Except for some reason it works now. So I put the front panel cover back on, gave it a bit of a rest to make sure it wasn't a temperature issue, and tested again and it's still fine.
Next problem: test the serial functionality with two programs:
One that spits out ASCII barf [check] One that echos whatever was typed into the terminal [check]
Well, both pass, so now it's time for the bootstrap loader, followed by the binary loader. Those seem to work. Let's try 095-000036-01 Nova 1200 Logic Test from 1970 to 1974. They built it for exactly this purpose.
Passes the first check aaaaand... fails the second. Okay, let's work with that. Later, serial tests stopped working too. Great...

See that blue line spiking? That's the input that triggers things, and it's subtle analog bullshit, which is then turned into clean digital high/low. It's very unorthodox compared to how we do things today.
So this turned into a more complicated issue, or set of issues. The front panel started getting mad again (/CONRQ again). And after studying the circuitry for awhile, I deduced it was from the 5V rail being below the safe threshold for the logic to work. The 5V rail delivers at most 12A to this computer per the specs, which is for a few hundred logic IC's (lamps and core memory use different voltage rails). That means if it isn't adjusted right, the voltage sags pretty badly when you get far enough away from the PSU.

That's on the front panel. Not ideal. It's not much different on the CPU board. The problem is that if I boost the 5V adjustment trimpot on the PSU to reasonable levels, the -5V and +12V rails climb.
-5V isn't so much of an issue, not much needs that to work. 12V is used by only 2 things, neither of which is logic: the front panel lamps (which are rated for safe operation between 11-17V per Data General), and the industrial Noctua fans in the PSU chassis.
When 5V is happy, 12V is more like 13.5V, which is liable to degrade and eventually destroy those fans. So I built this little thing to protect those fans: a pair of diodes to drop the voltage down just below 12V. We don't need to worry about the lamps, they're fine

But that fixed the PSU issue, which fixed the /CONRQ issue.

OK, so thinking about a Sanlu au where Luffy is a Pirate King who gets so many marriage requests but does not want to get married. And so he instead insists that he gets to choose his partner through a contest where all the princes and princesses of like the countries around them or other pirates can like bring him a meal and if he likes it, you get married. The problem is that whenever people bring him food he'll just eat it and move on.
And so obviously the vinsmokes are like. Oh s***, we should get in on that. New Ally? And so they try with some of Sanji's others brothers, but none of them like work because they just made their cooks make their meals and everything.
Then eventually sanji, who wants to escape hears about this. And he knows that he can cook so he makes this amazing meat dish He is ready to present his meal towards the Prince in hopes of like maybe escaping his country and living there with Luffy. But like as he's on the way there, there's like this little girl who's starving, and so he gives her the meal instead. It was a one in a million shot anyway.
Anyway, either Luffy sees him doing this or if this was like the true test for kindness for all his partners, and sanji passes the test. Luffy's like get bring this man to me! So sanji goes before him, and luffy asks if he has a meal for him. All sanji has is like, this old sandwhich that he made for himself for the journey here, and sanji tells luffy that. Luffy tells him to bring it to him anyway, and after a lot of protests, he does. Luffy finally eats it and says that its delicious. He and sanji definitely get married.

Solenoids go clicky-clacky 🔩🔊🤖
We're testing out an I2C-to-solenoid driver today. It uses an MCP23017 expander. We like this particular chip for this usage because it has push-pull outputs, making it ideal for driving our N-channel FETs and flyback diodes. The A port connects to the 8 drivers, while the B port remains available for other GPIO purposes. For this demo, whenever we 'touch' a pin on port B to ground, the corresponding solenoid triggers provide an easy way to check speed and power usage.

Was thinking about II in the shower, specifically Alchemist. I really like Alchemist as a concept. A techie supervillain worker’s coop. You get access to everything as long as you add something, and everything includes the ability-enhancing drugs that Alchemist himself makes. You need a specific piece of tech to do your thing? Talk to Fab, she’ll set anything up you need if you have the schematics, if you don’t then you can spend a couple days prototyping with her and you two will figure out a way to make it work out. You need to test something out on living creatures? Plasm will get some cloned animals or homunculi or brains in jars spun up for you. Everyone’s working on different morality and legality scales. Alchemist practically owns the drug market, Fab sells unregistered firearms and exceedingly illegal car mods, Plasm will happily tell you about his subscription based clone bodyguard program with a sliding scale of intelligence. But other members might be your run of the mill mad scientist, a techie assassin, or someone trying to solve world energy. What matters to Alchemist is that everyone brings something to the table, everyone puts work in, and everyone comes away from it stronger and better equipped.
Fighting anyone who’s spent a couple days with Alchemist means you’re not only fighting that techie at near peak performance, but you’re also fighting the collective knowledge and technology of over a dozen techie supervillains working together. Yeah, they might be a plant based techie, but if you manage to land a hit, the armor they’re wearing might be piezoelectric crystal, and that thing on their shoulder might be a miniaturized laser diode array that all the energy from the last five hits they’ve taken just got dumped into, better dodge quickly jackass, it’s aimed by a predictive targeting ai that’s been recording how you move since the start of the fight! Oh they actually take damage? Alchemist brand rapid healing injectors. Oh you’re winning the fight? They teleport away. And through all of this they’re using their plant tech to attack you.

LED tape strips are surprisingly strong and resilient. i've had two reels in my materials box for a very long time that i originally saved from the bin, they were part of a shop display from a former workplace of mine. these poor diodes had been torn up from their adhesive backing and were really in a sorry state; completely twisted, bunched and stuck together. took five minutes to straighten and testing them and found they were basically still perfect! if you're familiar with these cheap rgb LED strips at all they are basically a dream to work with too, you can easily cut them to length and wire them up in a variety of configurations. i'm using these ones to make a large light table/box for tracing. if anyone is interested at all let me know i can post some pics, not bothered otherwise lol. even though it is kind of an interesting project because i;m also repurposing the fresnel+diffuser layers from a large television...

Orange Bass Terror 1000
This amp really gave me a hard time. This amp belongs to the bass player for my band. The original issue was that the signal would cut out in the middle of practice or shows and the head would just fizzle out and shut down.

My initial thoughts were that the class D power amp was failing due to overheating. On the bench, heat seemed fine, fan kicked on with no issues and parts weren’t getting too hot, but voltages were not normal in the power supply. These amps have a smps mounted on the top of the amp.

I spent some time replacing dodgy electrolytic caps in the switching part of the power supply. Didn’t help. I flipped the amp over, voltages seemed okay for the most part but at the first power amp mosfet, there was a short between all three legs. I replaced that mosfet and the amp started to blowing fuses every time I powered it up on the variac and the fan and indicator light weren’t turning on anymore. Tracing that back through the power supply, one of the switching mosfets had failed causing the bridge rectifier, and power switching IC to fail as well. I replaced the mosfets, the IC, and the bridge rectifier.
Now we had decent voltages to most of the amp except for the -53V rail which was way off.
I started testing diodes and found that D5 in the power amp was shorted.

Of course that diode is totally inaccessible without removing the huge inductor. Once the inductor was out, the diode wasn’t reading short anymore. I was able to trace this back and the only thing that made sense was another failing power amp mosfet.

I went through and replaced the rest of the power amp mosfets and we were rocking.

Hi - thank you for making so many helpful guides! I've got a 98 WT Leopard furb that just won't find home. No corrosion in battery compartment.
It looks like the small tongs match up like your guide, but I just can't get him to find the home position. Here's what he looks like at the moment:

Clean the sync screw contacts, if you haven't already! Isopropyl alcohol or some contact cleaner on a cotton swab should work, just give the touching surfaces a good scrub. I've occasionally had one so corroded that I had to take a buffing wheel to it, but in a situation like that it will be visibly very corroded.
If it's still not working and you have access to a multimeter with a continuity testing mode, use that to probe along the various solder joints between the contacts and the circuit board. Furbies don't always have the best soldering and it sometimes breaks during shipping. The wires (green and yellow on your Furby) are also pretty fragile, and may have breaks under the insulation. It's not a common problem, but if someone previously did work on your Furby it's a good thing to check.
(if you have a multimeter and don't know if it can test for continuity, check for a setting marked with a filled-in arrow pointing to the right with a line across the tip. Run a search for "diode symbol" if you need a visual!)

Donnie’s other hand goes to the back of his neck and he rubs it, hoping his laugh isn’t quite as manic as it sounds to him. “I’m sure you have dozens of these lying around. But I always say you can never have too many laser diodes!” He holds his breath as he awaits her reaction.
Andi picks up the diode slowly and looks at it. Then she looks up at him, and her smile is as bright as her eyes. “Thank you so much Donnie! This is so sweet!”
“Excellent!” Donnie is so busy trying not to give away how relieved he is that he doesn’t notice Andi getting closer. The kiss on his cheek, therefore, comes as a complete surprise. He stiffens, and his face goes white hot with the force of his blush.
She pulls away, and the amusement on her face brings him up short. “It is, um, the wrong voltage though…” She and his brothers start to laugh as he slaps a palm to his face. Well. At least he made her laugh, right?

Leftovers & layout - WLED board revision A completed!
Sunday night, Babyada went to bed early, so we finished the capture and layout of our WLED board. Thanks to all the suggestions, we were able to implement quite a few!
For power, use USB C PD with switch-select or DC up to 24V; they are diode-OR'd together with PMEG3050

- it's linear, but we don't need a lot of current at 5V. For 3.3V, we went with our trusty TPS54202

Upon request, we kept the ICS-43434 I2S microphone

and added an IR 38KHz receiver. For external connectivity, there's an ADC/DAC/GPIO #27 breakout on a JST SH 3-pin and I2C on a StemmaQT/Qwiic 4-pin.
We also added a 2x3 breakout header with 3V, GND, and 3 more GPIO so you could connect an external microphone, IR receiver, buttons, or rotary encoder. The terminal blocks have three 5V level-shifted outputs with 100 ohm in-line resistors and power/ground pairs for each. If you need just one more LED strand, the fourth 5V signal is on the 2x3 block.
Rounding out the design are four mounting holes, a reset button, GPIO #0 user button, GPIO LED, and an individual NeoPixel, which could be useful for testing. It's still pretty small, 2" x 1.3". With an ESP32-Mini module, we can pick a PCB or wFL antenna port, and it's an easy swap to make it use an ESP32-Pico, which has 2MB PSRAM.
