Yesterday, Anakbayan New York joined the International Coalition for Human Rights of the Philippines (@ichrp_us) in condemning the Mindanao Indigenous People’s Council of Elders (MIPCEL) in selling out ancestral domain to private corporations for kickbacks, and harassing and red-tagging Lumad schools and clearing their communities to make way for mines and plantations. In this fight against the militarization of indigenous land, we call for Filipinos to join us for the People’s State of the Nation Address on July 22nd as we call for the cut of US aid going to military and police in the Philippines, and end the corporate plunder of our land! . 📸: Henry Luna . #StopLumadKillings #EndForcedDisplacement #EndMartialLawInMindanao #DefendSovereignty #Rise4Rights https://www.instagram.com/p/BzesvkzgGZE/?igshid=thoo6i69n8lq

-- As we celebrate international children's day to recognize the rights of children, it is just right to continue the call for the strengthening of human rights that the Filipino children deserve. The national minorities, one of the most marginalized group in the country, is proof of the worsening violence and poverty in the Philippines, in spite of the fact that we have overflowing natural resources. Although we have the Indigenous People's Right Act (IPRA) of 1997 and although we are part of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous peoples (UNDRIP), the exploitation and killings continue, along with the lack of basic social services such as rights for proper health and education. According to the Minority Rights Group, most of the out-of-school children belong to the indigenous people. It is extremely hard to finish education as an IP, as they have to endure crossing kilometers of rivers and dangerous mountains. Aside from this, they often receive discrimination in an educational system not tailored to their cultural needs and sensitivities. Fortunately, there are organizations like Alcadev and Save Our Schools Network that help each other to make way for an alternative education that strives for a national, scientific and mass-oriented education. However, the students continue to suffer because of the continuing attacks of military and paramilitary groups that forcibly enters their communities. Red-tagging and the accusation of Lumad children as members of the NPA causes enforced disappearances and killings of IPs, also causing trauma and fear among the communities. There are also aerial bombings, intimidation and harassment, destruction of school facilities, and use of school facilities for military operations. There is also a threat of closure for their schools. Despite all these, the Filipino children must remain firm, and continue to dream and actively partake in the fight for a more just and peaceful society.

When I stand in my backyard in Oakland, California, I survey my two little garden boxes and handful of pots with a mix of pride, embarrassment and longing. Proud that the tomatoes overflowed for months, embarrassed that the worms in my compost bin died after three days, and longing for real space to cultivate food.
An ocean away, at the Salupongan School for Talaingod Manobo youth in Nasilaban, I was following a group of high school students out to their “backyard,” an expansive hilly terrain where thick green grass and banana trees grow out of the clay soil anywhere that hasn’t already been carefully cultivated. We spent about fifteen minutes weeding a hill with curved dull knives as long as my forearm – a task I had to be re-taught several times.
All of a sudden, we were planting the okra seeds our delegation had donated. The students quickly dug little holes and within twenty minutes, my group of ten teenagers had sewed seeds across the whole hill. Everywhere around us we could see the vegetables almost ready to harvest–some even planted with other expo delegations from last summer.
And yet despite the apparent aliveness of the land, every day at school, we ate rice flavored with instant noodles. The Lumad people we talked to all had trouble feeding their families even one meal a day.
Why? One Datu (tribal leader) told us if they have livestock and a thriving garden, the military will tag them as a member of the New People’s Army and harass them. Two villages over in Sambulungan, the community has been forced to evacuate so many times because of constant harassment by the AFP and the paramilitary group, the Alamara, they’re afraid to replant their farms, for fear they will be attacked and displaced again.
As much as I have a right to my little garden beds, the Talaingod Manobo and all indigenous people have more of a right to feed themselves by cultivating their own land. I long to come back to Nasilaban and see the garden overflow with rice, vegetables and fruit trees. I long to see the kids harvest side by side with their parents and feed their school, village and beyond. I long for them to teach us all the meaning of the expression “Land is Life.”

Naglalaho. Nauubos. Nawawala.
End the continuous killings of Filipino indigenous people, and the violation of their human rights. Until now, the indigenous people still call to be heard, and their pleas to be answered. In Barangay Ucab, Itogon, Benguet, their suffering continues with the entry of mining corporations. In Surigao, the attacks on Lumads continue, along with the killing of their leaders, and the warning for closure of their schools. President Duterte even warned their communities would be bombed. There's also the killing of Datu Victor Danyan, 10 months ago, because of ancestral land dispute and the entry of DMCI in South Cotabato, Mindanao. Various offenses and violence are received by the indegenous people: forced entry and exploitation of natural resources that results to killings, landgrabbing that causes displacement and bloodshed, discrimination and violation of human rights such as name-calling, red-tagging, etc.; and the recruitment by government forces and other armed forces of young indigenous people for their own interests, along with the interests of the ruling classes— causing killings between the natives.

“In the evacuation camps, I taught “hangman" once to help a few girls practice English vocab and days later, walked into their "dorm" to find they were using it to study with other students. Went to boys dorm and they were playing it on their chalkboard too! It's a game whose morbidity most Americans are desensitized to, including myself. I almost regretted using it. But at the same time, dark but relevant content and humor in their learning system is common. This game made sense to them. 🔺As much as they hate English vocab, they don't wanna see yet another person die an unjust death!🔺#stopLumadkillings”
