Pinocchio took a small step back as Mary stepped forward, his arms held out like a shield. For the first time in ages, he was perfectly willing to admit he was afraid. No, scratch that; he was fucking terrified.

"Look, okay," he said, "so I said your name three times, and that was probably a majorly stupid mistake, right?"

"And you wouldn’t exactly hurt a little kid, would you?"

Not once, in three whole centuries, had that gambit ever actually worked. But hey, he was running out of options here.

[ Aww, wasn't he adorable, with his tiny arms in front of his face, his tiny legs flinching with every step she approached him more and more, until there was no way to walk away from her anymore. It was cute, how these kids are all brave enough to call her, beside the s t o r i e s they heard about her, and in the next moment they were so defensive and full of fear. Mary enjoyed these especially. ]
