First of all, welcome to the Skeleton Clique. We have tacos.

Second of all, buckle up, because this fandom is wild and can seem intimidating.

You'll see people joking about "mocha eyes and C major lips". If you wanna know where that's from, google "forest fic" at your own risk and not at work or school.

Speaking of which, yeah, you'll see some people who ship Tyler and Josh. Nowadays, especially since Tyler and Josh both have wives and Tyler has three kids, it's more of an inside joke in the fandom (which the boys are totally in on 'cause they do act a little flirty with each other onstage and in interviews). But back in the Vessel and Blurryface days, some fans took that ship VERY seriously, like, threatening-the-boys'-real-life-partners seriously. Don't do that.

You'll see people crossing all their ø's and saying stuff like "smøl bean", "fren", "it's twenty øne piløts not 21 pilots" and "fake fan". Most of those people are just ironically making fun of how cringe the fandom was during the Blurryface era, but there are still a few people who cross all of their ø's unironically.

Especially on Tiktok, you'll see a lot of fans who wear TØP merch almost daily and have rooms plastered in TØP merch and get barricade for every single tour and can perform every single high-speed rap from memory. That's the minority of the fanbase. You're no less of a fan if all you have is a plain green jacket that you added red or yellow tape to and you struggle with remembering lyrics. What matters is that you enjoy the music and want to connect with other people who enjoy the music.

Especially on Reddit, you'll see adults asking if they're too old for the fandom. And in their comments, you'll see the same message over and over again: There is no age requirement. When I went to my first TØP concert, I met several people my age, a few people my parent's age, and one elderly couple who was seeing TØP for their 14th time.

Also, a warning if you're a POC: you might face some shit in the fandom. As a non-black POC, the most I've got is people telling me to "not take things so seriously" when I bring up certain issues. Which does hurt a little. However, other POC within the fandom, especially black people within the fandom, have experienced MUCH worse. In fact, one horrific case caused Tyler to write this very heartfelt and much-needed message:

So, there you have it. This fandom might seem weird or intimidating or toxic at times, but once you get in, it'll feel like home. It won't always be peaceful, but you're gonna find some genuinely supportive people within who will help you get through what you're going through in life. Your kind will be on your side <3

Shockwave is uncannily good at Jenga. He will pick out that single block precariously supporting the top half of the tower all by itself and he will swipe it so fast that the top half falls neatly onto the rest without even shaking. Oh, that’s against the rules? Since when were scientific advancements made by following the rules?

He’s pretty indifferent? To 98% of humankind? But you can occasionally catch him doing some light reading over the Stanford Prison Experiment or the Milgram Experiment. Ethically dubious psychological studies are to Shockwave what 10k word coffeeshop AU fluff fics are to the average Internet gremlin.

Don’t ask him for his opinion on high fashion. He is unimpressed, he does not care, and the cut of the material is always exceedingly illogical. Why do humans do that. Why do they insist on impractical ornamentation.

I feel like Shockwave likes axolotls. He thinks they are genetically fascinating and would love to do some hands-on research on them, once he has the time. He’s got bigger things to worry about at the moment, in more than one sense.

Shockwave making monetary contributions to scientific journals. It’s a marginal and cursory task, but considering that he will occasionally glance over at what his inferior and fleshy peers in science are working on, and that he is a respectable Science Man himself, it isn’t that much time wasted. Let the small organics have their monetary support from an offshore and dubiously valid bank account.

Yes, he does get the memes that you throw at him. Yes, he did look up Lucky Luciano and Bongo Cat, as well as original context and proper usage. He’s a scientist. His job is to know things and he’s got something of an ego underneath the cold logic. You think he’s going to let a human memer confound him? No, never. He gets the memes. He is more than capable of producing a counter-meme. He just doesn’t care because it has no bearing on his work.

It’s hard to get a reaction out of this guy because he’s carefully hidden under layers of objective and single-minded Science, but I guarantee you that if you, his human buddy, give him a tiny peck on the claw or faceplate or shoulder or whatever, and say “s m o r c h,” then his audial fins will absolutely just flatten and something in his soulless optic will look like it died a little.

Shockwave singing “My Heart Will Go On.” It will absolutely never happen, but it’s funny to think about, and he will be hilariously affronted at the suggestion. As if he’s not a sucker for Celine Dion.

Honestly, even the fact that he deigns to react to a human frendo’s machinations just goes to show the esteem he holds them in, even if he’s got -.5 touchy-feely points.

JunsKitchen: Japanese guy (married to an American woman) teaches you how to make Japanese food in the most satisfying way possible. Also he has the best cats. 11/10 soothing. Also his channel with his wife about living in Japan, Rachel and Jun, is very good. 

TV/Movies

Star Trek: ya know, star trek. My mom grew up watching it with her dad, and I grew up watching it with her. It might not have the same ~deep personal meaning~ for you, but I’ve always found it very comforting. I think the franchise has a very optimistic vision of the future, which a lot of sci-fi doesn’t. I’d say the most approachable series is The Next Generation, if you’re a newbie. Reboot movies are v good, too. All the series are on Netflix, and the reboot movies are on Amazon with Prime. (CW: Space wars and aliens and stuff)

The Great British Bake-Off: y’all know about this. Just a bunch of British people baking stuff in a tent and being kind and supportive of one another. Incredible. On Netflix.

John Mulaney stand-up specials : y’all are tumblr, so I know you know about him too. Relatable, generally wholesome, non-problematic comedy. And there’s 3 of them on Netflix. (CW: cussing, sexual/drug humor)

I’m also gonna throw Queer Eye into the category of “Y’all been know”

The Good Place: A show about a mix-up in the afterlife. Very funny and the show is always 85 steps ahead of you. There’s no gore or anything. Death is more of a setting used to talk about philosophy and what makes a good person. Also they make so many deeply, deeply accurate jokes about Jacksonville, FL (CW: Death)

British Panel Shows: I always end up watching these when my brain isn’t up to exploring. They’re like game shows but all the contestants are British comedians. My favorites are QI, Would I Lie To You?, and The Big Fat Quiz Of Everything. In the U.S., I find the best way to watch them is on YouTube. Also good for background noise. (CW: swearing, sexual humor)

Psych: a comedy show where a dude pretends to be a psychic to help solve crimes. It’s good for people like me who love crime shows but also hate suspense. Based on personal experience, I wouldn’t have watched it on my worst days, but I enjoy it now as an alternative to shows that are supposed to be spooky. It’s available on Amazon Prime video. (CW: crime, violence, death, sometimes suicide)

Books: 

The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers: A very Queer space adventure. It’s similar to firefly in concept, but without all of the darkness and evil and sudden but inevitable betrayal. Also I just really need it to become a fandom so I can waste more time on this site.

Turtles All The Way Down by John Green : I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest John Green fan, and while this is not my favorite book of all time or anything, I really appreciated its portrayal of OCD and anxiety in a very real, but not over-dramatized way.

If At Birth You Don’t Succeed by Zach Anner : A very funny memoir about life with a disability that is very encouraging without being a self-help book. 

I’m A Stranger Here Myself by Bill Bryson: observations on American life by a dude who has lived in England most of his life. I blame this book for my Dad humor. 

Twitter Accounts:

Thoughts Of Dog : it is the thoughts of a dog. and his adventures with his human. and his stuffed fren sebastian. his feets. are a tippy-tappin. 

Lin-Manuel Miranda: He wrote Hamilton. He also writes good morning and goodnight tweets that are very encouraging. They have also now been adapted into a book called GMorning, GNight! 

Apps To Play While You Panic:

Gerrymander: a game where you literally just gerrymander voting districts. In a very satisfying, though morally reprehensible way. 

Amazing Katamari Damacy: Basically an app version of Katamari Damacy, where ur a lil space dude who rolls stuff into a big ball so ur dad can turn it into a planet. Or something.

I Love Hue: a game where you sort jumbled-up colored squares to make a pleasing gradient. It also plays soothing music and gives you confusing, but very nice compliments when you win. This app literally got me through a panic attack on a train at night in a foreign country, which is about the highest marks I can give anything. 

Go forth and fight ur brain goblins with a sword.
