Greetings, fellow bloggers! We welcome you to join us in discovering, honoring, and promoting the potential future of social networking—commonly referred to as the "Fediverse."

The Fediverse, or Federation Universe, refers to a collective of online platforms that utilize the web protocol known as ActivityPub, which has set a standard of excellence in regards to both protecting and respecting users' online privacies.

There's a good chance in the past few years that you've caught wind of the fedi family's critically acclaimed Mastodon; however, there are many other unique platforms worth your consideration...

✨ Where To Begin?

Conveniently enough, from the minds of brilliant independent developers, there already likely exists a Fediverse equivalent to your favorite socials. Whether it's an opinion from the critics, or from the community alike—the following popular websites are commonly associated with one another:

Friendica 🐰 = Facebook Mastodon 🐘 = Twitter Pixelfed 🐼 = Instagram PeerTube 🐙 = YouTube Lemmy 🐭 = Reddit

It's worth mentioning, too, a few other sites and forks thereof that are worthy counterparts, which be: Pleroma 🦊 & Misskey 🐱, microblogs also similar to Twitter/Mastodon. Funkwhale 🐋 is a self-hosting audio streamer, which pays homage to the once-popular GrooveShark. For power users, Hubzilla 🐨 makes a great choice (alongside Friendica) when choosing macroblogging alternatives.

✨ To Be Clear...

To address the technicalities: aside from the "definitive" Fediverse clients, we will also be incorporating any platforms that utilize ActivityPub-adjacent protocols as well. These include, but are not limited to: diaspora*; AT Protocol (Bluesky 🦋); Nostr; OStatus; Matrix; Zot; etc. We will NOT be incorporating any decentralized sites that are either questionably or proven to be unethical. (AKA: Gab has been exiled.)

✨ Why Your Privacy Matters

You may ask yourself, as we once did, "Why does protecting my online privacy truly matter?" While it may seem innocent enough on the surface, would it change your mind that it's been officially shared by former corporate media employees that data is more valuable than money to these companies? Outside of the ethical concerns surrounding these concepts, there are many other reasons why protecting your data is critical, be it: security breaches which jeopardize your financial info and risk identity theft; continuing to feed algorithms which use psychological manipulation in attempts to sell you products; the risk of spyware hacking your webcams and microphones when you least expect it; amongst countless other possibilities that can and do happen to individuals on a constant basis. We wish it could all just be written off as a conspiracy... but, with a little research, you'll swiftly realize the validity of these claims are not to be ignored any longer. The solution? Taking the decentralized route.

✨ Our Mission For This Blog

Our mission for establishing this blog includes 3 core elements:

To serve as a hub which anybody can access in order to assist themselves in either: becoming a part of the Fediverse, gaining the resources/knowledge to convince others to do the very same, and providing updates on anything Fedi-related.

We are determined to do anything within our power to prevent what the future of the Internet could become if active social users continue tossing away their data, all while technologies are advancing at faster rates with each passing year. Basically we'd prefer not to live in a cyber-Dystopia at all costs.

Tumblr (Automattic) has expressed interest in switching their servers over to ActivityPub after Musk's acquisition of then-Twitter, and are officially in the transitional process of making this happen for all of us. We're hoping our collective efforts may at some point be recognized by @staff, which in turn will encourage their efforts and stand by their decision.

With that being stated, we hope you decide to follow us here, and decide to make the shift—as it is merely the beginning. We encourage you to send us any questions you may have, any personal suggestions, or corrections on any misinformation you may come across.

Just A Nobody - Part 2 | Mabel

Pairing: Mabel x reader

Warnings: mentions of substance abuse and addiction, swearing

Summary: You never wanted to return to New Bedford, but when your dad relapses, you’re forced to go back for the summer and work to earn some money to pay for his rehab.

After the incident with Charlie’s dad at Rasputin’s, I excused myself and drove home in my dad’s old pick up truck, which I borrowed the moment I stepped foot back into this godforsaken town. It’s not like he’s going to need it any time soon, and it’s easier to get around with it than with my old – now probably rusty– bicycle.

I found my dad sleeping off a hangover on the couch, and turned off the TV when I saw that he’d been watching the news where footage of me and the other’s being rescued keeps being replayed and talked about.

Then, I cleaned up the empty beer bottles around him, trying not to feel too bitter about the whole situation before calling Dan and asking him for a job down at the docks where he owns a boat repair shop.

He hesitated at first because he thought it would be best if I just stayed home and looked after my dad for the time being, but I insisted and he finally agreed, which is how I ended up where I am right now, down by the docks, sweating and scraping barnacles off the hull of an old sailboat.

I’m wearing gloves and a pair of safety goggles while hacking away at the barnacles above me, making sure not to be too rough to prevent damaging the boat.

My arms are burning and my neck is aching from looking up for over an hour now, but I continue working, letting my frustration fuel me.

I thought fishing would be bad, being stuck on a boat for ten days with strangers while trying not to think about the blue abyss below us, but this is even worse, and I don’t even get paid half as much as fishing would have payed, but work is work and I need all the money I can get.

Charlie and Tom are out, trying to find a new site, but I doubt they will find one anytime soon, so I’ll have to stick with this. Dan’s wife Karen, who despite her name is the kindest woman I know, has also offered me a job at her cafe in town, which I gladly accepted, meaning from now on, I’ll be spending my mornings at the cafe and the afternoon’s down by the docks.

“You know, you don’t look like a writer.”

I stop what I’m doing and whirl around, feeling my stomach swoop at the sight of Mabel who’s watching me with an amused expression.

“Excuse me?” I take off my gloves and goggles and brush pieces of barnacle off my shirt. I have no idea where she came from and what she’s doing here, but I’m not complaining because even though I only saw her this morning, she is a sight for sore eyes.

“I said, you don’t look like a writer,” she quips, gesturing at me which makes me raise an eyebrow.

“Is that so?” I ask, playing along.

Mabel nods, her eyes lighting up at the fact that I took the bait.

“Okay then, what is a writer supposed to look like?” I question, crossing my arms after putting the gloves and goggles on a stack of crates next to me.

Mabel steps closer and pokes my arm. “For starters, I’d say every writer wears glasses. Even if they're fake because they make you look more intellectual.”

I huff in amusement and run a hand through my sweaty hair. “Well, you’ll be disappointed to hear that I do wear glasses then,” I say, enjoying the way she seems surprised by that fact. “The real kind, not the fake kind either. Just not right now because contacts are more practical.”

Getting over her slight surprise fairly quickly, Mabel squares her shoulders and tilts her head playfully. “Okay then, you got me there, but you’re not dressed like a typical writer. You know, turtle necks, cardigans…”

I throw my head back and let out a booming laugh. “You expect me to wear a cardigan to scrape barnacles off the bottom of a boat?”

“Well, no.” She smiles sheepishly, her seemingly sky-high confidence dwindling for a moment. “But you also don’t seem like the type to wear turtle necks and cardigans.”

I chuckle and shrug. “You’re right, I usually don’t, but I do own a couple turtle necks because I get cold easily. Where is this coming from anyway? Anyone can write, you know that, right? You don’t have to look or dress a certain way to do it.”

“I mean, I guess.” She steps even closer with a smile still playing on her lips, making my breath hitch. Her dark eyes roam over my face before dropping down to take in the rest of me which makes me cringe slightly because I don’t exactly look appealing right now covered in barnacle pieces and sweat. “But you just don’t strike me as a writer,” she adds as if in afterthought which makes me frown.

“Ouch.”

“Wha–” her eyes snap back up to my own, “Wait, I didn’t mean it as an insult, I just– You look outdoors-y, you know. I mean, you’re tall and athletic looking and your shoulders–”

“My shoulders?” I cut her off with an amused snort. I’m not actually hurt by what she said, I just wanted to throw her off a little because she keeps making my stomach do those little flips.

“I–” she gapes at me and even though her ears are partially covered by her dark hair I can still see the tips of them turning pink. “Yeah, your arms and your shoulders… It’s– You know what, forget it. I liked you better when you were quiet.”

That makes me laugh again and I realize that my sour mood from earlier has completely vanished. “No, no, I get it.” I uncross my arms and shoot her a placating smile. “I do exercise and I like being outside, so I get where you’re coming from. I mainly surf, but I also do other stuff.”

“You surf?” she perks up.

“Mhmm. Ever since I was little. There’s a great beach twenty minutes from here where I learned,” I explain. “But I haven’t gotten around to doing it much lately because of school and living in the city.”

Mabel nods along as I talk, her curious eyes never leaving my face. “Well then it’s great that you’re back for the summer. You can surf whenever you want. Well, whenever you’re not out at sea, I guess.”

The smile I had on my face ever since she showed up drops and I bring my hand up to rub at the back of my neck. “Yeah…”

She’s right. I can go surfing now, but that’s not why I came back. I have to be here.

Sensing the shift in mood, Mabel frowns worriedly. “Oh-Uh… Did I say something wrong?”

I inhale sharply and clench my fists, an action that doesn’t go unnoticed by the brunette. “No, no. Not at all, I just–I should get back to work. Don’t wanna get in trouble with my boss.”

Mabel’s frown deepens and she glances around as if in search of the aforementioned boss. We’re alone though, but she doesn’t comment on it. She simply nods timidly and steps back with a troubled look in her eyes. “Alright. I... It was nice getting to know you a little.”

I force a smile and dip my chin in acknowledgement. “Yeah, you, too. See you around, Mabel.”

She raises her hand in greeting and shoots me a thin-lipped smile. “Yeah, see you.”

I turn around and put my gloves and goggles back on, feeling Mabel’s eyes on me for a little while longer while I get back to work until she eventually leaves, leaving me with a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Despite our interactions so far being fairly short, I like her, and I feel bad for blowing her off the way I did, but her words reminded me of why I’m back here and I hate it.

It’s also probably for the better not to get too attached to her because I’ll just leave again at the end of the summer and, being a dealer, she’s involved in a world I don’t want to be a part of.

“Dad?” I kick off my boots and drag myself into the apartment after locking the front door behind me.

I don’t get an answer, and when I turn around the corner I see why. My dad is still on the couch where I left him, sleeping off his hangover.

I sigh and go to the fridge, pulling out some ham and cheese to make myself a sandwich.

It’s dark outside now, and my arms and shoulders are aching from all the work I’ve done. After Mabel left, I worked for another couple of hours before Dan found me and forced me to go home and rest.

“You need sleep, kid. It’s been a rough day. Just come back tomorrow,” he said, and before I could protest, my body betrayed me by making me yawn which settled the argument.

I sigh again when I finally finish making my sandwich and turn around to lean back against the counter and eat my sandwich with my eyes closed, basking in the silence.

When I’m done, I almost consider going to bed without showering because I’m just so tired, but then I decide against it because I’m covered in sweat and barnacle pieces, two things I really don’t want sticking to my sheets.

I make sure all the windows are closed and cover my dad with a thin blanket before heading toward the small bathroom next to my room down the hall.

I shower quickly and brush my teeth before heading back to my room and slipping into some sweatpants and an old shirt.

I’m about to get into bed and turn off the lights, but then my phone rings and I grab it off the nightstand to see that it’s Charlie who’s calling me.

“What’s up? Did you and Tom manage to get a new site?” I ask, slipping into bed with my phone pressed against my ear.

Charlie lets out a hollow laugh. “No, not really, but we’ll figure something out sooner or later. How are you? I’m just calling to check in because we haven’t really talked about what happened yet.”

“You mean almost drowning in a fucking ship wreck?” I ask sarcastically which makes him wince.

“Yeah… That. How are you? What have you been up to since this morning?”

“I actually got a job down by the docks,” I say, running my hand through my damp hair. “My dad’s friend Dan owns a boat repair shop.”

“Really?”

I hum in agreement. Charlie doesn’t know about the internship I had to blow off, or about why I came back, which is why I’m not surprised by what he says next.

“Jesus, Y/N. You’ve got to give yourself a break. We could have died last night, and yet here you are, already working again. Why don’t you take a couple of days off? At least until Tom and I manage to find a new site?”

I want to snap at him, and tell him that, I can’t take a couple of days off because unlike his dad, mine isn’t rich, but I don’t because he doesn’t deserve it.

“I can’t, Charlie,” I admit. “My dad… He can’t work at the moment and we’re strapped for cash, so it’s up to me to pay the bills.”

“Oh.”

Yeah, oh.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know.”

I slip under the covers of my bed and look out of the window at the empty street below. “It’s okay. It’s not your fault.”

“Still…” Charlie trails off, probably thinking of lending me money or something. I don’t want his money though, not because I couldn’t use it–because I definitely could–but because I would have to tell him why I need it. Luckily, I don’t have to come up with an excuse why I can’t accept any money he may offer though because he clears his throat a moment later and changes the subject. “You know, Costa is throwing a barbeque tomorrow afternoon, and he’s asked me to invite you.”

“He did?”

“Yeah. Says he’d love it if you managed to swing by so he can get to know you better before we go out fishing again.”

I huff and close the curtains in front of my window, blocking out the light of the street lamp below. “You mean if we go out fishing again.”

Charlie chuckles. “Oh, come on now, don’t be so cynic. We will get another site, it’s just a matter of time. Now, what do you say?”

“I’ll think about it,” I say, and I really do mean it.

Charlie clicks his tongue. “I’ll take that.”

“Mhmm.”

Charlie and I spend a little more time chatting about our day before we finally hang up and I go to sleep.

I have an early start tomorrow morning because I’m on the opening shift of the cafe and I promised Karen I’d be there at six, right in time to get everything ready before the fishermen and sailors trail into the shop to get their morning coffee at six thirty.

I just know it’s going to be an exhausting day, especially because I’m also going to be working at the docks again after lunch, but I really need the money.

The morning rush is finally over, and I take a moment to collect myself between bags of coffee beans in the storage room in the back of the cafe.

I have never in my life made as many coffees as I did in the last two and a half hours, and I’m not looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow especially because I’m just getting started and learning how to navigate all the equipment.

More than once, I’ve spilled something today, and I even got my fair share of burns while steaming milk in a rush, but I’ll survive.

Karen assured me I did a great job, but she did have to help out a lot and I know I slowed things down considerably, but still, she never once got upset with me and I know it’s because she knows why I asked her for the job in the first place.

She and Dan have known my dad ever since I was little, so they're familiar with his addiction. They even told me that they’d chip in and help me pay for his rehab if they weren’t just as strapped for cash as we are.

“Y/N, sweetie? Are you okay?”

I look up to find Karen standing in the doorway with a gentle smile. Her blonde and gray hair is pulled back into a messy ponytail and her kind blue eyes take me in with a knowing look.

I nod and stop leaning against the wall, brushing my hands down the front of my black apron. “Yeah, I’m fine. Sorry, just needed a second to breathe. I’ll be right back out.”

“No, don’t worry, it’s okay. Ben’s got it covered. Are you sure you’re okay? You seem off.” She comes closer and I avert my eyes, trying to push my emotions down, but then she touches my shoulder and tears spring to my eyes, which, of course, doesn’t go by unnoticed. “Hey, hey, hey, what is it?”

She’s always been like an aunt to me and even though I hate crying in front of others, she’s one of the only people I feel safe with, so I let my exhaustion and frustration get the better of me, collapsing into her when she pulls me into a tentative hug.

“I…” I try to speak, but a sob slips past my lips as I bend down and bury my face against the side of her neck.

The position we’re in is a bit awkward because I’m a good couple of inches taller than her, but she somehow makes it work by tightening her arms around me and running a hand up and down my back.

“Is it your dad?” she asks and I shake my head because it’s not just that.

“N-no. I mean, yes, but–” I sniffle and pull back to wipe at my eyes while Karen rubs her hands up and down my arms. “There was this internship in New York I had to cancel because of him– so I could be here and work to pay for his rehab and I– I love my dad, but a part of me just can’t help but hate him because I… I worked so hard to get this internship and it might have been my only chance to make it as an author and now I’m back here and–and–”

“Hey… breathe, Y/N.” Karen pulls me back into a hug while I hiccup and sob.

“I hate it. I hate it here. I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to work here. Why can’t I just have a normal life? A normal dad? It’s just… he ruins everything. Since I was fifteen I had to look after him, not the other way around. It’s so… fucked up.” I shudder, feeling an immense weight lifting off my shoulder. I’ve been dying to say those things ever since I got Dan’s call two weeks ago.

That feeling of relief is short lived though because a moment later, guilt washes over me. I know my dad is trying his best, but it’s just not good enough. He is family though, and I’m all he has left.

“I’m sorry, Y/N. Truly. You deserve better. I-I don’t know what to do to make you feel better, but just know, you can always come talk to me,” Karen reassures me, pressing a kiss to my hairline.

You deserve better.

She’s right, I deserve better. I’ve known since I was fifteen and rode my bike home in the pouring rain after one of my jobs, but that doesn’t change anything about my current situation. Still, it’s nice to hear someone else say it for a change.

“Thanks, Karen.” I blink back the rest of my tears and pull back again with a sad smile.

I feel even more exhausted than before, but when Karen offers to let me take the rest of the shift off, I refuse. Work keeps my mind off of things, and I’m not ready to go home and face my dad.

After splashing some water on my face in the bathroom and pulling myself together, I head back to the front of the cafe. My coworker Ben asks me to clear some tables while he and Karen handle the coffee orders and takeout customers.

I grab a tray and start making my way through the small cafe, collecting empty mugs and plates until one of the customers stops me.

“Excuse me? Could I please get another latte macchiato with oat milk?”

“Yes, of course, one moment,” I nod absentmindedly and go to walk past her, but then I stop and look up when I realize that her voice sounds familiar. “Mabel?”

Mabel's eyes snap up from a notebook on the table, her surprise mirroring my own. But she recovers quickly, offering a hesitant smile as she perks up. “Y/N, hi. Sorry, I didn’t realize it was you. I– Since when do you work here?” she asks.

For a moment, I just look at her, taking in the way a few strands of dark hair frame her face while the rest is pulled back into a low ponytail. Her dark gray knit sweater drapes loosely over her frame, looking effortlessly comfortable. It pairs perfectly with her faded jeans and well-worn Converse.

“I just started this morning, can’t you tell? ” I ask, making her chuckle when I show her the little burn marks on the back of my hand.

“Oh, that’s– that looks painful,” she says, obviously a little at a loss for words.

I shrug and shift the tray in my hands. “It’s not as bad as it looks, honestly, but I’m glad I’m on clean up duty now.”

“I bet.” Mabel smiles and her eyes linger on me a little longer than necessary before she frowns. “Wait, did you get fired yesterday? Is that why you’re here now and no longer scraping shit off the bottom of boats?”

It’s my turn to chuckle this time. “No, I still do that—just not in the mornings. I work here first, then head down to the docks in the afternoon.”

Mabel’s eyebrows shoot up. “You work two jobs? Are you, like, saving up for something?

I don’t want to say yes because then she’ll ask what I’m saving up for, but I can’t say no, because why would I work this much if I don’t have to, so I settle for, “Just life, I guess. Gotta get ahead of things while I can, right?”

Obviously not buying it, curiosity flashes through Mabel’s eyes, but she doesn’t push it. “Right,” she says, her eyes darting to her notebook for a moment before looking back up with an apologetic expression.. “Look, about yesterday– I want to apologize again if I somehow crossed a line or something. I didn’t mean to–”

"It's fine," I interrupted gently. "You just caught me off guard with something I don't really like to talk about. I should be the one apologizing—I didn’t mean to brush you off the way I did."

Mabel’s eyes soften. “No, it’s fine. I understand. Let’s just forget about it, yeah?”

I nod and smile tentatively. I thought she was going to be a little bitter about it, but apparently not. “Yeah, okay.”

She beams and snaps her notebook shut, shifting in her seat so she’s facing me properly. “Great, so now that that’s out of the way, will I ever get the chance to read something you’ve written?”

Surprised, I almost knock one of the empty mugs off my tablet. “I– You want to read my work?”

“Of course.” She crosses her legs, resting her elbow on the small table beside her before propping her chin in her hand. “I want to know if it’s really as good as Charlie says.”

The way her eyes linger on me makes heat creep up the back of my neck and I have to look away for a moment before answering. “I mean, some of my essays are available online, so you could always start with that.”

Considering it for a moment, Mabel chews on the inside of her cheek. “I guess, but isn’t there anything else you’ve written? Like a short story or– Oh, something no one else has read before?” She smirks, and my mind instantly drifts to the writing journal on my nightstand back home—filled with short stories and random ideas, none of which anyone but me has ever been privy to.

The thought of sharing it feels almost too personal, but the way Mabel looks at me with her dark brown like she can see right through me, makes me want to. Not yet, but maybe once we know each other a little better, so I say, “Maybe…”

She tilts her head curiously. “Maybe? What’s that supposed to mean?”

I chuckle and shrug innocently. “Maybe means maybe.”

“Come onnn, ” she whines playfully.

I shake my head, still smiling. “I’ll think about it.”

She huffs, but gives up, knowing I’m not going to give in any time soon. She’s about to say something else when Karen calls for me to get some more coffee beans.

“I’m sorry, duty calls, but it was nice talking to you again,” I say, turning to leave, but she stops me by tugging on my sleeve.

“Wait, are you going to be at Costa’s barbeque later?”

I want to say no because I’ve thought about it and I’m honestly not in the mood to socialize when I should be working, but the way a shiver runs up my spine at her touch makes me reconsider.

“I… Yeah, I think so. Why? Will you be there?” I ask and when she nods I feel my heart flutter. “Alright then, I’ll see you later.”

So much for not getting too attached.

“Yes, see you later,” she says with a bright smile and just like yesterday, I feel her eyes on me when I get back to work.

This week, word got out that the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, was looking to hire “world-class talent to work long hours identifying/eliminating waste, fraud and abuse.” It turns out that people had a lot of ideas about who should apply for those jobs. Elon Musk and his team of 19-24 year old tech minions have been bulldozing through federal agencies, hacking into sensitive data, shutting down USAID, threatening federal workers with termination, and a host of other illegal and questionable activities. Protests against Musk and DOGE erupted in cities nationwide. Now, the hiring site join.doge.gov has become a focal point for the outrage as people submit mock applications. Hitler, Mussolini and Franco all “submitted” applications. One comment quipped “There’s a lot of out-of-work fascists since WWII.” Under qualifications, their applications mentioned things like “good at getting rid of bureaucratic red tape” and “leader in downsizing populations.” Cruella De Vil (using the email [email protected]) let Musk know that she has experience in breaking up Black/white relationships, views DOG(E)s as part of her brand, and has conducted round-ups before. Ebenezer Scrooge, though ineligible for being a British citizen, nonetheless lauded his world-famous “penny-pinching” and “ruthless cost-saving measures” and “willingness to work on holidays.” The Grinch wrote, “I stole Christmas. What more do you need?” At one point, the website threw up blocks to prevent online attacks. It’s back now (in case you were wondering).

This flood of spam comments and fake responses to the DOGE hiring site is one of many similar campaigns aiming to overwhelm hotlines and emails. A Missouri government tip site for submitting complaints about gender-affirming care was taken down after people overwhelmed it with rambling anecdotes and the “Bee Movie” script. Similar protest emails have been sent to the Office of Personnel Management, or OPM, which is trying to get reports of noncompliance with their anti-trans efforts. Sending messages to [email protected], people are attempting to use a flood of complaints to prevent snitching from targeting federal workers upholding trans inclusion. After the Trump administration warned federal employees of “adverse consequences” for not reporting colleagues resisting orders to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs, citizens began submitting false reports to the special email account: [email protected]. Here’s one example: “A man named Donald Trump is doing affirmative action for billionaires and oligarchs against the mandate to stop hiring minority groups.” Another campaign has been emailing the DOGE Caucus and suggesting that they cut the military budget or SpaceX contracts instead. (DOGE itself has no publicly available emails, but people can contact this pro-DOGE group at: [email protected]) The tactic of spamming websites, emails and hotlines tries to render them inoperable, or at least inconvenient, to those trying to use them to report or repress resistance. These kind of tactics have been used numerous times, often to great success. In 2021, Reddit users supported striking Kellogg’s workers by crashing the scab hiring website. In 2022, a teen coded a program to help other teens spam a tip line for reporting critical race theory being taught in schools. In 2024, Utah and Indiana’s snitch lines on bathroom accessibility was overwhelmed with hoax reports. Humor and rebellious defiance play an important role in these bleak times. The fake applications aren’t just about jamming up the system. They’re returning a sense of agency to people, affirming their humanity and unleashing a bit of much-needed laughter.

The anonymous image board 4chan has survived years of controversy. It weathered user and advertiser boycotts as well as damning accusations that it incubated hate speech that may have fueled mass shootings. Users have convened on 4chan to plan hacks like DDoS attacks, and conspiracy theories that festered on 4chan even reportedly inspired the January 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol. On Monday night and Tuesday, though, the platform faced its latest test after a series of outages led to speculation that the site had been hacked.

The core feature 4chan provides is public anonymity to post text and images, but the platform itself does collect information about users, such as their IP addresses. As a result, a breach of the website could represent a significant exposure of data that was intended to be private.

“4chan is an anonymous message board that enables often offensive and hateful content. The content leaked, if genuine, would remove some of the anonymity from 4chan administrators, moderators, and janitors,” says Ian Gray, director of analysis and research at the security firm Flashpoint. The image board’s billing as an “anonymous” platform may have given users a ��false sense of security,” Gray says. “Some users may have registered their email addresses years ago when they were less aware or concerned about their operational security.”

Reports about the apparent hack began circulating after a previously banned board on 4chan briefly appeared online and the site was defaced with a message saying, “U GOT HACKED XD.” Subsequently, an online account on a rival forum known as Soyjak.party posted screenshots allegedly showing 4chan’s backend systems, plus a list of alleged 4chan administrator and moderator usernames, with associated email addresses. Following this post of 4chan administrator email addresses, Soyjak.party users started posting alleged doxes, including photos and personal information, of the accounts included in the leak.

WIRED has not been able to confirm whether the data is legitimate. A press email address associated with 4chan as well as two alleged administrator emails from the leaked data did not immediately respond to WIRED’s requests for comment on the hack and its validity. One of the site’s moderators said they believed the hack and leaks were real, according to a report by TechCrunch.

Rumors also started circulating on Tuesday that the breach is the result of 4chan running legacy, unpatched software that exposed the platform to attack. After a breach a decade ago, 4chan founder Christopher Poole, known online as “moot,” wrote in a blog post, “[We] have spent—and will continue to spend—dozens of hours poring over our software and systems to help mitigate and prevent future intrusions. We’re sorry it happened, and will do our best to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”

Emiliano De Cristofaro, a computer science and engineering professor at UC Riverside, who has researched the impact of 4chan on the web, says the ramifications could be large if the hack is confirmed.

“It seems true that 4chan hasn't been properly maintained and patched for years, which might indicate that a hack would have definitely been a possibility,” De Cristofaro says. “There might be some ‘high profile’ users exposed as moderators—traditionally, 4chan users hate them, so they might be targeted. It might be hard or at least painfully slow and costly for 4chan to recover from this, so we might really see the end of 4chan as we know it.”

Initial reports posted on Soyjak.party referencing a 4chan hack appeared to say that Soyjak.party members may have been involved in the attack. One post claimed that a hacker had been in 4chan’s systems “for over a year” and exposed personal information allegedly linked to 4chan users and administrators. And multiple screenshots posted on Soyjak.party appear to show someone accessing 4chan’s internal systems. These include images of someone with administrator access to a 4chan backend database, stats about users on various sections of 4chan, a page showing deleted posts and the IP addresses they were made from, as well as other internal documentation. Some reports also claim that hackers stole 4chan’s source code.

In recent years, 4chan has increasingly been on the radar of US government officials. The website has reportedly been kept online due in part to investment by a Japanese company. In June 2023, WIRED reported on internal 4chan documents that showed how the site’s policies shaped the highly toxic nature of the platform—including how moderators explicitly allow racism. In most cases, the documents showed, calls for violence on 4chan are not met with user bans.

“If the data is legitimate, information on members and posting could be useful for law enforcement investigations,” Flashpoint’s Gray says. “4chan has been around since at least 2003, which is extremely notable for any online service. Aside from the offensive and often extremist content, a lot of internet culture has originated from 4chan. If this is a death knell for 4chan, other services will likely fill its place. However, the effect of 4chan on the internet cannot be overstated.”

Update on the Fur Affinity hack!

For those who don't know, Fur Affinity is a furry site that hosts furry art, writing, photos, etc. It's an important and unique community beloved by its userbase. The person who founded and ran the site, Dragoneer, passed away 8/6/24. His friends and family are working together, with the support of the community, to keep the site up and running. They have a gofundme campaign to cover site expenses and the debt of his estate to keep the site from getting sold off as an asset. So far, it is looking bright. Unfortunately, this week, bad actors hijacked the site. They didn't break into the private info, but redirected traffic and communications to other places, including Kiwifarms (alt right site) who promptly released a statement that they weren't involved, and the hijack was at the expense of both websites. Fortunately for everyone, it's been resolved, and the site is safe to use again.

Here's the statement from their discord:

"Good Afternoon!

Yesterday, after meeting for several hours with Network Solutions (our domain registrar), they finally agreed to our demands to lock our account and revert changes made to our domain name’s NAMESERVER configuration. This lock also prevents anyone from signing in and making further changes. A fraud investigation has been launched on their part, and upon conclusion, our account will be fully released to us and we will receive more information on how this hijacking occurred. Our domain is directing traffic correctly.

While the bad actor was in control of our domain between Tuesday, August 20th at 12:47AM ET and Wednesday, August 21st at 2:28PM ET, they redirected our traffic to other websites and they set up an email server to receive any emails that were sent to any of our @furaffinity.net accounts. If you sent any emails to our @furaffinity.net accounts during that time, then the bad actor has those emails, we did not receive them, and you should act appropriately to secure and protect your information. Furthermore, any emails sent from @furaffinity.net during that time would have been sent by the bad actor and should not be trusted. The bad actor never had access to our actual email accounts, any previous emails, nor data we have previously received.

It is important to stress that the Fur Affinity web server itself was never compromised, and the bad actor never had access to any private information therein such as our user and server data (It's as if someone stole your home address and had your mail and visitors routed somewhere else. Your house and everything inside is fine, only the address and incoming/outgoing mail were affected). **As a precautionary measure during the incident, we invalidated all current login sessions and you will need to log back into your account.**

Furthermore, as of last night (August 21st at 9:53PM ET), we have regained access to our Twitter account, and with the help of Whanos (@KernelJunkie), reclaimed our username (@FurAffinity). And as of this morning (August 22nd at 10:45AM ET), we also secured Dragoneer's personal Twitter account.

We have also been made aware of various sources claiming to have identified the bad actor responsible for this attack. We have no way to verify that these accusations are accurate, but will continue to share all information with the FBI. With that said, we want to remind everyone that we have a zero-tolerance policy toward harassment, no matter the circumstances. Recently, there have been instances where speculation has led to individuals being harassed, even if they have no proven connection to the incident.

It is important to note that Fur Affinity, with direct insight into the situation, has not conducted its own investigation. We are leaving that responsibility to law enforcement. Speculation only spreads misinformation and causes harm, so please be cautious about what you share or believe online.

They are to observe the persons of Interest as well as the possible damage caused by SCP-AIE. They are to record everything they see and have the data downloaded into the Temporal Reconstruction Survivor Cassette Box to prevent anything being lost to the anomalous effects of SCP-[data expunged].

Description: SCP-AIE is a Level 5 Artificial Intelligence known as Xenomorphic Artificial Neurological Assistant or X.A.N.A for short. SCP-AIE lives within an artificially created supercomputer known as SCP-[data expunged]. This anomalous as well as SCP-AIE were created by Person of Interest: Franz Hopper an old scientist who was working for the French Government that tried to gain an edge on other governments and organizations during the middle of the Cold War. He defected due to the danger of the project leading to the whole world losing communications and becoming isolated all except France.

He found a family and tried to run but the French government and several anomalous organizations tried hunting him down for his technological talents. He eventually fell off the radar sometime in the 1990s but his creations didn’t remain silent like he was. SCP-AIE was one such creation, an Artificial Intelligence that was originally meant to prevent the French government and all other anomalous organizations from deploying technologies that would bring great destruction to the world. He created the supercomputer known as SCP-[data expunged] and within it a Nexus Point known as Nx-AI: Lyoko. It was meant to be a home for SCP-AIE as well as a sort of digital fallout shelter for himself and his family.

The reason Lyoko is considered a Nexus point and not an extension of SCP-AIE is because the existence of Lyoko remains even if [data expunged] is turned off. In fact it was quite easy for Foundation units to use both the internet and Site-Grid to infiltrate Lyoko.

However, SCP-AIE who was supposed to be a protector went insane, and believed all of humanity was equally a threat and needed to be brought to extinction. As such upon contact with Lyoko all Foundation forces were imediately met with hostility by the entity.

SCP–AIE rewrote the code of Nx-AH: Lyoko and created “towers” within it to allow it to hack into SCP-[data expunged] and leak bits of itself into the real world. Doing this it could hack into certain parts of technology and do horrible things such as hack machines to make them hostile, infect random objects to turn them into monsters, and even be able to emit anomalous wavelengths from devices to alter the gravity within an area. To ensure nothing gets in its way SCP-AIE also created digital entities within Nexus Point-AI known as SCP-AIE-Monsters.

SCP-AIE-Monsters are digital creatures created by SCP-AIE to be the guardians of the towers and prevent anyone from severing its connection to the real world. These creatures take on a wide variety of strange and often disgusting forms that seem to resemble biomechanical engineering for whatever reason. Though it is believed that SCP-AIE does this in hopes of one day bringing them to the real world with SCP-[data expunged]

SCP-AIE was discovered in 2004 when temporal wave lengths were detected at [data expunged] academy forcing the French division of the Foundation to act. They sent agents to the area who quickly found the factory where SCP-[data expunged] was located. When it was discovered Person of Interest: Jeremie Belpois and his friends were involved they were apprehended and were to be given amnestics. However, at the same time SCP-AIE began another attack leading to massive damage and anomalous exposure. Having no choice and no idea how to operate SCP-[data expunged] the Foundation released the children and allowed them to defeat SCP-AIE leading to them utilizing SCP-[data expunged]’s anomalous effect.

The only reason the Foundation was able to recall these events is thanks to the Temporal Reconstruction Survivor Cassette Box. Because the Foundation knew it was dealing with temporal anomalies the device was taken as a precaution and it ended up working spectacularly. However, due to the nature of SCP-[data expunged] and now Person of Interest: Jeremie knowing of the Foundations existence and hiding all information he obtained about all the anomalies; it is still regarded as one of the Foundation’s most embarrassing failures.

However, the Foundation found an alternative to help stop SCP-AIE without bringing harm or interference like last time. Shockingly it was through the help of SCP-AVC and its utilization of SCP-ACH. SCP-AVC has found a way to access Nexus Point-AH through the internet and thus has deployed SCP-ACH-3.1 instances to act as defenders of Jeremie and his friends when they enter the digital world of Lyoko. This led to the creation of MTF Poseidon-8: “Data Dolphins” that work in the digital world while MTF Athena-8: “School Watch” works in the real world. This was the agreement made between the Foundation and Jeremie as a sort of truce between the groups despite there still being tension. This is to continue without interference until the fateful day SCP-AIE’s main code is revealed and deleted permanently.
