maybe this is a luddite position, but noticing that generative ai has greatly reduced the functionality of former mainstay search engines is reasonable to point out, even in cases where the search engine has degraded over time prior to their chatgpt parts.

I always forget about ao3 functions. Literally only realised you could private bookmarks recently and I only found out you could view statistics like last week. What do you mean there’s a few hundred people subscribed to you and get silly little emails when you post? What a weird little site. But very funny to see other people’s reviews I’m sure the vast vast majority of yours are AMAZING. that's the beauty of fanfiction, isn't it? i can make my character anything i want them to be. it can be "realistic" or it can be out of pocket or it can be a mixture of both. nobody can stop me in fanfiction. nobody can tell me how i'm "SUPPOSED" to write Charles, because... it's fucking fiction.

I think one damning thing about the stupidity of Elon musk changing twitters name is that if you examine Google trends for the terms "Elon musk twitter" and "Elon musk X" you can see that there twitter is still consistently searched twice as much as X, even when people are searching specifically for the man who made the bame change. (I can't even just compare "twitter" and "x" because the SEO of X is dogshit).

There's only one time period where that trend is broken, September 21st to September 24th, and even then X is at most equal with twitter

And while making this post I was a little derailed because I've also noticed something interesting about the maps Google Trends generates. There is variation depending on what time range you use, but there is a clear bias towards X in certain regions of the United states

I think the biggest thing that is necessary to take into consideration with tumblr polls is that tumblr is 1) THE mischievous responder bias website and 2) tumblr is not a WELL designed website (it just fails to be actively hostile like its "peers") and that creates noise that people can't really control. Getting a rigorous survey is one of the more difficult problems in statistics because potential sources of bias are popping out of every detail, but tumblr in particular makes effectively no effort to control that bias (and introduces several unique sources of its own).

All that is to say if you want to run a poll that's any more rigorous than "hehe just for fun" you kind of have to approach it from the beginning intending to use outside tools to count exact numbers of votes and be ready to do some math to get around the site's limitations.
