The Ishigamis and The Gifts of Science
Dr. Stone is a love letter to humanity and its sciences. The main character, Senku, often acts averse to all forms of affection, and the only love he doesn't deny is his love for science. But Senku is so so full of love. He just expresses it in a way other than physical touch or words of affirmation. He gives.
But let's go back to the one who taught him so– Byakuya Ishigami, his father. The love of Senku's life.
Tumblr media
Byakuya is introduced in the tenth chapter of the manga as a dotting father who sells his car to present Senku with scientific instruments he will need for a more efficient research. This car is Byakuya's means of transportation, and given that he is crying and shaking in this scene, it could not have been easy for him to lose it. But his love for Senku is so big, that he wants to support his son's passion even if it means sacrificing a great convenience for him.
And Senku? Senku truly fell in love with science at this moment.
Tumblr media
If there is anything that Senku is, he is Byakuya Ishigami's son through and through. They may seem like two very different people, as Byakuya is an openly affectionate guy while Senku is more closed off with showing his true emotions. But Senku takes more from Byakuya than not, and one of them is by showing his love and/or care for others through giving the gifts of science.
And it starts with Byakuya.
[Bodysuit Acquired!]
Tumblr media
Byakuya had failed his first attempt at being an astronaut ten years back, but he doesn't give up and tries again. Senku then creates a bodysuit that manipulates muscle movement to help Byakuya pass his swimming test. And while the bodysuit doesn't quite help Byakuya to swim, the thought Senku had put into it had motivated Byakuya more than ever to pass the test. This is one of the fundamentals of gifting– sometimes, it really is the thought behind it that matters.
This motivation is what Byakuya credits during his interview with JAXA for passing the tests. He understands that Senku might not have given him any words of encouragement, but this bodysuit was all the words that were needed between them. Senku wants Byakuya to achieve his dreams just as badly. It's the way Senku shows his love for his father.
And it's the way Senku shows his love for others too.
[Glasses Acquired!]
Tumblr media
One of the primitive aspects of the Ishigami village is that it considers bad eyesight as a type of "disease". Fuzzy disease, to be exact.
Suika wears a melon mask at all times to help clear her eyesight, which Senku later reveals is due to the pinhole effect. She, however, has never told Senku or the others about having the fuzzy disease. Senku himself notes how odd it is for her to wear a melon around, and confronts her about it once he decides to create glass. This is one of the most beautiful scenes in Dr. Stone, as Suika finds out that her disease was never a disease, and is finally able to see as clearly as the others. Senku basically gives her perfect eyesight, something she didn't even know was possible before.
[Antibiotics Acquired!]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the most beloved people in this village is the priestess, Ruri. Two of Senku's new friends, Kohaku and Chrome are deeply affected by her unknown fatal disease. Senku is such a person who would help a stranger even if there is no benefit to do so (though he would never admit to it), what more a person who his new friends truly love and care about. He cures Ruri of pneumonia, giving her a chance to live a life without the worry of it being her last day every day.
[Cola Acquired!]
Tumblr media
Senku forms an alliance with Gen, who plays the role of Tsukasa's spy, for the promise of a bottle of cola. Both Senku and Gen are aware that the cola is only a front for Gen's loyalty to Senku and the Kingdom of Science, for Gen needs his superficial reputation as a comfort and cannot simply join them if there is no personal benefit for him to do so.
This cola is also the first gift post-petrification that Senku brands himself on, probably because it represents the first gift that is not out of necessity and leans toward a comfort/luxury that they both used to enjoy in the modern world.
For a modern man such as Gen, drinking his favourite soda in the stone world might have been one of the happiest days in his life.
[Cotton Candy Acquired!]
Tumblr media
Senku cares about people so much, even if the people in question have tried to kill him. Senku sees Homura as a soldier who is merely following the orders given by her leader, but he also sees the Homura as a lonesome girl sitting by herself on trees day and night.
As usual, Senku hides his kindness and care by showing an evil ulterior motive, such as turning Homura to their side using the cotton candy, but Ruri points out that this is a facade. Similarly to Gen, a person with such an ego is unable to seem as if he is doing something good out of the kindness of his heart.
[Stove Acquired!]
Tumblr media
As winter approaches, the elders in the village are worried about losing people to the cold. Senku hears about this and creates a stove which has a multi-purpose of cooking and also radiating heat for the people to stave off the coldness of winter. And speaking of winter...
[Christmas Acquired!]
Tumblr media
Senku hangs up lights in the tree for the "light bulb test" on a random night. Except the date isn't random at all and he drops enough hints for Gen to catch on that it is the night of Christmas. The significance of the day is only appreciated by Gen and himself, as they are the only modern timers in the village. It is for the sake of nostalgia, but Senku would rather be caught dead than admit that he is a sentimental guy with such irrational feelings.
And well, it all comes back to that scene with Byakuya, doesn't it? If you recall, Byakuya calls himself "Santa" while giving the scientific presents to the young Senku. This indicates Senku received them during Christmas. Which means... Christmas is a sentimental day to Senku and his father. An anniversary of Senku receiving his Christmas presents from Byakuya, which led to his deeper dive into his science obsession. The beginning of it all, one would say.
And even though he's dead and buried, Byakuya never stops giving. He gives Senku the Ishigami village to provide Senku with allies. He gives Senku Lillian's music, because he believes in the light of music and understands the importance of media to society. He collects platinum till his last breath, because he believes that Senku will need it someday. Byakuya keeps on giving to Senku, because his love for his son is so huge and unconditional. And because he promised.
Tumblr media
Surely, there is no greater love in the manga than Byakuya's love for his son and Senku's love for his father. Byakuya could easily win ten billion best father awards... well, not like there's much competition for that in shounen mangas.
#wrote this at 7am and went back to sleep immediately#and now that im wide awake again and rereading it it isnt that bad so erm ok hit post!#anyways i just rly rly rly love senkus and byakuyas relationship ok#the times ive cried for dr stone? ALWAYS FOR THEM#byakuya collecting platinum moment and dying...#i have lots of thoughts abt senku and byakuya and senkus love for his dad#the way the manga ended... it rly shows how senku is still always thinking abt his dad first and foremost#the love of a parent and how their children will always be just a little kid to them...#lots of ellipsis in these tags lmao#theres actually even more moments of senku giving stuff to others ofc#like giving tsukasa literal LIFE and the camera to minami yada yada#but yea i think these points r enough to show that senku rly invents things for ppl to show affection#like sure he enjoys creating science shit#but he also cares abt them and it's why he does it#i would say that gift giving is his love language or whatever#but ive heard that that love language stuff is bs so idk anymore#ask gen abt mentalism lore not me#wait no even if it was bs gen would not care and would have it in his psychology book#it's senku who would get triggered methinks#anyways lets just assume it's not bs and well#theres that thing where u make another person feel appreciated not based on ur own love language but based on THEIR love language#so like for example to make senku feel loved u should give him presents#and so far i think ive noticed three ppl doing this...? byakuya yuzuriha and gen#maybe theres more but i cant think of anyone else now#well might make another post in the future on this idk. or ill just reblog this one to continue#senku ishigami#byakuya ishigami#dr stone#dcst#long post

i hardly ever mention Glad for some reason. you. you know the one. the cousin. the mouthless one. bellona’s cousin that I have probably only mentioned once but she does actually do stuff in the plot. yknow. i only have concept sketches of her but uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Tumblr media
#pdbc#yeagh this is not good quality but whatever hashtag yolo#isnea. have I mentioned isnea by name. it’s the previously unnamed desert region that bellonas from#I only have that very poor visual representation of it but it is basically encased in a giant stone slab. only a small opening at the top#so you’d better have aircraft or something cause otherwise you’re trapped there#i love isnea…..everyone there lives under a rock literally and figuratively#I should make a longer post about it sometime. it doesn’t have much lore tbh but I like desert environments#glad my beloved I need to talk more about her she’s awesome. at least I think so#actually I just need to talk about Bellona’s family more in general. she does in fact have one and it’s one of the few somewhat stable ones#glad is her cousin obviously but she also has an older brother who’s older by like. a lot. like 20 years#so she doesn’t really know him at all and he doesn’t know her. alas. he’s tried to reach out but how do you even start that conversation#especially after she went through The Horrors#like heyyyyyyy sis I know u just almost died in a fire and I was never really told until now but wanna go have lunch or something#but her brother has a granddaughter who is Minerva. who is domitone’s friend also also one of the people tryna kill finch#hatred for the gourd father runs in the family 🥰🥰#and Minerva has a second cousin named din. and din. heh. well. he just kinda doesn’t do anything#glad kinda goes through the horrors too tbh she was chillin for the first like 55 years of her life#but then Whoops looks like bellona died and nobody really told her until Minerva brought it up in passing#and she’s also stuck with a haunted key. did I ever mention the haunted key.#probably not! but Glad is stuck with a haunted key and she HATES IT SO SO MUCH#ALSO 🫵🫵🫵BECAUSE SHE HAS NO MOUTH SHE COMMUNICATES VIA SIGN LANGUAGE#traditional isnean sign language to be more specific. ISL tends to come across as rather blunt and doesn’t have much nuance to it—#—which is why bellona comes across as rude most of the time. aside from the fact she is just plain rude#like wdym I shouldn’t tell people to go away right now or else. that’s what my cousin always said when she needed space.#please please please on my hands and knees begging can we have some underweight characters who actually have the effects of being so#i will have to do it myself I fear. here you go Glad have some severe weakness and all that funny stuff. good luck carrying heavy objects#(IM NOT MAKING FUN OF UNDERWEIGHT PPL SHUISUHUHIS I’M UNDERWEIGHT MYSELF I’M SICK OF IT BEING SEEN AS ATTRACTIVE)#also glad likes to blow stuff up. she really shouldn’t bc she’s already partially deaf but oooo funny explosions I should go near it#no little isnean girl don’t do that without ear protection!!!#i could ramble about all this for hours oooughggj I’ll spare you and just shut up now

Hi folks! It seems like people are discovering that there are people online who write some WEIRD! 👎 stuff for Nevermoor. Some tips and tricks for dealing with that:
Don't engage. Don't read the fics. Don't even comment to say how much you hate it.
Don't spread it around. It's gross as hell, I know! But being like "ew, guys, I found this gross fic" just means you're causing more people to seek out said gross fic, and that's just not great. If you don't want to see it, no one else wants to either.
If you can: block, mute, or filter. I don't really use any fanfic sites to know if these functionalities exist, but I'm sure people online have found ways. Edit: here's a way to do it on Ao3.
TL;DR: Ignore, Ignore, Ignore. 👍
(PS: Same thing goes for when people send weird inappropriate anon messages. Just delete them from your inbox and don't subject others to them.)
This is unfortunately something that's been present for years in the fandom, on both Ao3 and Wattpad. This is also why I essentially don't read Nevermoor fics unless they're for Mogtober, and even then I'm cautious. I have seen some weird stuff written about my favorite characters that I wish I could pluck from my brain and set on fire, or worse! But when I stumble across that stuff, I just quickly close the tab and pivot to something else to get my mind off of it.
We should not entertain these types of people in a fandom full of minors about a middle grade series, so: just don't engage with them, ignore them, filter them out, and maybe even drown them out with some fics of your own.

low/no empathy is Minorly Othering in terms of interests (in my experience) because almost everyone i know prefers fiction over nonfiction, because it's more interesting and easier to digest,
but prefer the opposite for the same reasons. nonfiction is MUCH easier for me to parse through. i stress myself out a lot whenever i try to imagine a characters thoughts and feelings, and i end up usually just misunderstanding entirely. oftentimes it's so frustrating i just put a book down and never try reading it again. i understand rhetorical devices, messages, themes, symbolism,,, i understand the book on a technical level when it comes to the artistry of how it's written. but i, for the life of me, in the moment, simply cannot fathom a character's thoughts and feelings
comics are only a little easier bcs they have added help of drawn depictions of thoughts and feeling, but even then it can still be hard. i just can't enjoy the same literature many ppl are into just cus i find textbooks n stuff more easy to read

I was thinking about the language differences because usually in Spanish I say Daring "mi queridísimo" for fun and Darling is "mi queridísima" and then their names because like I said I think it's funny. I usually say it in conversations with my cousin what we are talking about and I mention one of the two with "Mi queridísimo Daring (sometimes I even add the last name like Mi queridísimo Daring Charming) or Mi queridísima Darling" but I feel like it doesn't have the same spark in English.
Why? Because it would translate to "My dearest" and the word "queridísimo" has 11 letters but the word "dearest" only has 7 letters it's shorter!! And the funny thing about the word "queridísimo" is that it's a long one and it takes you a little longer than normal to say it.
Why am I making this post? I was just thinking about it as a word that I really like in Spanish and it's even hilariously long with 11 letters, if you convert it to English, it becomes a 7-letter word only.
And that "dearest" would be kind of a unisex word and "queridísimo" isn't because for male is well "queridísimo" and for female is "queridísima" because you couldn't say "mi queridísimo silla" (silla means chair) or "mi queridísima vestido" (vestido means dress) and what I just said is incorrect because chair is a feminine word and dress is a masculine word. "La silla y el vestido" Many words are gendered, I think there are few that are like unisex. Like the word "grupo" it's "group" "el grupo" It sounds masculine and it is but there is no word "Grupa" so Grupo covers everyone.
Because there are words that can be feminine or masculine like "bello or bella, guapo and guapa" (beautiful, and handsome and pretty? or maybe beautiful again idk)
Okay yes the Spanish is complicated but it's really funny with words I can't translate to English but they're words in English that maybe I can't translate to Spanish so it's okay, every language has its things.

Are you still interested in Merlin? I watched it when I was first airing and I only JUST found your blog... I agree with very nearly EVERYTHING. Arthur had so much potential, I agree with what yu think about Gaius and Kilgarrah Morgana and every other amazing promise of development that we were not given.
I’m still very fond of the show and characters! It was a huge part of my life for a very long time, frustrations and criticisms and all, haha. I still follow Merlin-centric blogs and reblog things occasionally, but I think I’ve said all I have to say about it—I stand by most of the opinions I’ve shared here, though overall my thoughts have mellowed out over time. I would probably phrase things differently (less intensely?) if I were writing them up nowadays.
It’s really cool (and a little scary at times) that new people continue to come across my many long-winded ramblings and connect with them, even though I’m not an active part of the fandom anymore.

when the apollo trilogy comes out i’m so irrationally excited to finally play dual destinies and spirit of justice in french, you have no idea. no because the french translations (unlike other european languages) fully localised the first four games to the same degree as the english did, so they take place in france, the characters have names that are french puns, it’s more culturally french, etc. the translators went in HARD with it and it’s fascinating. i need to know what they’ll do with athena. like does she randomly talk in english sometimes instead? does she still mix in languages like spanish and german? what about simon, since the english localisation made him speak in british english to reflect his “samurai-speak” in the original japanese -- what will they do in french? is he going to have a different name, since some prosecutors (like edgeworth and klavier) do? what will nahyuta’s “what’s crack-a-lackin’ homie” line be? will athena and simon go from using the formal “vous” to the informal “tu” once their past history has been revealed? will that happen with apollo and nahyuta too? how is that “je suis l’belle” perfume (or whatever tf it was called) going to be translated, are they going to make him italian instead like they did with the jean armstrong guy back in aa3? is the rakugo case going to feel even more unfitting when it takes place in paris? seriously the french localisation is always wild and fascinating and i’m obsessed with it and i cannot WAIT to see more of it

I am building so many hcs for Moon in my mind I love her so much enough so to think abt ancient politics girlie better consider herself lucky (I say, as if fictional politics becoming to long dead societies isn't my favorite shit to explore)
#rat rambles#rain posting#anyways I like the idea that moon was first built during a time when the original nation that lived in the area had been split into two#she was built near one of the borders in a location that many of the organizations that had been carrying out iterator constructions at the#time had been eyeing for a while but avoiding because of the high tensions between the two nations and how itd be hard to not use resources#from across the border from either side to keep her operational#eventually though one of them was given the thumbs up and started construction leading to a lot of conflict#for a long time it was mostly just diplomatic arguments through messages and meetings but eventually as moon neared completion the topic#of which nation she should be considered to belong to became a major point of contension and there was a minor war over it#eventually the nation that had initially backed her construction gave up due to some natural distaters#so by the time moon was activated she was considered an iterator of the other nation and as such she had quite a bit of adapting to do as#while she had both of the primary languages of the nations in her database pretty much all of her database and internal functions were#written by and with the laguage of the initial nation that backed her construction#eventually this stopped mattering as the two nations ended up merging and the newly founded government remerged the two languages#I say remerged as they were initially different branches of the primary laguage of the initial nation that had falled apart#although moon found it nice to be able to use many of the words she wasnt allowed to use before it was annoying to have to once again#adjust to speaking a different language primarily#although she definitely did find it funny watching the others struggle to use the new language organically as she had a head start in#understanding how a lot of the 'new' stuff was actually used in practical conversation as opposed to straight translation#many iterators that were around during the two nation era will still usually exclusively think in their local language and occasionally#speak in it fully in more casual settings if they get that luxury#now ofc language evolves over time so all iterators have had to adjust how they speak but generally speaking they still are most#comfortable with their original language as its what they were built to speak

DCxDP Fanfic idea: The Cousin
Clark had always known that Krypton was an entire planet with more than just a few cities scattered about, but it was a very distant knowledge that he grew up with.
Yes, it was sad that he was among the few Kyptonians left in the universe, but Clark has always considered himself human before anything else. He was Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent's son long before he learned of his identity as Kal-El.
It made him feel guilty that he preferred being Clark Kent to Kal-El, but it was the honest truth, as mean as it was.
Kara had once accused him of not understanding what it mean to have lost their home planet like she did. She often pointed out that his Kryptonese sounded like someone who had learned it as a second language. She also claimed that he was only pretending to be Kryptonian in another argument, and the worst was when she stated he wasn't Kryptonian enough. She raged because she was mourning the loss of her planet and people, and lashing out at him was easier.
He knew that, but it still stung, though not in the way she wanted. It stung because of the guilt: He agreed that he was prouder to be considered an Earthling than a Kryptonian.
He couldn't help that English rested more comfortably on his tongue or the scents of Earth's food were far more appetizing than the meals Kara made (As close to her family's recipes as she could. There were some spices Earth similarly couldn't substitute)
His rocket ship was his parents' attempt to stuff as much of their culture as they could into it before their people were wiped out. He tried hard to learn everything they managed to save, but he didn't connect to it as strongly as he did in history class listening to the USA's humble beginnings.
He felt guilty about that, too.
When they found Kon-El, he let Kara give him a name, only to later discover what Kon in Kryptonian meant. By that point, the clone had built an entire identity out of the name, and seeing his cousin's smug smirk made his insides turn.
He didn't like the clone, but he didn't think the boy deserved that. Though Clark should have done something, eventually, he would help rebrand the name, shifting the translation of the more modern (or it was before Kypton was no more) to an older Kryptonian one. Although Kara acted like he was destroying more of their culture, Clark felt it was better this way.
It was a struggle to be trapped between two worlds, but Clark knew which one he would choose every single time.
Then Bruce found the boy.
As usual, Bruce kept an eye on all major powers, including up-and-coming heroes. He first gained wind of the young hero in Amity Park from a young Wes Weston, who posted daily about Phantom. Since Phantom seemed to fall under the jurisdiction of the Justice League Dark, Clark didn't pay much attention to him.
Bruce had eyes on the young hero and had sent Robin to offer training and support, but the boy seemed much more interested in staying in his own part of the world and fighting the dead. Clark could respect that.
All heroes had an area that was undoubtedly theirs, and Phantom picked the most haunted place in the country to protect. It made sense. Months went by with Bruce occasionally bringing up the boy in meetings, to either update them on his work or praise the child for his missions in that weird, emotionless way Bruce talked as Batman.
Then, one day, Kara barged into the meeting, about to argue for her right to join the Justice League, when her eyes landed on the hologram of Phantom, which was frozen in place. Her mouth opened and closed, eyes wide, before she blurted out, "You found someone from the house of Lor-Van!?"
"What?" Clark sat up, recognizing his mother's maiden name.
"Look at his chest! That's the Lor-Van symbol!" Kara screeched, hope starting to bloom in her eyes. "He's your cousin, Kal. Likely from your mother's young brother! I heard he was attempting to make a rocket on the other side of Kypton, but I never knew if he was successful....but he must have! He has your mother's eyes!"
Clark feels like someone kicked him in the chest. His voice cracks as he asks, "There were other refugees from Kypton?"
Whatever glee was on Kara's face died a painful death as she turned away, hiding her tears. "Not everyone believed Uncle Jor, but not everyone thinks he was lying. They just didn't make it."
The silence in the meeting hall is heavy. Clark is only half aware of his teammates shooting unsure glances between the two aliens until Bruce clears his throat. "If Phantom is truly of house Lor-Van, I think it's time to approach him again, especially since he's a ghost. Anyone with magic can take control of him."
"Oh," Kara's voice is small. "He didn't make it either."
Clark leaps to drag Kara into a hug. She goes willingly, but doesn't hug back as she stays stiff as a board, hiding her face in his chest. "He should have been your age. Makes sense why he's still a teenager."
He doesn't know what to say to make her feel better. Nothing will feel better when you lose your entire world.
"We could go meet him, " he offers instead. Clark feels Kara move her head against his chest in one brisk nod, but it's enough for him to excuse himself from the rest of the League. They wave away his apology, offering to come with them for moral support, but Clark feels it's something he and Kara should be able to handle on their own.
She's crying on her way back to Earth, aiming for the part of the planet that houses Amity Park. Clark could have just had the Zeta beams from the Watch Tower, but he felt a flight would have done her some good.
"I don't know why I'm sad," She laughs wetly. "It's not like he's my cousin. He's a cousin of a cousin. I just thought...."
"I know," he tells her, pretending not to see the flooding tears behind her. Maybe we can find out what happened to him."
Maybe he was raised on Earth before his early death. Maybe Phantom is like me. Clark says, but he hopes. Even if it were a ghost, it would be nice to have someone understand.
The two Supers don't say anything else as they re-enter Earth's skies, and they can spot a ain't green glowing monster fighting against another smaller white glowing figure on the horizon.
