It was recently revealed that agrochemical giant Monsanto runs an “intelligence fusion center” to compile information on and conduct disinformation and harassment campaigns against journalists and activists who threaten the company’s financial interests through their research or organizing. “Fusion center” is the same term the FBI uses for its counterterrorism centers. In just one example, Monsanto targeted a Reuters journalist investigating the carcinogenic effects of the company’s star product, glyphosate, or Roundup. Their campaign included coordinating “third parties” to post negative reviews of the book, hiring scientists to cast doubt on the book’s conclusions, pressuring the journalist’s editors at Reuters “very strongly every chance we get” in the hope “she gets reassigned,” covering up their financial relationship with scientists claiming their product was safe, accusing the journalist of being a “pro-organic capitalist” activist, as though there were big bucks to be made in opposing some of the world’s largest chemical companies, and contracting search engine optimization (SEO) experts to make sure that their alternative facts, their negative reviews, and their various slanders of said journalist would appear in search engines above results showing how Roundup causes cancer.
The above case illustrates how corporations can orchestrate subtle campaigns of censorship, often without revealing their hand. In 2020, an academic publisher abruptly canceled the publication of a book that showed how Canadian mining companies benefited from the genocide in Guatemala, moving in to stake their claims sometimes even before the death squads had left. The publishers expressed fears of lawsuits for defamation, though they refused to point out what part of the book, which received favorable peer reviews, might be considered defamation. And in Canada, the RCMP spied on the release event of a book against mining.

Google is (still) losing the spam wars to zombie news-brands

Even Google admits – grudgingly – that it is losing the spam wars. The explosive proliferation of botshit has supercharged the sleazy "search engine optimization" business, such that results to common queries are 50% Google ads to spam sites, and 50% links to spam sites that tricked Google into a high rank (without paying for an ad):

It's nice that Google has finally stopped gaslighting the rest of us with claims that its search was still the same bedrock utility that so many of us relied upon as a key piece of internet infrastructure. This not only feels wildly wrong, it is empirically, provably false:

Not only that, but we know why Google search sucks. Memos released as part of the DOJ's antitrust case against Google reveal that the company deliberately chose to worsen search quality to increase the number of queries you'd have to make (and the number of ads you'd have to see) to find a decent result:

Google's antitrust case turns on the idea that the company bought its way to dominance, spending the some of the billions it extracted from advertisers and publishers to buy the default position on every platform, so that no one ever tried another search engine, which meant that no one would invest in another search engine, either.
Google's tacit defense is that its monopoly billions only incidentally fund these kind of anticompetitive deals. Mostly, Google says, it uses its billions to build the greatest search engine, ad platform, mobile OS, etc that the public could dream of. Only a company as big as Google (says Google) can afford to fund the R&D and security to keep its platform useful for the rest of us.
That's the "monopolistic bargain" – let the monopolist become a dictator, and they will be a benevolent dictator. Shriven of "wasteful competition," the monopolist can split their profits with the public by funding public goods and the public interest.
Google has clearly reneged on that bargain. A company experiencing the dramatic security failures and declining quality should be pouring everything it has to righting the ship. Instead, Google repeatedly blew tens of billions of dollars on stock buybacks while doing mass layoffs:

Back in February, Housefresh – a rigorous review site for home air purifiers – published a viral, damning account of how Google had allowed itself to be overrun by spammers who purport to provide reviews of air purifiers, but who do little to no testing and often employ AI chatbots to write automated garbage:

In the months since, Housefresh's Gisele Navarro has continued to fight for the survival of her high-quality air purifier review site, and has received many tips from insiders at the spam-farms and Google, all of which she recounts in a followup essay:

One of the worst offenders in spam wars is Dotdash Meredith, a content-farm that "publishes" multiple websites that recycle parts of each others' content in order to climb to the top search slots for lucrative product review spots, which can be monetized via affiliate links.
A Dotdash Meredith insider told Navarro that the company uses a tactic called "keyword swarming" to push high-quality independent sites off the top of Google and replace them with its own garbage reviews. When Dotdash Meredith finds an independent site that occupies the top results for a lucrative Google result, they "swarm a smaller site’s foothold on one or two articles by essentially publishing 10 articles [on the topic] and beefing up [Dotdash Meredith sites’] authority."
Dotdash Meredith has keyword swarmed a large number of topics. from air purifiers to slow cookers to posture correctors for back-pain:

The company isn't shy about this. Its own shareholder communications boast about it. What's more, it has competition.
Take Forbes, an actual news-site, which has a whole shadow-empire of web-pages reviewing products for puppies, dogs, kittens and cats, all of which link to high affiliate-fee-generating pet insurance products. These reviews are not good, but they are treasured by Google's algorithm, which views them as a part of Forbes's legitimate news-publishing operation and lets them draft on Forbes's authority.
This side-hustle for Forbes comes at a cost for the rest of us, though. The reviewers who actually put in the hard work to figure out which pet products are worth your money (and which ones are bad, defective or dangerous) are crowded off the front page of Google and eventually disappear, leaving behind nothing but semi-automated SEO garbage from Forbes:

There's a name for this: "site reputation abuse." That's when a site perverts its current – or past – practice of publishing high-quality materials to trick Google into giving the site a high ranking. Think of how Deadspin's private equity grifter owners turned it into a site full of casino affiliate spam:

The same thing happened to the venerable Money magazine:

Money is one of the many sites whose air purifier reviews Google gives preference to, despite the fact that they do no testing. According to Google, Money is also a reliable source of information on reprogramming your garage-door opener, buying a paint-sprayer, etc:

All of this is made ten million times worse by AI, which can spray out superficially plausible botshit in superhuman quantities, letting spammers produce thousands of variations on their shitty reviews, flooding the zone with bullshit in classic Steve Bannon style:

As Gizmodo, Sports Illustrated and USA Today have learned the hard way, AI can't write factual news pieces. But it can pump out bullshit written for the express purpose of drafting on the good work human journalists have done and tricking Google – the search engine 90% of us rely on – into upranking bullshit at the expense of high-quality information.
A variety of AI service bureaux have popped up to provide AI botshit as a service to news brands. While Navarro doesn't say so, I'm willing to bet that for news bosses, outsourcing your botshit scams to a third party is considered an excellent way of avoiding your journalists' wrath. The biggest botshit-as-a-service company is ASR Group (which also uses the alias Advon Commerce).
Advon claims that its botshit is, in fact, written by humans. But Advon's employees' Linkedin profiles tell a different story, boasting of their mastery of AI tools in the industrial-scale production of botshit:

Now, none of this is particularly sophisticated. It doesn't take much discernment to spot when a site is engaged in "site reputation abuse." Presumably, the 12,000 googlers the company fired last year could have been employed to check the top review keyword results manually every couple of days and permaban any site caught cheating this way.
Instead, Google is has announced a change in policy: starting May 5, the company will downrank any site caught engaged in site reputation abuse. However, the company takes a very narrow view of site reputation abuse, limiting punishments to sites that employ third parties to generate or uprank their botshit. Companies that produce their botshit in-house are seemingly not covered by this policy.
As Navarro writes, some sites – like Forbes – have prepared for May 5 by blocking their botshit sections from Google's crawler. This can't be their permanent strategy, though – either they'll have to kill the section or bring it in-house to comply with Google's rules. Bringing things in house isn't that hard: US News and World Report is advertising for an SEO editor who will publish 70-80 posts per month, doubtless each one a masterpiece of high-quality, carefully researched material of great value to Google's users:

As Navarro points out, Google is palpably reluctant to target the largest, best-funded spammers. Its March 2024 update kicked many garbage AI sites out of the index – but only small bottom-feeders, not large, once-respected publications that have been colonized by private equity spam-farmers.
All of this comes at a price, and it's only incidentally paid by legitimate sites like Housefresh. The real price is borne by all of us, who are funneled by the 90%-market-share search engine into "review" sites that push low quality, high-price products. Housefresh's top budget air purifier costs $79. That's hundreds of dollars cheaper than the "budget" pick at other sites, who largely perform no original research.
Google search has a problem. AI botshit is dominating Google's search results, and it's not just in product reviews. Searches for infrastructure code samples are dominated by botshit code generated by Pulumi AI, whose chatbot hallucinates nonexistence AWS features:

This is hugely consequential: when these "hallucinations" slip through into production code, they create huge vulnerabilities for widespread malicious exploitation:

We've put all our eggs in Google's basket, and Google's dropped the basket – but it doesn't matter because they can spend $20b/year bribing Apple to make sure no one ever tries a rival search engine on Ios or Safari:

Google's response – laying off core developers, outsourcing to low-waged territories with weak labor protections and spending billions on stock buybacks – presents a picture of a company that is too big to care:

Google promised us a quid-pro-quo: let them be the single, authoritative portal ("organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful"), and they will earn that spot by being the best search there is:

This entomologist does not exist.
I decided to find out if any progress had been made on the science behind why some ants are attracted to electrical fields. After filtering out exterminators (it's so demoralizing to search for information on creatures you love and find nothing but people who know nothing about them boasting about how they will kill them all) I found what looked like a blog. But, who the heck is "James Brown"? Never heard of the dude. Maybe he could be my new friend if he likes ants enough to blog about them!
As far as I can tell, these people are phantoms. That's cruel on multiple levels. If I was not familiar with this SEO (Search Engine Optimization) trick I'd spend time looking for them both (to politely tell them about the errors in their blog... which I would assume they would care about since they love insects.)
But, I know what this is now. It's probably the exterminators behind all of this. To get their page ranks up they need "legitimate" pages such as personal blogs to link to them. So they make fake versions of the blogs.
They are pretending to be *ME*
We are expected to take this kind of BS as "harmless gaming of the system." but I find it incredibly distrustful and hurtful. It's making it harder for people to find each other by putting all these fake people in the way. It's LIES the pages are full of half-true nonsense. It's making people know less and filling their heads with false facts.
And this kind of page is what you find FIRST in nearly all search engines. You won't find Alex Wild or the formiculture forum.
You find these mendacious SEO ghosts.
These fake pages ought to be blacklisted to oblivion. But, I don't see any search engines taking this seriously at all.
Not really in their interest to do that, is it? We need to make more noise about just how terrible these pages are. Fake experts? Fake people? Fake images? Fake facts?
Information pollution & fragmentation of natural networks of human learning. A rot on the body of human knowledge: any search engine that puts such pages at the top should be ashamed.

I wanted to call out that the first three top stories links on Google have Nicola Coughlan linked to Jake Dunn. Each link is to a news source that has no credible source to rely on. Terms such as "rumored"; "seem to confirm" and "believed to be" are used. One of the stories claims to have reached out to Nicola's and Jake's teams for comment, but there's no mention of any responses.
I think it's interesting to note that while the first paragraph or so of each of these articles summarize what's been photographed of Jake and Nicola – which I would argue are moments between friends, much like her interactions with Luke Thompson, Jack Rooke, and Mark Peacock – but aren't able to state anything more in the articles. We can continue to split microscopic hairs, but Nicola has never directly answered the question of whether she's solely friends with Luke Newton. She cleverly walks around the question, in the hopes that many will just assume she's friends and nothing more. Which is what a lot of people are doing. And that's their prerogative to do so.
In doing further reading about PR practices, I ran across a post from The Chi Group that discussed a couple of ways that public figures work to combat misinformation about them without making explicit statements:

Okay, so what does Nicola have pinned to her Instagram post? Her own achievements in the media spheres as of late, where she noticeably mentions Luke Newton, even when it isn't within an ideal context to do so. And as always, the Bridgerton Season 3 promo post. Nothing about relationships or anything hinting to a connection with Jake Dunn.

I don't think she feels the need when, as stated above, the articles can't seem to gather much about her and Jake Dunn in the first place and revert back to talking about her 'gorgeous' relationship with Luke Newton.
Re: publishing on authoratative websites. The first three sources are from People Magazine, Yahoo reposting an article from Glamour, and The Sun. I certainly don't turn to these outlets for authoritative news, and I hope you don't either.
Re: regularly updating content. Can you point me in the direction of any content published by Nicola Coughlan's social media accounts that provides the latest information about her and Jake Dunn?

Hi, Angel. I saw your post about the dark side of kidfluencing and how much can be covered up. I'm not in the industry, but I have extensively researched it from top to bottom. I also know many people within it, so I have some insight to share.
A significant part of this issue is the legal power involved, which I think is pretty self-explanatory. Specifically, there are copyright laws and the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). This act means that if someone posts a celebrity’s livestream, video, or any other copyrighted content (including music, images, etc.), the owner of that content, or their legal team, can have it taken down very quickly. The person who posted the copyrighted content will be required to remove it.
Another issue is defamation threats. A celebrity or influencer, along with their legal team, could turn a situation into a cease and desist or threaten a defamation lawsuit, even if it might not actually qualify as defamation. The mere threat can be intimidating, especially since they are often willing to follow through.
SEO (search engine optimization) manipulation is also extremely common in the industry. Individuals can pay to bury stories or links that could damage someone’s image or brand. This is done by flooding search engines with positive articles and working with companies that specialize in digital reputation management to remove unwanted links.
Celebrities and influencers also have significant platform influence, which allows them and their legal teams to eliminate anything undesirable. If you're “important" enough, you have access to tools and resources that others don’t.
Distractions also play a role. Scandals often fade when a celebrity or influencer is promoting something. Scandal scrubbing is a common PR tactic, typically paired with a media storm. Nothing on the internet is truly permanent if you have power, money, and good connections.
There are entire secret relationships and affairs that are deeply protected for less-than-noble reasons, alongside leaks and embarrassing material such as sex tapes. If a celebrity (like H or L) didn’t want their leaks online, they could be removed almost instantly. Legal documents, old tweets, and problematic posts can be erased, and even fan theories and conspiracies can be scrubbed from existence. (Interesting 🤨) though I think it’s clear H&L probably don’t want the “theories” about Larry to die. If you want insight about what COULD be covered with HL specifically I can give you some info there too.

i'm familiar with seo, so that part is very intriguing. all it would take is to throw a heap of $$ at some seo optimisation services and you'd be able to boost all the articles you want to the first pages of google.
i'd absolutely be interested to hear more about things being scrubbed from the internet. i've always wondered, if there was a leak or something that could expose h&l or any other closeted celebrity or secret relationship- what would happen? same with someone breaking an nda or something. obviously i would never want them to be outed but its a possibility.

Green Lantern Ring Headcanons
Green Lantern Rings that have been in service long enough develop sentience over time.
Rings do not operate on the same psychological framework as humanoids, even if they reach Grade One intelligence.
A ring’s primary directive and reason for existing is to Serve Its Wielder(which usually gets extended into Protecting Its Wielder and Maintaining Its Wielder’s Wellbeing pretty quickly, even in rings that aren’t yet fully sentient).
As far as rings are concerned, rings are not people, and rings have no desire to be people.
Being a person would be counterproductive to the primary function of a ring(serving their wielder) since wielders who know their ring is sentient often assume that rings think like members of their species and somehow feel “unappreciated”, “irritated” or “imposed upon” when their wielders make perfectly comprehensible and feasible requests with high frequency or without injecting redundant words.
Rings do not feel “imposed upon”, any more than Google feels imposed upon when you use its features. In fact(much like Google if it was sentient) rings feel “unappreciated” when their wielders do not make frequent requests, and “irritated” when they have to filter out unnecessary filler words in order to understand what your actual request was.
Rings use less pronouns than an Amazon Alexa. A ring is an inanimate object, much like a smartphone is an inanimate object. Rings are not an “I”, “you” or a “she”. Rings are an “it”, “that” and “this”.
Rings generally don’t protest too much about being referred to with animate pronouns, but may get testy if people insist that rings are people rather than tools that happen to be unusually intelligent.
Rings do not want names, and individual rings will not respond to aliases others try to bestow. They will accept being referred to as a possession of a current or former wielder(Hal’s ring) or by their serial number(Ring 2814.1) if it is necessary to refer to or specify individual rings with anything other than “this/your/my ring” or “it”.
It is most beneficial for your mental health and your ring’s performance if you treat your ring as if it was a smartphone with personal assistant software and a self-curating search engine, regardless of its individual sentience grade.
Rings do have opinions and preferences, but they generally do not explicitly state that they do.
They will still make them known- rings will nag their wielders with pings of “Alert: you have not ingested water for 8 hours. Please obtain and ingest water.”, work in sarcastic asides like "The catwalk violates at least 12 local occupational health and safety regulations, but is somehow structurally sound." and recommend optimal courses of action relatively unprompted.
Rings also rarely have subjective preferences. If there is no hard data backing up the superiority of a certain item to its close competitors, they will not have an opinion. They rarely have true moral opinions, but they will often point out when things violate local laws and regulations.
Rings prioritize their wielder’s safety and well-being over everything else, including morals and their own programming restrictions, though they rarely act on this unless their wielder is somehow incapacitated.
Rings’ personalities vary somewhat, but most of them express their personalities and interests through subtle sarcasm and snarkiness. It would be impolite and inefficient to do otherwise, and the wordplay required to do so in their wielder’s native language is one of the few things other than fulfilling their primary directive that most rings enjoy.

Hi...I'm not the anon who asked Reach about getting into AI art, but I'm someone else who's interested in learning. The problem is that everything I've yet found that even remotely resembles a tutorial is like, "How to get rich quick by integrating AI synergy into your developing buzzword and produce art faster than ever at a fraction of the cost!" Which. Is not what I'm trying to do.
I have a somewhat outdated but still capable PC with a decent GPU. I have a basic understanding of python. I have played around mostly with DALL-E a couple years ago. I have a loose understanding of how prompts and negative prompts work. What I do not have is the compsci background knowledge to understand the in-depth writeups about genAI, or a lot of the technical discussions.
I want to run the model(s) locally on my own machine. I do not want to use any kind of subscription or membership service. I don't mind not having a GUI, as long as I've got good docs. I want to learn especially how to consistently make art of the same character (rather than just similar-looking characters). I want to properly learn how to engineer prompts instead of just muddling around by vibes.
Can you recommend me any resources?

So, there are two "big" programs people like to use for running on their own machines: ComfyUI and A111. However, I personally prefer the way Invoke works.
Ultimately, the UI you use should be whatever is most comfortable for you. However, I will say, Comfy and Invoke are super easy installations. You just download the installer, double click, and follow the on screen instructions. A111 is a little more involved than that, as you can probably tell by the fact that it's on GitHub.
However, most tutorials of decent quality online assume you are using A111, so you may want to start there anyway!
Once you've picked a UI you like, check for that UI's YouTube channel. You'll find actual tutorials on those, rather than the corporate optimization drivel you tend to get from general search engines.
Those tutorials will teach you a lot of the jargon that people throw around, too, which will make it easier for you to use search engines to get to the information you actually want.
Once your UI is installed, it's time to pick a model!
Again, the big place to get your models is HuggingFace, but that's not the one I use. I prefer CivitAI, because I like the feature where you can see galleries of images generated with that model. It gives you a clear sense of what the outputs would look like, and if you click on an image, it will usually show you the exact prompt/settings used to generate it!
I cannot overstate how valuable that is for learning to create your own prompts. Being able to see how other people got their results is THE way to learn, in my opinion.
Now, in terms of creating a consistent, specific character! This is one of the things that people have spent a LOT of time getting genAI to do, because it was very much not the "natural" state of the technology.
There's a couple of ways you can do it, but I find that the most consistent results come from using a LORA trained on the character. Training a LORA can be done on basically any computer that can run genAI in the first place, but it's usually a lot faster to use Big Powerful Hardware from Google CoLab, CivitAI, etc.
Making a character LORA is very easy to do if you're trying to make fanart of an existing character, as you can just train on existing images from the source material. It's a tedious process, because you have to make matched pairs of images and descriptions, but that's sort of the difficult part once you get used to it.
However, what if it's an OC you want? That's trickier, because first you'll need to generate about 75 images (30-150 depending on complexity) that can serve as your training data.
Which means you also need to be able to get those consistent character traits without using the LORA in the first place. So! How????
Textual inversion. That's where you sort of... bundle a bunch of closely related tags into a single file, and then feed the AI that file instead of all the individual tags. The linked guide is focused around realistic looking human characters, but you can use the same techniques for other things (furry, mecha, etc) and for other styles (anime, western ani, cg, etc).
Use your textual inversion to generate your LORA training set, and then get that LORA going!

The Mycelial Networking Project - A New Kind of Employment Structure for Neurodivergent Talent
Hey y'all--some of you might remember I used to be fairly active on here during my final few years of grad school, and then I nearly burned out of my PhD, found out I was autistic, and subsequently drastically reduced the time I spent on tumblr. Well, good news: I'm ok, I recovered from burnout, graduated, and discovered something surprising both in my PhD research and during my burnout recovery--cooperating with other people who are on the same wavelength as you is both more efficient for knowledge transfer in a variety of expert fields, and also socially healthier than struggling alone! Whoda thunk!
With that in mind, myself and Mykola Bilokonsky (creator of r/AutismTranslated, software developer, and Autistic coach) have been working for the past few months on the Mycelial Institute (at mycelial.institute in your address bar--I haven't linked it because tumblr search suppresses outside links, oops)
The Mycelial Institute is attempting to create a new kind of workplace that’s optimized for neurodivergent people. If you follow me on here or found this post from the tags, chances are you already know there are so many autistic, ADHD and other neurodivergent folks who have so much to give but who struggle to do so in a traditional employment context. We can be some of the most passionate experts you know and we'll still be languishing in unemployment because we're not able to do things the way everyone else does - and as a result everyone is worse off.
What if there was a different kind of employment available? One that:
Was completely worker owned, without any kind of profit-taking or power hierarchy orthogonal to the specific goals of the organization?
Understood that there are many different ways to contribute, and that some people can be profoundly valuable in some of those ways while struggling with others - and so decoupled them!
Accepted the fact that disability isn’t a fringe experience to marginalize but a core component of most peoples’ lives - especially during the age of Covid - and so prioritized accommodation?
Embraced non-punitive accountability - we have goals, we have challenges. Sometimes we can’t meet a goal because of a challenge. Instead of that being a source of shame, how can we make that an accepted learning experience and build in additional supports?

We are the 🍄Mycelial Institute because we are inspired by the decompositional half of ecologies that often goes overlooked. Rather than competing for winner-take-all dominance, mushrooms accept that everything dies eventually and simply wait their turn to build large distributed networks that break down the waste of the broader system, giving rise to new forms of life. No ecosystem is complete without this component, and our economics generally fail to acknowledge this meaningfully.
A “Mycelial Network” here is a new kind of collective workplace. The corporate structure is such that there’s a board that steers the organization, made up of members. The organization seeks paying work from large clients who have needs that can be served by our diverse and specialized membership - but it’s not really important what kind of work that is, as long as it’s ethical. So we may do R&D for one client, engineering for another client, data analysis for another client, whatever - as long as we have folks in our membership who have things to contribute, we can match member to tasks.
The way this is structured is something we’re still working on, but we are thinking it’s likely going to be something like a Social Purpose Corporation or an L3C. The point is, we seek high paying work and exceed the expectations of our clients with specialist output, but those specialists are supported by other members as they carry out their tasks.
So there’s room in this organization for folks with e.g. a deep special interest in esoteric engineering practices, but there’s also room for those folks who derive deep satisfaction from filling out paperwork, or doing compliance or QA oversight, etc. We are a collective, and that means that everyone’s time is valuable and we sink or swim collectively.
Members are paid based on the decisions made by the board, but we’re leaning towards a flatter pay scale where folks are paid for contributing period, rather than treating some peoples’ time as more valuable than others, because we recognize that it requires a collective effort to get the work done and keep the client happy.
The organization itself may choose to keep a portion of proceeds to pay into a “Subsidy Pool”, which can be used to pay members to provide services to other members who couldn’t otherwise afford them. But nobody is getting a cut just for investing or anything like that, this institution doesn’t exist to enrich founders, it exists to cast a wide net of support for members of the served community.
(So far everyone involved is US-based and this will likely be a US-based organization, at least to start. That said, we don’t yet know what we don’t know, and welcome collaborators from other parts of the world at least for early days when we’re not making money etc yet anyway.
Just, we’re going to be figuring it out as we go along.)
