Happy 104th birthday to my dearest Peggy Carter! ❤️

For her birthday I have curated what I think her SHIELD file actually looks like, her timeline during the war, and some other things.

It all started because I watched a deleted scene from The Avengers where Steve is looking at some files, and we can see Peggy’s file, which is completely wrong and full of inconsistencies. Thank God it stayed in the deleted scene.

Before starting, this is information I gathered on my own, they are my headcanons, if you don’t agree that’s perfectly fine, just be respectful. If you want to share your opinion feel free to do so! Now, let’s get started.

Margaret Elizabeth Carter was born on April 9, 1921 in Hampstead, England. Daughter of Harrison and Amanda Carter, she also had an older brother, Michael, who was four years older than her. She attended Parliament Hill School from 1928 to 1936, obtaining her school certificate at the age of 15. Despite her wanting to attend college, she was not allowed due to her parents' belief that it was not lady-like. However, in 1937 she managed to join the Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service (PMRAFNS) by lying about her age, saying she had been born in 1919, making her 18.

She worked and trained there as a Staff Nurse (it looks like all nursing staff had officer ranks but this one was the lowest, and it didn't have an equivalent in the RAF). In June of 1939 the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) was created, she took the opportunity and transferred there. Her superiors realized she was rather good at math and languages so when operations started in Bletchley Park in 1940 she was sent there. While in the WAAF she was an Officer Cadet, as she was undergoing officer training, but this is not an actual rank. In Bletchley Park she worked as a code breaker and wireless operator.

Upon her brother's death in August of the same year, she joined the SOE which at the time was controlled by the Secret Intelligence Service aka Mi6, she trained there for the reminder of the year (4 months of training). She was parachuted into France in 1941 as a courier. She was a master at evasion and good at turning anything and everything into a weapon. After her mission was completed she was summoned to Cairo. There she stopped working for the SOE (but continued working in the MI6) and was transferred to the ATS obtaining a promotion to Second Subaltern. She was assigned to be the liaison between GHQ (General Headquarters in Cairo) and the newly formed Special Air Service (SAS). She provided them with intelligence and basic medical care, after a while she began going into missions with them.

She participated in the Battle of El Alamein where she was wounded by a gunshot to the shoulder. As women were not allowed to fight in active combat she was given orders to go home but Colonel Phillips recruited her to work for the SSR. In early 1943 she was sent on a mission to Germany to rescue Dr Erskine. In the US, the idea for Project Rebirth was born. Steve Rogers was recruited on May 5, 1943.

Because her rank is equivalent to that of a Second Lieutenant, she was in charge of a platoon (18-50 men), composed of three or more squads (6-12 men). Second Lieutenants are addressed as sir or ma'am, but because she worked with the SSR she was addressed as Agent. Steve received the serum on June 22, 1943, and was sent on tour to sell war bonds. She went back to Europe. They meet again in November 1943 when Steve rescues the 107th and forms the Howling Commandos. She worked all over Europe with and without the Howling Commandos, and also helped coordinate the operations of the SAS in Europe. In total she "... spent three years in the mud of the European theater. Eastern Front, Western Front, and everything in between." (Agent Carter s1e5).

At some point after the Commando Order was issued by Hitler in October of 1942, she was captured and almost executed by hanging, but she managed to escape.

At the end of the war in 1945 she was discharged from both the ATS and the MI6 but kept on the SSR, so she immigrated to the US. She was promoted from agent to Lieutenant after taking down Dr Johann Fennhoff. When the SSR began dissolving in 1949 she was recruited by Howard Stark and Colonel Phillips to direct SHIELD. Her role was Deputy Director until after 1955 because they do not address to her as the Director of SHIELD in AoS but they do say "she outranks us" (s7e3). She retired after 1989 but before 1995.

About her uniform; she wore a green uniform but it didn't match that of the ATS or FANY. It started as a regular ATS uniform, but being in the SAS gave her the opportunity to modify her uniform because it was a newly created detachment/regiment.

I think she never wore the WAAF uniform which was blue because she was barely there like 4 months, she spent more time in the nurse's uniform.

Now! Military honors and awards. It took her some time to get recognition for her accomplishments but in total she has six military awards: the 1939-1945 star, the Africa star, the France and Germany star, the war medal, the Croix de Guerre, and the Medal of freedom.

She was a Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (GBE), and also had one of these cute parachutists badges, on the left is the one awarded to other SOE members, and on the right the one belonging to the SAS. I can’t decide which one though.

I feel like I'm missing something but that's all I have for the moment, I hope you guys enjoy!

Home: Time to stir things up.

Home Idle 1: My nickname "Disc Thief" is pretty well-known, so maybe I might get scouted by some pro team with their eye on me... Nah, that'd be too good to be true.

Home Idle 2: We can hear Leona's voice pretty good even when we got noisy spectators durin' a game. Guess lions just got a healthier roar to 'em.

Home Idle 3: It's a total pain whenever I get marked by Epel durin' a club scrimmage. His stamina doesn't drop even when we go into the second half of the game, the kid's persistent.

Home Idle - Login: My playstyle is basically where I make plays when they'll count and everywhere else, I slack... I mean, I rest to catch a breather.

Home Idle - Groovy: Even if you can't use magic, you can still join our club. We got a ton of stuff for a manager to get done!

Home Tap 1: Vargas's coachin' is all about buildin' muscle. It's tirin' and sucks, but he piles it on even more if you try to skip out on it...

Home Tap 2: Magical shift is a mage-only sport. It might be popular, but since there aren't many players, people are impressed by anyone who's got experience playin'.

Home Tap 3: This is a high-contact sport, so elbow and knee pads are a must. Not like I'm gonna be in any position to get hit by the other side, though.

Home Tap 4: When I was a kid, I randomly found a magical shift disc, polished it up and sold it on the streets. That was a pretty great find.

Home Tap 5: Don'tcha think they should give out prize money for our club competitions? Can't really get excited if all we get are trophies or certificates.

I really like reading all your translations, theories and fanfics! It's really great to be able to read your thoughts about characters and cards because am a f2p so I have a very limited stash of gems to pull lol

So I was thinking about the rrcent jp update and I went back to read some of your work on Scarabia. I'll admit they weren't amongst my favorites before so I haven't paid too much attention to them. I was wondering then about the couple times you've said Jamil is well off? Maybe it's from one of his SSR cards of his home event, but I can't remember where he or maybe Kalim implies that?

As for your question, I’m not actually sure if there's dialogue which explicitly states the Viper family's level of wealth. I couldn't find any when I combed through, so I had to go off of implications and my own interpretations of those. From what I’ve gathered, I see the Vipers as upper middle class, or at least middle class with a LOT of benefits (the benefits being present boost them to upper middle class due to the lifestyle the benefits afford them).

So firstly, I think there's a lot of debate surrounding Jamil's family income. Some fans seem to think that the Vipers must be destitute due to their position as servants and Jamil's disdain for how the Asims throw around their money and influence. However, perceived social status or class does NOT always equate to being low income. There are people irl who are technically "servants" and "hired help" that make a significant salary while working for much wealthier individuals. There is data for bodyguards, private chefs, executive assistants, and skilled nannies who earn six-figure incomes and/or excellent benefits working for celebrities, politicians, businessmen, etc. (Notably, guarding, cooking, scheduling/planning, and generally looking after Kalim are all a part of Jamil's duties.) Real world examples of this include employees of the White House and the British royal family.

Now, that all depends a lot on the type of people the employers are. There are many wealthy families who mistreat their staff and/or don't pay them well. From what I've seen of the Asims though, I definitely feel that this is not the case. To begin with, the Vipers don't just do one task for the Asims, they do a LOT. You're already aware of the constant work Jamil has to do around the clock to keep Kalim safe and satisfied, but his parents must do the same. They're described as experts in hospitality and are frequently hosting and entertaining guests from all over Twisted Wonderland. This is skilled labor, and that demands commiserate pay. Not only that, but Kalim describes his father as someone who is very generous (and the guy has plenty of money to spare). I don’t see why Mr. Asim would purposefully skimp on specifically paying the Vipers.

I would also imagine that the Vipers are afforded other benefits. Jamil has said many times that he has to look or act a certain way, as his behavior/appearance reflects on the family he serves. Therefore, the Asims may provide other things Jamil and the Vipers need to “look good” and to best represent and serve the Asims. This could mean food, clothes, transportation/travel expenses, education (like additional training, manners lessons, certification exams, etc.) all paid for on the Asim family’s coin. Jamil has mentioned that his parents gave him lessons in everything he’d need to know in order to serve Kalim, so this tells his parents are also well-educated and/or were at least able to pay for lessons for Jamil. And these lessons aren’t “normal” lessons either, it includes things like formal bodyguard training (you’d have to pay for this irl) and formal table manners (which most of us aren’t taught unless we seek it out).

We also recently learned in book 7 that the Vipers live on Asim property, which is very luxurious. Jamil states that his family would be on the streets should they lose their place serving the Asims—and this could be interpreted in a very literal sense if we think of as losing the roof over their heads. Yes, it's technically not land or housing that the Vipers own, but it is still free high-class lodging, nonetheless. It is a benefit that is afford to them (among others) because of their job(s), similar to those real life examples I mentioned before. One could make the argument that none of this wealth truly belongs to the Vipers. However, you could also argue that because these benefits come with the job, it technically is theirs as long as they keep their job (which is, in fact, how jobs irl work; if you stop working for an employer then naturally you’ll stop getting the benefits that come with that job eventually). It’s complicated. I suspect that, at the very least, part of the reason why the Vipers don’t want to depart from serving the Asims is because they don’t want to lose the pay and the perks that come with their work.

I want to add that the Vipers’ position also gives them the unique advantage of exposing them to tons of important individuals. They are able to meet and connect with these VIPs when most people could never even dream of meeting them, even if just from the viewpoint of a servant. It’s a similar to Lilia and Silver, who technically are not rich (money-wise) but still have ties with majorly influential people (members of the Draconia royal family).

Obviously, the Vipers still aren’t as rich as the Asims and probably will never be, but I believe they still enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. We never see Jamil worry about money or being short of it. He gives his VDC/SDC earnings away without batting an eye, unlike Deuce (from a single-parent income family) who keeps the money since it would really help out his mom. He doesn’t have to work a ton of odd jobs to make ends meet (unlike Ruggie). But Jamil does haggle and act frugal. I think that behavior comes from not a genuine need but Jamil being mindful and planning ahead to avoid being scammed. He’s shown to be a cautious individual who often is the one putting the breaks on Kalim’s extravagance, so I feel the skill also comes partly from having to be the one to curb his ridiculous spending and bring Kalim down to earth. Jamil is still the type of person who would tell Kalim when he’s buying too much or overdoing things, even when it’s not Jamil’s own money being spent and he knows Kalim can afford it. That’s what leads me to believe his frugalness isn’t necessarily the result of him being low income and “needing” to save. If that were the case, he shouldn’t care if Kalim throws his own money at buying diamond jewelry for all the dorm members as souvenirs.

I think the closest metric we have as a frame of reference for how wealthy Jamil is comes from the Tapis Rouge event. In it, Jamil forks out 500 thaumarks (or 50000 madol) to buy a jacket. He remarks that the price is fairly expensive but good quality so it’s worth it. Whether you consider this an indicator of his low or high wealth is really all relative to what your own perception is. Jamil had also previously remarked that what the Mostro Lounge charges is absurd. In Ruggie’s Ceremonial Robes vignettes, Azul quotes the price of one soft drink as 4 thaumarks/400 madol. Jamil responds with “Four? Talk about a markup.” It should be noted that the latter example doesn’t mean Jamil cannot afford a drink of that price; he’s complaining about how expensive Azul has made it to capitalize on the high demand. Do with this knowledge what you will.

I had a quick follow up to my Phantom Lady question, I wanted to explain why I thought the PLs were related, the WW2 one was Sandra Knight, she's said so herself. And then the third one was actress Stormy Knight who quit super heroics after going to rehab. They have the same last name! And shared a mantle. Also for some reason, their fathers were dudes named Senator Henry Knight. Now I couldn't find hard evidence that they were related (I can't exactly get their birth certificates) but that's too many coincidences for them not to be related somehow.

You've hit the nail on the head, it just take a little bit of digging to find the connection. I, however, happen to have a wonderful resource for it that I've already partially used in another ask.

Now, the original Phantom Lady was the daughter of famous New Deal senator Henry Knight of the very prestigious Knight Clan of Democratic politicians. Right up there with the Kennedys really. However what this tree DOESN'T show is that that original Henry Knight had two brothers. One of whom was the father of original Starman Ted Knight.

Their OTHER, youngest brother was a Colonel in WWII who, once he returned home from the European theater he was appointed as a diplomatic officer to the Ukrainian SSR. While stationed in Kyiv he had 2 sons. The oldest of whom was Henry Knight Jr, named after his famous uncle. He would be elected to a prestigious term in the Senate under the same Democratic banner as his uncle and many of his other male family members before him. HE would have one daughter, Stormy Knight. Who would eventually go on to become the 3rd Phantom Lady. So as far as I can tell. As the daughter of Stormy Knight Great-Uncle that means that Sandra Knight is Stormy Knight's first cousin once removed. Stormy was often compared to her famous predecessor, as Sandra Knight had obviously also been the daughter of a famous progressive senator and the most eligible bachelorette in DC at the time of both of their youths. However while Sandra Knight was never one to lean into the debutante stereotype, Stormy had always been more easily seduced by the expensive living that her father's popularity afforded her. Some comments by the younger Knight imply that this was partially because of the combination of pressure and construction she felt as the daughter of a prominent politician. She was expected to keep to a rigorous set of standards so as to not embarrass her high profile family and as such acted out as many young people do in circumstances like that.

She was inspired into another act of rebellion that lead to her taking up the mantle of the Phantom Lady which had been tragically been vacated by the well remembered Dee Tyler during the opening assault of the supervillain organization known as the Secret Society (the same that ultimately lead to the Battle for Metropolis). Interestingly enough Ms Tyler was ALSO the raven haired daughter of a famous Washington political figure. This time Pennsylvania born Republican Attorney General Albert Tyler. Tyler and the younger Knight attended the same Washington private high school at the same time, though 2 grades apart. She would connect with a new generation of heroes patterning themselves off the Freedom Fighters in the aftermath of the previous team's tragic last stand. She served with distinction and was well liked by her teammates thought outside commentators made note of the fact that she often seemed unbalanced in the aftermath of missions and didn't make much of a superhero's outward bearing or constitution. Henry Knight Jr would be killed by a government agent named Father Time in an attempt to replace him with a robot, related to machinations revolving around the chemical attacks of the city of Bludhaven. This personal tragedy, along with the manipulation by the Department of Defense in an attempt to bring her into line would ultimately be what drove Stormy Knight to the alcohol and grief fueled binge that would land Stormy Knight in long term rehab seen to by her Freedom Fighters teammates. Stormy Knight is currently on a long term sabbatical from superhero work, which may be temporary or may be permanent it will be hard to say either or for a good while yet. All that is said about her when her family or teammates are asked is that she is taking what steps she needs to recover her life. In which I wish her the best of luck. Any of the missions she's already been on are more than the world could ask of anybody and if she says she's paid her fair share, then I'm in no place to argue with her.

Madoka: …Ah, Masumi. Are you going for lunch now?

Masumi: That was the plan. But class got cancelled this afternoon, so I’m going home. …Are you on lunch now?

Madoka: Yes. I was going to go to the bakery by the west gate.

Masumi: Here, take this.

Madoka: A sandwich… isn’t this your lunch, Masumi?

Masumi: I’m going to have Director’s special curry.

Madoka: I see…? I’ll gratefully take it off your hands then. How much do I owe you…

Masumi: It’s fine.

Madoka: That won’t do. If you don’t need money, then I can give you something else… I know. I’ll give this to you as thanks then.

Masumi: …A gift certificate?

Madoka: It’s a gift certificate to a big variety store that recently opened up nearby. They sell a lot of different things like stationary, books, and other miscellaneous goods. I recommend it.

Masumi: Hmm.

Madoka: You can use it if you’d like.

Masumi: …Sure. I’ll take it.

Manager: There we go. Ah~, I’m beat.

Izumi: Thank you for your hard work sorting the fan letters.

Manager: We got a ton this month. It was rough~.

Izumi: Fufu. That's something to be grateful for, right? I’ll prepare some curry for you too, Manager.

Manager: Ah. You also received a fan letter this month, Director.

Manager: Yep. Here you go.

Nagi: ...No good, the bike's completely stalled.

Momiji: Oh no, what do we do now... We're in the middle of the mountains and it's in the dead of night now... I don't think we can call anyone for repairs. Do we start pushing the bike down the path?

Nagi: No, it's ok, this one's a champ. I just have to give it a little nudge to get it started again.

Nagi: This is exactly why Sonia left the tools in my bag. Just wait for a bit, Chief.

Nagi: If you could cheer me on, that would lift my spirits and make me happy.

Momiji: Haha, should I wave an uchiwa* for you? ...Wait, you actually have one!?

Momiji: Um... I'll just hold the flashlight instead, ok?

Momiji: How's this? Can you see clearly?

Nagi: Perfectly. Please hold it up for a bit.

Nagi: Seems like... the problem's here.

Momiji: A balancing act of his happiness... Whenever something fortuitous happens to him, it's guaranteed to be followed by misfortune to balance it out again...

Momiji: Still, something like that is...

Nagi: But the fact is that you ended up being affected by my misfortune too.

Nagi: ...Sorry, Chief. Are you fed up with me now?

Choice 1: I'm surprised rather than fed up

Momiji: I guess I'd say I'm surprised rather than fed up… I can barely believe this is actually a thing. Momiji: But it's also true that I got to experience something that was only possible because I was with you, Nagi-kun. I'm being honest when I say I really learned something today. Nagi:... I guess you're kind to even someone like me, Chief. Thank you.

Choice 2: Not at all. In fact I find it exciting!

Momiji: Maybe it's a little inappropriate to say but... it's kind of like experiencing a thrill ride, I get excited wondering about what's gonna happen next! Nagi: Chief, you're amazing. Your heart is as big as the Pacific Ocean.

Momiji: It's nothing like that.

Momiji: Besides, it must have been really hard on you, to deal with this all on your lonesome. When it's the two of us, we can gain courage from each other to overcome our challenges.

Momiji: Troubles or misfortune, come what may, feel free to share them all with me.

Nagi: ....Ok.

Nagi: Ah, got the engine to start up again, Chief.

Momiji: That's great! Now we just have to head home.

Nagi: Um... before that. I have some place I'd like to take you to, is that ok?

Nagi: If we get a move on now, we should reach it time.... Although, I'll still stay under the speed limit.

Momiji: The coffee I had together with Nagi-kun while watching the sunrise... was very warm and delicious.

*uchiwa is a flat hand-fan that's usually decorated in the style of one's bias in support of them.

*Yajirobe is a term used for Japanese balancing toys. The mechanism involves balancing the main body at a fulcrum and making sure it doesn't tilt too far in either direction before it's balanced again, swinging back like a pendulum.

“Class 3 offense is a societally dangerous act which endangers the authority of the East European Socialist Union government and its social and political order, as well as the socialist order as a whole.

Class 3 offenders are dangerous elements with a disdain for the regime, committing crimes with an intention to destroy it.”

In 1955-1960 class 3 was the most common prisoner class as the state needed a lot of camp labor while class 4 had a problem with lack of designation places and class 2 labor communes were still being built.

Alpine Joins The Howling Commandos

Peggy knew as soon as she met the other Howling Cammandos that they would be a rag-tag group of troublemakers for the SSR

as soon as she saw them in that bar

drunk off their asses and singing like the drunkards they are, not a care in the world

she just knew

so when Steve put together this team and she had gone for her own little investigation and seen there was no medic on said team

she realises that although Steve is courageous, brave, loyal and trust worthy

a good man

he was also a bloody idiot

so, she another little investigation and found a medic for the team

Steve can heal as fast as he likes but he still has teammates with regular healing abilities that may require medical assistance

now Peggy des have a little crush on America's Golden Boy (fucking understatement of the decade) so she's a little particular about the medic she chooses

she wants them to be well read, keeping up to date with all medical advancements that had been happening throughout the war

she wanted them to be quick on their feet and not scared to improvise - lord knows they'd have to do a lot of that with the new weaponry being built by HYDRA

so when she hears of Doctor Andrew Doe, a Korean-American doctor making a name for himself in the front lines by experimenting and sharing his findings with the allied forces

she knows that this is the guy

imagine her surprise when she gets to the bases records show he's supposed to be in to find him gone

she'd managed to get a hold of someone, a young man looking as if he were in a rush but not wanting to be rude to the pretty lady who had ordered him to stand at attention

"Where is Dr Doe, I need to speak with him."

"I'm sorry ma'am, he died a few days ago."

well shit

"His daughter has taken over his research and then some. Names Miss Alpine Doe. She's young looking, but the document's are legitimate."

so now her option is a young looking girl who needed her documents checking

just fantastic

"How young?"

"Certificate says 18 years ma'am."

"Well then. Do you know where she is?"

"Yes ma'am, she was called out to one of the nearby bunkers, they got wound-"

a buzzing interrupts them, the unmistakable sounds of a siren and a vehicle honking as men surrounding them rush to the open area

the truck skids to a halt and the back doors burst open, a young girl climbing out and beginning to pull a stretcher out

"Get me plasma, bandages and morphine. I need as much as we can spare, poor bastard got shot to bits, lucky to be alive right now. Let's get him stable and home to his ma."

surprise was not the word Peggy would use to describe her current emotions, watching this definitely not 18 year old girl work and order the much older men surrounding her

and they listened

"Miss Doe has worked on all of us, ma'am"

it's the young man she'd caught before hand, she turns to look at him and he's got an awestruck look on his face

"Most of us came here wounded, Miss Doe saved most of our lives or at least stabilised us so we could get home to a hospital. She's a fine medic, if that's what you're looking for."

Peggy watches as Alpine and a few of the other men begin to walk back into one of the many tents which held beds for the injured

she can't get far though, before another two trucks come blaring through

perhaps this would be the perfect test

Peggy watches as Alpine assesses her situation, getting a nearby medic to hold the wound she had been previously, running to the first of the trucks

"GSW, left shoulder, straight through."

she turns to the second

"It's bad miss, explosive went off nearby, leg's basically gone."

tutting, she turns back to the tent just as two teams of three come racing out

"Philips, take the first one. Multiple GSW's, three exits. Find the shrapnel, get it out, get him stitched. Taylor, take the second. You,"

She turns to Peggy, a hard look in her eyes

"Get lost or start helping."

the fucking audacity of this kid, does she know who she's talking to

no absolutely not

does she care

is Peggy equip to be a medic?

no, but does that mean she'll sit and let men die?

definitely not, so, she shucks off her coat, rolls up her sleeve and let's alpine guide her into help

and boy is that girl fucking bossy

and mean

"Press harder Carter, jesus do you want this man to bleed out?"

"The man's just lost his leg, give him the bloody painkiller!"

"They should make basic first aid a mandatory skill to learn when you become an agent. Oh wait, they do."

"Carter you're not wrapping a Christmas present for gods sake, faster!"

by the end of it, Peggy is pretty sure she's picked the right person for the job

if anyone was going to be giving medical aid to a group of sarcastic, stupidly cheery and sometimes grumpy men then it should be at least someone who could hold their own

so when all is said and done, they'd managed to get the poor man stabilised and Alpine was organising his immediate transfer out of the unit and to an actual hospital, Peggy approaches

"Miss Doe, I have a proposition for you."

"Unless it's to do with shipments of morphine, plasma, bandages, gauzes, tunicates and all the other supplies I've been badgering everyone about, I'm not intrested."

"I'd like to offer you a position in the Howling Commandos. You'll be working with Captain America, Steve Rogers and his team."

Alpine blinks at her

staring

not moving

before she gestures to the space around her

"I've got men dying as we speak and you want me to drop them just to work with a lab rat and his crew?"

"They need a medic, you are the only one qualified enough. I didn't know about your father, I'm sorry for your loss, but please do not let this be a wasted journey."

Alpine's eye twitches

"You helped save a man and it's a wasted journey?"

Peggy sighs and shakes her head, clearly she's approaching this girl wrong

"I'm simply saying- this isn't the opportunity to skip out on, especially for someone like you."

Alpine knows she's speaking of not only her age but also gender

this was the 1940s after all, not exactly the golden era for women in the military

or medical services

"You're incredibly talented. Captain Rogers and his team need someone like that to keep up with their absolute stupidity."

Alpine laughs, signing the papers she'd been working on and handing them to one of her colleagues before looking at Peggy and offering a smile

"I'm sorry Agent Carter. I made a promise to my eldest brother. No working with Captain America. After what happened with the 107th and the other forces, he's been a bit protective - as much as he can from the front lines. I'm afraid I can't go against my promise to him."

Peggy nods but takes a slip of paper and writes the details she'd need to contact her and hands it to her

"Please, if you change your mind before the war is done, don't hesitate to contact this number."

Alpine nods and the two separate, Alpine returning to her work in the bloodied clothing she'd arrived in and Peggy feeling like she needed a bath after helping remove a man's leg and stitch it up again

it's weeks later when Alpine contacts the number, she'd refused to give any details to the receptionist who picked up but instead managed to organise a way to their base in London

to say Peggy was shocked was an understatement

The Howling Commandos had all come into the meeting room for their first debriefing after destroying the first HYDRA base on Steve's list

and the need for a medic had never been more obvious

Dum Dum had a large gash on his arm and had refused to seek medical assistance, instead stating that it was 'just a graze, it'll heal over night'

absolute bullshit

even Bucky had told him to get help but the man refused, Steve had suggested getting it checked out before the briefing, just to get Peggy off their back (to ease her concerns) and again Dum Dum had refused

imagine the absolute rage on Peggy's face

honestly, these men were the reason's she'd found a grey hair that morning she was sure of it

not that she'd ever mention anything to anyone

She was about to order the man to seek help when the door to the briefing room opened to reveal a worn out Alpine

covered in less blood than when Peggy had left her, eyes darkened with loss and large bags settling in her undereye

her hands were dirty, holding tightly onto two letters, and she looked frailer

"Sorry for the interruption Agent Carter, but she said she had an appointment and insisted-"

"It's quite alright. Miss Doe is a friend."

as she moves closer to the girl, the rest of the men surrounding them take the opportunity to study her

and bucky is in shock

what the hell is a child doing in their briefing room?

seriously, she was what 16? (15 - but he didn't need to know that)

she's there, blood splattered on her sleeves, dirt in her nails and her hair thrown up in a ratty bun

she looked like she came straight from the front lines

but she should have been at home

with her parents

why the hell, was she here?

"I'd like to take you up on your offer, Agent Carter."

Jesus even her fucking voice was a tell-tale sound that she was underaged

and Peggy had made her an offer?

for what?

"I take it your brother changed his mind?"

ah so she had a guardian at least

"My brother died, ma'am."

"Miss Doe.... I'm sorry."

there's a shared moment of silence for the loss before Alpine is looking up and trying to smile at her

"So, if your offer still stands, I'd like to take it."

Alpine spies Dum Dum's arm and thanks god that she carries a satchel of supplies with her everywhere

she'd sold rations for them and was sure she got some odd looks off of people for it but she didn't care

better safe than sorry

Peggy gives her arm a gentle touch before turning to address the men who had been staring at her, a pissed off Bucky included

"Gentlemen, this is Alpine Doe. A little younger then you're all used to-" bucky scoffs, Steve elbows him "-but a great medic nonetheless! She'll be joining you, no arguments."

her words are final and the rest of the team seem fine with it

they jump up, everyone greeting and shaking her hand

normally she'd love meeting people who weren't screaming in her face, but she can't bring herself to truly enjoy the moment, despite the pleasant smiles and pats on her shoulders

Steve offers his hand and she takes it, smiling at him

"Good to have you. We'll take good care you you, like you will us I'm sure."

Bucky is glaring at all of them

they're all idiots

he knew that but jesus

are they truly THIS stupid?

"Are we ignoring the fact that she's an actual child?"

he didn't realise he spoke

truly

he thought he'd spoken to himself

but it came out

and it came out harsher than what he would have liked it

no stopping now, someone had to stand up for the kid

her brother obviously didn't want her here

"I'm 18, Sergeant Barnes."

"And I'm the King of England."

they stare at each other, glaring really

Bucky can see the tears building in Alpine's eyes

he didn't think he was pushing too much

but then again

SHE'S A CHILD

he doesn't push too hard after seeing the tears, actually takes a minute step to comfort her before she's turning her attention to where Dum Dum had sat, now tending to the gash on his arm

distracting herself from the overwhelming frustration building in her stomach

Bucky turns to Phillips

"You're signing off on a kid working with us? Going into HYDRA bases? With their weapons, what's the use of a medic?"

Phillips sighs and shakes his head, frustrated with the entire situation to be honest

"You're still using regular explosives, regular bullets. They ricochet, debris exists, you get a cold, she's there to keep you healthy and on your feet."

"Now, because she's a medic, she'll be a non-combatant member of the Howling Commandos, the only one."

"So let me get this straight. She's an underaged girl-"

Alpine goes to correct him, but he points an accusatory finger at her that shuts her up because it reminds her of her brother

"-that you've let become a medic in the army and now, you're putting her, unarmed, up against weaponry that quite literally vaporises whoever it hits?"

"She's done it before Sergeant, now one more outburst from you and I'll be forced to take disciplinary action!"

Steve elbows him again and he shuts up

he wants to fight for this girl but can't let Steve go out there alone

he hates the fact that this girl is clearly in over her head

and everyone is just letting her

it reminds him of the Steve he knew before the serum

the one who would stop at nothing to get into the war

the one who faced prison for lying on his enlistment papers

was he truly the only person who saw this all for what it was?

the leading of a lamb to slaughter for their own goddamn advantage

that much was shown when they moved out to their next base after the debrief

Alpine had avoided them all after patching up Dum Dum, whose arm had healed beautifully

she went straight home after the meeting and only saw them all again when they were meeting for the plane back abroad

even then, she kept to herself and refused to speak

Bucky would glance over occasionally from where they sat on the plane, watching her read and re-read the same two letters in her hands which she carried in her pockets when her hands were busy working

Steve had sat next to her, trying to coax her into a gentle conversation but she'd answered with little words and left not room for the conversation to continue

when she wasn't reading the letters or working on someone, she was writing in a little blue journal, with a black journal open and glancing between them both

she'd scribble in the black one occasionally but for the most part, the blue journal was the only one she wrote in

what she was doing Bucky didn't know

but it was clear it was important to her

occasionally the others would tease her, trying to get her to open up

but again, they were being blind to the truth about this girl

she was a child and she was grieving

he could see it in the way she's hold her breath when she read the letters

wiping away unshed tears and pulling at her hair

Bucky sighs, nodding to Steve and making him swap seats with him in the tight aircraft, causing everyone to glance up at them

he settles next to Alpine, nudging her when he sat and played it off like he hadn't noticed

if no one else was going to support her

then he'd have to do it himself

500 words written today -- I think I only have one scene left in this chapter, and then I'll probably pick up another 1K in edits. And then I should only have two, maybe three, chapters left of this story! alarming. I am in A Mood today, which is pretty aggravating, and now I have decided to be Worried, which is also extremely annoying. (There are actual IRL reasons for it, it's not out of nowhere.)

“I’ve seen photographs of your wife’s papers, you know,” Dottie said.  “The ones the SSR did up because she didn’t have her own when you arrived.” Great, Steve thought wearily.  At this point he couldn’t even bring himself to be surprised; he knew Lorraine had been the one handling at least some of Natasha’s papers.  All he said was, “So?” “Her papers say she was born the same year the Red Terror started.  She’d be one of the first of us if she is a doll.” Steve bit the inside of his cheek again and swore silently.  Natasha’s papers – War Department identification card, Nansen and U.S. passports, marriage license, enlistment papers – all gave her birth year as 1918, the same year Steve had been born; if you subtracted the icebox years he and Natasha only had six months between them.  Since the Ohio story had gone out the window early on, her papers all said that she had been born in Petrograd in 1918, where no one would expect to be able to find a birth certificate anyway.  They hadn’t been thinking about trying to fool Department X, just giving Natasha some documentation.  Natasha herself had said that she didn’t know the exact year Department X had started, though it had to postdate Stalin’s rise to power. “So?” he said again.  “Do you really think Department X would tell you if one of their golden children had defected?” “Only to put a target on her head,” Dottie agreed readily.

“Now you can draw as much as you want, and I think I have the best autograph of all - on our marriage certificate.” She laughed and then listened to his story. She nodded, her heart once again breaking for him a little, and for their time apart. 

Peggy paused as they walked and hugged him. “You don’t have to fight anymore, unless you choose to join me. And yes, we get to live. We get to share this life together. You don’t have to imagine it, love, it’ll be real. But you can still imagine it - and it’s beautiful.”

Part of her was tired of fighting, too. She hadn’t ever really stopped between her training, the war, and then her cases after. From what Steve had told her, there would always be war, and the SSR - or SHIELD - would always have work to do. She hoped she would find a hobby as well. Gardening, reading, dancing, going to the cinema on date nights…however she filled her recreational time, she would be happy. 

Peggy nodded. “She’s quite a popular lady. We all want to pay our respects.”

Steve hummed in agreement.  “I understand completely.  Trust me, Peg.  I haven’t been taking a lot of time for myself either.  I don’t even think I touched pencil to paper for the past ten years except to fill out reports or sign autographs.”

He turned his head to look at her.  “A strange thing happened to me in the future.  I was fighting this person and she was able to lock me in a vision of my worst nightmare.  In it, I was at the Stork Club and everyone was celebrating but every flash of a camera made me jump and I couldn’t stop looking around for a fight or relax.  And then I saw you and we danced and you told me that the war was over, and I got to go home.  You told me to imagine it.  And then everyone disappeared.  My fear was not being able to ever go home.  Not being able to picture a future for me that wasn’t fighting.  But I’m here now, the war is over.  Peg, we get to go home.  We get to live for us.”

He knew she’d get it.  He knew she’d been living a life of just work and just fighting, and while they’d both gathered friends around them, they still never carved out time to just be quiet and enjoy the little things.  They both deserved that.  He knew she would keep working, and that was fine.  Good even.  He loved her for it.  But she deserved hobbies and vacations too.

They arrived at the display for the Mona Lisa and there was a big crowd around it.  “I guess we’re not the only ones who want to see her,” Steve joked.

Navy SSR 2025 Phase-2 Dates Are Out!
