M*A*S*H Seasons 8-11; The Reagan Years.

Although Mash is set in the 50s, we have now reached 1980-83. America's wars are long forgotten or completed by special teams. War is no longer a group effort. And Mash is a show, defanged. The mad doctors have a superior who supports and mentors them, the head nurse no longer fights them (mostly) and although there is weekly conflict, its not all that serious. All the edges are slowly getting sanded off. Even the adultery is gone! Several of the principals are married and not cheating; in later seasons Hawkeye is shown striking out more than rounding home. Charles Winchester seems a-sexual, perhaps his upper class manner puts off/is put off by the regular nurses. You get the feeling that the show got some notes about halfway through: turn down the horny antics! And worst of all, Klinger has dropped all drag, a;lthough he is allowed a special baseball outfit. So what is there to say about it? Well, there are the little things: The guest stars begin to be modern: Ed Begely Jr! Terri Garr! Patrick Swayze! Shelley Long and George Wendt In separate episodes)! Jeffrey Tambor! These arent cameos as a reward for success, but single episode roles that could feed a starving actor for a season. The bit players: Igor Straminski (pay attention to that letter M) played by Jeff Maxwell. I love the joke here; hes one letter away from genius, but what a distance that letter makes. The wall eyed somewhat dim cook is never without a funny throwaway line. Kelleye Yamoto (played by Kellye Nakahara), the watchful, compassionate eye of the ever present non-size 0 nurse finally gets a featured episode where she chews out hawkeye for NOT treating her like the other girls and making a pass, when he finally comes around to her good qualities, shes shown not to be a wall flower, but to have already snatched another beau.

And last and least Sargeant Rizzo replaces Sargeant Zelmo Zale with his endless cajun scheming. Anyway- Ive found in January that the preceding feature film MASH will be playing so, that will wrap up this thrread
