"The amygdala (/əˈmɪɡdələ/; PL: amygdalae /əˈmɪɡdəli, -laɪ/ or amygdalas; also corpus amygdaloideum; Latin from Greek, ἀμυγδαή, amygdalē, 'almond', 'tonsil'[1]) is one of two almond-shaped clusters of nuclei located deep and medially within the temporal lobes of the brain's cerebrum in complex vertebrates, including humans.[2] Shown to perform a primary role in the processing of memory, decision making, and emotional responses (including fear, anxiety, and aggression), the amygdalae are considered part of the limbic system.[3] The term "amygdala" was first introduced by Karl Friedrich Burdach in 1822.[4]" - wikipedia

I'm still having trouble with my Wi-Fi at home. I'll contact the company before I leave to work this morning.
For now, activity on the blogs I'm responsible for (the pups', Ryder's and Liberty's) will be totally on hold. I'll keep showing up here occasionally to chat and check how things are going but I'll keep their askboxes closed until this mess gets fixed.

Sorry for not streaming the flash comms yet! I had trouble finding the model of router I wanted so I wasn't able to stream today :( The one they had here were of diff. model so I had to buy a test sim for now to gauge the signal in our area. If it turns out to be good, I'll go ahead & buy the router tomorrow!

turns out that there is an update. I didn't see anything about fixing this specific problem, but then, maybe I didn't recognize it. or again, it could be a computer limitation, especially with firefox open (but I can't really work without distractions, strangely enough... I need some form of a break every now and then or I can't focus on what I'm doing). oh to have a house with wiring that isn't shit, and to be able to afford to update to a machine that is as powerful as I need it to be...

Does anyone have any recommendations for a wireless router that is solid and affordable? Both of the linksys ones we have are making Internet so much more difficult for everyone in this house.
Affordable, in this case, means, "I can buy this with DoorDash money." So...
$50 or under, if possible?

Tumblr media
The sun had set by the time they reached the base. Steve slowed the truck, putting it in park and stopping in front of the gate. Natasha held her phone out in front of her, jumping out of the truck.
“Is this it?”
Nat nodded. “The file came from these coordinates.”
“So did I,” Steve muttered, raising his shield and breaking the lock holding the gate together. He led the way, Y/N and Nat following closely behind him. “This camp is where I was trained.”
Nat was still holding her phone up, waiting for the beeping to intensify, signaling their arrival. Y/N just walked along, observing Steve with a newfound interest. He talked about his past often, but this was a side he had forgotten to mention.
“Change much?”
“A little.” His voice was quiet, looking at the light pole in front of him like it was a distant memory. She was certain it was.
Looking over at her friend, she whispered quietly, trying to ensure Steve couldn’t hear her. “I’m worried about him.”
Nat raised an eyebrow. “It’s an odd feeling, returning to the place you were trained.” Her voice held a certain understanding to it. “He’ll be fine.”
“I know. He just…” She looked over her shoulder, frowning as his face contorted with nostalgia. “Never mind.”
“Well, this is a dead end.” Nat had finally given up, lowering her phone. “Zero heat signatures, zero waves, not even radio. Whoever wrote the file must have used a router to throw people off.” Steve stared at the munitions building that stood in the center of the base. Nat cocked her head. “What is it?”
“Army regulations forbid storing munitions within 500 yards of the barracks.” She laughed to herself, shaking her head. Of course, he still remembered everything he’d been taught. “This building is in the wrong place.”
Tumblr media
“Wow,” Y/N whispered as Steve turned on the lights. “This is ancient.”
Steve glared playfully. “This is S.H.I.E.L.D.”
None of the desks had been used in years, and the entirety of the underground fortress was heavily abandoned. At the end of the room, another door met them, three portraits on the wall. “There’s Stark’s father.”
Steve nodded. “Howard.”
“Who’s the girl?” Nat asked.
Ah. Y/N’s eyes drifted to the floor, Steve’s gaze fixed on her. The girl, Peggy, had been the whole reason for her frankly stupid bout of jealousy. And it couldn’t be addressed yet, not until everything was put back.
Not until they finished the mission.
No distractions.
Tumblr media
The elevator had taken them even deeper into the secret facility. When the doors opened, and they were met with pitch black, Steve’s arm instinctively reached out, pushing Y/N behind him. If she’d been feeling bold, she would have teased him, but the eerie feeling that crept down her spine rendered her speechless.
The whole room, they realized, was one computer that looked like it was from the 70’s. Nat plugged in the flash drive, and the system rebooted before their eyes.
The computer’s jumbled electronic voice spoke: Initiate system?
Nat stepped forward, plucking out the word on the keyboard in front of her. “Y, e, s.”
The computer’s hum grew louder, no doubt due to its lack of use over the years. Nat wiggled her eyebrows, speaking in possibly the creepiest voice Y/N had ever heard. “Shall we play a game?”
Steve simply stared, and Y/N stifled a laugh when the super-spy turned around, explaining. “It’s from a movie that was really pop-”
“I know.” Steve cut her off, a hint of humor in his voice. “I saw it.”
Y/N laughed. “You did?” He nodded, smiling ever so slightly. “I thought you hated scary movies.” She teased, nudging his arm with her elbow.
His eyes were heavy, full of yearning, desperate to reach and hold her, to protect her. “I do. It was a suggestion from a… friend.”
The suggestion, she knew, had been from her. It’d been one of the many nights she’d made dinner for them, talking about her childhood and all the movies and culture she’d seen. He never interrupted, just nodded and smiled as she passionately told him about her life. “Do you like horror movies?”
He tilted his head, that lazy smile he always wore gracing his face. “Like Dracula?”
“Sort of.” She laughed to herself. “Believe it or not, movies have evolved since then.”
“Ha ha.” He glared. “You’re hilarious.”
“I’m just saying.” Looking back at their dinner, she continued. “So, do you?”
“Do I what?”
“Like them? Horror movies, that is.”
“No.” He shook his head. “I was shaking the whole time, Buck couldn’t stop laughing.”
She threw her head back, giggling. “That movie isn’t even scary, Steve!”
“Yes, it is!”
“If you think that’s scary…” She laughed as she spoke. “Then you should watch modern horror movies.”
“Yeah?” He leaned forward, gaze fixed on her. “Have any recommendations?”
“Saw, for one. Oh! Scream, Jigsaw, and I Know What You Did Last Summer. All amazing.”
“Alright.” He pulled out his notebook, writing them down quickly. “I’ll try my best to get through these.”
She shook her head, the memory falling to the back of her mind as she focused on the computer’s screen. It had begun to morph into a face formed from green binary numbers. “Rogers, Steven. Born 1918.” The camera above the screen turned to Nat. “Romanoff, Natalia Alianovna, born 1984.” It settled on Y/N last, taking a moment before speaking. “Y/L/N, Y/N, born 1986.”
“It’s a recording, I think.” Nat tilted her head curiously.
“I am not a recording, Fraeulein. I may not be the man I was when the Captain took me prisoner in 1945, but I am.”
“You know this thing?” Y/N muttered, looking up at Steve.
He nodded, surveying the room, no doubt trying to figure out a way to disarm the system. “Arnim Zola was a German scientist who worked for the Red Skull. He’s been dead for years.”
“First correction, I am Swiss. Second, look around you. I have never been more alive. In 1972, I received a terminal diagnosis. Science could not save me, but my mind…” He trailed off. “That was worth saving. You are standing in my brain.”
 “How did you get here?”
“Invited.”
She fought the urge to groan. “Of course he was. Operation Paperclip after World War II. They recruited Nazi scientists with strategic value.”
“They thought I could help their cause. I also helped my own.”
“HYDRA died with the Red Skull.”
“Cut off one head, two more shall take its place. HYDRA was founded on the belief that humanity could not be trusted with its own freedom. What we did not realize was that if you try to take that freedom, they resist.” A montage of Steve during the war played on the screen. “After the war, S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded, and I was recruited. The new HYDRA grew, a parasite inside S.H.I.E.L.D. for 70 years. We have been creating crisis, seeking war. When history did not cooperate, history was changed.”
The montage of Steve was quickly replaced by photos of HYRDA’s assassinations, Howard Stark, and Fury, among them. “Hydra created a world so chaotic that humanity is finally ready to sacrifice its freedom to gain its security. Once the purification process is complete, HYDRA’s new world order will rise. We won, Captain. Your death amounts to the same as your life.” Y/N stepped closer to Steve, watching as his face hardened with each word. “A zero sum.”
He raised his fist, slamming it into the screen. The computer beside it lit up, Zola continuing on his rant. “As I was saying…”
“What’s on this drive?” Steve interrogated.
“Project Insight requires insight. So I wrote an algorithm.”
“What kind of algorithm? What does it do?”
“The answer to your question is fascinating. Unfortunately, you shall be too dead to hear it.” The doors began to close, Steve’s shield doing little to stop it.
“We got a bogey. Short-range ballistic, 30 seconds tops.”
“Who fired it?”
“S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“I’m afraid I have been stalling, Captain. Admit it. It’s better this way. We are both of us, out of time.”
Squeezing her eyes shut, she focused on the pair in front of her, placing a force shield around them. “Y/N!” Her eyes peeled open, Steve staring at her with horror in his eyes as the room became engulfed in flames.
Tumblr media
She could hear his heart beating. That was what woke her up, the alarmingly fast heart rate of the blonde super soldier supporting her weight. She groaned, her voice hoarse as she spoke. “Steve…”
“Shh.” He whispered, his arm tight around her waist. Her head lolled to the side, falling away from his chest. Maybe that would help. “Save your energy.”
“Where are we?” A sharp pain rang through her head. So much for that idea. “My head feels like it’s on fire.”
He hummed, knocking on the door again with a newfound urgency. “That tends to happen when you get practically crushed by rubble.”
Before she could even begin to respond, her eyes fluttered shut. The next thing she knew, she was inside, lying on a stranger's bed. Steve sat beside her, washing the numerous wounds she’d gained from the explosion. “Steve?”
He smiled, not bothering to look up from her gash. “You're awake.”
“Yeah.” She sat up, much to the super soldier’s annoyance. “Jesus, how long was I out?”
“Not long.” He murmured. “You have a lot of cuts; hold still.”
“Well…” She fought the urge to glare. “Makes sense.”
“Yeah.” He looked pissed, fed up with her. It made her heart twist. “Why’d you do it?”
“Do what?” She stared at her hands, the chipped nail polish on them suddenly much more interesting.
He sat back in his chair, obviously feeling confrontational. She would have rather he finish tending to her, his light touches much preferred to his angry eyes. “You had time to make it to me, and you stayed up there, placing yourself in immediate danger.”
“We were all in immediate danger, Steven.” She murmured. “What would you have me do? Make sure you and Nat were safe, or jump down ther-”
“Whatever choice keeps you safe.” He cut her off. “You didn’t have to-”
“Yes, I did!” She yelled. “I can’t summon a protective force shield and protect myself at the same time. You two were more important.”
“No!” He shook his head. “No, I could have-”
“Your shield is big enough to cover you - mine barely covered you and Nat.” She argued. “I’m not strong enough to summon one big enough to fit all three of us yet. I was doing you two a favor. You're welcome.”
“You're too reckless.”
“I’m too reckless?” She scoffed. “Remind me - which one of us jumped out of a plane without a parachute?”
“That’s different-”
“Is it?” She raised an eyebrow. “Next time you want to lecture me on safety, save it.”
“Can you-” A hand ran through his hair, voice tight. “Can you let me worry about you?” He glared. “At the end of the day, I’ll be fine. You’re different.”
“Different?” She rolled her eyes. “How?”
“You know how.”
She shook her head, crossing her arms, ignoring the sting from her ribs, no doubt broken from the impact. “Enlighten me.”
“You don’t have the serum-”
“Really? That’s what you’re going with? I’m an enhanced individual, Steven. Try again.” She stood up, ignoring his worried look and the sting that still rang from her ribs. “That’s the only reason?”
“What do you want me to say?” He followed after her, hands itching to reach out and hold her. “You won’t speak to me about whatever it is that I did.”
“I want to!” She yelled. “I want to, but now’s not really a good time.”
“There never will be, not with our lives.” He crossed his arms. “But I can’t keep ignoring it. I thought we-” He frowned. “I thought we’d finally-”
Nat’s head peeked through the door, breaking the moment between the two. She smiled guiltily, stepping in. “Am I-”
“Not at all.” Y/N smiled, walking into the bathroom. “Have fun, he’s a real treat this early in the morning.”
Tumblr media
“Tell me about Zola’s algorithm.” Nat kicked Sitwell across the roof, smirking as he yelped in pain.
“Never heard of it.”
“Liar.” Y/N hissed, her hands glowing. Sitwell’s eyes widened.
“What were you doing on the Lemurian Star?”
“I was throwing up, I get seasick.”
“Not what he asked.”
Sitwell fell backwards, and Steve caught him before he could fall off. “Is this little display meant to insinuate that you’re going to throw me off the roof? Because it’s really not your style, Rogers.”
“You’re right.” Steve let go of the agent, stepping back. “It’s hers.”
Nat raised her leg, kicking him over the side. Y/N sighed, watching as he screamed for help. “I wanted to scare him a little more.”
Steve raised an eyebrow. “Kicking him off a roof wasn’t enough?”
“Not really.”
Sam flew over them, dropping Sitwell back on the roof. Before they could even speak, Sitwell began to squeal out HYDRA’s secrets. “Zola’s algorithm is a program for choosing Insight’s targets.”
“What targets?”
“You! A TV anchor in Cairo, the Under Secretary of Defense, a high school valedictorian in Iowa City, Bruce Banner, Stephen Strange, anyone who’s a threat to HYRDA.”
Y/N leaned over, whispering in Nat’s ear. “Kind of offended we aren’t on that list.”
“Now or in the future.”
“In the future. How could it know?”
“How could it not? Zola’s algorithm evaluates people’s past to predict their future.”
“And what then?”
“Pierce is gonna kill me.”
Y/N stepped forward. “I honestly do not care if you live or die, so you better start talking.”
Tumblr media
“What just happened?” She groaned, her head running a million miles a minute. “I feel like I have emotional whiplash. Maybe real whiplash-”
“It was him.” Steve’s voice was low, staring at the ground as he spoke. “He looked right at me like he didn’t even know me.”
“How is that possible it was like seventy years ago?”
“Zola. Bucky’s whole unit was captured in ‘43. Zola experimented on him. Whatever he did helped Bucky survive the fall. They must have found him and-”
“None of that’s your fault, Steve.”
“Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky.”
“We need to get a doctor here.” Y/N’e heart broke, panic running through her as she watched Natasha’s head droop. “If we don’t put pressure on that wound, she’s gonna bleed out here in the truck.” The guard pointed their taser wand at Sam, before promptly knocking out their fellow guard.
“What-” She grinned as Maria pulled the helmet off.
“That thing was squeezing my brain. Who is this guy?”
“Sam, Maria. Maria, Sam.” Y/N smiled, holding out her bound hands. “Please, get these off of us.”
Maria laughed, unlocking the cuffs. “Nice to see you as well, Agent.”
“Technically,” She sighed in relief when the cuffs fell to the ground. “I don’t work for you anymore.”
Tumblr media
“Lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, and one hell of a headache.”
“Don’t forget your collapsed lung.”
“Let’s not forget that. Otherwise, I’m good.”
“I’m sorry.” Y/N stepped forward, arms crossed. “How the hell are you alive?”
“They cut you open. Your heart stopped.”
“Tetrodotoxin B. Slows the pulse to one beat a minute. Banner developed it for stress. Didn’t work so great for him, but we found a use for it.”
“Why all the secrecy? Why not just tell us?”
“Any attempt on the director’s life had to look successful.”
“Can’t kill you if you’re already dead. Besides, I wasn’t sure who to trust.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Now that we have that out of the way, I would love to know what exactly is going on.”
Fury laughed, rolling out of the hospital bed. “Straight to the point.” Leading them to the next room over, Maria handed out mission files as Fury spoke. “Pierce declined the Nobel Peace Prize. He said peace wasn’t an achievement, it was a responsibility. It’s stuff like this that gives me trust issues.”
“We have to stop the launch.”
“I don’t think the Council is accepting my calls anymore.” He opened the briefcase in front of him.
“What’s that?”
“Once the helicarriers reach three thousand feet, they’ll triangulate with the Insight satellites, becoming fully weaponized. We need to breach those carriers and replace their targeting blades with our own.”
“One or two won’t cut it; we need to link all three carriers for this to work, because if even one ship remains operational, a whole lot of people are going to die.”
“We have to assume everyone aboard those carriers is HYDRA. We have to get past them and insert the server blades. Then maybe, just maybe, we can salvage what’s left-”
“We’re not salvaging anything.” Steve cut in. “We’re not just taking down the carriers, Nick. We’re taking down S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“S.H.I.E.L.D had nothing to do with this.”
“You gave us this mission. This is how it ends. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s been compromised, you said so yourself. HYDRA grew right under your nose and nobody noticed.”
“Why do you think we’re meeting in this cave?” Fury scoffed. “I noticed.”
“A little too late, it would seem. We don’t even know how many people paid the price because of this oversight.” Y/N raised an eyebrow. “Steve’s right. You asked us to complete this mission, and we will, our way.”
Tumblr media
Steve was staring into the distance, eyes far away as if he was reliving a memory. She couldn’t blame him, seeing her best friend still alive after almost seventy years would shock her, too. He’d told her the stories of him and Bucky, most of them about the two getting into trouble. Throughout them all, one thing was clear: Bucky always had Steve’s back, always.
And Steve had Bucky’s.
“Steve.” Y/N whispered. “Are you-”
“I’m fine.” He nodded, staring out over the dam. “It’s a lot.”
“I’m sure.” She stood beside him. “We’ll fix this. You know that, right?”
“I don’t know if there’s a way.”
Y/N gasped, clutching a hand to her chest. “The Steve Rogers, giving up?” She shook her head, laughing. “That’s not the man I lo- I mean... that’s not the man I’ve come to know.”
“Yeah, yeah.” He glared. “Thank you.”
“For what?” She smiled. “I haven’t done anything.”
“You ground me.” He smiled back, reaching out to hold her hand. “Even if you don’t mean to.”
“There’s no need to thank me.” She leaned her head on his arm, squeezing his hand. “I’d do it for you a million times over.”
"After this is all over..." He whispered. "We're talking about this. About us."
Y/N nodded, her stomach fluttering. "Of course."
"Meet me in front of the Lincoln Memorial."
She laughed. "Why there?"
"Don't think I haven't noticed you." He smirked. "Sitting there watching me run."
Y/N smacked his arm playfully. "I don't know what you're talking about!"
He laughed. "Sure you don't."
Tumblr media
“Attention, all S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, this is Steve Rogers. You’ve heard a lot about me over the past few days. Some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it’s time you know the truth.” S.H.I.E.L.D. is not what we thought it was. It’s been taken over by HYRDA. Alexander Pierce is their leader. The S.T.R.I.K.E. and Insight crew are HYRDA as well. I don’t know how many more, but I know they’re in the building. They could be standing right next to you. They almost have what they want. Absolute control. They shot Nick Fury, and it won’t end there. If you launch those Helicarriers today, HYRDA will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way. Unless we stop them. I know I’m asking a lot, But the price of freedom is high. It always has been. And it’s a price I’m willing to pay. And if I’m the only one, then so be it. But I’m willing to bet I’m not.”
“Did you write that down first, or was it off the top of your head?” Sam laughed.
Y/N shook her head, staring at the super solider with adoration in her eyes. “He does this horrible thing called inspiring others.” She smiled, not a trace of disgust found on her face. “It makes me sick, to be honest with you Sam.”
Tumblr media
“Hey, Cap. How do we know the good guys from the bad guys?”
“If they’re shooting at you, they’re bad.”
Y/N laughed, compelling her powers to fly down to the pad below. “Well said.”
He shrugged, running behind some cargo to shield himself from fire. “Am I wrong?”
Three HYDRA agents creeped up behind Steve, their guns aimed for his head. Y/N frowned, stepping in front of him as she blasted them across the yard. “That’s not fair sportsmanship, boys.”
Maria’s voice echoed over the comms. “Eight minutes Cap.”
“Working on it.”
“Terra, status?”
“Following behind, making sure he gets where he needs to go.” She kicked a HYRDA agent into a cement block, wiping the sweat off her brow. “This is doing wonders for my anger issues.”
Maria laughed. “You should try a rage room.”
Y/N smiled. “This is my rage room.” She followed after Steve, closing the door behind her. “In the first helicarrier.”
Tumblr media
“Steve…” Y/N whispered. “I think that’s him. He's waiting-”
“I know.” He nodded. “I need you to promise me something.”
“Anything.”
“If things go south, promise me you’ll leave.”
She scoffed, shaking her head. “Absolutely not. I’m staying with you.”
“Y/N-”
“I can’t believe you would ask me to do that.” She summoned two green orbs, watching the HYRDA assassin carefully. “No way, Steve.”
In a surge of adrenaline, Steve whipped around, his face as serious as it had ever been. “I love you.”
“I-” Her heart skipped, a soft smile gracing her lips. “I love you, too.”
He nodded, turning back toward the target. “Don't forget our date.”
“Trust me…” She made her magic pulse, trying to intimidate Bucky. “I won’t.”
“People are gonna die, Buck. I can’t let that happen. Please,” Steve practically begged. “Don’t make me do this.”
It seemed as if Bucky didn’t care, or ever register Steve’s pleas. He raised his gun, firing two warning shots towards the Avengers. Steve threw his shield, hitting Bucky in the torso before charging forward.
Y/N raced after him, focusing her magic on keeping Bucky at bay, pinning him to the ground. Steve whipped around, eyes wide. “What are you doing?”
“Go!” She yelled. “I can’t hold him forever.” Bucky struggled beneath your hold, writhing and thrashing. “Go!”
Steve had only lowered the SIM console when Bucky escaped, shooting Y/N in the leg. “Shit.” She fell to the ground, staring at the blood that pulsed from the wound.
Steve stepped in front of her, shielding her from Bucky’s ongoing assault. “Take my belt!”
“What?” Y/N’s cheeks felt hot. Whether it was from the bullet wound or Steve’s interesting request, she didn’t know. “What are you-”
“Take the belt.” He yelled, grunting as he fought against Bucky. “Take the belt, replace the sim card, and get out of here.”
Y/N surged forward, cutting the belt off his waist and pulling it to her. Grabbing the railing, she willed herself to stand, knuckles snow white as she hobbled over to the station.
She’d almost removed the old SIM card when a sharp stabbing pain rang through her side. “That can’t be good.”
Y/N didn’t even bother to look behind her, pulling the old SIM card out and replacing it with yours, hands shaking from the adrenaline coursing through your veins.
“Get out of here!”
Her vision was failing, the pain so intense that she could barely see two feet in front of her. “Not without you!”
“That’s-” Punch. “An-” Block. “Order.” Fire.
Her eyes welled with tears, all of this becoming too overwhelming. The pain, the helplessness, the worry, it had finally hit her. This couldn’t be the last time she saw Steve. “Steve, please…”
“I’m right behind you, I promise!”
Pulling the knife out of her back, she squeezed her eyes shut, summoning two more magic bursts. She threw herself through the gap her first burst had created, aiming the second at the glass below, its power turning the glass into dust.
As she fluttered through the air, free-falling toward the water below, all she could think of, all she could picture, was Steve’s perfect blue eyes.

“You know,” Y/N muttered, smiling as she watched the ducklings follow after their mother. “For an Avenger, you are horrible at sneaking up on people.”
“I wasn’t trying to sneak.” Steve clarified. “How long have you been here?”
“A couple of hours.” She sighed, staring at the landscape around her. “I thought you would be on your run. Got set up to watch and everything.”
He laughed, shaking his head. “Not even trying to hide it, are you?”
Y/N shrugged, facing the super soldier. “Well, after you told me you loved me minutes before the worst fight of our lives, I feel like this is pretty mild.”
He smiled, wrapping an arm around her waist. “If I remember correctly, you told me you loved me, too.”
“I’m sorry.” She whispered, tracing shapes on his chest. “We could have had so much more time if I had just- I knew she wasn’t a threat, I knew that it wasn’t like that anymore, and I still-”
“It’s alright.” He muttered, laying his forehead against yours. “It’s really alright.”
“I thought we were supposed to talk.” She raised an eyebrow.
“I got distracted.” His eyes trailed to her lips. “You were glowing in the sunlight.”
“Please.” She scoffed.
“I’m going to kiss you now.”
“Okay.” She whispered, wrapping her arms around his neck, smiling as he pulled her closer. “You kiss like they do in the movies.”
A horribly satisfied smirk graced his lips. “Is that a good thing or…”
“Shut up.” You jumped up, kissing him again. “It’s a very good thing.”

☕ Afternoon Experiment No. 34 or why you shouldn't mix Tim Drake, coffee and marijuana, EP: 1
[story collection] <-more stories here
next episode
Wayne Manor was a battlefield without explosions, without screams.
Worse.
It was coffee hour number thirty-four. Of the afternoon.
“Has anyone seen the new coffee machine?” Dick asked as he entered the kitchen.
“Tim integrated it into his backpack along with a solar panel and an IV drip,” Jason replied from the floor, surrounded by notes and Post-its. He was wearing sunglasses indoors. Not for fashion. Out of despair.
“Is he still awake?” Damian growled from atop the counter, where he was allegedly meditating but in reality was making sure Tim didn’t start levitating again.
Steph popped her head through the doorframe.
“Confirmed. He officially hit forty-five days without sleep. He wrote it in his ‘Perma-Hyperlucidity Journal’. Says he reached Level Eight of Multidimensional Awareness.”
Dick sighed.
We have to do something. Before he figures out how to time travel with liquid caffeine.
“Are you sure about this?” Dick asked, eyeing the tiny ziplock bag on the table.
“Got a better idea?” Jason raised an eyebrow. “We tried puzzles. We locked him in a room with no Wi-Fi. He blew it up. Literally. The room.”
Damian crossed his arms.
“I oppose this method. Not because I care about Drake, but because marijuana has proven effects on reflex deterioration. What if he gets even dumber? He’s already on the edge of functionality.”
“He’s not going to smoke it,” Steph clarified, arriving with a tray. “Brownies. Just a bit. A microdose. For a normal human.”
“What’s a microdose for someone who hasn’t slept in six weeks and whose blood is basically espresso?” Cass asked from the corner.
Silencio.
"Ups", dijo Steph.
Tim entered like a shadow with eyes opened too far.
“Hi guys! I hacked the NSA and found a mathematical pattern in how dust collects under the couch! I’m going to use it to prevent crime. Also wrote a novel about it. Painted the map.”
“Brownie, bro,” Jason offered, wearing the fakest smile in his arsenal.
Tim looked at it. Sniffed. Ate it.
Five minutes. Ten. Twenty.
“Is it supposed to—?” Damian began.
Then Tim slowly stood up. So slowly they thought he’d gone into hibernation mode.
“Guys... I think I’m seeing the flow of ideas. Like, literally. Threads. Cosmic threads.”
“Oh no,” Dick muttered.
“I’M INSIDE THE CODE!” Tim yelled, ripping off his shirt. “THE UNIVERSE IS A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE! AND I’M THE DEBUG!”
He jumped out the window.
They were on the third floor.
Nobody moved.
Jason turned to Steph.
“How much did you give him?”
“I... don’t know. I measured it with an ice cream scoop. It had little cartoon faces on it.”
Damian was already calling Alfred.
“We’ve got a ‘Red Dragon Protocol’. Repeat: Red Dragon. Tim’s merged with the metaverse. May now believe he’s a router.”
Cass sighed.
“Next time, we just tranq him.”
Dick nodded, watching Tim climb a tree, screaming at the wind that he was the cloud.
“Yeah. Definitely. Tranquilizer. Or we ship him to a Tibetan monastery. One with zero signal.”
