Song Review(s): Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - “Spirit in the Night” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-out” (Howard Stern)

Turns out the E Street Band can play jazz, too.

Led by their boss, Bruce Springsteen, a pared-down crop of E Streeters played a swingin’ version of “Spirit in the Night” Oct. 23 on “the Howard Stern Show.” The three guitars were acoustic, the backbeat was loose and the song was truncated when Stern mistook a false ending for the real thing, leaving Springsteen to laugh and limp the song to a premature conclusion.

“I suck,” Stern said truthfully.

But the performance absolutely did not. Later, the band lit into “Tenth Avenue Freeze-out” in a more-familiar, though subtler, arrangement to suit the (relatively) small number of E Street denizens in the studio.

Solid. But Sound Bites would really like to hear more of what the band put into “Spirit;” that stuff was boss.
