okay this movie just started pissing me off a little bit. there's this scene about how they hijack hundreds of cars and start driving them remotely. and it's meant to look like haha ridiculous movie tech you can't do that. but it's entirely realistic and the public still refuses to believe it, or at least, they are powerless to do anything about it. the free market got us here btw, this is what innovation via competition looks like. thinking about how people have brushed this off every time i've mentioned it in the past just makes me mad.

and do not make the mistake of thinking that just because they patched the bug means everything is hunky dory. how did that happen in the first place? there are other bugs. there will be other bugs. nothing short of rearchitecture will prevent this class of attacks.

I know you have all probably seen the esims for gaza posts circulating. Some of you have probably looked at them and thought maybe you should help out, but have weighed up the daunting process of signing up for something you're unfamiliar with vs. the gut-wrenching scale of the things people are going through on the ground right now, and you've put it off or questioned whether it will make enough of a difference vs. some other future kind of activism you could put that $6+ towards. I'm not calling you out or scolding you, it is natural to feel conflicted and ambivalent about the multiple calls for aid that you are seeing on social media.
but consider this: what would you do if you suddenly had to leave your home? how would you cope? how would you begin to plan where to go next, or figure out what to do to take care of yourself? most likely you would reach reflexively for your phone.
telecoms access is not a petty luxury in 2024. a loaded esim means the ability to call family members and find out where they are and whether they're safe, and whether they need anything you can provide for them. it means access to maps and regular updates on the situation unfolding around you. it means you can look up whether it's safe to drink rain water, or how to tie a type of knot you've never had to think about before, or how to treat an injury without medical supplies. it means the ability to tell people outside the situation what you are seeing, what you are feeling, what you are thinking. it is an absolutely crucial resource. and it starts at $6 for 7 days.
many many people have observed that internet access is changing the way the world understands genocide. internet access is life or death, and it is shaping modern history in front of you. and it starts at $6 for 7 days.
please, please visit gazaesims.com and spend 5 minutes and $6 to change the way this plays out for everyone.

i have to say, so far this IDF looks pretty realistic, with some notes:
looks like a cisco house, no surprises there. especially given that it's a skyrise, mostly breaking out small pipes to homes and offices, you don't need the kind of equipment the other Big Two supply. at least some of this gear looks legit based on the teal and yellow color scheme you can see in the south center of the image, though i can't ID models (i haven't worked with much low speed gear)
the cabling has been fancied up a bit for the movie, there's a significant drawback to running cables up and down like that in front of the devices: you can't add or remove equipment installed between the endpoints without taking down the links. better practice is to run cables out to the side, down, and back in, or to to up/down into a horizontal cable manager and then over to the side
the vertical cable management studs are a nice touch. i haven't seen those before, but they seem legit enough, and honestly much nicer than the panduit vertical shit i deal with
not pictured, the conduits and trays on the walls and overhead look legit, and the ceiling is characteristically high
Tumblr media
now a moment later, letty cuts the orange wire of aforementioned cat5e, and suddenly we have control of the security system. okay, maybe if you had redundant links and you were able to compromise the backup but needed the system to kick over that could work, but i don't think that's what happened here. but anyways!

This isn't the only thing that crippled the media, though. Yes, the fairness doctrine was not great to lose but Bill Clinton passed the Telecom Act of 1996 that evicerated independent competitive media. The small monopolies that have absolutely collapsed media integrity are because of that act. Clinton actually fucked us more than Reagan in this instance.
