"Counterpoint" (S05E10, Stardate UNKNOWN) presents an intriguing premise with Voyager intruding on another alien race's space and being forced to submit to their authority. It does gloss over the finer points of the Prime Directive violation, but the mystery of whether or not Kashyk is sincere is solid.

For this episode poster I wanted to emulate a propaganda poster that would capture the side of the anti-telepath Devore.

oh god I'm back

I know, I know. I said I’d just step out for a second. Maybe touch some grass. Maybe not scroll for hours through a website that is basically a dopamine slot machine designed specifically for me. But here I am. Again.

So, hi. I’ve been avoiding Tumblr like it’s a cursed artifact because every time I log in, I lose entire days to posts about sad wizards, incredibly niche fandom memes, and, let’s be honest, pictures of adorable cute animals. But I return to you now, at the turning of the tide, because someone at a recent book signing mentioned that I really needed to talk to y'all in some other way than an 'automatic repost from my own site.'

Fair. It was never you. It was always me.

Now, that said, I'm still talking about FULL NEGATIVE, the scifi book that I'm crowding over on Backerkit, because, well, it's still live, and will be until April 11. I am actively trying to convince you all to throw money at it in exchange for an absolutely unhinged space opera full of telepaths, betrayals, sexy spies, and—because I’m me—an aggressively overcomplicated plot full of feelings. On Babylon 5, telepathic abilities weren't limited by touch, but physical contact was more intimate, and could cause a deeper connection.

They describe sex between two telepaths as a very intimate experience, the physical contact and mental abilities tearing down boundaries and creating something like feedback off each other in a way that wasn't painful, but could be disconcerting, because it was like looking into a mirror and having yourself reflected back infinitely, because you were seeing yourself through their eyes.

Two telepaths try to read each other's minds and it gives feedback like when two microphones get too close to each other

no but like telepaths would be terribly left in the dark even with all their mind-reading powers:

1) they wouldn't just know everyone's deepest darkest secrets because in a normal, routine (and unrelated) situation - there's not really a reason to be thinking about said deepest darkest secret???

b) the sheer number of inside jokes and shorthands for long, complicated things that i have with myself is insane. and there is no way anyone who hears a random collection of words that make absolutely no sense together would have any idea what's going on

AND- there's surely no way miscommunication is gonna occur when someone can read your mind, right? (ahahaha - it'll open up a whole new level of misunderstandings)

Telepaths who have experienced every intrusive thought under the sun

Telepaths who have found themselves thinking similarly to someone else after using their power for too long

Telepaths who experience synesthesia

Telepaths who are colourblind and from looking into someone's thoughts can experience colours in that way

Blind telepaths who have someone else to be their eyes

Deaf telepaths who have someone be their ears

Telepaths who have had their innocence shattered way to young from the thoughts they hear

Telepaths who mix their own thoughts with another person

Telepaths who have great ideas but aren't very skilled and telepaths who are greatly skilled but not very creative, mixing thoughts to create something new

Telepaths who cheat when playing games

Telepaths who don't like to abuse their powers

Telepaths who try and lead a normal life (bonus points if they fail awfully)

Telepaths who at one point thought that they were crazy

Telepaths who do unconventional things with their powers

Telepaths who inconvenience people with their powers in funny ways

Forgetful telepaths

Telepaths who never forget a thought they've received

Telepaths who can transfer thoughts visually, olfactory or even transfer the thought of a taste

Telepaths who spent time looking through other people's memories, feeling their nostalgia

Telepaths doing the above because they've never had many fond memories of their own

Telepaths trying to gain knowledge though other people's thoughts

Telepaths looking for advice in other people's thoughts

Telepaths who use that power to run a business

Telepaths who help people who know what a thing looks like but not what it's called

Telepaths who make it their life's work to help people who have a thought but can't articulate it, find the right word

Telepaths, but they can only send it reas thoughts in the same way their own brains think. If you think in pictures but not words, you can only send or read pictures. If you can imagine sounds but not pictures, you can only send or read sounds. If you can picture words but not imagine voices, you can only send or read visualized words. Etc, etc.

But this also brings up a sort of mental language barrier. If someone doesn't think in exactly the same way, then the transmitted thoughts could be out of tune or just completely lost, like slight television static, or being on an entirely different radio channel. Sort of like writing or speaking two entirely different languages where you know they mean something but you have no idea what that meaning is.

And if two telepaths are sending and reading to each other's thoughts, then the struggle to translation each other's thoughts can be massive if they don't have any overlapping ways of thinking.

However! This could be a great way of finding out if someone with blindness or hard of hearing can adjust well to restoration surgeries. If their brains are capable of receiving sound or visual signals, whether they can currently understand it or not, could be telltale signs of possible success for the procedures they opt into.

But besides that, imagine the shenanigans this type of dynamic can make for a story. Trying but failing to cheat at a high stakes casino game. An annoyed telepath telling their blind companion to "watch your own back, because I don't want to," and then sending them their mental spacial awareness that updates by the second on the positions of everything and everyone in the area so they can take care of themselves. A colorblind telepathic dog that doesn't know it's telepathic or colorblind in human standards.
