Writing Notes: Red String of Fate

Yīnyuán Hóngxiàn (姻緣紅線/姻缘红线)

Also known as the Red String of Fate or Red Thread of Marriage.

An East Asian belief originating from Chinese Mythology.

In the Chinese mythos, the string is tied around both parties' ankles.

Akai Ito or Unmei No Akai Ito (運命の赤い糸)

The red string of fate is also frequently found in Japanese works.

The concept is that two people who are destined to be together are attached by an invisible red string tied by the Yuè Xià Lǎorén (月下老人, "the Old Man Under the Moon"), the old lunar matchmaker god.

In the Japanese mythos, it's traditionally bound from a man's thumb to a woman's pinky finger, but it's more common these days to show both parties attached at the pinky.

As a Literary Trope

Red String of Fate - some perceptible clue that identifies your destined One True Love.

Need not be a literal red string.

It could be a timer counting down to alert you at the exact moment that you meet the perfect person for you.

It could even be an unusually meaningful birthmark showing your destined’s name in their own handwriting.

Whether magic or Magitek (i.e., or "magitech", often appears to combine magic with modern technology or at least something distinctively mechanical), whether you’re born with it or have to have it installed, whether it actively pulls you together or serves only as a passive identifier, the match it suggests for you is your true love Because Destiny Says So.

Examples

In Paulo Coelho's Brida, the titular girl is informed that Witches can recognize who their destined soulmate is because they can see a special twinkle in the eyes, while Mages do so by seeing a star over the shoulder of their destined. Brida, who becomes an aspiring Witch, recognizes the twinkle in her actual boyfriend's eyes and is pleased; but the Mage she initially consulted has seen the star over Brida's shoulder, and is conflicted. This is carried to a long scene where the Mage finally decides to confess his visions and feelings and use the star to try to find Brida in a crowd... and then he finds Brida's boyfriend, who also has the star over his shoulder.

Referenced in DC Comics Bombshells, with Batwoman likening the red string of fate to the red stitching on the baseballs she uses. This turns out to be foreshadowing, as at the end of the series, she marries Maggie Sawyer, a girl she met back when they played together on the same baseball team.

In Jane Eyre, Mr. Rochester: "...it is as if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly and inextricably knotted to a similar string situated in the corresponding quarter of your little frame. And if that boisterous Channel, and two hundred miles or so of land, come broad between us, I am afraid that cord of communion will be snapped; and then I've a nervous notion I should take to bleeding inwardly."

In contrast, a red string in India is usually a Rakhi and is a physical demonstration of a bond between a brother and sister. It can be tied to any boy a girl considers to be like her brother and is usually used effectively to kill unwanted romantic/love interests.

The Red String belief is so well known in Japan that this trope is invoked through linguistic gestures: holding up the thumb is used as shorthand for girlfriend and holding a pinky up would indicate a boyfriend.

· Within this last month the recently arrested Satan worshipping Jeffrey Epstein of Hollywood, P Diddy, was exposed by his daughter Ally Carter. Ally was a survivor of pedophilia and human trafficking and she dropped a bombshell: there’s an entire network of tunnels that spans across the United States, connecting cities such as beneath the White House in Washington DC and Disney World Florida. These tunnels, Carter claims, are being used to traffic humans, mainly children.

· Since at least the end of World War II, an extensive Worldwide network of DUMB Underground Tunnels used for Child Sex Trafficking have been financed, built and run by members of the illuminati, Deep State, or Cabal using US taxpayer dollars funneled through a CIA Black budget.

· This was about child sex rings and blackmail at the highest levels of government. Evidently President George H.W. Bush orchestrated a child sex ring to blackmail Congress and top officials. It was named “Operation Brownstone” and “Operation Brownstar”.

· A secret US Military Operation trained for over a year on how to rescue what became millions of horrifically abused children from that extensive network of Underground DUMB Tunnels. It ran across the US, Canada, Mexico, South America and then throughout the World. Recent operations centered beneath major cities in New York, California, Florida, Washington DC and Disney World in Florida.

· The vast Worldwide child rescue missions was headed by President Trump, the Pentagon Pedophile Task Force, US Special Forces and Marines in cooperation with Interpol, and various nations’ special military forces. They included arrests of pedophile perpetrators and destruction of the underground tunnels and bases through bombs that caused minor earthquakes.

· The rescues began on Oct. 16 2019 when US Marines, Navy Seals and Special Forces rescued over 2,100 caged babies and children beneath the China Lake Navy facility in California. The children and teens were said to have been sexually abused, tortured and killed to collect their adrenaline.

now after ignoring batman 666, let's see what we have.

ROBIN: SON OF BATMAN (2015)

now, in robin: son of batman #1 It's confirmed that after his death in batman incorporated, damian went to hell. Hell is usually connected with the more magical side of the dc universe, but that's not it.

The entirety of the comic delves into damians connections to more mystical things. mythical swords and magical ancient towers, weird extinct bat-dragons, magical cults that want to destroy the whole world, etc etc.

this is easily regarded as one of damians best comics and having peak damian characterisation, so obviously Damian being magically inclined can easily work well with his character.

Now, after a barrel load of compliments, let's get to the extremely negative side of things.

TEEN TITANS (2016)

Damian's cloned brother has magic and that sentence is about as much as i care for this book. Moving on.

BATMAN (2016)

Again, dog shit damian characterisation, but here we go. Damian here actually shows an ability to use a binding spell and has a wand, making some sort of deal with a random demon, but a far cry from damian apparently selling his soul in batman 666. Moving on finally out of rebirth because that was a bad time for Damian's character.

ROBIN (2021)

Now we go back to the good. Apparently from the maternal part of damians family, magic is more commonplace. ra's even having a whole spell book to his name. Robin 2021 kinda toys with the ghul family and the lazarus pits magical and devilish side which isn't new... but it's new to involve damian!

In the final parts of this story, Damian's heart specifically is used as a plot device, lord deathman even dubbing it as "the bloodstream of the demon" and ruh (ra's' mother) uses it as a power source to fuel demon summonings, which started the Lazarus rain event.

TEEN TITANS DARK (Unreleased)

Back in early 2023 (i think) dc teased a sort of "teen titans dark" with damian, black alice and monkey prince. The "dark" moniker referencing Justice league dark, a magic team made up of magic users that solve magical bullshit. It's a good book, recommended read, i just thought I'd add this to the pile.

Detective comics/Knight terrors

Now, including these two together because they're about the same topic: Dreams.

damian is confirmed to have some sort of control over dreams and sleep, defeating demons that show up in his sleep, yet never actually disappear when he wakes up. He also has an ability to stay awake after a massive worldwide phenomenon causes everyone, even the dream masters that taught damian, to sleep and experience night terrors.

Dreams are, again, connected to the magical side of the dc universe. Now I'm not going to pretend like i actually read sandman to you, i can't lie on ramadan, so let's all give me a pass here for my lack of understanding of all that.

Batman and robin (2023)

In this, damian mentions a bit of off screen monster hunting with Frankenstein and lays a trap that lights someone on fire. I used to think this was some sort of hex but this artwork is extremely unclear, but since Frankenstein is mentioned and from my knowledge dc's Frankenstein is magic let's pretend this is some sort.

As an extra note: this guy definitely died. There's no way about it, he got lit on fire with nobody helping him. He's gone. Damian just killed a man.

Not only are these interpretations of talia EXTREMELY orientalist but also just generally out of character and could've been done with any randomly introduced characters.

For the unknowing white american people in the crowd: arabs actually don't only dress in revealing "belly dancer" outfits and lanterns. i know, shocking, we actually wear normal clothes.

And just to add again, there's a lot of stories that include ra's having magic, but I'm not the biggest ra's head (lol) so i didn't read them all, i implore u to do your own research because I'm not doing it.

what draws me to brutalia is the endless back-and-forth between them—it's painful, yet it’s the kind of pull that you can’t help but get lost in, canon be damned.

look at them! they're meant to be. they're so endgame. they're married, they're divorced, they're everything.

while i'm not opposed to batman x literally anyone else, the reason i love this ship in particular is because it isn't the usual "i can fix him" dynamic (unlike some portrayals of other love interests). instead, it's more like, "oh damn, did i make him worse? aha...."

similarly, it’s not "i can fix her" either. he doesn't need to fix her—they share the same core morals (unlike, cough cough, catwoman/j).

now, this isn't to say i dislike the other ladies bruce is often paired with. i just think they all have better options.

exhibit a: wonder woman

a platonic relationship between bruce and diana is a fantastic representation of a healthy male-female friendship. diana and steve are an adorable, enduring couple, and in some distant-future timeline, i could even see her with clark. but diana and bruce? to me, they're just a completely serious version of "comrade."

on that note, i would kill to see bruce and steve bond over being hopelessly in love with their respective immortal-warrior-princesses. also, in the most idealistic of circumstances, diana and talia would probably get along quite well.

exhibit b: catwoman

i cannot put into words how much i adore catwoman. but the one thing i can’t fully get behind is batcat (okay, i don't hate it, i'm just being dramatic haha). most people are of the opinion that batcat is essentially a decades-long booty call—a situationship, if you will. my girl selina deserves better! with bruce, she can never truly embrace being fully on the other side of the law.

a new challenger enters the arena! wait, is that...?

yes, it’s batwoman, aka kate kane. now, hear me out.

catwoman: hunted was where i first really noticed this pairing. it could work! it’s been well-established that batwoman is its own mantle, not just a female counterpart to batman. kate also doesn’t struggle with the same moral dilemmas her cousin does.

okay, i don’t really know how this evolved into a kate x selina post, but hey, every good relationship needs a third wheel that sometimes comes with a fourth wheel, right?

what i'm getting at is that i'd love to see a universe where talia isn’t constantly being pitted against every woman in bruce’s life. zatanna is a story for another day, but the others—silver st. cloud, vicki vale, nocturna, or whatever lady tickles the writer’s fancy—always felt sort of circumstantial to me.

Ok how do you know if a dc character is queer? Like, in a bunch of online lists there are characters missing. Also, if they are queer in a different universe does it count? Penguin was gay in the gotham tv series and nowhere else, what do you do with that. Oh and also there are characters that were always heavily implied to be queer but never outright said because it was the 60s or smth (btw, has wonder woman ever been shown to be involved romanticaly with a woman or is her being bi just implied?) And I've seen someone here saying that lex luthor had a boyfriend at some point (no idea if this is true or not) THERE ARE SO MANY COMICS HOW TF AM I SUPPOSED KNOW THIS NOT EVEN DC KNOWS AT THIS POINT!!

i mean i dont think its nearly as complicated as youre making it out to be lol. adaptations dont count. implications dont count if youre praising dc, because dc is a corporation and shouldnt get positive credit for anything they dont fully 100% intend, but should be accounted for if youre a fan analyzing how queerness is treated in the universe. wonder woman has been confirmed as queer by greg rucka, made references to being attracted to women, and dated girls in universes like dc bombshells (+ she is based on a bi woman). i dont think lex has ever had a boyfriend lmao idk who told you that. this is the internet age and you can just google "character name sexuality" at any point in time to see relevant panels

Harvey Guillén always loved to get dressed up. He cannot say the same of shopping. “Going to the mall was so hard,” says the What We Do in the Shadows star. “Somebody made a meme of what it is to be a person of size going shopping with your friends. Everyone else is like, ‘I got this cute outfit, I got this cute top, I got these cute jeans.’ Meanwhile I’m like, ‘I got this cute bracelet.’ “

Some brands and retailers have gotten better at catering to plus-size customers, but the evolution remains slow-going. Fortunately for the 33-year-old queer actor, a real sartorial standout with a string of buzzy 2023 red carpet looks, he’s now courting the attention of major labels, though not all of them are able to deliver. “They love him and want to work with him, but they are working with limited sample sizes and limited resources,” says stylist Michael Fusco. “It’s not a challenge for people to want to work with us, it’s the execution part.”

Christian Siriano is one who’s handled the execution. In March, Guillén became the first man to don a plus-size look from the designer at the Academy Awards. The pair collaborated again on a pink tweed suit for the Met Gala, a sly “fuck you” to event inspiration (and well-documented sizeist) Karl Lagerfeld. “Christian just knows how to make Harvey look great and elongate his lines,” adds Fusco. “It’s just magic.”

Even without Siriano on speed dial, Guillén is prepared for his increasingly public life thanks to a not-insignificant collection of clothing — his L.A. home boasts two full walk-in closets and four racks for overflow. A few of those looks will no doubt be sported on the Orange County native’s near-endless promotional circuit for Shadows (season five premieres July 13 on FX), DC feature Blue Beetle (in theaters Aug. 18) and a deep slate that includes recently announced New Line thriller Companion, among many other projects on deck.

You’ve had a lot of major red carpet moments this year. Is there a look you’d consider a favorite?

This year has just been back-to-back-to-back. The Oscars started that. We made so many best-dressed lists. Christian had designed for Billy Porter before, but never has he designed for a plus-size guy — so it was nice to collaborate with him on something that was new and had never been done before. The Met Gala was great. They were obviously honoring Karl Lagerfeld, but you also have to represent yourself. So I wore pink. Karl was known for not liking pink. I like loads of things that he didn’t approve of.

How would you describe your first experience at the Met Gala?

I got to walk the carpet before I hosted the night for E! I’d never really put on that hat before. Maybe next time I’ll just go and do the carpet and enjoy the event. It was really cool to watch everyone come in, but it was also very exhausting to be out there in an outfit, all night, talking to people.

Working in even the most basic tuxedo can be exhausting.

Yeah! You’re just wearing Louis Vuittons, and these shoes are meant for being walked on and taking pictures — not running up the hill for hours and hours on end. I can’t even imagine it wearing heels. There’s no way I could do that for eight hours.

I’ve seen you at a couple of events wearing semi-sheer tops. Even with fashion’s easing of older gender norms, that takes confidence. Were you always so adventurous, or is this a recent development?

I’ve always been one to take risks; I just never had the opportunity to do so. It’s already hard to be confident in your own body, especially in this industry. So, if you’re going to do something, then do it full out. And then there are the people who comment, like, “Oh my God, you’re so confident in that.” Yeah, I want to feel my best in what I’m wearing. Why wouldn’t I wear a sheer top? People are just like, “Wow …” They usually assume that people who are a plus size want to cover up, not show off any skin or curves. I do the opposite. I want to show my curves. I want to show a little peekaboo. The sheer is fun.

What is your everyday style?

For the day, a T-shirt and jeans will be just fine. Obviously, you’re not going to wear a Christian Siriano gown to pick up bread. But I like to play with old stuff. My place in L.A. has four racks of clothes on top of two walk-in closets that are already full. I’ve collected so many pieces over the years that I’ve probably only ever worn once. I can’t bring myself to get rid of them. I have pieces I haven’t worn that are ready to go for an event. I’m like Ariana Grande: I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it. Because it’s hard to find stuff in your size! So when I find something I like, I don’t double-guess it. In the past, I’d be like, “I’ll get it later.” Then it’s gone!

The clothes that we put off buying haunt us for years.

To this day, there are these shoes that I think about. I was in Germany and thought, “It’s fine, I’m sure I can get them online.” Nope! Sometimes, in the middle of the night, I’ll wake up in a cold sweat of regret. “No! The shoes!”

When you’re at the mall, what do you gravitate toward?

When I do a movie or something, the costume designers will call, and it’s always the same conversation: “Where do you shop for your clothes?” Which is so interesting to me because I was like, “Where do you shop for everyone’s clothes?” The difference is they know that question is loaded because a lot of designers or stores only go to a certain size. It isn’t as easy, and then that becomes their struggle. You’d be surprised how many times I’m like, “See, the struggle is real.” I had one costume designer who gave up. They were like, “Can you just bring some of your own clothes?”

If you have the clothes, that means they’re out there.

You can find it! You can find clothes in a size that fits everyone; you have to search. For me, the easy go-to is ASOS. They’re reliable when it comes to a big selection of sizes — and they deliver overnight — so I do ASOS a lot. I remember spending whole afternoons at the mall just looking for clothes. You find something that you like, but then they don’t make sizes past a large or an XL. They don’t think that people who are our size are fashionable. They think you’ll be content shopping at Big & Tall — which is fine if you want to shop there, but it’s very limited. Big & Tall is for someone who’s big and tall. … “tall” being the key word. I’m big and short. There should be a shop called Big & Short. (Laughs.) The average body is not a size zero, so it’s surprising to me how the fashion industry keeps pushing that idea. The average person wants to look fashionable. But that’s aspirational living, right?

And, like any other industry, they want to make money. So it doesn’t make sense to ignore such a significant portion of the market.

It’s always surprising when you see, like, “Well, the sales are low this year.” Why? Sales will go through the roof if you just added two more sizes to your collection — or at least another three sizes on top of that. There’s money out there that people want to spend. It’s like in Pretty Woman. I want to walk in like Julia Roberts with a bunch of bags and say, “I came in yesterday, and you didn’t have my size. Big mistake. Huge.” I have money to spend, but you don’t get my money because you didn’t think I was worth making a garment for my body.

How would you describe your discussions with the Shadows costume designer about the aesthetic of your character, Guillermo?

Laura Montgomery, who won the Emmy for costume design, is amazing. She and I get together at the beginning of the season. Because we know what the year’s going to be like for the character, we sprinkle in something new. In season one, he’s more buttoned up. He’s almost suffocating in his own clothing. In season two, he relaxes a little bit. He unbuttons the top button. If you look at pictures of every season, he slowly starts to become the version of who he’s supposed to be — to the point where, in season four, he’s wearing Versace. It’s in a non-fashionable way, of course. That’s just what he thinks people with money should look like.

Who are your own style icons?

There are classic icons that never go away — both male and female. Audrey Hepburn is iconic. But I like the new ideas of fashion. When you look at Maluma and Bad Bunny, they’re oozing confidence, right? Maluma, even offstage, looks amazing in the shirt because he’s wearing it in a way that he’s living his best life. And I strive to do that myself. I could wear a potato sack, but I’d wear it with such confidence that people are like, “I want a potato sack.”

I've seen a lot of discourse on it, and i was curious on your opinion. a lot of people say up and down that zatana is hispanic/white passing hispanic. but a lot of "canon" sources say shes romani jewish.

what ethnicity do you think she is?

the romani/jewish thing was 100% from DC bombshells. Which is alternate universe.

Well the dc wiki says romani/italian. And her father and great grandfather and even her ancestor lendardo da vinci are very italian. 🤌. And i'm not gonna argue with a wiki even though it can be edited easily enough. And now i'm googling stuff like 'are italians white?' and 'are italians latino?'.

According to some peeps on reddit and the like she's more than likely a (lapsed) catholic btw . Although they're basing that on this one panel from Zatanna Vol 2 #5. And someone else mentioned that she went to a catholic school in young justice.

The Batgirls, were named not after the winged creatures of the night, but because they began as an all-female baseball team in wartime Gotham City, who branched out into vigilante crime fighting. The Girls are just some of a vast cast of heroines and villainessss aiding and abetting the Nazis who are busy securing both advanced technological and supernatural help to aid them in winning the war, featured in the 2015-2017 series DC Comics Bombshells. Apart from their athleticism and fighting prowess, with nods to their later 1960s namesake, the Batgirls also literally use their baseball bats as weapons when taking down street criminals, crooked politicians and, in this case, the owners of an orphanage who are using it as a front to develop Nazi weapons and to supply the Fatherland with child slave labour.

These panels are from DC Comics Bombshells #21 (2015). The series was inspired by a set of collectible statuettes depicting various DC Comics heroines designed by Ant Lucia. Marguerite Bennett wrote the series, supported by a number of different artists and, like Lucia’s original designs, gave the title a retro 1940s look. The Batgirls are perhaps something of a curiosity, but what’s not to love about an anti-Nazi baseball playing girl gang?

World Bank Bureaucrats Can’t Account for up to $41 Billion for ‘Climate Change’ Funds

I have long asserted that the “climate crisis” and its solutions were a scheme to transfer money and power to international bureaucrats, whose main interest is to gain control over the lives of free peoples in order to gain even more money and power.

Enter Oxfam, a prominent international confederation of 21 independent non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that is interested in humanitarian aid and development worldwide. It recently examined the climate change funds kept in the World Bank and discovered that up to $41 billion was not accounted for.

Bungling World Bank bureaucrats lost track of at least $24 billion bankrolling the battle against climate change, according to a bombshell report by a left-leaning charity group. An investigation by Oxfam revealed “poor record-keeping practices” by the DC-based international lender that resulted in anywhere between $24 billion and $41 billion in misplaced funds. Secondly, I totally think she could! I mean, Trigon can like…change his size and form. So it would make sense if Raven could too! I like to think that it isn’t time in order for her to reach a size, but to be able to have the ability to change her size.

Do you want to read about a post apocalyptical elseworld focused on the DC female characters? Read this. 

You can really tell this one was trying to capture the same success as Bombshells. It’s has a very similar narrative tone and of course the obvious focus on the female characters. Unfortunately for it I think it missed part of what made Bombshells so successful in that it wasn’t really in “conversation” with mainstream comics like Bombshells was. 

Which is not to say this is a bad comic. It’s still very enjoyable and well paced story that does have have some powerful moments. The characterization is good and I do like how they made Bruce a villain and didn’t have him have a heel-face-turn despite the multiple chances that story gave for them to fall into it.

I think it’s just missing that one element that made Bombshells amazing - and that is that Bombshells is so much a response to how comics have treated their female characters for years. While here it just focuses on the female characters. Which again don’t get me wrong it’s still a good comic and it’s nice to have a comic that does focus on the female characters without necessarily being in a meta discussion with the source material. 

Should you read it? Yes. I do actually still think it’s worth a read. It’s a good series that is a nice escape from the usual DC universe while still clearly about the DC characters.

Report: Harris Seeks Counsel From Hillary Clinton Following Election Loss As She Plans Future Campaign

Former Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly consulted with Hillary Clinton on numerous occasions following her crushing defeat to President Donald Trump.

The two Democrat leaders were both hopeful to become the first woman president in American history, though both were similarly denied that opportunity — since the American people opted to select President Donald Trump instead.

Since the election, Harris has reportedly kept her options open regarding her political future, stating last Friday: “It is not my nature to go quietly into the night.”

Speculation has mounted that Harris will either attempt to run for California governor next year, as Newsom is term limited, or she could potentially stage a comeback on the national stage by launching another presidential run in 2028.

“Harris could break one glass ceiling and do the near-impossible of turning California red if she chooses to run for governor in 2028,” a source told The New York Post.

“Los Angeles is full of virtue signalers, but a lot of them may be having second thoughts about politicians like Harris, given the wildfires,” a former Los Angeles district attorney added, according to The Post.

Critics say that Harris’ campaign messaging was viewed as out of touch, pompous, and elitist, as she relied on phony and shallow celebrity endorsements to move the needle, without providing any real vision for the country over the next four years –besides her abortion advocate promises.

Harris also reportedly never had a “backup plan” regarding an election day defeat, as her team was confident “even up until 6, 7 p.m. on election night, they felt very confident she would become president,” according to a Harris campaign staffer speaking to The Post.

The former vice president has refused to acknowledge any of her mishaps leading to one of the most crushing defeats in modern political history. The whole country watched as she lost all seven battleground states.

“She is done in D.C. and quite frankly was the worst major candidate of either party since Michael Dukakis,” stated an anonymous senior congressional Democrat, according to the New York Post report.

As Harris remains silent, Democrat leaders have been consistently looking for someone to place the blame on in regards to her defeat.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently insinuated that former President Joe Biden was to blame, for not ending his campaign sooner, following his disastrous debate performance against Trump last summer.

“Had the president gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race,” Pelosi stated following the election. “If it had been much earlier, it would have been different.”

Pelosi led the charge to pressure Biden to end his campaign, quickly endorsing Harris at the top of the ticket without holding a Democrat primary.

The Democrat blame game has also targeted Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, who made headlines after it was discovered that he cheated on his first wife with their nanny, and that he allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend back in 2012, according to her.

“He looked like a hypocritical ass after the bombshells that he had got his child’s nanny pregnant while married to his first wife and assaulted his ex-girlfriend on the heels of his ‘I am a woman’ crusade,’” a source told the Daily Mail.

Another source close to Harris who spoke with The Post expressed that she should just end her political career altogether now.

“She’s a fake and a fraud. I mean retire for God’s sake. Let some other people take a stab at life,” the anonymous source said to press. “I don’t see her getting a warm welcome back in California.”

It almost hit me as hard as when another writer in an interview said he only found out about the actual chain of events that kick-started the mini he was writing (5 issues) midway through it as in, he was working on issue #3 and already submitted 2 entire issues that got approved when he found out
