Five Truths: Molefang

i.

Born with a twisted, exposed maw, no one expected her to live very long, with many already mourning the experiences she would never have as she drew her first breaths…

She showed them all, very soundly, by confidently heading a path filled with far more life than any of those who doubted her.

She never wanted to fall in love. It turned her nose up, felt like nothing more than a distraction.

Perhaps she never truly did, anyway… Infatuation is such a cruel trick on the mind, after all.

But then Amberface stepped into her life, so purposeful and radiating power, displaying a softness for her only in the shadows… and she was drawn to it.

Even as she grew older, she always was drawn to such sorts of energy… But as she grew older, she ignored it to pursue far softer hearts.

As an adult, the numerous paths laid out before her frightened her.

There were so many options to fill her time with. Digging deep beneath the earth for ores, smelting them, turning them to weapons. Keeping up with the camp, decorating it for events, upholding and sharpening the defenses. Cooking, fighting, crafting… What should she do?

When her cubs were born prematurely, so small and sickly, and she lifted her head to watch Sagewhisker save the lives of herself and her three little new-blooms, her first action once she recovered was to follow in those pawsteps.

And then giving two away, to escape the tides of destiny and fate, and returning to the weakest, secured her decision.

She never regretted her decision to break her family. The “deaths” of two of Amberface’s heirs shook the whole faction, but she knew the horrors that would await them all if they had a chance to grow under her…

She saw it in fruition, with Goldentongue. As he was subjected to his mother’s tight-clawed control, her verbal abuse, the expectations piled high on the shoulders of one so young, too young…

And again. She saw it in fruition, with Goldentongue. As he began to slink through the shadows. Amassing supporters from elsewhere. Returning to his place beneath his mother with a pelt stinking of hundreds of different scents that, once, he might have allowed Molefang to clean away…

But not now.

Not with those eyes so firmly fixed on the darkness ahead of him…

I think a huge amount of looking good, in terms of aesthetic and confidence, is just making conscious choices about your appearance. I've felt bad about my appearance when I felt the lack of options for myself, and I've seen myself immediately brighten up upon getting to actively putting together a look that reflects my self-image and tastes. A lot of people who "don't take care of their looks" are just not making choices - wearing what they have around, not styling their hair, doing what's easy, and not investing much of themselves in what they wear and how they wear it.

It doesn't surprise me at all that a lot of trans people would get a glow-up when they transition and really have to start making new, deliberate choices about how they want to look as part of that. You're re-inventing yourself through aesthetic choices, deciding what feels like you, and I think anyone can potentially have that experience and benefit. Trans folks are more likely to stumble into that particular joy!

btw the biggest lie you will ever be told about being trans is that transitioning will make you ugly. that could not be further from the truth: i never got compliments on my appearance ever, but after i transitioned, began dressing like myself, wore my hair the way i wanted to, and especially started T, i have gotten more compliments than i ever have before in my life. people can tell when you look like yourself, like who you're meant to be. it's beautiful, attractive, and sexy. transition will not make you "ugly". it will make you yourself, and that's inherently beautiful

Honestly, it’s quite shocking how easy you can tell people apart based on their outfits. My takeaway from trips to tourist hotspots.

American tourists (young women) have such chaotic outfits. I don’t know how else to describe it. The message sent out by most looks (whether it’s ‘eccentric’ Accessoires or ‘insta ready’ polyester slip dresses) is ‘this is fashion! (Right?)’. A lot of unflattering middle parts. Germans dress like they’re about to model for Northface (I’m counting myself in this. kms for real). Even if they’re not actively wearing the brand, you can feel it lurking under the surface. Jeans and practical little cross body bags, frumpy sweaters — even in stylish variations, there is an implied fleece jacket. Italians dress like they’re aware of their body in a good way.

DPxDC idea that has been floating around my head for a few months now:

Gotham, given its whole... thing with Lazurus Pools and general bad vibes, has a ghostly representative. Lady Gotham, when she bothers to be coporeal, looks like an influential lady from the 1920s, straight art deco elegance. A real classy girl.

Jazz is touring college campuses around the US. She has full ride offers from Gotham University, Metroplis College, and Star City State, to name a few. Danny, upon hearing that his sister is going to GOTHAM of all cities, decides he is going on this trip with her. He might be only 15, but his big sister isn't getting mugged while he has half an afterlife left to live!

Lady Gotham is all a flutter! Why the last ghost king was so frumpy! King Phantom is so handsome and powerful, and he is coming to her city. She absolutely has to show off her best side! She feels like a teenaged girl getting her home ready before a new beau comes to visit. She's flustered, she's nervous.

Meanwhile, John Constatine wakes up with cosmic alarm bells going off because something really, really bad is happening. He investigates to dicsover that for the past three days Gotham has not had a single crime.

No murders, muggings, hell not even a single jay walker!

Gotham the most cursed place on the North Or South American continent is suddenly more squeaky clean than whatever small farm town Superman grew up in.

No crimes, no smog in the air. Crime Lords seemingly gone in a puff of smoke, Assassins asleep in their beds.

Its so freaky. Even Batman is spooked and he is never spooked by anything.

Constantine is certain some demon or other nefarious being is harnessing Gothams cursed energy for some evil plot. Gathering the power to use it like a nuclear blast. Batman is concerned about mass mind control.

Lady Gotham is doing the metaphysical equivalent of hiding all of your stuff in a closet before a guest comes over because you dont have time to actually clean. She had to shoulder the thing closed! She just knows that when the lock fails there will be a huge mess.

Jazz and her family are just surprised about how nice Gotham U's campus is. She'd heard it was so dark and dangerous, but everyone is smiling and pleasant to her! Danny is just happy Jazz is safe from various villains.

So we have Batman investigating his rogues gallery for mind control plots, Constatine hunting for demons, Jazz and her family taking a walking tour of Gotham U, and Lady Gotham using every bit of her ghostly powers to make sure her damned, cursed city doesnt embarrass her in front of her crush!
