Ok critters, I see your “no one is a doppelgänger” theory and raise you this. There is exactly ONE doppelgänger when they were told there would be two.

kyomi: "pure and beautiful, to cleanse." named after her paternal grandmother, it was one handed down every few generations to those who seemed to shine bright with purity from birth, which was exactly what she appeared to have done. as she grew, she always had a shining glint in her eye, though many would say it's one of mischief while others see differently.
tausa'afia: " pleasant, lovable " in the first few days of her life, she didn't have a middle name as their family reserved it for when their personality began to shine through, that way they had a name that fit them that emerged later on. kyomi was a sweet and adorable baby, capturing the hearts of anyone who held or even looked at her, hence why her middle names meaning reflects just that.

" — sawada keizaburo, attempting to comfort his best friend after being unsure of whether her unborn child will survive due to being forced to fight in the kengan annihilation matches despite her condition.
" you still haven't figured it out yet, 'omi? you cannot love both of us and act like it's fine and dandy. fucking pick or i'll kill him right now. romantic interest(s) . . ohma tokita & ichiro 'lihito' nakata — ❛ you’re selfish, is what you are. making us both love you and then refusing to choose, what the fuck is your game? ❜
— ohma 'the ashura' tokita : my, oh my. the relationship between ohma and kyomi began when they first encountered each other during her first trip to japan 2 years prior, representing Omni Air International and winning 27 consecutive matches before the annihilation tournament took place. they met in a coffee shop, he decided to stop in and devour whatever pastries they had on display for the day, and due to his large, intimidating frame, most people were afraid of him and kept his distance; not kyomi. she found his seemingly brooding and potentially aggressive nature comical in contrast to the sweet treats he was eating, so she being the outgoing individual she was, went up to him and asked him how the desserts tasted now that he'd robbed everyone else of the chance. her boldness and confidence in the way she carried herself was enough to catch his attention and intrigue, so he invited her to sit with him and try the remains of what he hadn't inhaled just yet. it was in that sit down, taste testing the different assortments that laid in front of them, that a bond was formed and only grew with the more time they spent together, finding more commonalities than initially suspected. as close as they got, there was still a wall put up between the two of them, set up unintentionally by both parties to refrain from either getting hurt. this didn't stop jealousy and possessiveness to overwhelm the 'relationship' that they had developed, resulting in it's momentary end in an explosive way. now, two months later, they met once again at the kengan annihilation tournament representing their respective companies, which was a shock to them both, especially on her end. the greatest shock for ohma was when the new 'superhuman' he had been introduced to a little while prior to this, was now following around his woman like a puppy, only sparking the killer instinct within him that lie just beneath the surface. that, and the hickies and love marks that covered her body in the most obvious and infuriating places. now aggressive and hostile toward the woman who somehow held a vice grip on his heart, he couldn't help but blame himself at the same time for allowing her to slip through his fingers, however he will be damned if he lets 'lihito' steal what's his. with kyomi seeming to decide that she was fine with loving the both of them, fucking the both of the, that was when he snapped and would become a much more outwardly angry person than his usual calm demeanor, lashing out at any person who happened to make the wrong comment in his presence. despite his feelings of rage and hostility toward the situation, he couldn't help the fact that he loved her, and he would continue to love her even if he hated the choices that she was making, and the fact that even though he knew her for two years time now, it still felt as though she was hiding a part of herself from him, which was frustrating for the fighter, because in their long nights together, he had spilled his guts to her, given her every part of him, and he was met with this.
— ichiro ‘lihito’ nakata : meeting this goddess was a complete accident, one that ichiro was more grateful for than he cared to admit out loud- scratch that, he'd happily yell it from whatever roof top she requested. having met after he was observing his competition for the next few matches, he quickly took notice of the seemingly unbeatable 'pele', swiftly deciding two things: that she would soon be his, and he did not want to fight her in any upcoming matches, because he knew he would get his ass handed to him, and that wasn't something the self proclaimed superhuman could afford to his ego or image. after she mopped the floor with her opponent, he approached her and asked if she would like to get something to eat, explaining he knew just how strenuous and appetite increasing these matches could be, it didn't take much pressure to get her to agree. the two went to an authentic japanese ramen shop, as she had never been before and had only been in japan for a few days, which was mostly spent fighting or training, this being the first time she actually had a moment to herself to breath. they ate bowl after bowl, stacking the piles high as they could go before ichiro realized that this woman had not only stolen his heart, but emptied his wallet as well, not that he minded. her smile and full belly was all he cared about at that moment. over the next few months, the two became closer and closer, though there was weeks where she would pull away and disappear, for reasons he did not know of; come to find out much later, she was spending the other parts of her time with the infamous ohma tokita, his self decided rival in the kengan matches. this discovery once they had arrived at the tournament only fueled ichiro's rage and desire to win, to prove that he was the better man, the stronger man, the one for her. though the two decided amongst themselves that they would compete for her heart, they were infuriated to see that she decided that it was fine to simply love them both, which wouldn't have been too terrible for him if it wasn't for the fact that ohma made it abundantly clear that he wasn't okay with that, and would repeatedly threaten ichiro's life, which was met with the response of 'try it' every single time. the relationship that they have is a rather lax and easy going one, though at times he can be a bit smothering and over-protective, that's only because he doesn't want to lose out on what he sees as his one chance at happiness.
backstory . . kyomi was born the only child to a long line of renowned martial artists, one that had developed it's own style that included many aspects that weren't included in the traditional way of teaching. over 1500 years ago, her ancestors figured out how to manipulate matter and atoms, giving them partial manipulation over their surroundings as well as a physical power up. they also figured out the ability to heal themselves faster through the power of meditation, which came in handy for those who chose to be warriors, such as kyo. the longer the line, the more ancestors that could be called upon for assistance in a fight, using their knowledge and own distinct styles of fighting, the stronger the power up, making kyomi at the time, the strongest ever of her line, surpassing that of her past life and previous tribal chief by what seemed like miles. from a young age, she displayed strong discipline and technique, mastering things thrown at her within a few days time and leaving her teachers in absolute awe, as well as her parents, though they also beamed with happiness. the ancestral spirit didn't manifest in every generation, it only happened when the current host dies, so it can be passed to the new one, which so happened to be a feisty, strong-willed and opinionated young woman who was more than willing to kill for her goals and those she cares for. at the age of 16, she made the mistake of getting too attached to a tourist visiting one of the vacation spots on the main parts of her island, resulting in her losing her virginity and discovering she was pregnant a few months later. with the support of her family and village, she had her children and would not have been able to handle it without the backing that she had. as chieftess in training, her father and mother handled most things for her while she focused on her own children, but also growing up still given she had them so young. it was during this time that it became apparent that she was suffering from post-partum-rage, which was honed and harnessed into a deadly weapon to add precision and greater force behind her strikes. at the age of 18, she was brought to omni air international headquarters by her best friend, being told that her father wanted someone strong to represent his company in what was known as the kengan matches in japan. this didn't appeal to her too much, initially she refused, but when her home and tribe were threatened with extinction, her own children who were innocent, she had no choice but to comply. her best friend had no knowledge of this, and was unable to stop her father from forcing her companions hand, but it was no use, he would not budge on his decision. she was the strongest by far that he had come across, and he wouldn't let her slip through his fingers when he had the power to bend her to his will, no matter the rage and resentment he was building within his fighter. after saying her goodbyes to her one and a half year olds, her parents and her village, she set off to japan, where she found it hard to adjust to the culture and the language, resulting in many fights and brawls due to misunderstandings. it was during this time that she met several people who would become close friends and mentors to her, the relationships forming due to their close proximity from the kengan matches, as they were all participants in some way or another. the romantic relationships she did not plan for, and being the privileged person that she was, assumed that she would just be able to have both of the people who had captured her heart, not taking their feelings into consideration whatsoever. this was a result of no one taking hers into consideration for bringing her there in the first place, forcing her to fight for the lives of her people and not being allowed to lose no matter what. she cared very little for what people viewed as 'fair', even if she did love them.
extra . . — kyomi is ambidextrous, though the punches from her left hand hurt far more than the ones from her right, she believes most of her past lives were prodominantly left handed, which she finds awesome as hell.
— even after two years, the people closest to her, aside from sawada and wakatsuki, known nothing about her life back in hawaii, which is something that she prefers to keep due to her not knowing who she can truly trust anymore.
— though both ohma tokita and ichiro nakata have perminent places in her heart, if she was forced to choose, she would have to drop them both because she couldn't bear hurting one by choosing the other
— sawada interestingly enough knew kyomi before she came to japan, having met her a few times when he and his employer made trips to hawaii to open new stores there for murder music, as he was her body guard as well as fighter. the two clicked while she was pregnant, he was very kind and thoughtful when interacting with her, never once judged her and was there when her twins were born. he's a brother that she never had, acting as her protector and best friend all at the same time; the relationship she has with lihito makes him sick to his stomach but it's her life, and he refuses to say anything for fear of getting his face kicked in.
— she and raian have an unspoken rivalry, due to them both having destructive power, and her being referred to as 'the devil's match'. kyomi finds his blood lust entertaining and would love to fight him, him feeling the same with her, but having a bordering obsession with her as well, having to keep constant tabs on her and be aware of where she is at all times, something he does his best to keep hidden from everyone, including those in the kure clan. If anyone is going to beat her for good it would be him.

Writing prompt: Staying up half the night to finish a game with them.
Wordless Ways to Say “I Love You”
47. Staying up half the night to finish a game with them.
At first, Miranda think that Shepard’s relentless insomnia is her fault. Something she overlooked. A miscalculation somewhere that has created a serotonin imbalance, or maybe something has gone wrong with his cortisol or adrenal levels.
She first notices the problem after leaving Omega. She’d emerged from her cabin for a cup of tea to find Shepard sitting at a table in the silent mess, toying with a few crackers and scrolling through a datapad.
Concerning.
Since then it’s followed a pattern. He spends some nights in Mordin’s lab. The salarian needs so little sleep he’s almost always awake, and the two seem to get on rather well. Either that or his endless prattle leaves fewer silences to fill.
Other nights he stays in his quarters. She doesn’t have cameras in there, but EDI confirms he spends hours at his desk, sleeping in his chair – if he sleeps at all – as often as he does the bed.
She asks his permission to run tests. He denies it, growing more and more defensive each time she brings it up. So she stops asking. Once she goes to Mordin for his professional opinion, to which he good-naturedly replies, “Don’t discuss patient matters without consent.”
That at least suggests Mordin has discussed it. But judging from Shepard’s continued insomnia, he does not have a solution.
“Has he always slept poorly?” she asks Moreau. If it’s a chronic issue, that is at least new information she doesn’t have. She’s gleaned much from his service record and the intel the Illusive Man had provided her with, but behavioral patterns leave a large hole.
“I’m not his nanny,” Joker had replied, annoyed. Miranda knows better than to ask Dr. Chakwas. If the salarian won’t discuss it, Shepard’s physician certainly won’t. But she also isn’t helping him sleep.
They treat Miranda like the enemy when she just wants to help. This was so much easier when she had full control. But he is not her project anymore. He is a fully functioning, stubborn and vexing individual.
And he’s not sleeping.
She’d been so thorough. Why is this one thing so out of place?
The deck of cards appears after Horizon. Miranda strategically gets a cup of tea right around the time Shepard usually wanders into the mess, and tonight he’s right on schedule. But Vakarian and Moreau are already sitting there, playing a game of War almost like they’ve been waiting for him.
“This is a stupid game,” Garrus tells Joker. “It’s pure chance if I can’t look at my cards. There’s no strategy. It’s mindless.”
“That’s the point,” Joker replies. “Play your card, coward.”
Miranda is baffled as to why either of them are still awake. After everything they dealt with on Horizon her body feels like lead, she had been in the lift when the turian fantasized in great detail about the sleep he planned to enjoy that night.
Shepard turns the coffee pot on and leans against the counter to watch them. His eyes are bleary and there’s a tremble in his hands that suggests a dose of stims.
Wait. Is he keeping himself awake?
Garrus’s glance shifts Shepard’s way. His mandibles quiver. “This is only a two-person game, right?”
“Yeah,” Joker says.
“Perfect, Shepard, care to join us?” Garrus gestures to the open seat beside him.
Shepard sits – more like oozes – into the seat, posture slouched with weariness. He blinks, listening but unfocused, as if keeping his attention in the room or even on the Normandy is too great a task. “What do we play?”
Joker eyes Miranda warily. “If Lawson joins in, we can play Horse.”
“What?” Garrus asks.
“Never heard of it,” Shepard says.
“I’ll teach you.”
Garrus flicks a mandible. “What’s a horse?”
“Kind of like those shifty cows we saw on Ontarom,” Shepard replies. “Only less likely to steal your credits.”
“Why not poker?” Miranda asks, cautiously taking a seat. Not because she wants to play, but because the chance to observe is not something she’s willing to turn down. Poker is at least a game she knows, and poses less risk she’ll make a fool out of herself.
“No,” Joker and Garrus say in unison. Joker shoots her a dirty look. Shepard stares at the table and scratches the back of his neck. Miranda shifts in her seat. She doesn’t know why the suggestion was offensive, but doesn’t argue. She’ll investigate it later.
“Teach me Horse,” Shepard says.
It’s a stupid game with too many nonsensical rules. Even though no one but Joker understands how Jacks work in this context, Shepard quickly proves his luck isn’t just confined to the battlefield.
“There’s no way Garrus had both rights,” Joker laments when Shepard successfully “horses” and takes every trick. She is still lost as to which Jacks are lefts and which ones are rights – she swears they change – or why Garrus gets to pass Shepard cards. But Shepard has something that might pass for a smile on his face, which is at least an improvement even if it doesn’t solve the sleep problem.
When she finally bids them goodnight it’s 03:00 and she still can’t figure out why a Jack of clubs is sometimes considered a spade.
She’s exhausted, sore, still hasn’t completely evened out her electrolyte levels after her output on Horizon, and after that unpleasant confrontation with Shepard’s former crewmate, now has to do some digging into the significance of Commander Alenko before she can finish up her mission report for the Illusive Man.
Shepard looks exhausted too, and this time she thinks he might actually go to his quarters and finally rest. But when Joker makes the suggestion he waves them off.
“You need sleep, friend,” Garrus says. There’s a gentle thrum in his subvocals that even Miranda finds soothing.
“There are so many stars,” Shepard murmurs, digging at his neck with stiff fingers, right where the seal of his helmet would be. His nails leave red streaks against his skin.
Miranda’s heart lurches as she finally understands. His cabin. The open shutters. Alchera. Shepard had died alone in the stars, the same stars that gleam down upon him while he tries to sleep.
So many pieces she had put back together, recreated with near flawless perfection, but she’d never once given thought to perhaps the most important ones. Ones she can’t touch and can’t repair.
But his friends have.
She’s tolerated Vakarian with a vague sense of wariness and even disdain, mistrustful of his intentions, afraid of the influence he might have. But as the turian gingerly rubs Shepard’s back with his talons and some of the tension leaves the commander’s shoulders, she realizes just how greatly she has undervalued his presence.
Likewise, she’s made the foolish miscalculation that Joker is only here for the ship.
The pilot’s eyes are bloodshot, he can’t stop yawning and he needs a shave as much as he needs a good night’s sleep. But instead of calling it a night, Joker picks up the deck and starts to shuffle.
“My deal.”
#theoriginalladya#garrus vakarian#jeff 'joker' moreau#mass effect#miranda lawson#my fic#ok so this is a slightly different take in 'i love you'#but man the platonic love from this crew#especially where shep/joker/garrus are concerned#is the stuff of life#also i don't get to write about me2 shep nearly enough#yes this is sonata!verse#just consider it concept art

Orion Digest №39 - The Paragon Society
The state and its functions are ultimately just a tool - eco-socialist federalism is simply a mechanism to keep peace until we can get back on track. This is not to say that we were ever truly 'on track', but given that we have witnessed the general direction of social progress, we can guess as to where that progress is heading. Many have coveted after the idea of utopia, and such an ideal is perhaps truly unachievable. Nonetheless, aspects of it could be within reach.
What constitutes the utopian idea? The name has become synonymous with perfection, and so within a utopian society, the government must be perfect, people's lives must be without hardship, and the world must have guaranteed peace and safety. The vague promise of utopia is often what constitutes it's downfall - to be perfect means there is no room for improvement, nor discovery or change. Human life is about change, and so our culture and society changes with time, to meet the problems of the times. A perfect society is one that, in a way, simply stops moving, and would likely be unable to adjust to reality.
It is also folly to assume that our lives will be without hardship. For those that are able, labor will always be a necessity for society to function. Even if we automate processes, there will be those that need to tend to the machines. So too will there be struggles beyond just labor and economy - simply living requires one to come to terms with who they are and their place in life, and finding one's place is not without struggle. It is simply part of life, though the barriers through which some are forced to endure more than is necessary can be removed with time.
And so we are brought to the final common utopia, which is that the world is at peace. It is hard to deny that within a world federation, so long as the world is moving according to design, we will have more peace. The world will be one nation, and so the prosperity of the federation is prosperity all can share in. More economic assurance and social welfare means there is less reason for conflict and crime. If change is necessary, it can be brought about democratically through the people. But this is considering that the whole world plays along. Even if the system is designed to succeed, it relies on the willingness of all to coexist and cooperate.
Take, for instance, the crime of robbery. People do it now because it promises an easy and quick shot at a better life through wealth. Given that the economy is disadvantageous to the people already, why not simply take it for yourself instead of playing along? Even if it is usually harmful to others, it still helps you in the end, and ensures that you can live the kind of life you want without sacrificing much of your time to labor. This root cause is what we seek to eliminate with economic reform, but by the time we have developed an economy that requires less labor and offers more favorable opportunity, will the mindset have changed? Even if it's less of a load, there might still be those that want to take the easy way out, and rob from others to skip the toil.
Where there are robbers, there is fear and mistrust among a community, and so people will lock their doors, arm themselves, be afraid to walk at night. People see that robbers can still get away with the crime, and they decide that if others are going to get out of working, so will they, and join in. Even if now, the system has been evened out to make things easier, the people might still be the same, used to these ideas and conditions carried over from the old world, and so things might not change as much as we expect, even if the opportunity is available.
Preventing the rise of monopolies and political corruption is a much easier task than eliminating greed and malice in general. The sociological elements of society are much harder to understand and tackle, and while they are affected by the structure of the system around them, they will also have effects on that structure. A crooked government will breed crooked politicians, which will keep the system in a state of moral disarray. Even if we work to build a better system, we must keep in mind that any system still relies on people, and if those people continue forward, laboring under the ideas that have driven us for millennia, they can take advantage and abuse the power it provides.
It's not to say that human nature is bad, nor that we can never find a sense of peace. It's that we've spent so long fighting each other over the course of generations that we don't know what peace looks like. Just as with nations, so it is the same with individual people - it's hard to be convinced the world isn't about the survival of the fittest, when you, too, would take advantage of opportunities for advancement. Injuries of the past are hard to forget, and most wouldn't offer their hand to strangers a second time if it was shunned the first. This forms perhaps the toughest puzzle of our cause, one that goes beyond eco-socialist federalism - how do we convince the world to unite?
The state we will build is but a tool. While we're starting to get an idea of how to treat other people and what is morally good, the environment we have built around ourselves is a cage that is not conducive to true sociological development. Lifting these restrictions upon us and making a system that allows the chance for equality is the first part, but we will still need to undo the conditioning we have developed. We still have to develop as a society and learn to trust and respect one another, or else we will keep fighting others out of misunderstanding. All sides in a conflict are either in pain or misguided, ultimately victims of ignorance. Should they be brought up to learn, we could begin to solve problems with a handshake and not a knife in the back.
In more concrete terms, we live in what could be called a 'survival society.' On the hierarchy of needs, physical needs such as shelter, food, and water are the absolute minimum, while psychological needs leading up to self-actualization are higher on the list, only accomplished after the survival needs are met. A survival society is one in which the organized structures are insufficient to provide citizens with a means of having their survival needs met, with time and energy to spend on fulfilling secondary needs. Instead, the focus of many citizens, whether due to absence of necessary resources or insecurity due to conflict with others, is primarily on survival, and thus they often have little time to focus on their higher needs.
Even if they can survive without them, this does not mean that higher-level needs are any less of needs. Mental health being overlooked often has dangerous consequences for people's interaction with the rest of society, and results in harm done to many, even if unintentionally so. Societal structures of economy and government not being adequate to universally provide for physical needs, as well as sociological threats to oneself (physical needs becoming even harder to come by due to economic and cultural discrimination) contribute to the flawed idea of a 'survival society', and our goal must be to move beyond this.
The opposite of a survival society is thus a paragon society - a society in which the structures in place, as well as sociological and cultural factors, allow for all members of a civilization to have their physical needs consistently met, so they can expend their energy on higher level needs. If people are not always fighting just to put food on the table and a roof over their heads, perhaps it wouldn't be so hard to slow down and understand each other. If it's not all a race against each other, we can pull our head out of the heat of battle and see our neighbors for who they are, rather than what threat they pose to us.
Over time, this could naturally occur within a federation. After all, if the structural problems are solved, people will become acclimated to it over the course of generations. But the individualist survival mentality could still pose a threat to even the most full-proof system, and would only continue to make it hard on other people. It's not an unfounded habit, but it is one that, to truly improve the world, we need to let go of. There will always be new problems to solve and work to do, but if we could pull off the impossible task of peace, new generations can be born into a brighter world, free to be themselves and to know others without fear.

How about... Klapallo 49?
For this meme and the prompt “coming home”
He’s lost track of all the places he’s lived in his 25 years, although some stand out more than others.
There’s the family manor tucked in the hills of Mittenwald, looming cold and austere on the hillside over the almost fairy-tail like village. It’s where the “commons” his father was oft to remark lived, and considering Klavier had the best tutors and home schooling, money could buy Klavier has few memories in the village town.
The manor is cold and impersonal, and despite it being the ancestral seat of his father’s fathers, Klavier never felt he belonged among the severe and proper halls. Staff kept the immense galleries and rooms neat and orderly, everything had to be in its proper place. It wasn’t until he’s older that Klavier realized that while at any point at least four people and a staff of fifteen lived within the house and grounds, the manor never felt lived in. It was more of a museum to showcase his family’s wealth and past achievements. The current occupants left to spend a lifetime hoping to find a place among the walls for the future generations to remember them by.
The manor is cold and chilling, and sometimes he can’t believe he grew up in such a place.
Kristoph however, fit in perfectly.
Themis Academy is the first place he’s lived, after the manor and the first time he’s lived in a foreign country.
It’s a boarding school and he has to share a room- it’s and odd thing to have to share your space when you’re twelve (a whole two years younger than most of your classmates) when you’ve never had to before.
He’s not alone per se, Kristoph is an hour (plane ride) away at Stanford.
His roommate is nice, a foreign student like himself, so they have that to bond over at least. Joo-won will go on to be one of Klavier’s closer friends at Themis, and years later, Joo-won joins the record label and is assigned to The Gavinner’s legal council.
Klavier remembers being excited for this new chapter in his life, his first adventure, really. Excited to learn about the Law, eager to explore “LaLa Land” itself and see if he could make his rock-star dreams come true. He’s prepared himself for the homesickness.
In fact he’s read up on the feeling and ways to treat the melancholy so he won’t waste a second of this new life missing out on his old.
It’s almost three months into his semester when he realizes, that the homesickness never came.
Tour-busses are an experience all to their own. The Label has spared no expense on customizing their small fleet of buses to have every luxury and comfort as they spent hours on the road.
It’s somewhere between the lulling bouncing for hours on an airplane and wonder one gets when they wake up in a new port of call, when on a cruise boat.
It’s a surreal experience- he’s on a bus for hours and days at a time, watching countrysides drift by, but he has a sound proofed room to practice for the next concert and a small state of the art recording booth should the muses deign to visit.
The bands moves around too much for Klavier to get attached to any one place. He supposes the bus is his home now, considering the hours he’s racked up in his moving living quarters, but at times Klavier feels the detachedness of the family manor. The bus is always pristine and nice, and despite who is occupying it, never really has a personal touch other than the Record Label’s branding.
The feeling of comradely, however, is nice. When he’d left Themis to return to Germany for his badge, he’d missed having his friends about him while he studied. Now he had his bandmates, his closest and creative kindred spirits.
Jam-sessions that are never recorded and only live in their memories, long running games of Spades in his bunk, eating and touring across so many cities and countries, that sometimes Klavier has to scroll back through years of Instagram posts (his personal- not the Label’s- they’d scrubbed a majority of the Gavinner’s posts, especially ones that featured Daryan) to specifically remember them all.
It’s a nice adventure filled with the warmth Klavier needs after his disastrous debut and to distract him from his nightmares of that case. But he never feels safe.
Each night when he and Daryan bid each other goodnight and climb into their respective buses, Klavier willingly pushes down the nagging sense of fragility of the distraction he’s chosen to take him far away from his brother and Phoenix Wright.
After nearly a decade of being on the road, he comes back to Los Angeles as a prosecutor. He’s divested himself from any stipends the Label provides, because despite still being a Rock Star, he’s also a public servant. The waters of the “Dark Age of the Law” churn constantly with scandals and public opinion towards their Justice System sinks lower and lower by the day, and Klavier is loath to add any reason for his peers and public to mistrust him.
“Go in to court with clean hands and all that jazz,” he thinks, “well, as clean as my hands can be…”
Fortunately he’s amassed a nice nest egg through being a world-famous rockstar and his endorsement deals.
He buys a nice home in the Hollywood Hills…because, well..what else is he to do? He’s Klavier Gavin after all.
It’s a spacious Spanish-style, with rooms for days, a pool as big as his other celebrity neighbors; high-privacy walls so the celebrity tour-buses won’t see him, with a price tag that will certainly give him an amazing tax-break and justifies the home values of the neighborhood.
He doesn’t balk at the price; it’s a good investment for him. Other celebrities blow their money on cars, drugs, women, and gambling. Property no matter what is a good place to put his money (and his guitars) so he doesn’t think it a waste.
What is a waste, is the interior decorator who is tasked to create the space worthy of “Klavier Gavin’s” flare. The decorator and his team do and amazing job of it, Klavier figures.
It’s a shame because between being a world-famous Rock Star and a full-time prosecutor, he’s barely lives in the home he’s bought in the Hollywood Hills.
At least the “Hollywood Homes” Tours enjoy it.
Two years since coming back to the courts full-time, he’s moved to Century City. It’s a duplex- still luxerous to match his tastes, but fits his needs better than the house in Hollywood Hills ever did. That home he sold and re-invested the money elsewhere, to the frustration of the Hollywood Tourism Board.
He lives in the duplex with Vongole. It’s closer to work, it’s in a section of the city that lets him have the glitz and glamour but also allows him to hit dive bars and be close to the local-music scene. Sometimes his colleagues come over to work on cases with him, and he doesn’t have to worry if his living space makes his co-workers feel out of place.
It’s a good place to live and he’s happy. But he can’t shake the feeling that his apartment is more of a means to an end.
The first time he feels it, he’s not at the address of his formally listed residence. He still lives in Century City, but since his and Apollo’s relationship has become more serious, Klavier finds himself more and more at Apollo’s small studio apartment in Atwater Village.
The day’s weather had been so hot he’d soaked through his dress shirt before he’d climbed all the way up the steps of the court. The cases he’d dealt with- hellish as if to match the weather.
And despite winning his cases, Klavier’s mood remained sour. At the office, Edgeworth had given him almost all of Payne’s pending cases, as the man had been suspended (again) by the Chief Prosecutor.
A long day of paperwork, re-filing the cases that his intern had sloppily sorted (because they’d had a hot date that evening and needed to leave early), and the discovery that all of his cases over the rest of the month would take him to court houses on opposite sides of the city daily, Klavier was thoroughly exhausted by the time he parked his motorcycle at Apollo’s building.
It’s when he steps off the elevator on the third floor that he smells it. Smells the aroma of ground pork and onions; the air spiced with garlic and a feeling that his chasing away his dark mood.
He realizes he knows this smell. The grocery cart parked outside of the apartment door with a box with a few scraps of corn husks, further confirms his suspicion that Apollo’s cooking. Tamales, if Klavier isn’t mistaken.
Sure enough when he enters, he’s greeted to the sight of Apollo’s back and the ties of the red apron his boyfriend is wearing. He’s busy forming the filling mixture with his hands, and on the small stove of the galley kitchen, the heat is rising in the dutch oven to cook off the stuffed corn husks.
When Apollo turn to smile at him, Klavier is drawn to press up behind him. Wrap his arms about the smaller frame and kiss Apollo’s warm cheek. Apollo smiles and wiggles under the touch; hands are caked in cornmeal and meat and their size difference leaves Apollo with not much else than to say,
“Welcome home.”
It’s such a normal thing to say. Apollo’s said it many times before- but tonight’s the first time that Klavier realizes that this is his home.
It’s not Apollo’s key on his key ring, or that Klaiver didn’t have to announce that he was coming over; nor the place he’s standing in at that very moment. It’s this person, this beautiful human in his arms. Who loves Klavier in all his glimmerousness, whose passion matches Klavier’s own for law and life. This man who smiles at him when he comes through the door and asks him about Klavier’s day, who is cooking dinner for them as if it’s the most normal and expected thing in the world.
He feels warm and safe, and a mixture of so many things at once. That he is feeling them all at the same time confirms to him, that no matter where work or music takes him, his home and heart is here. With Apollo.
Klavier’s response is a deep kiss, and a happy sigh. Apollo flusters, squawks and calls him a “sap”, but Klavier can see he’s smiling and so he does it again.
“What’s gotten in to you?” Apollo breathless, and still covered in tamale mixture, “are you that happy that we’re having tamales for dinner.”
“Ja, it’s an appropriate response given that I am about to have the best in LA,” Klavier grins and enjoys Apollo’s blush.
“Well if you help me, you’ll be able to eat them sooner-”
Klavier smiles and leans over Apollo to wash his hands in the sink before pulling another apron out of the drawer. Apollo shifts to make room for him at the counter;pushes the bowl of tamale mixture between them for Klavier to access.
May I always have a place besides you, Liebling he thinks and they proceed to ask each other about their respective days at work as dinner is made.

Movin’ On - Chapter Fourteen: Year Four
Movin’ On - By JamieMac
Description: A relationship is made up of moments. Moments that span days and years, spaces of time. Y/N had been with Harrison Osterfield for 10 years, but after a horrific argument they break up. She finds herself reminiscing, about all the good times they had together and all of the bad times that they went though… she starts to see the pieces that fell - what she once thought was the perfect puzzle, every piece in its place, turned out to be a facade, one big jumbled up mess with nothing but patches in place of the missing pieces.

Harrison waited as the photographer changed over the set. As he waited, his fingers numbly scrolled through his Instagram feed. Photo after photo of Y/N and Tom kept flipping by and with each picture, the twinge of jealousy grew. Harrison didn’t understand why the feelings kept building, and he sure as hell did not understand where they came from in the first place. If it hadn’t been for Tom’s insistence, he never would have asked Y/N out in the first place. Tom had been cool with them being together from the very beginning. Tom had maintained his friendship with both of them, never once crossing any boundaries, never once giving a reason to doubt or mistrust. Harrison hated the way he was acting right now. He hated feeling the way that he felt but he couldn’t shake it. Ever since the Civil War premiere, he had been haunted by thoughts of Y/N and Tom together, together in ways that were far more than friendly. He’d tried to push the thoughts down, to push them away, but each time he saw the two of them together, their arms around one another, smiles plastered on their faces, the feelings came back with a ferocity. Harrison turned his phone off, tucking the device into his back pocket. He needed to clear his head, focus on the task at hand. Being friends with Tom had opened up so many doors for him, the opportunities piling on top of one another. He was beyond thankful, grateful that he had a friend as giving and generous as Tom was. Harrison stepped back into place, his body moving with the instructions given to him. He forced a smile onto his face, keeping still as the camera clicked over and over.
-
-
Harrison tossed his bag onto his bed, his eyes scanning the spacious room. He’d moved in with Tom a little over a year ago. The move had benefited both of them. Harrison kept on eye on things when he wasn’t traveling with Tom and it allowed for him to move out of his parents house. A win win, right? He rolled his eyes, crawling onto the plush mattress and sinking down into its comfort. He pulled the duvet up around him, his eyes drooping with exhaustion. He needed to just get over his pettiness, move on, realize that he was the only one in the wrong in this situation and stop it before it ate him to nothing. As he started to drift off, he heard the front door open and voices fill the empty space. One male and one female, both extremely familiar to him. He scrunched up his face, wondering why she was even here. She had class in the morning and had told him that she wouldn’t be able to stay the night. He couldn’t make out any words, but her laughter cut through him, searing his flesh. Tom’s voice rumbled out a response and Harrison extracted himself from his safe confines. He padded down the hallway, his body coming into view of his two friends.
“Hey baby,” Y/N gushed, approaching him.
He allowed her to lean into him, her lips attaching to his. He couldn’t help himself as he wrapped his arms around her body, pulling her flush to him. He mumbled a hello, losing himself in her soft embrace.
She pulled away, licking her lips as she smiled, “You weren’t sleeping were you?”
He shook his head, “I thought you couldn’t make it over tonight.”
“Originally I couldn’t, but my professor canceled my first class...so when Tom called to see if he needed to pick me up, I thought it would be nice to surprise you.”
He felt a grin appear on his face, “It’s a nice surprise. You could have called first.”
Her head tilted, “Okay.” She hesitated for a moment, her mouth opening and closing as if she wasn’t certain of her next move. “Are you okay Harrison, you seem a bit off tonight.”
He took a deep breath, scanning the faces of the two people standing before him, “I’m just tired is all.”
She studied him for a moment longer, knowing that he was lying to her. She took his hand in hers, holding it to her heart, “‘Let’s get you back to bed. Night Tom.”
Harrison allowed her to drag him back to his bedroom but he turned his head to glance at his friend. He couldn’t see Tom’s face, but his stance, the hold of his shoulders, shaking slightly with laughter, it all rubbed him the wrong way. Tom ran a hand through his curls, his profile coming into view, and the slight smirk that graced his lips, ignited the fire of jealousy that Harrison had been trying so hard to suppress.
-
-
He rolled over, his eyes blinking rapidly as they adjusted to the brightness of the room. As her side of the bed came into focus, a grumble of disappointment escaped his lips. A small white sheet of paper was perched on her pillow. He grasped it, her looping handwriting sprawled across the page.
Haz,
I’ll be back after my last class, shouldn’t be too late. When I get back let’s go and grab a bite to eat and catch a movie, spend some much needed time together.
XOXO Y/N
PS - You are so blasted adorable when you’re snoring. ;)
“I don’t snore,” He gwaffed, climbing out from beneath his warm covers. Noise from the kitchen echoed down to his bedroom and he shuffled down the hallway towards the sound. Tom stood, his back towards the rest of the house, standing on his toes rummaging through the cupboard above his head. His laptop was open on the counter, a picture of himself and Y/N stared back at Harrison. One of the many photos taken during the premiere. One of the many photos of them looking like a happy couple. The memories of that evening flooded Harrison’s mind, drowning all rational thought.
“Is there something going on between you and Y/N,” He blurted out.
Tom stopped moving, his head turning back to acknowledge his friend, “What did you just say mate?”
“You heard me,” Harrison couldn’t seem to stop the rage that was brewing.
“What are you on about? You know that there is nothing going on,” Tom turned around, fully facing his friend.
“But neither of you have discredited the photos,” Harrison leaned over the laptop, the screen illuminating his face.
Tom didn’t need to see the evidence to know exactly what Harrison was talking about. Tom hadn’t been pleased with all the press he and Y/N had been receiving lately but there wasn’t much he could do about it. He could deny the allegations, but he’d been told that a denial would only draw more unwarranted attention. He’d decided to take the route of ignorance, turning a blind eye and hoping that it would all die down just as quickly as it had been ignited. He also knew that something had been bothering Harrison lately, the source now coming to light. “Haz man, that’s all just the media talking. You know that it’s all just hype, that none of it is real. You were there.”
Harrison scanned Tom’s face. He knew that what his friend was saying was the truth, but he couldn’t explain why he still had a gnawing in his gut. He had convinced himself of one thing and it appeared that no matter what the facts were, he wasn’t going to believe them. “She isn’t yours mate and she never will be.”
Tom blinked in confusion, wondering where the hell all of this was coming from. He would never try and make a move on Y/N and Harrison knew that. “Harrison….”
“You have the success. You have the fame. You have the money. Fuck it man, you can have any woman that you want. You have everything that you want. Why do you have to have this too?” Harrison’s face flamed, the anger coursing through his veins. Any attempt to tamper the ire back down was met with harsh resistance.
“Dude,” Tom was at a loss. He had no idea that all of this had been swirling in Harrison’s mind. He had thought that everything was fine, that they were fine. He had made Harrison a part of his career, a part of his life. He wanted to share his success with the people he cared about and he was more than happy to keep Haz along for the ride. “You know that whatever I have, whatever success comes my way...that I’m happy to share it with you. What’s mine is yours man.” Tom bit his tongue, cringing as the words came out of his mouth.
Harrison clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white, “So that means that I have to share with you?”
“Whoa, whoa, that is not what I…”
“She chose me, the least you can do is let me have this one thing. I have nothing else that isn’t already yours.”
“I didn’t mean it that way, I swear. Look Harrison, I’m not sure where all of this is coming from, but it isn’t what you’re thinking.” Tom moved towards him but the taller man backed up.
“I’m gonna hit the gym. I’m not sure that I can stay here anymore,” Harrison turned his back, his shoulders slumping slightly.
Tom watched his friend disappear into the other room, confused as hell and scared that his best friend was making an irrationally stupid decision. He fought with the idea of telling Y/N what had just gone on but worried that it would only fuel the rage that was already out of control. He needed to allow Harrison to work this out on his own, so Tom decided to do the only thing that he could. He sighed in dejection. He picked up his laptop and walked towards his backdoor. Turning around and taking a quick glance back down the hall, his heart heavy as he cemented the fact that he needed to just back off, give Harrison the space that he was screaming for.

It's time for another preview! Below the cut you will find information on the different government systems found across Sol! As always, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to message us either through our blog or via our Discord server!
Earth
Many of the governments and countries of the 21st century still exist on some level, however, they lack the power and control over their citizens that they once had. Some countries have completely dissolved thanks to World War III decimating their lands.
After the war ended, there was a mass migration to the cities that remained standing, with stable and solid infrastructure in place. As a result of this, cities gradually became more and more at odds with their governments and eventually treaties were struck across the planet that would allow them to exist as autonomous city-states.
Each city-state elects an “Ambassador” that serves on a council of ambassadors from the other city-states around the planet that collectively make decisions for Earth. But in reality, they don’t have much control over the people. Instead, they deal mostly with the military, foreign policy, and dealing with extracting any criminals that are on the run from the other settlements. Which, unfortunately eats up much of their time and resources.
Since most Terrans don’t give a shit about the other settlements and their citizens, Ambassadors are mostly left alone and it’s an open secret that the Ambassadors are often corrupt and bribed with credits or gifts to sway decisions from people of power on the other settlements.
Day to day self governing within the city-states either works really well or is utter chaos, there often isn’t an in between. Thankfully everyone spends most of their energy trying to survive so war on Earth has practically stopped, aside from the occasional spat over the limited resources left.
Luna
Due to the fact Luna got its start through government funding from various Terran countries, Lunites were familiar with and most comfortable with a democratic republic when they finally gained their independence.
The six sectors came together and wrote a constitution that was largely inspired by Terran countries that were largely democratic as well. Once they had established and agreed upon the Constitution, the first Lunite elections were held and have been held every five years since then.
Luminary — Elected leader of a sector, they implement sector laws and are tasked with revising or establishing new laws in their respective sector. Any emergencies that happen within the sector is also their responsibility.
Ataraxia — An elected representative for a sector that’s sent to Concordia to help create and maintain federal policies. Each sector has five Ataraxia seats.
Supra — The senior most Ataraxia.
Court of Summa — Comprised of seven summas who have been nominated by a Supra and have been approved by the majority of Ataraxia.
Each sector has established a different city within their borders to be the main hub of governance while shortly after winning independence from Earth, a larger city was built outside sector borders and named Concordia. This is where all federal governance is done.
Mars
While on paper, Mars is also a “democratic” settlement, it is well known among Sol that they are in fact an Oligarchy, where the wealthiest families are the ones who pull the strings in the government. Politicians are essentially hired by these wealthy families who own all the corporations on Mars to ensure their interests are put first.
To become an elected official, each candidate must have been a resident of Mars for at least ten years and be at least 40 years old.
Each province elects two chancellors every six years through popular vote, and the candidates cannot serve more than three terms. Chancellors are responsible for enforcing and adapting the laws of Mars. Each new chancellor is responsible for hiring their own staff, and there are no ‘rollover’ employees from chancellor to chancellor. As a result, many chancellor’s keep the same staff with them as they move up through the ranks.
Working in tandem with the eighteen chancellors, are the thirty-six emissaries (four for each province) who are the ones who write laws and present them to the chancellors for final approval before they are placed on the Premier’s desk for signature.
An Emissary is elected every three years and they are notorious for retaining their seats for decades as they have no term limits. This allows the Martian corporations to pull strings most effectively.
Meanwhile a Premier may only serve one term of ten years and is the political figure head of the government with a fair amount of power. Premiers are often Chancellors who are ready to take the next step in their political careers. They are determined through popular vote, though certain provinces that have had resistance groups pop up pass restrictive voting laws that allow the status quo to remain intact.
United Stations
Of all the settlements, the United Stations have the most unique approach to governing. While they are united in many ways (such as sharing goods, freedom of movement between each station, etc.) each station has taken different approaches to the structure of their individual governments. This tends to confuse those who are not born Stationers or have yet to visit any of the stations themselves, because the four stations are united, but united in allowing almost complete independence for each station.
There is a Council of Four (previously called the Council of Five) that is composed of the leaders of each station and they make the decisions that will affect all four stations and their citizens.
The current council members are:
Open (Hermes Station)
Open (Apollo Station)
Open (Hera Station)
Open (Demeter Station)
When it comes to certain matters (such as war, catastrophic damage to a station, etc.) the Council of Four will step in and take complete control of all stations to ensure the outcome leads to as little loss of life as possible.
Outside these situations, the Council of Four merely keep each other apprised of their station’s status and if they will need assistance from one of the other stations for anything in particular.
The current governmental structures of each station are:
Demeter (Meritocracy) — The economic goods and political power are vested in individual people on the basis of talent, effort, and achievement, rather than wealth or social class. Since Demeter produces the necessary food for the stations, they deemed it important that the individuals who are responsible for the agriculture have the power to ensure things remain uncorrupted to ensure that no Stationer is forced to go hungry because of their social class.
Hera (Absolute Monarchy) — The monarch of Hera wasn’t appointed by God as was done centuries upon centuries ago on Earth. Instead, the family that emerged as monarchs simply were beloved by the majority of Herans. They have remained in power largely due to how active they are in the day to day life of the Stationers who live on Hera station. There is also a court of influential families, mostly those who have roots in fashion and design.
Hermes (Direct Democracy) — Those of Hermes firmly believed in the power of democracy but were wary of representative democracies, and ultimately decided to cut out representatives all together. Instead, residents of Hermes have a more direct influence and voice when it comes to making decisions that will affect themselves and the rest of the residents. It is mandatory for Stationers on Hera above the age of twenty to participate in voting for new legislation, failure to do so will result in a fine and possible jail time.
Apollo (Demarchy) — Composed of several decision-making groups who are tasked with certain areas/functions of government (such as transportation, housing, healthcare, etc.) The members that make up each group are chosen randomly every year from eligible residents over the age of thirty years old with no criminal record. Each new member is rigorously trained by the previous member before the hand off is cemented.
Poseidon (Anarchy) — Before Poseidon was lost, they operated on the basis of great mistrust of authority and consolidated power. Many Stationers believe this strongly contributed to the loss of the station a decade ago.
Europa and Enceladus
Europa and Enceladus are autonomous regions to Luna and Mars respectively.
On Europa, citizens will vote for their Luminary who oversees the daily operation and needs of the settlement. Unlike the other sectors found on Luna itself, Europa can only elect one Ataraxia to represent them in federal manners.
On Enceladus, citizens “vote” for their two chancellors to represent them on Mars. The two Chancellors appoint an Overseer to ensure that the voices of Enceladites are heard. Similar to Europa, instead of four emissaries they are allotted one to send to Mars. Most citizens of Enceladus know that it’s all a farce and Mars appoints whoever can keep a firm grip on them.

[ NADIA HILKER, CIS FEMALE, SHE/HER, 30 ] Whenever I hear GOLD JACKET, GREEN JACKET… by SENSES FAIL it always makes me think of LENA BECKER. They have been so PROGRESSIVE & TOUGH, but occasionally they have gotten a little bit DISRUPTIVE & UNYIELDING through the years. They currently work as an ETHICAL HACKER, a strangely fitting job for someone with loyalty to THE 19TH as an ADVISOR. A PUNCH NAZI’S PATCH COVERING THE ELBOW OF A LEATHER JACKET, WILD HAIR BLOWING IN THE DESERT WIND & SCREAMING FOR CHANGE make them easy to spot on the strip.
INFORMATION DEALER (THE 19TH, HACKER) After Lena passed this tier of the hierarchy, she was able to help hand pick her replacement. While they are someone that shares her passion for all things technological, there is still some discourse there. Occasionally, Lena can be found following behind them to make sure that the group is protected, which can and will be a point of contention for them. Additionally, there may be some reason that she discovered/discovers that her seeming lack of trust comes from something a little more than a fleeting feeling or added layer of protection.
LAW ENFORCEMENT (CYBER CRIMES) Since Lena was charged with her first crime, the cyber crimes unit of the FBI as well as other government agencies have tried to sway her loyalty in their direction. They have offered her any and everything that they can for even a glimpse at her talent, but she refuses. She isn’t sure if it’s just because a general mistrust or disbelief of the government itself, or something more. This connection has been particularly persistent in trying to get her to join forces with them, citing her “good intentions” would be able to make more noise if they were on the same team. Their relationship has grown throughout the years, and while the offers have started to slow down, neither of them really know what has happened between them. It’s hard to say why they stick around, even if both do agree on clinging tightly to the notion that it is solely for the gain of the corrupt organization that they represent.
UNAFFILIATED (POSSIBLE RECRUIT/OUTSIDE SOURCE) As mentioned in the below biography. Lena has enlisted or managed to charm several other colleagues into assistance when she may have needed it. Ideally, this would be the person who first helped her out when she was charged, or during that entire time period to absolve both her and her mother of the suspicion that they faced. Up until recently, they have been a faceless representation of a person, communicating through encrypted channels, texts exchanged through burner phones that seem to change every two weeks, or other secured means of communication. She’s not sure she even knows what they look like, or could find them if she tries. To her surprise, they eventually show up in Paradise, but the why behind that is up for debate. (This could be to protect Lena from something she doesn’t even know is coming, some sort of intimate bond with her that has been established through their communication but never really acted upon, or because her dedication to the 19th has convinced them to join her favorite cause, and that’s just me speed balling some suggestions).
While her hands are not often dirtied physically, she is not without the ability or understanding of violence. Lena is very big on responsibility and accountability, and because of this, she tracks her own destruction in small, seemingly silent ways. Her hands are inked with tiny markers of each life she has taken, or contributed to taken. The largest marker is the one that is a very hard to discern shape of her mothers initials, a very physical representation of the guilt she feels for her mothers death: even if it is still officially listed as an accident.
While information dealer seems like it would have been a better fit for Lena, she aspired to be more. One of the things that made the rest of the group understand this, is her position as not only advisor, but the function of a sort of “group therapist”. Many of the members come to her for advice, their problems always collecting on her shoulders because she has done the work to make sure that she can carry them. Additionally, Lena is extremely educated in many things, which helps her provide possible outcomes, a different view, and a devils advocate sort of mentality to both organizational and personal problems.
Raised by her immigrant parents in Law Vegas proper, Lena Becker experienced life in a way that seemed painfully normal for the first few years. It wasn’t until her mother started getting involved that she became a child of the revolution. It was the admiration for her mother that she was inspired by, and by the time she was handed her first computer, there was no question that she intended to use it to change the world. Her first recorded offensive was getting caught hacking into the Vegas PD database to alter her mothers arrest records, which were threatening to deport her at the time. Thanks for a few more well versed friends in the area, she was able to complete the task with a little bit of outside help, and lessen her own charges, unable to make most of the evidence stick around long enough to actually press forward with the case for both mother and child.
This put Lena on the radar for many agencies, considering her age at the time, and her so called honorable intentions behind the offense. The problem was, she never had any intention to apologize, or make amends for what she had done. Instead, Lena stood on her beliefs and doubled down, something that worried both agents and her father alike. Unable to stand the heat in the kitchen they had created, he left on her eighteenth birthday. She keeps track of him, sometimes chalking it up to a misplaced sort of nostalgia, and others to remind herself where cowardice will take you. To this day, she still sends an anonymous birthday present to him every year, usually something with a Judas reference, which is the only thing she calls him after what she sees as betrayal in his abandonment.
She became a professional ethical hacker for several well paying groups as she grew in both skill and name, and moved to Paradise with her mother in her twenties. She was recruited by the 19th shortly after what felt like her thousandth denial of offers from multiple law enforcement agencies. The organization is still her priority, and continues to define her loyalty. After losing her mother to an accident that she still believes was designed to silence her voice, it became a pet project to follow that mystery down every rabbit hole until she found an answer that felt even remotely believable. During this loss, her bond with the group solidified, leaning heavily on them in her time of mourning, even if she never did learn how to process emotion quite correctly. That being said though, that was also the time they’d given her the chance to defend herself, spending ample time with the trainer until she became a physical force to reckon with as well as a more low key one.
After her training was complete, she began to climb the ranks a little more confidently, knowing that she could protect herself from the dangers that status came with. Advisor is and was a role that suited her perfectly, giving her the chance to lend her voice to those who didn’t have one and offer her experience as lesson.
LENA IS CURRENTLY CLOSED & WRITTEN BY LACE.

• A cold blast hit him and he laughed at the sting as he stepped outside, surveyed the night sky, and drank deeply. Such a good liar he was. Such a good one. Everyone thought he was fine because he’d camo’d his little problems. He wore a Sox hat to hide the eye twitch. Set his wristwatch to go off every half hour to beat back the dream. Ate though he wasn’t angry. Laughed though he found nothing funny. And he’d always smoked like a chimney. – J.R. Ward • A factory can be closed down, its chimneys smokeless, waiting for the worker to come back to his job, and all will be peaceful. But the moment workers are imported, and the striker sees his own place usurped, there is bound to be trouble. – Charles M. Schwab • A legal broom’s a moral chimney-sweeper, And that’s the reason he himself’s so dirty – Lord Byron • A Mocking Bird regularly resorts to the south angle of a chimney top and salutes us with sweetest notes from the rising of the moon until about midnight. – John James Audubon • A picture without sky has no glory. This present, unless we see gleaming beyond it the eternal calm of the heavens, above the tossing tree tops with withering leaves, and the smoky chimneys, is a poor thing for our eyes to gaze at, or our hearts to love, or our hands to toil on. – Alexander MacLaren • Accurately recalling an entire day of fishing is like trying to push smoke back down a chimney, so you settle on these specific moments. – John Gierach • And further, I tell you that the Jew is right, when he acts as he does – because we are too timid to be as German as the Jew is Jewish! … It happened at the time of the [Bavarian] Soviet Republic: When the unleashed subhumans rambled murdering through the streets, the deputies hid behind a chimney in the Bavarian parliament. – Julius Streicher • And so there would always be more to remember that could no longer be seen…our history is always returning to a little patch of weeds and saplings with an old chimney sticking up by itself…and here I look ahead to the resting of my case: I love the house that belonged to the chimney, holding it bright in memory, and love the saplings and the weeds. – Wendell Berry • And what is more melancholy than the old apple-trees that linger about the spot where once stood a homestead, but where there is now only a ruined chimney rising our of a grassy and weed-grown cellar? They offer their fruit to every wayfarer–apples that are bitter-sweet with the moral of times vicissitude. – Nathaniel Hawthorne • Anyone who is not an anarchist agrees with having a policeman at the corner of the street; but the danger at present is that of finding the policeman half-way down the chimney or even under the bed. – Gilbert K. Chesterton • As artists and traders in medieval cities began to form organizations, they instituted tough initiation ceremonies. Journeymen in Bergen, Norway, were shoved down a chimney, thrown three times into the sea, and soundly whipped. Such rites made belonging to the guild or corporation more precious to those who were accepted, and survived. – Isaac Asimov • As for me, I rarely write a song. But when I do write a song, like “Ain’t No Chimneys in the Projects,” which came to me at three a.m. one morning, on a whim – I get a percentage. • At present I am using a good sized bedroom in the 2 bedroom house here as a studio, and it is large enough to step back from my canvases, and has a good north light. It should serve very well until I can afford to have the storeroom half of the back building lined and insulated and a chimney put in. That may be in about two years. – E. J. Hughes

When my brother, the crazy chicken warrior, turned into a falcon and went up the pyramid’s chimney with his new friend, the fruit bat, he left me playing nurse to two very wounded people—which I didn’t appreciate, and which I wasn’t particularly good at. – Rick Riordan • Been having a fight with your blankets, Septimus?” A familiar voice echoed down the chimney. “Looks like you lost,” the voice continued with a chuckle. “Not wise to take on a pair of blankets, lad. One, maybe, but two blankets always gang up on you. Vicious things, blankets. – Angie Sage • Brands were a by-product of having great products and communicating them well to people. Power stations that generate a lot of electricity probably have a lot of steam coming out of the chimneys. That doesn’t mean to say that the engineers stand around working out how to make more steam. – Hans Snook
[clickbank-storefront-bestselling] • Christmas Pie Lo! now is come our joyfull’st feast! Let every man be jolly; Each room with ivy leaves is dressed, And every post with holly. Now all our neighbours’ chimneys smoke, And Christmas blocks are burning; Their ovens they with bakemeats choke, And all their spits are turning. Without the door let sorrow lie, And if for cold it hap to die, We’ll bury it in a Christmas pie, And ever more be merry. – George Wither • Even the pictures I was doing at college – a little narrative based on a butterfly catcher, or a chimney sweep – the images were always telling stories. They were all scenarios and moods which I storyboarded and worked through – it’s exactly what I do now. – Tim Walker • Every head turned to see two more security guards appear, each holding a Bagshaw by the back of the neck (which might have been considerably less conspicuous had the Bagshaws not been dressed as chimney sweeps). Kat turned back to Hale. ‘The Mary Poppins?’ ‘Seemed like a good idea at the time. – Ally Carter • Every year, dads will dress up as Santa and try to surprise their kids by coming down the chimney, and every year, a dad gets stuck and dies. -Kyle Dunnigan • Fear no more the heat o’ th’ sun Nor the furious winters’ rages; Thou thy worldly task hast done, Home art gone, and ta’en thy wages. Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust. – William Shakespeare • From whence it happens, that they which trust to books, do as they that cast up many little sums into a greater, without considering whether those little sums were rightly cast up or not; and at last finding the error visible, and not mistrusting their first grounds, know not which way to clear themselves; but spend time in fluttering over their books, as birds that entering by the chimney, and finding themselves enclosed in a chamber, flutter at the false light of a glass window, for want of wit to consider which way they came in. – Thomas Hobbes • Gain may be temporary and uncertain; but ever while you live, expense is constant and certain: and it is easier to build two chimneys than to keep one in fuel. – Benjamin Franklin • Golden lads and girls all must as chimney sweepers come to dust. – William Shakespeare • Halfway down a by-street of one of our New England towns stands a rusty wooden house, with seven acutely peaked gables, facing towards various points of the compass, and a huge, clustered chimney in the midst. The street is Pyncheon Street; the house is the old Pyncheon House; and an elm-tree, of wide circumference, rooted before the door, is familiar to every town-born child by the title of the Pyncheon Elm. – Nathaniel Hawthorne • Have you noticed how nobody ever looks up? Nobody looks at chimneys, or trees against the sky, or the tops of buildings. Everybody just looks down at the pavement or their shoes. The whole world could pass them by and most people wouldn’t notice. – Julie Andrews • He describes it as a large apartment, with a red brick floor and a capacious chimney; the ceiling garnished with hams, sides of bacon, and ropes of onions. – Charles Dickens • I am Envy, begotten of a chimney-sweeper and an oyster-wife. I cannot read, and therefore wish all books were burnt; I am lean with seeing others eat – O that there would come a famine through all the world, that all might die, and I live alone; then thou should’st see how fat I would be! But must thou sit and I stand? Come down, with a vengeance! – Christopher Marlowe • I got a flue shot and now my chimney works perfectly. – Steve Martin • I have discovered the secret of happiness – it is work, either with the hands or the head. The moment I have something to do, the draughts are open and my chimney draws, and I am happy. – John Burroughs • I have never felt like I was creating anything. For me, writing is like walking through a desert and all at once, poking up through the hardpan, I see the top of a chimney. I know there’s a house under there, and I’m pretty sure that I can dig it up if I want. That’s how I feel. It’s like the stories are already there. What they pay me for is the leap of faith that says: ‘If I sit down and do this, everything will come out okay.’ – Stephen King • I reveled in the smallness, the coziness of an upstairs bedroom in a traditional American Cape Cod house the half-floor that forces you to duck, to feel small and naive again, ready for anything, dying for love, your body a chimney filled with odd, black smoke. These square, squat, awkward rooms are like a fifty-square-foot paean to teenage-hood, to ripeness, to the first and last taste of youth. – Gary Shteyngart • I wander thro’ each charter’d street, Near where the charter’d Thames does flow, And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of woe. In every cry of every Man, In every Infant’s cry of fear, In every voice, in every ban, The mind-forg’d manacles I hear. How the Chimney-sweeper’s cry Every black’ning Church appalls; And the hapless Soldier’s sigh Runs in blood down Palace walls. But most thro’ midnight streets I hear How the youthful Harlot’s curse Blasts the new born Infant’s tear, And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse. – William Blake • I was lookin’ high an’ low for them Reds everywhere, I was lookin’ in the sink an’ underneath the chair. I looked way up my chimney hole, I even looked deep inside my toilet bowl. – Bob Dylan • I wish we could grow up about it, I’m sure we are contributing to global warming, and we must do all we can to reduce that, but our climate has always changed. The Romans had vineyards in Yorkshire. We’re all on this bandwagon of ‘Ban the 4×4 in Fulham’. Why didn’t we have global warming during the Industrial Revolution? In those days you couldn’t have seen across the street for all the carbon emissions and the crap coming out of the chimneys. – Alan Titchmarsh • I’d like to start with the chimney jokes – I’ve got a stack of them. The first one is on the house. – Tim Vine • If a man will kick a fact out of the window, when he comes back he finds it again in the chimney corner. – Ralph Waldo Emerson • If SANTA CLAUS came down the chimney in a f**king jogging suit, you wouldn’t even know it was him. – Wayne Coyne • If you cannot avoid a quarrel with a blackguard, let your lawyer manage it, rather than yourself. No man sweeps his own chimney, but employs a chimney-sweeper, who has no objection to dirty work, because it is his trade. – Charles Caleb Colton • If you really think there’s a Santa, why don’t you sit on the front steps all night in the freezing cold and see if he climbs down any chimneys tonight. Good luck. And since we’re a family that isn’t lucky enough to have a chimney, how would Santa get into our house? Does he bring a locksmith with him? And it probably would have to be a Jewish locksmith, because a Christian locksmith is going to want to be home with his family. And how many Jewish locksmiths are there? None. – Lewis Black • I’m not an author, I’m a writer, that’s all I am. Authors want their names down in history; I want to keep the smoke coming out of the chimney. – Mickey Spillane • In winter we lead a more inward life. Our hearts are warm and cheery, like cottages under drifts, whose windows and doors are halfconcealed, but from whose chimneys the smoke cheerfully ascends…. We enjoy now, not an Oriental, but a Boreal leisure, around warm stoves and fireplaces, and watch the shadow of motes in the sunbeams. – Henry David Thoreau • Infectious disease is one of the few genuine adventures left in the world. The dragons are all dead and the lance grows rusty in the chimney corner. … About the only sporting proposition that remains unimpaired by the relentless domestication of a once free-living human species is the war against those ferocious little fellow creatures, which lurk in dark corners and stalk us in the bodies of rats, mice and all kinds of domestic animals; which fly and crawl with the insects, and waylay us in our food and drink and even in our love – Hans Zinsser • Is Adrian here?” “Who?” “Adrian. Tall. Brown hair. Green eyes.” She frowned. “Do you mean Jet?” “I … I’m not sure. Does he smoke like a chimney?” The girl nodded sagely. “Yup. You must mean Jet. – Richelle Mead • It is easier to build two chimneys than to keep one in fuel. – Benjamin Franklin • It is far more probable that our senses should deceive us, than that an old woman should be carried up a chimney on a broom stick; and that it is far less astonishing that witnesses should lie, than that witches should perform the acts that were alleged. – Michel de Montaigne • It is this refrain that we hear repeated by everyone: you are not at home, this is not a sanatorium, the only exit is by way of the Chimney. (What did it mean? Soon we were all to learn what it meant.) – Primo Levi • Its tall chimneys throw up black smoke, impregnating everything with soot, and the miners’ faces as they traveled the streets were also imbued with that ancient melancholy of smoke, unifying everything with its grayish monotones, a perfect coupling with the gray mountain days. – Che Guevara • It’s understandable that people are keeping one eye on the pot and another up the chimney. – Kevin Keegan • Let now the chimneys blaze And cups o’erflow with wine… The summer hath his joys, And winter his delights; Though love and all his pleasures are but toys, They shorten tedious nights. – Thomas Campion • Let now the chimneys blaze And cups o’erflow with wine; Let well-tuned words amaze With harmony divine. – Thomas Campion • Make the doors upon a woman’s wit, and it will out at the casement; shut that, and ’twill out at the key-hole; stop that, ’twill fly with the smoke out at the chimney. – William Shakespeare • Maybe that whole love thing is just a grown-up version of Santa Claus; just a myth we’ve been fed since childhood. So, we keep buying magazines, joining clubs, and doing therapy and watching movies with hit pop songs played over love montages all in a pathetic attempt to explain why our love Santa keeps getting caught in the chimney. – Meg Ryan • Morality has in the past made progress when we broadened the category of things we weren’t permitted to harm (animals, ‘infidels’); saw through some delusions and rationalisations about what harms are good for people themselves (prison punishment, hysterectomies for unhappy 1950s wives); and readjusted our for-the-good of others criteria so as to demand only reasonable sacrifices (ceasing to use children as handy chimney sweeps). – Catherine Wilson • Most religion-mongers have bated their paradises with a bit of toasted cheese. They have tempted the body with large promises of possessions in their transmortal El Dorado. Sancho Panza will not quit his chimney-corner, but under promise of imaginary islands to govern. – James Russell Lowell • My gripe is not with lovers of the truth but with truth herself. What succor, what consolation is there in truth, compared to a story? What good is truth, at midnight, in the dark, when the wind is roaring like a bear in the chimney? When the lightning strikes shadows on the bedroom wall and the rain taps at the window with its long fingernails? No. When fear and cold make a statue of you in your bed, don’t expect hard-boned and fleshless truth to come running to your aid. What you need are the plump comforts of a story. The soothing, rocking safety of a lie. – Diane Setterfield • My neighbor’s not even listening to me. He’s all excited about some garden hose he bought at Brookstone. He’s convinced it was designed by NASA. “Actually, it’s got two nozzles, one for the hot and one for the…” Really? Is it long enough to go around both our necks and the chimney so we can tandem jump off of this? That’s all I really care about you and your little garden hose. – Bill Burr • My once-keen analytical mind has become so dulled by endless hours of baking in the hot sun, thrashing about in tight chimneys, pulling at impossibly heavy loads, freezing my ass off…. so that now my mental state is comparable to that of a Peruvian Indian, well stoked on coca leaves. – Warren G. Harding • Nick, fetch my car, fetch my clothes, sweep the chimney, make my bed, watch my psychopath, fetch my slippers.’ Yeah, I’ll fetch those slippers and stick them someplace real uncomfortable. I swear, my mother should have named me Fido. (Nick) – Sherrilyn Kenyon • Nick, fetch my car, fetch my clothes, sweep the chimney, make my bed, watch my psychopath, fetch my slippers. – Sherrilyn Kenyon • No amount of rationalisation, reform, or Freudian analysis can quite annul the thrill of the chimney-corner whisper or the lonely wood. – H. P. Lovecraft • No; we have been as usual asking the wrong question. It does not matter a hoot what the mockingbird on the chimney is singing. The real and proper question is: Why is it beautiful? – Bertrand Russell • Non- Euclidean calculus and quantum physics are enough to stretch any brain; and when one mixes them with folklore, and tries to trace a strange background of multi-dimensional reality behind the ghoulish hints of Gothic tales and the wild whispers of the chimney-corner, one can hardly expect to be wholly free from mental tension. (Dreams In The Witch-House) – H. P. Lovecraft • Now I am old-fashioned. A woman, I consider, should be womanly. I have no patience with the modern neurotic girl who jazzes from morning to night, smokes like a chimney, and uses language which would make a billingsgate fishwoman blush! – Agatha Christie • Of all the ruinous and desolate places my uncle had ever beheld, this was the most so. It looked as if it had once been a large house of entertainment; but the roof had fallen in, in many places, and the stairs were steep, rugged, and broken. There was a huge fire-place in the room into which they walked, and the chimney was blackened with smoke; but no warm blaze lighted it up now. The white feathery dust of burnt wood was still strewed over the hearth, but the stove was cold, and all was dark and gloomy. – Charles Dickens • One day the wind blew through the town, and oh, how merry it was! It whistled down the chimneys, and scampered round the corners, and sang in the tree tops. “Come and dance, come and dance, come and dance with me,” that is what it seemed to say. – Maud Lindsay • One may have a blazing hearth in one’s soul and yet no one ever came to sit by it. Passers-by see only a wisp of smoke from the chimney and continue on their way. – Vincent Van Gogh • One sparrow is worth a thousand gulls, When it sings. The gull sits on chimney-tops. He mocks the guinea, challenges The crow, inciting various modes. The sparrow requites one, without intent. – Wallace Stevens • Our secret thoughts – do they ever show up? The small flame of our soul can be burning hot, but no one comes to its warmth. Passersby see only a small whiff going through the chimney. Don’t we need to take care of that flame, cherish it and patiently wait until someone will come and sit at it, do we? – Irving Stone • P.S. If it’s not a secret, will you tell me how you got my dollhouse inside our living room last Christmas? I know its too big to fit down the chimney. I measured. – Joanne Fluke • Praise the invisible sun burning beyond the white cold sky, giving us light and the chimney’s shadow. – Denise Levertov • She finds tales everywhere, in grains of sand she picks up from the garden, in puffs of smoke that drift out from the chimneys of the village, in fragments of smooth timber or glass in the jetsam. She will ask them, “Where did you come from? How did you get here?” And they will answer her in voices very like her own, but with new lilts and squeaks and splashes in them that show they are their own. – David Almond • She grew more and more silent about what really mattered. She curled inside herself like one of those black chimney brushes, the little shellfish you see on the beach, and you touch them, and then go inside and don’t come out. – Janet Frame • She’d become a governess. It was one of the few jobs a known lady could do. And she’d taken to it well. She’d sworn that if she did indeed ever find herself dancing on rooftops with chimney sweeps she’d beat herself to death with her own umbrella. – Terry Pratchett • Silkes and Satins put out the fire in the chimney. – George Herbert • Sitting by the chimney corner as we grow old, the commonest things around us take on live meanings and hint at the difference between these driving times and the calm, slow moving days when we were young. – Rebecca Harding Davis • Smell and taste are in fact but a single composite sense, whose laboratory is the mouth and its chimney the nose. – Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin • Smoke like a chimney, work like a horse, eat without thinking, go for a walk only in really pleasant company. – Albert Einstein • Snowstorms may yet whiten fields and gardens, high winds may howl about the trees and chimneys, but the little blue heralds persistently proclaim from the orchard and the garden that the spring procession has begun to move. – Neltje Blanchan • Soldiers in peace are like chimneys in summer. – William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley • Some burn damp faggots, others may consume The entire combustible world in one small room As though dried straw, and if we turn about The bare chimney is gone black out Because the work had finished in that flare. – William Butler Yeats • Some critics are like chimney-sweepers; they put out the fire below, and frighten the swallows from their nests above; they scrape a long time in the chimney, cover themselves with soot, and bring nothing away but a bag of cinders, and then sing from the top of the house as if they had built it. – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow • Someday I’ll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds Are far behind me Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops that’s where you’ll find me – Eva Cassidy • Sometimes, looking up at Sophiatown… I have felt I was looking at an Italian village somewhere in Umbria. For you do ‘look up’ at Sophiatown, and in the evening light, across the blue-grey haze of smoke from braziers and chimneys, against a saffron sky, you see close-packed, red-roofed little houses. …And above it all you see the Church of Christ the King, its tower visible north, south, east, and west. – Trevor Huddleston • Souldiers in peace are like chimneys in summer. – George Herbert • Such Roots as are soft, your best way is to dry in the Sun, or else hang them up in the Chimney corner upon a string; as for such as are hard you may dry them any where. – Nicholas Culpeper • The American Petroleum Institute filed suit against the EPA [and] charged that the agency was suppressing a scientific study for fear it might be misinterpreted… The suppressed study reveals that 80 percent of air pollution comes not from chimneys and auto exhaust pipes, but from plants and trees. – Ronald Reagan • The best way that a man could test his readiness to encounter the common variety of mankind would be to climb down a chimney into any house at random, and get on as well as possible with the people inside. And that is essentially what each one of us did on the day that he was born. – Gilbert K. Chesterton • The chimney is to some extent an independent structure, standing on the ground, and rising through the house to the heavens; evenafter the house is burned it still stands sometimes, and its importance and independence are apparent. – Henry David Thoreau • The city itself swung slowly toward us silent as a dream. No sign of life but puffs of steam from skyscraper chimneys, the motion of the traffic. The mighty towers stood like tombstones in a graveyard, leaning against the sky and waiting for — for what? Someday we’ll know. – Edward Abbey • The city was asleep on its right side and shaking with violent nightmares. Long puffs of snoring came out of the chimneys. Its feet were sticking out because the clouds did not cover it altogether. There was a hole in them and the white feathers were falling out. The city had untied all its bridges like so many buttons to feel at ease. Wherever there was a lamplight the city scratched itself until it went out. – Anais Nin • The clouds were flying fast, the wind was coming up in gusts, banging some neighboring shutters that had broken loose, twirling the rusty chimney-cowls and weathercocks, and rushing round and round a confined adjacent churchyard as if it had a mind to blow the dead citizens out of their graves. The low thunder, muttering in all quarters of the sky at once, seemed to threaten vengeance for this attempted desecration, and to mutter, “Let them rest! Let them rest! – Charles Dickens • The experienced illustrator subscribes to the principle of the application of the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair. Should inspiration whisk down your chimney, be at your table. The first ten thousand drawings are the hardest. Put another way, you have ten thousand bad drawings within and should expel them as quickly as possible. – Wallace Tripp • The Gingerbread House has four walls, a roof, a door, a window, and a chimney. It is decorated with many sweet culinary delights on the outside. But on the inside there is nothing-only the bare gingerbread walls. It is not a real house-not until you decide to add a Gingerbread Room. That’s when the stories can move in.They will stay in residence for as long as you abstain from taking the first gingerbread bite. – Vera Nazarian • The image by Barry Blitt of Barack Obama and Michelle in the White House with him dressed as a terrorist, her dressed as an Angela Davis character, a flag burning in the chimney, a portrait of Bin Laden on the wall is an image I’m extremely proud of. – Francoise Mouly • The nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired. Only after death, only in solitude, does a man’s true nature emerge. In death, as on the chimney sweep’s Saturday night, the soot gets washed from his body. • The rain and hail pattered against the glass; the chimneys quaked and rocked; the crazy casement rattled with the wind, as though an impatient hand inside were striving to burst it open. But no hand was there, and it opened no more. – Charles Dickens • The real and proper question is: why is it beautiful? – Annie Dillard • The sky was dark and gloomy, the air was damp and raw, the streets were wet and sloppy. The smoke hung sluggishly above the chimney-tops as if it lacked the courage to rise, and the rain came slowly and doggedly down, as if it had not even the spirit to pour. – Charles Dickens • The south-wind strengthens to a gale, / Across the moon the clouds fly fast, / The house is smitten as with a flail, / The chimney shudders to the blast. – Robert Bridges • The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. – Clement Clarke Moore • The thing to remember about love affairs,” says Simone, “is that they are all like having raccoons in your chimney.” … We have raccoons sometimes in our chimney,” explains Simone. And once we tried to smoke them out. We lit a fire, knowing they were there, but we hoped the smoke would cause them to scurry out the top and never come back. Instead, they caught on fire and came crashing down into our living room, all charred and in flames and running madly around until they dropped dead.” Simone swallows some wine. “Love affairs are like that,” she says. “They are all like that. – Lorrie Moore • The things I believed in dont exist any more. It’s foolish to pretend that they do. Western Civilization finally went up in smoke in the chimneys at Dachau but I was too infatuated to see it. I see it now. – Cormac McCarthy • The wind outside nested in each tree, prowled the sidewalks in invisible treads like unseen cats. Tom Skelton shivered. Anyone could see that the wind was a special wind this night, and the darkness took on a special feel because it was All Hallows’ Eve. Everything seemed cut from soft black velvet or gold or orange velvet. Smoke panted up out of a thousand chimneys like the plumes of funeral parades. From kitchen windows drifted two pumpkin smells: gourds being cut, pies being baked. – Ray Bradbury • The winter evening settles down With smell of steaks in passageways. Six o’clock. The burnt-out ends of smoky days. And now a gusty shower wraps The grimy scraps Of withered leaves about your feet And newspapers from vacant lots; The showers beat On broken blinds and chimney-pots, And at the corner of the street A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps. And then the lighting of the lamps. – T. S. Eliot • The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap And seeing that it was a soft October night Curled once about the house, and fell asleep – T. S. Eliot • Their bodies will be raised from the dead as vessels for the soul-vessels of wrath. The soul will breathe hell-fire, and smoke and coal will seem to hang upon its burning lips, yea the face, eyes, and ears will seem to be chimneys and vents for the flame, and the smoke of the burning , which God, by His breath, hath kindled therein, and upon, them, which will be held one in another, to the great torment and distress of each other. – John Bunyan • Their houses are all built in the shape of tents, with very high chimneys. – Christopher Columbus • There did he sit shrivelled in his chimney corner, fretting on account of his weak legs, world weary, will weary, and one day he suffocated through his excessive pity. – Friedrich Nietzsche • There is in every American, I think, something of the old Daniel Boone – who, when he could see the smoke from another chimney, felt himself too crowded and moved further out into the wilderness. – Hubert H. Humphrey • There’s no way the new chimney will fall down, Lu. Not with you in charge. It wouldn’t dare. – Angie Sage • This is a valley of ashes–a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. Occasionally a line of gray cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak, and comes to rest, and immediately the ash-gray men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud, which screens their obscure operations from your sight. – F. Scott Fitzgerald • Tis easier to build two chimneys, then to maintaine one. – George Herbert • To thousands of elder women in the late sixties and early seventies [the private women’s club movement] came like a new gospel ofactivity and service. They had reared their children and seen them take flight; moreover, they had fought through the war, their hearts in the field, their fingers plying needle and thread. They had been active in committees and commissions, the country over; had learned to work with and beside men, finding joy and companionship and inspiration in such work. How could they go back to the chimney-corner life of the fifties? – Laura E. Richards • Too much! Wait till you have lived here longer. Look down the valley! See the cloud of a hundred chimneys that overshadows it! I tell you that the cloud of murder hangs thicker and lower than that over the heads of the people. It is the Valley of Fear, the Valley of Death. The terror is in the hearts of the people from the dusk to the dawn. Wait, young man, and you will learn for yourself. – Arthur Conan Doyle • Two bones fell down my chimney and into the bedroom this morning. Hysterical thing to happen to a thriller writer. Murderous ravens perhaps? – Tobsha Learner • Walking the streets on winter nights kept him warm, despite the cold nocturnal passions of uprising winds. His footsteps led between trade-marked houses, two up and two down, with digital chimneys like pigs’ tits on the rooftops sending up heat and smoke into the cold trough of a windy sky. Stars hid like snipers, taking aim now and again when clouds gave them a loophole. Winter was an easy time for him to hide his secrets, for each dark street patted his shoulder and became a friend, and the gaseous eye of each lamp glowed unwinking as he passed. – Alan Sillitoe • We all ought to understand we’re on our own. Believing in Santa Claus doesn’t do kids any harm for a few years but it isn’t smart for them to continue waiting all their lives for him to come down the chimney with something wonderful. Santa Claus and God are cousins. – Andy Rooney • We are constituted a good deal like chickens, which, taken from the hen, and put in a basket of cotton in the chimney-corner, willoften peep till they die, nevertheless; but if you put in a book, or anything heavy, which will press down the cotton, and feel like the hen, they go to sleep directly. – Henry David Thoreau • We came to the house, and it is an old house, full of great chimneys where wood is burnt on ancient dogs upon the hearth, and grim portraits (some of them with grim legends, too) lower distrustfully from the oaken panels of the walls. – Charles Dickens • We have not wondered enough at the delights God has given us to appreciate them, and be good stewards. We have overworked the land, poured pollutants into river and stream, fouled the air we breathe with gas fumes and chemical smoke spiraling up from industrial chimneys. We have sown the wind. We are reaping the whirlwind. – Madeleine L’Engle • We launch our souls from the cannons of art and discipline, and on any one night, hovering over the chimney tops of Europe, halfway to the stars, there are armies of brightly spinning spirits that have risen like fireworks, tethered to the souls of those men and women who, by reflection, mortification, and devotion, effortlessly outdazzle kings. – Mark Helprin • Westminster Abbey, the Tower, a steeple, one church, and then another, presented themselves to our view; and we could now plainly distinguish the high round chimneys on the tops of the houses, which yet seemed to us to form an innumerable number of smaller spires, or steeples. – Karl Philipp Moritz • What good is truth, at midnight, in the dark, when the wind is roaring like a bear in the chimney? – Diane Setterfield • When an alluring woman comes in at the door,” warningly traced the austere Kien-fi on the margin of his well-known essay, “discretion may be found up the chimney”. It is incredible that beneath this ever-timely reminder an obscure disciple should have added the words: “The wiser the sage, the more profound the folly. – Ernest Bramah • When I walk across my living room from my chimney to my window, it takes me 10 seconds, but for a bird it takes one second, and for oxygen zero seconds! – Jean-Claude Van Damme • When I was a girl, my life was music that was always getting louder. Everything moved me. A dog following a stranger. That made me feel so much. A calendar that showed the wrong month. I could have cried over it. I did. Where the smoke from a chimney ended. How an overturned bottle rested at the edge of a table. I spent my life learning to feel less. Every day I felt less. Is that growing old? Or is it something worse? You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness. – Jonathan Safran Foer • When my mother died I was very young, And my father sold me while yet my tongue Could scarcely cry weep weep weep weep. So your chimneys I sweep, and in soot I sleep. – William Blake • When we hold onto the negative in ourselves it comes with endless guilt. We hold onto a lifetime of floating visions and regrets about what we should have done or should have become. Conscience recognizes wrong and tries to atone. But guilt turns into resentment. Conscience brings us closer to each other; guilt drives us apart. Create a new feeling. Every time guilt settles in your stomach, write “I forgive” on a piece of paper. Send it up the chimney, tear it up and flush it, put it in the garbage. Don’t eat it. – Jennifer James • When we talk of architecture, people usually think of something static; this is wrong. What we are thinking of is an architecture similar to the dynamic and musical architecture achieved by the Futurist musician Pratella. Architecture is found in the movement of colours, of smoke from a chimney and in metallic structures, when they are expressed in states of mind which are violent and chaotic. – Carlo Carra • When you were sleeping on the sofa I put my ear to your ear and listened to the echo of your dreams. That is the ocean I want to dive in, merge with the bright fish, plankton and pirate ships. I walk up to people on the street that kind of look like you and ask them the questions I would ask you. Can we sit on a rooftop and watch stars dissolve into smoke rising from a chimney? Can I swing like Tarzan in the jungle of your breathing? I don’t wish I was in your arms, I just wish I was peddling a bicycle toward your arms. – Jeffrey McDaniel • Where you thinke there is bacon, there is no Chimney. – George Herbert • With a tale, forsooth, he cometh unto you; with a tale which holdeth children from play, and old men from the chimney corner. – Philip Sidney • With gas cookers and chip pans in every kitchen, the chip-pan fire was by far the most popular method these Proddies had for burning their houses down. The second technique was the ever popular chimney fire and number three had to be the drunken cigarette drop on the carpet. Mind you, why they’d be cooking chips at this hour was anyone’s guess. – Adrian McKinty • Writing was a chimney for my blazing ambitions. – Storm Jameson • You can’t build a chimney from the top, you know. – Marian Anderson • You have these ‘hot towers’, tropical storm clouds acting like chimneys to carry heat to the upper atmosphere. – Peter May • Your goal is to achieve the best results by following their wishes. If they want you to build a house upside down standing on its chimney, it’s up to you to do it. – Richard Morris Hunt
