1. How I feel about this character

He is my number one boy. 𝖎 𝖜𝖎𝖑𝖑 𝖕𝖗𝖔𝖙𝖊𝖈𝖙 𝖍𝖎𝖒

You know what? I think he could have something deeply Freudian going on with Harold Tassiter. Why the hell not.

4. My unpopular opinion about this character

Handsome Jack is queer-coded. The following experts are taken from “Gender Transgression and Villainy in Animated Film” by Meredith Li-Vollmer & Mark E. LaPointe (NOTE ON THE SOURCE: games and animation are separate art forms, but certain tropes in character design are prevalent in both mediums. Therefore, I find this article relevant to the discussion)

The article points out such psychical characteristics of a queer villain:

“The finer bone structure in the facial features of villains [...] a narrow jaw line and high, prominent cheekbones—contrasts with the strong chins of the masculine heroes” 

Jack’s jaw is noticeably more narrow than that of Roland’s. His cheekbones were "Forcibly removed from Eden-6's most famous actor and jammed into his jawline." (Reddit AMA) 

“Villains’ feminine facial features are further emphasized through color and shading that give them the appearance of wearing cosmetics [...] their eyebrows appear plucked and arched.” 

His mask, lighter than his actual skin tone, simulates make-up. It can be easily compared to the powdered complexion of Moxxi. His eyebrows are well groomed. Other masculine characters in Bl2 (e.g., Axton, Salvador) have noticeably more “bushy” eyebrows.

"Villains also have more feminine hairstyles."

Jack’s iconic hairdo is, once again, more similar in style to Moxxi’s than to those of masculine heroes. Roland, Brick, and Axton all keep their hair short.

“The physiques of animated villains also connote feminine forms. For example [...] a voluminous chest but a much narrower waist and hips that together create a silhouette resembling a corseted woman.” 

Just look at him.

“Whereas male protagonists exhibit high levels of physical activity and exertion in performing their many heroic deeds, villains have much lower levels of activity. Unlike their heroic counterparts, villains have henchmen do the manual labor.” 

He does not fight his own battles. He also can’t match Vault Hunters physically, and that’s why he has to resort to trickery to gain the upper hand.

I will make a separate post elaborating on this, but for now I just wanted it out of my system.

tales really made shade just seem like some dude but he actually has a good backstory and explanation for his behavior because he's originally from bl2 dlc where all of the people close to him die due to dehydration and him living in denial and pretending the corpses are his very much still alive friends and then he finds out there was an underground fountain under the town all the time and you can hear from his voice how he breaks and that really hits hard. friends are very important to him.

What's your opinion on Shade?

Shade is... one of the most interesting characters, to me.

Originally part of Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty DLC, he's a necrophile living in the town of Oasis who selectively believes the corpses he surrounds himself with are alive--he rigs the bodies with speaker systems, gives them names, voices, decides their personalities; although, it's a question whether he has killed these people or simply stuck them up on poles instead of respecting the bodies left from bandits. I personally think the latter, he has never outright shown violent behavior.

It's a unique psychological development to see in the Borderlands universe, but definitely not so out-of-place given the existence of some other characters like Krieg, and even Handsome Jack himself who has his own unofficially-documented disorders.

Tales From The Borderlands puts him in a particular light (dare I say shades him,) giving you the opportunity to respond to him in your own way through Rhys and Fiona.

Do you yell at him for his behavior? Do you slap him for the scare? Are you patient with him? Do you accept his form of friendship or (determinantly) leave him to die by August's bullet?

Personally, I think he was a very unique addition to TFTBL as a plot-point character; I think he added a lot to the atmosphere, set up the game for anyone, even if they had no clue what the Borderlands universe entailed, by stringing up the bodies of past bosses from the games in classic dark comedy fashion.

All-in-all, ever since TFTBL I think he's become a rather essential character for the Borderlands series, at least in terms of representing the lengths it will go to convey its morose sense of humor.
