I've been meaning to translate & share russian musical adaptation of The Man Who Laughs by Novokuznetsk musical theatre "Sedimoe Nebo" ("Seventh Heaven"/"Seventh Sky")
It seems like a tough task because the musical itself is gruesomely boring and I managed to watch it fully only once for that reason, yet I would still love to share some parts I somewhat liked or at least found interesting.
This one is Barkilphedro's aria.
This one is pretty tame but I do like the harpsichord and its promising grandeur (sadly it's not really excalating anywhere and keeps the same melody throughout the whole song). The musical also has another Barkilphedro aria that makes the skin peel off my body in a negative way but I would like to translate it too as a token of affection to my favorite character in the story.
Anyways, amateur translation by your humble servant. English is not my first language so forgive me mistakes, if there's any.
СЛУГА ТРЁХ ГОСПОД (Three masters' servant) Barkilphedro: There's only one thing on Queen Anna's mind right now: How to trample into the dirt her bastard sister? Truly, I have no desire to argue with the queen I will happily join this funny game. To serve the great lordess is more than satisfying; I'm over here and there, I'm aware of all sorts of schemes. My Black journal I keep neat and tidy, And write notes for her in a special section. I am paid handsomely for my loyalty. Me, Barkilphedro. Me, Barkilphedro. Lord David: Barkilpherdo, you're a loyal man of mine. I'm asking you to carefully watch over Josiana. Barkilphedro: Lord David ordered me to watch over Josiana, And, as a man, I'm willing to help him. She clearly acts very strangely: First beckons with caresses, then turns her back. To serve David, I swear, is more than satisfying; I'm over here and there, I'm aware of all sorts of schemes. My black journal I keep neat and tidy, And write notes for him in a special section. I am paid handsomely for my loyalty. Me, Barkilphedro. Me, Barkilphedro. Josiana: I trust you, Barkilphedro. Watch over David. I'm very invested in how he's spending his evenings. Barkilphedro: I'm always willing to serve beautiful Josiana. Ready to crawl on my knees into her warm corner(?). Whisper to her all of the flattering confessions, day and night, Lie to her endlessly, take endless revenge on her! To serve beautiful mistress is more than satisfying; I'm over here and there, I'm aware of all sorts of schemes. My black journal I keep neat and tidy, And write notes for her in a special section. I am paid handsomely for my loyalty. Me, Barkilphedro. Me, Barkilphedro. Troupe: Pretty helpful to know what's in the minds of those close to you, Helpful to watch over them day and night. You've been tasked to do so at least three times already. How can you say no to that? How can you not help? To serve three masters is more than satisfying; You're over here and there, you're aware of all sorts of schemes. And your black journal you keep neat and tidy And write notes in special sections for us all. You're payed well for your royalty, You, Barkilphedro. You, Barkilphedro.
#perfectionism keeps me away from this project yet I don't think anyone would do this beside me (I'm the only one interested enough)#the man who laughs#tmwl#the grinning man#<- let this one be there also#barkilphedro#my translations#musicalposting#mjrdm.txt#musical theatre

rip Jonothon “Chamber” Starsmore you would have loved crying reading/watching Hugo’s The Man Who Laughs
#*or the subsequent silent film#this might be one of the only two posts you can make directly connecting superhero comics and tmwl#the man who laughs#chamber xmen#jonothon starsmore#l’homme qui rit#the Venn diagram of people who understand both parts of this post can’t intersect much#the man who laughs (1928)#I should probably have a personal tag for the silent film

WiP Wednesday - ToM part 28 chapter 7
On the left, part one of "The Memories We Lost" on AO3. On the right, me rewriting it for Tides of Memories, from Julian's pov, with Altheia as the apprentice.
This is what I set out for when I first started ToM. The time has come. (we don't talk about how long it's taken to get here...)
I mean I'm not rewriting the entire thing, that would be madness. Just the parts that are referred to in ToM, basically the key moments in the story and relationship. I'm so hyped for myself.
Let's gooooooo! \o/
And then once I've finished this and Julian has his memories back, I'm on the home stretch to the conclusion of his and Altheia's stories.
... it might be a long home stretch, mind.
#the arcana#tides of memories#wip wednesday#I'm screaming but I'm having fun#<- that's a writing tag#<- never has it been truer#having tmwl open side by side is really strange because 1st person pov is so different to write and read#I def prefer 3rd#also I prefer Altheia as the mc :)#also holy shit it was may 2022 when I posted that#time has no meaning anymore i stg#hi I'm talking to myself in the tags

You may remember this post I made at the beginning of the year, about “The Man Who Laughs” being public domain. Well, I looked after my boss’ kids a couple of nights ago, and once I finally convinced them to go to bed, I started to watching it for the first time on their large movie projector! [mild spoilers ahead].

Unfortunately I only managed to watch half an hour of it, because the parents came home (and asked what I’d been watching 😳 Had to explain my weirdness).
I finished it the next day on my own (considerably smaller) TV.

(The format didn’t work too well on my television, some of the picture was missing on both sides, annoyingly).
It was so good! It put me through a lot of stress, because while I’d read that Gwynplaine had a happy ending, I was still so worried something bad would happen to him, Dea, Urus or Homo.
It felt similar to “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, but also very different at the same time. Gwynplaine is the only Universal “monster” character to have been a leading man, and to have not been killed off at the end.
Look at them 😭
I couldn’t help but laugh every time this guy showed up. Look at his goofy face 🤣

It was nice not to feel emotionally destroyed after a tragic movie for once (well, I was a little bit scarred - Gwynplaine had so much inner pain 😖)

x(.)com/jwoosworld/status/1866499015862526273?t=8ciz9eG8A7xH0Eu4-UykFw&s=19 How can he does all of this? Along with TMWL rehearsal, the momentum practice, SMtown practice, studying Korean history, preparing for 2nd album, and a bunch of filming for variety show contents. His time management skill is insane
Link
I would like to know as well. I fear, he has a Time-turner in his possession.
Great news, though. And I'm not even surprised, heh. Who if not Doyoung?.. I knew Doyoung would eventually secretly finish school (he can't go to a Uni without a high school diploma), but never imagined a special major like musical theatre.
So, Do and Woo both attended and participated in the graduation performance, their classmates are posting pictures now.

First of all, what this OP said.
One of the reasons people dream of being famous or becoming this or that and never achieving it is that they don't really want that. Their brain is happy just sitting on a sofa with beer in hand and a tv in front. A burrow to hide, a blanket to keep warm, food in the stomack, entertainment - what else to want? All basic needs are covered. Even sex is substituted with wifus/husbandos for most.
Those people who desperately want something have the will to do it by all means. Even if it means practicing choreos till 5 a.m. and going to school afterwards (Jae's case) or learning 2 new languages (Ten's case). Read about explorers of the past deciding to go and freeze to death in pursue of the dream to be the first in human history to reach the North or the South pole.
Doyoung is also an exeption to the rule. He is a workaholic and needs to do as much as possible, he is hungry for more achievements. He has both mental energy for that and will to push himself. Maybe sometimes to unhealthy lengths, but so far he seems to balance it well and shows improvement on the mental front actually. He also has great memory, which allows him to quickly learn (in shorter time and on the go, with less concentration) and memorise lots of faces (social connections). Do evidently also is very good at shifting his focus, doing lots of tasks in parallel (the way we saw him thinking over his solo album direction during commute). Others would be overwhelmed, it requires a trained brain.
Doyoung is assisted with the time management a lot by the agency. He doesn't need to cook, to plan the route, to order tickets and work on visas, to submit documents, to wait at the bus stops, even to choose clothes. He goes from place to place in the most convenient manner, in a personal van or first class flights. All of this both saves him time (he can learn Japanese words or a musical script in the van, for example, he is not the one driving) and mental energy (he is not making mini-choices, everyday decisions (the act of choosing eats up mental energy a lot), as well as he is not fighting "I don't want to" as much).
Doyoung also gets rewarded on a regular basis. He is given his energy back, he gets confirmation that he is moving in the right direction, that the effort is worth it, the goal is within his reach.
Lastly. Doyoung smartly unites a lot of things. For example, this musical theatre programme thing. Surely, him doing Marie gave him points on multiple subjects without attending any lectures or practices in the school. Maybe the public history exam he took way back also was counted. He will get a diploma that will both work for him as a mucial actor and for any future Uni he will go into.
He wanted to strengthen his friendship with Johnathan. He is doing it while shooting programmes (MukChu and I live alone). He went to Japan for a tv-programme, visited Disney land to unwind a bit, and did a vlog at the same time.
Still, as I said already, he is an exeption. Very few people are capable of pushing themselves this much and being able to shift from one task to a very different one (school->BA duties->musical->concert practice->history channel->meeting withJeno->2nd album) so productively.
That's why we stan!

the last fic I read in 2023 was Sounds Worth It. And it was fantastic. I read it pretty much at midnight and twas fun to have Draco and Hermione celebrating New Year's while I was celebrating it.
Then I saw in your author notes that the Draco characterisation was inspired by another fic. So you bet the first fic of 2024 I read was The Man Who Lived by sebastianL. And that was such a beautiful journey!! The depictions of grief and human connection in that fic are so well done and interesting.
Thanks for your wonderful writing and for pointing me to find another fantastic story!
I love that you went out with my little NYE fic, and started your year off right with the behemoth that is TMWL - a desert island fic for me for sure. Love everything about this. 💚 Thanks for sharing with me!
Sounds Worth It
The Man Who Lived
And @camimoo, if you haven't listened yet, @thirdeye1234 did an amazing podfic of TMWL. Stellar.

Technicolor Familiar Watches Too Many Conrad Veidt Movies Part 1 of ?
Apropos of nothing, I find myself wading around waist deep in Conrad Veidt's filmography, at least the titles I can easily find online.
I've been writing down my mostly brief impressions after each movie, mainly for my own entertainment since I know exactly zero other people who would care lol. I actually created a Mastodon account especially for this purpose, since my primary socials aren't really for this sort of thing. But the character limit on Mastodon is seriously cramping my style, so I'm going to be annoying about this on Tumblr, my self-imposed blog expectations be damned.
I'm not doing plot summaries, but there are spoilers. I'm not watching these movies in any particular order other than what I'm in the mood for on any given day. I'm half trying to keep the thirst levels to a minimum, but no promises; all bets were off after watching A Woman's Face. And tbh, this whole thing has turned into an Emotional Support / Coping Mechanism / Escapism Tactic because hoo boy is my brain bad these days. But be forewarned, I'm not a writer, I'm not a film critic. I just like movies and turns out I like Conrad Veidt a lot too. I'd probably have more and better things to say about a lot of these upon a second or third watch.
So as of late November, I'm 15 films deep with a lot more to go. I'm thinking about splitting this up into multiple posts, maybe like 5ish films/post. Originally I was going to see how many of these movies can I watch before the end of 2023. But I'm just going to keep going until I run out of available titles or I get sick of Connie's face (unlikely).

The Man Who Laughs, 1928 Dir. Paul Leni ⭐4.5/5 Watched mid-Oct, Archive.org Nothing could have prepared me for this. Of course I was aware of TMWL, but more vaguely than I guess I realized. It's really ahead of its time. The production quality is astounding, it's an absolutely beautiful film. The whole cast is pretty great, too. The Duchess? Total smoke show. Homo the Dog? Queer icon. And Connie really swings for the fences emotionally and physically as Gwynplaine. Bear in mind, this is literally only the third Conrad Veidt movie I've ever seen (other than the basic, intro level Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Casablanca), so I was really floored by what he's able to do in this role with the use of really only half his face. There are several wonderfully haunting and heartbreaking visuals and moments throughout the nearly 2 hour runtime that will stay with me long after watching. Half a star got knocked off because the score was a little bombastic and there were one too many clowns for me personally. But those are small complaints for what may otherwise be a pretty perfect film.

Unheimliche Geschichten (Eerie Tales), 1919 Dir. Richard Oswald ⭐3/5 Watched mid-Oct, Archive.org A romp. The version I watched had no soundtrack at all, making for a totally silent viewing experience. The vignette structure and old school effects are fun. I enjoyed seeing Anita Berber in action although maybe I was expecting more because of all the hype surrounding her/her image. But Connie, Anita, and Reinhold Schünzel seem like they had a good time working on this project. "The Black Cat" and "The Suicide Club" were my favorite sections (and I actually watched this when I was in the middle of Netflix's The Fall of the House of Usher, so yay for extra Poe content in the spookiest month). As for Connie Content, what can I say, he's stunning.
The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, 1920 Dir. Robert Wiene ⭐3.5/5 Watched Oct 17, Archive.org I went hard with the silent era when I started this journey. Caligari was my intro to Conrad Veidt almost 15 years ago, and as a lapsed goth art student, I remember being bewitched by his strange and off-putting presence on screen. My rating for this one is kind of low compared to how undoubtedly iconic and important of a film it is. It could have been my mood but upon rewatching, but the story fell a little flat for me. I did like the updated score in the version I watched, and I would love to see this one on the big screen maybe with a live orchestra some day.
Orlacs Hände (The Hands of Orlac), 1924 Dir. Robert Wiene ⭐4/5 Watched Oct 17, Archive.org Loved. It's so horny and bizarre (the scene with the maid crawling on the floor? same, girl, same). And visually the most pre-David Lynch Lynchian-looking movie I've ever seen. The shots that linger on highly stylized, cavernous, empty rooms before a character enters? So David Lynch. I'm also a big fan of the psychological body horror and crime thriller genre mashup. It's got twists, it's got turns. Conrad Veidt's your man if you ever needed a Hand Actor. Like the handsiest Hand Actor who ever had a pair of hands. Someone who could really work those mitts.

A Woman's Face, 1941 Dir. George Cukor ⭐4.5/5 Watched Oct 18, Vudu & TCM Jumping way forward in Connie's career. This movie did things to me. This was, I think, the point of no return. It's extremely underrated, I'm legitimately surprised I'd not heard of it before diving down this rabbit hole. That said, it is strange and pretty spicy for a Hays Code era picture. It's so good, I actually watched it twice (it aired on TCM as a part of their creepy cinema series). Visually beautiful and narratively interesting, if maybe a little long despite the rushed ending. Shout out to Joan Crawford for giving what's probably the best performance of hers, at least that I've seen (Mildred Pierce who?). And then there's nasty, nasty Conrad Veidt. He very nearly steals the movie from Joan, I couldn’t take my eyes off him. He's beautiful, he's TALL, he's scary. Genuinely shocked he doesn't have second billing. But what else can I say about his Torsten Barring that hasn't already been said more eloquently by others? It's such a great character, and I believe he said it was one of his favorites during his entire 100+ film career. A Woman's Face is the only title on this list so far where immediately after watching I wanted to buy the dvd. Ugh, we deserved several more decades of Connie in roles like this.
I'll probably post the next few one day soon, where I finally get into some titles from the 1930s.

Rerunning this poll bc I feel like I have a few more followers these days
Trying this again because I messed up the first post:
*If you don’t use discord but would otherwise be interested do you have any other ideas for fandom community stuff?
Note that this would probably have dedicated spaces for adaptations, so if you’re only interested in the Grinning Man musical or in the 1928 silent film, you may still want to vote yes!

Omg just read tides part 28...so Julian and Altheia knew eachother BEFORE memories we lost??
They did!
I ought to write out the timeline properly (and it's a little fuzzy if I'm honest) but...
So Tides 28 so far is a flashback to 12ish years ago, Altheia took Julian to Vesuvia, they had a fling during the trip and then parted ways, Julian to eventually set up his clinic, and Altheia went back to sea.
(Maybe spoilerish?) One or two years later Altheia had her accident which resulted in her losing her ship and having to stay with her aunt in Vesuvia to recuperate. Then we slide into the 'canon' timeline which is that she met Asra nine years prior to the game's events. If you read the rest of Tides and Memories We Lost you'll know how it went down after that 😊 But Altheia and Julian never met up during that time, for reasons I'll go into at some point, until she joined him at the clinic to be his apprentice!
I've got a little work to do in rewriting the generic mc in TMWL to make Altheia fit, but I'm looking forward to that. Part 28 is shaping up to be loooonnnggg.
Sorry I went off on a little tangent there, thank you for the ask! ❤️

I couldn’t say anything before because Edith Magazine just published their August issue today. And I am now officially... a centerfold?!?! Strange tastes in faces, my friends, but it is indeed the way of things. (It was a six-page feature!) And even more delightful, “The Man Who Laughs” is my feature’s title which only continues to enable my (very likely unhealthy) penchant for the story. All the props to my friend Christopher of Alexander Photography who made me look so much edgier and badass than the major nerd I am. My Covid fluffiness is apparent (I go to hell if I’m not dancing apparently), but small fry in the overall scheme of things.
Several notes: 1) I don’t hate these. At all. 2) Arms are weird. 3) I might think it more weird if I didn’t have arms but only because I’m not used to it. 4) I never thought I would ask if my scars were prominent enough.
