Spoilers for Solek's journey

I'm glad that Solek is with us in the resistance but I wonder how different his life could've been if he stayed with the anurai. Its sad seeing him cry over the thought of having a home and a family again but having to turn it down to follow his path. I'm really excited to see what is next for solek.

Incredible how just a couple of days after posting this I got the the tailies story in s2 proving just how important that last part is: take away the resources, let the danger be other humans instead of polar bears and smoke monsters, and BAM you get a very, very strong us vs them mentality (but still very much community based - they split ONE chicken between 20 people!) and a much more defensive stance about the world.

Having finished my first rewatch of Lost s1 after about twenty years since i first watched it, I have to say the thing that struck me the most was how it positioned itself on human nature (as all media about people stranded in the wilderness tend to do, in one way or another).

According to (and I want to stress this, because I don't remember the rest well enough to comment on it) season 1 of Lost, humans are fundamentally good, and caring, and empathetic, and capable of change. When you remove them from their previous social context, they mostly get better: it was particularly evident watching the finale, with its multiple flashbacks to moments right before the departure. Almost all of the main character are significantly less appealing (and more self centered) than they are in the island timeline, even those who are now more understandable because we watched their backstories unfold during the course of the season. The ones that explicitly embrace the "blank slate - new me" perspective in the narrative are constructing a more open, more loving new identity (I think Shannon might be the most blatant, from the moment she decides to take the opportunity that this new microsociety on the island offers her she really shifts the way she interacts with the other people and the situation).

And well, there's probably something to be said on the fact that they are stranded in an abudant, non resource-scarce wilderness, facing dangers where a more individualistic stance would not be helpful, but still. People get lost and build a community, and the resource hoarding individualist (it's Sawyer, clearly) is side-eyed and eventually starts to change himself. I liked seeing that.
