Pines Headcanons [Happy Birthday, Grunkles]

I cannot believe I just now got reminded of this- holy shit. Unfortunately, I'm not an artist so have these headcanons instead about Stan and Ford

Stanley ‘Lee’ Pines

He’s bisexual. This is not up for debate (/lh). It just made sense for him 

Stanley is ambidextrous. He can write and utilize both his left and right hands. This was something he self-taught himself in after the portal accident 

On the power of ‘I said so’, Stan does have some level of book smarts but instead of math or science- it’s creative writing. He’s got the talent for it; however, he rarely - if ever - shares these stories with anyone

Stan has some form of neurodivergency. Young Stan definitely gives the impression of ADHD but also I feel he’s got dyslexia- don’t ask me why. This is canon now

He does have scars from the time he spent on the run and doing his sales. I’m not sure what they are exactly, but just know he has them 

Stan knows martial arts. Other than boxing, I feel he would’ve taught himself in other forms of fighting- like the ones done on the streets and it’s a weird mix of martial arts and free-style fighting

He can be a bit of a poet, but for the most part- Stan prefers show-and-tell as his love language. He will present his partner with gifts, and makes sure they understand he’s there for them 

He’s kind of protective over his partners, and definitely has gotten into fights in an attempt to protect their honor. It’s ill-placed sometimes but he’s not about to let some bozo mess with them

Stan always sought his father’s approval. He attempted multiple times to perfect his studying skills before the science fair accident, but apparently Old Pa Pines didn’t seem to notice and the rest, well, it was already history

He fantasized of being a pirate when he was a kid. This is where the whole thing of going on a seafaring adventure with Ford came from! Unfortunately due to canon events, this soured out but he held onto a photograph he and Ford took in front of the beach as a memoir

He’s very much not a big fan of vegetables

Stanford ‘Ford’ Pines

He’s arospec and ace!

Ford absolutely loves puzzles. Why? It just weirdly fitting for his character

He definitely has C-PTSD following the events of Weirdmaggedon

Autistic Ford? Autistic Ford. There is no way he doesn’t have it- I said what I said

Before he got involved in the strange and paranormal, one of Ford’s main interests was actually crystals and rocks! It felt weirdly fitting for his character, and here we are

Ford is more of a cat person. At one point, he rescued a cat-adjacent creature from an auction and named her ‘Nova’. Of course, it’s far from a cat but well, we’ll get to that later

He would be into LARP if it exists in the Gravity Falls canon. Like, that man is a nerd and already enjoys the show’s version of Dungeons and Dragons, there’s just no way he wouldn’t participate in LARP

He does have scars from his time in other dimensions for thirty years. He’s very secretive about them and doesn’t let anyone see- not even Stanley

Ford deals with the aftermath of a burnt-out gifted kid- like, he was the prodigal son and got all the right honors, scores, all of it but as he got older- the more he struggled, the more he felt like something was missing. As the golden child, he was brought up with the notion he would be important but then got smacked in the face when he realized none of it truly mattered

He had a lot of issues adjusting to his new life in Gravity Falls, Oregon after he was brought back from the portal. Ford’s triggered fight-or-flight response would kick in with unexpected situations- like, he’s definitely pulled a blaster/space gun

He likes hot chocolate

Ford enjoys cuddle piles, let’s be honest here. Once he gets more comfortable, he begins making nests with the rest of the Pines family

He’s protective of his family!

MY HUMAN BILL HEADCANONS (KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU)

Okay, as promised, I wanted to share some of my human Bill Cipher headcanons I wrote down while reading through some of the early chapters so here there are: ------------- 1. After accidently injuring his foot with the broken glass during the first night Bill decided he doesn't like walking barefoot. He always wears either socks or some sort of slippers around the house. 2. When it comes to footwear, he doesn't wear any that have shoelaces. Usually, he wears his loafers. If he's to go out on a hike that requires shoelaced boots he will demand Stanford to tie them for him (even though he probably could manage it on his own after unbinding the brick that allows him to manipulate objects). 3. Judging by his behaviour, he could be compared to a cat, especially when it comes to personal space. With Stanford: at the beginning of their relationship he mostly invaded Stanford's physical-personal space when he was unconscious/sleeping but kept his distance as he was weary of him. He broke that rule only when he wanted to play with Stanford's feelings, get his attention or a reaction out of him. But when Stanford wanted to innitate any contact, he strained from it unless Stanford gave a reason for accepting it (and, still, not always did so). After Bill warmed up to Stanford, he began to seek the physical contact, crave it even. But only from his human: strangers (or rather anyone who isn't Sixer) are a no-go. He rather stay away from them as he doesn't feel comfortable with anyone else coming close to him. Doesn't mean he won't mind invading their personal space for his own benefit. Also, with more bricks unbound he began to act bolder around others as having powers makes him feel more secure in this flimsy human body. 4. Bill is shit at cooking. Half-reason being that he is just disinterested in learning how to cook as he has Sixer to provide for him. The other half is that he is a crackhead and Stanford is too afraid to give that man any access to the kitchen, especially the stove. He rather just cook for them both (and Fiddleford too), he likes cooking anyway.

5. Bill likes to dance (actually, that's canon in the fanfiction but I just like to think that he does it more often when no one is looking. He doesn't mind Sixer being around for that though). He usually dances to jazz music (duh). 6. He likes sour candy A LOT! Although he always complains that most of sour candy aren't actually THAT sour, especially not like the acid beverages he tends to drink back at his place. They are sweet though so not the biggest issue. 7. Popping candy a big yes for him??? (lmao imagine him kissing Ford while having popping candy in his mouth just to spite/surprise Ford). 8. He has a favorite spot on the couch and Ford just had to adapt to the fact that its Bill's spot (although- after warming up to him- Bill would sometimes change positions to be closer to Sixer, have his legs on his lap, leaning on him, any physical contact really)

9. He likes when his hair is combed. Sometimes he lets Ford do that. He just likes the sensation of the comb raking against his scalp. 10. He doesn't wear any shirts under his sweatshirts as he tends to overheat. 11. He sometimes likes to slip his hand(s) under Sixer's shirt to just hold onto his belly. Or he pokes him when the shirt rolls up revealing his bare skin. 12. Although he has a nice manicure (I imagine Stanford re-doing his nail polish for him while he doesn't take care of his own crusty nails lmao), his nails are always quite short as Bill tends to bite at them a lot. 13. We know that Bill takes his dental health quite seriously, but I cannot help but think of him projecting this obsession with teeth on Stanford, putting a lot of pressure on his human to take care of his own teeth too- just like he does with reminding Stanford to sleep or eat food.

i like english, and art, i enjoy reading and writing essays, i got gifted kid burnout but i love doing stuff too much to stop.

sometimes, i feel rather old. but im just a kid in this fucked up world and sometimes that makes me sad.

im depressed, and have anxiety, and a slew of mental health issues. i'm also probably neurodivergent.

im not very normal, in a lot of regards, but i think that adds to my character.

im trans, specifically transmasc, but im getting to a stage where im starting to not give a shit what they see me as.

im aroace, technically. but as far as im concerned i like my cat and i dont really know what else.

i do a lot of stuff, i consume a lot of media.

my birthday is soon, which i suppose is why im writing this, but i thought i should reintroduce myself to me. as i age i've managed to be the same person, in a lot of different ways. i dont always recognize the person in the mirror, but i think thats ok.

Life is confusing, and the older I get the more I see that.

I live the same day, every day.

Same food and same clothes, same faces and foes.

Today was not the same. Today, I met him.

Him being my new acquaintance, Imogen.

Something about him is different, and I like that a lot.

He reads the same book every day, over, and over.

Sometimes I wonder if he doesn’t even have to look at the pages anymore.

I asked him about it, his reasoning. All he said was that he cannot not read it. Nothing more. 

I wonder if it is magical, like he is cursed to read it forever. But he’s probably just like me, needing the same.

Today he invited me over. I agree to come, though it disrupts my routine. My therapist told me I should step out of my comfort zone.

To be honest, I think that is bullshit, but so what.

I do feel the panic rising within me, yet Gen has a certain calming presence. 

That reminds me, I call him Gen now. 

We sit on his bedroom floor, staring at his ceiling. It has constellations, it’s spectacular. 

Then, we play Monopoly.

Then, we watch TV.

Oddly enough, I don’t recognize the show, yet something draws me in. 

That’s when he hands me the book, his book. Yet, it's not as weathered as his copy. 

Odd. 

I didn’t know he had several.

Up until this moment, I saw no other copies around the room.

I Analyzed The Ninjago Movie Instead Of Sleeping

I have real mixed feelings on this movie. But not for the reasons you might think from a fan of the TV show.

The movie didn’t NEED to be connected to the show. And it clearly wasn’t trying to.

It was meant to be an AU in a way.

(If you look at the behind the scenes one of their original rewrites was a plot of them going back in time to save Lloyd’s dad from becoming the villainous figure he is in the present day.)

So I can forgive the inaccuracy so long as it could stand on its own as a proper story.

It doesn’t do that.

If you DON’T compare it to the show:

You got a movie with SOME good jokes, amazing animation, (SERIOUSLY THIS MOVIE LOOKS BEAUTIFUL AND VISUALS ALONE ARE A CHEFS KISS TO ME) but is so strangely paced that it feels like the movie starts at the middle of the story and never shows the beginning, and feels like a completely different movie halfway through, and is also very choppily edited.

(I even double checked a clip of the movie just to prove my point there: When Lloyd uses all his dragon mech weapons on Garmadon, they play the exact same sound effect and explosion, just with different angles, SIX TIMES. FSM WAS THAT EDITOR HUNG OVER WHEN DOING THEIR JOB THAT DAY?! And that’s just one example I’ve got. I think this was the first time EVER when I was in a movie theater and I distinctly remember asking “What is wrong with the editing here? Who thought this was good editing?? Who thought this was appropriate in any way???” So I thank this movie for giving me such a memory and making me value good editing.)

You also got a world that isn’t very well fleshed out, characters that the movie chooses to not focus on except the main character and the main villain. And you got a movie that tells its audience it’s okay to forgive your parents that neglected you and are active terrorists even if they earned or done absolutely no redemption whatsoever.

I mean Garmadon in this movie BETRAYS them and leaves them to rot so he could terrorize the city again at the end. Then gets eaten by the cat. Then Lloyd forgives him. Idk what more you want me to say.

I’m not gonna act like Crystalized did it any better though. Pick your poison.

But then you got fans of the show. The people who watched the show since kids (that includes me). Who are naturally bias towards the shows lore and characterization…

OOOOOOHHH boy…

I don’t hate EVERY portrayal of the ninja in the movie as much as other people. I actually think there’s some good ideas for an AU version of these characters here. Problem is the movie never does anything with them.

Well, I say I don’t hate every portrayal, the one I truly cannot stand is Zane’s.

There’s just so much wrong with how they portrayed Zane that it just does not work. Not as an adaptation of the character. Not in any way that makes sense for this universe and is actually kinda insulting.

There’s no other robots in this city. (Like there are in the show) Why is Zane the only one and why is he in high school? Why would Wu ever pick a robot to be a ninja?

In the show the reason is pretty simple: Wu didn’t know at the time.

But everyone knows in the movie. What’s movie Wu’s excuse?

There’s also in terms of personality.

Keep in mind later seasons of the show have the same issues, so I’m talking about what it was at the time of the movie.

Zane’s whole robot identity is crucial to his character. The show introduced him as ‘the strange one’. As he couldn’t understand social cues, took things very seriously, didn’t share the same sense of humor as the rest of the team, had a hard time displaying his emotions, and bonded with things the others didn’t and excelled at certain areas like cooking.

He’s a character that connected to a lot of neurodivergent people in the audience who could relate to him. No he’s not intentional autistic rep, but one that definitely mattered to the people that headcannoned him as such.

(Also helps that they introduce other robot characters later that clearly don’t have the same characteristics he does. So really it depends on what you see.)

So the reveal that he was a robot was such a huge deal to not just the plot but to him as he finally got a concrete definition of what he is and who he is. And the show NEVER decides to say “You know, it would be so much better if you were a human!”

“Why can’t you just be normal?!”

That’s part of why I personally can’t stand fics that make Zane human. It just doesn’t feel right to me and misses the point of the character.

While I absolutely did not expect the movie to cover his… really heavy backstory with his inventor/father and how he outlived him, then got his memory and sense of identity wiped by him moments before death, which was meant to be an act of sympathy but would actually harm Zane’s mentality for the entire show…

The movie didn’t need to adapt that. For all we know, movie Zane could have a very happy backstory. And that would be fine. All I wanted was for the identity-seeking aspect of Zane’s character to matter in some way.

It didn’t.

The jokes they use for Zane in this movie are that of “Haha, he’s a robot. Isn’t it so funny that he doesn’t understand humanity very well?”

You know, something that in one episode of the show was portrayed as a BAD THING for people to think that of him! And that those people needed to learn to respect him for who he is!

And that’s the ONLY thing they do with him. Just robot jokes. Very stereotypical robot jokes.

Again, later seasons of the show are guilty of this too. So I will not act like the show is perfect.

For the reasons I listed, these are actually far more offensive and harmful than you think. Especially fans of the show watching the movie. Him being the only robot in this movie world makes me think even more that this actually is autistic coding… and that makes it so much worse.

Zane being a robot being equal to autism is its own discussion. And has its own problems on paper alone. Whether or not this is your headcanon of him, and whether or not you think this is good representation either way is up to your feelings and experiences. (Personally I think it’s better than some live action shows attempting this)

The others don’t even seem to trust or want to be around him that much. The others seem annoyed by him half the time. Like they’re only tolerating him because he’s on their team. Yeah they don’t say that but simple looks and gestures are enough to get that impression. And not once does anyone ever express Zane’s value in their team. That’s the ONE thing that would’ve had me forgive this all.

But there’s my rant. The others?

Jay is mostly fine. I think this personality for the movie is a neat AU concept. Yes show Jay is openly terrified of things and awkward, but if there’s something he wasn’t was SHY.

Movie Jay is a shy and nervous wreck. And you know what? For a high school AU, I think it works. It doesn’t erase Jay’s essence entirely. They at the very least kept the detail of his character that he’s a fast learner.

I appreciate that.

Cole is actually a REALLY interesting concept to me with the AU idea they gave.

On the surface it’s just ‘He’s a DJ and willingly old school’

But if you see the show, this is actually an ODD approach. Because show Cole has a very complicated relationship with music.

In the show, Cole’s parents thrived in singing and dancing. His father specifically was a performer that won several awards with his band ‘The Royal Blacksmiths’. After Cole’s mother passed away, his father proceeded to push his ideals and his passions onto his kid and pressuring him to become another version of him. It got stressful enough that Cole ran away from home and resented music, something that used to be a bond of family for them, and that’s where Wu found him and made him a ninja.

Throughout the show, Cole would open up to music again more, but it’s pretty gradual and a very subtle bit of character development for him throughout the show. He doesn’t need to say “I hate making music” to get the point across. He only starts the music route again whenever it has something to do with making a family member, blood or not, happy.

So movie Cole is interesting to me for that reason. Because at the start, he basically IS a mini Lou. His whole thing is music and it’s heavily reflected on his personality.

To the point where his element in the movie isn’t even animated or portrayed as earth like it’s supposed to, instead it’s… sound waves?

Weird choice. Interesting one though cause maybe that’s just how movie Cole functions.

So it’s “Oh, what if Cole DID follow in his fathers footsteps and DID want to become a musician?”

Very interesting approach for a completely different approach of character development.

But the problem? Just like the others, not utilized.

But I do think this was an interesting AU idea. Is it accurate to the show version of the character? No. But that’s kind of the point I think.

Then there’s the RGB siblings. This is where it gets kinda weird for me.

Thanks to the movie, a lot of my friends mistook Kai and Nya for being twins.

They are not twins in the show. Kai is older.

I don’t think that dents their characters too much in the movie so long as the same points were across. They’re the blood related brother and sister who raised themselves when their parents abandoned them, and climbed out of the ashes to protect each other, and found a new expansion on their family that didn’t have to be blood related to count.

These two, in different ways, are the support of the team and especially Lloyd. They’re usually the lancer characters that Lloyd goes to when he can.

I still say that about Nya even though originally, she was NOT a ninja, but rather was a Samurai with a mech of her own invention that acted as a Tuxedo Mask for the ninja. She didn’t become the water ninja until Season 5.

Which… I know the movie takes heavy inspiration from the first two seasons, the beginning, so for those who haven’t seen the show watching the movie… yikes I feel bad about the lack of a spoiler warning. Same goes for Zane being a robot.

But I think that’s also a factor into Kai, at the former half of this show, (again I’m talking pre-movie with this). He was the first character we were introduced to and we’re following in the show before Lloyd ever showed up. So naturally he’d be the one with the most attention to supporting the Green Ninja. Something that was very vital character development for him individually as well.

He’s the old school one. He’s the cool one. He’s the one who looks out for you even if you don’t want them to. He’s the one that will jump to anything without thinking. He’s also the one with the most value in tradition out of the ninja, as a blacksmith instead of a techie and as a traditional sword fighter rather than a fancy complicated weapon. He doesn’t get involved in tech willingly till he learns Twitter is a thing.

And in the movie, I think they took this characterization and said “Eh, give it to the girl instead.”

So most of show Kai’s character traits are now movie Nya’s. She’s the cool one with the most passion for traditional stories, she’s the one with arguably the most talks with Lloyd to calm him, and she’s pretty loud and brash in personality.

Not saying show Nya is not those things, she is. But the difference in the show was that Nya was HUGE on independence and doing her own thing. Being the only woman and a younger sibling in the main cast is actually a big deal to her. Not wanting to have her destiny be decided by the world or her brother as a damsel in distress or a sacrifice, she took to tech to invent her own ways of helping. Her own character.

Until destiny told her “Actually no, you can’t be the person you want to be. You have to stick to tradition that your mother had and be the water ninja.”

That’s… honestly a very brutally honest message that not a lot of people I see give credit for. Cause yes, expressing yourself and being your own person and being able to make your own fate is amazing… but it’s not always possible.

Sometimes you can’t be the person you want. Sometimes the world just will not let you. That doesn’t mean your identity is worthless, though. If you go with the flow, you can actually find that fate has plans for you that might not suck after all.

Basically a ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ messaging there.

It’s part of why Nya’s whole thing throughout the show is her starting as a damsel trying to reinvent herself and her stereotype, and ending as a willing sacrifice and death of her whole identity that she doesn’t regret because she’s embraced the flow of life and purpose. Even if she forgets herself in the realm of spirituality, her loves one’s never will.

…Until Crystalized undid ALL of that. BUT LETS NOT.

Movie Nya just really isn’t any of that. She’s basically just her brother.

Which… I’m actually fine with. The show has some bumps in the road in execution of her story anyway. And they want the only female of this team to not be a background character cause that’s look bad. I totally understand that. And her being a sibling to Kai makes me forgive it a whole lot more cause it does make sense.

But again, we don’t know what their lives are like or if they have similar backstories to theirs in the show at all.

But where does that leave Kai?

Well his whole character in the movie seems to basically be “I’m the loud one and a complete klutz and meathead.”

Basically TD Tyler.

It’s a personality in the movie that bled in the show post movie. While I personally think it was not THAT bad in the show, Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitsu made me go “Okay. I understand now.”

As for movie Kai, that’s really about it.

It really was an early indicator of just giving Kai’s character traits to other characters. Before the show was visibly doing it.

Cause movie Lloyd is also basically just Kai but with a different backstory and context to situation. But honestly, I DO see what they were going for here.

As the ONLY ninja to get ANY focus, this version of Lloyd is well explained on what his life is.

In the show, he’s an abandoned child in an abusive boarding school who heavily idolizes his father, Lord Garmadon, and runs away to become a super villain. Only for Destiny to tell him not to, and we see his true colors and that he just wanted his family together and to love him. Something that was… hard. Considering who Garmadon is.

That is actually carried into the movie. Just cut out him running away. Here’s the difference.

Show Lloyd loves his dad and refuses to hurt him until he has to. While he is the Green Ninja, he didn’t resent himself being Garmadon’s son. What he resented was the destiny that took them apart.

Movie Lloyd HATES his dad for abandoning him, terrorizing the city, making said city cancel him for EXISTING, and he wants every excuse to shut this man out of his life forever.

That does make sense. And to the movie’s credit, the movie logic DOES work to make this version of Lloyd make sense.

It makes the movie pretty mean spirited and kinda unpleasant at times. But it works for the story.

I described Lloyd as ‘The Emo Child’. In the show. But that’s two words.

Emo. CHILD.

He’s still a kid. He’s still the youngest. He still has his own child-like wonder of the world and the aspirations that of a child would.

Yeah he’s a lot of angst. But he’s also a sweet kid who deserves hugs.

That’s not very apparent in movie Lloyd. Not that it needs to fit movie context.

But because we never see how the ninja in the movie got together, we have no idea why Lloyd even accepted being the Green Ninja in the first place. He even says in the movie that he’d give it up if it meant he didn’t have to be Garmadon’s son.

Movie Lloyd is the only ninja in this movie with an actual character arc. He resents his dad, tries to be rid of him, only to get consequences for it, goes on a quest to fix his mistake, bonds with his dad to learn he’s… sympathetic? I guess?? And in the end forgives his dad and chooses to let him in his life again.

Simple. Fine. It works on Lloyds end just fine. And I have to give credit for the movie making Lloyd resenting Garmadon more logical than Crystalized ever did.

It’s Garmadon’s end that just makes the whole thing a bad message in the end of ‘forgive your abusers.’

Yes he’s funny. That doesn’t undo his actions.

No it’s not undone in the show either, but at least you can buy the forgiveness there because every character knew that he had no choice.

In the show, Garmadon is the Oni Child of the FSM. Thus all it took was for another Oni creature, the Great Devourer, to trigger his blood and FORCE him into the evil role without his consent. It forced him to do nasty things to his loved ones and the land his dad created, and by the time he became his evil form, he was forcefully stripped away from all of his loved ones and a chance at normal life. So the only way he could ever get that back was to turn the world into his own image, thus having the world become him too. A monster.

The show made it abundantly clear that most of Garmadon’s evil deeds are either out of ambition for what he deems as helping the family, or not his fault at all due to snake venom influence.

I THINK the movie also has this because they do address him getting bit and becoming the creature he appears as in both versions.

Better than nothing I guess.

But then you get his ‘sympathetic backstory’ which is pretty much just a love story between him and Koko-

Yeah Lloyds moms name is actually different in both versions. And in role.

Misako abandoned her child to try and solve the destiny crisis, then returned to his life to help her kid out.

Koko remained a mother to her kid and supported him even when everyone hated him.

These are very different characters basically, and which one you prefer is up to you. Personally… I actually prefer the movie. I do think the mom was the one character that the movie actually improved upon. Especially with a very interesting story for her.

In the show, Misako is a researcher and just the fair maiden figure that Wu and Garmadon fell in love with. To which she chose Garmadon because of Wu’s letter that Garmadon forged his name on… it’s complicated.

In the movie, she was actually a fighter as well and took a part of the wars Garmadon was in. She enjoyed the thrill of the fight and fell in love with her opponent in a pretty cute montage.

But then they had a baby and her reality changed, realizing she could not raise her child on the battlefield. And when Garmadon refused to change his mind, she took Lloyd and left him behind. So she could be a mother.

Explains her actions in the movie all throughout very well and I never got lost when it came to her. She’s probably the one character in the movie I felt the most sorry for. She’s such a sweet parent and her interactions with Lloyd are probably the best parts of the movie. I wanna hug her.

But that’s all that’s shown of Garmadon. Apparently Garmadon was oppressed, but that’s told at the end and not shown or been significant at all.

Yeah show Garmadon did similar stuff, but again, WASNT HIS CHOICE.

Garmadon doesn’t even PROCESS his kids existence or his own negligence three quarters of the time. And you expect me to buy a redemption from him?

You know, I’d be fine with it if he was just a one dimensional villain and the story of the movie was about Lloyd putting his energy away from a family that doesn’t care about him and more towards a surrogate one he has.

But no. You gotta have Lloyd forgive Garmadon and have Garmadon redeemed.

Cause that’s what the show did.

Even though this is supposed to be an AU not connected to the show so we can do whatever we want.

The most they do for Garmadon’s redemption is force him to be the mentor after Wu got yeeted off a bridge by a butterfly, have him go “Oh yeah, I DID shoot people out of a volcano!”, teach his son how to catch, and tell his son his backstory.

(Speaking if, Wu to me is basically the same. Just different voice actor delivery. I got nothing to say on him)

And then if that IS redemption, then he failed it. Because he offers Lloyd to be his general when they take over the city again, showing he’s learned nothing. Then when Lloyd says no, he steals their magic weapons and ditches them in a temple leaving them to DIE. Then he goes to terrorize the city again.

What redemption. /s

Again, this was all HIS choice. If it was not and if it was snake venom, they couldn’t at least give a visual cue or address it?

And now LLOYD has to apologize?

NO. LLOYD WAS RIGHT. THERES ABSOLUTELY NO REASON WHY HE SHOULD LET HIS DAD INTO HIS LIFE. THE DAD HIMSELF PROVED THAT.

It just paints an unintentional bad message of ‘you have to forgive your abusers’

I’m sorry but Lloyd doesn’t owe this Garmadon anything.

I do like Lloyd’s VA delivery though, and the speech about green being the color of life. I actually like the idea of Lloyds power being his heart. Yeah it’s not flashy powers like in the show, but for an AU, it’s a really cool idea and I wish they used it more.

I have mixed feelings on the celebrity casting. Did I expect the original voice actors? No. But this casting wasn’t awful.

Garmadon’s VA is amazing in this movie. Jackie Chan as Wu is very subjective I feel, love it or hate it. Nya and Jay’s were really good too. I think the only one that didn’t work for me was Kai’s VA. Just… why does this teenager sound like a 50 year old man??

But honestly, I think the thing that got to me the most about the movie was something I praised about the show not too long ago.

The bond between the ninja.

I talked about how the show is a master class at character dynamics. There is almost no point where the characters are just standing there in one big clunk. Someone is saying something, someone is making a comment, someone is doing something, and it’s usually there for others to see and react to. It’s a very small thing, but it keeps the scenes alive and fresh the whole time and helps the audience be sold on the characters bond.

They don’t wait for the scenes of “Okay it’s time for characters to interact”. They just do it all the time.

And guess what the movie did? They’re just there in one big chunk all the time. With “okay it’s time for characters to interact” bits.

It’s one thing to not explore the other ninja at all. It’s another to ignore their bond.

In the show, they’re a found family. They all had rough upbringings in life and find a new sense of purpose in each other.

That’s NEVER emphasized in the movie except for one speech at the end Lloyd makes. Mostly cause we don’t know the other ninjas lives, and we don’t know how they even got together. Cause as I said, the movie starts at the middle, and awkwardly cuts after Garmadon is forgiven to be the end. We don’t know what it is about THIS ninja team that we should care about. It’s not shown.

All were shown is them being a team by circumstance only. Then Lloyd pulls out the cat laser and the cat nearly kills them. Then they hate Lloyd for it and spend the rest of the movie making fun of Lloyd.

Which yeah they make fun of each other in the show too, but where it ended in the show was playful teasing in the middle of moments that showed they cared about each other. And when one bond between two or more of them was broken, you felt it.

Here? I don’t know that and there isn’t anything besides the high school montage to show they cared. Just some comments about “Oh it’s okay Lloyd, it’s just awkward that your dad is a terrorist”. And then they make fun of Lloyds expense.

It’s mean spirited. It makes me think they don’t like each other. And it’s not like they ever apologize for it. They’re just teammates because Wu said so. They’re just tolerating Lloyd cause Wu said so.

Honestly the bloopers for this movie show more personality and more of this bond than the entire movie does.

So my life is kind of okay at the moment. I’m just dealing with a lot of issues and tough situations with my family.

My mom calls me yesterday, completely sobbing her eyes out, and tells me that she and my brother are basically being evicted. My heart completely broke and I honestly didn’t know what to say to her to make her feel better or improve the situation. She asked me if she could stay with me and I unfortunately, and it kills me to say this, had to explain to her that she can’t right now.

I live in a 1 bedroom apartment with my husband and son and 2 cats. There are times when we struggle to make ends meet ourselves. I have also explained my mom’s situation to my landlord and asked if she could stay with us and my landlord told me that she cannot live with us. She was very polite about it but explained that legally, my mom can’t stay with me. Now, my brother is the one paying for everything where they live. He makes enough money to afford their apartment where they live and yet he wasn’t paying it! He was blowing his money and then trying to pay rent and bills. My mom was recently approved for disability but that isn’t enough to pay rent on her own. She can just help my brother pay bills or chip in for rent or pay for food.

This has been a monthly thing with him. Every month they get a court notice about being late with the rent. My brother came flat out and said he is tired of being an adult and wants to be able to do the things that he wants to do. That he’s tired of being responsible. He blows his money on Pokemon and One Piece cards! Whenever they face eviction, he just expects me to take my mom in even after I have explained countless times that legally, I can’t let her stay with us. If I were to do that, we would all be thrown out of my apartment. Even after I explained this to him, he still flipped out on me and said that I don’t care about them and that I have turned my back on them ever since I moved out on my own and got married.

I call my mom everyday, I text her all the time, I visit her whenever I can. I am always doing what I can for her. It may not be financial help but I’m always trying to be a good daughter by being there for her. I listen to her, I understand her, and I will happily have her move in with me once we are able to get a bigger place. Right now, we aren’t able to. He condemns me for not getting a place with them but how could I have possibly done that and rely on him when he constantly wants to blow money? My husband and I would be left to pay for everything while my brother would just expect to live with us for free. The world doesn’t work that way. He is going to be 30 years old and doesn’t want to take responsibility for his fuck ups. Then I’m turned into the bad guy because I don’t know how to help and I’m not able to help. We have even given them money for their rent in the past btw. Money that we have told my mom that they don’t have to pay us back because I know they are struggling. My mom? Willing to pay us back even after I told her no. My brother? Nope. Says he wouldn’t pay us back to begin with even if we asked because “I should have been helping out to begin with.”

Now, another thing that is frustrating is, neither one of them take mine or my husbands advice when we give it to them. The company that owns their apartment complex is fucking shady and I’ve explained this to them and told them to get everything from them in writing. They haven’t done that. The whole situation is a mess and the woman that works their front office is a bitch. They were supposed to go to court on March 6th to pay the rent for what they owed for February. They paid for February’s rent even before the court date so the woman said she will call the courthouse and let them know that the rent was paid. She never called! And now she’s saying that the reason they are being evicted is because they were supposed to pay the rent for February AND March even though the paperwork didn’t say shit about paying for March. So she just apologizes and says “wow, you guys are handling this a lot better than others. We had to call the cops the other day because a man was threatening me because he’s being evicted too.” Gee, I fucking wonder why you’re being threatened when you’re messing with a person’s livelihood. So due to her miscommunication with my mom and brother, they are now being thrown out and all she can do is apologize?! Bitch, you’re the reason people are losing their homes! Then all she has to say is “I’m just doing my job.” Well you’re doing your job wrong dumbass if you can’t even communicate with people properly! It’s a disaster and she doesn’t even seem to have any remorse towards my family.

I understand that my brother keeps fucking up but he was actually able to pay the rent but due to her messing up, they still have to be out.

I’m honestly losing my mind over this and I don’t know what to do. I feel like a horrible daughter knowing that I can’t help my mom. My brother says that he already has a place to go, he’ll stay with his girlfriend (who is a fucking nightmare btw. I think she has been hoping they will be evicted so he can live with her. I swear that girl is a walking curse!) My mom has no where to go and my family is so fucked up that she can’t turn to them either.

I’m just devastated and feel awful. Then I also feel guilty for being happy or enjoying myself when they are struggling. I don’t play games, I don’t write, I don’t work on pictures all because I feel like it’s wrong for me to feel happy or be happy when my mom and brother are miserable. My husband tells me that I shouldn’t feel this way but I honestly can’t help it. I can’t focus and my mind feels like a depressed void right now.

I’m tired of feeling helpless and sick of people making me feel like I don’t care.😭💔 I try my best but idk what to do anymore.

I appreciate if you read this whole rant. I’m sorry for my lack of posting. This has just been taking up a big chunk of my life and my mental health because it’s becoming an every month thing now. I just…idk what to do.😞

StC Post-Mortems: Captain Plunder

Captain Plunder and his cast of support characters - including many enemies, two regular crew members and a whole host of disposable extra crew members - may have suddenly disappeared from StC as of issue 108, but they still enjoyed a lengthy career in the comic before that. So it’s time to take a look at what was, what might have been and my admittedly far too long list of fan ideas I’d have liked to have seen from him (I like Captain Plunder, okay?) as I examine him for today’s StC Post-Mortem

How it started

This is Richard Elson’s original design for Captain Plunder, which seems to have stayed mostly the same when he appears in the comic. It’s interesting to see notes such as “gorilla type features with tusks”. I’ve never put much thought into what “animal” Plunder was based on, since I guess I generally think of him as being more human-like, but seeing gorilla, I can see that. That makes sense to me

Captain Plunder’s actual first appearance was in the main story of issue 23, where he’s presented as a villain who’s kidnapped Amy Rose (not long after her own first appearance), but ends up being talked around to being somewhat on the heroes side - even if he did have his fingers crossed behind his back when he made a deal with them

At the time, there weren’t many other villains outside of Robotnik and the few that there were tended to be one-off characters who worked for Robotnik anyway. So when Plunder appeared to buffer the rogue’s gallery, it was a welcome addition

How it went

With lots of silly pirate adventures fighting against everyone! After his first appearance, Plunder was a somewhat regular guest in the comic, sometimes working with Sonic and sometimes against him, but always for his own gain. He generally didn’t work with Robotnik, so at least he had that going for him

Of the crew members shown above, only Filch - the lizard ghost who Plunder shot dead for taking the last biscuit -  would remain constant from the start to finish of the series as Plunder’s loyal second-in-command, with the background fodder of crew members being cycled in and out on every adventure. There was a professor guy for one story that Plunder made a big deal of, but then he was gone without a word about him in the next story

The only other notable character to join Plunder’s crew was fan fave Simpson the Cat, a forth-wall-breaking rubber hose character who Plunder met in prison and, upon helping him to escape, would become the only other permanent member of Plunder’s crew

This would also mark the beginning of Plunder’s solo stories. For his early appearances, Plunder would always be escorted by a Sonic character, but it was clear that the team wanted to focus on telling stories about Plunder himself. With his new own series being introduced as a backup story in an issue that also featured Plunder in the main Sonic story, it was a good way to get the kids who came for Sonic onboard with these extra pirate adventures

How it ended

Exactly like that. In the conclusion to a six-part Captain Plunder solo story called the Spice Maidens, we see the crew marooned on what appears to be a desert island, after their ship was blasted out of the sky by yet another old enemy who Plunder wronged

To top it all off, Plunder was still cursed with bad luck at this point. I remember as a kid that I’d sometimes wonder what became of Captain Plunder and if we’d ever see him again. Maybe I should’ve written into the comic to say that I missed his stories

Were there any unused future plans from the StC writers?

Wait, so we were going to get a Plunder and Ebony story? That would’ve been the coolest thing ever! Two of my favourite StC exclusives in the same story? Damn, we truly live in a cruel timeline that this didn’t come to pass. I do wonder what what Kitching meant by the curse being “something far more significant” as well

What would I personally have liked to see next for him if StC continued?

Are you kidding me? I cannot come up with something better than Plunder seeking help from Ebony to get his curse lifted. Just throw Super Sonic into that story as well and it’ be perfect

What if he was in other Sonic media?

I have a bunch of different ideas for stuff I’d have liked to have seen from Plunder in a fantasy scenario where he could’ve appeared in other Sonic media:

Classic Sonic Games:

By “Classic Sonic” I mean the current version of it that’s still getting new games and comics and stuff. Captain Plunder was introduced to us as a pirate from the Mystic Cave Zone and if he was in the games (or the IDW Classic Sonic comics), I’d like to see them focus on that. Give him a cool boss fight. Make him a regional boss for that zone. The sort of character where Sonic knows that if he goes to that zone, he’s going to have to deal with Plunder. Honestly, the Mystic Cave Zone theme is already like Captain Plunder’s theme in my head, so that’s the association I have with it

You could potentially use the same idea to make him something like an Egg Boss for the Mystic Cave Zone in a Post-Reboot Archie Sonic setting, but I just don’t really like the idea of him working for Eggman. He’s better as a separate problem who can be swayed either way

Modern Sonic Games:

“We already have pirates on Blaze’s world” …Cool! Add more pirates!

The Sol Dimension is still largely unexplored by the franchise, but we know there’s a lot of sea-faring, so we can assume there’s more than one group of pirates. So, have Plunder be another problem for Blaze to deal with who’s either from the Sol Dimension itself or else a dimension traveller using that starpost of his who crops up every now and then to cause trouble

Alternatively, have him be a zeti. This is where I hold my hand up and admit that I haven’t played Lost World, it’s in my Steam backlog but it came out during an era where I wasn’t that into Sonic outside of the comics. So I don’t have a lot to say about this idea. In general, Plunder is a character who I don’t think needs to be “Sonic-ified” because I think his unique design already makes him stand out as a villain in the Sonic line-up, but if he does have to get a Sonic-y makeover, then instead of making him something like a walrus or gorilla, why not use him to expand upon an area of the series that SEGA keeps calling back on (at least, they invite Zavok over for sports sometimes) but hasn’t explored much? Adding pirates to the zeti mix just sounds fun to me

Sonic Underground:

I maintain that you could wholesale put the entirety of the StC exclusive characters into Underground without having to change a thing. I mean, this guy exists in Underground for crying out loud! Plunder wouldn’t even by the most unusual sea-faring character Sonic's seen over there

Skies of Arcadia:

I also have a couple of non-Sonic suggestions and this is my first “hear me out”. Captain Plunder is a sky pirate. SEGA already has a game about sky pirates. You know who’s favourite game is Skies of Arcadia and has also worked collaboratively with Nigel Kitching in the recent past? Ian Flynn. What I’m saying is that Plunder could totally work in this world. Let Kitching (& Dobbyn) handle the Plunder parts and let Ian handle the Skies of Arcadia parts and I’m sure they could make a fun crossover of it Captain Plunder, No Strings Attached:

My final suggestion and probably my greatest wish for the character is that Captain Plunder could’ve existed outside of Sonic Yeah, I know I went hard on wanting to include all of the Plunder stories in my blogging because he’s part of Sonic’s world, but mostly it was just because I like them! Team Nigel clearly had stories they wanted to tell about this character outside of Sonic, they were always very quick to ditch the Sonic elements in the Plunder stories up until they could finally tell a few stories that were purely Captain Plunder stories, so I want to let them cook. The reason I know about this character is because of Sonic, sure, but now that I do know about him, it’s a shame that he’s tied to Sonic when this could’ve been a wholly original series. And yeah, we’ve seen guys use the Sonic brand to tell stories about their own stuff before - look at Archie Knuckles or the Paramount Knuckles series - but Captain Plunder is one time where I’m like “Actually, this slaps and I would love to have more!” It makes me regret that after StC finished, I didn’t think to look into other stuff these creators worked on. Hell, I could still do that right now, but I’m gonna get this blog finished first

So yeah, my final answer is that I think there’s lots of ways you could fit Plunder into the Sonic brand that I have fun thinking about, but ultimately I’d want to keep Plunder as he is… just without the Sonic strings attached

It's a Saturday morning, I'm at work, and have far too many thoughts.

A fear I held when I first began transitioning as a trans man was how that would affect my relationships, especially dating. I know I wasn't the only one who had fears. I started dating someone when I was far too young to commit to what would become a 4 year relationship and we quickly settled into unhealthy patterns. It got toxic, eventually I realized just how toxic, and I left. In the meantime, my health issues got worse and my fears about dating became more about whether or not I would meet someone who was accepting of the physical limitations I struggle with.

And then I met my current partner. A fellow trans masc person whose previous relationship had been even worse than mine. We both carry a lot of baggage, but it's easier to carry it all when you don't have to alone.

He shared similar fears, a fear that I think most people coming out of toxic and abusive relationships fear. He worried that he was too damaged to be a good partner, carried too much baggage to be worth it, had too many triggers to be worth my time.

Of course, none of that matters. Your past toxic relationship will not make you unlovable to the right person. Your baggage will not be too heavy for someone who sees how wonderful you are. And especially for my trans siblings, you being trans will never matter or be a problem to the person who wants to be by your side.

I will be with my partner as they begin their medical transition. I will be there to hold his hand during blood work. I will be there to empty his drains when he has top surgery. I will be there to watch them become the person they were always meant to be. And I cannot be more excited to be there.

Everything that I do heals as much in me as it does in them. His presence in my life is a balm on all of my old wounds. You will never be too much or too scarred for the person meant to walk by your side. There is beauty in finding healing together. There is beauty in mending each other's hearts. There is beauty in queer love in all of its forms.

There is beauty in the partner sleeping in my bed at home right now, likely being yelled at by my cat. He is my heart and soul. And god, I am so lucky to have him.

Hey I came across your posts about the qsmp situation and although I absolutely understand your anger and dissapointment, things are not as easy as one might think. For one, Quackity Studios and Quackity himself are already in a legal procedure against the previous admins who stole money off the project, therefore, while it is still open, they legally cannot say much about the entire situation. We do not know how deep it actually goes, so there's that. Maybe at the beginning if it had all been resolved amicably it would have worked, but I find it hard to see.

The reason why those previous admins were not contacted, in my opinion, is because they 1. stepped away from the project, meaning, they do not form part of it currently, therefore they do not necessarily need to know everything that goes on in the administration and 2. as much as it does sound stupid there were a bunch of stuff here and there that these admins leaked, in fact, I remember being really weirded out because Lea in particular (no hate to her I empathize with her situation) was talking in Twitter about things that had nothing to do with her situation, like lore stuff, and that is a breach of trust in a person that they won't go to the public inmediatly, much more now that they've kinda gathered an audience by themselves. I do believe the ex-admins deserve closure, but I do think it should be well prepared, not empty promises, like saying "oh yeah we're gonna pay you" "well how much" "we still don't know" >> that would be a disaster, both PR and legally wise.

I'll put in in a read more because there's a lot ot unpack, and I'll try my best to explain why I don't think the studio ghosting ex employees is excusable.

First of all, i agree with your first point. I don't expect news from the legal procedures Quackity is having with the people who embezzled money from him. It's no one's business but his, and yeah, he doesn't have to share anything about that. Especially if it's legally binding.

Now, my problem is how the studio never contacted any of the victims (the ex employees). This is a separate issue altogether that has no link with the embezzlement issues. And should have been treated as much.

It is a workers' right issues.

The studio had 2 months and a lot of good faith on their side, but they didn't even ask for the victims' testimonies, despite being encouraged multiple times to do so by the french union. The amicable solution definetely was on the table, but by repeatedly ignoring all the warning signs, they've now put themselves in the situation where the only way to make them acknowledge their mistakes is probably going to be through legal procedures. And that is unfortunate, because again, everyone was willing to give them grace at the beginning.

Hell, with Quackity leaving the administration, they had a chance very recently to make this right, in a way that fans and ex employees would have probably been satisfied with. Something like, "the new administration seems to know what they're doing, i am willing to trust them". But they didn't.

And the argument that the admins that werent contacted have breached their trust by talking on twitter... is still not a good reason imo? Like, it started precisely because they werent heard in private. Sure, now the cats out of the bag and some ex admins are probably mentally blacklisted by the current admins, but it's still not right to ignore them.

People posting their testimonies in public is their right, and wouldn't have happened if, again, Qstudio had asked for them privately. Also, talking about behind the scenes info about past lore is just not that big of a deal to me. They're not spoiling any future lore or event. They're not breaking anything that wasn't already broken. But, yeah maybe in their minds, that's what's happening.

To me though, the trust argument falls completely flat when people who didn't do anything wrong (like Lumi or Ryan) have been ghosted. Especially Ryan who is still supposed to be working for Qstudio. Are they fired? Are they still in but ghosted? These are questions no one should have to ask.

And to me, there are ways to keep contact with the admins without making empty promises. The message I wrote in my precedent post was, to me, not an empty promise, but here is the more professional version: we want you there and appreciate the role you had in the project, but we realistically don't know if we'll be able to keep you there. We'll be in contact in the future if the opportunity to get you back in presents itself, but for now, we have to consider you not part of the project anymore.

Yes, it's harsh, yes, this would have made the fans mad if shared in public, but its more honest and to the point than being ghosted.

Finally, I do understand that my posts might have been more angry than usual, and im sorry if I've made people feel bad in any way, but I never maintag these posts for a reason. All I hope is that the people who want to still enjoy the QSMP take care of themselves and don't go through the negative tags.

Canon I outright reject

So I'm not sure if there's a canon I outright reject - I do reject his cute baby face though, I am not going to lie.

I also outright reject that he's twunky and is more masculine. Thicker, muscular, but he is short.

Obscure headcanon

He is passively suicidal with very little to no self preservation (this is seen in canon, he actively puts himself in danger). If he were to die, his thoughts would not really be on the idea of survival but more, "Oh. Well, this is okay. Retribution for my own sins."

Also a sillier, cuter one: he makes anonymous donations to the new animal shelter in Mondstadt and has a big soft spot for them. The winery is just crawling with different critters and he has named each and everyone, including the pigs, and that goddamn rooster that chases him every morning. (He also likes to keep an eye on Diona if Kaeya cannot - makes sure she gets to Springevale safely if she's working at the Cat's Tail).

He has nightmares about the night he killed his father and is still hesitant to ever celebrate his own birthday.

I DO NOT KNOW if this is obscure either BUT it was Arlecchino he fought and it was Yelan who saved him and recruited him, tyvm.

Unpopular opinion about them

He's still good game wise. He's still fun, and Diluc is actually an incredibly nice person deep down. If anyone ever pays attention to the dialogue or have read his lines will know that he's a gentle soul, and there's still bits of the old him that comes out, but unfortunately he's learned to hide it and push it away.

Since fandom treats this as canon even though it's more a misunderstanding, I'm gonna say this:

Diluc does not hate Kaeya. Diluc is awkward and uncomfortable and awful with feelings, things are tense between the two of them but in no way does he hate Kaeya. In fact, he still cares about Kaeya (a lot) and vice versa. And will work with him on need to know basis.

ALSO he's not a dick to Venti. He's a lot nicer than what he lets on. His comments about Venti's bill is just him making jabs, Diluc is not the best in the beginning with joking or teasing so it falls short. Yes, he gets annoyed with Venti - quite often - but he respects Venti and does view him more as a friend and a guide than, "that annoying, homeless bard who keeps stealing from me". If he actually had any sort of issues with Venti pilfering from the Winery or leaving a large, open tab, he would actively do something about it. Archon or not.

He's not an asshole, he's emotionally repressed.

💉 King of the Cage - Mila Kane ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mila Kane really can write mafia romance. Here men are obsessed and perfectly morally gray. Her women are feisty. Like this is just the darkish romance version of the golden retriever boyfriend with his black cat girlfriend.

I loved the dynamic between the two. They just worked so well together. Giada was so grumpy and insistent that she didn't need a man until Bran came around and then she melted. And Bran just needed someone to believe in him. They had such great chemistry.

The plot pacing was pretty good. There is an event at around the 80% mark that I felt was unnecessary. It added and element to the story that felt like it made it longer needlessly. At the same point though, it tied into other plot aspects and helped wrap up things pretty nicely. So it was a difficult trade off, I suppose. Overall, I really enjoyed this, like I do with the rest of Kane's work that I've read.

🐎 Live for Me - Brittany Ann ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I rarely like books with the premise of second chance where the woman is the one that "messed up the relationship" to begin with. Mostly because I like to watch a man grovel and beg. But from the past books that I've read from Brittany Ann, I decided to give this a chance. I am so glad I didn't let that deter me here.

Brittany Ann just as a way of writing dark cowboy romances that never border into abusive like others I've come across. This isn't dark because the MMC treats the FMC like garbage. It's dark because there's stalking and murder. That being said, I would honestly consider this dark-lite. Like the themes are dark (obviously) and the MMC is morally gray, but there aren't really any glaring sexual trigger warnings (know what I mean?)

Anyway, I love the characters. Both Abbie and Beau had personalities outside of each other which is so refreshing lately. And their chemistry together was fantastic. The reason for their separation was a damn good reason and the fact that Abbie handled it on her own makes sense (I know I'm not the only one here that gets upset when a character doesn't communicate.) There were some major editing issues, like misspelling and bad punctuation that I cam across and frankly, that's the only reason I didn't rate this 5 stars. Overall, I'm a Brittany Ann fan. I've loved everything I've read from her so far and I'm looking forward to more.

🏒 Sleet Kitten - S.J. Tilly ⭐️ I didn't think I'd ever say this about a S.J. Tilly book, but I really disliked this. If you had told me this was written in the early 2000s, I would have believed you and maybe given it more grace than it deserves. Instead we are given a book that was published in 2023 and so cringe-tinted boring that I cannot begin to describe my disdain for it.

The characters were so terribly bland. Katelyn was just a self-deprecating bore. She likes book and she's not stick-thin. There, I've given you her entire personality. Jackson is a giant man who likes The Godfather and plays professional hockey. Well, there you are. That's Jackson. They had no depth. If there was chemistry, I missed it completely. By the 100 page mark, nothing could have made this book better. 

I don't want to believe that Tilly's entire hockey series will be like this, but this was not a good place to start. Also, Kitten?! WHY?!

🕵🏻‍♂️ Created the Destroyer - Warren Murphy & Richard Sapir ⭐️ You could argue that this book is a product of the times in which it was written, but even if you can look past the misogyny and racism within the book (seriously, wtf), you still have to contend with mediocre and, at times, confusing dialogue, pathetically weak prose, and the pacing of a frozen snail.

The fact that this has over 150 books in the series really speaks to the fact that mediocre white men will gobble anything up that uplifts another mediocre white man. I'm really glad that I bought this second hand (not for the $4 that I wasted on it, but for the fact that at least it won't become royalties to the authors.)

🍎 The Garden - Elsie V. Aidinoff ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ When I first read The Garden over a decade ago, it became a point of contention between myself and my Catholic mother. I started asking questions. I started believing that there had to be something more than the religious indoctrination that had been pounded into me since basically birth.

This became the first in a series of straws that broke the metaphorical back of my beliefs. This story is beautiful and refreshing. At times, it hurts and will break your heart. Seeing the beginning of the world through Eve's eyes as she becomes the, for the most part, reluctant mother of humankind, was wonderful. As a teenager struggling with her faith, this was revolutionary. As an adult woman who has completely stepped away from organized religion, this was a reminder.

The prose is beautiful while not being too purple. The pacing is perfect. The characterization of everyone was so vivid and vibrant. You can't help but love Eve, the Serpent, and, even Adam, despite his flaws. You also are made to look seriously at God as a fallible character, something less than omnipotent.

Overall, I truly love this book. It held up after all this time and I cannot recommend it enough.

⛸️ Unsteady - Peyton Corinne (Audiobook) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It is entirely unbelievable that this is a debut novel. Everything about this story was absolutely perfect. Both Sadie and Rhys were so well written. Their respective traumas were so sadly developed. They were vibrant and angsty and devastating. Both Sadie and Rhys worked so well together even while Sadie was doing her damnedest to keep Rhys at arm's length. The relationship building (maybe not the sexual relationship) was such a good slow burn. But aside from the romance, there was a good friendship between the two as well.

I just enjoyed everything about this book. The pacing is fantastic. All of the characters (sides included) are so fleshed out and wonderfully written. The plot line itself, outside of the relationship, was so compelling. I really enjoyed the fact that our important sides were set to have their own books as well.

Overall, just an amazing read. One of my favorite college hockey romances to date.

☕️ Reckless King - L.M. Dalgleish ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a decent read. This issue lies solely in the length of the book. I have read 50 other romances with a similar plot and the exact same tropes and normally I'm okay with the same story in a different font. The problem lies with the fact that this was almost 500 pages long and for the amount of actual plot it has, it never should have been more than 350 pages.

I like Tate. He was sweet and kind even while ribbing Violet. I did get a bit irritated with Violet's naivety. She just came off as slightly childish with the constant blushing and stuttering every time Tate said any innuendo.

I just really hated how long it was. The first book was so good and this felt like it fell far short.

🤖 All Systems Red - Martha Wells ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was just wanting a fun little palette cleanser of a book. Why am I now getting emotional over an android that refers to itself as Murderbot?

This was just fun and quirky and I found myself rooting for every single character in this book. Everyone had a unique voice and Murderbot was just so hilariously deadpan throughout. For a sci-fi novel, there was significant personality with our main character and we were inundated with too much actual math and science.

I'm very much looking forward to the rest of The Murderbot Diaries. This was such a fantastic read.

🏀 The Right Move - Liz Tomforde ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed this. I feel like I should start this review off by saying that because despite my 4-star rating, I have some issues with it.

To begin, Indy is not terrible but to be honest, her constant crying got to the point of annoying pretty quickly. I get it. The guy that you grew up with and dated for 6 years cheated on you and that screwed you up, but holy hell, talk to a therapist. Especially if you are now having issues with orgasms. Then we have Ryan Shay. And you will not catch me hating on this man, but you will find me begging him to also see a therapist. I do appreciate a good men's mental health rep in a book, truly. But love does not cure depression and far too many romances tout that untruth too much.

This book would have been absolute perfection if therapy was at least mentioned and, I don't know, utilized at any point and if it was like 100 pages less. It was just a touch too long. Also the 3rd act break (not quite a breakup) was complete bullshit.

🚀 Artificial Condition - Martha Wells ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I did not think it was possible to be so emotionally attached to a fictional android that refers to itself as Murderbot, but here I am. I also find myself falling in love with a highly intelligent albeit sarcastic transport unit that our Murderbot refers to as ART (Asshole Research Transport.)

This was just such a good sequel to All Systems Red. We get more of Murderbot's background while getting to see them evolve (as much as a construct can) further into a free thinking, rogue android.

This entire series is very quickly moving to the top of my favorite reads of all time. I say that I don't really care for sci-fi far too often to be fawning over these books. But it do be like that sometimes.

🧚🏻‍♂️ Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can't say that I would have finished this book if I hadn't committed myself to either reading it completely or getting it off my shelves and out of my life. It had been languishing unread for 10 years and finally decided to read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. Truly, I am glad that I did.

The world-building is beyond anything I have come across in years. It was vibrant and realistic. It seamlessly blended magic and fantasy into the real history of early 1800s Britain. But the thing that really stood out in all then 1006 pages of this tome were the characters. If someone had told me that Jonathan Strange and Gilbert Norrell were actual practical magicians that lived and practiced magic in the 19th century, I would have believed you, just based on how much they came off the page in this book.

The problems that really came out for this book were the pacing and the ending. It was exhaustingly dense and at times trudged along almost reluctantly. And for all its length and plodding, the ending was so unsatisfactory. It was neither happy nor depressing. It was like a sneeze that you lose. Painfully disappointing and it certainly didn't feel like the length justified it.

Overall, I enjoyed this. But this is a one and done read for me. I cannot see myself ever going back to it for me to glean any missed information.

1️⃣ : was warriors your first animal based fantasy series? if not, what series was?

I think so! And I'm kind of surprised to be honest! English is not my first language and Warriors wasn't translated into my native language (Spanish) until I was outside the primary audience. (And even then I wouldn't have paid attention to the translated editions because by then I was transitioning to reading exclusively in English, but mostly the popular YA things everyone my age was reading.)

However I had been aware of these books' existence for years due to hanging out in furry circles before first reading them at around age 17. And I didn't join the fandom until years after that.

Ah, Jayfeather! Jayfeather, Jayfeather, Jayfeather. What can I say about you I haven't said before? Where can I even begin to spill out my brains about this grey kitty?

I think first things first it's fair to admit my liking for him stems at least a little bit from familiarity bias. As I said above I had been aware of his existence years previous to ever reading a Warriors book let alone a book he features in. In fact, due to the kind of discourse that I was a distant witness to, his name had been seared into my mind for a long time. I barely knew the basic facts about him but from the beginning I was like "So... where's this Jayfeather I hear so much about?"

But ultimately I think he's legitimately a character that has many elements that appeal to me. From the top, the idea of a character that has a contentious relationship with the priesthood is gonna connect with me. His relationship to his religion and position of authority is not really all that similar as my experience as an apostate gay Catholic who was formerly an extreme zealot. But it touches on similar points.

The issue of his ableist treatment by the narrative goes hand in hand really. One sticking point for me has always been how he, a congenitally disabled twelve year old is heavily pressured into swearing himself to celibacy. The confluence of these two factors of course inspire much sympathy and vicarious outrage but also touch on my own very complicated relationship with the concept of celibacy which allow my engagement with the canon material to turn self-reflexive at times.

Taking a crack at fixing canon is a very rewarding experience and his writing is so mired in poorly thought out implications, plotlines that ultimately go nowhere, and a flanderization problem after his run as a protagonist that the challenge cannot be anything but alluring. And just the fact writing him involves pretty interesting in my opinion research and the added challenge of not using visual imagery.

To get personal for a moment. Upon reflection I think in some part the reason I'm so engaged by research into blindness to write him is because it reminds me of my late grandfather. He used to work for the organizing committe of a fundraiser lottery for a charity that provided services and accomodations for deaf and blind people. He used to involve my brother and I in the organization's work and taught us a fair amount about deaf and blind culture and the stuff his organization did. I'm very grateful for him planting that seed of empathy in me.

But anyway, to the guy I'm writing all these paragraphs about! He's also just fun to read about! I'm entertained by bitchy characters, simple as! I don't even think they need to have commeupance for being mean to justify their existence or whatever. Although I will always point out a) he's mostly bitchy in his inner monologue, out loud he's surprisingly subdued if you read Po3, and b) the idea that he's softer to children or his patients is a canonical part of his characterization, not a fandom invention, even if it's been dropped since.

And everyone knows I'm the sibling dynamics guy still right? That's of course another thing that's important about him, he has siblings! And his protagonisthood revolves around them! Idk, that's just one of my particular obsessions I can't really explain. But it definitely helps.

From here the thoughts become more vague and it's more just me going "blorbo!" as he rotates on the mental microwave. But yeah.

yanno. it's interesting that the game flat out says "sex worker" I was not anticipating that level of clarity about Kawakami. and given even modern standards and attitudes towards SWers, I'm relieved to see that the Villains of this story are the ones trying to use her status as a sex worker to ruin her life. Because, yeah, that's villainous behavior, Persona! I'm glad we agree on this.

Theo is Spooked... Again

Pat laughs it off. 

“I mean. It’s not really for us to decide, kid. Either it was or it wasn’t, factually. We have no say in the matter when it comes to reality,” they ramble. 

This leaves Theo looking pensive, but less afraid. 

It sounds like a distraction to you.

“Anyway, to answer your question, usually. Ghosts made from traumatic events are usually either angry or like. Sad and lost. Or both I guess,” Pat shrugs. 

They gesture for you to eat more of your food.

You sigh, but dutifully comply.

Once you’ve eaten a few more bites you ask: “What kind of ghost is the shadow?” 

“Dunno I’d have to meet them,” Pat say’s flippantly. 

You give them a flat look. 

A quick glance at Theo shows he’s doing the same.

Pat heaves a comical sigh. “Alright, I guess I can give you a hint this time since you’re having brain trouble,” they say, over dramatically. 

Theo is trying not to laugh. 

Pat winks at you. 

“So. If I had to guess, I’d say this shadow is the sort of ghost with Unfinished Business,” Pat says. 

“Oh?” Theo says, looking almost impressed.

“Yeah. This sort of ghost is usually pretty at peace with their own death, Except for they still feel like there’s something they still need to do. Look after their friend, feed their cat, tend their garden, stuff like that,” they explain. 

That all makes sense to you.

But you aren’t sure it all adds up. 

You can accept that the shadow is a ghost. And it does seem friendly and interested in helping you. 

But you can’t reconcile that with the ghost you’re supposed to be looking for. 

Your head kind of hurts as you think about it. 

Theo and Pat both lapse into silence as you think, Pat chowing down and Theo simply staring off into space. 

He fiddles with the glasses sticking out of his shirt pocket and its like something snaps inside your head. 

You and Pat aren’t here to investigate a ghost. You’d forgotten that. 

You still aren’t sure why Pat feels the need to lie to Theo to this extent, even as they begin to befriend him. 

Maybe they’ve also forgotten? Memory issues do seem to be going around like the flu these days. 

You run back over the conversation again. You can’t guess Pat’s motives for telling Theo his house is haunted. 

It feels more like you’re the one that’s haunted. 

“Oh. Myo-“ Theo cuts himself off. “Excise me, I misspoke. Sylv. It wasn’t your shadowy friend that lead you to my house today, was it?” Theo asks. 

He suddenly seems… different. Like someone opened up photoshop and turned up the contrast and saturation on his very presence. 

It seems that he remembers your earlier visit now. Had he been faking it before? 

Pat wipes their mouth with a napkin before piping up. “I was wondering the same thing. I said you should stay in the cars since you… had a migraine,” Pat hesitates on the lie this time. 

You realize you forgot to tell Pat about the woman. 

Oops. 

You could always lie. 

It’s not like Pat doesn’t do it literally all the time. 

But Theo is giving you this expectant look. 

Like he knows what you’re supposed to say. 

You sigh. 

“I met this woman in the woods. She freaked out when she saw me and tried to attack me. So I went inside to get away from her,” you summarize.

Pat looks like their blood pressure just shot through the roof. 

Upset would be an understatement.

“This Cannot keep happening,” they mutter.

“Patience,” Theo says reproachfully. 

Pat deflates. “Okay. You’re right,” they nod, seemingly to themself. 

They turn to you and look you right in the eye. “I’m not mad at you, especially since you don’t remember any promises you’ve made me about this. I’m glad you’re okay, good job getting to safety. We’ll discuss this further after I take a smoke break.” They say, like they’re checking phrases off a list. 

Theo hands them a lighter on their way out. 

That was… odd. 

Now you’re alone with Theo again. 

Except…

“You aren’t Theo, are you?” you say to the person who looks like Theo, but has entirely different body language from him.

“Oh. You’re observant, but are you connecting the dots?” says not-Theo. 

“I’m trying,” you say. “Why’d you bring that up? You knew Pat would freak.” 

“Ah. Pat cares about you though… They want to keep you safe,” not-Theo placates.

Something dawns on you. 

“You’re the one that told me not to be alone!” 

Not-Theo gives you a small smile. 

“She’s a danger to all of us. There’s only so much I can do, off-script. Please go easy on me,” not-Theo pleads. 

Then Pat is sidling back into the booth smelling of tobacco.

Okay so I wrote some sort of summary of the plot of Sera Myu Chronicle. I might have already forgotten some things and such and my grammar sucks cause it's super late so yeah AND SPOILERS!!! DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS

So the musical actually has its own plot and isn't just the previous musical made into a concert. It is kind of a pseudo sequel to the previous musical ir something. At the beginning Luna mentions something about an old evil returning, referring to Snow Kaguya, after that the 4 inners are talking about going to eat shaved ice(kakigori) at this new place and wondering where Usagi is, as she wanted to go the most. Chibiusa and Mamoru appear and they reveal that Usagi flunked another test and is forced to study by her mom (& Artemis). Then a totally not suspicious person called Ms. Frozen appears telling them that she's the inventor of the new famous shaved ice and is planning to hold an audition to cast people to be in a commercial advertising the shaved ice. And she heard the girls sing so she wants them to take part in the audition. Some songs are sang and Luna feels left out as she would like to sing as well but cannot do that since she isn't a human. "Ms. Frozen" appears and reveals her true identity to Luna and brainwashes her and turns her into her human form calling her Snow Luna. She is then ordered to capture the Silver Crystal or smth along those lines. Some songs are sang and later Snow Kaguya/Ms. Frozen and Mamoru have some sort of ab lid corner where they talk about Riona's (Mamoru's actor) past roles in Sera Myu and kinda fool around but at the same time when he answers each question, the Snow Dancers freeze a part of his body. (They had these badges that had ice"氷" written on and then just stuck them on) One of them actually hit Riona in the face accidentally with the badge which created a funny ad lib. After that Snow Kaguya attacks and tries to brainwash Mamoru which SURPRSINGLY doesn't work. After the Senshi realize what is truly happening, they go on the offensive only to realize that Snow Kaguya has brainwashed Luna. They start going back and forth with the Senshi trying to get Luna back to her senses and Snow Kaguya trying to keep Luna brainwashed. They eventually manage to save Luna and return her to her cat form and they reassure her that there are things that only she can do and all that nice stuff. They then realize that they left Artemis all alone when Usagi escaped her home and get all panicked and they sing a new song as they curtain closes.

After that the special guests arrived which in this case were, Akiko Kosaka, ANZA, Hisano Akamine, Misako Iwana, Emi Kuriyama and Akiko Miyazawa. Surpringly there wasn't any talk show or anything, like in Ai no Sanctuary, which was kinda sad since they just performed their medley and... left. Well they did talk like a minute or so, ANZA mentioned that most of the people in the audience probably weren't even alive when they started Sera Myu and says that everyone was probably able to watch the old musicals later from video tapes and Youtube and that was when Kosaka-sensei stopped her and told her she can't say that. So I guess they are pretty much aware about the copyright mess with Banmyu lol )and iirc ANZA has mentioned the musicals being on Youtube on one of her and Kosaka-sensei's livestreams). And THEN they left. But while there was no talk show, in the pamphlet, there is a Q&A with all of the guests so I guess it was just a time management issue. After that the service numbers started and we were allowed to stand while cheering and I was at first literally the ONLY ONE who was standing XD after a while some girls behind me stood up, probably cause they couldn't see anything from behind me. The staff where just holding these signs saying that's okay to stand but everyone just ignored them. Kinda rude lol It was only when Moonlight Densetsu started when more people started standing and there were 6 songs in the service numbers so yeah. Also there was no curtain call rip
