How often do they sleep together?

Once the relationship is a go every night, but not in a sexual sense as Rowan is not ready (also I haven't quite decided if their first time is the coffin or not) and he would never ever think of rushing her. Emmrich is horrified when he sees Rowan's sleeping situation at the Lighthouse. And will not hear of leaving his darling to sleep in a cold, damp room on that abominable sofa with nary a pillow or blanket that isn't her pack and cloak (his exact words).

It starts with them just in the same bed, he being a gentleman offers to go sleep elsewhere, but Rowan asks him to stay. So he puts a bolster pillow down the centre of the bed so she feels safe and as a barrier. Which lasts all of her first nightmare. He knew she sleepwalked because of bad dreams, what he didn't know was how it all started before she started walking. Lots of whimpering, talking in her sleep (he didn't know his heart could break over such innocuous phrases like No, Don't, or It hurts) so how can he not hold her and try to soothe her and the rest is history (OK the rest is kind of written but not really, and I want to keep some things a mystery for later fic chapters)

Where do they sleep?

Once the relationship is a go they're both in Emmrich's bed in his room at the Lighthouse (I am an Emmrich has a secret bedroom behind a bookcase truther) and again in Emmrich's bed in his flat/house in Nevarra once they go home. Before, Rowan didn't have a bed either in the Lighthouse or Nevarra. She barely had a room in the Necropolis before she had to leave after the War of the Banners.

How do they prepare to sleep?

Emmrich I see as have a very structured routine. A bath followed by applying his various lotions and potions to his hair and skin, I'm not saying the man has the Thedas equivalent to a Korean skincare regime, but I'm also not not saying it. Puts oh his fancy pyjamas (he strikes me as a silk pjs kind of man) then a calming cup of tea before brushing his teeth, getting his clothes ready for the next day, putting the ones from that day in the laundry basket. Then finally gets in to bed to read for a while before going to sleep.

Rowan in comparison is a lot simpler, not because she doesn't want to, but because she couldn't afford the lotions etc and never had the time or space. A wash if she can, then braids her hair, puts on her old worn shift and heavily darned socks (she's always cold), brushes her teeth, and then crashes out on the nearest flat surface. If she even bothers going to bed in the first place. She, Lucanis and Neve are giving each other a run for the worst insomniac in the Veilguard. Bellara is disqualified because she actually falls asleep while she's working.

Once they're sharing a bed, suddenly Rowan has a multitude of lotions, potions, and oils that Emmrich gifts her. She also has beautiful nightwear and warm slippers, stockings, and wraps to wear if she gets cold. Her old shift may have "accidentally" got burnt after a mysterious, very localised fire.

What do they wear to sleep?

Emmrich is an absolute silk pyjamas man and nothing will make me change my mind. In sumptuous jewel colours and no doubt embroidered with gold wherever it won't be itchy.

Rowan had a simple linen shift that is very old, faded, much mended and while it used to be black it is now a dingy grey shapeless thing that she has slept in for years. It's also the shift she wears under her "formal" dress when needed, or is her other dress that she wears when she's not on an expedition or patrol. It's ugly, shapeless, but it's all she has.

After Emmrich sees it, he makes it his mission to a) make sure she has beautiful things to sleep in and b) remove that shift from existence entirely. It's not that he doesn't think she's beautiful in it, she is stunning in his eyes no matter what she wears or looks like. It's the sheer magnitude of neglect and a life bare of anything like kindness or affection, it encompasses.

Do they cuddle?

Yes. Rowan is always cold and Emmrich is warm, so she always ends up draped over him and snuggled in, no matter her intention when she goes to sleep. Add in her nightmares and Emmrich noting that if he holds her, they are less frequent, then he sees no reason why they should deny themselves the pleasure of sleeping in each other's arms.

What are their preferred sleep positions?

Emmrich is a side sleeper preferably and Rowan is a curl up as small as I can to keep warm and maybe no one will find me if I'm small sleeper by necessity/upbringing to start. Once they're in the sharing a bed stage, then Emmrich is still a side sleeper with Rowan cuddled to his chest with her legs draped over his hips and her arm over her chest.

They do also often end up with Emmrich on his back and Rowan draped over his chest more often than not. She's unconsciously trying to get as much of her on his warmth, and even in his sleep he could never refuse her anything.

How easy do they fall asleep?

Emmrich falls asleep relatively easily, as long as he's not deep in his research or too deep in his own head.

Rowan just doesn't sleep unless she is just about ready to pass out, and even then it depends on how much caffeine she can get in her system before she crashes. Until she's sharing a bed with Emmrich. It's the first time she feels absolutely safe and secure, add in how warm she is, and she's out like a light.

It's not always effective as she's very good at ignoring her body's needs, but Emmrich knows if he can get her horizontal and next to him, then she'll sleep. That's the easy part. Catching her and getting her to listen is the hard part.

Do they toss and turn a lot?

Emmrich no unless he's in his own head.

Rowan to start, yes. She has nightmares, or a Dread Wolf in her head, or just bad headspace. Again, it gets better once they're sharing.

Do they snore?

Emmrich has been known to on occasion snore, but it's not all the time. And it's more gentle wuffles than full on snoring.

Rowan doesn't.

Who hogs the blanket?

Emmrich. Mostly only at the start and because he's used to having blankets to hog. Rowan doesn't fight for herself, even in her sleep. But as they're usually cuddles together, the blanket hogging quickly becomes a non entity.

What do they dream about?

Emmrich has mostly innocuous dreams, lots of whimsy and fade walking. He does have nightmares occasionally of losing his parents, losing Manfred after Blackthorn and after Tearstone losing Rowan and his fear of death.

Rowan has nightmares more than dreams. It's part of why she doesn't like to sleep. Not going to go into her nightmare subjects because a) Spoilers and b) dark subject maters.

How easily do they wake up?

Emmrich wakes up easily, but he typically sleeps deeply, so he doesn't wake up to every noise or movement once he's asleep.

Rowan sleeps like a 9-tailed cat in a rocking chair factory. She sleeps poorly if she even sleeps at all and every little noise or movement wakes her. It's from all her years of solo expeditions deep in the Necropolis, where sleeping too deeply was the fastest way to die quickly.

Once they're sharing a bed, she sleeps a bit better because she feels safe, but she still wakes up at the drop of a pin.

How awake they are afterwards?

Emmrich is fairly awake and chipper after waking, even if he had a late night.

Rowan is wide awake as soon as she opens her eyes and is usually on the move before then. She's not happy about it, but her survival hinged on it for too many years to easily unlearn it.

She gets more relaxed as they continue to share a bed and feel safe to grumble and take her time as she wakes up. But it's rare.

Rook Volkarin and Emmrich Volkarin

How often do they sleep together?

Every single time. They have a hard time sleeping when they're apart.

Where do they sleep?

When they got together at the Lighthouse, Emmrich categorically refused to sleep on Rook's horrible thing of a chaise longue and Rook was moved into Emmrich's bedroom immediately (it's hidden behind a secret bookshelf passage).

How do they prepare to sleep?

Rook washes himself, brushes his teeth, gets naked, flops into bed. Maybe pesters Emmrich to read to him. Emmrich has a more involved routine with some skincare products Rook refuses to understand. And then he reads in bed for a bit, either aloud to Rook or just quietly to himself.

What do they wear to sleep?

Rook wears nothing, refuses to bother with it. Emmrich used to sleep in pajamas, but gave up on keeping the top half on after the twentieth time Rook asked him to take it off to cuddle.

Do they cuddle?

Oh yeah, Rook's a limpet. And Emmrich is a cuddler too of course, but would have given Rook his space if he wasn't into it. But he doesn't have to and they mostly fall asleep wrapped around one another.

What are their preferred sleep positions?

For falling asleep it's Emmrich on his back, Rook cuddled to his side with his head on Emmrich's shoulder. They switch sometimes. Once they fall asleep, Rook usually rolls off somewhere and sleeps on his stomach with at least one limb draped across some part of Emmrich. Emmrich sleeps on his side, facing Rook.

How easy do they fall asleep?

Rook mostly just conks out, unless the ol' ptsd comes knocking. Then it takes a lot of cuddling for him to fall asleep. Emmrich takes his time, because the man has a busy mind that thinks (and worries) about everything. But being pinned by his gremlin of a husband helps him fall asleep faster.

Do they toss and turn a lot?

Rook moves around a lot both awake and asleep. He only really stays still when he's had a nightmare and then he clings to Emmrich and won't be dislodged. Emmrich tosses and turns when he's stressed, but otherwise sleeps in a calm manner as befits a senior necromancer.

Do they snore?

Emmrich does, refuses to admit it. Manfred likes copying his snores. Rook snores when he has a cold and those sounds make Emmrich seriously consider sleeping elsewhere.

Who hogs the blanket?

The boys have separate blankets. Start off sleeping cuddling under Emmrich's and Rook just somehow burrows under his own whenever he inevitably rolls off. Emmrich then wraps himself in his blanket so only his nose and eyes show.

What do they dream about?

Rook has either very dumbass dreams (like learning to knit from a friendly spider kind of thing) or nightmares about all the fun trauma he's been through. Emmrich has the odd nightmare about losing his family, but those get less frequent as their relationship progresses. And otherwise he's having pleasant dreams of beautiful landscapes with his loved ones usually making an appearance.

How easily do they wake up?

Emmrich wakes on his own before dawn easily enough, but trying to rouse him from deep sleep is not easy when he's not ready yet. Needs to be poked and prodded for a long time and mutters in a very annoyed way about it. Rook is very hard to awaken unless there's a dangerous noise, say an explosion or a clatter of a skeleson's bones where said skeleson shouldn't be, accompanied by a mischievous giggle of his darling daughter. Then he's vertical before he even opens his eyes.

How awake they are afterwards?

Emmrich is annoyingly awake the moment he opens his eyes. Chipper and chatty and Rook doesn't get it and doesn't like to be expected to respond before breakfast. Rook is not awake after he drags himself out of bed. Dresses for the day while squinting at his husband as if it's his fault it's morning again. Full on slumped on the table next to his plate if forced to wake up extra early. He is not a morning person.

Runa Ingellvar x Emmrich Volkarin

How often do they sleep together?

As often as they can. They don't start sleeping together until they start, er, sleeping together, which is still pretty early in their relationship. They very much go through a honeymoon phase and want to be together as often as possible. At the start they're just falling asleep together after sex, but as the relationship progresses they also just sleep together, which is nice too.

In my canon Runa is also dating Harding and Emmrich is also dating Strife (though that's a lot later) so some nights they're with their other partners, or one might be out on a mission and the other might be back at the Lighthouse. But whenever they're in the same place and they're not with another partner, they're gonna be sleeping in the same bed.

Where do they sleep?

Though they have slept on the couch/chaise thing in Runa's room, it wasn't a great experience because there isn't a lot of space for two people (especially when one of them is very tall) and it doesn't have good enough back support, at least according to Emmrich. He's kind of worried Runa's gonna wreck her back sleeping there every night too, so they're usually in Emmrich's room (wherever that is).

How do they prepare to sleep?

Runa has some kind of nice skincare routine where she removes all her makeup and moisturizes. She also brushes her hair for a pretty long time to maintain its smoothness, and puts it in pigtails to protect it while she sleeps. Other than that, though, she basically just brushes her teeth, changes clothes and plops into bed.

Emmrich definitely has very good sleep hygiene. So a couple hours before bed he is winding down all stressful activities and drinking some nice relaxing tea. Then he’s taking a bath, also doing some kind of skincare routine, brushing his teeth, and putting on nice PJs. Then he sits up in bed reading until he gets sleepy 😴

What do they wear to sleep?

Runa just sleeps in like, a bra and underwear. Or nothing. It's more comfortable! I think she owns pajamas or a nightgown, but only wears them if she needs to leave her room or for camping or whatever.

Emmrich has a whole sleeping outfit of some sort. I do think the image of Emmrich in a Victorian style nightshirt is very funny, so maybe it's that XD Or it's like, a fancy pajama set.

Do they cuddle?

Absolutely. For them this is the main perk of sleeping in the same bed. Especially early on they'll fall asleep fully tangled together. Because Runa is so small she's kind of the perfect size to nestle against Emmrich, or even sleep on top of him. Even when they move beyond the honeymoon phase, by the end of the night they'll usually end up kind of wrapped around each other.

What are their preferred sleep positions?

Runa naturally moves during the night. So she's on her left side, she's on her right side, she's on her back, she's upside down. What position will she be in come morning? Who knows!

Emmrich naturally wants to be on his back, but he knows it's better for spinal alignment and preventing snoring to sleep on his side. He's not particular about the side when he's alone, but when Runa's there he always wants to be facing her, whether that's spooning or them both sleeping face to face. He'll often roll onto his back during the night, but that's okay because Runa will either end up on top of him or against him in a sort of side hug.

How easy do they fall asleep?

Runa's issue is that she refuses to go to sleep. She'll stay up way too late working on Veilguard-leader stuff, or just due to nervous energy. She kind of has to be coaxed into stopping and actually going to sleep. Luckily, Emmrich is pretty good at this. And once she's in bed she's out like a light due to sheer exhaustion.

Emmrich has more trouble falling asleep. He'll lie awake worrying about things or going over problems in his head. In some cases his thanatophobia might keep him awake. It's a bit easier with Runa there, but there are still some difficult nights where he doesn't fall asleep for awhile.

Do they toss and turn a lot?

Kind of covered above. Runa doesn't really toss and turn so much as change positions over the course of the night. She moves, but it's a gradual thing. Same with Emmrich. He'll just shift positions like once or maybe twice.

Do they snore?

Runa doesn't. Emmrich does here and there (mostly when he ends up sleeping on his back) but not super loudly.

Who hogs the blanket?

Runa is a natural blanket stealer, but because of the size difference between them it's more Emmrich. There's just a lot more of him to cover and sometimes Runa gets left without quite enough blanket :( She does her very best to steal back as much as possible, though, and once in awhile Emmrich wakes up to find Runa somehow totally cocooned in blankets.

What do they dream about?

Runa, being a dwarf, doesn't dream. Emmrich has a combination of nice dreams where he's exploring the Fade or just having nonsense stuff happen to him, and nightmares related to his various traumas and fears. Sometimes he also dreams about Runa ;)

How easily do they wake up?

Runa is a deep sleeper, and especially during Veilguard events is always tired, so she's very difficult to wake up. She's definitely one of those people who will be half-awake, say she's getting up, and then still be asleep like 30 minutes later. She'll also do this like three times before actually getting up.

Emmrich wakes up pretty easily, mainly because of his issues falling asleep. He's often half awake or in an early cycle of sleep for a large part of the night anyway. He's also trained himself to wake up early and get right to work, so he's one of those people who can't sleep past like 5am even if he's tired. He automatically wakes up before dawn and gets out of bed immediately.

How awake are they afterwards?

Runa is not a morning person and will be draggy and out of it for the first few hours of the day. Emmrich is very much a morning person, and once he's out of bed he's fully awake and energized. Even if he hasn't gotten enough sleep! Runa is envious.

some small kuroba updates : their pronouns are now they / he and i also knocked their tits clean off with that bat. 😔 ( more serious explanation for the change under the cut. tw for mentions of gender dysphoria. )

something i was thinking a lot about while i was away was kuroba's experience with gender and how they felt about their body. a major source of his dysphoria is his chest and i always imagined he'd get top surgery at some point in his life, so i think it makes more sense for him to get it done sooner rather than later.

now, kuroba had their top surgery done not too long after they graduated college, thinking it was better to handle it before having to shift their focus mainly on working at their family's flower shop. therefore, any previously drawn boob jumpscares have been retconned so that kuroba mainly sleeps in just their bottoms whenever they opt to not wear a tank top to bed.

the pronoun change was inevitable, i could feel it in my bones.

making them tea or another warm drink when you know its been forever since they've slept and trying to help them feel more tired

offering your lap to them so they can lay down on you as you run your hands through their hair, up and down their arms, talking quietly to try to lull them to sleep.
