When Faith Meets Juvenile - Chap 2

This is a Dale Holt x reader story. There's no (y/n) insert. I'm just avoiding the use of the reader's name, and it is female-based. There are hints of physical appearance but nothing in-depth.
This writing contains highly sensitive content like violence, drugs, the use of weapons, abuse, mental illness, hostage situations, talk of suicide, religious abuse, smut, and other mature themes. Reader discretion is advised. MUST BE 18+ TO INTERACT.

As I slammed the door behind me, I expected the house to be empty and everyone to be at church. But there sat my brother in the living room, staring at me. His eyebrows furrowed, and he was tapping his fingers against the armrest. “Where were you?”
“I, uh, there was an accident.” The anxiety that bubbled inside of my chest was the worst I’d ever felt before, “Are Mom and Dad home?”
“What happened?” He pointed at my leg.
“Some guy accidentally ran into me with his bike. It’s fine, though. He was very kind and helped me.” I slowly hobbled down towards the hallway, hoping to get out of this conversation.
“You mean Dale Holt?” My brother’s voice sounded behind me. I turned and gave him a confused look, “I saw him in the truck. Do you even know who he is?”
“Why does it matter?”
“If Dad figured out you were with him, he would lose his shit.”
“Dad won’t figure it out, right?” I know my brother usually sticks up for me with people at school, but when it comes to our parents, he’s the one who gets into trouble. Sometimes, I feel like he would love it if they thought poorly about me.
“I don’t know. I think Dad would love to hear about his perfect daughter coming home in the truck of a juvenile.”
“A juvenile?”
“You know, the kid who robbed the liquor store and beat someone half to death.” What my brother said took me by surprise. There was no way the person who did that was Dale. A guy who would beat someone half to death wouldn’t go out of his way to help me like he did. Is that why he said it was for the best? That I didn’t know him? I turned away from my brother and dragged myself into my bedroom. I plopped into bed and winced at the pain in my leg. How was I going to explain this to my parents? I don’t think James will immediately tell them who I was with, but I know they will have questions. Maybe I should have made him drop me off a few houses down.
I was stirred awake by the soft voice of my mother. It seemed the evening sermon was over, and they were finally back home. The events from earlier had finally caught up with me, making my body sore and my head pound. I couldn’t fully make out what my mom was trying to say to me as I was fighting myself to wake up. Then, from my blurry vision, I could see the figure of my father walking into the room with something in his hand. Suddenly, a jolt of shock shot through my body as my dad threw ice water over me. My body jolted up; all I could do was sit there and stare at my father. For the first time in 17 years, I was witnessing what it was like for your parent to look at you with pure anger. My head hung in shame, and I waited for him to start yelling at me.
“What the hell do you think you were doing!” His voice was sharp.
“I-I-I just wanted to go to the park!” I cried out. Tears started to pour down my cheeks, and I hated myself for how easy it was to cry.
“You’ll never be allowed out on another Sunday again!”
“Daddy, I didn’t-”
“Look at you!” He gestured toward my leg and disheveled appearance. “This happens when you go against your parents and embarrass them!” He slammed his hands down onto my shoulders and pulled me off my bed. “Get her properly dressed!” My father yelled at my mother. My crying turned into wailing. My mom picked out a plain, knee-length, black dress and helped me change into it. My hair was still dripping wet from the water thrown on me. “Shh dear, your crying will only upset him further.” My mother spoke to me. Once I got dressed appropriately, my father dragged me out of the house and shoved me into the passenger seat of the car. “You better get yourself together before I pull up to the hospital. I don’t want anyone seeing you in hysterics like this.”
The drive to the hospital took about 20 minutes, and I was able to calm myself down just enough. My eyes were red and puffy, and the salt from my tears stained my cheeks, but I wasn’t actively bawling anymore. After my dad parked the car, he got out, approached the passenger side, and opened the door for me. He helped me down and walked me to the emergency entrance. When we entered the building, I wasn’t surprised to only see two other people sitting in the waiting room. Two Rock wasn’t a busy place where people were always getting hurt. Off to the side of the entrance were wheelchairs lined up like grocery carts. My dad grabbed one and motioned for me to sit, so I did that. He wheeled me to a window where, behind the glass, an older lady sat.
“How may I help you?” She said, staring at us with blank eyes and a monotone voice.
My dad explained that I had injured myself badly and needed to get my leg looked at. He told the lady my brother and I had gone out and that I fell down a hill, hitting a rock and slicing my leg open. I wasn’t sure how he knew my leg was sliced open, but I guess it couldn’t be hard to guess, especially now that I’m looking at the bandaging. A bit of blood was starting to seep through.
Once my dad gave the pepper-haired lady our information, we sat in the waiting room. A nurse opened the door a few minutes later and called my name. The other two patients groaned as I was called before them, even though they were here first. My father pushed me behind the nurse as we followed her into an exam room. She asked me a few questions about my health and what was happening as she took my basic vitals. She left the room and informed us that the doctor would arrive soon. A knock sounded on the door right before it swung open. A man in his late thirties walked in wearing a long white lab coat and glasses resting on the bridge of his nose. He looked like he was trying hard to be a stereotypical doctor. We reviewed the events of what happened again, and he asked a few of the same questions the nurse had asked.
“Alright, I’m going to undress your wound and look at what’s happening.” The doctor slid a pair of gloves onto his hands and started unwrapping the medical tape. Once all the dressing was off, he threw them into a biohazard bag. He grabbed a new piece of gauze and started dabbing around the cut. “Whoever cleaned and dressed this did a good job.”
“It was her brother.” My father said.
I just sat there quietly, thinking about the brunette-haired boy kneeling before me as he carefully took care of my injury. I wonder what he was up to tonight? Would he tell his family about me and what happened? I doubt he would, but they probably wouldn’t crucify him the way my father did me.
“So you got this injury falling down a hill?” The doctor asks.
“Yeah, I’m a bit clumsy,” I said, feigning stupidity.
“I’m going to clean your cut again, numb the area, and then give you a few stitches.”
I just started at the beige wall while the doctor did his thing. Once he finished, he wrapped my leg up and handed my dad a prescription to help with any pain I might feel. My father pushed me back to the car in the wheelchair and helped me up into the passenger seat. The drive back home was completely silent.

Dales POV
“Dale?” Her sweet voice sounded out.
“Yeah?” My voice came out breathy and quiet.
“I’d like to see you again someday.” The words that she said caught me entirely off guard. I wasn’t expecting her to say that. I stared at her face momentarily before a slight smirk grew on my lips. “I would like that too, Doll.”
I watched her close the truck door and made sure she could make it to the door before I pulled out of her driveway. Driving back to the farm, I kept replaying everything that happened. I recently got released from juvie and felt cooped up. So, I decided to steal Jay’s bike and ride around town. Feel the warm breeze on my skin as I fly down the road. Not many people come out to the park near my house, so I headed that way; I wanted to be somewhere alone. Then, this girl was there, and I was slightly curious to see what kind of girl would be out here. I wasn’t trying to run into her, but wanted to get close and start a conversation. Nothing happened as I tried to stop the bike, so I yelled out to her but crashed into the poor girl anyway.
What an idiot, I thought while thinking back to it, but I still smiled at the whole interaction. She was a cute girl, and I knew right away that she wasn’t someone from this part of town, but it did surprise me to find out that she was the priest’s daughter. At Two Rock High, a lot of the guys I hung out with before I dropped out would talk about how they wanted to ‘corrupt’ the innocent princess and would go into detail about the nasty shit they wanted to do to her. My mind might be fucked up, but if there’s one thing my Ma taught me, it was to treat a girl with respect.
I pulled up and parked the truck by the side of the house. A deep sigh escaped my lips, and I ran my fingers through my hair. She probably judged me so hard on my home compared to hers. I don’t think we’ll ever meet again. It was a fluke in the universe that our paths crossed. I slid out of the truck and made my way up the steps to the front of the house. I could hear my Ma yelling from the inside and prepared myself to walk into whatever was happening behind the door.
“How often do I have to tell you boys not to bring animals in the house if they’re dripping blood!”
“Quit yelling at me! We didn’t even bring any animals home today!” Pa spat back.
“Then how do you explain this!” My Ma pointed at the blood drops on the ground. My eyes drifted to see small blood drops trailing to the bathroom. They had to have happened earlier. The blood was dripping down her leg. “And where were you?” Ma spoke to me sternly.
“Out,” I answered.
“Damn it, Dale, you’re supposed to stay home.”
“Don’t worry, Ma. I wasn’t getting into any fights.” I grabbed an apple from the middle of the table and headed into my shared bedroom.
“You don’t leave this house alone, ya hear me!” She yelled from the kitchen.
My younger brother, Jay, was lying on his bed in the corner with his headphones covering his ears and flipping through one of the few comic books he owned. He didn’t notice as I flopped onto my bed opposite his and smiled at the ceiling like a dork. It’s too bad that would be the first and last time I ever saw her.

Hey guys! I know this chapter is shorter; there will be a few short chapters, but most will be longer! I was listening to a song earlier today that gave me better ideas for the story (hehe) so I'm excited to write them and have y'all read it! Reader and Dale's story is going to be a rollercoaster! You get to experience life with him before the robbery, and don't worry everything will lead up to that point!

RELATIVES: Brooke, her mother’s younger sister, Deceased. And unnamed paternal family members; mention of her deceased grandfather.
FRIENDS: Her best friend was the unnamed younger sister of Jessica (Dale’s crush)
EARLY LIFE: Emily was born in late April 1980, exactly 3 years and 1 week after Dale, and exactly one month after Jay, on the same day. So, when he was born and his mother, Sharon’s sister and Emily’s aunt died, and Sharon adopted him, she passed him as her daughter’s fraternal twin and raised her two oldest to consider him their sibling. While Dale and Tyler, their older brothers, grew up treating him as such, they both knew the truth, though Tyler, being older, was more aware of it. Emily was kept in the dark by her mother and learned about it way later.
Their brothers, Tyler and Dale, were respectively 7 and 3 years older than the “twins”. Both helped raising and caring for them, but essentially Tyler as most of the responsibility to care and protect his siblings fell on him as he was the eldest. Dale was very playful, and much more careless and tempestuous so Tyler also had to deal with him, on top of everything else, and was somewhat of a bully towards Jay, at some point using a BB gun on him. He teased him way more than he did Emily because when he did, Tyler would kick his ass (metaphorically speaking, or not), so he contented himself with making jokes. Sometime after Emily was born, Sharon let an almost 8-year-old Tyler hold his baby sister and it seemed to form some kind of bond already as he never forgot how she looked at him with her big eyes and smiled. He grew up to be very protective of his family but even more so of his sister, being on the contrary, quite distant and unaffectionate towards Jay, though he did care for him as well. But throughout their lives, he seemed to subtly, or not, make Jay understand that he cared more about Emily, as if he wasn't as much family.
Until she entered high school, Emily’s favourite brother was beyond the shadow of doubt, Tyler. He raised her and Jay since they were babies and kept Dale from teasing her, teaching her valuable skills, making her grow up to be someone very handy and skilful. She never realized that he felt some resentment and jealousy towards them still, but mostly towards Jay as he knew he wasn’t his biological brother and more or less subconsciously held it against him. He knew everything about his younger siblings, how they kept a squirrel as a pet when they were young, and he knew before she told anyone that she started liking grunge music when she was 11 or 12. For her 12th birthday, he got her the Nevermind album from Nirvana and a CD player, which she ended up sharing with Jay. He didn’t get such gifts for either of his brothers. She already idolized Tyler since she was a child, but he had officially become her favourite brother. At the time, and because she was too young to work, and they weren’t exactly rich, she wanted to find a way to get some money to get herself a pair of Converse, to do like Kurt Cobain so Tyler got her to help him fix things around the house and do chores and a month later, he came home with a box and gave her a pair of black converse, which she started wearing 24/7 at school.
She had a rocky relationship with her father and was quite scared of him for a while, mainly because he could get violent when drunk and hit their mother sometimes and would hit Tyler and Dale too when they got in the middle. But when she was younger, maybe 8 or so, he one day brought home some rabbit he had caught and she wouldn’t listen to him and sit down because she wanted to go play outside with Jay but also because she didn’t want to skin the animal, so he smacked her across the face, bringing her to tears and she ran off. She hid in the barn, in a corner, curled up and quietly crying, until Tyler, then 15-year-old, found her. He had a bruise on his cheek, and she cried even more and asked if he got hit because of her. He dismissed her worries and got her to come out and help him somewhere else on the property. At dinner, her father awkwardly apologised, coming up with excuses and empty words, talking a lot but basically saying nothing, and she just nodded, not really saying anything. She already didn’t trust her father, or feel safe around him, but she certainly wouldn’t after that. After that event, Dale would always crack jokes and used the fact that he was always teasing Jay to make her laugh. He very lightly teased her too but with Tyler watching her, he never went as far as he did with Jay. She was definitely Tyler’s favourite too. The first memory he had with her was her smiling at him as a baby, so he hated seeing her cry. He was as protective of his mother as he was of his sister.
When she and Jay entered High school, they quickly found out how well-known their family actually was in that school, because all four Holt kids went there and the parents too back in the day. During their first year, Tyler was already 21 and very much working and Dale was already out of school, having dropped out about a year prior, and he would come pick them up everyday when Tyler couldn’t. Jay and Emily were in the same classes, so they were always together but as the freshman year went on, she made friends with other people in some of the classes they didn’t share, though always trying to include Jay in the group, but he went back to staying alone. By the end of the first semester, she had ditched her new friends and preferred to hang out with her brother, though she had kept one good friend, another girl from the group she hung out with and one boy that she liked. The two siblings began being isolated by their classmates. They would often call Jay a “weirdo” or “loser” and she would defend him. She acted exactly like Tyler did with their mom. She almost got into a fight with a couple of other kids at the school and after telling Tyler, he basically scolded her - more out of worry for her than actual anger - and told her not to get into any fights and not act like Dale, which for some reason made her want not to listen to him.
She began to act as Jay’s protector at school and it emboldened her, she was more rebellious, and it reflected in her relationship with her dad. She started to test his limits, which was probably not the best idea as he would get mad and try to hit her, but she often managed to dodge and run away, Tyler and Dale getting hit in her place, which she felt bad for. She began to think Tyler hated her because she realized he was more distant. In the beginning of the second half og her freshman year of high school, she met again a boy who was in the friend group she had temporarily joined in her first year, but he had developed a crush for her. She reciprocated his feelings and they shared a kiss. He asked her out and one week-end, Emily lied, saying she was going for a girl's pajama party as her best friend's house when really, she was going to the arcade with her boyfriend. The next morning, Sharon told Tyler to go get his sister and when he got to Emily's friend house and she wasn't there, he asked to use the landline to call his mom and told him. Sharon told him to drive around town and come home. He came home half an hour later and she was already there, getting scolded in the kitchen because she didn't want to tell them where she was the night before. At some point, she stood up because she wanted to leave, and accidentally yelled back at her mom and her dad got angrier. He swung his arm in her direction and upon dodging him, she fell against the fridge, curled up, her arms up in front of her face, eyes widened and her whole body shaking like a leaf.
Tyler and Dale got inbetween her and their dad and got hit in her place. Later, she told Tyler where and who she was with the night prior and told him she was with a guy from school. He told her not to lie and she admitted that he was her boyfriend. Dale heard and got worked up knowing a boy "touched her" and she yelled that nobody touched her and it took Tyler shoving him to make him shut up. One day at school, Dale came to pick up his siblings and he saw Emily come out of school with a boy. When she crossed his gaze and saw him, she put a distance between her and the boy but he now knew who her boyfriend was. He walked up to them and beat him up bloody. He was arrested and because he wasn't yet 18, he was sent to juvenile detention. She wouldn't talk to Dale for months after that, and didn't speak to him during the three months he spent in juvie. The boy was transferred to another school and wouldn't talk to her anymore, telling her her brother was a "fucking psycho". By the end of their second year of high school, as they turned 16, Jay dropped out and she really was alone now. She had her best friend left and that was about it for the next two years of high school.
Then, in May 1998, the events of the game happened. She wasn’t supposed to be involved in their plans, but she refused to stay behind, and Tyler agreed to let her come along, on the condition she did exactly as he said.

holt's speech hadn't helped much, but jake expected there wasn't anything that could help him ease his mind at the moment. five hours ago, an announcement on the radio called about an active shooter situation, and your name, alongside a badge number, had echoed through the radio, pricking at the ears of the nine-nine's interest and instilling a deep sense of fear through all of them. all, but especially one in particular.
the squad didn't know about you and jake yet. it had only been a couple months, neither of you had been sure yet and the rest of the group knowing could only danger things worse. an agreement had been made to not tell anyone.
all it meant now, though, was that everyone was even more confused at jake's worry for you. the way his knee bounced, ends of his fingers tapping against the desk as he tried to focus on the current b&e he was working on. the crew were confused because, yeah, it made sense he was worried but they had never seen him this worried before.
jake needed to do something, and soon. more and more announcements on the radio were coming through with different codes and updates on what was happening, but none of it of any interest to them. for the first time since he bought the phone, he had it on pinging, just in case you called, or someone called on your behalf.
every phone call that came through on someone's desk had everyone sitting up to see who it was. even holt had turned off his new york philharmonic orchestra recording that he always had playing, in order to focus on the radio and any call that came through for him.
terry came through the elevator, holding a pile of pizzas in one hand, and charles followed behind, holding enough cups of coffee for everyone. "listen guys, i know none of us are going to leave this place until we hear back from y/n, so charles and i went and got pizza and coffee for the squad. eat up."
the two went around putting the food and drinks around the desk, but along the way, terry noticed jake just staring at his desk, pupils glazed over. he took a pizza and coffee over to him, sitting down at the chair beside his desk.
"y'alright jake?" he spoke, pushing the coffee towards the cop.
jake just hummed, shaking his head out of his funk and picking up the pen again to continue writing. terry was too fast, though, plucking the pen from his hands and continuing to push the coffee further towards him.
"drink it, jake, and eat the pizza, it's nearly 8pm and i haven't seen you eat since your breakfast." he pushed.
he shook his head. "m'fine."
terry almost laughed, raising an eyebrow at him. "yeah, clearly. listen, i know you're worried about her, we all are, but there's nothing we can do. she's strong, she can handle herself. you have to trust the people there and you have to trust her."
"i appreciate the sentiment, sarge, but you don't understand." he spoke, shaking his head and finally accepting the coffee, taking a sip of it as terry furrowed his eyebrows at jake.
"what do you mean?"
jake looked up and around at the precinct. rosa and amy were stood around charles' desk, trying to cheer each other up while talking about a weird case form a couple weeks ago. hitchcock and scully were, as usual, oblivious to the whole situation, and gina was chatting with holt in his office. they all had such a good relationship, they were a family.
but it was clearly still missing you, jake knew that. he thought to himself for a bit, then turned back to the sergeant, shrugging at him and not knowing how to traverse the conversation. "how would you feel if sharon was a cop and she got in an active shooter situation like this?"
"i'd storm into the place and make sure she was safe." he hadn't yet caught on, but the cogs were certainly turning.
"and holt has told me to do the exact opposite. can you see why i'm so antsy now?" jake had reached a stage of worry so new he had just sort of, shut down. his voice was low, calm, and he shrugged as he spoke.
terry shook his head. "but you and y/n, aren't-" he paused. "are you?"
that same second, holt came storming out of his office, on the phone with someone. it caught everyone's attention, and diverted jake and terry away from the conversation they were having. the phone call seemed urgent, and the way holt had come out of his room told everyone they could assuming it was about the shoot situation, and probably even more so about you.
he put down the phone in his pocket. "y/n has ben shot. they don't think it's fatal but she's on the way to the hospital now, i think we should all go."
jake was the first one to stand up and grab his coat, opting for the stairs over the elevator.
you laid peacefully in the hospital bed, shoulder wrapped up from where the bullet had hit you. it was weird. jake thought it was weird, he'd truly never seen you so peaceful before. even when you had stayed over at his, you'd moved around in your sleep. but it had been three days now, your body needing time to recover from the blood loss, and you hadn't moved in inch.
the doctor said you would wake up soon. the rest of the squad had been needed back at the precinct, but at the news of you and jake being an item, holt had given permission for him to stay - charles had even bought him over some case files to work on while he waited for you.
he was currently working on the same b&e he had been trying to finish the paperwork for when you first got shot. there were only a couple things to fill in to finalize the case, but he just wanted to get it done. and now knowing you were alive and would wake soon, he was able to concentrate on it more than previously.
it was as jake put the file back down on the table, after having filled in the last box, when you shuffled yourself under the hospital covers. you murmured, catching jake's attention, as he shuffled himself to sit up in his chair. oh my god, you were waking up.
"fuck-" you coughed, eyes opening to the bright lights of your hospital room. he chuckled, pulling his chair closer to the bed. "what the fuck happened?"
the grin on his face was something else, seeing you, awake and talking, he felt like his heart could burst. "hey honey."
lifting your head up a bit, you started to get a better idea of your surroundings, feeling the dull ache around your shoulder and the bandage wrapped around it. "i got shot, didn't i?"
"yes, you did." he had a soft smile on his face now, taking your hand in his as he let you wake up a bit. "you've been out three days."
your eyes widened at the news, shaking your head. "what?"
"i've never seen someone need so much sleep." he laughed, squeezing your hand.
"no, no." you stopped him, his smile dropping as you did so, letting yourself sit up slightly as you turned towards him, eyebrows furrowed as you went to speak. "jake, have you been here three days?"
the detective paused, eyes widening. he looked towards his girlfriend as he realized that he had, in fact, stayed here three days, in the same clothes, eating food from the vending machine at the end of the corridor, and sleeping on the chair he was sat in right now. he had never done that for anybody before - he never would have even thought of doing it for anyone else before.
but you had been shot. you were in an active shooter situation, already in danger, and then you had had someone shoot a bullet directly into your shoulder. you must have been so scared, no one else from the nine-nine you knew, he didn't want you to wake up by yourself, without knowing what happened or where you exactly were.
"yes?"
you sighed, a blissful smile on your lips as you resting a hand on his cheek. "oh jake, you beautiful bastard."
he laughed. "a very odd take on a very loving relationship, but okay."
"i love you." you smiled, realising that you hadn't said it before, but if there was ever a time for it more than now, you would eat your hat. it was the perfect moment. "and you don't have to say it back, i know-"
"i love you too." he grinned, bringing you forward to press a kiss to your forehead. "oh, and the whole squad know about us now."
shrugging, you let yourself fall backwards into the pillows, jake resting back into his own chair. "eh, it's fine now, i supposed. i mean, i just told you i loved you and i don't plan on going anywhere so i don't see why they can't know."
jake laughed, smiling at you with a look he'd never sent anyone else before, "yeah, me neither."

Just Us²
The Party (Part 2)
---------------------------------------------------
TW: Kissing, pet names, fluff, the squaddd, sweet Jake, happy "couple", fake relationship
A/N: Again, thanks to my wife, I'm getting this out as soon as possible. Love you @anyalikeslasagna!! I was also asked to tag @angieisme. Enjoy y'all!!
-------------------Jake Peralta------------------
You stood in front of the body sized mirror, trying to get the perfect picture to send to Jake. Your heels wouldn't look right in the normal pose you did, and the dress would ride up.
You decided on just lifting your leg a little, and making a little kiss-y face. "Perfect!" You exclaimed, sending it to him and then texting, 'im readyyy come onn'.
He replied quickly with a 'omw, look gorgeous btw 💅🏻', which made you giggle. You fixed your dress, grabbed your mini purse, and grabbed a drink from the fridge while waiting for your 'boyfriend' who you really, really want to be your boyfriend.
A knock pattered your door, startling you. "Coming!" You said in a sing song voice. You opened the door to a Jake you haven't seen before. He was dressed up, his shirt well buttoned up and a dark sage color. His black slacks and matte shoes matched perfectly with your shoes.
"You look even better in person, princess." He grinned. You giggled, blushing softly. "Thanks. You look amazing, too, Jakie." The name you called him made him pause, but he didn't mind it.
You stepped into his sort of clean car, the passenger seat cleaned out especially for you. "Thanks," You quietly said when he opened the door for you. "No problem, love." He replied. "Were not even at the party yet, why are you calling me these names?" You asked, buckling yourself in and watching him drive towards the precinct. "Getting into character." He smiled, his cheeks red.
When you finally arrived, he hopped out, opening your door for you. "So, before we go in, I'm gonna be holding you close to me as often as I can, ok? That good?" He asked you, fluffing up your hair for you. "Yeah, that's good." You smiled, looking into his eyes, admiring him.
He held your hand, your tiny fingers interlinked with his lengthy ones. You heard, you think, Terry call from across the room as you stepped out the elevator. "Jake! This must be the lady!" He smiled, his shirt way too tight for him, but you could see who you asssumed to be Gina eyeing him, so you knew she liked it.
"Hey, Terry! Yes, this is her, my gorgeous baby. Is Sharon here?" He asked, kissing your cheek after introducing you. You smiled at Terry, looking around for the only one you sort-of knew, Rosa. "Baby, where's Rosa?" You asked shyly. "She's over in the corner, babe. You can go see her, I gotta talk to Holt anyway. Have fun, love." He smiled, kissing you softly, holding you, then letting you walk away.
Jake walked with Terry, staring at you while you walked away. Rosa looked up, smiling softly then correcting herself when she saw you. "Hey, Rosa! Long time no see, girl." You smiled, hugging her around the neck. "I'm only letting you hug me because I like you. Never again." She growled. "Shut up, you know you love me." You nudged her arm. She grinned. "Yeah, thanks for getting me with that girl. She's the woman of my dreams, man. I love her." You smiled at her heartfelt confession that she'd probably never share with anyone.
"Good. Me and Jake are coming up on 4 months now. I really think I love him.." You closed your eyes, voice all lovey. "That's great. Why don't you go to him? He's been staring at you the whole time you've been over here. Seems like he loves you too." A chuckle escaped her lips. You gasped at the laugh. "Ok, I'll be back, boo." You replied, patting her forehead.
You walked over to Jake, letting his arm slink around your waist as he talked to Captain Holt more. You shook hands with him, introducing yourself quietly. "Well, I'm happy Jake finally found his one." Holt said seriously, his facial expression blank with no emotion.
"I'm happy I found him too. I think he might be the one." You whispered, covering your mouth from Jake, hearing a soft chuckle from the captain and a quiet smile before he went back to his regular R.B.F.
"Well, I'm gonna get some drinks. Capin' you want one?" He asked before pecking your cheek. "No. Flavor means nothing to me. Thank you." He went on, sipping a water bottle. This is why Jake always says he's insane.
Jake comes back with a cup of what you assumed to be punch, then took a sip. He looked hot even when drinking a CHILDREN'S drink. What does this mean? Do you really, like, actually like Jake? You can't. That's wrong. You thought and thought, until he caught you staring at him. "Whats up, baby? You ok?.." He whispered into your ear, his arm wrapping around your waist.
"Huh? Oh, yeah, I think I'm fine. Just got a little headache." You replied, looking around to see if anyone was near or talking to you for Jake to call you that. There wasn't. Your cheeks warmed pink. "Ok, we'll, we can go home if you want, ok? Most people are clearing out anyway." He ruffled his fingers through his hair, placing his hand on your lower back, making you shiver softly.
"Ok then, uhh..let's go. I need to say goodbye to Rosa and Charles first. We're like..best friends now." You smiled at Jake, his goofy grin smiling back at you.
After saying your goodbyes, Jake kissed your lips softly. He stayed by your face for a minute, then backed away when he realized what he was doing. Hopefully nothing would escalate to the point he would see the damp spot on your panties.
Jake opened his car door for you, kissing your cheek before shutting it. "Jake, there's no one out here, why'd you do that?" You asked, putting on your seat belt. "Oh, really? Could've sworn I saw Terry.." He winked at you before driving you to your apartment.

I anxiously sat on my bed, holding my knees to my chest, watching the second hand on my clock go tic’ tic’ tic.’ It was fifteen minutes until midnight, which meant it was fifteen minutes until I was supposed to sneak out of my house. I still can’t believe I told Dale Holt I would do this a few hours ago. Pins and needles were shooting through my body, and my legs were shaking uncontrollably. The only bad thing I’ve done is lie to my parents. Going against them like this created a knot in my stomach, and I was debating not going and just staying home. I know he would be disappointed, but surely he’ll understand. I got up from my bed and started pacing back and forth. Both my parents are sleeping, and their room is on the opposite side of the house from mine. The only person I worry about is my brother, whose room is next door, and he could hear me leave through my window.
I decided that I couldn’t risk being caught by my brother. He would make things worse for me than they already were, and I couldn’t bear any more of the treatment I’d been getting. I walked over to my desk chair and grabbed my pajamas, which were folded neatly on the seat. I had already dressed for the occasion: a plain black crew neck that was a bit oversized, light denim mom jeans, and a pair of white sneakers. I even had a bag I put together with snacks and a blanket. Now that I think about it, he probably would’ve laughed at me for bringing all these things when sneaking out. My cheeks heated up just thinking about the embarrassment. I was about to take the crew neck off when I heard a weird tapping behind me. It wasn’t loud, but enough to get my attention. I turned around to see a boy’s face peeking through my window. My heart stopped for a moment, and a scream caught in the back of my throat.
Dale Holt was standing outside my window.
I ran towards my window and quickly opened it. “Shhhh!” I whispered to him while motioning to my lips for him to be quiet. “W-what are you doing here?” I whispered.
“I was tired of waiting and knew you would chicken out, so I decided to come to you instead.” His signature smirk was plastered on his face.
“I wasn’t going to chicken out! I was just about to leave!” My voice broke through the whisper I was doing, and I slapped my hand against my mouth. I wanted to prove to him that I wasn’t a chicken. I started pushing on the edges of the screen for my window to try and pop it out as quietly as possible. Dale stood back and watched me with amusement as I struggled. How did I do this that one time I chased after my brother? Maybe it’s because Dale’s deep blue eyes are so focused on me that it’s making me nervous.
“Let me, Doll,” he said after having had enough enjoyment of watching me fail. He pulled something out of his pocket to pop the screen clean off. I stood there in awe and embarrassment that it was so easy for him. “Are you ready?” he said in a low, husky voice. All I could do was nod my head.
As I went to climb out of the window, I stared back at the bag I had prepared for tonight. I quickly grabbed it, slinging the strap around my neck, and with help from Dale, I was out of the house. He gripped my hand tightly and pulled me with him as he started to run, forcing me to run alongside him. The adrenaline coursing through my veins made it easy to keep up with him. It felt like we were running away together, and slowly, all the anxiety I was feeling only ten minutes ago left my body.
When we reached Dale’s truck, I bent over and tried to catch my breath. Dale leans against the side of his vehicle and folds his arms over his chest. I curse his good physique for not winding him as much as me. After a minute, I regained my breath, stood back up, and stared at the boy before me. The moon glistened off his pale skin, making him look almost angelic. I quickly averted my eyes from him and looked towards the ground.
“So, Doll, how does it feel to be out after curfew?” His teasing tone drips from his mouth, and I can’t help but scuff in response.
“Why don’t you ask me again once we’ve been out for a while?”
“You’re right,” he pauses and then asks, “How does it feel to be out after curfew?” He flashes me his annoying grin. I roll my eyes, but a stupid smile still finds its home on my face.
“Anyways,” I say, “Where does the ‘oh so famous’ Dale Holt plan to take me.”
“I don’t know,” He shrugs his shoulders.
“What?” That was all I could get out. Doesn’t he know where we’re going? I thought he had a place planned when he asked me to sneak out with him.
“I figured we could drive around until we feel like stopping and make a spot to camp out for the night.” He winks at me. Oh my god. What was that for? My whole body is suddenly sweating in the cold air. There’s no way we’re camping somewhere, and does he plan to do something with me? Sneaking out was so stupid of me. Why did I think this would be an average outing with a friend? But then Dale speaks up like he’s reading the thoughts in my mind. “Relax, Doll. I’ll bring you back before anyone notices, and I won’t do anything to you… Unless you want me to.”
Why did he have to add that last part? Thankfully, it’s dark out, or he might notice how my face turned into a steaming tomato.
“L-l-lets get going, then.” I rush to the passenger side door and fling myself into the truck before he can say anything else.
Dale gets into the driver’s seat and puts the key into the ignition, causing the truck to roar to life. Once we were out on the desert roads, the brunette male turned the nob to the radio and blasted the music through the speakers. His eyes focused on the road ahead, and mine focused on him. He was carefree, with one arm hanging out the window, wind kissing the tips of his fingers, and the other tapping to the beat of the music while he steered the truck. When the next song came on, Dale turned to me and said it was his favorite. He spun the volume nob in hopes the music would get louder, but it was already up as loud as it could. His other arm returned to the car to clutch the wheel, and Dale began to bang his head along with the beat. Once the lyrics started, he turned to look at me and belted each word at the top of his lungs.
All I could do was stare in awe as he rocked out. A weird feeling washed through my chest as I saw Dale having fun. I couldn’t help but slowly lose myself in the beat and started to bang my head along with his. I didn’t know the lyrics to this song, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t have fun. His smile seemed to grow as he watched me let loose. His voice was off-pitch from the singers’, but oddly, it was my favorite tune. I could listen to him scream-sing any day.
We’ve been on the road for about an hour now, and we’ve been blasting music and dancing/singing along to each song. I didn’t know much about what was playing on the station he had on, but I was starting to love the banging of drums, loud guitar, and gritty vocals. At some point, I rolled down my window and stuck my head out, feeling the wind whip at my cheeks. I’m not sure what came over me, but the overwhelming feeling of screaming into the void of darkness got the better of me. So, I gave in to my intrusive thoughts and screamed as loud as I could.
Dale looked at me questioningly, “What was that, Doll?”
“I couldn’t help myself,” I could feel the heat rising to my cheeks.
Not too long after, Dale turned off onto a dirt road, slowing the truck down once we pulled into a large open field. He threw the vehicle in park, flung the door open, and jumped out. Dale made his way onto the other side and opened the passenger door for me. His soft yet calloused hand grabbed mine, and he helped me hop out of the truck. I didn’t need help; the truck wasn’t tall, but I wouldn’t refuse him. We walked a few feet from the car, and I pulled the blanket out of my bag and laid it down on the ground. Dale plopped his body on the blanket and stared at the sky. I followed his moves and laid down next to the male, making sure to keep a few inches between the two of us. The sky was beautiful. So many stars were visible tonight, and I was trying my best to find all the constellations I could. I looked towards Dale, who was lying there with his eyes closed. His face was soft, and he looked so peaceful.
“Are you sleeping?” I ask the brunette male.
“Just resting my eyes,” Dale spoke quietly.
“Mmhm,” I playfully nudged his side.
Dale propped himself up to face me, causing him to hover slightly over my body. “Not sleeping, Doll.” And thankfully, he laid back down, or else he’d noticed the heat blooming on the apples of my cheeks. Stupid boy is always getting me flustered. I hear the sound of a flame and glance over to see a white stick perched between the male’s lip as he lifts the lighter to said stick, causing the end to glow red as he draws the smoke into his lungs. Dale blows the cloud of smoke into the air and then catches my eyes with his. “You want a drag?” He questioned me.
“Uh, no thanks, I’m good.” Cigarettes give me the ick, but watching the way he inhales and how his jaw and neck move is alarmingly attractive.
“Good answer, Doll, you don’t want to get addicted to these things like me,” Dale lets out another puff.
“It would technically be illegal for me to smoke it, anyways,” I cringe at myself for the ‘goodie-two-shoes’ reply I just gave. I’m supposed to be breaking the rules tonight.
Dale stops mid-drag and looks at me wide-eyed, “What do you mean by that? Aren’t you 18?”
“I’ll be 18 next week,” I said casually.
“Ah, fuck,” Dale runs his hand over his face, and his body tenses up, “I should probably take you home now.”
Why was he freaking out? I know he’s 19, but the fact that I’m not quite 18 shouldn’t bother him. It’s not like we’re doing things we shouldn’t. We’re just hanging out as friends do, but—there is his Juve sentence, so maybe he’s scared people will get the wrong idea if they notice us together?
“You don’t have to worry about people getting the wrong impression about you,” I state.
“You don’t understand,” his voice becomes stern. “People will always have the wrong impression of me.” Dale stands up and motions for me to do the same. A sigh escapes my lips, and I stand up, collecting the blanket and shaking it off before folding it back into my bag. I probably shouldn’t push the issue. He could probably get in trouble if he’s on probation.
“Look, I know you went to Juve,” I said, looking Dale into his deep blue eyes, “I’m not sure why you did what you did, but the Dale I’ve met and have gotten to know is a kind guy. People are stupid to make assumptions based on a mistake you made.”
“Oh, Doll, you don’t know anything about me,” Dale’s voice was low. I could barely catch the hint of sadness behind his tone, but it was there, and it made my chest hurt. He made his way back into the truck, and I just stood where I was, staring at the space where he was standing. I wanted to ask what he meant, and something profound inside me wants to figure it out. Slowly, I returned to the truck and sat on the passenger side. Unlike the ride out here, which was loud and full of laughter, the ride back was quiet and tense. Dale stopped his truck in the same spot where he had picked me up and refused to look at me.
“Well, thank you for this experience,” I said while exiting the vehicle.
I slowly walked back to my house and climbed through the window, placing the screen back where it goes, shutting it, and locking it before drawing the curtains. Once I changed into my pajamas, I got under the covers and snuggled deeply into my blankets. Falling asleep was complicated, with all the thoughts running through my mind. Dale. What is his story?

Sorry for the long wait. I wish I could promise this won't happen again, but I'm afraid it probably will 🤧. This outing didn't go quite as planned for the reader and Dale. They both wanted to have a good time, but as Dale found out, the reader wasn't precisely 18 yet, and it kind of freaked him out. The last thing he wants is for someone to make a claim that he likes underage girls (even though she'll be 18 soon and he's 19). His record isn't clear, but if someone were to say something like that, it would ruin his life forever. He's also not that kind of guy and would gladly beat anyone to a pulp if they were. He also knows darkness lurks within him, and he feels touched that the reader thinks he's kind. But if she were to uncover all his monsters, he's sure she would think the same about him as everyone else.

gone fishing
day 9 : wound ( from @adfaugust )
this isn’t the war they were promised, not even close. no safety in trenches, no bombs deployed from the air, far away from any damage. instead, they’re thick in the jungle, getting their heads blown off by traps, assailants nowhere to be seen. paul didn’t even want to be here, fought the draft to the last second, and now here he is, clutching a rifle and feeling sick to his stomach. wishes, not for the first time, that he’s just one of the ladies in the sick bay. sure, the injuries are horrible, but it’s better than being out here.
he’s playing nurse right now, surprised by his own strength as he starts lugging bear to the bushes, rifle swung dangerously over his back, where he can’t take it out if someone attacked. he needs his arms, anyway; bear’s in no shape to walk. he’s losing blood fast, a bullet in the side. and when paul pulls up his shirt to check, there isn’t an exit wound. considers, stupidly, if he could just pluck it out with his fingers, but he knows that’ll be worse, that he’s gonna give bear an infection. which he’s sure the poor guy already has, or maybe he’s just delirious from the pain.
“paul,” bear coughs, and he shows his teeth in a smile that’s gnarly, but not in a good way. it still seizes paul like his hand’s got a heart in its vice grip, and the sight of him must do something for the guy, since that grin only gets wider. “at home, in the barn… we got this kayak.”
bear’s got a tone in his voice that tells paul he’s on some long-winded story. he debates telling bear to save his strength, but there’s a real chance he’ll die out here before paul can get him help, so he lets it go. “yeah? what … what kayak?”
“beautiful — ” and bear cuts himself off with a series of coughs, blood coming up on his shirt in a way that makes paul feel faint — “beautiful boat. some men like their fancy cars and impressing women with ‘em. like their… their speedboats. but there ain’t no better joy than being the engine to your own vehicle.” still smiling broadly, bear claps a hand over paul’s. “i’ll take you out one day. once the war’s over. once the fish come back.”
“you’ll get there,” paul promises, shirt off so he can use it as a bandage, ripped all the way around and then some so he can get it wrapped. bear’s always been a big guy, hence the nickname, but he’s stronger than anyone else paul’s ever known. a little rough around the edges, and dante never liked him, but paul’s never liked dante much either. at least, he don’t got a lot of faith in the guy. paul didn’t know much about bear before getting drafted, where bear was already on his last few years. seemed like, if all went well, paul’d get out of this place four months before bear’s time was up. he signed up, twice — but he’s still in the trenches like all the other draftees. makes paul wonder if there was ever much of a choice. but bear sticks up for the little guy, and he prays with whoever needs it. lotta guys here are turning to faith. hard not to when people’s legs and arms are getting blasted off, when they go flying. and bear always matches paul drink for drink, indulges him when they get too drunk to keep pretending there ain’t an issue with what they’re doing.
he remembers now, suddenly, how many times bear has clapped him on the shoulder and told him he’s a good man. asked him earnestly if he’d make sure sharon’s cared for if he don’t make it back. paul has to wonder if bear knows. if he knows what feelings paul’s had for his girl. what feelings he used to have about bear — jealous and envious and hateful and awed all at once. similar, he guesses, to how he feels about his cousin.
bear squeezes paul’s hand. “we’ll get there.” paul’s always wondered why bear talks like he’s older than he is, like he’s on his deathbed. it makes it all the more chilling, knowing this is just a normal conversation, that bear could be anything, could be drinking or taking a swim or laughing by the fire, but instead, he’s dying and he talks the same.
paul flags down a tank and a couple of guys work to hoist bear up onto it, planning to take him out to where the copter can pick him up, take him to a hospital. can barely bring himself to let go of bear’s hand. “just take it easy, buddy. don’t you dare die on me.”
the guy only laughs, soft and self-loathing. “take care of sharon for me. take care of her.”
and when paul sees joyce with the bottle of alcohol, his lips twitch. gaze drifting to the woman bleeding out on the couch. and when he’s asked how she’s doing, he says, hard to say. i’ve seen it go a lot of different ways. cause it’s true. what’s also true is that a lot of those guys that made it still strung themselves up in the end, or took a bullet to their skull, or drowned themselves in drink. sure, the physical wound mended up, no infections, but what they suffered up there? in their minds? it ain’t as easy as getting an operation done.
see, paul and bear both made it out of vietnam. but they never went fishing on that kayak.
#as dusk falls#paul hayes#bear holt#sharon holt#adfaugust2023#pan writes#ive always been really fascinated by bear's and paul's dynamic esp since theyre both war vets that have clear ptsd and also served together#but i also really love thinking about what bear must have been like when he was young#since joyce compares dale to bear and even bear himself compares dale to him#so it's clear there IS a parallel there. so i love writing those parallels in#since it's not really ... i guess IMMEDIATELY obvious in the game itself?#also yes there is a kayak in the barn. idk why there is one but it's there so this fic kind of hinges on#the kayak + the parallel to dale's lines when he's about to get shot by the sniper#you know the ones. goddamn i can't wait to be on a beach somewhere ...#eating tamales ... drinking tequila ...#and im like paul if you were there you'd be SCREAM SOBBING 'you'll get there'#anyway this is just a quick and dirty little thing for bear x paul

Ok hear me out! Haikyuu V-league players x Brooklyn 99 AU
Atsumu = Jake (need I say more?)
Sakusa = Amy (duh. Has to be if Atsumu is Jake. Also we know Sakusa’s family is rich/strict which fits with Amy too.)
Bokuto = Boyle (would 100% be Atsumu’s hype man and accidentally make innuendos. Plus Akaashi as Genevieve??)
Aran = Terry (buff, so done with Atsumu’s shit, and would 100% be amazing dad material. Then we can make Kita Sharon because yes. Just yes).
Ushijima = Holt (I know he’s the same age as them but they give off the same vibe. Plus Sakusa admired Ushijima like Amy admires holt and that’s so funny to me)
Suna = Gina (has known Atsumu for years and, therefore, has blackmail. Plus the same phone addiction + goddess era vibe.)
Hoshiumi = Rosa (that tiny man has so much rage it just makes sense to me lmao. Plus Rosa and Jake met on the academy and Atsumu and hoshiumi met at Japan Youth Camp???)
Kageyama + Hinata = Scully and Hitchcock (HEAR ME OUT!! In this AU they’d be the chaotic newbies who argue with one another constantly, lose evidence every other day, ask dumb questions, and have been resigned to paperwork because, as much as we love them, it’s unclear how they got this far 😂)
Oikawa = Madeline Wunch (SIMPLY BECAUSE HE IS SO SMART AND HATES USHIJIMA!! I can’t help but feel like they’d insult each other to the ends of the earth and Oikawa would love to watch Atsumu and Kageyama (and the others) suffer)
Kuroo = Vulcher (I love Kuroo so I hate to make him a dick but given his position in ‘poaching’ the v-league players for the All Star Game I liked the word play)
Kyotani = Pimento (I know he dates Rosa for a bit but I legit think no one else embodies the chaos and violence so yeah!)
Tsukishima = Melanie Hawkins (is 100% smart enough to pull that over the others for sure)
Anyone else people can think of? Or who would suit roles better? Idk this just crossed my mind while I was bored at work 🤪
