Expert Guidance for Writing a Stellar Statement of Purpose
A Personal Statement, much like a Statement of Purpose (SOP), is your opportunity to shine in the application process. It's your chance to sell yourself and showcase your unique qualities and aspirations. Personal Statements come in two main types:
The General Personal Statement: This type provides you with the freedom to express yourself without strict word limits.
Responses to Specific Questions: Sometimes, graduate schools pose specific questions, and your Personal Statement should directly address these inquiries.
Tips for Crafting an Exceptional Personal Statement:   Before you start drafting your Personal Statement, here are some key tips to keep in mind:
Answer the Specific Questions: Ensure you address each question posed by the graduate school. Tailor your response to fit the question accurately.
Tell Your Story: Graduate committees are eager to hear your personal story. Share your experiences through concrete examples. Make your Personal Statement unique and captivating by weaving your own experiences into the narrative.
Be Specific: Your desire to pursue the program should be logical and rooted in a specific experience from your career, which you should vividly describe in your statement. Your application should emerge as the logical conclusion of your story.
Concentrate on the Opening Paragraph: The lead or opening paragraph is crucial. It's where you grab the reader's attention. This paragraph sets the tone for the rest of your statement.
Show What You Know: In the middle section of your essay, delve into your interest and experience in your field. Be specific about what you've learned and your knowledge of the field. Use professional language to convey your understanding. Mention relevant courses, research experience, job roles, short-term courses, and seminars that demonstrate your suitability for the program.
Conduct Research: Graduate committees often want to know why you've chosen their school over others. Conduct thorough research to highlight what distinguishes your chosen institution, such as research facilities, industry connections, or unique geographical and cultural advantages.
Write with Precision: Grammar and language are essential. Ensure your essay is free from grammatical errors and is well-structured. Clear and concise expression is key. Stick to the stated word limits.
Length and Format: While word limits may vary, aim for around 500-700 words or 1 to 1.5 pages. Use readable fonts like Arial or Times New Roman (size 10-12).

[17/10/24] my favourite season is in full swing. im kinda sad that its my last fall in this gorgeous town, but i don't have enough time to fully appreciate the leaves changing. im telling myself that i just need to grit my teeth for one more week, and then its smooth sailing.
...well ill still have my usual workload + statements of purpose to finish writing. it's really weird that what i do now will decide where im living next year. im excited for what grad school will bring but i don't want to leave this place.
i would 100% do my phd here given the chance but ugh "we're supposed to explore and learn from different places."
anyway. qft calls. im doing the pset which is supposedly the rock bottom of the course, so im looking forward to what the class brings next. im still standing! (drop deadline is next week)

THOM HARTMANN: Science Explains Why Republicans Can’t Accept Trump’s Guilt (Sept. 12, 2023)
Scientists discovered a fascinating reason why Republicans can’t accept criticism of Donald Trump. Thom explains.
In the above video, Thom Hartmann refers to a Raw Story column by cognitive neuroscientist Bobby Azarian, PhD (shown below):
Here are some excerpts from Azarian's column:
In 2009, a study published in PLOS ONE challenged our understanding of belief systems. Researchers placed participants into the confines of an fMRI scanner and presented them with a mixture of factual and abstract statements. The results were illuminating. Disbelief, it turns out, is cognitively demanding. It requires more mental effort than simply accepting a statement as true. From an evolutionary perspective, this preference for easy belief makes sense; a perpetually skeptical individual questioning every piece of information would struggle to adapt in a fast-paced world. What does all this have to do with Trump supporters? Well, it’s far less cognitively demanding for them to believe anything their leader tells them. Any challenge to what Trump tells them is true takes mental work. This means there is a psychological incentive for Trump loyalists to maintain their loyalty. (I wrote about this phenomenon in a slightly different context in the Daily Beast article "Religious Fundamentalism: A Side Effect of Lazy Brains?") Molding of belief: neuroplasticity at play Now, let's consider the unique predicament faced by individuals who staunchly support Trump and want him to again become president. From the moment Trump began his political career and his social engineering career, his supporters have been exposed to narratives — Trump doesn't lie, Democrats are communists, the media is an enemy of the people — that emphasize loyalty and trust in their political idol. These narratives often steer away from critical examination and instead encourage blind faith. When coupled with the brain's inherent tendency to accept rather than question, it creates an ideal environment for unwavering allegiance. No matter that Trump, time and again, has been revealed to be a serial liar, habitually misrepresenting matters of great consequence, from elections to economics to public health. For example, in the Psychology Today article "Why Evangelicals are Wired to Believe Trump’s Falsehoods," I explain that the children of Christian fundamentalists typically begin to suppress critical thinking at an early age. This is required if one is to accept Biblical stories as literal truth, rather than metaphors for how to live life practically and with purpose. Attributing natural occurrences to mystical causes discourages youth from seeking evidence to back their beliefs. Consequently, the brain structures that support critical thinking and logical reasoning don't fully mature. This paves the way for heightened vulnerability to deceit and manipulative narratives, especially from cunning political figures. Such increased suggestibility arises from a mix of the brain's propensity to accept unverified claims and intense indoctrination. Given the brain's neuroplastic nature, which allows it to shape according to experiences, some religious followers are more predisposed to accept improbable assertions. In other words, our brains are remarkably adaptable and continuously evolving landscapes. For ardent Trump supporters, residing in an environment that prioritizes faith over empirical evidence can reshape the neural circuits within their brains. [color emphasis added]

So im deep in the weeks of graduate school applications now and where better to go for help than strangers on the internet. I'm applying to math PhD programs and am seeking advice.
What should I focus on in my statement of purpose? I've gotten conflicting answers. Some people say focus on research, some people say focus on teaching. In my mind my purpose is so clear: go to grad school, learn "the ways," and become a math professor.

I’m considering going to grad school but it’s been a while since I graduated. Where do I start?
i went to grad school straight from undergrad, so take with salt. but here's what i recommend:
step zero figure out what you actually want to do in grad school. many people say they want to go to grad school but are not chasing a question! you gotta chase a question, or multiple question - otherwise, the dissertation isn't going to happen. what keeps you up at night?
look up schools. this is kinda the fun part, it's window shopping. get an idea of where you can see yourself, check who is fully funded (do NOT do a non-fully funded phd program), what their teaching requirements are, their normative time to degree, and so on. are there particular scholars you'd like to work with? particular institutes and programs conducive to your interests? do they require the GRE? make a note of this. be picky bc the applications are expensive out the fucking ass.
once you have a project and list of schols in mind, get in touch with old professors you had positive relationships with that are still teaching/working in academic institutions. think people who would be able and willing to write recs for you.
reach out to people at the schools you're interested in, too, especially during the fall that you're applying. it doesn't guarantee acceptances, but can make an impact.
ask if you can touch base regarding your plans, and perhaps to talk through what you plan to do/what you might want to write a dissertation on.
prepare some draft materials. the book/website The Professor is In has some tips for this, but i think the best tip is just to ask some recent admits in your field to take a look at theirs. you'll need, at minimum, a modifiable personal statement, statement of purpose, diversity statement (however universities are handling this now), and updated, education/research-focused CV. you'll also need 3 recs, and i think at least 2 should be academic people/people who have seen you in academic settings. you should be asking for these at LEAST a month before they're due.
i guess that's the end of the list for how you "start." last thing I'll say is that it's never too early to start drafting your grad school documents. it's easier to have them than not, just like it's easier to have an ongoing CV doc to update than make one from scratch. the more practice you get, the more you'll be able to adapt your writing for opportunities that might arise.

by Dion J. Pierre
The author, PhD candidate Prahlad Iyengar, continued, “One year into a horrific genocide, it is time for the movement to begin wreaking havoc, or else, as we’ve seen, business will indeed go on as usual … As people of conscience in the world, we have a duty to Palestine and to all the globally oppressed. We have a mandate to exact a cost from the institutions that have contributed to the growth and proliferation of colonialism, racism, and all oppressive systems. We have a duty to escalate for Palestine, and as I hope I’ve argued, the traditional pacifist strategies aren’t working because they are ‘designed into’ the system we fight against.”
In a statement distributed by the CAA, Iyengar accused MIT of weaponizing the disciplinary system to persecute him.
“On Friday, MIT administration informed me that as a result of this article, I have been banned from campus without due process and that I face potential expulsion or suspension,” he said. “These extraordinary actions should concern everyone on campus. My article attempts a historical review of the type of tactics used by protest movements throughout history, from the civil rights movement to the struggle to the fight [sic] against South African Apartheid here on MIT campus.”
MIT has not responded to The Algemeiner‘s inquiry regarding Iyengar’s punishment, but according to excerpts of its letter to Iyengar, the administration told him the article “makes several troubling statements” and could be perceived as “a call for more violent or destructive forms of protest at MIT.” In retaliation, CAA is calling on students to harass David Randall, an associate dean, until he relents and revokes Iyengar’s punishment and Written Revolution‘s temporary suspension.
“On Pacifism” is not the first time that elite college students have endorsed violence in the name of opposing Israel and furthering the Palestinian cause.
In September, during Columbia University’s convocation ceremony, Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), a group which recently split due to racial tensions between Arabs and non-Arabs, distributed literature calling on students to join the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas’s movement to destroy Israel.
“This booklet is part of a coordinated and intentional effort to uphold the principles of the thawabit and the Palestinian resistance movement overall by transmitting the words of the resistance directly,” said the pamphlet distributed by CUAD, a Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) spinoff, to incoming freshmen. “This material aims to build popular support for the Palestinian war of national liberation, a war which is waged through armed struggle.”
Other sections of the pamphlet were explicitly Islamist, invoking the name of “Allah, the most gracious” and referring to Hamas as the “Islamic Resistance Movement.” Proclaiming, “Glory to Gaza that gave hope to the oppressed, that humiliated the ‘invincible’ Zionist army,” it said its purpose was to build an army of Muslims worldwide.

FAQ
I see this post is needed.
What is the purpose of this blog?
Analysis of the MCU and its characters, with a main focus on Tony Stark. Why? Because he is the most misunderstood character in the MCU. Sometimes I write/reblog about Comics versions too. This is not a "pure fun" blog, it's a meta blog about a fictional universe. I use sources, facts, educated guesses, all that scientific stuff.
Are fandoms just for "pure fun"?
No, they are for people. People like different things, not just "fun" ones.
"Fun" varies from person to person. My fun is science.
Are Comics Universes and characters the same as the MCU and its characters?
No, they are not. See this post and this one. Examples from different comics universes: 1610 Tony had a "tumor" in his brain, which was actually an Infinity Stone. 616 Tony never had tumors or Infinity Stones in his brain. 9810 and TRN591 Tonys are Sorcerers Supreme, while 616 or MCU Tonys are not. 1610 Nick Fury is African American. 616 Fury is white. I can go on forever.
Does Comics Canon apply to the MCU?
No (see previous question), unless the traits shown in the MCU are the same as in the Comics. Example, Tony Stark has 3-7 PhDs in 616 Universe, but in the MCU he has 2 (see this post). Another example: Steve Rogers had a smoking habit in the comics, but in the MCU he doesn't smoke.
MCU canon is canon only for the MCU. 616 canon is canon only for 616 Universe. 1610 canon only canon for 1610 Universe. The canon of your favorite fanfic is the canon of that fanfic, etc.
Am I anti-Steve?
No, I am not. Do I criticize him? Yes, when there is something to criticize for. The same applies to any other character: Rhodey, Pepper, Wanda, etc. It is science. Deal with it.
Do I hate anyone?
No, I don't feel hate. Can get angry and annoyed though. In this case - sorry if I bite you.
Do I ship Tony with anyone?
I ship Tony with Happiness. If he is happy with Pepper - great. If he is happy with Steve - I ship it. If he is happy with Stephen - I ship it too, and so on. But if they hurt him - I don't like it. Do you expect me to like it? What would be weird. The ideal option is when everyone is happy, loves and cares about each other.
How to react if I wrote a comment on your post/reblog of my post?
If you're open to discussion, great, that's what comments are for. If you are overly sensitive, can't stand other people's opinions, or deliberately ignore the facts, then it is your right to ignore my comments. And it is my right to write them. Remember that. It is called "communication", and that's what Tumblr and other social networks are for. If you cannot communicate with other people - talk to yourself.
Will I come to your post to write a comment about how wrong you are?
Am I so terrifying? If I see something is wrong, like 2+2 is stated as 5, and not 4, I will probably tell you about it. But I don't do it for headcanons. Headcanon is your HEADcanon. You can have any headcanon you want. It is your right 100%. But if your statement about CANON is incorrect and I can prove it - I can come to you. Remember, it is my right to do so.
Examples:
You have a headcanon that MCU Tony is of Italian descent. I will not correct you because the MCU never mentions what his origin is.
You stated that MCU Tony has a drinking problem. I will come to correct you, because this is not true and I proved it here.
If you said 616 Tony has a drinking problem, I will not correct you because it's true.
You said that in fanfic N a kitten was saved by Clint, but it was actually Natasha. If I read that fanfic, I will come to correct you.
I think it's fair.
To summarize: if you say/write something - be ready to prove your words. That's how it works in real world, that's how it should work online. If you deliberately lied or slandered someone, even if it's a fictional character, there must be consequences.
Do you have any questions?
Ask anything - my doors are always open. And I don't block people if I don't like what they say.

Botany AU
I love the bioluminescent hotarukazura plants in Bleach specifically because they are never mentioned again, but it makes sense that Kuukaku and her often-itinerant mostly-underground, off-grid house would want alternative sustainable lighting. It's a woody creeping vine, so is it like a kudzu, and grows like the dickens? Is it indigenous to Junrinan--and all regions of Junrinan--or are Kuukaku and her itinerant house spreading aggressive bioluminescent invasives? Is it normally bioluminescent, or is the hotarukazura a specific cultivar? (While we’re at it, what about the boars?)
If grows wild (either indigenously or as an invasive) the forests out there must be LIT. 🥁
Ishida is asking all the right questions, and he's so cute about it ToT:

[Bleach 079]
I'm fascinated by the Soul Society energy grid in general. They seem to make use of many options all at once. We've seen things lit by plant; we've seen electrical wires and transformers; we know that they can plug in laptops that look imported but who knows, are maybe proprietary SRDI laptops that have had their aesthetic toned down. We've seen things lit by torch, and by kidou (though idk if that's reproducible at scale). There's some sewers and some wells and maybe they have hydropower. They have lots of wood. Do they have oil? Natural gas? Nuclear? The KIDOU CANNON?
But back to Ishida. Honestly, I am open to whatever careers the gang chooses to pursue in the epilogue. Ishida, doctor, sure why not. But WHAT IF he decided to be a professional Plant Guy instead??? When he applies to Botany PhD programs, he could write about all of his adventures in cryptobotany in his Statement of Purpose. Like, he is consistently our Plant Guy (even when the plants are rocks):
