Dear Domestic Dragon Trust,

I’m an autistic adult considering getting my first service dragon. Before I make the commitment, though, I have a question about their care that I’d like to ask to ensure I’m equipped to provide them with a healthy and happy life.

I live with my parents, who are separated, and generally go back and forth between their houses every two weeks or so. Would this be a problem for a dragon, from either a territory/stability or a horde perspective? If so, are there steps that could be taken to mitigate this, or is it a dealbreaker?

I’ve been doing my research, of course, and I’ve read a bit about helping dragons cope with a move, but I haven’t seen this issue addressed specifically. Of course, I would never want to bring a dragon into a situation that would cause them serious or prolonged distress of any sort, and I’m happy to look into alternative possibilities for either my support needs or my schedule of time at each house if my current situation wouldn’t allow a dragon to thrive.

Thank for reaching out to us, we're happy to help. Exactly what service dragon best suits you, of course depends on what kind of support you would like them to provide. But considering your housing situation we recommend looking into adopting the smallest breed of domesticated dragon: the pocket dragon!

When bonded to a human they tend to spend as much time with them as possible and they love riding in pockets, hand bags, or hoods. Traveling between houses won't be a problem with a pocket dragon, because they will consider you their home.

When it comes to hoards pocket dragons tend to focus on small items and do not need a great many of them to thrive. They do tend to have a particular comfort-hoarding item that they should not be separated from, like a favourite button. But these are usually small enough to carry with you, just like the dragon.

Of course some people require larger dragons as their service animal. A pocket dragon won't be able to physically guide a human, for instance. But if you are looking for an emotional support animal with a talent for enforcing self care, you really cannot do better!

midnight: What keeps your OC up at night? Do they have nightmares? Fears? Anxieties? What do they do in the small hours of the morning when they should be sleeping?

All the darker moments of Nicodemus' adventures can haunt him now and then, though his anxiety and fear gets much better the more time passes after ending the cult. Seeing his parents killed, seeing every death of his friends along the way, dying himself and seeing the soul devouring void are the most recurring horrors that come back now and then. If he can't sleep he will usually stay up reading or working on his spells to focus his mind on something else. If it's particularly bad he might do a Sending to hear the voice of whomever is in his nightmares, to convince himself they're okay.

alone: How does your OC deal with loneliness? Have they ever been completely alone before? How do they act when there’s no one around to see them?

Not well, being a twin they're used to having their brother around since birth. Ending up in Barovia is the first time they've been separated for so long, if it wasn't for their new friends they would not be doing well mentally the longer it went on. They act pretty much the same when people aren't around, though if they were alone for a longer time they might start talking to the air since they're so used to have someone to talk to.

variel is a kind wayfarer paladin. she joined the order after escaping servitude on her adopted "family's" merchant ships (there was a storm and a shipwreck and variel ended up being washed up ashore in the living lands). she was saved by a kind wayfarer paladin, kirsi, who became her mother figure. after variel recovered, she began her training to join the order. after completing her initiation, she spent the next years of her life fulfilling her kind wayfarer duties, guiding and protecting travellers from the dangers of the living lands.

unfortunately a boring answer, but variel doesn't have a strong opinion of animancy one way or another. she sees its dangers (especially after seeing the abhorrent treatment of patients in brackenbury sanitarium), but doesn't discount its benefits and how it can help those in need.

11. what are your favorite points about their story and the narrative surrounding them?

I love many things about her story. I especially love the themes about idealization that her character touches on through her life before milgram and inside because of the audience. Her ideas around lies as well and her feelings of being "cold" and "seeking warmth"

12. what do you wish would be discussed more often about them in the fandom?

I wish more people focused on something else that's not the abortion regarding her murder. Like i wish more people at least considered the possibility that her murder is actual real fucking murder. Especially because there's many things that definetely point to this imo. I also wish more people focused more on how the audience's reactions and ideas of her character has affected her and how it possibly reminds her of a bad experience she's had with one of her clients (this is NOT the first time someone has pushed their ideas about her onto her and decided what she was without her asking. Like there's a reason why she's so angry with us)
