Project One Research Journal
Tumblr media
Arthur Ganson, “Machine with Concrete,” 2009, Art Electronica Museum of Future. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/time-art_n_4519734
Form: This work is created with gears and other mechanical elements.  Content: The gears take so long to turn that the last gear would not be able to move for billions or trillions of years. The catch is that even if enough time has passed for that gear to turn, it wouldn’t be able to because it is embedded in concrete. Process: Ganson created this by setting up machines with mechanics to move the gears extremely slowly, thus causing it to take so long for the last gear to turn.
Tumblr media
Salvadore Dali, The Persistence of Memory, 1931, oil on canvas https://www.wikiart.org/en/salvador-dali/the-persistence-of-memory-1931
Form: This work is created with oil paints on canvas. Content: This painting is said to depict the relativity of time. The melting of the clocks is to show that time is not solid nor a deterministic influence. Process: The Persistence of Memory is inspired by the thought of the theory of relativity and Dali’s central thinking of softness and hardness. He then brought a dream he had to life within this oil painting.
Tumblr media
Christiane Baumgartner, Nordlicht - 6.08pm, 2018 https://cristearoberts.com/artists/54-christiane-baumgartner/works/2440-christiane-baumgartner-nordlicht-5.59pm-2018/
Form: This work is a woodcut on Japanese paper, and is one of four in the set. Content: Baumgartner takes still images from her own moving videos and makes her works of art based off of that freezing of time.  Process: For these works, stills are rendered into pieces of wood by making horizontal reliefs that are narrowly spaced on the surface.

Project Idea: Time
1.) Calendar Adventure: This idea is about a stick figure traveling through the week on a calendar. While he’s walking through the week, I will draw the background based on how I’m feeling during the week which it will the stick figure. First, I will buy a calendar and post on my fridge to remind me to do it. Second, I will document how I am feeling during the week or day and go in details of what happened. Third, I will sketch out the journey of the stick figure in my sketchbook before I draw on the calendar and be creative with the background based on the emotion. Lastly, draw out the final sketch idea on the calendar by using charcoal, paint, pen, markers, or pencil. For example, my mood of the week was happy then I will draw the stick figure having giant ice cream and the background will have sunlight with dancing rabbits and singing grizzle bear.
2.) Walking Rainbow Sharpie: The idea is about to grab pieces of paper then tape around the rainbow color sharpies and start walking around campus or to class. For two weeks, I will focus on a different color sharpie then form a rainbow. Maybe for the final week, I will use tape up all the color sharpie together to paper and start walking. First, I will buy color sharpies that represent the rainbow and use random scrap of papers. Second, for two weeks of the color, I will take the top off and tape to scrap of paper then I start walking for two weeks with the color. Lastly, I will collect all the results of the walking and form a rainbow with the paper.
3.) Story Boarding of Different Time: The idea is about a character will go through different periods will try to steal a famous painting. Each week, the character will go back in time and try to steal a famous painting to sell it in the present. I am thinking about doing a mix of traditional drawing and digital drawing for this idea. I will try to use photoshop for the famous paintings and I might use the illustrator for inking the drawing. I’m still working on this idea but it seems fun to do with experience through periods to visit artist like Leonardo Da Vinci.

“Time” artist statement
This is a painting that was inspired by many artists that work with nature and mixed media. This painting depicts a city scene, one that is quite generic and ordinary. There are dark colors, and an over all dark palette used to help create this feeling of drab and ordinary surroundings. The city looks back at the viewer, and the sky looks sad and cold. But from the center of the composition there sprouts life. Chia seeds were planted and allowed to grow through the 4 connected canvases to incorporate actual living nature into this stale and drab environment. The actual living sprouts are accompanied by painted in versions of plants and various growing organisms, ones that would be found in this kind of environment. This painting has two distinct messages. One, that the passing of time brings growth. Growth and renewal are a cycle that continues on indefinitely. Growth is change, and change is constant. These seedlings started as tiny little ideas of a plant, and grew over the course of the semester into actualized sprouts, with laves of their own. Growth and change will occur over time, with or without our permission. Second, nature reclaims all. If we as a society stopped interfering with a particulare area of land, stopped cleaning it, looking after things, keeping up with maintenance and rebuilding of broken things. This place would be reclaimed and nature would slowly through the passing of time take this space and grow around it, envelope it in natural growth, and turn it into a living breathing place again. Nature is the most powerful force on this planet, and humans can for a time keep places the way we want, build things, destroy things, but only for a time. Only nature is permanent.

PROJECT 1: Research Journal #3
The Perfect Lovers
Félix González-Torres
1987–1990
Tumblr media
Form - Two clocks are in sync with each other, set at the exact same time.
Content - Like the title says, the perfect lovers would always know everything and anything about each other. They would never have to doubt one another because they’re always in sync with each other. Always able to depend on one another for anything and everything. The perfect lovers, would appear to be fine on the facial side, but perhaps there might be problems on the inside? After all, clocks do eventually fall out of sync, but once those issues are fixed, they’re re-synced and back to work.
Process -  Two synchronized clocks are shown off side by side. Eventually one will stop and when the batteries die, then they are replaced and re-synced.
I chose this piece despite of me trying to find another painting because I honestly liked the idea of something physical being used for time. Plus I can relate this to my everyday life, as I find myself with a perfect lover, and we both live in different areas of the country. However, we both live within EST. So to see something where I’m able to visualize this with him, makes a connection with me.

BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES
by :Jaskaran Singh - from Vidya Niketan Birla Public School, Pilani. INDIA and Time Project Participant ( www.timeproject.org)
“Sir, Taiwan has been hit by an earth quake, 170 people have died there” said Aryaman Dave, one of my students, with anxiety writ large on his face and a tone of concern in his voice while we were walking towards the school auditorium for the morning assembly.  “Are those students safe? Can we get in touch with them?” Said Aryaman without waiting for my response to his first statement.  “Those students mentioned by Aryaman referred to the students with whom my students had an interaction through videoconferencing as part of celebration of 20th Anniversary of Time Project (a multilingual and intercultural global communications project for elementary and secondary schools, initiated for and developed in cooperation with the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network) on November 27, 2015 and the earthquake in Taiwan happened on 06 Feb 2016.  Though it was a sad news but there was a reason for me to feel pleased also because such interactions of my students with other students across the world were aimed at uniting the youth of different faiths and cultures through dialogue and cultivate a feeling of universal brotherhood and Aryaman’s concern for the safety of the people of Taiwan was a clear indication that the seeds of Global Citizenship were sprouting in the minds and hearts of my students.
Integration of internationalism into the curriculum of schools which is a latest trend in school education is a welcome development. I, being one of the lead members of the Internationalism Committee of my school, have experienced that if put into practice concertedly and effectively, the concept of Global Citizenship can work as a unifying force. Preparing and discussing international issues like the Plight of Refugees, Human Rights, Gender-Based Discrimination and Peace and Reconciliation etc through videoconferencing with their  counterparts from other countries, I always notice my students are not only getting insights into these issues and feel  motivated to contribute to solve these issues but they also develop a feeling of friendship or affinity with the students whom they interact with and ultimately a bond or connect with their countries. I sometimes feel elated that I am helping my school to produce students who will grow up with a vision of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam  embedded in their psyche and that is what we need to overcome many problems afflicting the people around the world. The concept of a borderless world may have utopian connotations but there is no second opinion that the boundaries or the borders present in our minds in the form of prejudices, fanaticism, chauvinism etc can be erased especially when we are in an impressionable age.
It was really a touching gesture on the part of the students of our school (a fully residential) unanimously deciding to celebrate a cracker-less Diwali and donate the money thus saved to CRY (Child Rights and You). The bond or connect also gets manifested when they express their desire to visit refugee camps and other such sites during global tours. Reading and collecting more information about the culture of the countries (on their own) with the students of which they interact through blogging and videoconferencing as part of the Global
Citizenship or Global Competence training which is one of the 21st Century Skills taught by the school in which I work is another development which merits a mention here. It doesn’t take much effort to discern the broadened outlook of the students and a perceptible change in their perspectives who participate in student exchange programmes with the schools of other countries or attend international conferences organized by the Round Square and other such international school organizations.
I personally feel that the Internationalism is  like a modern religion which we must practice alongside our other religions. I have no qualms about calling internationalism a religion because like every religion it teaches peace, harmonious existence, universal brotherhood and inspires youth to strive for a better world. What more do we expect more from a religion?
The most important aspect of the integration of internationalism is the intercultural skills. The intercultural skills are beautifully formulated in the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. CEFR, 2001, p.104). These include, the ability to bring the culture of origin and the foreign culture into relation with each other, cultural sensitivity and the ability to identify and use a variety of strategies to contact those from other cultures, the capacity to fulfill the role of cultural intermediary between one’s own culture and the foreign culture and to deal effectively with intercultural misunderstanding and conflict situations, the ability to overcome stereotyped relationships.
More and more people are becoming aware of the fact that there is interdependence among nations and revolutionary advancements in communication technology have facilitated greater contact among people across the world. It is not a rocket science that local problems are in fact intertwined with wider social processes on international level. The schools can play a very important role in developing planetary citizenship and creating a Global Community.
We, the educators and especially the language teachers can contribute towards a better world by integrating internationalism and global competence to the school curriculum and teach rather instill it among the students with concerted efforts. Let’s embrace internationalism as an integrated part of our teaching and help unite the world by bringing the youth of the world together. Let’s create opportunities for the youth of the world to interact with each other, know each other’s perspective and plan and work for a better world they visualize and aspire to inhabit and inherit.

Reading Response: THE ART WORLD EXPANDS
The reading “The Art World Expands” talks a lot about how the changes of the world affected the art world. The introductions of new mediums such as photography emerged and became more updated with the times. “Photography gained respect in the “high” art world as an important medium in its own right”, '' states the author. They go in to say how much influence it started to have during the 1980’s which grew from when it first made its debut in 1839. The art of fabrication came about as other artists started to experiment with different forms of media as well as mixing and matching different media to create their works. The appearance of video technology became another media that was experimented with. The main question I have with this text is , ‘Why is the emergence of the industrial revolution the such a pinnacle point for experimentation?”.

Time Post Number Four
Tumblr media
This painting used mostly wet on wet techniques again, but this time I expanded this to the background as well. This was made on 10/24, which was actually a quite nice, warm-ish day, which is communicated by the light yellow wash I used to start this piece and the lightness of the pigment on the right side of the tree as opposed to the left. The sun was harsher than in the other days/paintings as well.

Week 10
I started the week with blue (excited) when I noticed that we have two more weeks until Christmas break. My emotion turns into green (neutral) when I’m calm and nothing crazy happens. My emotion turns into orange (sick) when I woke up with a sore throat and a running noses. My emotions turn into purple (sleepy) when I have to wake up for my morning class.
