Hot take, but some of y’all don’t know what goth means. Libby doesn’t wear nude lipgloss and white crop tops; she wears heavy black eyeliner and dark lipstick, and platform knee high boots with buckles.

Normally, I wouldn’t be this picky about the representation of a book character, but as someone who’s be made fun of A LOT for having an alt style, it hurts to see that what is a coping system for many people (not saying it is for her, but it doesn’t seem far fetched); fashion, is being diluted to make her more digestible. When Libby changes her image to please Alisa, she dyes her hair AND drastically changes her fashion, and that is what I feel is happening here. Again, normally, I wouldn’t care, but being goth is such an important part of her character, and it’s so common for alternative or “weird” traits/characters to be adapted so people are able to see someone they relate to. Alt characters are frequently changed or dumbed down to niche one trait (for Libby, it’s often her hair/liking black) so instead of having interests that are weird and creepy, they are just quirky and different while still being societally acceptable. She IS weird and she IS creepy. That’s not an insult.

You don’t have to agree with me but I ask that you at least consider it.

I genuinely don’t think or believe Grayson Davenport Hawthorne is the type to drop out of Harvard. The man probably color-codes his trauma and schedules his breakdowns between 4–5 a.m. so no one notices. He’s too much of a perfectionist. Quitting would feel like failure, and God forbid Grayson Hawthorne fails at anything.

Even if he hated it—if every lecture felt like a slow suffocation under the weight of expectations—he’d grit his teeth, suit up, and call it personal growth. He could be emotionally imploding and still be like, “This is fine. I’m fine. Everything is under control.”

Grayson’s not the golden boy. He’s the golden standard. The benchmark everyone else is supposed to measure up to, whether they asked for it or not. He’s the family’s gold-plated shield—polished, poised, untouchable—and shields don’t get to crack in public.

Dropping out? That’s too loud. Too human. Too messy. Grayson doesn’t do public failure. He internalizes it, represses it, then turns it into another reason to overachieve. He doesn’t walk away. He disappears behind the curtain, not center stage. He’d rather suffer in silence, smile for the cameras, and hide the damage where no one can see.

If he ever did leave, it wouldn’t be for himself. It’d be for someone else. And even then, he’d wrap the whole thing in a shiny strategic bow and sell it like it was always part of the plan. You wouldn’t see the cracks unless you knew where to look.

Grayson Hawthorne wouldn’t drop out. He’d graduate with honors, a migraine, and several unprocessed traumas, and call it “character building.”

Why it fits:

This quote captures the emotional isolation Grayson is steeped in. He carries the burden of the family’s image, legacy, and unspoken expectations, and he does it alone—because that’s what he believes is expected of him. He doesn't share the weight, doesn’t let others see the pain, because vulnerability doesn’t fit into the mold he's been shoved into. Like The Giver, Grayson is a vessel for pain, pressure, and memory, but he suffers in silence, locked away behind a carefully curated image. He's not just lonely—he’s alone, even when surrounded by people.

That’s the tragedy of Grayson Hawthorne: he doesn’t collapse. He endures.

So, my thoughts:

I LOVED TGG

I was a little worried that the switching of 3 POVs was gonna trip me up, but I got used to it by the halfway mark.

Attempting to solve the riddles myself was really fun!

I was screaming at Rohan and Sav during the 88 locks riddle. What do you mean they needed 3 chapters to figure it out? Sav, you grew up with a piano (if I remember correctly)

I liked the pacing. I don’t have any complaints about the writing and dialogue being emo and stuff (like the other books) -> I have discovered that I like plot-driven books more than character-driven ones with lots of thoughts

So about those nicknames…

I attributed Savannah and Rohan’s questionable nicknames for each other to their unconventional childhoods — probably lacked opportunities to develop nicknaming skills

I decided to swap out “British” for “London” when reading. I can decidedly palate “Savvy”. It could act as a pun (?). The bar is low. After a while, I didn’t care about the nicknames. Doing small skip-overs when reading yk

I was a little confused on Gigi’s relationships with Knox and Brady. Well, first of all, I couldn’t and didn’t bother to differentiate the two men :”) so in the end, all I got was a muddled picture about the dynamics

But I don’t care cause I’m too busy re-reading the Gray/Lyra scenes

Last thing, I don’t know why, but now that Avery + 3 Hawthorne bros have become the “evil” game masters who have control over the game and players, I see them differently. Like I feel Avery is less relatable now (?). Part of that makes me feel sad and part happy cause our girl is now doing Big Things.

Avery and Jameson have a Minecraft world they have spent WEEKS on

Jameson blushes every time she puts their little Minecraft beds together as if he doesn't LIVE in her bed

Jameson gets kicked out once a month so Avery, Libby, Max, and Xander can have a girls' night/sleepover

he pouts every time

at this point he doesn't even knock before going into the bathroom while she's in there

Avery is a mochi girl and Jameson honestly doesn't get the hype

they love reading Nancy Drew books

they dress up as Ned and Nancy for Halloween and nobody gets it

Avery always has something sprained and Jameson teases her relentlessly for it

his phone wallpaper is a photo Xander took of him burying Avery in sand during one of their vacations

hers is a picture she made Grayson take with his nice camera of Jameson and Nash as they were walking on the lawn

Nash asked Jameson to be his best man and he was so sure it'd be Grayson that he cried

they both have CRIPPLING self-esteem issues but they are so adamant that it's wrong when it comes to the other person

Avery is Libby's maid of honor as well (obvs)

when she goes to try on her dress for the wedding (they had taken the measurements a month in advance) it's too small and she starts crying

Libby has to call Jameson to come calm her down

Continuing off of Grayson Hawthorne Harvard dropout

Grayson doesn't get to choose soft. He chooses survival.

This is what I think Grayson’s internal monologue would be if he stayed;

Dropping out isn't an option.

Not for me. Not for a Hawthorne.

That would mean admitting weakness. Letting go. Quitting. I wasn’t raised for that—I was raised to win, to endure, to stay the course no matter how far off it veers from what I want.

Not that “what I want” matters.

I didn’t choose Harvard because it felt right. I chose it because it was expected. Because anything less would’ve been a headline. Because no one asks if I want to carry the weight—they just hand it to me and assume I’ll hold it.

And I do. Every time.

Most days, I wake up before my alarm. Not because I’m excited. Because my body doesn’t know how to rest anymore. I organize my day with military precision because it’s easier than thinking too hard about why I’m even still doing this.

Sleep is optional. Emotional well-being? Laughable. But control? Control is non-negotiable.

Jameson can spiral. Xander can play. Nash can wander. I’m the constant. I’m the one who doesn’t get to fall apart. I’m the one who keeps everything from crumbling. That's the role.

Do I want to leave? Of course. There are moments I want to walk out of this place and never look back. Set it all on fire. Watch it burn in silence. But I won’t. I can’t.

Not because I believe in the system.

Because I believe in discipline.

In keeping my promises.

In being exactly who they think I am, even when it’s slowly killing me.

Grayson Hawthorne doesn’t quit. He doesn’t crack. He graduates with honors, smiles for the cameras, and convinces everyone—including himself—that it was all part of the plan.

And if there’s damage underneath?

That’s none of their business.

finished re-reading The Brothers Hawthorne.

I loved it (as always), however, I do want to point out a couple of things.

Firstly, the dialogue between Jameson and Avery. Somehow, I can’t visualise their conversations. Maybe it’s the writing style or that I didn’t feel that wrapped up in the book?

** edit!! Avery’s reaction and thought process is given in all 3 Tahiti mentions in the book. I guess what irks me is that Tahiti seems to be a somewhat one-sided thing, where Jameson is more eager to use Tahiti but Avery keeps rejecting to use it. Character dynamics maybe? (See replies for quotes) Oh, and take a shot every time jlb elaborates on Grayson’s mannerisms — on how and why he’d been brought up to conceal don’t feel, don’t let it show~

I feel like a couple of “spoon-fed inference” about why Grayson chooses to act or talk a certain way is enough. Readers should be old enough to infer afterwards? Show don’t tell, yk

^if I could add with the most sincere intention, I get flashbacks of Bella Swan half the time while reading Grayson’s POV
