Inspired by the recent reddit post, but referencing the discussion in general.

The male MC discourse in RC is stupid, and I'm tired of pretending otherwise. I am a girl who usually likes to play as a girl in my games and I hope I can keep playing as a girl in the future--here, I can say it without gatekeeping an entire genre and starting a freaking gender war.

First and foremost, why are we acting like visual novels are a limited resource that we need to fight men for, less they 'overtake' it with male MCs? If the target audience for the game grows to include more men, that just means more paying customers -> more different books. Or, more likely, they can make separate games that are targeted at men from the beginning, which you won't have to ever interact with if you don't want to.

When this conversation comes up, people always try to give some big ideological reason why RC has to be for girls. Usually they'll bring up how games (by which they always mean high-profile PC action FPS or RPG games) used to only have male protagonists, until finally Choices and RC (mobile romantic visual novels) came around, and I just have to laugh at that. These are obviously such different genres targeted at entirely separate audiences that barely intersect. RC did not solve the problem of female representation in gaming. That would be like saying that lack of female superheroes in 2010s Marvel is solved because female led romcoms exist. Come on now.

And the funniest thing is that the 'threat' of men overtaking RC is non-existent, really. RC will continue to make mostly female led stories, for the same reasons mainstream games in 2000s and 2010s continued to make male led ones--structural sexism and gender stereotypes. Games were 'for boys', so girls didn't play them and companies didn't market them to girls, reinforcing the cycle further. Now it's 'romance games are for girls', so that's who RC caters--and will continue to cater to--until men stop thinking that 'girly things are gay and cringe'. All you are doing by yelling at men to get out of 'women's spaces' is upholding this status quo. (Also I cannot with people calling a fandom or a hobby 'women's space', but that's a whole other story.)

The reality of how many people (not just men btw) are actually genuinely interested in reading a RC book with an MMC is clearly reflected in the fact that out of 47 books in RC, a total of 1 (one) has a male MC. And it didn't cause men to take over RC or the fandom to fall apart or whatever.

I've been in this fandom for a while, and I've only seen a handful of guys coming out to say that while they like the app already (otherwise they wouldn't be here, duh), they'd enjoy playing as dude once in a while. And no matter how nice they are about this, someone will always go 'Boo, this game isn't for you, go play Call of Duty!' and I just. What are we doing here. 

This is not the guy who mocked you for saying you'd like to play as a girl in the Witcher. Nor is it the guy who had a meltdown over there being 'too many women in video games'. Those types are not playing RC, never have and never will. They would not touch RC with a ten foot pole, because they are too afraid their dicks would fall off immediately from overexposure to the color pink.

When a person here comes out and says, 'I wish there were more contemporary books in RC because I like contemporary books', fantasy lovers in the comments respond with, 'Idk, I am kind of here for fantasy, I don't read contemporary books usually,' and that's the entire conversation. But replace 'contemporary books' with 'male MC books', and suddenly it's a Discourse (tm), and I'm so tired of it.

I can recommend some queer movies with HFN / HEAs! Most of these are M/M and/or are intercultural or interracial romances. Edited to add: Here's this comment as a Letterboxd list (notes included) for easier watchlist adding.

Breaking Fast (2020, dir. Mike Mosallam) - A little bit wooden at first, but warms as you go - this is an M/M romance between a Muslim and a white guy in modern day LA, and it's all about them breaking fast together during Ramadan. Lots of food, lots of intimacy in dining settings.

Kajillionaire (2020, dir. Miranda July) - This is a kooky F/F comedy with some explorations and musings on the lasting impact of child neglect, isolation, and exploitation, but is nonetheless quite gleeful in its depiction of neurodivergent and unusual ways of being and of loving. I adore this one, it's a real favourite of mine.

I Love You Phillip Morris (2009, dir. Glenn Ficarra & John Recqua) - Be gay, do crime! This one is very silly but it's still fun, featuring a man who'll do anything imaginable to keep his beach-blond and beach-tanned lover, Ewan McGregor, happy and content. Contemporary M/M nonsense throughout.

In & Out (1997, dir. Frank Oz) - This one is a very silly contemporary M/M romance, and it's about Kevin Kline, an English teacher, basically finding out that he's gay because everyone in the world knows already... except him? I want to warn in advance for some really difficult fatphobic / diet culture stuff about his fiancée, played by Joan Cusack, I've not included CWs for most of these films but that one in this film is extreme. If you can get past that, though, it's one of those films that's very Of Its Time, but in part feels more joyful because of the way it explores and depicts gay stereotypes whilst being so like, absurdly positive about the main dynamic.

Bedrooms and Hallways (1998, dir. Rose Troche) - A young gay lad joins a local men's group and his presence causes absolute chaos by voicing his attraction to another member. Several stories at once here, and also quite a joyfully bisexual story, with both M/M and F/M lines!

Poor Things (2023, dir. Yorgos Lanthimos) - Surreal and strange and beautiful and bizarre, this is a joyfully bisexual and richly hedonistic love story centering on a remade young woman's exploration of her identity, her body, and the world around her. Has both F/M and F/F elements, and is set in a vaguely period / steampunk mishmash of eras and aesthetics.

Big Eden (2000, dir. Thomas Bezucha) - Another love story that's as much about the affection and adoration a community has for its members as it is about the romance between its two leads - contemporary M/M between a white artist from the city returning to his home town, and a Native American who owns the general store there.

A Nice Indian Boy (2024, dir. Roshan Sethi) - This is a new release, and it's just lovely, it's an M/M romance between two Hindu men, one an Indian-American and the other a white man adopted by Indian parents, now orphaned. This one is a really great exploration of a love story as more hollistic and about marrying into the family, not just the marriage between the two individuals.

Maurice (1987, dir. James Ivory) - A classic piece of queer cinema based on the classic text by EM Forster: a love story set in the 1930s that goes through a lot of tragedy and hardship, but ultimately culminates in a beautiful M/M inter-class HEA love story.

Fire Island (2022, dir. Andrew Ahn) - This is sublime, it's a queer Pride and Prejudice retelling on Fire Island in the US with a cast of mostly young hot East Asian Americans, just an excellent M/M romance throughout.

But I'm A Cheerleader (1999, dir. Jamie Babbit) - F/F contemporary romcom here, this one is a regular classic for a reason. Very iconic and very quotable.

My Beautiful Laundrette (1985, dir. Stephen Frears) - Another big piece of iconic cinema here, this one is more a historical romance with a focus on identity and community but there is still the M/M romantic throughline and some incredible intimacy throughout, between a Pakistani man and his lover whilst they run and restore a laundrette.

God's Own Country (2017, dir. Francis Lee) - Big art cinema here, M/M romance between a Yorkshireman and a Romian migrant worker during lambing season in rural Yorkshire. Lots of pastoral elements present in this flick, naturally, with sharing of expertise and understanding, working through and past expectations of toxic masculinity and the like.

Another Country (1984, dir. Marek Kanievska) - Old classic here based on the play, set in the 1930s, starring baby Colin Firth and Rupert Everett, this has elements of M/M romance with a HEA, particularly if you know of the real-life Guy Burgess, on whom the MC Guy Bennett is based. One storyline is focused on a young man caught between his school's demands and expectations of British national pride and his own ethical and moral draw towards communism; the other is on a young gay man who is proud of how and whom he loves, and how those around him are in many ways dismissive and even forgiving of his queerness, but only because they expect it to cease when he leaves school.

Obviously most people will already be familiar with The Birdcage (1996) and the original La cage aux folles (1978), but I just wanted to also recommend Ideal Home (2018), which is not a Romance exactly but has a really beautiful central romance and is in large part about the main gay couple taking in their grandson whilst working on their own relationship, it's a contemporary M/M dynamic; and The Full Monty (1997), which is ultimately a story about sexy working class masculinity embraced and discovered through stripping, but features a very poignant M/M love story between two of the side characters in the main cast.

I’m aro/ace, and I’ve noticed that a lot of other aro/aces say that allos see friendship as a stepping stone to sex or romance, and less important than romantic relationships. I guess it makes sense, but my best friend irl is a gay boy (im a girl) and he obviously isn’t interested in dating an aro/ace girl. I made a post saying this and people in the notes were saying that he’s either secretly bi and lying to make me feel safe, or I’m an egg. I don’t believe either of those things but it got me wondering, is it common for allos to use friendship as a way to get close to people for the purpose of dating or having sex with them? Personally I’ve never experienced that but enough aro/aces are saying it that I have to wonder

okay so we need to start with the part about your best friend, because it's really important to me that we take a minute to recognize anyone trying to convince you that a gay boy is only hanging out with you because he has secret romantic feelings is being a homophobe. I mean, listen, it's annoying and childish when people act like men and women can't be friends in general, okay? but in this case they're not just being heteronormative, they're being actively homophobic. block anyone who said that. jesus christ.

secondly: I don't know if you've ever, like, spent time with people, but yes, many folks find romantic partners amongst their circles of friends because that's who they spend a lot of time with and build meaningful connections with, which can develop into feelings of sexual or romantic attraction for people who experience those things. I'd say it's less often a a case of anyone "using" friendship as a means to an end and more often a case of people realizing that a friendship is taking an exciting new direction and deciding to pursue those feelings.

there's a long-lasting trope, especially prominent it sitcoms and romcoms, of someone (usually a sleezy man) acting friendly to get close to someone else (usually a woman) with the intent of seducing them, but a.) like most works of fiction, that's much less common in real life, and b.) there's a huge difference between lying to someone intentionally and just developing a crush on someone you already know and like, which I think is the MUCH more common scenario.

like, don't get me wrong here, it's absolutely true that we live in a society(TM) that pretty materially privileges romantic relationships - specifically monogamous, legally-binding relationships - over other types of relations, and that's a fucking doozy. that's a thing to work on, for sure. but it's also not weird or creepy that some people couple up with their buddies.

I hope those fans realize that there’s no rom com where the main character gets back together with the person they rebounded with because they have feelings for someone else. Tommy played the definition of a plot device and now he’s gotten the ball rolling on buck realizing he has feelings for Eddie and now the general audience whom never ever thought about buddie now think about buddie and gay Eddie.

Well you've got to understand that a lot of them are watching the show as if Tommy is the main character whose intentions and fate we should care about. And from that pov it makes sense (to them) that this is the start of the slow burn or getting-back-together part of the romcom, ignoring that the tropes the show uses are for Buck and not for Tommy. This is why they're currently doing Maddie bashing, because they can't come up with a good explanation for why she wasn't enthusiastically telling Buck to get back together with Tommy in this Tommy-centric world they've created, when reality is that she gave him normal and good sisterly support.

wandee goodday anon reporting back, i enjoyed it so very much. loved the characters, loved the dynamics, wanted to punch dr ter in the nose a few times. i loved that there wasn't a episode 11 of doom?? and how generally light and colourful the show is, both in mood and visually especially as i watched never let me go (phuwin's kissing is my enemy but that's off topic) just before lmao, the contrast was something else.

i also was delighted to have a side couple that a) was established from the start and b) only had drama totally unrelated to their relationship and stayed wholesome and loving each other the whole time, cher bestest boyfriend/brother in law/son in law/gym manager 💕💕.

the whole one night stand to fwb to fake dating thing in 2.5 episodes was hilarious and so was the fake dating to swimming in denial for about the whole rest of the show taking about one or two episodes, thank god yak got clarity soon enough because i would've tried to punch him too but he ended up having the patience of an angel. i was highly entertained that being seen in a same sex relationship as a public figure was a problem for him that lasted a whole 5 minutes too.

dee is the loveliest bean and i love a character who stands their ground when the person who rejected them just magically realises their feelings when a new love interest appears, like how many times was ter basically told to get lost ffs.

oh right i also love a forgiving parents for things that are actually forgivable moment because i've had enough of the shittiest parents of the decade in drama-land crying over their faults for a minute and the kids are like yknow what it's okay i don't mind about the trauma you gave me anymore ✌️🤪

had fun spotting a few places from other shows (golf's gay café, vivi's place in love sea -love what they did to it btw, dee's place might be one of my favourite fiction apartments-, boston's pace) and had even more fun laughing at emi's hair extensions, who did that to my girl?? and that ~american~ champion whatshisname's thick ass french accent.

all in all, 10/10 show, greatinn are wonderful together, might rewatch in the future, can't wait for the memoir of rati heartbreak (i was already looking forward to it bc of actual plot reasons but now that i've seen the guys in it can act good and kiss pretty, it's all bonus points).

I'm so glad you liked it! Sorry it took so long for me to respond to this. I was actually in the process of re-watching Wandee Goodday myself and wanted to finish it before I answered this ask. It's such a good show and stands up very well even on a rewatch.

Since you watched after the fact, you avoided most of the fandom drama, but when I tell you people hated this show and yet continued watching week after week just to shit on it. It was one of my more bizarre fandom experiences for sure. Like I get why there was drama surrounding Only Friends. I don't get why there were such a visceral reaction to a cute little romcom.

The highlights for me were the incorporation of casual sex into the narrative in a way I felt was realistic and, of course, OyeiCher who still have my whole heart. Emi's extensions were an absolute travesty.

One thing I did notice on my rewatch which I missed the first time through is that Yak often switches his polite particle to "ka" when talking to Dee, which is very soft and flirtatious. The reason it stood out to me is that I've noticed Great does this with Inn too and I wonder if it was his choice to change the dialogue rather than something that was in the script?

Memoir of Rati only has 2 or 3 Qs left, so I'm hoping we will get it by June. I have a lot of faith in this screenwriter and am very excited to see GreatInn again because I miss them terribly 😭

A Study of Resonance is brilliant but ultimately left me high and dry because the tension (couldn't find any other word) between Tom and Percy didn't really result in anything, not even an acknowledgement that there's something going on ...

In general, what are your feelings on fics where two leads have insane chemistry and there's a clear possibility that they may end up together, but nothing of the sort happens? Like their equation remains a question mark and the romantic undertones never really become anything concrete?

Maybe it's because I'm aromantic but I cannot relate to this at all! I think the story would have been much worse if it executed the romance entirely. Sure, I'd love a what-if AU, of course I would, but the story is perfect the way it is.

And to me "obvious romantic undertones left hanging" is such a staple of queer literature it's actually a little surprising to see anyone express this concept as a generically negative trope while applying it to a gay relationship.

But even for heterosexuals. I would never in a million years say the ending of My Best Friend's Wedding detracted or denied me catharsis. There had never been a more satisfying and emotionally rewarding ending to a romcom. I bawled.

As on why I think it would detract from the quality, spoilers for the fic under the cut:

I think Tom or Percy acting on their desires would have made for a significantly worse story. Percy begins every engagement with Lord Voldemort by fumbling that bag to a point that is nigh-apocalyptic. He is constantly emotionally manipulated through a reified image of masculine friendship. He is the exact type of person Tom preys upon, Tom goes "yeah, I prey on guys like this", and exploits him in a way so obvious Snape should have been admitted to St. Mungos for ulcers. And when Percy steps up and starts changing his approach, what he is reading is "I understand him, because a part of him is in me". He toes this feathered and invisible line going purely off nothing but a very raw and vulnerable self-identification in the other.

Moving onto romance would ruin this. Moving onto romance would completely shift the entire dynamic from "I am him and he knows that, a thing I believe because of my understanding of 2 perspectives" to "I can fix him, a thing I believe because I like him so much", especially in the ending arcs where Percy and Tom's mutual love and willingness to kill each other is in perfect synchronicity and we start seeing Tom fumble the bag as he loses understanding of Percy's capacity for character development. How can he fumble a bag he already secured 🫤

And they did like. Kiss. Like they had a gay m/m romantic kiss in the text. I wouldn't say their romantic arc goes unacknowledged, because they kiss and Percy expresses uneasiness and embarrassment with this in a way that communicates that he is considering the homosexual ramifications of his actions. Like yes it's not resolved, Percy doesn't ever come to a concrete conclusion on what that kiss means, but it's very "is Hannibal in love with me?" in its expression. They are feeling out what they're not acting on.

And of course like...is Percy even in a place to be in a relationship? What would "ending up together" look like? How would the forbidden love angle even work here? Percy at this point is absolutely fucking fried, he got his self-conception scrubbed out of him with steel wool and his soul is bleeding on the counter. He is not seeking intimacy or love atp he is seeking the divine release of god. He would not only find no respite in frotting it would make him suicidal. Hasn't he suffered enough

........On the other hand I do kind of wish the Percy/Snape was a lil more concrete because it had me gagging. It had me dying on the floor. It had me wilting like a little flower. It wouldn't take away anything it would just be different and I want to play in the greener grass please fucking god please❤️ 😇🔫

Learning from Lorch (and hazcrit): Very Reasonable Demands.

Seeing as hazcrit is doing to Sai exactly what Sai pointed out that they are doing to vivzie, I feel now is a good time for this post. For what is Hazcrit other than SUcrit that was reheated in the desk microwave? The desk microwave of none other than Lily Orchard, of course! Memes aside, the SU is garbage vid was a prized by the SUcrit community and like... that says a lot more than it should.

Now, to preface my ensuing info dump, one question I ask myself in the myriad of questions I use to formulate my critique is, "How could I have done this better?" Though not as what I am currently. I am an independent hobbyist writer with no oversight, no team to manage, no deadlines, the full script of Steven Universe, nearly a decade of knowledge about every shortcoming and controversy both intentionally and not, and most of all no financial or creative incentives to reach as many people as humanly possible. Could I make a better Steven Universe special for me with all that in my pocket? Short answer: yeh. Long answer: Of fucking course I could, stupid. Rebecca and vivzie had few to none of these benefits. In fact, they had about the opposite in most ways. I'll admit that they are still 6/10 shows because this is by far from the only metric, but what many of the crits seem to think are the most important.

Now, I could bring up the infamous lines of SU is garbage where Lily calls the show both not gay enough and too gay, but I feel like pointing that out has been both been done better by others, and is Lazy since even in Lily's own words those statements are from an embittered lily a decade ago... so I brought this!

Lightly edited, but I am not watching the video to get the unedited one. Either way on the surface, this shit doesn't seem to be a tall ask, but you know your boy will break it down clean how it really is, step by step.

1. Must be a healthy relationship. Doesn't sound like a tall ask at all, right? Let's just hope that the story isn't about say, I dunno, working on a relationship at all. Or in a setting where maintaining a healthy relationship might be hard.... I'd bring up that not every person has the same definition of healthy, but there's a lot of these to chew through.

2. Needs to be human/human adjacent. Well, there goes any story about being loved for who you are and not what you look like, right out with the bathwater. Also what about two monsters and/or aliens being gay? I know that's not the point,but that's why we word carefully.

3. Relationships must be present before finale. Doable.... unless you are doing something where them meeting is far more fun and tumultuous than when they get steady. So, like... many sitcoms, romcoms, and a lot of romance in general. Like this is one of the most doable, but the amount you can miss out on is quite humbling.

4.No burying. I know she means the trope bury your gays, but I will point out that this clobbers tragedy with a steel chair.

5. MUST be main characters. So, no solo adventures. Honestly, this isn't the worst either, but I do love the implication that side characters just do not count anymore. Nobody likes characters that don't have top billing anyway, I'm sure.

6. No pussyfooting. I see what she means, but as somebody that can see past my own nose, this catches stories about closeted gays or any sexual awakening stories in the crossfire easy.

7. It's hard to define, but I'm going to interpret that any lore reasoning, positive or negative, affecting the character's relationship is bad. Which... oof to any high fantasy.

It's not fucking impossible, but just look at what is left on the table after this!

Now, if you are like Lily, a hobbyist vignette writer. It's not that hard. Incredibly doable. Easy work even!... but we now have to add conditions.

Take whatever vignette you cooked up. And now it needs to be a full product. 300+ page book, 26 episode show, respectability sized graphic novel, whatever poison you desire. I still think it could be done, but if you put a gun to my head, my confidence in anything I just planned sunk like a tungsten cube through air.

So let's do that metaphorically! That is how the industry works, after all. You gotta sell this idea to a guy whose only God is the almighty dollar. Unshakable if you can't convince them that publishing your crap is worth the investment. Like shit it ain't even have to be gay anymore. Knock the rep off, and that's still a BIG ask. I wouldn't say it just isn't possible. I just know anything I came up with initially certainly isn't something I'd pay for.

This is a statement I tend to blanket over the haz and SU crit when I see it. More often than not, they are asking for things that only sound reasonable in hindsight, or if it was an independent production that answers to no-one, or it just wasn't your speed and that's somehow not your problem... Nothing less than the vision of perfection that's specifically in my head? Right?

That's why I tend to believe Sai when she calls it misogyny. I've seen male creators do worse to DEAFENING silence. Was SU perfect? Obviously not. Was it good enough to communicate some heavy stuff to its audience of 14-17 year Olds? You betcha. Is Hazbin that great? Not incredible, but I'd argue it's better than 80% of adult animation currently being made.

But hey, I'm pretty sure there's a term for tying a less than perfect woman to a poll and burning them.

INSTANT. james dean and marlon brando levels of ARE YOU TWO FUCKING?? but they literally just met. and marc has been a fan of vale's forever but not just the comedies also his earlier dramatic stuff (apocalyptic little gay crush) and they have similar taste in movies and vale is sooooo funny and it is OFF to the races. like. i cannot emphasize this enough they are fucking the WHOLE time. every scene in this movie its just leaping off the screen... they go in to film and its like that BTS clip of the americans where the director was having matthew rhys and keri russell do a sex scene and theyre suspiciously comfortable pretending to 69 and he turns to his assistant and just goes. oh yeah these guys have fucked. they are wayyyy to comfy hitching the other's pussy into their face lmao. just fucking going for it. the director is like hey guys. can you tone it down a little. marc biggggg smile okayyyyyy :3

and the movie comes out and they attend the premiere all smiley and bouncy and feeling really good about the project and then, theyy watch it. and its like. uh oh! not a lot of acting happening there ! um. best performance of either of their careers and they both look at it an can identify all the points they werent acting like evil little signal flares.... and vale shuts marc out HARD yadayadayada the Usual Rosquez Breakup Ensues.... until they both get cast in a revival of the brokeback mountain stage play and shit pops off in the most nuclear explosion of horny heartbreak to ever hit the STAGE…
