References in the older generation of demon hunters from the movie KPOP DEMON HUNTERS

It is not the BEST animated movie of all time but it got all the little Korean cultural references that feel like it is catering to me....in particular I really loved the narration sequence of how the Demon Hunters came to be!!! So I decided to make a post about it

The first generation of demon hunters we see are set in the 조선 (Chosun) era, which is a VERY common place to start for a lot of Korean media. There are no specific singers/performers they are referring to here, but they are based on 무당 (mudang). Korean female shamans. There are male shamans as well but those are not as well known and not popular. That is why the boy band Saja Boys are based on 저승사자 (Jeosung Saja) aka Korean underworld magistrate/grim reaper.

Anyway the mudang have various roles in Korean paganism/spiritualism. Instead of flashy musical numbers with weapons, they perform 굿 (gut), rituals that vary by region and function.

The second generation of hunters we see have the flapper girl aesthetic (American 1920s fashion) which was popular in Korea around the 1960-70s. This also is probably shouting out to the og Korean "girl group" aka the Kim Sisters (김시스터스) of the 1950-60s. They might not have been the MAIN influence but the trio singer composition and their fame for being popular among US troops in Korea (which launched their career in the US) doesn't feel like just coincidence.

The third generation we see has the Korean 1970s to maybe super early 80s aesthetic. I couldn't think/find any trio girl groups during this time, but they feel like a mix of The Pearl Sisters (펄 시스터즈), Lily Sisters (릴리 시스터즈) and Kye Eunsook (계은숙). Not the most confident with this one. Thanks to a kind bsky person, it does seem like it was MOSTLY based on the Pearl sisters, esp if you look at an old video of their performance.

The fourth generation is the 1980s, which is when the word "k-pop" starts being used to describe the songs. BUT MAN, THIS SET PISSES ME OFF BECAUSE WHY ARE THEY ALL DIFFERENT 80S KPOP STYLES? COORDINATE GIRLS!!! Again no specific girl groups jump out at me but looks like this is a reference to Settorae (세또래, aka "The three friends") seen by their performance video, which capture similar vibes.

The fifth and final generation we see before Rumi/Mira/Zoey are STRONG 90s K-POP. The whole aesthetic of stars and the hairstyles SCREAMS S.E.S which is one of the classic 90s kpop girl groups of the time.

In particular their appearance for the music video "Dreams Come True" comes to mind. The video now feels really dated but back in the day, the effects and stuff they used were the HOT SHIT. Extremely nostalgic Korean media

And ofc we got the modern trio, which I won't really comment on because they are mix of the current (2010s to 2020s) kpop and I feel like the current fans will have better knowledge of this than I about it. so that's it for now! Of course there may be some other stuff I missed or got wrong possibly, which I will fix if anything comes up. Feel free to correct me as well in the replies!

Update 6/26/25: I think people got confused on what I was trying to cite in terms of time period for the hunters. If we go by strict fashion sense it definitely harks earlier decades of AMERICAN HISTORY. But I am looking at all of this thru a Korean lens so some of the recognizeable early American fashion were popular during different times in Korea specifically. Feel free to reblog/comment the fashion refs bc that in itself is interesting too.

And speaking of fashion, I do really like how each of them have the iridescent accents on their outfits, which are reminescent of Najeonchilgi (나전칠기), the Korean art of inlaid mother of pearl pieces on furniture, jewlery, etc.

Recently Vivienne posted a new character with Emily and Sera on her social media account, as I think you might have also noticed.

Adam's son Abel is gonna be shown in season 2 of Hazbi Hotel, and I want to know your thoughts on him.

I personally think he wouldn't be an antagonist character like his father(Adam), considering his kind looking smile and face. On the other hand, Adam was just giving off a clear antagonist vibe by his headress (horns and evil grin and all). I feel like Abel would agree with Emily's thoughts and also help Charlie achieve her dreams of helping sinners' redemption.

What kind of role do you think Abel would play throughout the upcoming season?

If they're going to have his characterization be close to the Abel in the Bible, then i highly doubt he'd be the bad guy. He was God's favorite! Tho if they want a twist, there's also that fact that in the bible Abel sacrificed one of his beloved lambs as a gift to God as a testament of his love for Him(as opposed to Cain who only offered crops that he had no attachment to). There's certain ways you can use a character trait like that for antagonistic actions, but eh. I dont have too much of a high hope for that. I dont think I'd want that route either.

What I do want is for Abel to form some kind of(non-romantic) relationship with Lute. Aside from the fact that they're both mourning Adam, I'd like to see parallels drawn between Lute and Vaggie's rivalry and Cain and Abel's tragic brotherhood.

So if you're not familiar with Genesis, in their part of the Bible, Cain and Abel were both sons of Adam and Eve. Abel was the one favored by God, and Cain found this unfair and was very envious of his younger brother, to the point where he ends up murdering him. On the other hand, Lute and Vaggie were both angels under Adam's command. Although the brief flashback has us implying Lute attacked Vaggie due to the demon she spared, I really wont be surprised if she happened to be envious/threatened by the fact that Adam favored Vaggie in any kind of way too.

Since he's literally humanity's first murder victim, I'd really like to know his thoughts about the Extermination and Lute's bloodthirst. I'd like a scene of him attempting to reel Lute in, warning her how he'd seen the same look in his brother's eyes before and how it consumed him.

You know this one song number from Tangled the series? I'd like something like this with them(yes, that's Lucifer's VA. Yes the VA for the lady also gives off Lute vibes. That's probably because both of their VAs have played Elphaba in Broadway)

It's Black History Month and, tell me why, I stumbled upon a fic for Arcane that features the brutalization of black women (Mel and Sky), stealing/harvesting of their organs and bodies for the use of men (and a white man at that), and just all around stuff that is very reminiscent to how black women are/have been treated throughout medical history for decades? Mind you, it was used to fuel the JayVik ship too, makes me sick. If it wasn't some in that fandom fantasizing Mel being SA'd, then it's this. I can't with this fandom.

Gabriel is seemingly canon (?) to the lore of Pressure

I was on the Official Pressure wiki and while I was browsing around I found something. An angel is mentioned who was captured by Urbanshade and kept locked up and used as a source of blood. What is notable is that the Flesh Prison and possibly the suicide trees from the Violence layer are mentioned, as well as a modified railgun called Heavenpiercher.

If you're having trouble seeing the screenshots here it is written as well as the link to the wiki page itself.

"In 2007, Urbanshade opened a gateway to the Banlands, prompting the "Banlands Expedition" lead by the N.O.S.T sub-division. There, they encountered the Guardian Angel of the Banlands. Seeing it as an enemy, Urbanshade fought the angel and heavily wounded it after shooting it with the Heavenpiercher, a modified mobile railgun. During the fight however, Urbanshade employee River died after giving his all during the fight. To honor his name, a Trenchbleeder would soon to be named after him. After the encounter with the Guardian Angel, the Devil seemingly pleased with Urbanshade, made a deal with them. The Devil promised that Urbanshade employees that went to hell would be spared from treeification, a process where one's soul gets turned into trees. In addition, the Devil carved the pentagram into the eye of God, publicly referred as the Moon, as an act of desecration, thus preventing God from being able to peer into the Banlands to monitor it. The desecrated side of the Moon is only viewable from the Banlands, while the people on Earth only sees the other side which is normal.

After deeming the Banlands unprofitable for Urbanshade, all further expedtions to it have been deemed unnecessary. The heavily wounded Guardian Angel was taken back to the Blacksite, along with a Flesh Prison and some treeified people found during the expedition. Using the Alicron, Urbanshade would harvest the blood of the angel for an unholy benefit: once someone drinks a cup of angel blood, every sin would be obliterated from their body, sending them to heaven instead of hell on death. This would be saved only for employees retiring from Urbanshade. Despite this, no amount of angel blood can help Mr. Shade, as his soul was deemed too impure."

While there isn't a source on the wiki for this information the Guardian Angel of the Banlands IS mentioned in the Trenchbleeder document when explaining where Trenchbleeder River got its name so that part is canon.

The Heavenpiercher railgun is also mentioned in another in-game document for Paranoia's Box so that gun existing is also canon.

It's very likely this information is intended to be canon due to all the references to it in-game and also considering the fact its an official wiki and not an unofficial one.

TL;DR a guardian angel (presumably Gabriel because of all the Ultrakill references in the banlands) was taken by Urbanshade and kept as a prisoner so they could harvest his blood to remove sins from people.

Typing Tips That I Stumbled Upon Randomly:

The Ctrl key lets you jump between words really quickly. If you hold Ctrl and press the left or right arrow keys, instead of moving your cursor 1 character you'll move it a whole word; if you want to edit that word that's 3 words back, you can just hold Ctrl and left-left-left, and you're there.

Even more useful in my opinion, if you hold Ctrl and press Backspace you'll delete the entire word you're on. That's just really nifty because a lot of the time when you're deleting you want to delete the whole word, so this is much faster.

Also, idk how well-known this is but holding Shift and moving your cursor will make you highlight any characters you move over. That's useful on its own, but combining that with Ctrl lets you quickly highlight whole words or sentences, so you can easily copy+paste them. You can also hold Shift to edit any selections you made with your mouse or something.

Also it took me too long to realize that the Home and End keys are actually really nice sometimes. Home takes you to the start of the line you're on, and End takes you to the end. Hold Shift while doing that and you can highlight the whole line. Very nice for programming. Also holding Ctrl and pressing Home or End takes you to the top or bottom of the page, but I barely use that.

A similarly useful key that I also overlooked is the Delete key. It's like the Backspace key, but it deletes the character in front of your cursor instead of behind it. Just like with Backspace Ctrl+Delete lets you delete a whole word in front of your cursor.

Also Ctrl+A lets you highlight the whole page.

Also even when you're not typing and instead just browsing a web page or something, you still technically have a cursor; if you click a piece of text, then hold Shift and press the arrow keys, you'll start highlighting text.

Practice Exercise: Click on the t in this word, then hold Shift and press left and right on the arrow keys! Now try holding Ctrl+Shift while you press the arrow keys! Hold Shift and press Home or End! Hold Shift and use your mouse to left-click on different spots in the paragraph and see how your selection changes!

I'm currently sailing the oh so rough seas that is exam time, so I'm going to be away for a bit longer. I just once again have to express how happy I am every time i see interactions with this blog, even though I've been very inactive recently. It really has helped strengthen and keep up my resolve in wanting to help make digital privacy, piracy and computer knowledge more accessible for as many as I can. I've been considering if there would be any interest in me trying to create a more in-depth resource for finding ways to improve your quality of live when using computers and the like?

While my first thought was a simple list, I know that those can get overwhelming really quick. So I've been playing around with the idea of a "clippy"-like addon to the blog that can offer you directions to common issues (such as, "How do i remove the 'search on the web' results on Windows 10?", "What browser-addons should I have?" and "How to speed up YouTube on FireFox?"). I think I would also want to have it be accessible through a GitHub-page, so that mobile-users also could easily access it, and so you all have other options than to only have it accessed through a Tumblr blog.
