I'm Laura, and I've had #ChronicNeuroLyme since 1996. I'm taking the @lymediseasechallenge and I encourage you to do the same! Its easy - just post a pic or video of you taking a bite out of a lime, then use the hashtags #takeabiteoutoflyme and #lymediseasechallenge and post it on social media, then tag a few people to do the same. I'm going to share a few facts about #LymeDisease that you likely didn't know. Here goes... . FACTS: 1. In a recent study, Dr. Alan MacDonald used brains from #Harvard labs and found that 5/5 autopsies revealed the #borrelia bacteria (aka the #Lyme bacteria) inside. That's 100%. 100%!!! . 2. In the US, federal funding for Lyme research (not funds for patients, mind you) is $25,000,000 a year. Sounds like a lot, right? Wrong. That equals $78/patient. #Breastcancer funding is $2,774/patient, #HIV / #AIDS funding is $68,181/patient, and funding for the #ZikaVirus is $220,000/patient, even though new cases of Lyme Disease each year far surpass all 3, which brings me to my next fact. . 3. In the US, new cases of Breast Cancer each year: 252,000, HIV/AIDS: 44,000, and the Zika Virus: 5,000, for a grand total of 301,000. New cases of Lyme Disease each year in the US alone: 320,000. That's 19,000 more cases than all 3 combined, yet funding is astonishingly lower. Not to mention that these are only documented cases. . 4. The @cdcgov has guidelines on treating Lyme, but they are horrifyingly ineffective. Less than 40% of those with Lyme ever saw a #bullseyerash or remember a tick bite, seeing as a tick carrying Lyme can be as small as this period --> [ . ], so many go misdiagnosed for years. For me, it took 18 years. The #cdc says Lyme is cured after 6-9 weeks of antibiotics, even if you always test positive and get sicker each day for the rest of your life. You are still "cured". Unfortunately, it's only curable if treatment begins within the first 6 weeks of INITIAL infection. . NOW is the time for me to challenge a few of you. It's simple and you'll help more than you know! I challenge: @railatron @gmessak @ariannafolsom @sanctionedjohnnygalecki and all those at @finemagazine - have fun with it!!! #lymeawareness #lymediseaseawareness (at San Diego, California)

Today I had mermaid hair. Two years ago my hair was falling out in gobs. It had been for years. I was exhausted all the time, my body ached, and if I wasn’t at work, I was laying on the couch wondering why I couldn’t do life as well as everyone around me. My digestion was a disaster, my brain wasn’t working, and my hair was dry, brittle and did I mention falling out in gobs? I mean GOBS. A decade of telling doctors that something felt off, and being ignored or misdiagnosed and wrongfully medicated led me to my naturopath. Lyme literate, she not only found the Lyme that I’d been fighting since my late teens/early twenties, but a ton of other garbage that had been plaguing my insides because the Lyme had made space for so many more infections and autoimmune diseases. Today I’m so fortunate to be on the mend. My energy is usually up to snuff, and a lot of my symptoms have cleared. I’m so thankful that I was financially able to seek out alternative medical advice. Someone who knew what lyme could look like in an atypical way. But so often people are not able to! May is Lyme disease awareness month and I will be sharing posts and info on why we ALL need to be on the look out and why our medical system needs to make some serious changes around how we diagnose and treat people with Lyme disease! Today I had mermaid hair, a seemingly small and superficial thing to share. But to me it’s a symbol of health and how hard I’ve worked for it! So let lyme awareness month begin! #takeabiteoutoflyme #lymediseaseawareness #lyme #lymewarrior #lymedontkillmyvibe http://bit.ly/2VDvmBf

SHOUTOUT to sadie-sayah for showing me the beauty of the LYME DISEASE CHALLENGE! (Thanks, gawgeous <3)
I challenge geekearth, lilscleaf, and brokencinema to take this challenge! The Challenge The purpose of the Lyme Disease Challenge is to raise awareness and funding for improved Lyme Disease diagnosis and treatment.
Are you in? Great! Then follow the three easy steps below and donate $10 to ILADS. Prefer not to take the bite? That’s okay too! Donate $100 to ILADS instead. All donations accepted here.
1. TAKE A BITE: Bite a lime and TAKE A PHOTO OR A  SHORT VIDEO of the act – the more sourpuss your face, the better (and funnier!).
2. SHARE A FACT: State ONE BRIEF FACT ABOUT LYME DISEASE, such as the facts provided below. You can say them in your video, write them on your photo, or include them in your post. Help us spread the true facts about Lyme Disease!
3. PASS IT ON: Keep the campaign going — CHALLENGE THREE OTHER PEOPLE – your friends, family, whomever! – to take a bite! Mention them in your video or if you do a photo tag them in your post.

“In the fullness of time, the mainstream handling of chronic Lyme disease will be viewed as one of the most shameful episodes in the history of medicine because elements of academic medicine, elements of government, and virtually the entire insurance industry have colluded to deny a disease. This has resulted in needless suffering of many individuals who deteriorate and sometimes die for lack of timely application of treatment or denial of treatment beyond some arbitrary duration.” -Dr. Kenneth B. Liegner, a US Lyme-Literate MD #takeabiteoutoflyme #lymewarrior #lymediseasechallenge #lymediseaseawareness https://ift.tt/2FKR8ar
