fic rec friday
“That’s not fair.” Sirius was crying now, and Remus swiped his tears away with his thumb. “This isn’t fair. We haven’t had enough time. It’s not fair.”
“I know, love.” Remus leaned in for a kiss, and wondered if it would be the last. “I have loved you for sixty-two years, and it’s nowhere near enough.”
Or
Sirius loses his memories.
this is an angsty one folks!
so, i know that i usually recommend more fluffy works, i do, however, love this fic so very much and it's basically what it says in the summary
if you are in a place where you can do with an angsty fic right now i would highly rec this bitter sweet little story

Entry Three: Date November 23rd 1898
Things have not been going as planned in the past several days. My attempts in finding more about the biological functions of vampires, and specifically Dracula have come to a stand still, due to Dracula healing far too quickly for any head way to be produced. Trying to keep the incision open with forceps does nothing for the flesh will just heal around it, and cause the forceps to get stuck forcing it to be cut out, not very productive for either myself or Dracula.
I find myself frustrated by it, as I go down in an attempt to conduct a dissection, only to be thwarted in any attempt by the ridiculous regenerative ability. I am attempting to understand it, for when Dracula was staked, his body did not react in the same way, and in fact, that particular wound is still in the process of healing. I suspect it will leave quite the nasty scar behind when fully healed.
Back to the problem I have with not being to dissect the specimen, I wonder if an oil made from garlic or using tools made of silver would work better than the steel tools I am currently working with, for it does seem to slow when cuts are made with such instruments, though a butter knife is hardly the right instrument to conduct any kind of surgery with. On another note, I am quite surprised to find that Dracula seems to be able to feel pain, for when I first used the butter knife on him in a fit of scientific frustration, he seemed to hiss in pain, and tried to twitch away from the source. He also has displayed similar behaviors when my forceps have gotten stuck in his flesh, and are subsequently ripped out, though it is a lessened reaction compared to the butter knife made of silver.

THREE New Chapters for Lily Bell in the Thorn Thicket

Early holiday gift, I guess. I am having surgery tomorrow, so I probably can't start on the next few chapters until January, so I wanted to put these up on a happier note.
Chapter 24 is a bit dialogue heavy, but I hope you like it!
#squirrel and hedgehog#lily bell in the thorn thicket#Geumsaegi#Mulmangcho#Oegwipali#Bamsaegi#Juldarami#chapter 24 is a bit dark with the accusations#so fair warning#actually the other two are somewhat dark as well#but chapter 24 has hope and relief#commander darami#finally going to figure out what is going on with my lungs and throat

I think, perhaps one of the funniest things to come from EPIC popularising the Odyssey is that now a ton of people think Poseidon wanted to kill Odysseus.
In the Odyssey, Poseidon has no intention of killing Odysseus. In fact, part of the whole reason Zeus lets Poseidon do whatever he wants even though he thinks Odysseus is rad and should get to kiss his wife is explicitly because Poseidon had no intentions of killing Odysseus. Poseidon wanted to pay back the suffering/inconvenience blinding Polyphemus would have caused. It's a really abstract thing tbh. How do you pay back someone permanently disabling your son? Poseidon's solution was just to amputate Odysseus from his other half; i.e. Penelope. The end game was never murder, it was always an endurance race.

(Od. Book 1: Zeus reassuring Athena that he is not, in fact, a part of Odysseus Hater-Nation. Trans. Robert Fagles)
Also, for those wondering if there's any sort of in text reason for why Poseidon wasn't around in God Games - at the time in the Odyssey when Athena petitions Zeus to let Odysseus leave Calypso's island, Poseidon was -checks notes- on vacation in Ethiopia. Yep. He left to Ethiopia for a festival and thusly was very much absent for Athena's whole "please let Ody go? Please? 🥺" request.

(Od. Book 1: While Odysseus was suffering, Poseidon went to party in the east)
I am begging y'all to read the Odyssey. It's a comedy for everyone except Odysseus and Penelope who are, in fact, suffering 24/7 365.
#ginger rambles#ginger chats about greek myths#Sorry for the quality of the quotes but I'm too tired to google a pdf vers of the Odyssey and then edit those so y'all are getting#my crunchy pictures from one of my physical copies of the book lol#it's reiterated multiple times that Poseidon doesn't want Odysseus dead too#he is literally just driving him mad on the ocean because that's what Odysseus condemned Polyphemus to by blinding him#Also there's no good way to mention this but the Odyssey starts#by Zeus lamenting how mortals blame all their troubles and miseries on the gods when that's just not fair#because the gods go out of their way to warn the mortals that will be saddled with the most wretched fates#and they ignore the gods and do whatever they want anyway LMFAO#It's a really smart way to tie in the whole Orestes plot that would have wrapped up in between Odysseus getting stranded on Ogygia#and Odysseus getting off of Ogygia#epic the musical#epic the wisdom saga#zeus#athena#odysseus#poseidon#the odyssey

#umineko#umineko spoilers#ikuko hachijo#ikukos turn for a more serious piece... the old man has reigned for too long#now. INCREDIBLY LONG INCOHERENT TAGS RANT INCOMING FAIR WARNING HAS BEEN GIVEN:#it makes me so so sad how little discussion there is about specifically ikuko because imho she fits so neatly into a lot of the more#overarching Big Themes of the game in a way that i have not ever really seen people take notice of or point out in a meaningful way#like even just off of the top of my head. the significance of names and what it means to go by a name that's Not Yours (she has like 4+)#what it Means to be a witch how it represents a person's deepest insecurities and flaws & how its at its core a coping mechanism#the fact that it takes two to create a universe and trying to do it on your own anyways has the capacity to bring you intense misery#^ (how she's shown to be extremely dismissive of her own work and skill until a collaborator comes into her life and helps/encourages her)#and even the family/patriarchy/misogyny stuff that is so prevalent in the rest of the game comes back around to her. even her Only Friend#(young&stupid atp to be fair) remarks that shes Weird for being unmarried + the little she does say about her past invites the question of#to what extent her self-image stems from her family deeming her a freak outcast & effectively disowning her while celebrating her brothers#and i have lot in my mind about the witch thing specifically because i think her particular situation is very reflective of what umineko's#entire magic system and fantasy facet as a whole is meant to represent for an individual. from what little we see of (what is presumably)#her Real personality she is shown to be deeply self conscious in a way that is JARRINGLY diametrically opposed to both 1.) what we see in#featherine and 2.) what we see when she is acting as a Public Figure. because both of the above are very much purposeful acts that she is#putting on in order to obfuscate her true self. and i have always been very resolute & adamant about not totally equating her to featherine#not only because im very firmly in the camp of “featherine is the avatar of the Pen Name & tohya is part of her too” but also very much b/c#i feel very strongly that the stark differences between the two are very centrally relevant to her character & her psyche. as is the case#with most other witches featherine's personality traits serve to reveal/magnify a lot of ikukos inner workings by playing on her#insecurities/reversing them e.g. ikuko being very quick to downplay her skill/achievements becomes featherine being the COMPLETE opposite#to the point where she barely registers even other witches as living beings rather than just fun touys. BUT even though i do champion the#ikuko/featherine separation so hard i ALSO think it is purposefully relevant that at first glance the line between them seems so blurry#her introduction implying a more nebulous separation between her reality/fantasy counterpart is i think is an intentional move on her part#like it is part of the front she is putting up when acting as the Author. as opposed to Ikuko the person who we (in a way ironically very#similar to the way that the Real Battler is presumably only shown during the boatscene) only very briefly get to see take up screentime#which even on a meta level lines up very well with her apparent underlying nature as a like. extremely private largely reserved/shy person#hit tag limit but if by some miracle anyone is still reading this thank you... please see ikuko with the love she deserves... ok ily byeee

its funny because Percy has been spiraling ever since pjo and whenever he has a particularly bad episode you have other characters actively worried about it and you think to yourself surely they're going to intervene, surely someone is going to talk to him about it, and then like no one ever does lol
#I STILL HAVE NOT READ CHALICE#so maybe something's there#but I think Jason in boo was the closest thing we got (percy initiated the conversation)#but like... I still dont think Jason recognized/understood the extent to which percy was spiraling#and to be fair Jason was not present in tartarus so he wouldn't truly know but like#I dont think annabeth's approached the topic with him#at least not on a non superficial level#or if she did it happened offscreen#anyways#if percy deflects or loses it or whatever you can't say the warning signs weren't there lmao#pjo#percy jackson#mine

a/n. haven't written something as self-indulgent and self ship-coded as this in a while. been feeling worse than usual lately, and i've since identified one of the reasons for that being the graduation season looming over me :') as someone who can't finish uni because of my chronic illness, seeing my next batch of friends go and graduate is definitely a bittersweet experience that never stops being bittersweet, and is also something that i can't easily talk about with people in my life who are not going through the same thing. so i figured, why not write about it instead? i hope you enjoy this! (1.0k)
“and then i’m gonna go to the mall in a bit,” you finish, looking up from your laptop just in time to see bakugou walk towards your desk with a cup of coffee in hand, eyebrow raised in question.
“i’m gonna buy my friend her gifts,” you explain when he doesn’t say anything, opting to stand idly across from you instead. “you know, the one who’s graduating tomorrow?”
“yeah, i know the one,” he nods curtly, then: “you don’t want me to come with you?”
you hesitate for a moment before opening your mouth to say something, although by the time that you do, it’s already too late—bakugou has already gotten the message.
“i get it,” he nods again, toying with the little dynamight plushie you have by your clock. “you want your alone time.”
“it’s not that,” you start, half-lying, “i’m gonna go to some make-up stores and you’re gonna get bored.”
“i don’t get bored looking at you try stuff,” he corrects you without missing a beat, before taking a cautious sip of his beverage. “besides, you like having me around while you shop, remember? i scare away the sales ladies so that you get to browse in peace.”
“yeah, well—”
“it’s okay, dumbass,” bakugou huffs, the way he always does when he’s getting a bit exasperated. “you don’t have to pretend or some shit.”
“i’m not pretending,” you attest stubbornly, and when he only tosses you a knowing look: “ish.”
at that, bakugou snorts, reaching over to snap your laptop closed. you look up at him, your face contorted in a way that says, ‘what gives?’
the ash-blonde only shakes his head, before rounding your table and taking you by the wrist. you begrudgingly let yourself be pulled by him and into your living room, where he plops you down in your two-seater couch right next to him.
“talk,” he commands as soon as you’re face to face.
you frown. “i don’t have anything i want to say.”
“you look like you’re gonna implode,” bakugou retorts, leaning over to place his mug on the coffee table. “your therapy appointment’s not until tomorrow.”
“don’t remind me,” you grumble.
“well, someone’s got to,” he sighs, “or else you’re just gonna keep thinking until you’re gonna go crazy.”
“too late,” you quip, wringing your hands together, “i think i already have.”
“is it the graduation season?” bakugou asks instead, tone careful. you blanch at the inquiry, although you manage to school your expression quickly enough not to give yourself away.
and when you don’t say anything: “because if it is, then you’ve got to tell me. so that i can counter whatever bullshit your brain’s telling you.”
“it’s not that,” you shake your head, gaze downcast, “well—i mean, it kinda is. but it’s not the whole thing.”
“then, tell me the whole thing.”
“i’m tired, katsuki.”
“then talk to me tired. you don’t have to enunciate or make your voice loud or some shit,” he counters, and as if to further drive home his point, scoots over until your thighs and shoulders are touching before taking your hand in his and placing it on his lap.
“there,” he declares, satisfied, “now, talk.”
you sigh, letting him play with your hand. “what do you want me to talk about?”
“whatever you want. for example, how you feel about seeing your friends graduate.”
“i’m happy for them,” you immediately answer.
“but?”
you turn your head to look at him, frowning. “does there have to be a ‘but’?”
“no,” he responds calmly, massaging your palm, “but i can tell there’s something else.”
“what, like me being envious of them?”
bakugou grunts. “your words, not mine.”
“i’m not envious,” you retort defensively, angry that he’s wielding your words against you, although that anger quickly dissipates into exhaustion. “at least, i think i’m way past that.”
“where are you, then? if not at that point?”
“i don’t know,” you say lowly, shrugging lightly. “i guess i’ve stopped dreaming about what it’s like to finish my degree.”
you pause for a second, letting that sink in.
then, you bump your shoulder with his. “you’re disappointed, aren’t you?”
at that, bakugou whips to look at you, offense etched all across his sharp features. “hah?”
you lean back, chuckling dryly at your wisecrack. “you’re disappointed your girlfriend might be a dropout forever.”
“oh, fuck off, y/n.”
that makes you bark out a laugh, while bakugou’s scowl only deepens.
“stop it,” he demands when you don’t stop laughing, quaking in your mirth. “i said stop it, y/n.”
“i know, i know,” you cackle, “i’m sorry.”
“you’ve gotta stop talking shit about yourself like that,” he gripes when you finally manage to put a lid on your laughter, muscled arms crossed petulantly in front of his broad chest.
“i’m not,” you argue, smiling. “i’m just telling the truth.”
“yeah, well, fuck that,” he spews, shooting you a dirty look. “my girlfriend’s the smartest woman i know, so it doesn’t fucking matter if she finishes college or not.”
“why, thank you,” you laugh again, “although your insulting tone kinda juxtaposes the very nature of your statement.”
“and you’re just further proving my statement by using fancy words such as juxtaposition,” he rebuts, side-eye viciously unrelenting.
“you’re serious, though?” you find yourself asking after the air falls into a lull, with neither of you uttering a word.
bakugou glances at you, still frowning. “serious about what?”
“that you think i’m the smartest woman you know.”
“not only the smartest woman, dumbass,” he huffs again, shaking his head. “smartest person.”
“okay, now you’re just gassing me up.”
“i’m just telling the truth,” he shrugs, putting his hands up in mock surrender. “and you better fucking believe it.”
“i honestly don’t think i can,” you say truthfully, before flashing him a shy smile anyway. “but i’ll try.”
“you better,” he spits aggressively, before, muttering under his breath so softly you barely miss it: “…the fucking prettiest, too.”

I'm currently reading Eavesdropping on Jane Austen's England: How Our Ancestors Lived Two Centuries Ago by historians Roy and Lesley Adkins and it's a very well researched and informative book, which I highly recommend if you already know a lot about Jane Austen's life and works, but want to understand the context of her novels and how society functioned at the time.
I have to share this passage from the chapter about childbirth, which details a naval officer's response to learning that his wife had given birth while he was away at sea... because it made me think of a certain Austen couple:
It was not unusual for fathers to be absent from home when their children were born, and it took some time for the news to reach William Wilkinson, at sea in the navy, that he was a father. Finally he held the letter that his sister-in-law Fanny Platt had excitedly written from their lodgings at Kensington in London, a few hours after his daughter's birth. 'Heartily do I wish you were now here,' she said, that we might congratulate with each other on the happy arrival of your little daughter. It was born at 17 minutes past 9 o'clock this 9th day of Nov [1807].' Fanny next gave William an affectionate description: 'the precious Babe, [she] is, I think, the loveliest little creature I ever saw. [Her] eyes are dark and beautifully bright, [her] nose and chin we all agree in our opinion as to their being exactly like your own. [She] has a pretty little head with a good bit of hair, which is very dark. [She] is in good health and so plump you cannot think.' William was extremely happy, and early the next year he wrote to his wife: 'in my Prayer Book (which I keep in my desk) I have your hair, Baby's and a piece of my own. I cut mine off the other day to see the contrast. They are all in a small piece of fine India paper... and they do look very pretty, yours light, mine dark, and Baby's between both.'
After reading this, now I can't stop thinking about Captain Wentworth cutting off a piece of his hair and placing it next to a lock of Anne's hair (that he brought to sea with him so she'd be with him in some way) and a piece of their newborn baby daughter's hair!
It hurts to imagine them separated for such an important moment but if duty called and Wentworth was forced to go away, this is exactly how I imagine he would deal with the separation.
#persuasion#captain wentworth#anne elliot#jane austen#history#regency history#cora reads#ughhhh so sweet 🥹#also in the original quote by fanny she called the baby 'it' and indeed the passage from the book had an explanation that 'it' was normal#language back then and not cold or unfeeling but i just swapped the pronouns in for clarity#very good book though! tbh i feel like they maybe aren't enormously into jane austen as the quotes from her novels are minimal#and the references to her life are sporadic BUT it's basically a history book exclusively tailored to her era. which is my heaven#it's also very well researched. i am really enjoying it!!#and if you know enough about austen and her novels then you can sort of fill in the gaps yourself#but fair warning it has some less glamorous details about the era. like how men would sometimes pee in the corner of ball-rooms#and everyone would've smelled quite strongly bc of how little they bathed. mmmmmm . delicious !#i just started reading the mill on the floss by george eliot but i think when it's over i'll re-read persuasion because it's been TOO LONG#and i love them so much
