Herr Schmitt und die Titanen – «Attack on Titan»: Faschismus und Freiheit

An Attack on Titan scheiden sich die Geister: Für die einen Faschismus pur, für die anderen ein Freiheitsepos. Die Wahrheit liegt wahrscheinlich irgendwo dazwischen. Ein Auszug aus COMPACT 8/2021. Hier mehr erfahren.

Seit 107 Jahren lebt die Welt im Ausnahmezustand. Menschenfressende Ungeheuer, riesige Titanen, tauchten plötzlich auf und bedrohen seitdem die humane Existenz. Die Leute verbarrikadieren sich in ihren Städten hinter hohen Mauern. Es gibt ein hartes Notstandsregime, das elementare Rechte der Bewohner mit dem Schutzargument massiv einschränkt.

Man ist dauerhaft eingesperrt, die Regierung propagiert die Entrechtung als Erlösung. Kritisches Hinterfragen wird mit Repression geahndet. Während in der Bevölkerung der Unmut brodelt, verdient die reiche Elite am Elend des kleinen Mannes.

Der junge Eren Jäger wächst in diesen Zuständen auf. Er hasst das Leben hinter Mauern, will ihm entfliehen. Daher spielt er mit dem Gedanken, in die Armee einzutreten: Lieber der Gefahr ins Auge sehen und möglicherweise im Kampf sterben, als eingesperrt zu sein.

Eines Tages passiert das, womit keiner gerechnet hat: Alle Sicherheitsmaßnahmen versagen, die Titanen dringen in die Stadt ein und richten ein Blutbad an. Auch Erens Mutter wird getötet. Nun schließt er sich einem draufgängerischen Aufklärungstrupp an, doch während seiner Militärkarriere kommt er einer gewaltigen Verschwörung auf die Spur: Die Regierung selbst hat in einem geheimen Forschungsprojekt die Titanen erschaffen, um damit jene Bedrohung aufzubauen, mit der sie ihre Diktatur rechtfertigt…

Freund und Feind

Das ist die Handlung von Attack on Titan, einer Manga-Serie des japanischen Zeichners Hajime Isayama, die mit dem 34. Band in diesem Jahr ihren krönenden Abschluss findet. Bekannter ist hierzulande die Anime-Adaption, die seit 2017 in bislang drei Staffeln in deutscher Sprache erschienen ist. Die Reihe ist eine der populärsten, aber auch eine der am kontroversesten diskutierten der letzten Jahre – und erfreut sich in rechtsalternativen Jugendkulturen großer Beliebtheit.

Das hat mehrere Gründe: Zum einen gibt es in Isayamas Epos viele deutsche Bezüge. Das beginnt bei den Namen der Charaktere: Eren Jäger, Levi Ackermann, Jean Kirchstein, Reiner Braun, Annie Leonhardt. Zudem tauchen schon in der japanischen Originalversion zahlreiche teutonische Wendungen auf, etwa «Feiern wir diesen Sieg» oder «Flügel der Freiheit».

Um dem Ganzen noch die Krone aufzusetzen, beginnt das Intro mit der Parole: «Seid ihr das Essen? Nein, wir sind die Jäger!» Es gibt sogar für die Handlung wichtige Anspielungen auf unsere Geschichte.

So nennt sich eine der Stadtmauern «Rose» – tatsächlich ein interner Codename der DDR-Organe für die Berliner Mauer. Die gesamte Szenerie und die mittelalterliche Architektur sind hiesigen Städten wie dem bayerischen Nördlingen nachempfunden.

Neben einem antimodernen Impetus und der Verherrlichung von Nationalismus und Militär gibt es noch einen anderen Grund für die Popularität von Attack on Titan gerade unter Rechten. Schon 2017 stellte der US-amerikanische Youtube-Kanal Wisecrack fest, dass die Reihe auffällige Parallelen zur Philosophie des Staatsrechtlers Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) enthält.

Dessen Freund-Feind-Dichotomie durchzieht die Geschichte wie ein roter Faden. In seinem Werk Der Begriff des Politischen (1927) führte der antiliberale Denker aus:

Die spezifische Unterscheidung, auf welche sich die politischen Handlungen und Motive zurückführen lassen, ist die Unterscheidung von Freund und Feind. (…) Politisches Denken und politischer Instinkt bewähren sich theoretisch und praktisch an der Fähigkeit, Freund und Feind zu unterscheiden. Die Höhepunkte der großen Politik sind zugleich die Augenblicke, in denen der Feind in konkreter Deutlichkeit als Feind erkannt wird.

Politik kann es demnach nur geben, wenn die Möglichkeit besteht, einen Feind zu definieren; die staatliche Ordnung steht dabei stets über der rechtlichen, sodass zur Sicherung des Staatswesens im Ausnahmezustand auch der Bruch oder die zeitweilige Suspendierung der Verfassung legitim seien.

Die gefährlichen Riesen sind in Attack on Titan quasi Raison d‘Être des Staates, in einem Opening wird das Lied «Wer ist Freund, und wer ist Feind gesungen», so als wollte Isayama demonstrativ auf Schmitts Konzept hinweisen. (…) Ende des Textauszugs.

Much as Netanyahu has used an extended crisis and shifting goalposts to justify staying in power and pursuing extraordinary authorities: to the point where the median Israeli is sick of him and sick of the wider war, we need to be on the watch for Trump attempting the same now that we are in a (legally undeclared) war. Its well established that Trump and the crypto-monarchists in his orbit look to other authoritarians, including Orban and Putin, but especially Bibi for validation and for ideas about what to try next.

Expect more attempts to rationalize cracking down on dissent via the Insurrection Act, Alien Enemies, and other technically legal pretexts for authoritarianism that were never meant to apply to our current context. Especially if US service people wind up maimed or injured by Iranian or Iranian proxy retaliation. The fire of Islamophobia is kept alive by martyrs and the jackboots will be eager to exploit anyone whose life was endangered by the President wading into the Israel - Iran war.

Nothing is inevitable about these efforts succeeding, the tide seemed to be turning against Trump before yesterday so there's no real reason to expect a Rally Around the Flag, but keep your head on a swivel.

Do consider being very, very normie coded about your style of dress and any signs/flags you're waving around if you're the type to go out to protest. Its just good optics. If you think there's a chance that conservatives or centrists will hesitate before condemning an anti-war protest where most people are waving American flags, that might be worth considering. But I'm not here to be extra judgy about such things, I haven't been able to hold onto a singular theory of change I believe in without any caveat or exception since 2015. If your theory of change posits that its more important that normies and other anti-war sympathizers see people waving Iranian flags so as to recognize they aren't alone and that it is possible to understand Iran as a complicated place full of people who don't deserve to be victimized for the deeds of their government, then have at it, I can't prove you wrong in any sort of empirical sense.

Early today, the house of the artist and digital activist, Temple of Evil, was raided. Just as, in the case of another journalist, they took his computer and mobile phone. They told him that his case is not publicly available.
