Jordan had been distracted since Maria and JoJo came to join his adventure. He had skipped more climbing sessions than he wanted to admit. But now that they were settled, it was time to pick up the slack. “Go climb, my love,” Maria told him. “You’re not quitting this thing on my behalf. Isn’t it the whole reason we’re here?”

Another bonus was the free family passes to the park, already bought and paid for as part of his climbing package.

“So you guys check out the park. Nessa will show you everything, and I’ll meet up with you later for dinner.”

Jordan was quite proud of the skewers he’d grilled for the group tonight. It was his turn to make dinner for climb club after hours.

So Maria met Nessa by the pool, and the kids enjoyed the warm, heated water. In November now, the dry northern desert took a sharp turn for winter. They didn’t stay in the water for long, especially in the late hours of evening when the heat of the day dispersed quickly. They were happy for as long as they were submerged, but quickly after, they had to get dressed and moving again to keep warm.

Maria took an instant liking to Nessa, a woman ten years her senior and so accomplished and cultured in life. Maria couldn’t help but feel a little star-struck, but Nessa was so welcoming and easy to talk to, and she never made Maria feel inferior for anything—not finishing college, not having a career, not living in a proper home with her daughter. In fact, she even took an interest in Maria’s hobbies and music, and it felt genuine, too.

Meanwhile, they were also pleasantly surprised at how well Johanna and the boys got along.

With the children playing nicely, they went to check in on the guys.

Jordan’s training had been fragmented by travel, but the last task on his to-do list was to attempt the medium wall. There were only three weeks left in this climbing session before they broke for winter. If he didn’t make this attempt now, he might as well start over from scratch in the spring. And that sounded demoralizing. So he gave it a shot.

It was challenging in the best way. Jordan was meticulous and careful, and he did great, surprising even himself!

He reveled in his success for a moment, then he started his equally meticulous descent.

That was where Maria found him, dangling from the highest point of the cliff face, one-handed, swinging his body from one handhold to another.

She heard her mother’s voice in her head, Oh, God, she’s going to be a widow again!

“I know, right?” Nessa said, “I think it’s better not to watch.”

When he reached the bottom, Maria didn’t have to explain what she was thinking. Her face said it all. Perhaps he should have gotten her used to the little wall first.

“Hey, I have an idea,” he said. “I want to show you something.”

“Is it up there?”

“It is, but we can take the stairs.”

Funny story about their sims, in gameplay, they can talk about almost anything and everything, but if he tries to talk to her about rock climbing, half the time she doesn’t like it and gives up negatives and the conversation sometimes turns sour. She doesn’t have a dislike for it in her preferences. Maybe it’s the squeamish trait? But if not that, I can only conclude that she dislikes the risk and worries about him getting hurt.

The Culinary Librarian Aspiration by Keksdrache Updated

Another aspiration I was asked to update. This was last updated in 2020 and needed some updates to match the way the game does things now and to add some newer options. You can see the original here.

I made some changes. A decent amount of changes. Some were to make the mod work at all. Some were to remove overrides--there were many overrides, and now there are none. Some were because once I removed the overrides, parts no longer worked as I assume they did, and I don't understand how they did work then, because they shouldn't have. Keksdrache did a good job getting it to work, but it makes no sense to me that it did. As a side effect, I fixed an issue that existed in the aspiration from the start--it now works even if you already know the recipes.

The Culinary Librarian Lifetime Wish in Sims 3 has always been one of my favourite, despite not beeing updated for all the expansions added recipes. I wanted something similar for the Sims 4 so I created this custom aspiration. To make it a bit more interesting I made objectives that require the player to cook certain dishes with either high skill requirements in different skills or special ingredients. And of course you will have to eat tons of food to learn all the recipes from San Myshuno, Brindleton Bay, the experimental dishes and Selvadora! Description: There is a vast array of recipes to prepare for hungry guests and famished family members. By mastering the cooking skills and perusing the food stalls for recipes, your Sim can become a walking library of culinary expertise. The aspiration can be found in the Food category and therefor gives the Essence of Flavor Bonus Trait.

The reason that it's now learn and cook is that it was originally done using a statistic, and that statistic would not work when done as an injection. It may have worked if I left it as an override and just updated that, but that's not a thing I can do. It would need constant updating and conflict with too many things. Learning is no longer tracked, just that you cook the unlocked recipe.

By request, added Batuu recipes, Cottage Living recipes, and Eco Lifestyle recipes.

By request, added Life and Death recipe. You have to eat the Boiling Death Frog Hot Pot, not cook it, because it's not a distinct recipe the way others are. What you get is based on the ingredients used, and the ingredient test I tried didn't work.

Re-organized objectives to accommodate the new recipes, because there is apparently a limit of four levels and four objectives per level.

New strings are added. Some strings are removed.

City Living is now required. Sorry.

Requires Dine Out, Vampires, Spa Day, and City Living.

Prince Aemon Targaryen had eyes "as pale as lilac". His hair was a rare color, rare even in Old Valyria: it was pale, and shone like white gold. Aemon was tall and handsome, even as a boy of seven. He was taller than his younger brother Baelon, and stronger. By the time Aemon was fifteen years old, he was six feet and two inches tall. As a young child, Aemon was very serious, cautious, careful, and obedient. Aemon was fast friends with his brother Baelon, and would train with him in the yard. They were evenly matched against each other, and their contests were very spirited, always drawing crowds of onlookers.

Prince Baelon Targaryen at birth was smaller than his older brother, Aemon. He was louder and lustier, however. There are so many stories/shows/etc. that are boring, poorly-executed or even hurtful that I find them a bit difficult to re-experience or recommend to others. But they still have a nugget of kindness, or brilliance, that's really stuck with me. So in this post I'm gonna briefly talk about some of them. These are media I can't wholeheartedly recommend for one reason or another, but have something worth talking about, and they're all dear to me.

Fields of Mistria. Basically a clone of Stardew Valley with very very pretty art, and really really good writing. In fact, it doesn't really deserve much negative criticism at all. Everyone loves it; even Toby Fox follows the social media account. It's brilliance lies in its NPC dynamic/reactive dialogue (like Hades), and even the kid NPCs are fun to talk to, which is a rare feat. The only criticism I have is that despite its attempt at a community-focused story, it is still built upon the capitalist/individualist cozy gameplay systems of Stardew. Now, I don't mind enjoying a money-goes-up simulator, but it always feels a bit jarring to have ten morbillion dollars in these sorts of games. A bit like in Metaphor in which you're kinda poor story-wise (in that game you can't even spare a penny for a homeless person!) but absolutely stacked gameplay-wise. This seems like a small nitpick, but it does take me out of the feel-good vibes of the game just a bit. What this game nails, however, is the intrinsic reward just hanging out with NPCs, because they actually have plenty of interesting things to say. I love this game, and it's probably the most fun I'll have in a farming-sim. If you want more discussion of money-goes-up cozy games, Zoe Bee's got a great video on this.

Metaphor Re:Fantazio: Some of the most fun gameplay I've had in an RPG, basically 'what if Persona games were fun to play?' Although the characters are great, the story is weak at best, and preaches about racism and politics in a way that feels like they were trying to be sincere but they have no clue what they're talking about. It makes me make this face -> :/

Anime quick-fire round:

Studio Trigger originals: Every one I've watched is worth watching again and again and again. Every one I've watched has a crappy ending that sometimes contradicts the message of the show just so it can have an unexpected twist.

Stars Align: Ostensibly about tennis, this is a really caring show about child abuse and trauma that doesn't feel overdramatic, and has some amazing writing and characters, including trans ones. One of my favourite shows ever, although only half the story made it into the anime and the rest will likely never be made, so that's a sour point for many people.

Wonder Egg Priority: GOD IT SUCKS. REALLY REALLY BAD. Except, episode 1 and 12 are some of the best-written, best-looking, best-directed things ever made and I really do mean that. Do not watch the other episodes.

The Gender of Mona Lisa: I could probably talk about this manga forever! Because overall it sucks! Basically, the premise is that everyone gets to choose their sex once puberty starts, but for some reason the gender binary, interphobia and homophobia are still around. Which makes for a very interesting story! Or it would, if there wasn't the most boring-ass love-triangle taking up most of it. Plot points like the creepy doctor, the reason there aren't many other intersex or nonbinary people, and even the love-triangle itself never get closure! It's such a frustrating read because it could be so, so much better. But iirc the author just wanted an excuse to draw an androgynous person in a love-triangle. Even still, the nuggets of brilliance make this worth reading, despite it mostly being crap.

That's all my 'mediocre but absolutely worth experiencing' media I can think of right now. If any of those seem mildly interesting, please check them out! Just don't have super high expectations.

Sul Sul! Are you a player who wants to participate in a legacy challenge but the idea of 10 generations is a bit daunting? What happened in your past? Who knows. All anyone knows now is you are public enemy number 1 (or at least working your way towards it). Someone hurt you and now your goal is to hurt basically everyone. Your temper is short, social circle small (besides ghosts who haunt you and people who hate you), and your cooking skill low. One day, out in the city, you stumble across someone who, despite everything in you, you like having alive. They’re not even all bad - shocking to you. You may be able to put your mischief to the side for this one Sim, but that doesn’t mean forever.

Traits: Hot Headed, Evil, and Jealous

Goals:

No one ever told you directly what was going on, but you were always a little paranoid. As you grew up it all became more apparent and you couldn’t help but start to act out. Your grades start to slip, your friendships turn sour, and soon some of your only companions are plants. As an adult this doesn’t change much. Your greenhouse is your safe place, your bees and Cowplants protect you from the outside world, and your best conversations are held with your garden. You flower arrange to pass the time, work tirelessly on your garden, and one day a suspicious black flower slips into a bouquet….

They’ve never lead you wrong. . . On the other side is a world unlike your own. It’s filled with glowing lights of all colors, sims holding wands, cauldrons full of … Mac and Cheese? Unsure what’s going on you talk to someone, anyone, everyone. They send you on a quest involving finding things - don’t tell us twice to go search and take things, it’s our favorite thing to do. I’ve been working my way through Diana Gabaldon’s Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone (the 9th book in the Outlander series) for longer than I’d like to admit, even though I do like it. I finally switched to the audiobook version when it became available through my library, so I can make faster progress. I actually listen to a lot of audiobooks, because I spend a lot of time in the car.

🎶 Last Song You Listened To:

I usually only listen to music in the car, so I feel like it must be Doja Cat’s “Need to Know.” It is on eleventy-seven times a day. 🙄

🍽 Sweet/Savory/Spicy:

Ohhhh, I have the worst sweet tooth lately. I can eat Mike & Ikes and Sour Patch Kids until I feel sick.

📯 Currently Working On (Sims-Wise):

I’ve been playing the Becketts exclusively, and they’re up to the year 1861 now. I almost always play one family at a time, legacy-style, until I tire of them or the file becomes corrupt. I think my longest-running save was 14 generations, though.

🤫 Real Life:

I’m quite a bit older than the average Sims player — I discovered the original The Sims when I was a college student in 2000. I played Bob and Betty Newbie when I should have been studying for finals, of course. But now I’m a forty-something-year-old mom, so my real life is all about minivan driving and kid wrangling.

“We shouldn’t go in,” Jon tells his giggling partners very firmly, but they pay him no mind, and he gets dragged by the hand into the storefront.

The girl working the front desk looks up with a vaguely alarmed look on her face, probably because Gerry and Martin look drunk, despite it being 11 A.M. on a Sunday. They are not, although Jon can understand why someone would think that, as they march right up to the desk, faces flushed, still laughing boisterously.

“Is Melanie in? She’s a good mate of mine.” Gerry tells the receptionist.

“Yes, I’ll check with her if she has a second for you.” And she scuttles off to the back.

“It’s Gerry!” He calls off behind her, before turning to grin at Jon. “Don’t hover in the doorway, babe, Melanie doesn’t bite.”

“Melanie is in fact, perfectly capable of biting,” Jon mutters petulantly, as he moves further into the room to eye the art on the walls. “Especially when you used to date her girlfriend.”

“Oh look, my favorite emo goth boy!” Melanie yells, exploding out the back of the store, all 5 feet of her filled with frenzied energy. Her face immediately sours when she catches sight of Jon, hiding behind Martin. “And my least favourite douche bag.”

“Now, now firecracker, be nice to my boyfriend.” Gerry pulls her into a hug, which leads to a headlock and a swift jab to his ribs.

“I’m very happy to be nice to Martin,” She responds sweetly, blowing him a kiss. “What brings you lot over to darken my doorstep?”

“Piercings,” Gerry tells her with an unnatural amount of glee.

“Jon agreed to let me pierce him?” Melanie asks, perking right up at the idea of causing Jon pain.

“No!” Jon exclaims.

At the same time, Gerry says, “Nah, he’s not interested, but Martin and I were wanting something each.”

“Martin?” Melanie asks dubiously, eyeing up sweet-looking, pink-haired, cardigan-clad Martin.

“Yes,” Martin confirms with false solemnity. “Boyfriends who bleed together stay together.”

“You know,” Melanie remarks, grinning at them, “I have heard about that Pagan ritual.”

Jon has slunk over to a wall of healed artwork and concept designs, managing to avoid Melanie's barbs. As far as he is concerned, the art isn’t as interesting as Gerry’s work. Although, he supposes that what you can make beautiful on a canvas is very different from what you can make beautiful on someone's skin.

“I’ve got a bit of an opening now, what do you want to get?” She asks Gerry.

“Well, you know I’ve been wanting to have my nipples done.” He offers, teal eyes looking slightly wild.

“Yeah?” She grins in triumph, “I’ve been waiting for this day.”

“Yup and Martin has been considering something for his ears.”

“Hmmm,” She wanders over to Martin to examine him. “Open for suggestions?”

“Maybe.”

“They’re a good shape. Double helix?” She looks to Gerry for affirmation.

“Definitely.” He smirks, eyes lighting up with satisfaction.

"Two?" Martin looks slightly dubious.

"If you do them together, the pain is only a tiny bit more, and the healing time is two-for-one," Melanie reassures him, and Jon thinks it's the nicest she's ever sounded. "It's up to you though, of course."

Jon steals himself to brave the fray, going over to take Martin's hand. It's slightly clammy with the nerves that Gerry's enthusiasm has prevented up until this point.

"It won't be so bad, love." He presses a kiss to Martin's cheek, offering his support. "Just a small jab, then it's done."

"Let's do it."

There's a brief fuss with consent forms, aftercare instructions, and payment.

"I don't know what you lot," Melanie instructs Gerry firmly, gesturing between them, "get up to in the bedroom, but no twisting, no pulling, no biting, no sucking your nipples for 12 weeks."

Jon blushes, but Gerry and Martin aren't bothered. "Yeah, firecracker, I know the drill. This isn't my first circus."

"Kinky little shit," Jon mutters under his breath, but the goth only winks at him.

Martin's care instructions are less suggestive, and Gerry and Jon both promise to help him with it.

“Martin should go first,” Melanie pronounces, patting the piercing chair as she disinfects her hands and gloves up.

“Me?” Martin asks.

“Yup, yours will be a lot simpler, and I don’t want to traumatise you by making you watch nipple piercings before your turn.”

Martin climbs on the chair, looking a little pale, but resolute. Jon stands on the side not occupied by Melanie, gripping his hand reassuringly. Gerry stands slightly behind the chair, hand on Martin's shoulder.

The ear piercings are almost comically quick and easy. Two quick pinches, less painful than bee stings, and then Martin's ear is pierced and adorned with small hoops.

He sighs with relief and oh's with delight when Gerry hands him a mirror to check them out.

"I love it!" He exclaims, beaming at Jon and Gerry. They smile back at him, each taking a turn to kiss him on the cheek or forehead, their own relief palpable.

"It's just you and me now," Melanie grins at Gerry and gestures for him to strip.

He shucks off his trench coat and black t-shirt, and stands in front of her, completely at ease.

Jon takes a moment to wonder if he has managed to get himself into a relationship with a masochist. Not because of the piercings, but because Gerry seems to genuinely enjoy being friends with Melanie.

The nipple piercings seem to be a much more complicated process, with markings and adjustments, but several rounds of cleaning and disinfecting later, Melanie runs a metal piercing bar through first one nipple and then the other. Gerry hisses with discomfort but stands carefully steady.

She steps back to make sure they look straight and even, before declaring it a success.

"Nice," Gerry says succinctly, looking in the large upright mirror, nodding his head enthusiastically. He and Melanie high five, and she condescends to grip him in a firm hug from the side.

"You sure I can't tempt you, Jon?" Melanie asks him sweetly as she starts to clean up her station, Gerry putting his clothes back on close by.

Knowing she just wants to cause him pain, Jon tells her firmly, "No, thank you."

He is over by the wall again, looking at different art this time, including a picture of a tattoo that catches his focus. It's a playing card amid a complex arm sleeve, an Ace of diamonds, and despite a lifelong disinterest in tattoos, it speaks to him.

"I think you'd look better with a spade, love.” Gerry manages to startle Jon slightly, appearing beside him and wrapping an arm around his waist. Jon marvels at his apparent ability to read his mind.

“You think so?” Jon queries, softly. Gerry hums his affirmation. “It's a bit much though, don't you think?”

"You don't need the whole card, for what you want. Just the A and the spade. Small and bold." He picks up Jon's hand, indicating the spot below his thumb on his wrist.

Gently releasing it, Gerry grabs a pen and scrap of paper and rapidly draws out a solid, simple design.

Jon glances over at Melanie, extremely dubious. "Maybe we can go somewhere else to get it?" He whispers.

Gerry laughs warmly, tapping the small piece of paper. "I could do it for you myself."

Jon blinks at him, rather owlishly. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, I can give you the tattoo. I'm probably a bit rusty, but I did survive a full tattoo apprenticeship. I’ve done about a million over the years, although I had to give up my machine when I moved to London."

"You did a tattoo apprenticeship?" Martin asks from nearby, tone skeptical.

"Yup, when I was living in Edinburgh. All three years." Gerry tells them casually. "That's where I met Melanie, actually."

Jon and Martin exchange a baffled look, but choose to simply file it under 'Things Gerry tells us out of order.'

“Well, if you can do it...” Jon sounds a bit floaty but he is staring at the design yearningly, which Gerry knows is a good sign.

"Firecracker," Gerry yells over to Melanie, "Can I borrow your machine?"

Melanie makes the stencil while Gerry reacquaints himself with the tattoo gun, setting everything up and getting used to the weight of it in his hand again. The rhythm is always the same with tattooing and he feels himself fall into the past a bit.

When everything is ready, he gestures Jon over to sit in the chair, smiling beatifically.

Jon is shaking a little as he slides up onto it, and Gerry presses a reassuring kiss to his hand before he starts the prep.

"You ready?"

Jon gulps. "Yes."

Martin comes over to take Jon's other hand and Melanie hovers nearby, wanting to watch Gerry like a hawk the entire time he's handling her machine. ("It's the true love of her life," Gerry had confessed to Martin earlier. "Don't tell Georgie.")

Gerry follows the same procedure with any tattoo: cleanse, shave, cleanse again. Numbing cream, in this case, to prevent nerve twitches, then alcohol rub down. Eventually, he applies the stencil carefully, making sure to get it straight and in the correct place.

He checks with Jon, making sure that it is where he wants it. Jon confirms, smiling to see the design on his skin for the very first time.

As the buzz of the machine fills the space, Jon and Gerry make eye contact for a moment. Jon's earthy green eyes are wide, and Gerry can almost see where his pulse pounds through his jaguar vein. He stills a moment, really checking Jon's energy.

He's nervous, it's obvious to see, but Gerry can also see the real desire in him, and with a wink, turns to look down at his new canvas. He sets to work, the buzzing of the needle filling the air.

"I love it," Jon whispers to Gerry later, lying in the circle of his arms, Martin's warm weight at his back.

"I love it too." Gerry kisses his forehead sweetly, almost asleep. "Martin, what do you think of your ear?"

"I think boyfriends who commit to pain together stay together," Martin mutters drowsily, repeating his sentiment from earlier.

"Ah, yes," Jon mutters, "The great cosmic bond of suffering."

They laugh easily, the hot excitement of the day echoing within them, yet another thread in the colourful tapestry of their relationship.

targaryen sims pt. III

Prince Aemon Targaryen had eyes "as pale as lilac". His hair was a rare color, rare even in Old Valyria: it was pale, and shone like white gold. Aemon was tall and handsome, even as a boy of seven. He was taller than his younger brother Baelon, and stronger. By the time Aemon was fifteen years old, he was six feet and two inches tall. As a young child, Aemon was very serious, cautious, careful, and obedient. Aemon was fast friends with his brother Baelon, and would train with him in the yard. They were evenly matched against each other, and their contests were very spirited, always drawing crowds of onlookers.

Prince Baelon Targaryen at birth was smaller than his older brother, Aemon. He was louder and lustier, however. The first time Baelon visited the Dragonpit, he hit Balerion on the snout, causing Ser Samgood of the Kingsguard to remark that he was either brave or mad. Ever since, Baelon was also known as Baelon the Brave.

Princess Alyssa Targaryen was long-faced and skinny. She had dirty blond tangled hair, without a trace of silver. She had mismatched eyes, one violet, the other green. She had big ears and a lopsided smile. At the age of six she broke her nose, which healed crooked. As a child, she did not act like a girl. She would dress in boy's clothes whenever possible, and preferred to ride, climb, and duel with wooden swords over more lady-like activities, and shunned the company of girls. Alyssa was strong, quick, and spirited. She loved to boast that she was "as bawdy a wench as any barmaid in King's Landing".

Septa Maegelle Targaryen as a girl was gentle, quiet, studious, and exceedingly bright, and was said to read from the Seven-Pointed Star every night before sleep, and was eager to take the vows. She was known for her compassion, and her gift for healing.

Archmaester Vaegon Targaryen had the silver-gold hair and purple eyes of the Targaryens. However, he could not be described as "comely": he had a long face and round shoulders, even at a young age. He always had a pinched sour cast to his mouth. He was not a coward, but neither took joy from the play of squires and pages. He was a miserable fighter, and not well-trained at arms. He was a bookish boy and much preferred the library, where he could often be found. Books were his only passion. When he had to speak he was often blunt, though never intentionally cruel: he always dutifully performed perfunctory courtesies, but no more.

Princess Daella Targaryen was small of stature: on her toes she stood five feet and two inches. Everyone who met her judged her younger than she was in truth, as there was a childish aspect to her. As she grew to maidenhood she was described as pretty, enough to attract the attention of young lords, but wasn't singled out as exceptionally beautiful. Daella was considered sweet, kind, and gentle, with a tender heart. However, she was also a delicate and shy, tongue-tied girl, who was easily frightened and quick to cry. She liked flowers but was afraid of gardens, bees, and cats

When I got to the end of the aisle, I looked back and there was this decrepit old man sloooowly bending down to pick the box of cereal I’d dropped up off the floor. That truly humbled me and taught me such an important lesson that I still think about now, 15ish years later.
