since we're being insane abt this again, hi here we go:

Thank you for validating all my feelings about this show regarding Eugene. Are there any Eugene moments you would have liked to have happened, but didn't?

For me, personally, I feel like we really missed out on his reactions to Rapunzel going full bird brain and the reverse incantation. I also felt like someone who cares about Rapunzel's well-being should have tried to get her to wear shoes when she's climbing snowy mountains, but maybe that's just my own poor tolerance for cold talking.

I'm forever grateful for all the soft smiles we got though.

Duuuuuuude, the him not reacting to her going full bird is me NEMESIS. I even drew a little thing about it. That scene is a prime example of how Eugene was pushed aside by the writing in favor of Cassandra.

I feel like we didn't get enough of Rapunzel comforting him when he's upset (though we did get a bit of it).

And I'd always wanted a scene of him shaving. IDK why, it's not like I find shaving particularly hot, I just... I've always wanted to see it. We did get scenes of him grooming, but not that, specifically.

Something that was unreasonably funny to me that always made me chuckle is that raps and Eugene don’t share a bed- it just made me wheeze I dunno! I’m still laughing thinking of it lol! I get it’s a kids show but it’s just SO silly to me XD even when they were traveling in the carriage- Eugene got kicked out with the boys hahah

LET THEM SHARE THAT BED DAMNIT-

Ok but silliness aside it does actually have merit. Rapunzel and Eugene are not married for the entirety of the series, and the kingdom of Corona, alongside its more anachronistic cultural inspirations, does lean itself on a number of older social values of central Europe. This means that an unmarried couple sharing a room, let alone a bed, is likely very unheard of even outside of royal courts.

And that aside, there's the status difference between Rapunzel(princess) and Eugene(common folk) that of course is already being given LOTS of grace and blind eyes, but still can't be completely ignored by Frederick. It's no secret they're in a relationship, and since Rapunzel is happy it's being welcomed greatly, but it's absolutely no stretch to believe that Frederick, at least in the first two seasons, would be apprehensive about letting someone of Eugene's status basically move in next door.

WAIT WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE WANTED POSTER ARTIST IS NOT ONLY A CANON CHARACTER, BUT ALSO AN OLD MAN?!?!!?!??!!??!!??!??!!!??!!??! WHICH EPISODE DID HE APPEAR ON??? (somewhere in S3 based on Eugene's outfit???)

Context: We're writing an original season 1 episode where we want to include the guy who makes the wanted posters, and due to obviously having forgotten that this guy exists we made up a guy for it. AN OLD SCRAWNY MAN.

I can't fucking believe this. I've watched this whole series like 4 times now. WE DON'T HAVE TO MAKE AN OC CORA

i think we should forgive the artist in tangled who had to draw flynn rider’s wanted poster. the nose is VERY hard to get right!!!! like whenever i draw a portrait i can get everything else pretty close to the reference, but i always fuck the nose up

Tangled the (Rewritten) Series - Script, Part Three

Open on Rapunzel and Cass in Rapunzel’s room. She’s pacing back and forth, frustrated and angry, while Cass looks guilty.

CASS: Look, Rapunzel, I didn’t mean to -

Rapunzel turns to face her. She’s pissed.

RAPUNZEL: Didn’t mean to what? Lie to my face? You had so many moments where you could have told me! Is that why you didn’t want to be friends? 

CASS: I didn’t know, okay! I was just cleaning - doing my job - and he burst into the room, and last I’d heard he was supposed to be captured at any cost! It’s not like I did this to spite you, I had no idea you were even alive right then! [sighs] He stole the crown, Rapunzel. That’s not just theft, that’s treason. That crown was all your parents had of you for eighteen years.

For a moment Rapunzel looks conflicted.

RAPUNZEL: Well - isn’t having the actual me an improvement? Doesn’t that matter?

CASS: I’m sure it does. But it doesn’t erase what he did. And - besides, I’m not supposed to be your friend. I’m a handmaiden. There’s a difference.

There’s a knock on the door, and Frederick enters. He looks incredibly awkward.

FREDERICK: I, ah…heard you were found down in the dungeons. Rapunzel, you really shouldn’t be down there. It’s not safe. 

Rapunzel is quiet. She looks upset, but doesn’t say anything, arms folded and shoulders hunched. 

CASS: [hesitant] Your Majesty, if I may?

Frederick and Rapunzel both look surprised.

FREDERICK: …Yes, Cassandra?

CASS: I, um….Has Eugene had a trial yet?

Tangled the (Rewritten) Series - Script, Part Two

Open on a shot of a dining room where Frederick, Ariana, Rapunzel, and Cass are having dinner. Rapunzel is eating with enthusiasm.

FREDERICK: So, how do you feel about the new room?

RAPUNZEL: It’s wonderful! I mean, it’s so big - bigger than the whole tower was - and so tall too! I mean, everything here is so…it’s incredible.

ARIANA: We’ll have to find some more furniture for you soon. You’ll need a wardrobe, a better bed, maybe a desk…

RAPUNZEL: Oh, it’s okay, I don’t need all that…

FREDERICK: Nonsense! Of course you do. Nothing but the best for our princess. 

He smiles at her. Rapunzel smiles back, nervous.

ARIANA: And if there’s anything else you’d like, just let us know. If you don’t like the dresser or you want to paint the walls a different colour -

RAPUNZEL: [a burst of excitement] Could I paint the walls?

ARIANA: Hm?

RAPUNZEL: [shrinking back again] I mean - back in the tower I used to do paintings on the walls. I guess I’d be nice to do that here, too…

FREDERICK: We’ll get you paints tomorrow, then. I’d love to see your art, Rapunzel.

He smiles at her, overwhelmed with affection, and some of Rapunzel's nerves fade enough for her to give a genuine smile back.

The moment breaks as the doors open and a guard (captain?) steps in.

GUARD: Your majesty, I have excellent news.

FREDERICK: Oh, even more good news? [smiles at the others sitting at the table] Fantastic. Go on.

GUARD: The criminal Flynn Rider has finally been apprehended.

Incredible things happening for the Monty Atilla episode

Hiii I'm so excited about what you're doing with this blog and this rewrite!! I was wondering what your thoughts on the cass and eugene dynamic is and how you're going to potentially change it, because I always thought it was an underused dynamic

So glad to be met with more interest and excitement! And ooooh boy do we have thoughts on Eugene and Cassandra. The way we want to tackle it aside form the uknighted dream angle is majorly to expand and develop on their relationship to:

1) get the attention they deserve as a duo independent from Rapunzel and 2) tap into, as you rightly stated, all of their untapped potential as 2 characters that share quite a number of attributes! Traits one does not immediately notice bc they never get the spotlight in favour of putting rapunzel in it.

First up, here's Cora's (semi coherent, high, and late night) thoughts on it:

Going off of this, since we start the rewrite right at the actual beginning, we get the opportunity to take our sweet time actually developping Cas' and Eugene's dynamic in a way that evolves just like their relationships with Rapunzel. As cora put it nicely, "the moon and earth are their own world too" <3

That way, we can also actually make their mutual hatred in the beginning rooted in the plot in a way that doesn't feel stuck or just played for gags - Cas is directkly responsible for Eugene's arrest and the fiasco that follows, so that ruins Eugene's first impression of her immensely, strengthend by his negative expereinces with the law.

And with everything playing right after the movie it makes so much more sense for Cas to be wary of him, have prejudice against him and letting her guard and lady in waiting positions influence those apprehensions, all because they have not had 6 months to get to know each other! Which they WILL, because they regularly HAVE to interact due to their close relationships with Rapunzel!

In that sense, we're not actually changing their dynamic in S1 as much as making it make more sense and then going BEYOND it. With time and shared expereinces comes trust, with trust comes friendship.

And they will both be caught off guard by that development, because they're both not the type to actually talk about things (Cas even more so than Eugene).

Ups and downs await them, developments and setbacks, and of course all in connection to Rapunzel of course.

INTRODUCTION POST!

Welcome to the tangled the series rewrite room, where we try our best to take all the nonsense, plotholes and frustration this series has given us and turn it into a more coherent and rounded overarching story!

There shall be angstier angst, epic revelations and some severely overdue consistent characterization! Coherent lore and plot will be our main focus, but of course we'll use this opportunity to fix the many representative issues of the show as well as add some good old self indulgence - so small disclaimer here, it's definitely not gonna be us trying to make the show perfect, it's gonna be our own interpretation of how we'd have liked it to be!

Yes! Satchel for season two! Love that idea!

Ooh, maybe Eugene can get it back after the trial or something. The last we see it in the movie is when he tries to give the crown to the Stabbingtons, and then he already has it back in Lance's debut.

That's a logical point in time to get it back!

His satchel, alongside the other items that he carries with him like (canonically) his lucky comb and (noncanon) maybe a knife and whatever else is in the satchel, were probably confiscated upon his arrest.

HOWEVER, there's a significant inconsistency that we'll need to fix to make that possible:

Eugene does not seem to have his satchel anymore after the Stabbingtons took care of him. They specifically sent the crown only along with him, probably leaving the satchel behind at the lakeside.

So, how does Eugene end up having it again in S1ep06: the return of strongbow? To make your idea work, there's a couple solutions:

It's not the same satchel. From the way Eugene handled it in the movie, it must've not been his most precious item, given that he tossed it around and even handed it over to the Stabbingtons. So it could've just been a common satchel he owned, then lost, and then replaced. Thus, upon his SECOND arrest in the Pilot, it gets confiscated and later returned :) Aaaaaaaaaaaand that's not gonna happen, bc as soon as I wrote this I got curious how the series' satchel looks and it's undoubtedly the same satchel. orz

2. But that gets us to the other solution: the satchel IS precious enough to him that after New Dream leaves the tower to head for corona again, they stop by the lake to search for it, successfully of course. :) Same concept in the Pilot from there on.

3. And now there's also a third option to make the inconsistency consistent again, but that one would make your idea impossible: Eugene does in fact not recover it, but LANCE does, by chance. He finds the thing and brings it to his old buddy that he totally doesn't wanna yank along into a dangerous gig! yay!
