I've been planning this illustration for over a month now - in April, I had the patreon folks vote on a theme for a big gravity falls print, and camping was the winner. Even just planning the general composition took a while, figuring out where I wanted all the characters to be. Once I shored up a good thumbnail, I made it tighter twice before putting it on paper, and working in pencil. The pencil drawing part took me four sit down sessions of drawing, and then coloring the scan took another couple of days. I worked SO DANG HARD to finish this monster before mc3, and by some miracle, I did.

Overall, I'm really happy with how this illustration turned out! I feel like it does a good job of expressing my love for the show. I'm really glad people were enthusiastic about it at the convention - I had a lot stop and look at it with these really awestruck, sad wet goo goo eyes expressions LOL! They did this: 🥺 with an actual human face dskjhlsdfkjh!!

FINALLY finished the art piece that goes along with ch 1 of my GF fic "Papa Bear" where Stan teaches Soos a few boxing moves.

it came to me in a dream. (I've been binge watching gravity falls and my TDI obsession runs deep....)

lots of characters have been targeted by gravity falls fans's thirst for angst but I feel like I've never really seen Soos involved, at least not as much.

anyway. thinking about Soos and his family.

Abuelita's wonderful, sure, and she tries her hardest to be a parental figure to Soos. but she's still his grandmother. sometimes he feels guilty for wishing he had a parent again. Abuelita dedicated her life to raising him, but it's just... not the same.

then he gets something of a parental figure after getting hired by the local scam artist. Soos can tell he has a good heart buried somewhere under his contempt for rules and sentimentality and his business built on fleecing people. heck, Stan's taught him how to box, and let him hang around at the Mystery Shack after hours when he didn't feel like walking back home and Abuelita couldn't pick him up just yet, back before he could drive himself. which Stan also had a role in.

then the kids show up. Soos quickly becomes fond of them. they didn't need to fight an epic time battle to endear themselves to him, but they do it anyway, because they love him, because they're family. and it's almost enough for him to let go of the first person he thought of as a father. almost.

he turns against the second person he thought of as a father. for the kids.

and probably by next summer, Stan's softened up a bit. even that first summer, he was always soft for the kids. Soos can't blame Stan for that; he's soft for them too. but as much as he hates to admit it, he's jealous of Dipper and Mabel. they'll spend the rest of their childhood with a Stan in their lives who's less afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve and scoop them up into a bear hug. and he can't help but wish he could have gotten that side of Stan when he was still small enough to be held like that.

sure, he's glad that Stan trusts him with the Shack, glad that he can give back to Abuelita by moving her in with him, glad to have Dipper and Mabel back for the summer to do more dumb things together, but there's always going to be a piece missing. and he's not sure it can ever really be patched over.

I'm taking a moment to share this part from yesterdays fiddlestan animatic. I had to ask myself how these old farts would stand up from a sitting position. Note Fidds arm on stans leg for support. Stan crossing his legs Dad Style. Fidds hand on his fucked up old man back.

But these frames combined lasted... barely a second. And I put way too much effort into them. So I'm making you look at them now sdkjskfksfjhdk

Ford and 9/11

This is such an overdone joke but genuinely who told Ford, and how long did it take somebody to tell him? Did people just forget to tell him anything that happened in the 30 years that he was gone? We know at some point somebody told him about 9/11, but did anybody tell him about Obama or The Challenger?

That begs another question: How does Ford find out? Because you'd think that Stan would tell him, but what I think would be more likely is Wendy makes a 9/11 joke (she seems like the kind of person, I don't know how to describe it) and Ford is just so utterly confused, and concerned. So somebody has to go through the painstaking process of explaining how "They hit the FUCKING PENTAGON!" I also like the idea of Stan and Ford visiting Jersey and just not seeing the towers anymore, and Ford is like "Where.. where are they, Stanley? Where did they go..?!" Realistically though, Stan likely just sat him down and told him. Funnier solution: Mabel makes a glittery presentation and picture of the plane hitting the towers.

And how long did it take for them to tell Ford? Well, seeing as the show takes place and ends on August 31st. 9/11's anniversary hadn't happened yet. So, I can see Stan sitting Ford down ON 9/11 to teach his good ol' brother a lesson on terrorist attacks.
