hunter!watcher AU thoughts

Long textpost, not sure how this will show up since I haven't made one before. Anyway, some background on why I thought of this in the first place:

When the watcher released, I played it at the same time as two of my friends, one of whom said that they thought it was the hunter killing the watcher's family in the opening scene. Whether or not that is actually the case, it got me thinking about the two of them in the same sphere. Everything that followed was just typical insane person brainrot.

Obviously watcher is not hunter in canon (I used to think it was possible that the prince was NSH, but after learning a little more about outside inspiration and stardust and such I don't believe it's possible anymore) buuuutttttt.... it'd be fun if they were. So how do we explain everything that happens?

The intro cutscene would have hunter killing the watcher's family. When it becomes an echo from reaching the void sea after doing the typical hunter quests, due to rot interference and general "not ready to go" echo-y feelings, it enters a between-world purgatory state. In this purgatory, it takes on the visage of the child it remembers glimpsing out of the corner of its eye as it killed its family in front of it. Hunter just lost its own father in NSH - and now it's watched itself kill another slugcat's parent. I think it would be a little haunted, no?

Prior to meeting Spinning Top, the between-world follows a similar decline to what it witnessed happening to itself as it neared the void sea. Everything, lizards, the walls and floor, sprouting rot. Flies buzzing around everywhere as they did the hunter's own decaying flesh. Trapped in a small area, unable to visit either of the iterators it met for help. No relief from the rot this time.

Spinning Top meets the watcher and maybe sees another like itself. Abandoned (in some ways) by its family and unable to move on. They grant the watcher some control over its echo abilities that it did not have initially (due to aforementioned rot fuckery) and lets it warp into a different between-world. In canon, the watcher's stars appear after the first meeting with Spinning Top. In hunter!watcher they later morph into the "X"s that adorn the rot cysts, so I'm not sure how exactly that would tie in here - like, I can't really imagine, even in AU, as Spinning Top doing anything to further the watcher's rot. Anyone have any ideas?

Anyway, the watcher goes through the typical questline of helping Spinning Top pass on, its echo-y-ness and abilities grow alongside its rot. (I guess this could be used as the explanation to the prior question: due to the nature of its ascension, its rot and status as an echo are just permanently linked, so any gaining of echo abilities follow with growth of rot.)

After doing this, the watcher begins its own quest to return to the source of its attachment and find a way to go through the "white door". It encounters the prince, who calls its scent familiar (jury is still out on the reason for this in canon tbh, like why does bro say that. Maybe watcher/prince were some slug/iterator pair before, just... not hunter and NSH lol) during the several passes before they break out from the cyst. During each pass, the watcher begins to recognize the destroyed facility as the one belonging to NSH, and when it sees the prince, immediately recognizes it as what it's looking for, even if its memories are still clouded.

Something something I'm bad at writing sappy and coherent endings, after spending some time playing with the prince the watcher is able to pass on. I'm still very confused about what all happens with the ending, like... was it intentional? Did the prince want that to happen? Or are the karma flowers the influence of some oppositional force? Either way... we won't know until further updates which will most certainly disconnect with the AU even more than current canon lol.

Of course, the watcher's imagination of what happened to NSH as the rot progressed is only true in this between-world, and the prince only a stand-in built by the watcher's memories. In the "real" world, I think NSH's life went a lot like Pebbles'. Can eventually crashed, decaying back into the world as it freezes over. But of course the watcher is only a slugcat, one trapped in a phasmic world no less, and the difference between their fake NSH and the real one isn't noticeable. All that matters is the self-assurance to let go.

The Shirt Swap AU

Okay, folks, hang with me here.

We're all familiar with the "In-Name Only AU", the phenomenon where via a Ship of Theseus-style series of changes, eventually people end up writing AUs in which the characters, setting, and themes are so divergent from the source material the author is essentially writing original fiction, only the protagonists are named Dean and Cas.

There is an equal and opposite phenomenon, which is when an AU barely makes any changes at all.

Generally it starts with a pretty simple "what if?". Like 'What if supporting character Jane took Bob's place in the story?' or 'What if the protagonist's powers were X instead of Y?'

And to be clear and very, many an intriguing AU has been born of this questioning! But not all such scenarios are made equal.

In this case, these ones probably have enough meat on the bone to make for a very funny series of textposts on tumblr, or a three panel comic, or the like. But your erstwhile author decides to write the AU out in its entirety. Scene-by-scene.

... And it turns out, not that much changes, on that micro-level. Or maybe things would, but that divergence would be so significant, that the writer doesn't want to or can't commit to such a departure from the status quo. So to justify it, the creator maybe throws in a couple more minor, superficial differences. The scene is set at an aquarium instead of a library, etc.

This can lead to near shot-for-shot comic recreations of the original text, except, the only changes are some mild dialogue shifts and also the characters are wearing different colour shirts. (Hence, what I've been mentally calling this phenomenon in my head.)

This phenomenon tends to seen the strongest when the creator is operating in the same or a similar medium to the original text. Like, if you're going movie-to-fanfic, or book-to-fancomic, it's less of an issue, because adapting across mediums inherently requires interesting choices. But if it's tv show-to-comic, it becomes very obvious.

Now, this can be frustrating to see in fan spaces, but mostly because of a sense of wasted potential. 'This could be so good, if only--!'

But when I feel that way, I generally remind myself, it's a good learning tool for writers and creators who are starting out. And also, even if the creator learns nothing, as long as they have fun, that's what matters.

That said[deep breath] when I see major motion picture "remakes" do this I have NONE OF THE SAME FUCKING SYMPATHY.

One of most fascinating things about fanfiction is that it's fundamentally about stripping the characters down to what you believe are their core traits, and everyone has a different understanding of what those are. Yet there are also largely agreed upon understandings or trends which collectives sometimes agree upon even when there's no textual evidence (especially with characters that were originally written in a flat way or had very little time in the actual text).

There's an obsession with "accuracy" of how you write a character, when in reality we're all we're all making innumerable decisions (conscious or not) about which of the character's traits are most important for them to be recognizable, which traits would come up in this particular instance, which traits would be different IF [insert AU here]. Purpose is also a huge factor. Some people just want to recreate the character and even original text's voice as much as possible while writing a moment they didn't get to see in the main text. Some people ((calling myself out)) go way too deep with the psychology and write VASTLY different from source material AUs in which they spend countless hours considering how differently the character would be/behave under those alternature circumstances.

And then some people just really want to imagine their blorbo doing one specific thing, and if textual evidence or reasonable inference would strongly suggest character would never, who cares? Some people care a lot, I have been said person before as well, and it's tempting to just write it off as "bad writing", but you really shouldn't. For one thing, when somebody writes a goofy textpost, is that bad literature? No. Because they weren't trying to write high-brow literature. And perhaps more importantly, I would urge you to refrain from labelling (even mentally) anyone's fanfiction as "bad writing". Instead, consider what they were trying to do (really you should do that with all things you read, but the rest of these apply more to fics).

What core traits were they trying to portray?

Did OP just want to see blorbo in this random smutty circumstance?

Is this person writing in their native language? Did this person have a beta/proofreader at all? Remember that people are doing this FOR FREE and without the help of professional editors like a real piece of literature. At best we have honest friends to bounce ideas off of or point out our typos. Frankly, no one owes you the fully proofread version. I once had someone comment on one of my 100, 000 word longfics that English grammar in this chapter was a bit shaky (implying I'm not a native speaker, which is so rude to begin with), to which I replied I am a native English speaker, 100%-ed the English section of SAT, all AP English classes all A's, and I even TAUGHT English, but I often write late at night halfway delirious and I do not in fact proofread the 1,000, 5,000, or sometimes even 10,000 word chapters on these longfics before I post them DAILY. DAILY!! Appreciate that you can comprehend this garbage it all, or I'm gonna start posting in hieroglyphs.

But I digress, my point is really that collective fandom conscious and the inherent inferences and interpretations (really key word here) every fic author makes are fascinating and really represent the core skills of literacy. We should all appreciate that more.

Hello! <333 I'm sorry to say, I know basically nothing about this game. :( I am peripherally aware that it is a thing that exists in the world, and--now that I have just looked them up--the operating systems it is available for. And... that's it! womp womp. I don't really have free time, so I've been trying my best to prioritize fanfic and textposts--my two favorite genres--in what slivers I can steal (one day...), and not looking at anything else (except on Sundays, which in this house is 'tag and queue cool fan art' day. Today!!).

I see you've already seen/liked this post, but I am looking forward to (one day, lol lol lol) reading @rays-of-fire-and-ice's post about its HitsuHina elements/scenes, which I just saved!

But I hope that for those who do play it, it is as excellent an experience as the summer my sister and I spent playing Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 for PS2. It is BY FAR my favorite PS2 game I have ever played, and I don't even like fighting games. (I'll also note that it is the only PS2 game I've ever played to completion, and I have only ever played like 5 PS2 games. But its competition was **Final Fantasy X** and **Shadow of the Colossus** which many would argue are two of the finest pieces ever produced for PS2. I may be alone on the planet in this, but Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 is way way way way more fun than either of those!!! Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 4ever!!) In my mind I think I assume that franchise-based games are more money-grabs than "this is going to be the finest game ever made" but man, the fighting in Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 felt so true to character and well-integrated into the world of the original manga, and the story mode/open world wandering around was completely delightful. It just felt so loving toward its source material and really full of character. I would die for Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3.

That's all to say, I liked Bleach way more than Naruto even when I was playing Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3, so I hope that this new Bleach game gives that experience and more to everyone who plays it, and that it, too, is a love letter to the vibe and characters that make Bleach Bleach. <3333
