TGR CHAPTER 13 THOUGHTS

***also i forgot to add to the last posts but goes without saying THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS

- i have a full day at uni today so i won’t get to read much :/ gonna do my best tho

- the trojans having to lock down the campus and hire extra security to deal with reporters and busybodies oh boy u guys are practically foxes now!!

- random thought but i want everyone to know that pretty much everything i have learnt about american states (where they are, their names etc), how american high school/college to professional sports works, and the american college system has been because of reading aftg so thank u nora for that

oh jeremy. this is so much sadder than i expected. i cannot imagine how fucking guilty jere feels about his brothers death

- disregard my earlier excitement about the fall banquet i am now very sad and nervous

- jean saying he will ask jeremy for his past rather than listening to someone else tell him and saying he will protect jeremy at the banquet is soooo neil and andrew coded

- “ He’d gotten Neil through three weeks at the Nest; dragging Jeremy through one banquet would be easy. Having to behave would be the only difficult part.” :((

- “I’m not learning French for anyone but you.” Getting kicked in the chest would be a little less painful. “ BE STILL MY BEATING HEART!!!!!!

- “They get you all the time. You should stay and gossip with us.” again, may i repeat, i fucking love derrick and derek

- “a ridiculous demand when there was nothing to gain from his company this far from a court.” absolutely devastating, someone let me kiss jean on the forehead and tell him he is worth more than just his ability to play

- jean offering to teach jere a phrase in french just so jere can use it if he wants to leave the banquet is so fucking wholesome and sweet

and then

“Jean mercilessly bullied him until he got it right.” ofc he did

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

- YES GOD PLS WATCH THE FOXES GAME IM BEGGING FOR MORE CRUMBS I MISS MY FAMIKY SO MUCH

- THE FOXES WON THEIR FIRST MATCH!!!!!

- rematch between the foxes and ravens is on my dads birthday that’s crazy

- “Jeremy couldn’t make the first move here no matter how desperately he wanted to tug a few more buttons loose.” jean is making jeremy lose his mind i love it

-“Jeremy would be lucky to know his own name when Jean was standing between his legs like this.” SHUT UPPP I CANT DEAL

- “No. Not to you.” LEAVE ME ALONE RN JEREMY WOULD NEVER LIE TO JEAN!!! HE WANTS JEAN TO BE ABLE TO TRUST HIM!!!

- “No. The details cannot matter tonight. You are my captain and my partner; that is all I need to know. I will stand with you against them.” “You and me against the world,” i think nora is actively trying to kill me

- wildcats captain: i’ve heard so much about u jean!

jean: i don’t fucking know u bitch don’t talk to me.

- guys i’m not so happy to confirm i was right about the drugs and that being one of jeremy’s big secrets. scared to find out more

- go fuck urself all the way to hell connors u piece of absolute dog shit

- jean defending the trojans is so neil and kevin coded

- torres our knight in shining armour we love and appreciate u!

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

- “Let me fight him. I will make sure he never plays again.” When Jeremy only shook his head, Jean promised, “I will do it with no witnesses.”

- ok jean holding jeremy by his chin and making him look at jean is mirroring andrew’s neck hold for neil - they are grounding, a reminder that the other is there and a desire to be let in

- “Derek and Derrick brought over a gaggle of friends they’d made over the years, excited to show off their infamous teammate, and Jeremy heard Tanner hyping him up at one of the freshmen’s meet-and-greets.”

GODDDDD i actually can’t describe how happy this makes me like it’s exactly what jean deserves, for people to want to be friends with him to enjoy his company and be silly and playful with him

- “acouple players who’d studied French in high school or were currently taking it sneaked over to practice with Jean, and Jean gave them his undivided attention.” FUCKING ADORABLE

- Lmaooooo jean not wanting to speak to a signal person for a week post banquet is sooo me after extensive socialisation. i become a hermit

- fuck this faser guy, jere u deserve better

- “it all seemed so childish and self-centered compared to Jean’s more brutal tragedies.”

once again, please don’t compare your family/home life issues and trauma to others. u have endured enough without torturing yourself into thinking u don’t deserve to be upset about your problems and the way u were treated because u think that your experiences are not as bad as someone else’s. do not invalidate urself or ur feelings

- jesus fucking christ this is so fucking depressing. oh jere my heart goes out to u. the whole party and noah situation is such a tangled mess and at the heart of it all is jeremy’s guilt

- well that was a rollercoaster chapter

ok im finished with the golden raven (meaning i completed the first read through, ill never be finished with these books) and here are some thoughts:

Jeremy and Jean recognizing harmful the same/similar behaviour in the other but not in themself WHY IS IT ME?! Jean in literally like 'Jeremy your family is shit why are you staying' without a second of reflection makes me want to cry

Jeremy Alan

there is a moment where "[Jean] dug the teeth of his key into his thumb" FOREVER PARTNERS MY HEART!

Jean trying to hush the commentator on tv he is so precious

"he deserves peace. thats why hes here" - "thats not enough" - "it is more than he has ever gotten" IM NOT CRYING YOU ARE CRYING AND ALSO HE DESERVES THE WHOLE WORLD

Jean telling Andrew "I wouldnt have given him (Neil) to you if id known you would just throw him away so carelessly" (regarding Andrew not quitting smoking to save Neil faster in need)

Kevin finally drinking vodka from a glass and not a bottle, but also Jean being strongly again him drinking (so much) at all, finally someone adressing this very harmful behaviour and tryinng to do womething abou it, alcoholism is no joke, and also later telling him to stop night practices because he learned the acerage raven career is 5 years he cares so much

Jean being a fan of emotional procrastination, hard same

Derek and Derrick and Shawn and Shane, its giving same hat, also Derek and Derrik have massiv Ransom and Holster vibes, i love them

i dont know if this was intentional, but Jean explicitly takes Kevins postcard from Laila with both hands, which is the polite thing to do in Japan

the guillotine drawing at the door which was of course fucked up but also very funny

Jean sometimes counting things to distract himself or pass time is again giving forever partners

there are 29 Trojans and Jean is number 29 (and also i just relized Neil being number 10 of 10 Foxes at the start of the original series) being kind of a flip of Riko having to be number 1, being last but surpassing everyone, i hope you know what i mean im struggling with words

Jeremys "we all knew" big big ouch, that whole situation and family is fucked up

i really loved the sentence "the trojans couldnt change how their opponents played, only how they performed despite the unchecked violence" you can choose to not let your circumstances define who you want to be, love it so much

Choach Rhemann coming out of nowhere to deck Zane, in my head he had a steel chair for it and hes my hero

Coach Rhemann asking Jean what he can do for him and Jean thinking that "in no universe could he ask for more than what hed already gotten" BOY YOU DESERVE THE WORLD! i love that he has so many people looking out for him now

also Jean later actually saying the words "I deserve to get better" SO HUGE! IM CRYING!!!!

also also Jean putting Wymack and Rhemann in the fathers category had my heart hurt at every following yes coach im so happy for him that he slowly is letting these people in

later he hugs Cat to comfort her because that is what she does to comfort him, he learned that from her! hes unsure about it first and than realizes how easy it is, how easy it is for him! him healing means so much to me

Browning saying "ill guess well see, wont we" to Jeans "i have nothing left that is worth this" and Jean also later thinking this would come back to haunt him later IM SO FUCKING NERVOUS I HATE THIS

Aaron being allowed to drive Andrews car, so huge

Jeremy always saying "what would i do without you" to William and him replying "let us not find out" towards the end has me thinking we will definitly find out in the next book

Jeremy "facing his stepfather empty-handed rarley turned out well" do i even want to know what this means? also what a huge piece of shit, im very exited for him getting what he deserves in the next book

also Jeremy immediatly sassing him is also giving neil, with makes me thing about forever partners again and Jeremy hopefully being Jeans new forever partner

everytime Jean calling Lailas place home without even thinking about it and it burning down, how could they do this

"the best entertainment [Jeremy] had to offer was a tangled up yo-yo and a hacky sack" love the return of the yo-yo, very funny but also very sad

why did Andritch terminated the contract of the raven who had a breakdown in class? why only his and no other before or after? am i missing something?

Sergio writting that the incident was the first time he ever saw Jean being afraid of Zane, i dont know what i think of this, but im sure its not good

Jeremys mom calling so often the week they are away is yes super controlling and not good at all, but probably very easy for Jeremy to spin as a caring think, her worrying about him etc. I mean he knows his family is fucked but he also still cares for them and wants to be a part of this family and this made me think about how he probably twists a lot of this harmful stuff to protect himself so he can still see them as a family worth wanting idk man, but it made me think because if someone told me their mom was calling a lot when shes away i would think ok thats a bit much but its probably coming from her caring and worrying

You're right there is no way one book would be enough to wrap it up 😭😭😭

The last chapter really upped the book for me. I was crying!!!! It's been such a delight to see Jean growing and healing and when he said "I deserved to get better" I almost died 🥺🥺🥺🥺

I really enjoy watching his and Jeremy's relationship. I really can't wait for Jeremy to open up about his life. I love how many people care for Jean. That scene when he tells Laila about Elodie!! Oh my god!

I love how genuinely kind Jean is. I'm obsessed with Jeremy wondering how he managed to survive the nest and still remain good. Also obsessed with Jean admiring Jeremy's decision to remain kind despite other team's cruelty. I literally can't get over all their scenes together.

I love Kevin!! Love his and Jeremy's mutual affection. Seeing Neil was fantastic, the context was less fantastic. I need another book about the foxes. And a book about Kevin.

I can't describe how much I love that Jean has hobbies that are gentle, that require taking care of things, and that give a sense of control. And Jean seeing same-sex relationships that are both healthy and long-lasting.

So basically, as you can see, I really love Jean. I love Jeremy, too. I just wish we got to see more of his family and a slightly more complex family dynamic.

I wish we would see more of Laila and Jeremy, cause I felt like Laila only started to stand out to me by the end of the book. I also felt like there were just too many characters. I understand the trojans are a big group, and I think Jean interacting with many people did him wonders. But still, I really didn't care about Cody and Ananaya and Pat and Shane and Shawn and Nabil and whoever. I liked Derek and Derrick, though. Fantastic comedic relief. Plus I think it's good for Jean to interact with just...two gymbros.

How are you feeling about the pacing now lmao? I didn't want to get too much into it when we talked before, but do you see why im worried and hoping for a fourth book !!! I have a whole essay written in my drafts about everything that has to happen in tsc3, and based on nora's writing style, it's going to take her more than 500 pages imo 😭

I want to read your thoughts on the book!! Favorite parts, unexpected scenes, all of it!!

Liam originated as the nickname of Uilliam, the Irish variant of William. William is an English name from German origin brought to Ireland when the British fled England after the conquest of Norman.

The Irish began to use English names, including William, which led to the development of Uilliam and its short form, Liam.

Liam is the top US boy's name for 2018, joining the elite group of names to top the list. Liam started out as a short form of William but has long stood on his own and for several years has become one of the most popular baby names for boys.

Emma:

Initially, a short form of the German name beginning with the ermen element meaning "whole" or "universal". It was introduced to England by Emma of Normandy, who was the wife of King Ethelred II (and by him the mother of Edward the Confession) and later King Canute.

After the Norman conquest, this name became popular in England. It was revived in the 18th century, perhaps in part because of a poem by Henry Prior Henry and Emma (1709). In the United States, it ranked third in 1880 (after Mary and Anna were omnipresent).

It declined steadily over the next century, beginning another rise in the 1980s and eventually becoming the most popular name for girls in 2008.

So dig this action, Jackson. You're the UFC. You've drawn up this card for Madison Square Garden on paper----but all of your main event concepts fall apart. Woodley/Till winner vs Covington? Surgery for the winner of that fight. Holloway? Needs more time to heal up. Cejudo vs Dillashaw? 2019. GSP? On bad terms, sorry. Whittaker is hurt so you've got no 185 lb fight which in turn means you can't roll out him vs Gastelum either. You've loaded up this card with no main event and desperation starts to sneak in. Jones vs Romero for an interim title fight? Romero is hurt and Jones can't make the weight on short notice. You come up with an acceptable-ish main event with Shevchenko vs Eubanks but nobody wants that so you gotta back off of that because fans hate WMMA main events. Eventually somehow you find a way to luck into a really good intriguing HW fight sort of kind of. DC vs Derrick Lewis is probably the best you could do on short notice and at the very least, you get to have your HW champ style on a personable dude who is coming off a massive finish. Then bad gets worse:

-If you had been a betting man, you would've bet Nate Diaz doesn't make it to the dance. Instead it's Dustin Poirier who is hurt but not hurt enough to be back in early 2019. Go figure.

-That's fine, you still got a damn good co-main event! Well...then Luke Rockhold does as he do and now you gotta find a replacement, thankfully you loaded up on those, riiiight? Well see the problem is that by remaking one fight, you have to call on a replacement for the other SO:

It's at this point that I go back to the header; Sean Shelby and Mick Maynard are underpaid. No other profession asks you to deal with this level of chaos in short order. In any other sport, injuries create excuses but these dudes are expected to reshake up cards on a moment's notice and do it with pride and joy. That's really hard. UFC 230 is the weaker of the three cards upcoming but it's not for a lack of effort. Maynard and Shelby handled some bad situations and turned out an acceptable card. Not a GREAT card but an acceptable one.

Too Low- Julio Arce vs Sheymon Moraes

There are two fantastic featherweight fights on this card. The one I didn't choose was Shane Burgos vS Kurt Holobaugh; two strikers of various styles which normally make for a big money action fight. That and I'd like to see how Burgos responds to the challenge of his first loss in a high profile spot. Gimme Moraes vs Arce though; two tremendous strikers with Arce having a bit more versatility to his game. Moraes is an ascending talent at 145 lbs while Arce is on a crazy hot streak right now. That's the fight to make on the main card in my eyes especially if you have plans to do more South American cards.

Too High Up- Karl Roberson vs Jack Marshman

So I like Karl Roberson and I kinda get what the UFC sees in him. They see an ascending talent at a division that's beginning to grow some legs and teeth currently. I get it even if I don't really agree with it given the weaknesses Roberson showed in his pro loss. He vs Marshman on paper is an intriguing battle of strikers since Marshman will throw hands with Roberson who should sign in that sort of a capacity. The UFC might've rushed Roberson vs Cezar Mutante BUT I get what the hope was. They were aiming for something and missed which happens sometimes. Having said that, this being on a main card feels like a waste. Make it your prelim headliner or do whatever you want with it but this fight as a main card fight? Definitely not easing Roberson in after a rough loss.

Twelve Precarious Ponderings

1- Don't overthink this main event. It's going to be fun.

2- Can Cormier avoid chaos? MMA is all about chaos. The short notice dude pulling off the upset, the weight cut snafu, the PED testing alarm. Can Cormier avoid the fact that Derrick Lewis well and truly has a few weapons to beat you with but he seems to use said weapon insanely well? Lewis has won 9 of his last 10 fights and a portion of those were late round stoppages where he SHOULD be falling apart but just kind of finds a way to survive until you dip yourself into a fuck up and get finished. Is Cormier SO good that even he can avoid the chaos?

3- If Daniel Cormier lifts and slams Derrick Lewis, I think we're all going to lose our shit.

4- Chris Weidman and Jacare Souza may be old and broken down but let's be entirely fair at the same time here. Weidman is still a tremendous fighter even as a more beat up version of what he used to be. It was barely over a year ago that he beat Kelvin Gastelum to pretty much save his career and we all know how good KG is. Similarly Jacare gave Gastelum fits at times in their fight and it could be argued that Jacare's more complete now as a fighter than he ever was---unfortunately becoming more complete at a time where he's just naturally eroding due to age. Jacare's only REALLY been soundly ran over once and that was by Robert Whittaker. Chris Weidman, even in his current form, is still really good. This is one of those rare fights where old and broken down is right----but "still really good is also right." What's more, I'm most excited to see the grappling exchanges between these two which could be a gas however long it lasts.

5- Chris Weidman is talking like he's going to get a title shot if he wins. Y'all up for that?

6- Jared Cannonier going down to 185 lbs just SEEMS like a risky proposition. Cannonier could probably continue to exist at 205 lbs as a weirdly solid kinda decent kinda bad LHW who just never gets cut because he can always beat SOMEBODY but the drop to 185 lbs just feels like going from the old and bad division to the old and still pretty good division. Risky.

7- Did ANY fighter see his career turn around at such a dramatic rate the way poor Jason Knight's did? Knight went from being a really exciting up and coming prospect to start 2017 to coming off three losses. Losing to Ricardo Lamas is no shame (but also losing to Lamas if you're a prospect feels like you can't jump over an important hurdle at 145 lbs) but he didn't even show up vs Moggly Benitez. Now part of that is due to how damn solid Moggly Benitez is but everything about Knight seemed off that night. Against Makwan Amirkhani, I thought he performed a lot better but still fought like a dude who is either at war with what he thinks he is as a fighter or out of touch with the skills and abilities he actually has. The fact that Knight fights anybody and is the rare "scrapper with genuine skills" makes him a guy who will stick around as long as he wishes but you get the feeling he vs Jordan Rinaldi is a way to reset Jason Knight's stock a bit.

8- The last time a UFC card had this many lightweights on it? UFC 155 in 2012. Want a gander at how quickly the quality of 185 seemed to jump up? The middleweight fights on THAT card were Tim Boetsch vs Costa Philippou, Alan Belcher vs Yushin Okami and Chris Leben vs Derek Brunson on short notice. Comp that to the what we're getting here and the only fight below the quality of those three combined is the Marshman-Roberson fight. This division HAS improved even if we still poke fun at it.

9- Israel Adesanya vs Robert Whittaker feels like the sort of fight the UFC thinks will sell big in Australia----only to come back and be like "I guess not" in reality.

10- There are three featherweights on this show and we sort of hit up Knight/Rinaldi but the other two ones are the REAL dandies. Shane Burgos was racking up wins all over the place and then he ran into Calvin Kattar. What's interesting is Burgos made a lot of very intriguing key adjustments in that fight to at least give himself a sporting chance vs Kattar. I had it tied up going into the third before a perfect Kattar read and one of the best uppercuts you'll ever see ended the fight for him. Burgos has been gone a LONG time but I'm still hopeful and optimistic on his upside. He gets probably the perfect opponent in Kurt Holobaugh who is a solid all around 145er who Burgos should be able to beat while also getting tested. If he struggles, we'll open our eyes and have to reassess him. On the other hand also on the card is a genuinely stupendous battle between Sheymon Moraes and Julio Arce. It's pretty crazy to think the UFC didn't think Arce was worth a deal right out of the Contender Series but an injury opened the door for Arce to get in and thus far he's been great; bullying Dan Ige and finishing Daniel Teymur in 2018. Moraes was one of WSOF's more enjoyable fighters to watch and after getting steamrolled by Zhabit, he bounced back to take a decision win over Matt Sayles. On the feet, this should be great and this is one of those fights at 145 lbs where it's such a shark tank that even when you want to avoid running two prospects against one another, it just inevitably has to happen. This is IMO talent wise one of the best fights of the night.

11- Cage Corrosion has been a fun study thus far and so I'd like to point out that cage corrosion eligible fighters are 3-7 in their last 10 bouts. After a September where they went 3-1, October brought a six fight losing streak. November starts off with a really good fighter in Chris Weidman but also has some questionable dudes like Jack Marshman and Pezao. Gonna be interesting to see how the picture shakes out there.

12- What is the appropriate buyrate for this one? DC's lowest is vs Gus at around 250K and his highest are obviously the Jones fights (725K and 850K). As a solo act outside of those guys, he's a comfortable-ish mid to high 300K range dude. Does Lewis help him hit that mark again? What's more, is the fact that there's even a SHOW at this point considered a win?
