Hello! I was wondering if you had reference points, tips, or advice on learning Japanese the right way? I know some words and phrases from watching anime over the years but I know how the language is a bit complicated and with three different ways to write it, I was curious if you had a starting point for someone who wanted to start off slow and not jump in over their head? Thanks!

Heyo. So, I’m going to try to keep this brief because I know I can very easily go off on tangents.

Advice #1 is - although listening to anime dialogue is not bad for listening practice, I would severely recommend NOT using it as source material. Many times, the ‘phrase’ you may pick up from anime is going to be slang, impolite, or just odd. It’s anime dialogue for a reason - it’s not realistic, it’s a cartoon.

Now, where CAN you learn Japanese?

 Well to be honest - start with online resources! How about Duolingo?

I have never used it personally, but I just went on there to see what they have available, and it’s actually rather decent! Good for drilling at the very least, and as a starter, it’ll get you the practice you need.

If you want to go deeper, I recommend getting something more solid - like a textbook! If you’re super into learning it, you might get quite far using a textbook and YouTube videos!

For textbooks, I recommend Genki. It’s the most digestible one for beginners. 

I don’t have YouTube channels I know of, but if you know any, please comment!

Now... is Japanese really that difficult?

Ehhhh Yes and No? Depends on what angle you look at it from.

You’re right about one thing - Japanese does have 3 separate alphabets. The first of those three is Hiragana. It looks like this:

And good news - it’s phonetic! 

What the heck is ‘phonetic’?

It means one symbol (letter) has one sound. So all you gotta do is memorize which sound goes with which symbol. 

This isn’t difficult. You did this for the latin alphabet. 

Katakana is ALSO phonetic, and it is much like hiragana. There goes another goalpost. No problem.

‘What about the third one???‘ you ask. 

Yeah, okay, fine. That one is kind of a bother. That’s kanji. The difficult thing about kanji is

They’re difficult to write because there’s typically way more complexity to them

There’s like 2000 of them you have to memorize.

They all have multiple pronunciations.

Look at this smug motherfucker. He’s not even the worst one. Kids learn about him in like, first grade.

But honestly, you don’t HAVE to learn all 2000 kanji to say ‘I speak japanese!’. People can fight me about this, I don’t care. I don’t think you need to! I can recognize roughly the first 1000 with relative ease, but still struggle with the more high-level ones. And guess what? I can still say I speak Japanese. Because... I do. 

You technically don’t need to learn kanji right away. Forget about them! Wait until you have a better grasp of the language. Use hiragana and katakana first. Then, once you have the basics, you can explore kanji. And there’s apps for that.

And honestly, although at first I was really amused by the mapping of english word order onto other languages, after a while people’s terror gets boring. 

Japanese isn’t difficult because of its word order! 

Yes, most languages have different word order. And yes, when you take many lines and cross them many times, you get scary-looking complexity. Or rather, the illusion of complexity. 

But realistically, Japanese word order is more flexible than English word order. And - again people can fight me on this but - Japanese grammar is actually way more straightforward and clean than English grammar! If you want to complain about grammar, complain about RUSSIAN! OR FINNISH!! You have my condolences on that front. But Japanese? No way. It’s clean-cut and elegant.

Side-note: Japanese learners - DON’T come at me with keigo, I don’t care. Keigo (respectful language form in Japanese) is, like everything, a matter of memorization. Yeah it’s complex and full of weird arbitrary rules, but plenty of Japanese people still struggle with it. Which means it’s ok for YOU to struggle with it too.  

And wow, okay, yep, I went off on a tangent...

TL;DR:

How can you learn Japanese?

Use Duolingo. Memorize hiragana and katakana alphabets. Supplement with texbooks and YouTube. Go to school for it. Go abroad. Find a buddy to practice with. There are apps to meet Japanese people who want to learn English, and you can do language exchange over text or voice. 

Is Japanese difficult? 

No. Kanji is difficult. Japanese pronunciation and grammar is relatively straightforward for English speakers. Sure, there will be difficulties. It’s a whole ass other language! But it’s not impossible. Not with the right attitude. :)

I'm working on a story involving angels and demons and Heaven and Hell, etc. I was wondering if there was anything specific you could point out to use for these certain aspects. The third season was confirmed by Telltale Games on July 26, 2014 during Skybound Entertainment's panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2014.[1][2] The first installment will be released sometime in November 2016.

Anyway I think you’re a pretty cool person, we’ve talked a few times and I have (had?) your skype. I’m very awful about contacting people and starting conversations so I apologize if I never message or talk to you! I would like to get to know you better, as we’ve been following each other for a rather long time. At least a year or two? Probably around two. Man time sure flies.

TA: After that brief hesitation, Sollux finally shuffled closer to his brother and muttering about why he even had the right to tell him what to do if he couldn't even say his name right, honestly. He quickly thumbs open the button on Mituna's pants and pulls down the zipper before throwing his hands up in a 'there!' motion.

MITUNA: Mituna brightens up immensely when the fastenings to his pants were undone. His fine motor control might work enough to type moderately well on a keyboard, but on things like buttons and whatnot, it's just way too hard. "Eheheh, thankth, lil bro." He wiggles out of his pants and undergarments (it's just easier that way) and points at his dick. It's...a dick, yeah. There is nothing particularly spectacular about it.

TA: Sollux...well, he looks, of course he does. But his hand shoots up like a shield to block it after taking a very short survey. Or not very short? It's hard to tell. He huffs out a sigh and tries to fight down the warmth gaining on his face. "Yeah, it'th thpectacular. Good job. You've now had one unfortunate perthon look at your cock, and that'th probably all you're going to get. I hope you are enjoying thith moment ath much ath I am."

MITUNA: Mituna just keeps grinning, and reaches out and grabs Sollux and tugs him into him. As in, onto his lap in his computer chair, his back pressed against Mituna's chest. "Come on, you little shithead, it doethn't count unlethh I get to thee yourth too!" He slides up Sollux's shirt with one hand and begins struggling with Sollux's pants buttons with the other, to no avail. He growls and uses both hands, and manages to get the button undone, and then he just shoves his hand in. It's easier this way, after all. "Where ith it, where ith it..."

TA: His first reaction ought to have been digging his elbow into Mituna's torso and hopefully hit some vital organs along the way, but instead he simply allows himself to be pulled onto his lap. He does snort out a laugh when Mituna starts struggling with his pants, somewhat confident that he's not going to get it figured out until oh fucking hell. Sollux spasms and nearly shrieks when Mituna's hands go down his pants. "What the fuck are you doing? Get out of there!" he says and his voice definitely cracked there. Holy shit, he is getting molested by his dumbass older brother and he...kind of likes it?

MITUNA: Mituna plops his head on Sollux's shoulder, pouting. "Pleeeeathe, Thollukth? It ithn't weird, ith it? I'm thorry..." The stark brokenheartedness is plainly evident in Mituna's voice, and he's still sort of just...toying with Sollux's dick with the tips of his fingers, more absentmindedly than with any particular goal in mind. "You aren't angry, are you?" Sollux probably is angry, in Mituna's mind, and he wraps his free arm around Sollux's chest and hugs him. Hugs are definitely normal things, Sollux shouldn't get upset about that. Right? Right.

TA: Ugh, not that voice. There's some amount of him that does have a soft spot for his brother. The whining and the twinges of sadness do get to him, and it's not like this feels bad. Sollux gives a little groan, caught between prying Mituna's hands off of him and going along with it. Mostly for Mituna. Maybe a little bit for himself. Mituna's fingers already have him a little bit turned on and he's holding himself back from arching up against his hand. "No, no, it'th not weird, it'th...I'm not mad. It'th fine." Well, it's a little weird. He wasn't expecting to get groped when he wandered in here, but...it's not like it's been off the list of considerations. He shifts slightly, feeling somewhat comforted by Mituna's arm. "Uh. Keep going?"

MITUNA: Mituna beams at him again and plops a wet kiss on Sollux's cheek, nuzzling his neck affectionately. He stroked along the soft flesh a bit more, marveling more at the feeling of it than anything else. "Lethhee, I'm gonna take your pantth off now, kay?" He extracts his hand from Sollux's pants and fumbles with the zipper, and eventually gets that down. Another success to him. However, he can't just get the pants off of Sollux, which he growls and whines and grumbles about, but eventually he gave up and stated, very flatly, "Take them off for me. Do it right now, fuckbreath, or I'm gonna shove you off and rip everything you're wearing off of you." He's...kind of resentful about not being able to remove his brother's clothing easily, much less his own. Dammit.

TA: Sollux watches as his brother struggles along. It's...sort of embarrassing, but he's content to let Mituna try it himself even if it doesn't usually work out. Sometimes it really tests his patience when Mituna can't do something as fast as he can, but he can only imagine how frustrating it would be to be on the opposite end of that. So he's not too surprised when he quits, but the harsh words are a little startling. Not because they're harsh, but the situation at hand is making it a little...weird. But Sollux doesn't argue it. "Chill the fuck out, dude," he mutters back, standing up just long enough to shimmy out of his pants and underwear. He's tempted to cross his legs to hide the half-hard on that Mituna gave him. "There. Happy now?"

MITUNA: "I'm alwayth happy with you, fuckhead. Even when you're a shitty bathtard of epic proportionth." He kissed Sollux's cheek again, and just like in those videos he'd stumbled upon online one day, his fingers, long and delicate like Sollux's, but after the accident, their movements are less fine and more jerky and rough. He was just gently, very gently tracing over the helf-hard flesh, sometimes stroking up it properly, but it's more like a little kid being fascinated with the look and the texture as he slid his fingers this way and that, paying special attention to the head--"It'th tho thmooth," he murmurs into Sollux's ear, marveling in it all. He honestly has no idea what the fuck he's doing, but this is probably a good start to it all. Right? Right.

TA: Sollux drops his head back against Mituna's shoulder, giving a little groan. Something about Mituna talking low to him like that made him shiver, and being paired with such light and gentle movements wasn't helping at all. He lets his eyes droop closed, and in order to make up for the embarrassing display of pleasure, decides to add an insult in. "Jutht thtop talking. Your voice ith turning me off." Despite that, he does push up against Mituna's hand and god if he could just go a little bit faster...he can't really ask for that, can he? What if he couldn't? This was just playful messing around, right, this is a totally normal activity to do between brothers but why is he so thankful that their dad isn't home? "Thith ith okay, right?" he asks, voice quiet and out of breath. "You're okay with thith? Do you want me to...do you want me to do anything?"

MITUNA: Mituna pouts but does shut up like Sollux told him to--instead focusing on the attention he's giving his brother. Sollux sure does seem to like it, which just inspires him to hunch forward a little bit and work at it harder. He can recognize pleasure, obviously, and yes, he needs to heighten it. It needs to be perfect. For Sollux. "Y-you can, um...do anything you want. I love you, Thollukth." Mituna's quiet about it, of course, since apparently Sollux doesn't like his voice, but he still needed to voice that. Sollux probably knows a lot more about this than him anyways, since when he leaves the house he isn't laughed at and ridiculed and all of that. He's at least being docile through this, and one of those mood swings where he becomes violent and angry and raging had best not come when he's doing this. But he's making his brother happy, so what does it matter right now? It's so hard to make Sollux happy or feel good, and Mituna is downright proud of himself right now for getting at least one of those completed.
