DP x DC: The Most Dangerous Card Game

Ok so Danny has essentially claimed earth as his. And he is fully aware that there are constant threats to the planet. Now he can’t stop a threat that originates on earth (that’s something he’ll leave to the Justice league) but he can do something about outside threats. Doing some research on ancient spells, rituals, and artifacts, he cast a world wide barrier on the planet to protect it from hostile threats so they cannot enter. This will prevent another Pariah Dark incident. However, barriers like this come at a price. You see, there are two ways to make a barrier. Either make one powered up by your own energy and power (which would be constantly draining) or set up a barrier with rules. The way magic works is that nothing can be absolutely indestructible. It must have a weakness. The most powerful barriers weren’t the ones reinforced with layer after layer of protective charms and buffed up with power. Those could eventually be destroyed either by being overpowered, wearing them down, or by cutting off the original power source. No, the most powerful barriers were the ones with a deliberate weakness. A barrier indestructible except for one spot. A cage that can only be opened from the outside. Or that can only be passed with a key or by solving a riddle. So Danny chooses this type of barrier and does the necessary ritual and pours in enough power to make it. And he adds his condition for anyone to enter. 

Now the Justice league? Find out about the barrier when Trigon attempts to attack, they were preparing after he threatened what he would do once he got to earth. How he would destroy them. The Justice league tried to take the fight to him first but were utterly destroyed, so they retreated home to tend to their injuries, and fortify earth for one. Last. Stand. Only when Trigon makes his big entrance…he’s stopped.

The Justice league watch in awe as this thin see-through barrier with beautiful green swirls and speckled white lights like stars apears blocking Trigon and his army’s advance. The barrier looks so thin and fragile yet no matter how hard the warlord hits, none of his attacks can get through and neither can he damage said barrier. That’s when Constantine and Zatanna recognizes what this barrier is. Something only a powerful entity could create. For a moment, the league is filled with hope that Trigon can’t get through yet Constantine also explains that it’s not impenetrable. And clearly Trigon knows this too for he calls out a challenge. 

And that’s when, in a flash of light, a tiny glowing teenager appears. He looked absolutly minuscule compared to Trigon and yet practically glowed with power (this isn’t a King Danny AU though).

And that is when the conditions for passing the barrier are revealed. And the Justice realize that the only thing stopping Trigon and his army from decimating earth. The only way he can get through….is by beating this glowing teenager in a card game. 

Not just any card game though. The most convoluted game Sam, Danny, and Tucker invented themselves. It’s like the infinite realms version of magic the gathering, combined with Pokémon, and chess. And Danny is the master. So sit down Trigon and let’s play.

After Danny wins, this happens a few more times with outer word beings and possibly even demons attempting to invade earth, yet none have been able to beat the mysterious teenager in a card game. Constantine might even take a crack at it and try to figure out how to play. He’s really bad though. Every time this happens, the Justice league worry that this might be the time the teenager looses. Yet every time, he wins (even if only barely). 

Meanwhile, Danny, Sam, and Tucker have gotten addicted to the game and play it almost daily. Some teachers might seem them playing the game are are like ‘awww how cute’ not realizing this game is literally saving the world. Jazz is just happy they aren’t spending as much time on their screens playing Doomed.

So I've said multipe times now (here and here) that thinking nmj is just so blinded by privilege he doesn't undertand that acting out of line gets people killed is, in my opinion, a misunderstanding of his character that ignores the part where he's, you know, actively dying the whole time and thinks that's a good thing. But that doesn't mean I don't think privilege plays no role at all in how he views the world.

Specifically, his view that death (at least premature or violent death) means something.

Death isn't always a tragedy to NMJ, but it is always meaningful. If you kill an evil dangerous person for your righteous cause, that death had meaning. There was evil in the world and now there is less of it. Similarly, if you die in the pursuit of your righteous cause, that death has meaning, because the sheer dedication you gave to it that you were willing to die for it will further that cause, and your bretheren will be invigorated by your sacrifice to fight even harder.

If a death isn't meaningful, that's an injustice and it is up to the living to give it meaning. That's what cuts so deep about his father's murder. There were no consequences, no changes, no meaning. Wen Ruohan was just going to get away with it! He fights and wins an entire war to make it mean something, to make it so that the unjust murder of Nie Mingjue's father is part of Wen Ruohan's downfall.

But this is a view he can only hold because he's the kind of person who's death will be meaningful. Most ordinary people's deaths are meaningless. Not ontologically, not inherently, but they are made meaningless because no one cares. For death to be meaningful you either have to be so powerful that anything you risk your life for will be impacted in some way. (Like, say, if you sacrifice a long life for immense martial power in a faustian bargain with a blade) Or if people with that kind of power care enough about you to do so for you. For most people, this isn't true. A starving street kid has no power to change the unfair world that put them there, even if they risk their life trying, and no one will do it for them once they die.

Nie Mingjue knows this in abstract, and of course rightfully believes it's wrong. But all that does is make it yet another righteous cause people should be willing to die for. Everyone's deaths should mean something, we'll make it so or die trying!

This is what the conflict between nieyao is about at its core. Because Jin Guangyao, fundamentally, cannot conceive of his own death as meaningful. Nie Mingjue grew up around powerful men who could change the world but refuse to do so because god forbid they risk a single hair on their perfect heads. Meng Yao, on the other hand, grew up in an environment where no one of importance would blink twice if you died. He was surrounded by meaningless death. Indeed his entire early life is defined by that lack of care.

Meng Shi dies and no one cares. Meng Yao gets thrown off a flight off stairs and no one cares. He has to be the one to do the caring, and once he's gone no one else will do it for him.

So he has to live.

Jin Guangyao eventually gets far enough that he actually does aquire the power to change some things... as long as he's alive. If he changes too much, holds on too tightly to his ideals, he'll die and it'll all be for nothing. He can't sacrifice himself for his goals because doing so would immediately render those goals unobtainable. No one will care about what he tried to do. He won't be a heroic sacrifice, he'll just be trash that finally cleaned itself up.

And well... Nie Mingjue dies, and someone makes it mean something. Makes it mean so much that the entire story of mdzs would not exist without it. Jin Guangyao dies and it doesn't mean anything. Most people are glad to be rid of him, and the few that are not don't do anything to change that.

re the anti-resurrection poison though like. what the fuck was up with that. Like, I can, as a mediocre DM myself and an avid listener to NADDPod D&D Court understand where it came from: you needed a reason why Will and Derrig were still dead despite Keyleth being there, because that was Orym's backstory, which in turn dated back to Liam's concept for a backup character for Vax, ie, someone who had also lost a partner and would be sent to help Keyleth in the wake of a similar loss. So you come up with the anti-resurrection poison. And this also happens to work out nicely for the climactic solstice battle, because it explains why Keyleth can't just rally after Vax intervenes. It also makes sense as a thing the Ruby Vanguard would have, because of the anti-divine magic and the way that the Weave Mind have similar anti-healing powers.

The problem is, of course, that you've introduced this concept - which is, again, actually very good and elegant and fits in seamlessly - but it's out there and you have to either use it or come up with an excuse not to use it. And you can, I think, legitimately make a case for it not being in play in the Seat of Disdain fight because that came up very suddenly. But then it gets pretty weird that when Bells Hells become a consistent thorn in the Vanguard's side, and Otohan moves from "I need to keep the Ruidusborn alive but fuck everyone else" to "I'm just going to kill them all" and clearly knows they have considerable resurrection resources and access to the rare antidote given Keyleth's return to the stage that she doesn't just coat all weapons with it and nerf all healing to drain their resources.

And anyway this is a consistent problem, of like, there actually was the full setup for the story C3 intended to tell in C1 and C2 and early C3, but to make these entirely unrelated characters actually fit into a pretty specific narrative, you had to add in a bunch of complicated additions. And while some of those were a mess, some were actually really well done, like the initial introduction of the anti-resurrection poison and the gray assassins, and then none of it mattered because they were always just additions to make the core plot fit and there were too many balls in the air so they got dropped without exploration, and anyone paying attention was like "hey you dropped this" and it's like you could have juggled 3 or even 4 or 5 balls adequately, but you had to add in 4 extra balls and ultimately some of them landed on the ground and so the act of barely keeping 3 in the air in the end is undercut by the number you dropped.

Jeremy and Jean have sex. They experiment in a thousand ways, but it's seven months before Jean fucks Jeremy for the first time.

After that, the lines blur a bit, and everything is crazy. They're delighted, in love, and excited.

Jeremy invites Jean on a trip two years into their relationship. Jeremy wanted to show up with the plane tickets already in his hands as a gift, but he doesn't because he wants Jean to decide where they're going (although Jeremy already knows because he knows Jean).

In France, they rent a house for three weeks and live there quietly, exploring everything. They're wary of paparazzi, but they immerse themselves in local life with crazy enthusiasm (at least on Jeremy's part).

Jeremy is absolutely delighted, trying everything and proudly practicing his French with everyone. They take thousands of photos, send postcards, and buy magnets from every small town. They travel along the French coast with backpacks and return to that house five days later.

Jeremy looks at every little thing with shining eyes. Jean stares at Jeremy openly. Jeremy asks him what he's looking at. Jean doesn't answer, but keeps looking.

When they get back home, they have sex in the entryway, right after they close the door. It's dirty and desperate. Luckily, they have lube in one of their backpacks, and Jean has no trouble lubing Jeremy up before pressing him against the door. Jeremy didn't want to wait, immersed in one of those rare moments when he loses control, but Jean refuses to do anything without lube.

When they're done, they shower lazily and go to bed, exhausted.

Hours later, Jean silently wakes Jeremy.

"Jean?" Jeremy asks.

Jean doesn't answer, but Jeremy knows what he wants when he looks at him like that. He smiles and kisses him. Jean caresses him until the reaction comes.

Jeremy understands when Jean asks him to put his hands on top of his head, grab the headboard, and hold on. Jeremy wants to help and touch Jean, but he knows he shouldn't, so he just watches and flatters him in French.

When Jean mounts him, Jeremy forgets his name and how to speak English. He only speaks French. Jeremy didn't know he could be so eloquent in French. He seems to be saying something silly because Jean laughs at one point, and then he grabs Jeremy's hands on the headboard and keeps them there, firmly gripped, while he does whatever he wants to Jeremy.

Jeremy begs in French because Jean is playing with him. Jean is a huge, muscular French man who could split Jeremy's pelvis if he wanted, the cross bouncing off his chest with every jerk.

Jeremy loves it.

Jeremy could have Jean like this for a lifetime if he weren't just a weak man.

Jean is very, very pleased with Jeremy's pleas, his bright eyes, and his strong body beneath him, bending exactly the way Jean wants, obedient and warm.

Jean lets go of Jeremy's hands and lets himself go, masturbating with one hand while riding him and inserting two fingers between Jeremy's teeth, holding his head against the pillow, gentle but authoritative. He knows Jeremy isn't going to bite him. He never would. Having Jeremy's teeth gently press against his fingers without fear of being bitten does something to him, and Jean allows (because Jeremy asks permission in garbled, erratic French, like the good, magnificent partner he is) Jeremy to grab his hips to help him finish.

When Jean comes, and Jeremy does seconds later, a feeling of liberation like he's never felt in his life courses through Jean's body. He floats on a cloud, dazed, feeling similar to finishing a match as the victor, but infinitely more satisfying. He isn't afraid of falling because he knows Jeremy is there, so he lets himself go quietly and falls asleep with one arm draped over his chest. He can't process what Jeremy says in his own language before closing his eyes.

When they return to California, the change in Jean is noticeable. More open, calmer, more relaxed, as if he'd lost 100 pounds.

When they return to California, Jeremy buys a ring.

Team 7 all thinking the other is Kakashi's favourite is OUT. It's tired, it's done, it's passé.

You know what's fresh and new and exciting? All of Team 7 being quietly convinced that they are Kakashi's specialest snowflake. They don't ever say it to the other two because they think it'll hurt their feelings but inside? Oh, they're so smug about it.

Every time they have a fight with each other, they're all thinking of launching the Ultimate Attack of I'm-Sensei's-Favourite-and-You-Know-it-and-You're-Jealous no jutsu, but they stop themselves like no, I mustn't, it'll destroy them, I must be gracious, it's not their fault Sensei loves me most.

Except... they're...all thinking it.

There's something so poetic about how El is the centre of all the chaos, wanted by the government and military and Mike is her strong calm that doesn't hesitate to get sucked into her storm and stand by her side in the face of any conflict. Like guys. This little boy did not hesitate to protect her and stand off in the face of the government to defend her, going against all the typical patriotic rule-following norms of an American Suburbanite Middle class nuclear family. He comes from pure safe normalcy but doesn't hesitate to run in the other direction heading towards chaos and danger if it means she's there... because he feels safest with her and is driven by the instinct to protect her. 😭🩷 There's something so beautiful and inspiring about someone as hurt and troubled and chaotic as El being loved in such a simple, unconditional way. Mike doesn't see her for the chaos she represents which surrounds her, he sees her for the innocent goodness that she actually is— her calm, gentle demeanour and the warmth it makes him feel. He understands that all the danger that comes with being with her is through no fault of her own, and actively works to help combat all the forces against her. He knows that despite being the centre of the chaos she's not the cause of it, she's the remedy for the effect of it and that is an undeserved, exhausting punishment yet a burden she bears regardless without complaint— a sign of her innate goodness which Mike recognises and loves her for all the more. Even moreso, he works to share that burden with her and criticise it because he sees how innocent and undeserving she is of the responsibility infringed upon her. His willingness to take all of this on is so wholesome and exactly the kind of sweet effort-full love that a character like El deserves, which is so gratifying for the audience to see.

Honestly despite my feelings about how the last arc of MHA went down I really love Deku and his story.

I just feel like a lot of the time we get these protagonists whose whole philosophy is it doesn’t matter what you were born as everyone can achieve greatness. But then the series goes on and it turns out that actually it DOES matter because the protagonist has this really great lineage and these really great powers you can only have through birth they were actually born born, predestined if you will, to do this.

But MHA actually sticks to its guns. Midoriya wasn’t revealed to have some great connection to all might that the universe had put in place. He wasn’t defended from some great lineage that makes him uniquely suited to this. Hell All for one didn’t even turn out to be his father, there was no hidden powerful quirk he was always meant to have. He was just Midoriya Izuku a boy who was in the right place at the right time and simply decided to act while the world did nothing. And that’s what really made him a hero.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I believe him a bit more when he goes anybody can be a hero if you just decide to act

the HC for Lionheart is that he is born sickly and smaller than his sister (HC: and a possible dead littermate) which causes Swiftbreeze to invoke the Lion- name, with Featherwhisker's blessing, and he makes a full recovery; ThunderClan has more of a 'this name will bring good luck/a bright future' view of the ancient names compared to Shadow and WindClan who are superstitious of it and see is as an exchange, something must be taken back by the ancient cats. Lionheart is set for deputyship once Bluestar picks him, but the curse comes back to haunt him when he is killed by ShadowClan- his death leads to Tigerclaw's deputyship and all... that. Lionblaze already suffers a somewhat traumatic birth (Leafpool struggles to deliver him) so she uses Lion- when she sees he is not breathing and panics to revive him. The downfall is his power, and losing his power, which defined him. I also like to think he was destined to die in the Last Hope Battle but his power over the stars let him dodge death.
