A massive extinct monkey from Pleistocene Africa and Eurasia. It is estimated to have been more than double the size of its modern relative, the Gelada monkey (Theropithecus gelada), the last surviving species of Theropithecus.

This giant relative of the modern gelada was a remarkably large monkey, possibly weighing some 159 pounds (72kg). It was likely a ground-dwelling grass-eater like its living cousin, with fossils found in the south, north, and east of Africa, and even in southern Spain. It co-existed with our ancient ancestor species.

Theropithecus gelada is a wild primate that demonstrates cryptic female choice through a gestation mechanism. The females have been reported to have a strong Bruce effect. Bruce effect is when the female terminates the pregnancy when she is exposed to an unrelated male.[10] Female gelada's terminate about 80% of their pregnancies the week after the dominant male has been replaced. This could be because males typically perform infanticide when they take over a new group. Terminating a pregnancy could be a female's way to protect herself and avoid infanticide of her young. Studies have been shown to support the hypothesis that the Bruce effect can be an adaptive strategy for females.[10]

Gelada (Theropithecus gelada)

A less well-known but equally stunning relative of the mandrill, the gelada is found exclusively in the grassy Ethiopian highlands. By night, they avoid predators by sleeping on cliff ledges which only they can reach. They eat more grass than any other primate, using their hands to dig it out of the ground and chewing it like an ungulate.
