Arvo Pärt: Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten (Remastered 2015).
The first time I listened to Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten, I was overcome by an overwhelming emotion, as quiet as it was absolute. I felt a purity that was difficult to name, as if the music had enveloped me in an intimate space, suspended outside of time. In that moment, I understood that this was not merely a composition, but a form of sonic prayer that spoke directly to the soul, with a nakedness that transcended language.
This work by Arvo Pärt, in its 2015 remastered version performed by the Staatsorchester Stuttgart under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies, begins and ends with a single toll of a bell. That sound, deep and suspended, does more than mark the opening and closing: it contains the spiritual architecture of the entire piece and wraps it in an atmosphere of transcendence.
The initial bell is not a mere effect or incidental gesture. It is a sonic ritual. A low, suspended tone that stops time. Its slow, mournful vibration introduces a space of active silence, almost liturgical. Pärt is not seeking to move us through accumulation, but through purification. The toll marks the threshold between the everyday and the spiritual. And it does so with an austerity that moves more deeply than any orchestral climax. I remember clearly the first time I heard this piece: I was left frozen. Not only by its beauty, but by the sensation of absolute suspension, as if sound and silence had merged into a single substance.
From that first strike, the string texture unfolds in a descending canon in D minor. It develops with the implacable logic of time, yet breathes with the cadence of a prayer. The compositional technique based on parallel resonances—one of the most refined hallmarks of Pärt’s mature language—reveals itself here with moving clarity. Each note seems to contain a world; each silence, an echo of the invisible.
In the final cadence of the strings, where harmony seems to dissolve slowly, there is a gesture of farewell devoid of drama. The return of the bell, at the exact moment when everything seems to fade, is not merely a formal closure. It is a response without words. As if the music, on the verge of extinction, returned to its origin to remind us that every resonance, even the most fleeting, leaves a trace in the air and in memory.

In 1971 German architect/engineer Frei Otto (1925-2015) was honored with an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, directed by Ludwig Glaeser and followed by the present eponymous catalogue, published by MoMA in 1972. The exhibition took a place at a time when Otto had already established his Institut für leichte Flächentragwerke at Stuttgart University, designed the German pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal but arguably his most prominent work, the Olympic Stadium and adjacent facilities of the 1972 Olympics in Munich wasn’t yet completed. Still, the catalogue includes Frei Otto’s models of the latter project just as well as numerous other models and completed works from the 1950s and 1960s.
The catalogue is a wonderful, richly illustrated historic document that showcases some two decades of Frei Otto’s already impressive work and I was more than happy when I read the recent newsletter of Fachbuchhandlung Karl Krämer in Stuttgart: they announced that they had received some copies of the catalogue from the vaults of the Institut für leichte Flächentragwerke. Luckily I ordered soon enough to finally be able to add the volume to my library!

Just saw phantom live at west end and wow! The sets were big! Now I wonder if other replicas had bigger sets.
For a second I read that as "West End Live", AKA the annual concert thingie with led screens... And I was like HUH?

Then I understood what you meant. Heh.
First and foremost, I am so happy you had a good time at POTO. It is a beautiful show. I am a huge fan of Maria Bjørnson's set and costume design, and still today - some 30 years after I became a fan - I can be utterly floored by certain scenes.
As far as set size goes West End is actually one of the smaller. Not SMALL, but smaller. Some of the biggest to date include (in no particular order):
The Las Vegas production 2006-2012, with its especially-built theatre with gigantic stage, dome, and "chandelier in pieces". Huge production, larger-than-life details.

The original Hamburg production 1990-2001. Another theatre built to house Phantom (and today one of the top musical theatre buildings in Germany). Extremely wide stage, to the point where Maria Bjørnson was not entirely happy with the proscenium layout. It didn't blend as well as elsewhere. In some scenes it also felt like the cast literally had to run across stage to get into position in time. Oh Hamburg. Needless to say, they narrowed the stage for the revival 2013-2015.

The Stuttgart production 2002-2004 also featured a big stage. I can't tell if it was bigger than Neue Flora in Hamburg or not, but it was in the same vein.
Oh! But also the original Los Angeles production (1989-1993). Massive proscenium and stage. And yet I don't have a single good photo showing the proscenium or its scale. Hmpf.
I would also mention the World Tour, which has toured in at times huge arenas. It didn't necessarily make the proscenium bigger, but they sometimes did the extended side sculpture look, where there is a drape structure under the sculptures. This was the case when I saw the show in the fairly brand new Zorlu Theatre in Istanbul 2015:

This could even be considered one of the smaller World Tour stages. In other cases they've been in huge operas or also arenas. Again, it doesn't necessarily mean the set-up on stage is bigger, but it does something with the overall scale. Here's Hong Kong 2014:

Compared to these Her Majesty's Theatre is way more intimate, both in Maria Bjørnson's original proscenium design and chandelier:
And the new wider and angel-less design for the revival:
Just to continue showing the range of set-ups... I suspect one of the smallest stages they've performed the show has been in Copenhagen. The stage is tall, but narrow, and quite cramped backstage. They were originally told no when they wanted to do the show, due to the backstage and understage space. But they came up with lots of methods to make sets foldable, collapable or deconstructable, and hoisting furniture and set pieces up in the air. And they made it work. Very well! But this production didn't feature any side sculptures, just like the riginal Stockholm production where they got the sets from, to not obstruct side view of the already narrow stage.

Now compare those proportions (and especially the Golden Angel, which I don't think differ a lot in size between productions) to the Las Vegas stage... quite the difference, both with and without the side boxes in the auditorium.

...and that has been today's proscenium and stage nerding... Hah!

Meet Wilhelma Zoo’s Gorillas - Silverback Tools and Antics Cause Tumble by SloggerVlogger *Meet the Gorilla troop from the Wilhelma Zoological-Botanical Garden in Stuttgart.* Silverback Kibo shows clever tool use, using a stick to pull a tree branch within reach to enjoy its leaves. Mimi looks graceful as she sits on a log. The group enjoys their food, but Undi isn’t impressed with Masani’s antics. Masani takes things too far, causing poor old Mimi to tumble. A closer look introduces you to the other fascinating members of this troop. There is a little more to come over the coming weeks, including a premiere ( a longer length videos where you can join the live chat. ) Silverback Kibo was born at the Kölner Zoo on the 24th October 1990 and got moved to Zoologisch-botanischer Garten Wilhelma on the 17th September 2001. His offsprings are Lengai, Meru, Shira, Mawenzi, Kimbali, Milele, Tonda, Masani, Pelu. Female Gorilla Mimi was born in October 1963 in Cameroon. Everyone, meet Victor!
Adopted from an event with @ranger-rai and now home in Fiore. 'Victor' was already his nickname, and I intend to keep it. But I think joining a new family is an occasion momentous enough for a middle name, so officially his full name is Victor Jacima (Aiello). He's an ex-battler but will hopefully be having some peace and quiet now. I decided to gently introduce him to the region with a nice walk aound Lyra forest.
//ooc Victor's tag will be "Victor'y Garden"

Cybertruck bomber Matthew Livelsberger worked in special forces overseeing drone operations and maintenance, The Post has learned — as he is pictured for the first time, wearing camouflage and posing with a rifle atop a snowy mountain.
Livelsberger, 37, was last stationed at Camp Panzer Kaserne just southwest of Stuttgart, Germany, where he worked as a remote and autonomous systems manager for the Army.
In that position, Livelsberger was responsible for the “operations, maintenance and integration” of drones in the military, according to the Army.
Livelsberger’s military experience was highly focused on technology and engineering, working a series of Army roles that had him working intimately with some of the most critical intelligence capabilities in the special forces.
He also joined the Green Berets in 2006, first as a communications specialist until 2015, working with military communications systems such as computers and radio, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Livelsberger had been in the Army for at least 19 years — leaving him just one year away from full military retirement benefits.
He previously served from 2015 to 2023 as a special forces intelligence and operations specialist, meaning he would have had access to highly sensitive military information. His work in that role involved studying the enemy with biometrics, cultural studies, technical data analysis and vulnerability assessments, as well as targeting.
Prior to taking on his most recent drone manager role, he worked as a special forces operations manager and team sergeant in the Army, where he listed his responsibilities as “personnel, project and risk management, operation planning, field and security operations and technology integration” on his LinkedIn profile.

He also listed a contract position with General Dynamics from 2011 to 2012 as a hyperspectral imaging integrator, during which he “engineered and fielded the first mobile standoff hyperspectral imaging ‘Lightguard Minotaur’ system,” his profile states.
Hyperspectral imaging is a highly advanced technological capability that allows operators to analyze objects and terrain beyond what the naked eye can see.
He listed his skills in that position as “explosives detection, government contracting, technology integration and technical writing.”

Musical asks: 6, 16, 22?
6. favourite musical you’ve seen live
Ahh... If I have to like the specific production I saw as well, it's POTO Finland (2015-2024... rip it's on for the last time this year and I won't be able to go...). Also Wicked Finland 2010-2011 was very very special!!! I think those are some of my favourite shows to see live because they're Big shows with big ensembles and sets and lots of colourful action happening on stage. And I like the music and story in each (... neither is perfect, but there's so much to appreciate).
Sadly the inverse (really like the show but didn't like seeing it live) is more common for me...... tdv is one of my favourite musicals of all time and yet it was one of the worst-directed/acted things I've seen (Stuttgart 2021) jffjfj. I don't know what's good for me so I'm going to see it in Hamburg in a few weeks.......... let's see how I feel then...
16. - already answered!
22. favourite musical to sing along to
I would say Les Mis!! It's one of those shows where you semi-frequently find people irl to sing along to with haha (= most "theatre kids" know and like the show). It's not impossibly difficult and has both extremely dramatic solos and a lot of group numbers and duets which are also fun. As for me... as for me... (when by myself): I spent like a year practicing the title song from Cabaret before finally doing a little public performance of it hehe jsjdjdjd so I got pretty used to singing it to myself in the shower and while doing dishes and such >:) But that's only one song so doesn't really count
