The Canadian Rockies may have risen up to 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) approximately 70 m.y.a. Once mountain formation ceased, erosion carved the mountains into their present rugged shape. The erosion was first due to water, then was greatly accelerated by the Quaternary glaciation 2.5 million years ago. Glacial landforms dominate Banff's geomorphology, with examples of all classic glacial forms, including cirques, arêtes, hanging valleys, moraines, and U-shaped valleys. The pre-existing structure left over from mountain-building strongly guided glacial erosion: mountains in Banff include complex, irregular, anticlinal, synclinal, castellate, dogtooth, and sawback mountains.

Many of the mountain ranges trend northwest to southeast, with sedimentary layering dipping down to the west at 40–60 degrees. This leads to dip slope landforms, with generally steeper east and north faces, and trellis drainage, where rivers and old glacial valleys followed the weaker layers in the rocks as they were relatively easily weathered and eroded. Classic examples are found at the Banff townsite proper: Mount Rundle is a classic dip slope mountain. Just to the north of the Banff townsite, Castle Mountain is composed of numerous Cambrian age rock formations. The uppermost section of the peak consists of relatively harder dolomite from the Eldon Formation. Below that lies the less dense shales of the Stephen Formation and the lowest exposed cliffs are limestones of the Cathedral Formation. Dogtooth mountains, such as Mount Louis, exhibit sharp, jagged slopes. The Sawback Range, which consists of nearly vertical dipping sedimentary layers, has been eroded by cross gullies. The erosion of these almost vertical layers of rock strata in the Sawback Range has resulted in formations that appear like the teeth on a saw blade. Erosion and deposition of higher elevation rock layers has resulted in scree deposits at the lowest elevations of many of the mountains.

Calico Fault, Mojave Desert

One of the best geological anticlines (folds up) and synclines (U or V shaped) in the world, often used as the textbook example of both.

(My photo) I started camping in the adjacent campground during 2021 because SEXAY ROCKS to self-isolate on the drive to visit my parents in Utah.

But I'm not a geologist, just a rock groupie, so I'm happy to find a great short video Explaining The Thing.

Edit: I swear that's my own photo at top; if you look closely the vegetation's different. l I guess we both headed for the same corner of the parking lot for the best view!

lo: the two shots I made for the short film project 'pathfinder' directed by NAZ NXT (ناز ) for a little contest that a certain animation discord was running.

the film was planned to be a 2D-in-3D project, but the 2D animators all ended up dropping out in the end. the main thing I worked on was sculpting and painting this mountain, and doing the lighting and broader environment.

here are some still shots of the mountain under more naturalistic lighting (some WIPs from earlier in the project):

the main ridge in the foreground here involved a massively complicated UV unwrap as I tried to get the texture coordinates even and non-overlapping everywhere. later I simply resorted to projecting the texture along the axis of the syncline-anticline fold system (I decided 'oooh what if there was an anticline fold' when I was texture painting), which actually worked just fine! because that's how geometry works! if I'd done it that way on the other ridge, and done a separate unwrap for the details texture, I could have saved myself a lot of trouble. lesson learned lmao!

geologically this is a tad questionable - this isn't really how sandstone strat would tend to erode. when I was sculpting, I hadn't really decided on the underlying geology, so I couldn't really take that into account. that said, for a first time making a sandstone mountain entirely by hand, I'm pretty happy with how it came out! if I were to do a project like this again, I would probably create a worldspace shader to show the rock strata so I could see them while sculpting.

the images above use a Nishita sky, but Naz wanted something more dramatic, so for the final film, I made this wonderful sphaghetti of a shader:

which essentially maps the sky into polar coordinates and creates the sun, and the glow around it, using various combinations of noise and gradient maps. I'm really happy with how it came out.

for the contest Naz edited together a trailer as our submission - not sure if he's planning to upload it anywhere. in any case, though we didn't manage everything we set out to do, this project was still a lot of fun and I'm very happy with the bit I did.

I've recently had quite the craving for hanahaki disease au roleplays. I'm not picky as far as characters go, I have two main ones I'd like to use right now that my roleplay partner can choose from. They're all very complicated, so I am going to keep their descriptions brief.

Avemour - A 7 foot tall fantasy creature of mixed heritage, serves as the oldest princen of an empire. They use any pronouns with no preference. He's pan and demi, so any romance would need to be built up for a bit before the love and disease could take hold. Avemour is very heavily traumatized in their backstory, with themes of cannibalism, child abuse, murder, and more. Despite this, or more accurately because of it, they are actually quite a sweetheart, and value others more than anything. They have trust issues though.

Syncline - A half human, half demon librarian. They collect books from all sorts of cultures, human, monster, and everything in between. They identify as non binary, and are bisexual with a slight male preference. Do not let this discourage female characters, though! Syncline is very reserved for the most part and quite shy, save for when the topic is books or languages or when talking to a close friend. Syncline is very affectionate with said close friends, and would be very affectionate with a love interest as well.

I roleplay direct on Tumblr, through dms or posts I don't mind. I have a separate blog for Avemour ( @falseangelsflair ) but would use my main for Syncline.
