privacy perspective (a number of things in this country, tbqh), but it is what it is. It was difficult or impossible to get SO MUCH done before I finally got set up with BankID access, and I don't want to go back there. Even temporarily.
Being a filthy foreigner with a limited bank account, I also can't just transfer it to a new device online like pretty much everyone else. That would require online banking access. (Which I really don't need to get started on now. A whole rant of its own.) Nope, I need to get the Household Swede's assistance to set up a physical appointment at the bank, so they can do it. You can't just rock up, you do need to make an appointment during the roughly 3 hours a day that they're open and deigning to deal with customers. Banks here would really rather you do handle everything online.
And I can't set that up or really physically get there without some help, frustrating as it is on so many levels.
But, that's why the hope that Borked Phone holds out at least until after he gets back from that trip. I don't know if SEB will need to even see the existing app, though one would really hope not in case of lost/stolen or comprehensively busted devices. But, who knows. My main concern on a practical level is maybe getting stuck for weeks without a functioning BankID, while trying to at least minimally function as an adult. With no onsite backup for another week and a bit.

FUTURE ULTIMATE PHONE PEOPLE THINK
Google pixel 9pro
The Google Pixel 9 Pro is the new kid on the block in this year's lineup. The Pixel 8 Pro was succeeded by the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and the 9 Pro is a new addition to the portfolio - it is a compact, full-featured flagship with all of the bells and whistles of its bigger XL sibling
A compact Pixel is not a new concept in itself, of course, but this is the first time Google is bringing the entirety of its A-game to this form factor. The Pixel 9 Pro packs a 48MP, 5x optical periscope telephoto camera - the same as the Pixel 9 Pro XL. There is also UWB onboard the Pixel 9 Pro. Frankly, it's kind of amazing that Google managed to fit so much extra hardware inside what is essentially the same footprint as the non-Pro Pixel 9.
Google Pixel 9 Pro specs at a glance: Body: 152.8x72.0x8.5mm, 199g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), glass back (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), aluminum frame; IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 min).  Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Review
Tumblr media
Introduction
In recent years, Samsung has launched some pretty cool smartphones with foldable features, powerful batteries, and amazing cameras. The company is currently at peak innovation with the new and creative updates of smart devices. This year, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 was launched in July. The company did great work with materialising the smartphone with unique features, a foldable screen, dual camera, sensors, and accessibilities. Along with the usual upgrades like a newer processor, powerful battery, and embedded memory, Samsung has focused on improving the looks and feel of the smartphone. They have used new mechanisms that have helped bring down the weight and thickness of the phone. From bulky big smartphones to sleek and compact designs, the company is surely focused on making the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 a turnover. However, if you currently have a Galaxy Z Fold 4, you can easily cut on this generation and wait for the next model.
In this blog post, we are going to highlight the features of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and compare it with other brand phones of the same range.
For more comparisons, reviews, blogs, and articles, you can also visit BookMyBlogs.com which is an online journal and informational website run by professional entrepreneurs and writers.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 price
The starting price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 starts at the same expense as the previous generation’s model. At Rs. 1,54,999, you can purchase the  256GB model with 12GB of RAM. The company has launched the phone with two more variants with equal RAM but more storage. The 512GB variant costs around Rs. 1,64,999, while the 1TB variant is priced at Rs. 1,84,999.
However, the Fold series cannot expand the storage so you will have to pay for buying variants with more ROM. For most users, the base variant should provide enough storage and is available in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream.
The phone does not come with the supreme Samsung's S Pen. The users will have to purchase the pen separately. You can also buy accessories for the phone such as covers, mobile grips, holders, and more.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 design
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 comes with a sleek design and attractive appearance. Though you cannot easily distinguish it from its predecessor, upon looking closely, you will find slight modifications such as the placement of the LED flash, colours, folding notch, camera looks and more.
The phone is one of the best horizontally built folding phones with shatter-resistant glass on the front and the best quality aluminium frame on the back. The upgraded hinge also allows the two halves of the phone to sit nearly adjacent to each other when folded. The gap has also been remarkably reduced with an IPX8-rated body for water resistance.
Both the screens on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are very similar to the Fold 4 with minor exceptions such as the brightness of the folding display, which is upgraded to 1,750 nits from 1,200 nits in the previous generation of the phone. However, the screen dimensions are similar to the previous generation which includes a 6.2-inch HD+ AMOLED outer display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the size of the screen is the same as the Fold 4 generation i.e. 7.6-inches QXGA+ display with 120Hz refresh rate.
Display Reviews
Both displays of the phones have good flexibility and under direct sunlight produce vibrant and catchy colours. The outer display can be effectively used for simple tasks while the big screen can be used for office work, reading, multi-tasking, and much more. Users can use multiple apps at once for gaming, watching videos, listening to music, reading, working, etc. However, the crease is still there and can be easily spotted from different angles.
Accessories in the Box
With Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, you don't get many accessories. The phone comes with a box containing a SIM eject tool, a USB Type-C cable, and some user guidelines. Considering the price of the phone, the user expects brilliant accessories such as a S Pen for higher performance and style.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 software
Similar to the S23 series, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 uses a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It's a strong and power-efficient processor that delivers a smooth experience and performance. The software of the phone functions on One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13. Various software features from the Fold 4 are included in the Fold 5 generation, such as Flex mode and multi-app usage. However, there are some new functions such as showing recently closed applications in the taskbar. The users can enable this function from the settings manually and customise their mobile phone based on their preferences.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Battery
The battery capacity of the phone is similar to that of last year which is marked at 4400 mAh. The phone can be charged using a 25W wired charger or a 15W wireless charger. It supports fast charging and once powered can last a whole day of multi-tasking. However, the prevent battery drain, it is important to take care of your battery and retain its life for long-term use.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 cameras
In the phone, there are no noticeable changes from the previous generation phone. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 contains a camera panel of three rear lenses including a 50-megapixel wide, 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 10-megapixel telephoto with 3X optic zoom.
On the front screen, there is a 10-megapixel selfie camera installed and a 4-megapixel lens under-display camera. These can be used for selfie photos, video calls, visual meetings and more.
Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a remarkable update to the previous generation models. However, it has little to no similarities to last year's version Fold 4 model. Except for a few minor changes the phone is almost similar with the same functions, processors, cameras, and more. In this blog post, we have highlighted the features and functions of the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.
