“uh … it’s a bit girly … no?” javier examines himself in the reflection of his knife’s blade, looking this-a way and that, the dark blue of a large silken bow now peeking sheepishly around his neck as it sits gently in his hair. next to him, kieran clams up a smidge, hands still held close to his chest nearby his completed ribbon project on javier’s head. he finds it in himself to wring his hands a time or two rather than immediately undo his work as javier seems to continue to formulate his final opinion. “you … think so? look at me?” kieran asks, politely as a mouse. javier easily complies, turns at his hips and looks behind, up at kieran where he sits on the stump above him.
kieran, as he peers over, can’t help the meadow of flush that blooms over his neck, then his ears, then his nose and his cheeks. he can tell javier is deep in thought by the look on his face, mouth twisted just a might sideways, cocking his mustache awry, and the deep wrinkle sat between his brows. the ribbon he used matches javier’s vest perfectly, and the shine of the silk warms bright in the sun, just like every piece of jewelry and metal javier has adorned himself with. with this ribbon, javier’s hair sits lower on his head, ponytail draped down his nape and more hair framing his face in his bangs. kieran resists an urge to tuck one side back behind his ear.
kieran thinks that he looks like a painting, a muse, a love letter so heartbreakingly full of adoration that the only language it could be written in is bright swipes of pigment on a canvas. as he makes eye contact with the silk squinting around the red of a necktie, he thinks that javier may be right, if ‘girly’ could sum up ’poetry written in effeminate reverence’.
kieran always did think women made better art, wrote better books- found a better way to love. softer. warmer. prettier. like javier.
the world sounds like it’s underwater.
“i think … it’s very pretty. it suits you real well.”
earnest to a fault, the look in kieran’s eye dances gingerly with javier’s internal voice. it dips and sways him, and javier, despite his instinct, finds himself charmed by its rhythm.
“-b-but! i could take it out! if you don’t-“ javier looks down at himself in his knife again, the sunlight filtered through the leaves glinting a yellow green around his dark features, and kieran hands him patience on a silver platter. a rich blue makes friends with bright green quite easy, javier thinks. this is how he must look through kieran’s mossy lens.
“pretty … yes. you know, i think you may be right. i’ll keep it. gracias.”
#oizy asked me at some point to write about the exchange that happens when kieran first gives javier his first big ribbon … i think#and i’ve been thinking about it this whole time :’] and i’ve been wanting to write them for a long while now too so i thought it would be fu#n to just jot it down :’] … this could have been written better but i fear if i don’t post it now i never will LOL i’ll just overthink it 🥲#i have a few more writing drafts started that i hope i can finish soon …. writing is very fun for me ! i just … run out of steam easy and th#en never pick drafts up again 💔💔💔 i’m kinda the worst creater ever LOL#anyway ! yeah i think javier initially was very put off by it but kieran with all of his autismo wisdom simply does not gaf about gender#gender* roles. he just thinks ribbons and bows are so pretty and javier walks around like a little peacock so kieran thinks that he (literal#ly) deserves a big pretty bow on top !#this is still in horseshoe overlook actually. right before they move though. in the cusp of that time where javier begins to get curious abo#ut kieran and kieran begins to feel just a teeny weeny bit braver when it comes to … having a personality around the other gang members LOL#and at this point kieran’s attraction to javier (at the very least physically) has been fully realized. javier never really did like him (or#so he thought) but he’s left him completely alone for the past month or so and so kieran thinks he’s got enough emotional berth to try and#give him a gift. that’s why they’re so awkward and weird lowkey LOL javier is still a bit spiteful but i think towards the end of horseshoe#he has moments where he’s able to be very very calm about kieran and try to empathize with him. especially in the moments where kieran is so#kind to him that javier simply cannot find it in himself to think that it’s an act of some sort. it was immediately after this that javier w#ent hunting and gutted a rabbit so hard on accident that he ruined the meat by puncturing the intestines. he confuses even himself sometimes#pining ! but in a really weird and subtle and calm way ! i do think they have their moments where it’s like a wildfire in them and they just#get completely burnt up by it … but sometimes they also pine like the wax and wane of the ocean lapping at the bank. easy. calm. warm. love#unrealized yet but ever-present still. they carry the weight of love in their hearts around every day. these two are burdened by it. but whe#n they are together … this weight … the pits in their stomachs that they cannot rid themselves of … when they are together all of the sudden#it seems as though the world around them slows down. and it’s easy to feel … calm. like they belong there. like they’re okay and safe and ..#free.#anyway. i like them a normal amount :) and sometimes their dynamic is really complicated to me ! and they contradict themselves sometimes !#and that is really fun to me !!!#rdr2#red dead redemption 2#kieran duffy#javier escuella#javieran#hero more like shakespeare

“Chief.” Soonyoung took a worried step forward, hand slipping out from yours. “Is everything okay?”
“If you’re here it's either not serious enough or it's too serious.” Minghao frowned at Seungcheol, crossing his arms. “My guess is the former.”
“The camp is under attack.” Seungcheol sighed, running his hands through his hair like he was embarrassed. “Of….”
“Of what?”
“O-of geese.”
“Geese??” Soonyoung looked at him stupidly. “Like plural of goose, geese?”
“What other kind of geese do you know, you dumbass.” Seungcheol rolled his eyes.
“I don't know. The kind of geese I know don’t attack human establishments??”
“It’s obviously some elaborate prank by the children of Nemesis, considering it's their companion.” Muttering, Seungcheol stuffed his hand in his pockets. “Those winged brats are just wreaking havoc everywhere - they’ve broken all of the farm's tools, they’ve made a mess of the dining hall, they’ve shat all over the houses-” Both boys groaned. “-it's a catastrophe.”
“Are we sure it’s not Jeonghan?” Soonyoung narrowed his eyes. “We all know how much he enjoys stuff like this….”
“Jeonghan also loves to watch the consequences of his very well planned antics.” Seungcheol scoffed. “And he’s not at camp - he said he was going to the city for….. something, I don’t know but no, it’s not him.”
“If it's not him then how did these birds enter camp at night?” Minghao raised his eyebrows confused. “They shouldn’t have been able to pass Wonwoo’s nighttime defenses.”
“He says they might have sneaked in during the shift handover. Apparently Hansol and the hounds were the only ones patrolling when he was settling up because Jihoon was busy elsewhere.” Seungcheol looked straight at you, almost accusatorily.
What the hell, how was this your fault?
“There’s no need to look at her like that.” Minghao took a step forward, half covering you behind his frame. “You should talk to Jihoon about being more responsible with his time.”
“That’s not the point now.” Watching both men glaring at each other, Soonyoung tried to ease the tension. “We should be discussing how we can get rid of those menaces.”
“We've been trying.” Seungcheol groaned. “But neither Jun nor Hansol are able to communicate with them for some reason. It seems like they are some weird mix of domestic and wild.”
“That's strange.” Minghao frowned, lost in thought.
“Something does seem off.” Soonyoung agreed. “Not only have they breached Wonwoo's protection but they're also some sort of unheard half breeds? Two anomalies cannot be a coincidence.”
“Moreover, it's not like the children of Nemesis to prank.” Minghao frowned, staring at the ground. “Pettiness isn't their nature.”
“What other reason could they have to do this?” Seungcheol crossed his arms, muscles tense. “Revenge?”
“Maybe, or it might not even be them.” Sooonyoung looked lost in thought. “Seungkwan and I will speak around with our contacts. I’m sure we can find out something.”
Seungcheol nodded, “In the meantime we need to clear them from camp premises before they cause more destruction.”
“Then why aren't you at camp doing that chief?” Minghao narrowed his eyes at the leader. “Why is it that you're here, like there's more important things to worry about?”
You didn’t have to look to tell that Minghao was glancing at you over his shoulder.
Soonyoung didn't seem to think his presence was suspicious. “He's the Son of Zeus, Hao. Geese and him don't really go well together.”
You vaguely recalled Jihoon telling you something in the Iliad about Zeus, geese and the Helen of Troy.
“Is that it?” Minghao raised his eyebrow amused. “Big ol’ chief afraid of some feathered friends?”
“I’m here for Soonyoung.” Seungcheol gritted between his teeth. “And I asked for the message of the attack to be passed to him alone.”
Your eyes followed Soonyoung’s which focused on the group huddled in the corner - a bunch of the most beautiful people you had ever seen, snickering away.
“Fucking Aphrodite’s children.” He muttered knowing all three of you were purposely misled here in the interest of creating a scene.“How can I help, chief?”
“We were wondering if your ability to induce intoxication can calm them down so they can be captured?” He looked unsure. “Hansol and Jihoon were ready to shoot down the birds but if this really is a prank, we don’t want to harm their animals and seek trouble with the other camps.”
“Even though this might be their fault?”
“We have enough on our plate this season, Soonyoung.” It was very apparent that Seungcheol was trying his best not to meet your eye. “The last thing we need is more camps to be against us.”
Soonyoung nodded like he understood. “We should leave then but Chan is too drunk to drive-”
“I got here on Wonwoo’s bike.” Seungcheol waved his hand, dismissing the younger one’s concern. “You and I can head back first and the rest of the team…...Minghao, are you sober?”
The man in question nodded.
“Good, gather everyone immediately and make sure they reach camp safely, especially….”
Seungcheol glanced at you, his expression a lot softer but the anger you felt for him had not changed.
“I’m not leaving yet.” You spoke up for the first time, earning the leader’s confused look. “I don't want to.”
“Are you drunk?”
“And what if I am?”
“It’s a Thursday night Y/n, we have training tomorrow morning-”
“Ugh I don’t care.” You grabbed a canned cocktail from the nearby table and popped it open, ignoring Soonyoung’s widened eyes. “Your camp, your rules, whatever the hell you’ve got going on, I don’t care for it Cheol- oh sorry, Seungcheol.” You corrected yourself. “I will leave this party whenever I feel like I want to leave this party.”
“Stop being a child.” Seungcheol was clearly holding back his anger. “There’s enough going on back at camp now for you to-”
“Exactly, go deal with it chief. I’m sure you’ll all fare better without the “weak link” around.”
“Y/n I…” He sighed, watching you drink in big gulps. “First of all, you shouldn’t be drinking that-”
“Can someone please explain to this man that I’m not going to listen to him.”
“Cheol.” Minghao looked pointedly at his leader who was on the verge of snapping. “I’ll bring everyone back to camp safely…. everyone.” He emphasized again. “You and Kwon should get going now.”
“Yeah.” Soonyoung nodded before turning to you and grabbing the bottom ends of Minghao’s jacket, aligning them as his voice fell to a whisper. “Y/n, that’s a sex potion too.”
Eyes popping out, you nearly spat out your drink. “I thought it was just the beer??” He nodded. “Yeah, so did everyone, hence the improvisation.” He pulled the zip up, adjusting the jacket on your shoulders. “Take care sweetie.”
You nodded, eyes briefly meeting Seungcheol over Soonyoung’s shoulder. He looked…..indifferent as he stared back.
“Come on Kwon.” He muttered, turning away as the Soonyoung dropped a kiss on your forehead before taking a step back and jogging away to catch up with his leader. You only let out a breath as their figures disappeared in the rain that only got heavier.
Before you knew it, a familiar feeling began licking up your spine, warmth spreading all over your being just like it had earlier. As you slowly turned to Minghao, embarrassed to meet his eye, he straight up shook his head, looking amused.
“Nah uh. Ignorance I can understand but stupidity?” He scoffed. “That's your problem.”
“Minghao-”
“Fight it Y/n.” He grabbed a macaroon, stuffing it in his mouth as he began to walk away from you. “Fight it.”
Tumblr media
Unlike Seungcheol’s house, the room you woke up in did not have sunlight streaming in.
Stretching on the large king size bed, you glanced at the now empty space beside you - the man who had given you company last night was no longer there and rightfully so considering it was way past training hours.
Ignoring the pain in your head, you swung your feet off the mattress, glancing out the window. The view is much nicer than Seungcheol’s house - there all you could see were endless trees and hills but here you could see much more of the camp, particularly the common cabin, where everyone was slowly walking towards after hitting the showers. Slightly annoyed and very bothered that yesterday’s events were about to repeat, you sighed, heading down the stairs, making your way to the dining hall. Unlike yesterday though, no one spared a glance at you as you walked in.
You could tell they were all tired - you saw much of the aftermath of the geese ambush as you returned to camp late last night. Considering everything looked normal today, you figured the boys must have spent all night cleaning up before reporting to train in the wee hours of the morning.
“Y/n,” Mingyu’s voice called out to you from behind as you turned to him. “You left this in my workshop last night….”
As you glanced at the jacket in his outstretched hand, the eyes of the other boys flickered between the two of you.
“That's mine.’ Minghao walked up, swooping his garment in his hands as the attention of the room shifted to him. You gulped as he walked away from the hall wordlessly.
You figured you should say something considering the silence was only getting worse, maybe apologise for missing training yet again but before you could say it, Seungcheol got up and walked right past you without saying a word.
Lips parted, you watched him leave once more, refusing to say anything, refusing to listen to you, simply being stubborn like he always was.
Fine, if he was going to be a bitch, so were you. Following his suit, you walked out of the hall in the opposite direction, leaving everyone inside baffled.
Tumblr media
The heat of the water just wasn’t comforting.
You knew it was hot, there was steam all around, the tiles of the shower were covered in condensation and designs you had mindlessly traced with your finger. But rather than scalding your skin off, the boiling hot water just felt like a tickle. Annoyed, you turned off the pouring water and grabbed the towel, wrapping it around your body, tucking it in front of your chest. As you ran your hand through your wet hair, you looked at yourself in the mirror.
Water was dripping from the wet strands, running down the many darkening, reddish purple marks on your neck and shoulder. You knew they would get darker as days passed but you didn’t expect them to look so bruised up already. Running your finger across them you sighed - last night was a horrible mistake. Sure you were under the influence of some messed up concoction but sleeping with more than one member of the camp was ridiculous to say the least.
What was more burdensome was the idea that maybe there was more than the concoction involved…. Soonyoung had broken up with his girlfriend because of you but neither he nor you were sure about what exactly he felt for you and Minghao? You had noticed he was generally protective of you since you had joined camp and thought it was just because he was nice, but the way he pulled you away from Soonyoung every time the two of you were a little more intimate? That did not seem very ‘general’.
Shutting your eyes, you tried to push the details of last night out of your mind. Thank god you listened to your trainer when he told you to fight it. Otherwise when you asked Mingyu if you could crash at his place in order to avoid Seungcheol and found yourself sharing his king size bed, maybe you would have allowed yourself to make another mistake. You couldn't make another one so soon.
Tightening the grip of your towel, you turned towards the changing rooms, slightly startled by the figure that just walked in.
Wonwoo - also in his towel, hanging low at his waist, moving as silent as a shadow as he walked towards the showers. You should have felt exposed, more conscious, given you were barely dressed, and covered in innumerable hickies but you didn't feel a thing. Because Wonwoo hadn't spared you a glance. He walked past you like he couldn't care less, like you weren't there.
“What is your problem?”
After days of watching this man behave so unnecessarily indifferent to you, you finally spoke up, mind already disturbed by a hundred and one things.
“Why do you always behave like I don't exist?” You crossed your arms, staring him down. “If you're an introvert, I can understand, Hansol doesn't interact with me much either but at least he doesn't behave like I'm invisible, like he can see right through me-”
“Because I can.” His voice left him deep and cold as he turned to you. “Because I can see right through you.”
You scoffed. “What-”
“Because regardless of what you pretend to be in front of others, I can see the real you. I know things about you that you won't even admit to yourself.”
“What-” You emphasised again. “-can you possibly know?.”
“What can I know?” He raised an eyebrow. “I know you're a loner Y/n. You've been one your whole life. Your biological parents never cared enough about you, you don't have any siblings, you've never bothered to make friends, you've always been alone.” He took a step forward. “Even though it was circumstances that drove you to loneliness, you always told yourself that it was your choice, that you wanted to be alone because it’s easier that way. It’s easier to tell yourself that you chose to distance yourself from everyone rather than admit that you were rejected. You knew you would never be accepted. You knew no matter where you were and what you did, you would never fit in. You knew you were a freak.”
Eyes widening, you stared at his nearing figure.
“But now? Now you're finally in a place where you belong. You are finally with your kind but you're still terrified - you're scared that maybe, this isn’t where you’re meant to be either. You're scared that if you accept these people and they find out what you really are, they'll leave you too. They'll break the heart you've been safeguarding for all these years.”
Your heart was quite literally in your mouth.
“That's why you rebel. That's why you call this place 'camp' and never ‘home’. You say things are hard and you're having trouble adjusting but what you're really trying to do is establish that you always are and always will be an outsider - you’re trying to escape the pain that will come when you're finally abandoned. That is why you'll always look for reasons to leave this camp. You'll never let yourself belong, you'll never let yourself become one of those here. So tell me, why do I have to try and bother with your existence when you’re just looking for the first chance to run?”
And somehow, now you could feel the heat all over. It was uncomfortably coursing through your whole body, burning you inside out in a way that made you want to rip out your skin but you already felt so bare, so naked in front of this man.
But before any words could leave you at all, Wonwoo took a step back and then another till he retreated out of sight and into the showers. It was only when he disappeared that you finally let out the breath you were holding.
Tumblr media
Maybe the more logical thing to do was to dive into the lake before you hit the showers but here you were, stripping into just your inner wear and jumping into the ice cold waters, desperate to cool yourself off. As you submerged yourself further in the waters, you shut your eyes, submerging into the darkness as well.
The fire burning inside you because of Wonwoo's words was just not dying. For the first time ever, it felt like you had truly looked into a mirror because every single word that came out of that man's mouth was true. So, so true.
And he was right when he said you've never admitted these things even to yourself because you were never really one for introspection. It wasn't like you to explore your thoughts, understand your nature, figure out the intentions of your actions. No, none of that.
You were impulsive. You dived head first into things. You made decisions, then considered the consequences. You were reckless, you lived fearlessly, you lived like no one and nothing else mattered.
Because nothing else did matter.
Ever since you were young, you were on your own. You were not even sure when your mother left you, you had no memories of her and your father? The man who was barely ever present, abandoned you 3 days before your 12th birthday. From then your life had been just yours alone. You worked odd jobs to feed yourself, you worked hard to study, you studied harder to work better and life just went on like that. You didn't have many friends to compensate for the solitude either. Making friends was somehow not very easy for you - how were you supposed to explain the shambles of your life to people? How were you supposed to establish any kind of relationship with anyone when the only ones you ever had, walked out on you?
You were better off alone. You were always better off alone.
That was until one incident turned your entire life upside down.
The days leading up to your arrival at camp are still a blur to you. The flames, the masked men, the court, the meeting of dozens of people - it all still felt like a fever dream. But one moment was still very clear in your memory - the moment when you were standing at the shrine of your mother, in front of her statue.
Goddess of the hearth, home and hospitality they said. The old man beside you was going on and on about her. About her powers, about what a wonderful woman she was, about how delighted you'd be to meet her.
You, though, felt like you were stabbed in the heart you had so carefully locked away.
When the masked men revealed the truth of your parentage, when you learnt about your mother, you let that hope in you grow again. You thought maybe with this big secret finally out you’ll finally get to meet her. That she would finally be a part of your life.
That’s why when they gave you a choice at the swearing in ceremony to join camp seventeen or go back to your mortal life, you chose the former. It was for her, it was to be with your mother, it was to finally feel home.
But as you stared at her statue, offering your respects after the ceremony, it was like someone was drowning you in cold water. Nothing about the expression on her face felt remotely homely, nothing about her felt warm and loving to you - she did not feel like a mother. Rather she felt cold, distant and unwelcoming, just like you imagined the woman who abandoned you would look like.
And with time, you realised your fear was right.
Ever since you arrived at camp, all you did was wait. Wait for just one conversation, maybe an explanation, or even just a glimpse. But there was no indication of her. She didn’t drop by the camp, she didn’t respond to your invocation at the temple, she didn't care at all, just like she hadn’t in the last twenty five years.
The pain of being re-abandoned was so strong that, with each passing day, it began to gnaw on your insides. The breaking point was perhaps realising that you were her only progeny yet you didn't matter to her. It was a blow you had refused to accept but one that had most definitely broken you internally. You had uprooted your whole life for her, you made this new world yours but at what cost - daily incessant instructions to train, classes after classes teaching you how to fit in, members continually trying to make you feel at home. You didn’t want this home, you didn’t want these people, you only wanted her.
Wonwoo was right, you were never here to be a part of this camp, it was merely a stepping stone to your final goal. You were indeed looking to run.
But before you could wonder about how Wonwoo knew all these things about you, a hand wrapped around your waist. In a flash it pulled you out and tossed you onto the bank as you launched into a coughing fit, throwing up water.
“What the hell Y/n?” A worried voice patted your back. “What were you thinking?”
In between your fit, you raised your head to meet the sight of a set of extremely well chiseled abs, rivets of water dripping down them. Gulping you cleared your throat and scooted back, suddenly aware that you were very very minimally dressed.
Your saviour Seokmin, looked away from you realising the same as he grabbed the shirt he had tossed into the grass before jumping into the water and handed it to you. Taking it from him, you slipped it on.
“What is wrong with you?”
“What?” You frowned. “I'm fine.”
“You were underwater for so long, I thought you drowned…” Seokmin muttered, pushing his wet hair off his face. “Are you okay?”
“I'm okay.” You mumbled. You weren't but you knew he wasn't referring to your broken heart.
“You looked distressed.” Or maybe he was.
“I just… had some thinking to do.”
“Well underwater isn't the best place for that if I'm being honest.” He chuckled. “Unless you're Poseidon's child.”
“What, only you have a claim on water?”
“No, only we can breathe underwater.”  He somehow looked embarrassed. “Though I was well into my teens before I discovered that.”
“What do you mean?”
“I was terrified of water as a child, wouldn't go near it.” He laughed. “Ironic for the Son of the Sea right?”
You scoffed. “A little.”
“When my aura got stronger, my father found me and helped me get habituated to the waters, that's how I-”
“Your father?” You gulped, knowing the answer even as you asked him. “Your father as in Poseidon? Poseidon helped you?”
Seokmin nodded like it was obvious. “I was so scared of any kind of water body, he would lure me in with my favourite snacks. As I got older, I stopped falling for such tricks so he took me to Olympus and made sure I was personally trained in those olympic size pools-”
“Fucking hell.” You got to your feet, much to Seokmin's confusion, tripping as you did.
“Y/n careful!” He quickly got up, catching you before you hit the ground again. “Are you okay-”
“No.” You shook your head.“I am not.”
And with that you walked away from there, body alight with a different kind of fire now. You needed to find someone immediately.
Tumblr media
“Jihoon, we need to talk.”
As you slammed the door of Jihoon’s house open, you were met with silence.
This was the first time you were in his residence and somehow if you had to picture how his home looked, it was nowhere close to this. You assumed the son of the Sun would prefer whites or lighter colours but most of the minimal furniture in his house was a dark black, standing out starkly in the small room. But right now wasn't the time for you to ponder about his interiors, there were more important things you needed to talk to him about.
Turning on your heel, you shut the door behind you, wandering into this backyard instead. You knew Jihoon had his own personal gym somewhere there and if Soonyoung was right about his tendency to work out, it was highly likely you would find him there.
“Hi Cow.” You waved at the half asleep animal under the tree, lazily blinking at you. As though it read your mind, it pointed its head towards the small path on the side before tucking its head between its legs and dozing off. You followed its directions, reaching a large tinted greenhouse and when you opened the door you were greeted by two dozen gym equipment. In the middle of it all was the man you were looking for, his bare back facing you as he hung off a bar, pulling himself up with way too much ease.
“Y/n.” Well it was no surprise he recognised you without even a glance. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Why has everyone on camp decided to be shirtless today?” You mumbled, walking in, looking around.
Chuckling, Jihoon jumped off, turning to you as he landed. Eyes running down your body, he cocked his head. “Is that why you chose to go bottomless instead?”
And it was only then that you realized you didn't fully dress yourself before storming away from the lake in just Seokmin's shirt.
“I was hot.” You shrugged, pulling down the shirt.
“Hot you are.” He mumbled, sitting down on the bench, grabbing a pair of dumbells. “There's way too much heat in your body, which means you're either mad or ovulating and I'm not sure how I can help with either.”
“The former.” You rolled your eyes. “And only you can help with it.”
“Go on.” He sighed, curling the weights, his biceps bulging with every move. Tearing your eyes away, you cleared your throat.
“I want to meet my mother.”
“Which one?”
“Hestia.” You crossed your arms. “I have something to ask her.”
“I'm still missing the part where I can help.”
“You said you'll teach me how to reach out to her.”
“I did.” He grunted, focusing on his workout. “And I will, every Thursday at 4-”
You grabbed the dumbbell with surprising ease and put them down before leaning over the man before you, expression threatening.
“Lee Jihoon, I swear to god, if you don't help me right now…”
Your words trailed away as his eyes shifted down to your neck, the shirt no longer hiding the bruises that were littered all over it. You glanced down before straightening yourself, taking a step back. Jihoon got up, pushing his hair back, eyes fixed on you.
“I just…” You sighed. “I just want to meet her once.”
“Then go to the camp temple and invoke her presence.”
“I have, everyday. She doesn’t respond.”
“Then there’s no way I can help you Y/n.” He grabbed his towel, wiping the sweat off his arms. “One can only meet Gods if they wish to meet you and I think your mother has made her wishes very clear.”
“I don’t care what she wishes.” You spoke between gritted teeth. “And you said if I played my cards right, my mother would come looking for me.”
“I also said it would take years of training to become worthy of that.”
“I don't have years, Jihoon. I want to meet her as soon as I can.”
“And why the newfound urgency?” He frowned. “What changed overnight?”
Wonwoo.
“Seokmin said his father taught him to swim, that as a child he took him to Olympus.”
“So?”
“So how come my mother never cared, Jihoon? Why is it that she still doesn't?”
“I already told you-”
“I don't buy that.” You shook your head. “How can a mother be ashamed of having a child? Of her only child?”
“You'd be surprised.” Jihoon looked at you pitably. “Gods aren't like humans.”
“Then let her say that to me.” You took a deep breath. “Let her give me that closure so I can stop losing my mind over this. I just want one meeting with her please, is there really no way?”
“There is one.” He hummed, crossing his arms, his pecs bulging behind them.
“And what is that?”
“By doing a sacrifice.”
“Sac-sacrifice?” You looked at him shocked. “Like those cult stuff?”
Jihoon rolled his eyes, forgetting just how little you knew about this world. “Sacrifice is an age-old tradition made by our ancestors to please the gods, to gain their favours.” He leaned against the treadmill, slipping into his professor role, just like he had yesterday. “At times of droughts, they used to call on Zeus for rains. When crops were ravaged by pests, Demeter was the one to turn to. When they were at war, Ares was their savior. But,” He sighed. “calling upon a god was not so easy - it required time and perseverance and procedure-”
“What kind of procedure?”
“It was insanely complex.” Reaching for his bottle, Jihoon began walking out of the greenhouse, you following closely behind. “First, men would have to climb to the top of mount Olympus to get holy fire, then they would gather items for sacrifice. Every god has a set of items that they just cannot refuse. Dionysus loves his gemstones, Poseidon will do anything for seasalt. Artemis is harder to please, she likes a very specific kind of wildflower. If one offered enough of these to please the gods, then they would appear and were obliged to extend one favour in exchange. But ‘enough’ was where the problem lied.” As he bent down to pet Cow, you stared far off at the horizon, lost in thought.  ”The Gods were incredibly difficult to satisfy, it took large amounts for anything to be ‘enough’ for them. There were demigods who had spent ages trying to invoke them, even losing their minds in the attempts.”
“That’s degenerate.” You frowned, as he stopped again, this time to grab a bunch of herbs from the wall of his house.
“It was.” He began plucking the leaves, grabbing handfuls. “Eventually, when the Oracle of Delphi was made in charge of the Demigods, things changed. Any demigod who wished to do a sacrifice had to obtain a scroll from her - the Scroll of Sacrifice. A piece of paper that would explicitly state just one thing that the gods wanted in exchange for a favour.”
Pushing the nearby door open, he stepped in.
“So you’re saying,” You followed him into his house. “-the only way for me is to go to the oracle, get a scroll, sacrifice whatever is needed and then in exchange I can earn her favour and make her answer my questions?”
“Theoretically yes, but in reality,” He shook his head, opening yet another door and walking in. “it won’t be that easy.”
“Why not?”
“Delphi only hands scrolls to very few demigods, ones she deems worthy and even if she does, they're incredibly difficult - the sacrifice demanded in exchange is almost always impossible to let go.”
“How hard can it be?” You frowned. “What kind of sacrifices do they ask for?”
Jihoon sighed, the incessant questions finally getting to him. “You do know your weekly classes are for exactly such information right?”
“But I want to know right now.”
“Can I at least tell you without having you stare at me getting dressed?”
Oh.
Apparently you had walked behind him straight into his dressing room.
Muttering an apology, you stepped out as he shut the door behind you.
“So,” You half spun on the balls of your foot. “You were saying?”
Another one of Jihoon’s sighs reached you before his voice. “The Gods are not fond of being obliged to hand out favours - that's why they make sacrifices nearly impossible. I heard Apollo asked for a demigod’s sight and the boy fell to his death before he could even ask for what he wanted. Aphrodite made one of her own children give up her ability to love…..  it drove her to insanity. And one of those who prayed to Zeus has been chained to a rock on an abandoned island for nearly twelve years and he still has five more years to go. There are endless stories like this Y/n and each of them will only tell you not to opt for such madness.” He opened the door, now fully dressed, a pair of shorts in his hand. “Here.”
You took it from him, looking a little stumped. “Please wear them Y/n. I can barely look at you…” He muttered walking away again and you quickly slipped on the pair that was just a little too big for you. Following him past a room full of what seemed like musical instruments, you walked into a small pantry.
“What about Hestia?” You gulped, images of her cold face flashing before you. “What has she asked in exchange?”
“Honestly, I don’t know.” He threw the herbs he had gathered earlier into a motor. “I’ve never heard of anyone who’s really seeked her favour.”
You scoffed. “Of course not, what would they ask her help for? Light up their fireplace?”
Jihoon looked up from the paste he was crushing, slightly miffed. “Your mother is no minor goddess Y/n. She's the caretaker, the protector. Hestia is worshiped in every place called home.”
“How ironic.” You smiled sadly. “Her own daughter has never had a home.”
“Unfortunately, no god considers it their responsibility to take care of their bastard children.” He looked pointedly at the counter. “Sit.”
“Why?”
“Just sit Y/n.”
“But why?”
Sighing, Jihoon rolled his eyes and grabbed you by the waist, hoisting you onto the counter effortlessly as you bit back a scream. As though nothing happened, he continued to do whatever it was he was doing while you tried to calm your uncharacteristically racing heart.
“It's also unfair to blame Hestia for not having a home when your mortal parents were the one who were supposed to care for you.”
“I know.” You muttered looking down at your fiddling fingers. “This may sound insane but finding Hestia might be easier than finding my mortal parents…. I don't know a thing about them.”
“I know someone on camp who can help-”
“But I don't want to find them….yet. I don't know what to ask them.” You looked up as Jihoon pulled out a ladder from the side and began climbing it, reaching for something on the higher shelves. “I’m not prepared to find out if they know the kind of monster I am.”
“Why would you say that?” He looked at you over his shoulder, frowning. “You don’t even know what your powers are, right?”
You gulped, staring at the floor, mind racing back to a conversation last night........
“Try not to touch anything.” Mingyu warned as you strolled along his workshop in the faint light of the moonlight. “I’m not really sure if any of these are still hot. I don’t really…. feel heat.”
As if you did.
Hanging out with Mingyu wasn’t really on your cards today. After Minghao had left you to deal with your little problem on your own, you had silently made your way out of the house and down the street, searching for a pharmacy. It must’ve been a good twenty minute unsuccessful walk before Mingyu, who was driving around on his bike looking for you, spotted you. You told him you were looking to buy some pills for a headache so he offered to drive you to the nearest store. He didn’t need to know what you really needed was some plan B. After you had procured what you wanted and he started heading back to camp, you told him to take the longest route possible. While he obliged, you wrapped your arms around his waist and drifted off, not wanting to think about all that was plaguing your mind. Not wanting to think about Seungcheol.
But he’s the first thought on your mind the moment the bike halted at the camp gate. You didn’t want to see him, not now. Mingyu was generous enough to agree when you muttered wanting to take up his offer to crash in his residence. He didn’t question the change of heart, instead he carefully walked you through his workshop, bringing you to the stairs on the other side, leading you up to his house. You though are far too enthralled to follow him.
“You’ve got quite the space here.” You pursed your lips impressed, stripping out of the jacket as he smiled proudly. “Must never be boring.”
“It isn’t.” He admitted. “Making weapons doesn’t take me too long, leaves a lot of time on my hands for other experiments and endeavors.”
“Such as?”
“I like creating little automations.” He shrugged. “Machinery that allows me to be creative and makes life easier. Like the one that's currently out there chopping up wood, for your house.”
“Oh.” You raised your eyebrows looking around. “What else have you made?”
“Too many to remember.” He laughed. “But my best creation is probably my bike. It took months of trial and error. Couldn't have done it without my best buddy.”
“Wonwoo?” You had noticed the two were significantly closer than the rest. There was definitely some story there.
Mingyu laughed. “Yes Wonwoo is the best but no, I'm talking about that little guy.”
He pointed behind you and you turned, finding yourself about 500 meters away from a not so little three headed dog, snarling at you with all three of its mouths, drooling leaking from the edges. You took a careful step back and another, crashing into the chest of Mingyu who had sneaked up to you.
“What is that?” You whispered, voice shaking just a bit.
“That’s Cerberus, my pet.”
“That’s a pet?!”
“It’s Wonwoo’s actually….. But yes, he’s a pet and he’s really friendly, don’t worry.”
“Huh.” You breathed, not believing his words but only relieved cause you noticed he was chained. “And he helps you with your experiments?”
Mingyu nodded, steering you away from there, walking you toward his house once more. “Cerberus is a very powerful creature - he’s immensely strong, uncharacteristically intelligent and most importantly, he’s my fire source.”
“Fire source?”
“The most important tool for a blacksmith like me is the flame - you see those.” He pointed at big cave shaped structures lined neatly on the edge. “Forging presses like that require fires that cannot be ignited by tiny matchsticks. It takes a powerful source to work them, like Cerberus.”
You tensed, just a little. “So Cerberus can create fire?”
“He breathes fire.” Mingyu clarified. “Cerberus is from the Underworld, like most mysteries in our world. So yeah, he is one of the few creatures that can create fire.”
“C-can’t you?” You scratched the back of your head, trying to seem casual. “You said you don’t feel heat so can’t you… make fire too?”
“Don’t be silly Y/n.” Mingyu scoffed. “Fire is one of the five natural elements. Even the gods, your mother included, can only control fire, not create it.”
You were right. Even here you were a freak, even here you didn’t fit in.
None of Mingyu’s excited explanations about the various projects he was working on went into your head. There was only one thing you could think about - You didn’t belong here and you needed to leave before everyone realised that.
“...and that’s why I don’t have a guest bedroom but don’t worry, my bed is king sized.” Mingyu leaned against the stairs with a small smirk dancing on his face. “Though I can’t promise I can keep my hands to myself.”
You rolled your eyes, pushing him to lead the way up. The only thing that gave you comfort as he laughed was the knowledge that if you burned, Mingyu was perhaps the only one who couldn’t hurt with your fire......
“Y/n.” Jihoon hopped off the ladder looking at you quizzically. “Where are you lost?”
“I….” You cleared your throat. “I just meant, I don’t know, what if my mortal parents are aware of any kind of powers I might have? What if… that’s what kept them away from me?”
“Then that’s all the more reason you have to find them.” Jihoon shrugged. “It would help us-”
“No.” You firmly shook your head. “Just…let me just talk to Hestia first, everything else can wait.”
“As you wish.” He held up the bowl of whatever concoction he was mixing, a green paste staring at you. “In the meantime…”
“What is that?”
“It's my special ointment for bruises. Makes any and all scars and wounds disappear.”
“I’m not hurt….” Your voice faded away as Jihoon’s eyes landed on the red, purple and blue trail of hickies on your neck.
“Are you sure you want to go around parading the evidence of your threesome last night?”
“I’m not trying to…how do you even know it was a threesome?”
“Those are clearly marked by two different men.”
You rolled your eyes. “Is this another one of your body reading tricks?”
“Yes but anyone who knows you were at your first Aphrodite rager last night will be able to guess that much.” Jihoon shrugged, standing right before you. “In fact, three is a rather small number there, most scenes tend to involve a minimum of five people.”
You felt your jaw hang as Jihoon looked amused.
“So do you want it gone or not?”
“Why?” You cleared your throat. “You think I should hide all this in case the other boys make assumptions like yours? That I ought to have some shame?”
“Not shame, I thought you might appreciate some privacy.” He shrugged. “Given there’s someone who you have been particularly wary of these days.”
Seungcheol.
How did this man know everything?
Sighing, you gripped the edges of Seokmin's shirt and pulled it over your head, baring your neck to the man before you. Trying not to smile, Jihoon slotted himself between your dangling legs, pushed the hair off your shoulder, gently tending to your bruises.
“It might sting.” He warned right on time as you grabbed his bicep with your free hand, feeling pain shooting up your nerves as the cold ointment touched your skin.
“Breathe.” He instructed, softly running his fingers along your collarbone. “It’ll pass.”
You figured listening to the expert might be better so you did, trying your best to ignore the intimate proximity between the two of you.
“While we are at it,” You looked away as he blew on your wounds, cold wind caressing it. “Do you also have something for potential STDs or…. You know, ensuring our kind doesn’t replicate?”
Jihoon chuckled. “Again, demigods don’t get sick Y/n, STDs don’t mean anything to us and we don’t ‘replicate’ either so there’s really nothing to worry about.”
Suddenly, every cell in your body stopped functioning. “What do you mean?”
Jihoon blinked at you like he was only just realising what he said. “Uh…. Demigods are barren Y/n, we…. cannot have children.”
Though you were sitting it felt like the ground had been pulled from under your feet. Like everything around you had stopped. Like everything had ended.
“Y/n are you okay?”
How could you be? You just learnt that you could never have children, that you could never be a mother. All your life you didn’t have a family but now? Being a demigod had robbed you of your chance to ever have one in the future. You wanted to peel that part away, rip it and throw it somewhere far away, get rid of this side of you that had done nothing but make everything worse.
Jihoon seemed to have understood the storm inside you. Or felt it. He was quiet as he grabbed a washcloth and slowly wiped away the ointment, the bruises beneath it starting to look a lot lighter already. As the sting ebbed away, the pain in your heart felt more apparent, coursing through you, hurting everywhere.
At that moment your eyes trailed over the soft and sharp features of his face burrowed in concentration, your admiration for it overpowering every other thought.
That’s it. That’s what you needed again. A distraction.
Now that his job was done, Jihoon tried to move away but your grip on his arm was like a vice. He glanced at it then at you with a raised eyebrow.
“So you're telling me-” You cocked your head at him. “-even though I let two men cum inside me yesterday and if my prediction is right, another will get his turn today - I'm not at the potential risk of anything?”
Jihoon raised his eyebrow. “No you're not but pray tell, since when did the daughter of Hestia dabble in predictions? I thought that was in the hands of Apollo's prodigy.”
“It is.” You ran your hand down his arm, feeling every ridge of muscle under your touch, voice leaving you in a whisper. “The possibility of my prediction coming true or not is in your hands really.”
Jihoon’s eyes darkened as your tongue darted out to lick your lower lip slowly. Before you knew it, his hands gripped the thickness of your thighs and with a quick jerk he pulled you closer to him, your legs wrapping around his waist. Jihoon looked up at you and you down at him, breaths mingling in anticipation.
“I know what you're doing Y/n and I know why you're doing this.” He spoke ever so softly. “But I'm not a distraction kind of guy so if there's ever a time you really want me, then you'll have me.”
With that he pulled you off the counter and let you lower your legs on to the floor, looking away. Given the kind of tension and the comfort you had grown to have with him and most importantly how unbelievably hard he was, his length right below your ass, you didn't think he'd say no. It was fair, he was allowed to. It wasn't his fault you were looking to jump any given person just to take your mind off things.
Nodding, and mumbling a soft thanks for the ointment, you grabbed your shirt and walked past him, only stopping by the corridor to return what was his.
“Sorry.” Muttering you slid off his shorts and placed it on the shelf beside you.
Jihoon surprisingly let out a soft groan. You thought it was because you were suddenly minimally dressed but you noticed his eyes were gazing between your legs, on the wet spot of your underwear. You tried to press your legs closer, suddenly feeling very exposed but all it does is darken the spot, making things worse.
“Fucking hell.” Jihoon muttered and in a flash you were pushed up against the wall, trapped between it and him, caged by his arms on either side. “I'm only just a man Y/n.”
Your eyes flickered down to his pants, the outline of his hard on starkly visible. “Uh huh.”
“Do you still want this?”
You cocked your head, hand running down his chest and over the tent in his pants as you smirked. “I predicted it.”
“Allow me to make a pre-” His words faltered as you squeezed his length. “-prediction as well.”
“By all means.”
“You're gonna cum three times before I do.”
“Oh really?” You raised your eyebrows and spat into your hand, slipping it past the waistband of his pants, wrapping your hand around his length. “I don't think so.”
“That's….” He half panted, watching your hand do its job, his own hands still against the wall like they were taped to it. “Getting a headstart is cheating.”
“You're slow.”
“I'm savouring.” He smiled, leaning closer. “I'm in good hands and I know you're soaked. It's only a matter of time before you're begging.”
You chuckled softly as though you were amused by his assumption but true to his words, your walls were already fluttering, clenching around nothing as your legs squeezed together. Jihoon, like the master of reading your body that he was, put his hand right in between, cupping you over your underwear, the pressure of his palm on your clit ever so light. From the soft sigh that left your mouth you both knew you were faring far worse than he was - truly, it was brave on your part to challenge him.
“Jihoon….”
He hums in response as the pace of your hand falters.
“Touch me.”
“I am sweetheart.”
“More.” You wrapped your free hand around his wrist, breath shaking and Jihoon allowed you to lead him exactly where you wanted him - past the hem of your panties, right where the wetness was pooling between your legs.
“Good fucking god…” He swore like he didn't expect you to be this drenched. What a funny guy. What did he think was gonna happen when he was this undeniably hot?
You on the other hand expected him to be a tease, to draw this out, to make you beg. But to your complete surprise, he wasted no time in sliding two thick digits in, making you squeeze his length at the sheer stretch of the intrusion.
“Sweetheart, you're gonna kill me.” He muttered, shutting his eyes tight.
You wanted to apologise, you really did but whatever words were leaving your mouth didn't seem to be making any sense. Not when Jihoon was picking up the pace, taking turns pumping, curling and scissoring his fingers inside you. You felt your back arch on its own, head thrown back as an unholy moan left your being. Fuck he was right, you cannot possibly think of anything else now - this man was capable of turning you into a complete wreck before you could even get a moan out of him.
“Your bruises have nearly disappeared.” He noticed with your neck bared to him once again. “It was prettier marked.”
“Mark it then.” You panted, composing yourself, getting back to stroking him again. “Do whatever you want.”
And that's enough to break his resolve, as you felt his fingers slowing down while his teeth ran across the skin of your shoulder. Taking advantage of his momentary fixation, you ran your thumb across his slit, feeling the precum spill onto your fingers. Jihoon groaned, his mouth getting more aggressive on your neck as you gripped his bicep again, sinking your nails into it.
Fuck, there it was.
That tightening in the pits of your being, there it was, slowly climbing as you felt your legs starting to shake and Jihoon smirking against your skin, reading all the signs like he knew your body inside out. Thank god he could because just when you needed it, he slid in another finger and curled them up, reaching that sweet spot that had you instantly snapping, falling apart.
He stilled his movements as you convulsed around his fingers, holding onto him tight but before you could even come down from your high, he started moving again.
“Ji… Jihoon.” You whimpered, chest heaving. “Fuck fuck fuck.”
And before you know it your barely ebbed orgasm blended into a second one and you were practically gushing out into his hand.
“Damn sweetheart.” He smiled at you like he was a little too pleased with himself. “You're an easy one.”
Excuse me?
You could barely get a hold of yourself but that wasn't the most pressing matter - how dare he dismiss you so easily?
Given your mouth was dry you swallowed on nothing, and shoved him back with just a small  push. Jihoon looked at you confused initially, then his eyes widened as you dropped to your knees and he realised what you were up to. But just as your hand reached the waistband of his bottoms and he pushed the hair off your face, more than ready to fuck your mouth, a loud sound rang through the silence of the afternoon.
“Shit.” Jihoon muttered pulling you up. “That's code purple.”
You groaned. “Why are there so many fucking colours?”
Frowning, he threw you your clothes before leading you to a small basin to wash your hands and his. “We need to go. It’s an emergency team meeting.”
As he scurried around grabbing his things, his bow and arrows to be specific, you dressed yourself once again, watching him. Guess neither of your predictions were coming true after all.
Noticing you were still lost in your thoughts, Jihoon sighed and grabbed you by the hand, leading you out of his house and to the dining hall of the common cabin where apparently all team meetings were held.
When the two of you had reached, thankfully only Soonyoung and Seungkwan were there and though their expressions were full of questions, they asked none. Before you knew it, everyone had gathered and whispers going around as they settled in their seats but the moment Seungcheol raised his hand, they died down.
“What's the matter?”
Seungkwan nodded at Soonyoung who stood up, looking around.
“Kwan and I sent some messages out today asking about the geese attack last night.” He shook his head slowly. “It seems no camp is responsible for it.”
Minghao spun the blade in his hand with a frown. “So it wasn't a prank or an act of retribution?”
Seungkwan shook his head. “Considering how we all thought their nature was odd, Hansol connected us to some Hunters of Artemis.” He laid out a map with four red crosses. “They gave us four locations where birds like this were sighted.”
“So this was just like any other animal attack?” Seokmin leaned back, looking relieved.
“I'm afraid not. It may or may not be a coincidence but the Hunters also claim that all four locations have been frequently exhibiting very high energy signals, signals that might belong to…” Seungkwan gulped. “The Chimaera.”
A strange silence descended upon the room as glances were exchanged. You looked at Jihoon questioningly but he looked troubled.
“The fire breather.” Chan let out a low whistle. “It hasn't been heard of in centuries.”
“It seems to be on the move off late.” Hansol tucked the arrows he was polishing into his quiver. “It's hunting.”
“And I think the geese are its agents.” Soonyoung pointed out. “Geese have always been symbols of vigilance and surveillance. Whatever the Chimaera is hunting, I think it's using the birds to trace it. That's why neither Jun nor Hansol could understand them, because they aren't wild or domestic - they're monsters.”
“Chan,.” Seungcheol straightened himself. “Alert Olympus, tell them we need troops-”
“It seems Olympus assigned the hunt to Artemis, ” Seungkwan added. “And you know how the Hunters function. Their goal is to capture the beast, not kill it so they have been taking their time to strategize.”
“Well we can't wait for them to figure things out.” Jeonghan stared at the map on the table, a hundred things running in his mind. “We're going to have to hunt the monster on our own.”
“Us?” Minghao looked around. “Do you even understand how powerful the creature is-”
“Should we just sit back and wait for it to attack the camp then?” Jeonghan raised his eyebrows. “Because whatever it's looking for is here and monsters aren't patient creatures.”
“I know, but-”
“Minghao.” Seungcheol interrupted, warning. “Jeonghan is our strategist, we'll let him decide what's best.”
Minghao nodded begrudgingly as Jeonghan pulled the paper towards himself, Soonyoung handing him a pen.
“We'll split according to our assigned partners.” He began drawing out lines and scribbling names. “Seungkwan and Soonyoung, you two head to the demigod union in the city and alert them, in case we need back up. Minghao and Jun, I want you both here for camp protection, Mingyu and Wonwoo as well…” He looked thoughtful. “If the Chimaera decides to attack the camp in our absence, Cerberus is the only chance we have against it.”
As all four boys nodded, Jeonghan turned to the rest.
“The remaining of us will go to the four locations. Everyone will use an energy reader and find the location of the Chimaera. Once you’ve narrowed down its location, alert the team to gather for a hunt. Any foolishness such as going after the monster on your own will not lead to punishment because you'll already be dead.” He glanced around. “Is that understood?”
Mummers of agreement echoed in the room.
“Jihoon and Hansol, you two head to the one in the south, that's the biggest area but your hounds should help cover it. Joshua and I will head east, Chan and Seokmin will head west and Seungcheol…..” His eyes landed on the leader who was very evidently shaking his head. “Seungcheol and Y/n, you two will head north.”
You looked at Jeonghan in disbelief.
“Han,” Seungcheol spoke before you could say anything. “I don't need a partner, I've always been a lone hunter-”
“That was because we were an odd number of members. But now there's 14 of us so Y/n will go with you-”
“It's a dangerous mission and she's untrained.” Seungcheol spoke between gritted teeth. “She will be better off in camp-”
“She will be safer with our strongest warrior.” Jeonghan argued back. “You cannot always be team leader Cheol, learn to be a team player. Y/n will accompany you.”
“No I won’t.” You shook your head. “I have no interest in being where I am not wanted.”
“Y/n, it's not a choice.” Jeonghan sounded tired. “I'm the strategist and this is an order-”
“I don't care.” You got up, firm about your decision. “I'm not going anywhere with this man.”
And with that you stormed away from there, ignoring the faint voice of Jeonghan who sighed and continued giving instructions.
“We leave tomorrow at daybreak.”
Tumblr media
You stared at the schedule in your hand wondering why on Earth you hadn't looked at it before you stepped into the classroom. Admittedly all your time went in washing up, changing your clothes, grabbing lunch and rushing for your afternoon lesson, but you should have noticed what was in store for today.
Friday - Quest Strategy (Choi Seungcheol, Yoon Jeonghan)
And you didn't want to see either of them right now.
But before you could grab your things and leave the room to make it seem like you were never here in the first place, Jeonghan arrived, standing against the door, watching you pack up.
“You need to stop running away from everything.”
As he walked in, you looked up, rolling your eyes. “And you need to stop interfering in my life.”
“My decisions as strategist aren't personal Y/n, I do what's beneficial for the camp and its members.” He leaned against the board. "Accommodating your individual preference is not a part of my job profile.”
“Okay, that's great, then be prepared for only one of us to come back alive tomorrow.”
Jeonghan rolled his eyes at your dramatic statement. “What happened between the two of you?”
You scoffed at him. As if you were going to tell him.
“Seungcheol has been my comrade since we were teenagers, I know him better than anyone and I know for a fact that he's not the villain you're making him to be.”
“Oh he's not?” You crossed your arms. “Okay then explain why when I was throwing myself onto him for days, he kept avoiding me but the moment I walked away from him, he came chasing? And did the man at least go through with that? No, he decided to leave me hanging yet again and then he behaved like everything that's happening is my fault?” You threw your hands in the air. “No apology, no explanation, he just continued to avoid me and when I finally got him out of my mind, then he decided he wanted to talk to me? I didn't want to, but he couldn't even respect my space and ended up coming to the party and….”
“And?” Jeonghan looked curiously.
“And I think he knows that I slept with Soonyoung….” You didn't meet Jeonghan’s eyes. “and Minghao.”
Jeonghan hummed, nodding his head, taking in all the information, as you added quickly.
“But it was only because all of us were under the influence of aphrodisiacs-”
“That's irrelevant.” Jeonghan waved his hand. “Who you choose to be with and what you choose to do is entirely your choice. But you think Seungcheol is mad about that?”
“I'm not sure. I have a feeling he is.”
“That's not right.”
“Now you see my point?”
“I didn’t say he wasn't stupid.” Jeonghan rolled his eyes. “But I still stand by the fact that he's not a bad person.”
“Okay mate, you need to get your head out of your bestie's ass.”
Jeonghan laughed, shaking his head. You expected him to say something snarky but his expression slowly turned serious.
“Do you know why you're in Camp Seventeen Y/n?”
“Because I'm a demigod?” That was perhaps the first time you had said that out loud.
“Yes but why this camp?”
“The Oracle assigned me.”
“Partly.” Jeonghan nodded. “The Oracle of Delphi only assigns demigods to camps that are willing to take them. Seungcheol was the only leader willing to take you.”
Your lips parted in surprise as Jeonghan continued.
“Do you know what was supposed to happen the night you were kidnapped and brought to the court?”
You shook your head.
“You were going to be attacked.” Jeonghan let out a deep breath. “The sudden activation of your aura after years of dormancy seemed to have drawn in a lot of attention. Days after your little incident, Olympus sent out a report that the levels of monster activity in the city were unprecedentedly high. They said there was a large influx of monsters and we had to be alert but I don't think so. Especially not after what we learnt today.”
“What do you mean?”
“It's not monsters but one monster that came to the city.” Jeonghan looked at you keenly. “I think it was the Chimaera and I think you are what it's hunting.”
The things in your hand slipped and hit the floor with a thud. You?
“You mean… I'm the threat in this camp?”
“You're the one in danger.” He corrected. “But yes you are the threat and more importantly, Cheol knows that. He always knew that. It was evident from the start that you were a monster magnet, that you are some kind of anomaly and that making you a part of our camp would only mean more danger but he said it didn't matter. He said as long as someone needed to be saved, he would do it. He said he would be your protector and that's why you're here Y/n - because Cheol made the choice to safeguard you.”
You blinked at a loss of words.
“Even yesterday, when the geese attacked and we didn't know what was happening at the party, his first instinct was to check if you were okay. That's why he came to the rager. That’s also why he's been so frustrated, why he doesn't want you to accompany him tomorrow. Your safety is his first priority.”
Letting out a deep breath, you ran your hand through your hair, internally beating yourself up. You had no idea.
“Will Seungcheol be coming for the lesson today?”
Jeonghan shook his head. “I don't think so, he's busy at Mingyu’s workshop, preparing for tomorrow, like you should be doing too.”
“I can't possibly learn anything by tonight that'll help me tomorrow.”
“Yes you can.” Jeonghan walked up to you. “We can try and understand why the Chimaera is after you. We can discuss your lawsuit considering it was the root cause of everything and see if it gives us any answers. Let me just call Wonwoo and-”
“Absolutely not.” You quickly grabbed all your things again. Wonwoo was still on the list of people you didn't want to meet. “I need to find Cheol first.”
And with that you swung your bag over your shoulder, rushing out of the classroom, leaving a sighing Jeonghan behind.
When you reached Mingyu’s residence, Seungcheol was indeed in the workshop along with a couple of camp members, inspecting the weapons for tomorrow. Immersed in their discussion they didn't notice your presence until you stepped in and Cerberus let out a low growl, his eyes following you.
“Y/n.” Mingyu jogged up to you, looking concerned. “What are you doing here?”
“I…” You gulped looking at Seungcheol’s back. “I was hoping to talk to Cheol real quick.”
“We're in the middle of a meeting, I'm not sure…”
“Please Mingyu, it'll be quick.”
“I can ask him but-”
“Gyu.” Seungcheol looked over his shoulder. “What's the matter?”
“Y/n is here,” Mingyu raised his voice. “She wants to talk to you.”
As lightning ripped across the sky, Seungcheol let out a deep breath “Send her away.”
And for the nth time you could hear your heart breaking because of Seungcheol.
“Seungcheol I just want to apolo-”
“I don't want to hear it.” He turned to you, voice hard and gaze unforgiving. “Please leave.”
Mingyu looked at you apologetically as did the other members, Jihoon included. Taking a step back and then another you walked out, the low grumbles of the thunder not louder than the thumping of your heart.
Tumblr media
Sometimes you really had to remind yourself that Natalie was in fact a pig and not a dog.
You tended to forget given how much she liked to be taken on walks and sniff everything around. Today she took you from Seungcheol’s house to Mingyu’s to Seungkwan’s to the common cabin and finally to the temple where she found a spot of wet mud and decided to roll in it. That was until she spotted Wonwoo walking by, perhaps heading to secure the camp's borders for the night, given it was nearly dusk. You looked away from him but your pet decided to jump up and follow him like she always loved to do.
Sighing, you walked over to the area designated for campfire and sat on one of the logs, picking on the chips of wood nonchalantly. When the cold wind of the evening caressed your skin, sending shivers down your spine, you looked around, making sure no one was watching you. Realising you were all alone you waved your hand, watching the flames dance on your palm before they floated over to the wood in the middle, lighting the campfire. You stared at the orange flames, Jeonghan's words ringing in your head again - I think you're what it's hunting.
It couldn't be a coincidence. A powerful monster, a fire breather that had been quiet for centuries, wanting to find you of all people. That couldn't be a coincidence. Was it possible the Chimaera knew something about you? Did it know why you were such a freak?
And why did Seungcheol choose to protect someone like you? Why won't the man just let you hate him peacefully? He just had to be so righteous and brave and good…. But if he cared about you so much, why did he always pull away? Why did he never reciprocate?
It seemed like life only liked to throw questions at you, never any answers. You were too tired for all this. You just wanted to stop thinking. You just wanted this day to end and let yourself be taken away by sleep so you could forget all this. You just wanted some peace.
As though the universe hated you, at that exact time, Jihoon walked out of the temple, hands shoved in his pockets, mind clearly elsewhere. You were thankful he hadn't noticed your presence and had almost left the premises busy in his own world until he suddenly stopped at the edge of the trees, turning back to see you.
As your eyes locked his, he sighed walking back to you, sitting just over a foot away. He didn't say anything and you didn’t know what to say.
“You're nervous.” He pointed out. “Your heart is racing.”
You shook your head exasperated. “Do people tell you how annoying it is to be around you?”
“Not quite.” He chuckled. “I don't like being around people.”
“Why am I the exception?”
“You came looking for me.”
“You literally just came and sat next to me.”
“I meant earlier.”
“I'm talking about now.”
“I just…” He sighed, turning to you. “I just wanted to say, don’t take whatever Seungcheol says to heart. He has too many pressures on him as leader, especially in situations like this-”
“You know, that excuse is getting very overused. Is his consistent dismissal of me justified just because he's a busy, important man?”
“It's not.” Jihoon shook his head. “But I thought you should know - his heart was racing just as fast when you came to talk to him. It always is around you.”
You scoffed, tired of people telling you the same thing.
“All that tachycardia could be pathological. He should get himself checked-”
“There's clearly something he's unable to tell you, some reason for why he is the way he is.” Jihoon justified. “Give him a chance to explain himself.”
“I have to give him a chance?” You looked at him incredulously. “Did you not see how he sent me away?”
“Yes I did, it was the same way you ran away to a party when he wanted to talk.” Jihoon rolled his eyes. “If you both just keep being idiots like this, things are never going to get better.”
“Honestly things don’t have to.” You tugged on the sleeves of your shirt. “It's not like we are star crossed lovers or something. This infatuation or crush or whatever it is, it will eventually die down. All I hope is for us to at least be courteous with each other but he can't even seem to do that.”
Jihoon stared at the ground. “Are you trying to convince me or yourself?”
That was a question you didn't have an answer to. So you ignored it.
“I just want us to be pleasant over tomorrow's hunt, that's all. But something tells me things might just get a whole lot worse.”
“Are you making predictions again?” Jihoon chuckled. “Have you still not learnt that you're horrible at it?”
“Hey, that's not fair.” You laughed along. “Besides, the day is not over yet.”
“Oh you still think you stand a chance with me?”
You narrowed your eyes at his laughing self. “I didn't say it had to be you. But you said you could make me cum thrice - I only came once.”
“Twice.”
“Once.”
“You're forgetting that I can read your body.” He cocked his head at you. “Twice.”
“Whatever.” You rolled your eyes. “Still less than three.”
“You and I both know if I wasn't interrupted I could've done it.”
“Not true.” You shook your head. “If I blew you, you didn't stand a chance.”
“How ever will we know which of us is right?”
He looked at you, something darker swirling behind his eyes and it made your insides twist. There was a way to find out and given how empty you had been feeling since earlier, maybe you would have, if only Seungwkan didn't walk over, settling down on the log across yours. Although Jihoon and you were already sitting apart, the two of you moved further away.
“Natalie is sleeping in Jun's barn apparently.” Seungkwan informed. “Wonwoo has too much to do today - There won't be a shift handover tomorrow since Hansol and Jihoon will be heading for the hunt.”
You nodded, not really understanding because you didn't really bother to actually. Your mind was entirely elsewhere, wondering about other possibilities.
“We uh should probably sleep early since, you know,-” You got up swinging your arms. “-big day tomorrow.”
“Yeah.” Jihoon followed your suit, slowly standing. “Better get good rest.”
Seungwkan nodded, glancing at Hansol who was walking over, “You two go ahead, the two of us need to have a little chat.”
You nodded as the man in question sat beside Seungwkan, poking the fire with a stick, avoiding your eyes as usual. Unbothered, you turned to Jihoon, catching him already looking at you.
“Jihoon can I-”
“Y/n do you-”
Both of you looked at each other, gulping.
“I uh…” You tried yet again to feign casualness. “I wanted to ask for the ointment you gave me earlier, for bruises. I… have many mosquito bites.”
“Right.” He scratched his head. “I was going to offer you the same.”
“Oh good.”
“Yeah good.”
Seungkwan’s eyes flickered between the two of you but it was only when Hansol looked up that you realised just how suspicious this must seem. Waving an uncharacteristic bye, you quickly left, Jihoon following at a considerable distance as you made your way to his residence.
The events of earlier today repeated in a similar fashion - Jihoon plucked a few herbs and walked into his house. You followed him, straight into his pantry this time considering neither of you needed a change of clothes. He proceeded to grind up the greens in a paste as you leaned against the door, watching the strong muscles of his back. Fuck you’d love to run your nails down that.
“What are we doing Y/n?” Finally stopping whatever he was doing, Jihoon gripped the edges of the counter, his expression unseen.
“I don’t know what you are doing.” You shrugged. “I am just here to prove I was right.”
Chuckling, Jihoon turned to you. When he saw you slowly unbuttoning the shirt you had donned, his eyes darkened. “Straight down then left.” He turned back to whatever he was doing. “Wait in my room.”
Pulling your shirt off your shoulders you threw it at him, letting out a giggle and walking away.
“I don’t like to wait!” You announced, following his instructions. Almost.
On the way your eyes fell on the music room you had seen earlier, legs instinctively taking a detour. There were all kinds of instruments in there - banjos on the wall, guitars lined up beside the drum set. There was a large grand piano too and a huge computer with all kinds of equipment around. It was impressive to say the least.
“I said left, not right.” Jihoon walked in, one hand shoved in his pocket, another holding on to a strange, black drink.
“You have a recording studio here.”
“I would say you're observative but it's pretty obvious so that would be an overstatement.”
“How do you power these?” You turned to him. “Without electricity?”
“Well you’re analytical, I’ll give you that.” He let out a small laugh before he explained. “I’m the Sun’s progeny - a little solar energy goes a long way.”
“So all of these work?” You looked around surprised. “Can I listen to something you’ve made?”
“I don’t think we’re close enough for that.”
You rolled your eyes. “But we’re close enough for you to have your fingers in me?”
“You asked for it.” He shrugged. “And I’m a giver.”
Laughing, you ran your fingers across the piano. “Can you at least play something for me?”
Jihoon looked at you for a solid minute before he let out a resigned breath. Setting the drink down on the counter, he grabbed a saxophone from the wall and aligned it with his mouth. You leaned against the piano, urging him to continue with the tilt of the head.
As the sultry sound of his melody rang through the room, you found yourself swaying to it - it was a good piece, a sexy one that definitely worked to set the mood. But you had ways you could do that on your own too.
Nearing him, each step matching the rhythm of the music, you ran your hand along his groin, feeling his erection already waiting for you. Smirking to yourself you got on your knees before him, hands working on his waistband and surprisingly, you heard him mess up a note.
“Uh oh.” You tutted, looking up at him. “No mistakes, no fumbling or I’ll stop.”
Jihoon tensed under your touch, continuing to play his piece, facing turning red but the melody not stopping. Unzipping his pants, you just about leaned in to give the bulge in his underwear a butterfly of a kiss when you felt a chill run down your body. Something was wrong.
As though you’d lost all sense of autonomy, you could feel yourself moving back, sitting on your heels, your hands proceeding to unclasp your bra instead. Sliding it down your arms and throwing it away, you got up and shimmied out of your shorts and underwear in one go. You gulped as Jihoon watched you sit on the black couch across him, breaths shallow and fast, chest heaving because this wasn’t you - you somehow had no control over your body. You didn’t mean to pull your legs up and spread them open or run your fingers along your slit, or slide them into your wet hole as though you were putting on a show for him. Yes you felt good but none of this was you.
Jihoon watched with hooded eyes as you pumped your fingers in and out, free hand moving up to squeeze a boob. Everything moved to its own accord, working you up with a vigor you would have never used on yourself, the sound of the wetness and your moans almost drowning out the song. Your back arched as you felt everything tense, but your eyes did not leave Jihoon’s who finally could not take it anymore, setting the sax aside, leaning over you.
His own fingers found your clit, rubbing onto it in a way that unmistakably tightened the coil in you. Whimpers left your mouth and though it felt like you were in control of yourself again, you couldn’t stop. Not now, not when you were feeling so good, not when you were so close…. Not until Jihoon whispered.
“Come on sweetheart, cum for me.”
And you did, around your own fingers, eyes seeing white as he continued to tease your clit, a groan rumbling across his chest.
“Wha…” You panted, slowly coming down from your high, arousal leaking out of you. “What the hell just happened?”
“That-” Jihoon smirked, straightening himself. “-was my prediction coming true.”
“But why could I… why could I not…”
“Control yourself?”
You nodded.
“Because the song you just heard is what we call Apollo’s Anthem.” He cocked his head at you victoriously. “If mastered, the one who plays it can make anyone dance to their tunes, like you just did.”
“That….” Your eyes widen with realization. “That was you? Making me do all that?”
He nodded.
“Now that's cheating.” You huffed, pulling your legs together, pressing them. “I demand a rematch. We're gonna have to redo-”
“Next time.” He fisted the material at the back of his neck and pulled his shirt over this head. “Right now there's another prediction we need to work on.”
You furrowed your eyebrows as Jihoon stripped out of his pants, baring himself completely given he had gone commando underneath.
“For fucks sake, I've been hard since the afternoon and there's nothing I can think other than cumming inside you.”
A triumphant smirk danced across your lips as you leaned back, watching his callously stroke his length.
“You know, I had my fill with three orgasms today and I'm quite exhausted. I see no reason I have to indulge.”
Jihoon blinked at you. “Didn't you want to be proven right?”
“Nope.” You shook your head. “My math teacher always used to say, the truth never needs to be proven, it always reveals itself. He was a hot man, now that I'm thinking about him, very irresistible.”
“Can we please not talk about your hot math teacher while I'm jerking off?” Jihoon groaned. “Now I'm thinking of my math teacher and he was a gnome of a man.”
You laughed, watching as he picked up the pace, desperate to finish himself.
“Is your right hand satisfying enough?”
“No but I'll have to settle for imagining it's you.” He whimpered. “Albeit it's not even close to how tight you were.”
You hummed, suddenly feeling both pity for him and curiosity as to just how much a dick as thick as that could stretch you out. “Do you still want to fuck me?”
“Why is that still a question?”
“I'll allow it.” Spreading your legs again, you ran your fingers along the folds again, this time wantonly, smearing the remnants of your previous orgasm all over. “But only because you've to hunt tomorrow and I don't want you to be distracted, thinking about dicking me down-.”
“Stop talking and move over.” He muttered and finally you listened, shifting to the side as he sat beside you. Wasting no time, he grabbed you by the waist and pulled you into his lap, his dick grazing against your clit, sending a jolt down your body. As you held his shoulders, he pumped himself a few times before aligning the tip right at your hole, dragging it along the wetness agonisingly slowly.
“Jihoon for god's sake, just put it in.”
“Say you want me to fuck you.”
“You want me to fuck you.”
Your bratty-ness was met with a painful spank on the ass.
“Say it.” He rubbed the area softly, before spreading the cheeks, the head of his dick ever so slightly entering you. “Say you want this as much as me.”
You tried to chase that feeling, sink further down his length, but his grip was strong and unnerving.
“Fuck Jihoon please.” You whined as his mouth wrapped around your nipple, sucking it. “Let's just do this already.”
“Can’t hear you.”
“Jihoon…” You begged as he pulled out, leaving you clenching around nothing.
“Walls are soundproof sweetheart.” He reached up, nuzzling your neck. “Let me hear you.”
“For fucks sake, fuck me already Jihoon!” You babbled, desperate to not lose the feeling of him sliding into you again. “Fuck me, fuck me, fuck me-”
“Ride me.” He whispered, pushing you down on his cock, the sheer thickness of it nearly splitting you open. “God you're so tight.”
“And you're so big.” You moaned, as you bottomed out on him, feeling every inch of his thickness against your fluttering walls.
Jihoon allowed you to adjust to his length, mouth working on marking your breasts instead but when you began involuntary squeezing him he pulled away, biting his lip like he couldn’t take it anymore.
“Y/n....” He mumbled, fingers gripping your waist tighter. “Move.”
And you did, like your life depended on it, knees digging into the couch taking support. With his hands sliding down to your ass again, he helped too, bouncing you on him with a pace you could not have managed on your own. You threaded your fingers through his hair at the nape of his neck, head thrown back, guttural moans leaving you. Jihoon seemed to enjoy all of it, the way you sounded, the way you felt around him, the way you gripped his hair as your core began to tighten threateningly. You could tell from the way he chose to hold you in place instead, thrusting himself up into you and your arousal dripping down his length filthily that you were close but he was far from ready for this to be over.
Oh this was going to be a long night.
Tumblr media
“Y/n wake up.” It was the soft shaking that drew you out of your sleep. “It’s nearly dawn.”
Jihoon’s face hovered over yours, looking tense. You stretched awake, blinking your eyes open, looking around - you were still in his music room, lying on his couch. You must’ve slept here last night, you didn’t even realise when you went into a deep slumber. From all the bedding on the floor you figured Jihoon crashed in here with you despite having a room of his own in his own house. Slightly thankful that he was gracious enough to not leave you alone, you sat up, pulling your hair into a bun.
“The boys are done washing up if you wish to hit the showers.” He gathered the remaining of your clothes on the floor, which was really just your bra and handed it to you. “You should also eat something. We skipped dinner last night.”
Of course you did.
You’d never had sex this intense before last night. You vaguely remembered cumming nearly three more times - once while you were riding him, right before he emptied his load right into you and two more before he pulled you off him and had you on your knees on the couch, your ass and his cum dripping out of you on display for him as he fucked you and filled you one more time. After that, right before you faded into a deep sleep, you also recalled him cleaning you, handing you that black drink from earlier and helping you get dressed - eating was not even on your agenda before you passed out.
But now admittedly, you were hungry and also in desperate need for a shower so you swung your legs off the couch and got to your feet. Taking a step was particularly difficult though, given how sore you were.
“Here.” Jihoon handed you a glass of the same potion. “It’ll help with the pain.”
Muttering a small thanks, you downed the bitter juice in one gulp. As you returned the glass he handed you a small box of a very familiar green ointment, looking pointedly at your neck. Apparently he had given you his own set of the very bruises he had healed yesterday. Scoffing, you took it from him, walking away, towards the main door.
“Are you okay?” He asked from behind as you nodded, looking over your shoulder.
“Thank you Jihoon, for everything.” and with that you shut the door, stepping out into the darkness before dawn, taking a deep breath.
Something about Jihoon’s expression told you he was expecting you to say something more but you didn’t have anything else to say. He was a distraction, you were successfully distracted and now you were back to your reality and the real world. Now it was time to face Seungcheol again.
Realising the sun would be out in a while, you quickly headed for a shower keeping your head down not to meet the eyes of the boys busy loading the cars at the edge of the camp. As you walked into the bathhouse you wondered if you would meet your regular bypasser at this time of the day too and brushed off the possibility but to your complete surprise, Wonwoo, fully dressed for a change, was right there, leaning against the lockers as though he was waiting for you.
“You're on time.”
“And I don't have the time for you.” You rolled your eyes, grabbing your towel, heading towards the showers.
“Careful Y/n.” Wonwoo called out from behind you, his voice a lot less nonchalant than it normally was. “The Chimaera is no small monster. It's dangerous, manipulative and feeds on chaos.”
You glanced at him over your shoulder as he continued.
“If things take a turn and you're forced to face it, do whatever it takes to fight it. Don't think, don't analyse, just do it.”
Frowning, you turned to him, wondering why he was suddenly saying all this but without explaining himself any further, Wonwoo straightened himself and simply left from there.
Tumblr media
By the time you had arrived at the dining hall, right around the time the sun had begun to peak from behind the mountains, all the boys had gathered around the table, dressed in armours and gear. Jeonghan was leading the meeting again, walking around handing something that looked a lot like a golden medallion.
“Keep your energy readers close to you at all times - the Chimaera is a very intelligent monster but it's not very fast, so in a critical situation, early detection may be what saves your lives.” Noticing your presence, he walked up to you, holding the medallion out. “This is an energy reader. The way demigods have auras, monsters do too and this little handy thing can pick up on it. The closer you are to a creature, the warmer it gets so pay attention. If the medallion manages to pick the right frequency, it will morph into an image of the monster so you'll know exactly what it is. Understood?”
You nodded.
“Turn.”
And you did, as he pushed your hair onto a shoulder and secured the chain at the nape of your neck. You ran your fingers across the golden indentation of the surface curiously - it was kind of heavy.
“Your armour is in Cheol's car.” Mingyu piqued from his seat. “So are the flares and your looking glass.”
You turned to Jeonghan who understood the confusion etched on your face.
“You are, at no point, allowed to abandon your partner but on the off chance that you are separated, send a flare and it will help him identify your location and a looking glass-” He pulled out a small pane of glass from his pocket. “-is how you can communicate with the members. Just say the name of whoever you want to talk to and they'll appear on it.”
Finally understanding you nodded, as Jeonghan handed you one last thing - a folded paper.
“This is a copy of the map. Seungcheol will be driving so be sure to guide him properly.”
You looked over his shoulder at the leader who seemed tense.
“Whatever is going on between you two, please just keep aside for one day.” Jeonghan looked at you pointedly and sighing, you nodded. You would be courteous with him, you could do that much.
As the boys began shuffling around, getting to their feet and leaving the hall, a hand on your arm stopped you from following.
“Breakfast.” Jun held out with a small box that looked like it was filled to the brim. “Eat on the way. You'll need your energy.”
Muttering a grateful thanks, you took it from him, glancing at Minghao who was standing beside him, arms crossed.
“I know you're not fully trained but every demigod should have a weapon on them when they're out in the real world.” Your trainer put a pair of daggers in your hand. “Twin blades. I think they'll suit you.”
You turned the sheathed weapons in your hand, liking how light they felt. Minghao seemed proud of how comfortable you were.
“Stay safe doll.”
He called out as you left, a new unknown fear coursing through you as everything got more and more real.
By the time you reached the gates, everyone else had already taken off, leaving only Seungcheol leaning against his G wagon, waiting for you. The things Mingyu mentioned were in the passenger seat, neatly folded when you opened the door. As you tried to quickly slip them all on, Seungcheol waited, not offering to help, not even looking, just staring out at the woods. When you finally clambered in, he got in too, turning on the engine and taking off swiftly. You stared at the map on your lap - fuck, it was a long ride.
Tumblr media
In the 2 hours that the two of you had been driving, the sun had fully risen, you had finished your breakfast and not one word that was irrelevant to the route had been exchanged. You stared out of the window, watching the trees whizz by - you had crossed much of the town houses in the outskirts and the road was getting narrower and lonelier now. It made sense why a monster would hide out here.
“How much further?” Seungcheol asked, fingers drumming the wheel.
“Until we reach the big olive tree.” You peered at the map trying to understand the images instead given you couldn't read Greek. “There we turn left.”
Seungcheol hummed, then silence descended once again.
It was a miracle you went through so much time without saying anything to the man beside you. Considering it was just the two of you and neither of you could run, it was the perfect time to talk about everything going on but you found yourself complying with Jeonghan’s instructions and keeping quiet. Perhaps because you had too much on your mind.
As nonchalant as you tried to seem, the Chimaera terrified you. It wasn't because it was apparently a big scary monster but because it was seeking you. You were no idiot - you knew that if a creature that powerful wanted to kill you, it could have at many instances when you were being particularly reckless. This one definitely wanted something else from you and the thought of that was more terrifying. What could a monster possibly need from you?
You didn't know. And maybe like most things in your life you wouldn't get to know. Like you didn't get to meet Hestia, or didn't understand why your powers were so different, or didn't know how to cope with the fact that you could never be a mother. It was perhaps just another thing to add to this never ending list.
“Y/n.” Seungcheol's hand on your arm pulled you out of your thoughts. “How many times do I have to ask? Is that the tree?”
You glanced at it and then back at the map and nodded. “Yeah, sorry, that's the one.”
Shifting gears Seungcheol slowed down, turning left like you told him to but to both of your surprise, the road ahead led straight into a forest that was submerged in darkness despite it being so early in the day. Confused, Seungcheol turned on the headlights as he drove ahead but the moment the car moved ahead, the lights turned off.
Frowning, he tried again, only to receive the same result - the lights kept turning off.
Annoyed, he stopped the vehicle, grabbing a rather large lighter from the dashboard and stepped out, opening up the hood. Unbuckling your belt, you followed him.
“Sit inside Y/n.”
“How are you supposed to hold the lighter and fix this thing?” You grabbed the light from him and held it over the engine. “Is there a problem?”
Seungcheol peered at the machinery, frowning. “I don't think so. I don't know why…..” He trailed off like a realisation hit him. “Did you say the tree we crossed was an olive tree?”
“I think it was?” You held out the map for Seungcheol to see. “I can't read Greek.”
“That’s not an olive tree and this isn't any ordinary forest….” He turned to you, both your faces illuminated by the faint light of the fire. “This is the Forest of Nyx, the Goddess of the Night.”
“Is that why the lights won't work?” You whispered, feeling a chill run down your body. “Is that why it's so dark?”
“It's always night at her realm. No light, no Gods, no eyes are allowed here.” He gulped as though he suddenly realised the proximity between the two of you. “No one can see us here.”
You frowned not understanding what he meant when he shut the hood, the headlights surprisingly flaring up again. Before you could even process what was going on, he pulled you up against him, the lighter dropping from your hands due to the sheer force as your body pressed against his.
“Cheol-”
“No one can see us Y/n.” He whispered, eyes drifting to your lips. “No one.”
And in a flash, his mouth was on yours - hot, wanting and desperate.
You gripped his arms, taken aback by the suddenness but when he pulled you closer like he didn't even want air between the two of you, you ran your hands up his chest and neck, threading them into his thick hair. Taking that as a sign of approval, he moved his hands down, briefly squeezing your ass before catching hold of your thighs and lifting you with unsurprising ease, wrapping your legs around his waist. You moaned when you felt his tongue slip into your mouth, his hands annoyed by all the armour as though they wanted to rip it out.
It was only when you felt breathless and pulled back that he finally let you go. Looking up at you equally breathless, eyes almost pleading, the words that you'd been dying to hear left his mouth at last.
“Fuck I've wanted this for so long.” He groaned. “I wanted you for so long Y/n, please….”
You gulped, stiffening when you understood what he was begging for.
Choi Seungcheol wanted to sleep with you.

“the university of tokyo…” he mutters, before looking down at the brochure he’s holding.
deep breaths. a new school means new friends—and new friends means… talking to people.
megumi lets out a sigh, finding it seemingly hard to understand why he couldn’t just stay at tokyo jujustu high. at least there, everyone knew to stay out of his way. but in a new school, he had to—one, stay out of trouble for tsumiki. and two, find a way to make people “fear” him without using force.
yet, number two seems to be working already with how everyone steps aside as he walks down the hallway towards the student’s affair office. his bag strap hangs on one shoulder, slipping with every stride he takes, making megumi reposition it so often that he ultimately decides to just hold it in place.
as he reaches the office, he uses the hand that currently holds the brochure to open the door, slightly crumpling the paper from the action. megumi takes one deep breath and exhales for three; before finally letting the door behind him close.
“hey!” a voice greets and from where he stands, and it only takes about two strides for him to reach the table where a student was sitting at. what people don’t know about him is that it takes a lot for megumi to seem as composed as he is—consciously using one step to gather up the courage to say:
“hi,” the second step, another deep breath. and megumi successfully gets his message across, “i’m here to pass my forms?”
the student stands up and smiles, reaching out a hand to take them, “oh! okay. can i have a look, please?”
to which megumi obeys, finally ridding the burden of these papers off of his chest. as he passes them over to the student, he is highly aware of his posture, keeping it straight as much as possible. a minute passes, then three and it makes him wonder
did he fill these out right?
after five scrutinizing minutes, the student finally looked up. settling the papers nicely in their necessary bins for better organization.
“you’re new here?”
“yeah,” and megumi nods, repositioning the falling bag strap again. at his response, the student smiles warmly and he finds it so contagious.
“oh, that’s great! welcome to the university of tokyo,” megumi starts to shift on his feet and manages to give back a small smile, albeit forced.
“i’m the student government president, from class 4. but you can just call me by my name. no need for formalities.”
student government president from class 4, huh? seems like he’ll have no choice but to remember your name…
classmate.
he bows a little, standing up to his full height as he introduces himself, “fushiguro megumi.”
you’re still smiling and he wonders, how does one do that? he can’t even hold a proper conversation, let alone smile for a long time—your voice cuts him from his trail of thought, capturing his attention.
“i tend to facilitate newcomers’ information and i can’t help but notice that you’re here on a scholarship grant?” you inquire, a curious look in your face. “you’re a smart guy!”
with your remark, megumi fights the urge to roll his eyes because he always hears this phrase, to the point that it gets irritating. he wants to be known for more than his intelligence but, how?
how, when he instantly contradicts himself by being introverted?
but, for some reason unbeknownst to him, you—you were able to make his heart skip a tiny beat. it was like you were almost able to bring back the euphoria of him being called the “smart guy.”
well, almost but not quite. it is still a bit annoying.
“yeah,” he forces a smile, running a hand through his hair, “it’s just my sister and i. so, i need all the financial help i can get.”
well— there goes keeping a low profile.
he internally chastises himself, ready to end this conversation. praying that you won’t pry even deeper. because this whole, transferring to a new school and passing of forms has already taken a toll on his social battery and he wants out.
“oh! i didn’t know…” you softly say.
maybe for another day it would be fine, but he really can’t handle long conversations. it’s too overwhelming that his internal monologue goes haywire.
don’t ask. don’t ask. don’t as—
“well, if you ever need anything i’m here.”
thank god.
with that megumi presses his lips in a thin line, forgetting the decency to say thank you and opts to bow his head instead. turning to walk out the doors of the office, megumi hastens his steps and gets to his first class.

~; 5 months later
when he said keep a low profile, he didn’t mean being: top 1 in his class and the representative of class 4 at interschool events.
he seriously just had to be smart, did he?
well, he was always an excellent student, even when he was at tokyo jujutsu high. it was just because he got into so much trouble that he stood out in an intimidating way, that no one even dared to mention his name. but here, since he was naturally adept at academics, he finds himself—much to his dismay—in quiz bees, math leagues and writing contests. to the point that everything and anything acad-related in between.
he. was. there.
yet, interestingly. you were also there where he was. but he seriously can’t think any of it, because before he came around, you were always the top student in class 4. although, since he saw you so often, he found himself subconsciously? he honestly doesn’t know at this point—but he would find himself in areas where he knew he’d find you on campus. and in the rare events that you’d meet his eyes, megumi would give you a small smile.
during interschool events he’d find a way to watch you compete after he’s done with his. always consistent with the way he’s there to applaud for you whether you make it or not.
and it’s weird.
not because he's a stalker, no. but because new things, experiences and feelings give him the creeps. and yet, he finds himself drawn to go deeper than he already is in this little rabbit hole of distantly being there for all your achievements. and as a logical, rational person who always uses his brain for everything, he rarely gets caught in a tangled web of fuzzy feelings—though this one. this one feels different.
ring. ring.
“hi. welcome to—” he looks up and stops wiping the counter mid-way. he feels giddy? is that the right term for the way his heart is beating? or is it bordering on arrhythmi—
“fushiguro, hi!” your voice catches him before he falls into a spiral. seriously, you just knew how to. “you work here?”
he neatly folds the towel he was using and sets it aside, all the while maintaining eye contact with you, “yeah, i started last week.”
“really?” scanning the menu board, megumi watches you intently, patiently waiting for you to pick a drink he’ll whip up, “i always see you around … it’s nice.”
you finally look at him again smiling and it takes everything in him not to falter from the way you’re looking at him.
“ahh … yeah?” he softly laughs, “i mean we are classmates and class 4 representatives.”
“haha, yeah! makes sense…” he starts to rest his hand on the register, shifting his weight on one foot. the cafe’s empty and he’s kind of glad. glad that he can stare at you unabashedly without the pressure of having to tend to customers. after a few more minutes you speak up again, “hmm, can i just have a latte?”
megumi nods and turns around to start prepping what he needs for your drink. he moves swiftly but deliberately. fully aware that you’re watching him and it makes things harder. because the more conscious he is, he is more likely to make mistakes and when he thinks about making a mistake, he has to think harder to make the drin— well, instead of unconsciously making drinks, megumi's consciously repeating a mantra in his head.
do not mess up. do not mess up. do not mess u—
“last week, huh?”
and, you’ve done it again.
he relaxes. visibly? he’s not sure. but he’s thankful that the nerves have now left his body just from you saying those three words.
“mhm,” is all he manages as he finally looks at you; finished drink in hand. megumi realizes that he’s going a little non-verbal and softly coughs, chastising himself.
yeah, megumi. cough out the nerves. great going.
“last week. i started last week,” he hands you the finished drink in hand and he rings it up on the register… remembering that he should have done that before he made your drink.
c’mon, megumi get it together.
“your total is 250 yen,” he says, aware of the blush that dares to place itself on his cheeks, but he ignores it—he can say it's from the cold for all he cares. but, what he does care about, is the way you smiled widely at the little latte art he did.
he made a heart. hoping it’ll reach you the right way.
“aww, a heart!” you tease, “for me?” handing over your payment, megumi tenses up; even more so than before. his hands find themselves in the pocket of his apron, hiding the way it shakes to the best of his abilities.
“it’s the only thing i can do right now.”
that’s a lie—he’s mastered almost all the common latte arts the minute he worked here.
“that’s so cute,” your eyes meet with his and he smiles. like actually smiles. not that half-assed, i’m just being nice, forced smile, but a genuine smile that came from his heart.
and things rarely come from his heart.
smiling up at him, you take the drink and wave goodbye, “thanks again, fushiguro.”
for a phrase he constantly says to all customers, it holds no meaning. but this time, he found himself wanting you to actually, “come back again.”
and with that, he manages to give you a small wave—watching as your figure moves further and further away from him.
Tumblr media
~; 1 year later
megumi was only able to do one of the things he swore when he transferred here. and that’s staying out of trouble for tsumiki. number two? well, let’s just say everyone seemed to like him. as he enters the classroom, he nicely acknowledges those who waved him over, but megumi just continues to walk over to where you were seated.
math test results were released yesterday and he knows it wasn’t your best performance. seated by the window, your head was propped up by your hand, a distant look in your eyes. as megumi places his bag down at his assigned seat, the one in front of you, he carefully places your regular order of a latte on top of your desk. just the way you like it.
he sits on the chair sideways and with his arm resting on the backrest, he gently taps your desk; effectively pulling you out from your daze. megumi nods over at the latte he brought and you look at the drink for a few seconds, before looking at him with the cutest, poutiest frown ever.
“fushiguro,” you’re touched, that much he knows with the way you’ve drawn out his name, “how’d you know?”
“it’s all you order,” he says, managing to make you laugh. and at the sound of it, megumi feels his heart feel funny again—he gives you a comforting smile and a small, “cheer up.”
you grab the drink with both your hands and you furrow your brows, a tender look on your face, yet there are still remnants of sorrow. and megumi— well, megumi isn’t the best person to talk to when it comes to providing solace because emotions make him uncomfortable sometimes. so, he does the next best thing he can offer, which is logic.
“i’ll tutor you later, okay?” he suggests, second-guessing himself whether or not he’s doing this right. but he tries, “come by the cafe.”
you’re quiet, still looking at the drink, and he wonders if he messed up. so, he sits there uncomfortably, shifting in his seat; waiting for any recognition you’d provide to his “logical” solution.
maybe that isn’t what you need, he thinks.
for megumi, the silence feels like eternity, but he knows it really only took you about a few seconds to finally respond in the smallest voice.
“okay… thank you.”
“you’re welcome,” he smiles, doing the best he can to ease your mind off the test result. “drink up. you’ll feel better.”
~; 5:30pm, at the cafe.
“okay, when looking for a point in a hyperbola,” tapping his pen at his notes, “what do we need to use?”
“the standard formula of a hyperbola?” the two of you have been at it for a good hour and a half, and he’s really impressed with how fast you’re able to pick up concepts.
“good job,” he says, following up with another question, “but how do you know if it’s a vertical one?”
you furrow your brows and he watches the way you nibble at your bottom lip, making his heart rate pick up. and as if that view wasn’t enough, the two of you are secluded, seated at the furthest corner of the cafe, sharing a small table. the close proximity and the subtle brushes of your arms makes his breath hitch, yet he perseveres.
as you contemplate, megumi hooks a finger up to his collar and pulls on it a bit, hoping it’ll release some tension in his body right now. but really, it doesn’t help, so he’s just thankful that you’re too preoccupied and adjusts the way he was seated instead—resting both of his arms on the table, with sleeves rolled up, he slightly leans forward.
“when the traverse axis is vertical…”
okay, correct.
“and…” you pause and he watches as your face slowly remembers what he taught you, “and when– when–!”
almost there.
“when the y-term is positive and comes first in the equation!”
there you go. megumi smiles and nods his head, genuinely proud that you’ve finally got it. you squeal and everything seems to happen so fast because he said great job and suddenly— you were gone?
what?
so, he backtracks.
“great job,” he says in a pleased tone and you look up at him, squealing, noses almost brushing with the way he’s leaning forward. he then softly laughs and is surprised at the sudden attack of a hug from you. but he didn’t have time to reciprocate the action.
because by the time he decides to place a hand at the small of your back, your hands fly to cup his cheeks—pulling him in for a kiss.
you pulled him in for a kiss.
oh.
megumi sits there dumbfounded, staring at the door that’s now swaying back and forth from the impact of your escape and it takes him a good few minutes before he realizes that you left all your stuff.
your bag, your notebook, your pens—everything.
Tumblr media
~; one week later.
it has now been one week since the incident—though he wouldn’t really call it something negative. the only downside is that you have constantly been avoiding him.
you weren’t very good at it.
because he had to watch you bump into a wall and then a student for turning so quickly when you saw him walking towards you. while avoiding him in school is fine, what he doesn’t like is that you haven’t been to the cafe—and you were there almost everyday, ordering a drink or not.
does it make him upset? yes, he won’t deny it. so when he hears the bells of the cafe door ringing, and looks up to see you standing there? he’s reeling in all his happiness.
“hey,” he softly calls out, a small lopsided smile on his face. he watches as you take a step, then another, and another, before finally reaching the counter. and he finds it so nostalgic—reminding him of the time that he also took calculated steps when he approached you back then at the student’s affairs office.
“hi,” your voice is soft, almost like a whisper; if he hadn’t been waiting for this moment, he would’ve missed it, but he’s wanted for so long to hear your voice again that megumi smiles a bit bigger, relishing the way your cheeks look flushed.
it’s cute.
“latte?” he asks and you meekly nod. but, before he turns over to make your drink, he reaches down the counter and pulls out your bag—completely aware that your eyes shoot wide open. it takes a lot in him not to laugh at you during this moment and just opts to gently place it in front of you. as he sets it down, his hands barely have pulled away when you quickly snatched it off the counter. your reaction makes him let out a little snort before turning around to make your drink.
megumi does it in record time and as he looks back at you to hand it over, your payment is already placed nicely on the counter. once he rings it up on the register, he looks at you expectantly. it’s silent for a few minutes before realizing that he’s missed something.
"ah, right," he shuffles awkwardly, turning his back to you to grab tissues and—"here you go."
“thank you,” you fidget with the napkins he handed over and he watches as a myriad of emotions flow over your face. when you finally looked up at him, he perks up.
“thanks for my stuff and my coffee…” you pause, closing your eyes, “look, i’m sorry about last week—”
before you could react, megumi leans over the counter to give you a chaste kiss. letting his lips linger on yours for a few moments and he smiles when you finally reciprocate. as your mouth moves with his, it gives megumi the courage to keep going.
hoping that you’ll finally get that the feeling was mutual all along.
he’d continue to kiss you but, for workplace etiquette, he has to pull away. and so he does. he pulls away just enough for your noses to still be touching. as he slowly opens his eyes, they meet yours and he feels drunk on the feeling—the high he got from your lips on his.
“don’t be,” he whispers, breaking whatever tension was holding you two back and hoping that this will be enough to reassure you. “come by again everyday, yeah?”
he subconsciously licks his lips and megumi watches as your resolve falters.
“yeah…“ you finally managed to say and he smiles, sneaking in one more kiss.
“and stop avoiding me, okay?”
you nod but he isn’t satisfied, he needs to hear your voice—that and because he enjoys watching the confident student government president lose the ability to speak in front of him. so, one more kiss and to hell with it if his boss sees.
“okay?” he teases.
“okay…” you whisper, cupping your face with your hands; he smiles, finally satisfied. you furrow your brows at him, biting back a smile to which you fail miserably. megumi loves the way it brightens up his day as he watches your smile get bigger.
you both quietly laugh at the whole ordeal and megumi brushes his nose against yours before finally pulling away to stand up to his full height. grabbing your drink, he watches you walk towards a table—taking a seat, you scrunch up your nose when you look at him and he understands.
i’ll be here until your shift is over.

Nanami constantly talked about how beautiful you would be with grey hair. You weren't really sure why he did it at first. Maybe he had a thing for silver foxes? You couldn't blame him, knowing you would've been more than ecstatic on the day he finally had a full head of grey. The first few times he brought it up you teased him, "Oh yeah? You into grandmas Ken?" and "At this point you're going to manifest it." fell from you lips regularly.
One thing you noticed towards the beginning of your relationship was that he always seemed to have fixations. First it was moving in together, then going to Malaysia, then moving into your forever home, then marriage and finally this. It was a shame he would have to wait a little while longer for his vision to come true, but so far it had all worked in his favour. Perhaps it was a quirk of being a sorcerer.
It was a regular afternoon where you and Kento spent time together cuddled up in the coziness of your bedsheets and pillows. He was reading something by an author whose name you could not pronounce, slightly propped up in order to not put any pressure on the wound that marked his torso - result of a mission gone south- and you scrolled aimlessly through your timeline. Even though the chance of losing your husband ailed you greatly, you couldn't deny feeling grateful for the extra quality time you had due to his medical leave, basking in his warmth and scent.
You both continued, entranced in your separate activities until a certain video caught your eye. A girl and her friends tried on an ageing filter, said to be the most accurate by dermatologists, laughing and screaming at their faces that magically turned 40 years older in seconds. Definitely a sign.
"Ken come here" you said, moving up the bed and angling the camera so the light from the lamp illuminated his sleepy face. Obediently, he leaned in and studied with a confused expression for a moment before opening his eyes wide, watching as the wrinkles and frosted hair came over his features.
You couldn't help but laugh at his reaction. "Do you like it? You look so handsome, I knew you'd age well." But your giddiness was met with silence as he continued to stare at the screen. This time not at himself, but at you.
You weren't quite sure what he was thinking, his face didn't give anything away as you watched him watching you - waiting for some kind of understandable reaction. Instead he leaned in closer, taking your raised hand in his and squeezing it tight so to take a screenshot before sending the picture to himself and rolling over. Minutes went by with him looking at his phone, zooming into different features - taking in the information like it was a sacred ancient hieroglyphic. It was rare you ever saw Kento get choked up but there you were, spectating as his hand kneaded his eyes as if trying to rid the oncoming emotion.
"Ken? What's wrong?...Are you okay?" You Shuffled closer with a grounding hand.
"I'm fine." His short answer was not satisfactory, he could feel it from the look you gave him. "I am. I just...Never thought I'd be able to see you age in this lifetime."
The confession was heavy. It lingered in the air. Your body only allowed for your mouth to open in a soft 'o' at the revelation. The months of subtle hints and ridiculous wonders suddenly made sense. A touching sentiment but one that put a strain on your heart. How were you so oblivious? You racked your mind for anything to say, trying unsuccessfully to come up with something virtually comforting. You and Kento both knew the implications of your jobs and the burden of duty that made you refuse to quit. There was no point in denying the possibility, not after having to bury so many people- it would be insensitive- and ignorance wasn't a privilege you had. So you tried your best.
"You might be right. But even if we don't get to grow old in this lifetime- we still have the next, right?"
He slowly looked up, mouth pinched in a trying smile and delicate eyes.
"You're right, I guess we do."
Forty years later and you spend your evenings looking at the printed picture of you and Kento. Turns out the filter wasn't the most accurate, so until you see him again you will also wonder what your lover would look like had he gotten the chance to age.

You are fucked.
So fucked in an irreparable way.
You wish a gun would be an option. It should be so easy, so simple - boom! And you’d be outta here. No one would care, even if you become a bug one day - no one would have noticed anyway, and there would be no thought to check your room. Samsa had it easier, even briefly, no one would spend their time to get rid of you. At the same time, you can’t bring yourself to end this all, the most ethical way is to live and wait for something. People die, you will too. Cowardly hiding yourself, afraid to appear in front of others like they will notice your cowardice, lack of capacity to do the favor. There is a certainty that life would end by being alone and miserable.
The sentiment isn’t just something that appeared in your head out of nowhere, you wished it was like that cause the glimpse of disappointment in your mother’s eyes isn’t the glow you have ever wanted to see. Silently calling you a piece of trash, maybe she is more straightforward with her friends - after all, you don’t interact much anymore. Never have you expected to be able to read someone’s thoughts from the face alone. So to stay away, locked from her sight is the right choice. There are no mirrors to face the mess you are.
And you are only in your 20s, they shouldn’t suck like that.
Your mom was right, actually. You won’t admit that because she believes moms are always right. After a certain point, aging is a burden on the shoulders. There is an invisible hand, not of the market, but of the big-big responsibility that comes with the age, it pushes you down like you are a dumb dog and you can’t hide from the shame. Feels odd, wrong, those animals are much smarter than you. And loved.
And partially, you are unlucky, at least you consider yourself one - while failing at every aspect of your life, this feeling got even deeper into your skin when your mom started bringing in her boyfriend. Attractive. Charismatic. Sexy. And god, you probably drilled holes into him.
Even worse, seeing her so happy and having something you can’t make your body fill with dread - this should be you.
You don’t like him.
Because he should be yours. In another life maybe, when being active and talking to someone isn’t an impossible task. Even though, this man is so insufferable to be around, at least you didn’t expect him to be one. Corny, dumb jokes. So unfunny, they want you to kill yourself whenever you catch the corners of your lips tug up. And he is really handsy, but the worst of them all - he doesn’t always ignore your existence too.
Leon. That was his name, he seemed a proper man, too normal, trying to be fun and charismatic - to get into your mom’s pants. Not yours. If someone asked your opinion, his jokes were lame as much as he is, but his handsome and hot face was compensating for his… whatever he is. And money. Rolex doesn’t grow on the trees, Ducati neither. You wouldn’t have minded his existence if he didn’t try to introduce himself in your life, feels like he is pitying you. You can see it in his blue eyes, that glimpse of pity every time he catches you out of your room (late at night). Too late in your life, too late that there is no place for him.
In all honesty. You don’t like him, but god, fuck, you like him too much for your own good.
He is too simple for his own sake. His smell doesn’t invade every corner of the apartment and he isn’t yours. Leon is the type of a man you’d find in most watched porn, highlight videos on the main page with cute, dumb, young girls clinging to his side, calling him daddy and worshiping his cock to the point someone may copy and paste these girls. Cliche, sexy cliche. There is a certain alluring trait in that, for you he is something unobtainable. Would he look at you disgustingly if you tried to touch him? If you tell him how your fingers find their way to your pussy every time? Inwardly you thanked god on your knees for people not being able to read your mind.
Also, it weirdly itches your brain. Like a bug bite to scratch.
And your mom isn’t the best woman out here, pissy over little things, always at the brink of bursting out, cause she knows better. Even better than a government agent. Something is not right and everyone on the street will be hearing that. Leon is not the type to involve himself deeply in arguments, his job fucks his brains enough, so it is natural to learn to ignore shit thrown at him. Like second nature and he can let off steam in other ways anyway.
Leon is in your room, you thought he left the house and was on one of the many business trips. To be honest, a man can’t have so many of them, probably cheating with a much more pleasant woman than your mom. Not with you. At the same time, a relief and not.
“Eh…?” You didn’t catch his words. Your gaze darted around his face, but never lingering on one spot - avoiding his blue eyes. Blue eyes are scary, intimidating - they drill into everyone’s souls and look lifeless.
But he is so pretty.
Focus. Why is he in your room?
Per se it is hard to speak with someone else, you don’t know what you missed in your forming years, maybe there was a book of written rules everyone has learned by heart and you missed that opportunity. Unlucky. Even worse when the person in front of you looks like he is supposed to be a porn star. A man with a big chest and these features are enough to make your knees weak. He has those shoulders you have only seen on Instagram models. Or in porn. Always legs placed on them.
“A gift” he repeats, pointing with his head to the little bag he put on your bed. Slowly stepping closer and sitting down. The bed dips slightly, making your body tense. “I brought you a gift.”
A gift. Did he buy it? If you were a dog, your ears would be perked up and your tail swishing in excitement, but maybe, unfortunately for you, there is no need for them - your expression shows whatever is on your mind. You didn’t notice how his eyes were still drilling into your frame, like a heavy weight on your shoulders. He expects something.
Your fingers reach for the bag or try to cause the attempt to be cut by the slap on your hand.
“Atta”Leon clears his throat, the low sound pulls you out of focus on the bag and the images of a possible gift. Fuck, he is still here. “What you should say?” He presses, his own voice is low, with a lilt of irritation slipping through - sounds rich and hot, like a good whiskey would taste.
Right, being thankful, AND respectful - whatever your mom has taught you. Even though you suck at talking it feels like even such a simple task is awkward and would be a pitiful attempt to appear normal.
“… Thank you” Not daring to look into his face. Hard. Your words come out of your mouth quietly, feel foreign too. Speaking always feels alien.
He cradles your face, not having another way but to meet his eyes. So close and filling your senses to the point you just freeze. There is a clear smell of alcohol, maybe whiskey. His fingers are rough contrasting with the subtle tenderness of his grip. The bed cracks a little bit louder this time and you realize he is looming over you. And you tense, instinctively your hands come up to try to push him away.
“Shhh, shhh, I’ve got you, sweetheart” his thumb strokes softly your cheek, keeping you aware of how close he is. Too close, you can count every curve of his lashes, a scar on his cheek. His lips. They look kissable, a little bit dry today. Your mom said men shouldn’t use lip balm, it makes them gay. You don’t think that’s the case.
Your breathing hitches deep in your lungs, it feels like he is going to kiss you. Or not? You can’t bring yourself to move away when his hand firmly touches your waist, gripping it so securely before moving lower, to rest on your thigh - he explores your body like a map. Is that a dream? What should you do? Everything feels like it doesn’t happen to you, like a bad movie and you are just the watcher. Embarrassingly, your clit throbs with the need to be touched.
“Will you help me, mm?” Leon asks quietly and you exhale. Without too many thoughts, you nod. Finally, fewer thoughts - less mangy sensations. “A favor for a favor.”
You are unsure. You are never sure actually. 20s and a virgin, hopeless one. Since forever your mind stopped creating unrealistic expectations of the possible scenario of losing your virginity, still… you imagined this differently.
“Sure everyone who has touched you doesn’t know shit” Leon speaks in a honey-like voice buttering you to give in. His hand squeezes your thigh, leaving a big void in your brain.
Not like you are going to deny him cause words don’t come out, they never do, your mouth is so useless cause all it can do is just show a meek half-smile and not protest. Leon seems to catch on that quickly. In chaste kisses his lips are hot and he presses them against your cheeks just to slowly lower to the angle of your jaw. But there is nothing behind that, no affection or love you’ve seen in movies or read in books. He kisses your skin disinterested, in a lazy way to feign a desire to please you. Like he needs you, maybe deep down that’s true, cause it’d be so much easier to catch a girl for a night in the bar. Or to pay for sex.
Leon doesn’t care, that’s too many thoughts to focus on, too many worries. The only thing he is after is his pleasure, whatever you get off of isn’t something he considered. Your skin is soft underneath his lips, that’s inviting. Its softness is exciting, he wants to touch you even more and squeeze you like a plush toy. Still, avoiding your lips like the plague you stay unmoved, letting him spread your legs apart while keeping a firm grip on your chin - so your gaze wouldn’t get away, he needs you to face him for now.
His blue eyes wander around your face briefly, searching for something - maybe consent, or similar to that. But all he can see is an insecure mess, trying to hide how much his attention is fluttering, while your pupils are wide - he can see his reflection there too. And this burns even more the irrevocable desire in his body, hardening painfully his cock in the jeans. The fly isn’t even zipped, still, it doesn’t remove uncomfortable straining. So pent up. He needs to let steam off, he needs to fuck someone who isn’t going to do the same with his brains after that.
To remove your shorts is easy, underwear too, his gaze abandons your face to focus on important matters - your pussy, to let off this frustration, to fuck finally. You are so easy, he can move you around or touch you without any squeak from you, feeding on his own selfish desires and delusions.
Something is not right. It is disappointing. Almost hurting his ego, men are fragile creatures after all. You are not wet, well, you are, but not wet enough to be considered ready for his cock. This isn’t a big deal, a spit of saliva and quick thrust is enough. Still, a girl like you should be grateful for even quick kisses and a touch from him. And you seem to be grateful, he can see this from your eyes and tensed expression - still not enough. The right girl would kiss the floor he walked, worship him, and treat him well. You are a little bit confused, but nothing a quick sex can fix, right?
He pins you against the mattress. In no time adjust your legs, pulling them to your chest. His hand pushes your head to the side to not see your face, not like it would be on his sight anyway, he is focused on other things - not on you, nor your pleasure. Your legs twitched as soon as he spat down on your pussy, the weird feeling of his saliva clinging to your lips - the difference between temperatures, how it is colder than your skin. Easy and free, it would be useless to waste lube and any time on you. His free hand grips your hip tightly, angling it to finally plunge his cock into your hole.
It is a quick thrust, no adjustment, no slow buildup - nothing. Not giving enough time to realize the contact of his tip with your hole - his cock fills you up intoxicatingly, to the point your head becomes dizzy, and your body tenses around him, clenching tightly in a vice-like grip.
“That’s a good girl, good puppy” He breathes out, giving a sharp thrust to see your face twists. Filling you to the hilt, the tip of his cock kisses your uterus and every possible trashing or worm out of this will lead only to his pleasure - a light shift of his hips and his cock grinds against your cervix. Your legs twitch, almost arching from the weirdest sensations - squirming pleasure mixed with pain, if someone asked you to describe it’d be similar to a billion butterflies fluttering in your womb as your body becomes not yours, too weak for sweet right buttons to press. Too bad you don’t miss his own expressions: how his eyes roll, enjoying how good your pussy spasms around him. Like it was made for him. For his cock.
He stretches your walls quickly, in a way you bite your lip so hard - the taste of iron mixes with the suffocating sensation, confusing you and almost worsening your panic, thinking it may be just a nosebleed. Or you are bleeding, it feels like you are being torn apart and you can not move. Your hole clenches tightly, searching for a little time to adjust, slow pull out of his cock and you can feel every one of his veins dragging against your walls. The little resistance would worsen this, you aren’t sure you should fight, but something tells you - you deserve this.
Tears well up easily in your eyes, not even noticing the sudden wetness on your cheeks, too focused on his dick inside you.
He drags it out slowly now until only the tip remains inside you - still uncomfortably stretching. There is something twisted in the way it pleases him to see how your hole tries to adjust around him. How it clings to every unevenness of his dick, your pussy twitches and pulses at every little touch, how it leaves wet trails and… blood?
“Ohh. Your first or not used to real man, huh?”He sighs with wider eyes, there is no surprise, just amusement. Looking down at his cock, the light traces of blood on his skin. You are a virgin, or he just tore you cause you were unprepared. Not like he cared, not his mess to clean. “Too bad I am not stopping”
Not really expecting an answer from you, but not to hear your squeaks or sobs anymore, his hand creeps to rest on your mouth. He shoves his cock back and the pain returns. Not as overwhelming as it was before, still in a weird way. You liked the thought of being degraded, to be slapped, and treated the same as those girls in porn. It scratches the feeling of unworthiness so well. So right too, like your spot is to be mistreated without any other options. But now, you don’t know how to even deal with this, it is hard to even try to make it feel good - you don’t have any idea how.
Leon fucks you as he wants, deep and selfishly, not giving too much time to breathe in. This is first, this is different, this is everything you didn’t expect it to be. And he wouldn’t let you have any other way anyway - but hey, it makes him feel good, no? The thought appears like a light bulb, pulsing in your head just to slightly ease your worries. Again, using dumb, stupid, and useless you, your body, makes him feel good.
You make him feel good.
“Yea, that’s a good fucking face, babe” Leon grunts again, addicting desire creeps up in his chest as you weakly sob into his hand. Tears are sexy, no matter the reason behind them - too rough? Women like rough anyway. Too good? Of course, he knows his ways with women. Bad? You don’t know shit, an invalid opinion.
“Pretty when you cry, keep that face on” he is so close now to you, leaning over and his fingers dip into your cheeks to force your gaze to meet his. To see better your ruined and tearful face. His warm tongue presses against your cheek and any trails of your rolling tears disappear under his mouth - his cock pulses inside you at the taste of your tears. A grain of saltiness. And nothing. This is sexy, this is addicting and he is the reason for these pretty wet eyes.
You twitch with a loud gasp, muffled under his hand. He is so close, that is impossible to ignore how rough and messy his thrusts become. Deeply burying himself into your pussy, and your body isn’t yours anymore. The way it clenches around him, enticing a groan over you, like an addict getting that sweet shot of heroin. His cock twitches, you can feel it even better now, like your bodies become one at this point. You aren’t sure if there isn’t a thin layer of tissue, but it wouldn’t be surprising to get a visible outline of his cock.
You try to reach for your clit, to be selfish for once to end up useless again. Leon doesn’t care, as his weight presses on your body to hit the deeper angle, and your attempt is thrown out of the window. This is a fuzzy feeling, humiliating in its nature, as the sudden action electrifies your body with pleasure and guilt. Pleasure cause his dick hits soo well your spongy spot, he fits sooo well in your pussy, knowing every right spot to hit to twist your expression and guilty cause you shouldn’t feel pleasure. Overwhelming, too much happens - you can’t even focus on yourself for once. He is licking away your tears. Leon is so sweet, affectionate and caring, oh my god! - one of a billion thoughts flooded in your brain, just to be hit out of your head after a rough thrust. Leon is so sweet and so thoughtful. He likes you, right?
Keeping the pace steady as the only sound fills your room is the skin-slapping one, every time his hips connect with yours - his balls slap your ass. And you arch into him, involuntarily trying to grasp a little bit of pleasure from this situation - the little friction between your clit and his happy trail every time his hips slam, even briefly sending a jolt through your body.
“Fuck… take it” Leon groans, breathing out heavily and letting it brush against your skin. He is overwhelmingly everywhere: inside your pussy, hitting your womb with every deep thrust, his weight presses on you while your eye contact with him remains forced, drilling holes in your face now. “your dumb wet face… keep it, gonna cum”
Not like you can keep your tears in, they keep coming, persisting your pathetic image in his eyes. You are so messy for him, with wet trails of his saliva mixed with your tears and with a clear intent to let him take whatever he wants from you. The sight tightens his balls as orgasm approaches like a quick tidal wave, his cock buries deep inside with the last slam. It twitches inside you, keeping you full, not only with his dick, but now his warm cum fills your pussy almost to the brim, his mind is blank - focused on how his cock pumped rope after rope inside you. First penetration, first creampie, he is first everything.
Leon slowly pulls out of you, a loud squelching sound accompanied by a weak whimper from you - there is a silence between you both, only heavy breathing. Light cracks as the surface of the bed becomes even - Leon isn’t next to you anymore, and neither he is going to let you get your high. Too much work. Less likely it is even possible, it felt foreign, like a knife in the old wound, rummaging in it only to leave a black scar to bleed.
His hand ruffles your hair as a last act of whatever happened, maybe it is affection or maybe he feels guilty to intrude your little world with his selfish desire. You wish it is both, to believe that someone wanted you finally even just to let off the steam, just to use you. Action so sweet and unexpected, it pulls you back, more aware of chills seeping into your bones as the remains heat of his body withdrew from you, like a wave washing off the footsteps on the sand - it may be a false memory, a dream of something that didn’t happened.
And just to leave you alone, all lonely to clean the mess he caused. Not like you are going to complain; there is no energy or right to do that. You cried it out, even anything similar to tears can’t get out anymore.
Your eyes hurt from it, and tears eat every moist spot leaving them dry. So strange, how can tears dry so easily in your eyes? Feels like sand was thrown in your face. Your trembling hands try to open the bag, it should be something nice - not every day you get a gift. A dreadful and sinking feeling fills your stomach at the sight of it being empty. The inside is empty. There is nothing. No gift.
And you feel empty too, maybe emptier than the giftless bag without him here.

"You’ve been noticed”
Fuck it *cryptidfies your Dib*
Fun fact: Due to mutations Dib’s physical ability to show facial expressions degraded so much that now he’s forever stuck with a smile on his face. The absolute maximum he can do now is blink and unhinge his jaws to bite you :}. Ofc he can’t speak as well, so the only way to tell in what state of mind he might be is observing his body language and listening closely to a wide range of monstrous noises and roars he’s able to produce. Would you try to pet him btw? :3
CW // semi-vent text below I guess
Yeah I remembered I have my own AU ahaha… ok I never forgot I just have love-hate relationships with creating any kind of AU’s (aka I absolutely love fantasising about it in my head and daydreaming long-ass scenarios related to it, but when it comes to actually sharing any of it publicly… idk I’m just always so ashamed to share any of my personal ideas, even tho I wanna do it badly cause I can’t just keep it all inside my head forever. I wanna get rid of this shame finally so I’m gonna start trying to share at least something related to it again. I’m not even gonna try and do something extra complex and cool out of this AU, I don’t even have enough powers to actually create some kind of masterpiece of a story. Every time I tried doing so it just burned me out quickly. That’s also part of the reason why I’m shameful to share my ideas — cause when I look at other people’s AU’s they’re all so… thought-out, complex, polished, and usually there’s like 1000-page fic to go along with an AU. I’m aware I have nothing to offer compared to this so it usually adds to my embarrassment about myself. Well, fuck it all at this point, I just wanna draw my silly little mutant and have fun with it, why can’t i do that? I know I put those limits by myself for no reason that my AU has to be “perfect” or else it’s not worth showing, and I gotta be the one who breaks this burden I created. Fuck shame, fuck all possible hate comments I might receive, I just want to freely share all my ideas I’m passionate about, no matter how cringe or gross they are. I’m just too tired to hold myself anymore.)

When it comes to raising Jinx and giving her advice, Silco uses his own life experiences as a guide to approach her life. This is clearly highlighted in the baptism scene. Prior to this point Silco and the audience have seen how Jinx is struggling to confront and handle her past. Silco gives her the advice to let it go so that way she won't feel the burden of it anymore and she can just focus on who she is in the present, and her future. He tells her that who she is in the current moment is perfect and acceptable and that embracing who she is will be the only way for her pain to ease. Silco says all of this because that's what worked for him. When he was able to let go of his past with Vander and focus on who he was post betrayal and focus on the nation of zaun, he became stronger. This seems to have worked for Silco, but it doesn't work for Jinx no matter how hard she tries and I think I just realized why.
Silco seemingly has no idea why Vander betrayed him. Living with that big of an unknown is a terrible thing to live with. The brain likes to have answers and it'll easily go mad without them. And this seems to be what happened to Silco. Silco has this very weird perception about his identity. It feels very rigid and unnatural and it's because it's more armor than it is authenticity. Silco doesn't know why Vander treated him like a monster that day, but if it's a monster he wants it's a monster he'll get. Living with uncertainty is extremely difficult but in a way it can sometimes be easier to accept than the truth. This is why Silco seems so well adjusted in his new identity. He can either be bothered by what he doesn't know or he can just let it go, and he chose to let it go in order to focus on what really mattered to him.
Jinx tries and fails to fully construct a new identity throughout arcane. She does use the "jinx persona" as armor, just how silco uses the "eye of zaun persona" armor, but she cracks in her resolve frequently. She wants to leave the last behind like how Silco does, but she can't. This is because of a very clear distinction between her and Silco. Although these two have a similar trauma, Jinx actually knows why she was abandoned, versus silco does not.
"Why did you leave me?"
"Because you're a Jinx!"
Jinx knows exactly why she was abandoned. She was given a direct answer. And the truth is brutal. The idea that Jinx is a curse upon everyone is something that is cemented in her brain. It is something she can't get rid of no matter how much she wants to. It would be easier to let it go if she didn't know but she does know. Jinx struggles to form a solid sense of self because this idea of her being a "jinx" is something that's always going to be a factor of any identity she forms. In every version of her, she ends up being a jinx in some way.

✦ I'M NOT YOURS
Tumblr media
✦ one shot ,, yoichi isagi x f!reader.
Tumblr media
✦ content:: you— a corporate worker— suffer being head over heels for isagi yoichi— a pro soccer player.
for @shrii-kk, angst/hurt/no comfort, 603 words
additional: reader FUMBLES big time, author's first time writing angst w no happy ending, author does NOT have experience in romance, no beta we die like my motivation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You didn't know how.
You just fell in love.
Isagi Yoichi is a very likeable person. So how could you not fall for him? He's kind, friendly, everything sweet. You witnessed it firsthand, knowing him since all the way back when both of you were children. You've been in each other's lives longer than you haven't, it's a type of friendship a lot of people want.
But that friendship is killing you. Being just friends is killing you.
You try and fail to get rid of these consuming feelings, knowing you can't have him. It'd be selfish of you, weighing him down when he's set on achieving his dreams. Would he, a professional soccer player, spare his time for a relationship with a forgettable nobody like you? He could do so much better.
How selfish of you, wishing he'd be yours.
You distanced yourself— to not fall harder than you already have— you know you can't have him. First, you stopped contacting him as often, and then you tried not to cling to him, tried not to hang onto his every word like it was your lifeline. It was difficult to let go, especially when he was your reason to keep going, your reason to live. But you had to do it. You can't keep being a burden. The weight of a relationship could hold him back.
Hours turned to days of no contact, to the point that you found your last conversation to be weeks ago. You could tell he was concerned. Each digital letter spelled it out. Alas, you brushed it off, saying you were busy. With his hectic schedule and you purposefully avoiding him, that connection that was tightly bound started to drift apart.
You ignored the heavy mix of feelings consuming you like wildfire. You needed to let him go.
Tumblr media
The quest to distance yourself was successful.
It's been months, and you've convinced yourself that you got over him. You haven't interacted in a long while, so you shouldn't feel anything towards him, right?
So then why did your chest tighten at seeing those dark locks once again?
Isagi looked as surprised as you. After seasons of no contact, he was finally able to see you again— in an airport, walking across each other— the both of you were about to board on your flights to somewhere, a different location from the other. He called your name, it left nostalgic taste on his tongue.
You stared in silence. All the things you wanted to say, and all the things you shouldn't were stuck in your throat. So you settled for a simple nod of acknowledgement, forcing out a casual reply, one that held no trace of all the brewing emotions threatening to overflow within you. “How are you?” you asked, attempting to prompt a conversation for who knows what. Maybe you were desperate for some semblance of interaction, you hated that you missed him. You weren't supposed to.
He looks away, eyes flickering to somewhere else. “Haha, I'm doing fine. I got tournaments to win, games to play, planes to catch…” Isagi trails off, awkwardly fiddling with his hand. There, you spotted a glimpse of it— a golden jewelry adorning his ring finger— it caught the artificial lights of the bulbs above, and your gaze lingered onto it for a second longer than you'd like, the image burning into your mind.
It appears that the articles of him dating some big-shot star weren't just rumors. Hell, they were even engaged.
He's slipped through your fingers, and you let him go.
You weren't his. He wasn't yours.

:✮:·
Blood bloomed upon the snow.
One after the other, crimson drops fell to the ground. And fell and fell. The gash on my forehead had scabbed over the day before, but the tumble I'd taken down that slope an hour or so ago had ripped it right off. I could have stopped, wiped the blood from the side of my face and fashioned some kind of bandage. But there’d be no point.
My path stopped here.
The small clearing in the woods I’d stumbled into was beautiful in its barrenness. As good a place as any, I supposed.
My bruised and battered body screamed when I pressed my back against the nearest tree and dropped inelegantly to the earth. The snow cushioned the impact, but it began to seep into my jeans; dozens of frost-tipped pins pricking at my skin.
I sat there for a moment, transfixed by the indifferent incandescence of winter: so lethal yet so enrapturing. The snow that covered everything from the ground to the tree branches was a smothering weight and yet it glinted in the sun like diamond dust.
Blood from my head wound rolled down and got caught in my eyelashes. I blinked to get rid of it, but it only served to bathe that eye with a tinge of crimson. With an irritated huff I pulled off my glove and used it to wipe at my face. It was messy and sure to be smearing it about my skin, but in minutes that wouldn’t matter. I pulled the glove away and looked at it: stained red, some of it transferred onto my palm, but my eyes snagged on the dried, darkened blood beneath my fingernails that wasn’t mine.
It’s easy to tell yourself that killing in the interest of self-preservation is permissible. Or, at least, that it should not burden you: the snuffing out of a life. I’d always liked the idea of that: snuffing out. To extinguish a flame. It felt fitting when applied to people, seeing as we're all just stardust; detritus from a dead thing that burned in the sky.
We wink out just like stars. What human beings had used to navigate upon land and sea for millenia, were just dead things. We found our way thanks to bodies burning in the darkness.
I’d left behind enough bodies to form whole new constellations. There wasn’t one of them that I regretted.
I’d had someone to protect. Someone worth saving. And I had. Over and over again I had saved that little boy. But none of that had accumulated into some lasting cosmic protection, or formed armour over his skin. None of it had stopped him from dying.
I’d saved him, until I hadn’t. Until I’d watched him die. Let him die.
He’d always been small for his age, but his hands had felt smaller still in my own bloodstained ones, his unblemished skin swallowed up by the crimson smeared on me.
My nephew had been born into grief. He’d been placed, red-faced and squalling, into my arms instead of my sister’s. In the moment, I hadn’t been able to look at him, a led-weight in my arms, screaming for breath as my sister drifted away.
Too much blood.
I’d known it, but I'd still stood there, my sister’s baby in my arms as I screamed at someone- everyone to save her. I’d screamed at the fucking world.
Someone must have taken him from my arms then. I don’t remember it happening, only that my memories then skip like a scratched record to me kneeling at my sister’s side and squeezing her hand. She’d been so exhausted that her head hadn't so much as turned to me, rather it had lolled to the side. Her gaze had been distant and untethered as though she couldn’t see exactly where I was, only knew I was there because of her hand in mine.
“You have to protect him.” She’d begged, her voice hoarse, tears trailing down her face. “He’s yours- your family. Promise me.”
I’m no longer sure if I said it back before her eyes drifted closed. I used to be ardent in the belief that I had, but over the years I started to think maybe her eyes had already been shut when I’d finally said it. Maybe I’d still been kneeling by her side, her hand cooling on my own and the sun set behind me when I let out a sob and said: ‘I promise.’
I had named him. Sophie had told me that she wouldn't feel right to give him one without having met him first. She'd wanted it to suit him. So, I'd looked at him and done my best. Fred, after our grandfather, because I hoped he’d be just as kind as him. I hoped that I was capable of raising him to be kind.
I’d raised him to die.
Perhaps it was my punishment to outlive them. To live long enough that I started to forget. Already my sister’s face had started to blur, the tides of time wearing down her features. Like waves against a rock face.
Everything is always crumbling to pieces. Life is a perpetually disintegrating thing.
It was time for me to disintegrate, to let death wash over me like a wave over a sand castle. When it receded, the thousands of pieces of me would be dragged back into the deep, with no evidence left on the shore that I had existed at all.
I could have just laid down in the snow and shut my eyes, let the cold subsume me, purify me in a wash of white. Drift off in a snow drift. It even sounded nice.
Just like falling asleep. Isn’t that how hypothermia was meant to end. Peacefully?
As tempting as it was, I knew that I couldn't do that. I didn’t deserve an end so… quiet . Not when all those I'd loved had died in such pain and so afraid. The people I had known who were the least deserving of suffering.
The least I could do for them was pull the trigger on myself.
With my body now quaking with the cold, assailed by the dampness soaked into my clothes, I pulled the gun out of the waistband of my jeans. I let out a breath, watched it appear and then disappear in the air before me. Like human lives: blink and you’ll miss them.
I pressed the barrel to my temple, the metal so cold it was a biting kiss.
I shut my eyes. My finger fell upon the trigger.
Snap! A branch broke close by.
It’s funny how even when humans are ready to die, our bodies can still react to imminent danger. Fight. Flight. Freeze. I’d always favoured the first.
My eyes flew open, the gun fell from my temple as I swung it out and pointed it at the figure that had emerged through the trees. No- figures . There were two of them.
Two men moved towards me, similar in aspect but with markedly different expressions.
The one that stepped through the trees first, dressed in a thick tan coat had his gloved hands closed around a rifle that was pointed right at me. He had dark, distrusting eyes that were narrowed into a scowl. His hair was snow-dusted and shot-through with grey.
“Put it down.” He snapped, voice forceful but calm. Texan, if I had to guess. He nodded at the gun in my hand as if I couldn’t have put two and two together.
I didn’t obey him, at least not right away. I watched him watching me and thought about letting him put a bullet between my eyes.
It could be my coward’s way out. If I kept the gun in my hand for even a few seconds more, he would fire his. I could see the promise of it in his eyes. He could finish the job for me. But Sophie and Fred deserved more. I couldn’t be a coward for their sake. I had to be the one to end myself, not a stranger.
I uncurled my rapidly freezing fingers and dropped the gun. The impact sent up a small dusting of snow.
The man grunted disapprovingly, his eyes never leaving mine. “Throw it out of reach.”
“I’d rather not.” My voice was hoarse from dehydration and my throat was still shredded from all of the screaming I'd done when Fred…
I was going to need the gun once the two men had left and I really didn’t want to have to get up again. I wasn’t really sure I could.
The man was having none of it. His face tightened with anger.
“Wasn’t a request.” He snarled. “Now do it.”
I couldn't help the scoff that bubbled up. He had just come across me about to shoot myself, the precaution felt unnecessary. Then again, being distrusting had probably allowed him to live long enough to get the grey in his hair.
At last, the other man stepped forward. He was younger, his hair still mostly dark, but there was a kinship in their features. His deep brown eyes looked me over, not unkindly, before settling on his companion.
“Joel.” He said pointedly. I didn’t need to know him to discern what he left unsaid.
It’s not us that she’s a danger to.
Then, his eyes slid over to the object clasped in the other hand. Pressed against my chest was Fred’s teddy bear, it’s fur matted with blood. I’d been carrying it for my entire journey and ice crystals had formed upon it. The teddy was the only thing I’d brought with me besides the gun: I had no need for anything else l where I was going.
Joel’s gaze followed the other man’s and for a moment, he went utterly still. Only for a moment though, because it wasn’t long before his eyes snapped back to my own and he repeated his order:
“Throw the gun out of reach.”
With an exhausted sigh I did as I was told. The moment the thump of the gun landed, the other man moved forward and pushed down the barrel of Joel’s gun so it pointed at the ground.
“Sorry about my brother.” He said, shooting the brooding man a reproachful look before looking to me. His smile was tentative. “I’m Tommy and this is Joel.
I nodded stiffly, not in the mood for greetings. I just wanted them gone. And yet, when I spoke it wasn’t to tell them to fuck off and let me die.
“You’re from Jackson.” I said.
It wasn’t a hard leap, we couldn’t be more than an hour outside of it.
“That a question?” Joel spat.
I didn’t acknowledge the walking stormcloud and instead kept my attention on his brother. It wasn’t that I was deluded enough to think he was in any way kinder, the way he stood told me enough: just as willing to shoot me if I looked at them the wrong way.
“Yes, we are.” Tommy confirmed. His brother’s head whipped around, but he was unbothered by the glare he received.
“We were heading there.” I uttered mournfully.
We . I must have been more delirious than I realised.
Thankfully, neither of the men pressed me on my blunder. I suppose the way they had found me and the blood-stained bear in my hand made the absence at my side clear enough.
“We’re on our way back.” Tommy said. “You could come with us.”
“Tommy!” Joel closed the gap between himself and his brother, grabbing his arm and jostling him.
Honestly, I was also a little startled. It took the exchange of a couple of sentences for him to extend such an offer?
Tommy shrugged off Joel’s grip. “That’s not your decision to make big brother.”
“Tommy, look at her! With all the shit she’s covered in, she could be bit and we wouldn’t see it. You want to drag an infected into Jackson?”
“Not infected.” I sniped back, not really knowing why I bothered.
Something about his contempt stoked the dying fire within me. There was no need to be a bastard about the woman you’d just stopped from blowing her brains out.
Joel’s eyes returned to me, sharpened with a new edge. “If you’re not bit, then why were you–”
His speech stopped abruptly, his mouth clamped shut before the rest of his sentence could tumble out. I could make an educated guess at what it would have been: Why were you about to kill yourself?’
“That’s hardly the only reason for it.” I grumbled, answering his incomplete query. “Now, seeing as you made me get rid of it, I'd appreciate it if you could pass me my gun before you go.”
Whatever wary confusion had possessed Joel to even start to enquire about my motives disappeared and his scowl returned.
“Get it yourself.”  He barked. His hand shot out and he grabbed his brother’s arm again, tugging him back. “Tommy, time to go.”
With that Joel turned away, already marching through the trees. I entertained the thought that if he found anything in his path, instead of going around he’d just walk straight through it. He seemed the type: stubborn to a fault. Stubborn to the point of pain.
Tommy, as if repelled from his brother like a magnet, moved in the opposite direction and right towards me. His heavy boots crunched on the snow. As he came to a stop, he slung his rifle over his shoulder.
He opened his mouth, then closed it, clearly trying to find the right words. “Look- whatever you were about to do…I know that ‘aint any of my business.”
“Tommy!” Wherever Joel was, his brother’s body blocked my view, but I could feel the glare passing through his brother and into me like a laser beam.
Tommy ignored him and moved closer, then dropped to a knee in front of me.
“Our lives are all we’ve got a right to anymore, so yours is to do with what you will. But, that’s not a decision to be made lightly and you look like you’ve been through it. How about you come back with us, stay for the night, have a hot meal at least?”
I narrowed my eyes in suspicion. He had no reason to offer me this, to try and coax me to Jackson at all. At least, no good reason. No one made altruistic offers, not anymore.
Then again, I could guess that this man had taken his fair share of lives. Maybe he’d changed, or was changing and thought that stopping a stranger from dying would do a little to balance his scales.
I could understand that urge. I’d thought Fred could redeem me. Make me nurturing when I’d never had the inclination. Kids will do that to you. Make you want to be better than you had ever considered possible.
I’d tried my best. I really had. But I’d never escaped the feeling of being a poor substitute for my sister; my care and compassion so pitiful compared to what she could give. I’d never had a deep well in that regard.
I suppose I wouldn’t have known until Fred was older if he’d truly felt loved by me. Sure, he’d told me he did, but he was a little boy and I was all he had.
It had been a selfish, self-indulgent fear of mine that he’d grow up, meet other people, perhaps see other families and realise how poorly I measured up; that he’d been deprived by me. How desperately I wanted to return to those anxieties that had felt so crippling at the time. Fear meant he was alive.
Now there was just…nothing. I served no purpose. There was no point to anything at all.
But I also had no fight left to give and I had a feeling that despite what he said, Tommy wasn’t going to let me refuse him so easily. I also doubted that he’d retrieve my gun for me: passing me the weapon that I would use to end it all might feel too much like culpability for a man who seemed to have a conscience.
So, I gave in. I granted a stay of my own execution and nodded.
Tommy smiled warmly as he stood up. “Come on, we got our horses tied up nearby. You can ride with me.” He leant down and offered me a hand, easily hauling me to my feet.
Weak and exhausted, I staggered to the side, but Tommy’s hold stopped me from falling. The wind blew, drying the blood that had slowed to a trickle on the side of my face.
“Woah, easy.” He said, looping one hand through my arm to anchor me to him. “You good?”
“Fine.” My breathlessness betrayed me.
“We gotta worry about anyone coming after you? Your blood’ll be like a trail of breadcrumbs in the snow.” Tommy guided me to turn around and we walked towards the treeline. Joel was waiting there, his gun still gripped tightly as he watched his brother and I advance.
“No one’s following me.” I assured him, fighting against the images that flashed behind my eyes. Bullets fired in my mind and then ricocheted off the inside of my skull.
“You sound very sure.” Joel said flatly as Tommy led me past him, he fell into step behind us. It was like having a dog snapping at my heels.
I bristled at the hostility in his voice, it was a challenge that I usually would never have been able to resist but there was no point in fighting him.
“They’re dead.” I answered bluntly.
I’d killed every last one of them.
Their blood had mingled with Freddie’s on my hands. It had felt like a desecration but it hadn’t stopped me.
Both brother’s made no further comment. When Tommy told his brother to fetch my gun, I was surprised that he complied without verbalising any objection. Although he didn’t give it back to me, just tucked it into the back of his jeans.
We remained silent after that, right up until we reached their horses. I joined Tommy on his, his, his brother striking out in front and brooding on his own mount.
When the wall’s of Jackson came into view I failed to fight back tears. I’d been so close to getting Fred to safety.
So close.
:✮:·
Once I had the two jagged edges of the gash on my forehead pressed together between my fingers, I gritted my teeth and pushed the needle through. The skin was already livid and raw, but a fresh drop of blood beaded there thanks to the pressure I was exerting. As I made the first stitch, I caught the sympathetic wince of the woman behind me in the mirror’s reflection.
“Not good with needles?” I asked, already back to sealing myself shut. It was another pointless endeavour, like glueing a shattered teacup back together while knowing that I was only going to drop it again, but acquiescing to it had seemed to appease Tommy. He’d also assured me that his wife wouldn’t hear of it being left unattended.
That had proved true enough when Maria had arrived at Jackson’s infirmary. Tommy had sent someone to pass along word of the stray he’d brought home.
Maria had looked me over with guarded concern, assuring me that I was welcome, while making it very clear that stepping out of line would be met with swift consequences. I admired her sternness: it was so clearly rooted in the desire to preserve the remarkable place that had been built.
I wasn’t entirely convinced that I hadn’t passed out in the snow back and was just imagining all of it.
Jackson felt like a dream that only my dying mind would have the luxury of conjuring up. I’d walked through the streets with Tommy and seen…normalcy. A sort of mundanity that had become a fanciful thing in my mind.
“Not good at watching someone stitch themself up, I guess.” Maria answered. She shifted so that she was leaning back against the wall, one hand cradling her belly. She couldn't have been far off her due date.
“I’ve never had anyone to do it for me.” I admitted, piercing my skin again.
I’d had to fight them to be able to tend to myself. Maria had insisted they had someone who knew what they were doing, but I couldn’t stand the idea of it: a stranger leaning over me, breathing on me for an extended period of time. Too close. Too prolonged. Just the thought made my gut twist.
It was best that I did it myself.
“It’s hard to accept help, at first. But you’ll adjust.” Maria’s tone was soft yet knowing.
I focused intently on the movements of the needle, forcing down a scoff at her words.
“Trusting people to have good intentions is asking for trouble.”
Maria nodded. “Out there, sure. But there are good people here. Families just trying to make it through.”
My grief was as volatile and shifting as the sea and I found myself biting back a nasty retort about it being pretty damn easy for the people here to make it through, safe behind high walls with their children, while somewhere else another mother lost hers.
The people of Jackson weren’t surviving, they were living . That was a luxury. And while it was a beautiful thing, practically incomprehensible given the state of the world, it shone too brightly for me to stand. I found it blinding. I wanted to throw dirt on it, smear it with filth to cover the shine.
When you’ve lived so long by crawling through the dirt, the sight of cleanliness is disconcerting. Almost uncanny.
As I came to the last stitch, my open wound now a raised edge, puckered and tied together with thread, I let myself meet Maria’s eye through the mirror.
“Look, I do appreciate the welcome, but there’s no need to go to any trouble.”
Maria waved my words away. “We’ve got enough empty houses to go around.”
Houses.
Not a room in an abandoned building where i’d have to barricade the door, or a tent that never felt remotely safe enough to get any sleep in. Or out in the open, beneath the stars.
Wherever Fred and I had found ourselves, I had never slept. I always ended up just watching him, his little chest rising and falling beneath his sleeping bag.
Oblivious to my wandering mind, Maria continued. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, we do have a process. The council–democratically elected–would want to talk to you if you decided to stay with us. You got any skills?”
“Define skills.” I said, as I tied off the thread and reached for the scissors that gleamed in the metal tray by my hand.
“Hunting. Shooting. Would be nice to have another person with a green thumb.”
put down the scissors and turned to face Maria. I leant back against the table, crossing my arms over my chest. It had long been my instinct to take a defensive stance.
“I can hunt.” I told her. “I can make traps and snares and I’m good with a gun.” I didn’t know why I was entertaining Maria’s inquiries, but acting as if I was someone intent on surviving seemed like it would lead to less resistance.
The last thing I wanted to do was solicit questions about what had happened to me. To Fred. Questions about why her husband and brother-in-law had found me alone in the woods, clutching a bloody teddy bear and readying to shoot myself. Tommy must have told her.
Before he had excused himself, husband and wife had ducked out into the hallway to talk and while Maria hadn’t treated me like a broken thing once she’d returned, there was something in her eyes that amounted to understanding.
“How good with a gun?” Maria asked, appraising me inquisitively.
“Very good.” I admitted matter-of-factly. “Our dad was a marine. Taught us to shoot long before the world went to shit.”
“Us?” Maria pressed tentatively.
Shit.
Seven years after my sister died and I still thought in terms of ‘us’ and ‘we’. Ours.
“My sister.” I offered, hoping my bluntness would crush the topic of conversation before it could grow. Thankfully, it did.
We fell into a brief silence that bordered on comfort before Maria pushed off the wall.
I tensed instinctively at the movement, my hand itching to reach for the gun that Joel hadn’t returned. I’d need to ask Tommy about that.
Maria woman clearly noted my reaction, but carried on as normal.
“So…” She began with a smile. “Have I convinced you to stay? For the night, at least?”
“That’s what your silence was: you convincing me?”
“With some people, words hurt more than they hinder.” Maria said simply. “It has to be up to you. So?”
“Okay.” I said slowly. “One night.”
Maria had started moving towards the door before I'd finished my sentence. “Great! Let’s get you home. I’ll find you some clean clothes too.”
As Maria walked out, beckoning me to follow, I released a long sigh. I didn’t like the sound of that: your home. It had the distinct whiff of someone who wasn’t done trying to convince me, in silence or otherwise.
If only the Miller brother’s had arrived in the clearing just ten seconds later. I’d already be far from there, far from myself and all that I had done. And all that I had failed to do.

Something about the house I was given broke through my numbness to inject a dose of sadness. It was small. Just one floor. But it held vestiges of the life that had been lived so long ago.
Lines were etched into the wooden door frame that led into the kitchen, marking the growth of ‘Katie’ . She’d reached the height of my belly button before any chance of a normal future had been snatched away from her. Maybe she was alive somewhere, now an adult taller than me, but hope was just self-deception. It made reality more bearable.
Then there were the cupboards that were full of mug’s, many of them chipped. One had ‘ World’s Best Mom!’ stamped across it.
Everything was covered in dust that had gathered since the last occupants had fled, only to be kicked up by my footsteps. It felt a bit like disturbing a tomb. Except there were no bodies, just an absence. But that’s what death was: an absence in the existence of those left behind.
Maria had showed me to the house and then promptly left me to my solitude.
I attempted to settle down in the bed, curling up with the patchwork blanket I'd been given, but the softness of it was unpleasant.
I’d gone too long moving from place to place with Fred and when there had been a bed–and there was usually only one–I had let him take it and slept on the floor, or in a chair. Sometimes, I sat with my back against the door all night.
Then there had been all of the camping we had done. It had felt strange calling it that, as if it had been a recreational activity rather than a necessity, but framing it that way had made it seem more like an adventure for my nephew.
All of which was to say, I lasted a pitiful amount of time in the bed before I was gathering up the blanket and the pillow and traipsing into the living room at the front of the house and settling down on the floorboards between the couch and the coffee table.
There were bay windows that looked out onto the street, but there were no curtains or blinds to close for any semblance of privacy. No matter, it meant I could see the stars.
I laid down, bathed in a moonbeam that streamed inside, but made no attempt to shut my eyes. I just stayed there and stared up at the damp stain on the ceiling. Once clouds crossed the moon and the room darkened, the stain became a pool of blood in my eyes, spreading and spreading and spreading.
:✮:·
Tommy had returned my gun to me on the morning of my first day in Jackson. And yet, three sunrises later, I was still alive and kicking. Well, not kicking, but I was breathing.
I hadn’t had a change of heart where the wastefulness of my life was concerned, I just…hadn’t ended it yet. I was just so fucking tired. Part of me had died back in that clearing I think, even though Joel and Tommy had stopped me pulling the trigger.
There were so many more kids in Jackson than I’d thought there’d be. I don’t know why it surprised me, but seeing all the chubby cheeks and gapped tooth smiles was salt in a gaping wound.
I couldn’t help but imagine Fred and his head of blonde curls amongst the little flock. I’d called him duckling for a long time, because when ruffled, his hair had looked like the fluffy down of a little bird.
He’d have been so happy in Jackson. Nervous, at first, because he had never grown up with kids his own age, but he’d have shaken the worry off in no time, buoyed by the prospect of friends.
We’d been so fucking close. So close to a type of happiness I’d thought died with the old world. Part of me hadn’t even believed that a place like Jackson could exist. A community where actual kindness could be found, polished to a shine; a point of pride instead of something people let gather dust in a dark corner of their mind.
It had been a dream. A wish that I'd made for the both of us, one that I’d repeated with every step that we had taken forward.
But it did it exist.
Just being there hurt .
And if there was one thing that was intrinsic to humans no matter what state civilization was in, it was that we’d hurt and be hurt. And pain led us to seeking out ways to numb it. It’s how we’d ended up with alcohol.
The Tipsy Bison was almost too close to the bar’s I had spent my early twenties in. All dark wood and dark walls, sticky booths and shitty lighting.
The back wall behind the bar was an explosion of discordant memorabilia, all fighting to catch your eye first: a shooting trophy, a tiny American flag, a clock with what looked like a submarine on it, a little anchor. Everywhere you looked something new.
With a heady buzz building behind my eyes, I looked up at the mirrors behind the bar, partially obscured by the empty bottles that cluttered up the shelf beneath it. There were fairy lights strung up on the ceiling and in the reflection, my blurred vision made them bleed into one pulsing, glowing mass.
I groaned and dropped my forehead down onto the bar, enjoying how cool the varnished wood felt. My stitched head wound stung at the impact, but I found a perverse thrill in it.
I thought if I stayed utterly still and tried my best to block out the noises of the other patrons, the headache might begin to abate. Then I would move, stumble back to the house I'd been given.
I thought my plan might just work, until someone gracelessly dragged out the empty stool beside me. It scraped against the floorboards and I felt the vibrations in my brain. I groaned as I sluggishly lifted my head to find the culprit.
The scar at Joel’s temple was the first thing my eyes fell upon. It was almost illuminated in the bar’s inconsistent lighting. His posture was rigid, making him seem somehow even more solid, like he weighed himself down to the extent that movement was a chore. A hulking immovable object.
“Quit it.” Joel groused. He didn’t so much as glance at me out of the corner of his eye, his attention reserved for the barman who’d already poured him a whisky.
I sat up a little straighter, narrowing my eyes at him. “What?”
“Quit fuckin’ staring.” He snapped in answer, still not deigning to meet my eye.
“Wasn’t staring.” I spat back.
“What would you call it, then?”
“Observing.”
Oh, and Joel really didn’t like that: the notion that I had been watching him actively. As if taking him in visually, learning even a little about him from it, was a kind of theft, a terrible, offensive transgression. He gripped his glass tighter, making the tips of his fingers turn white. He angled his head in my direction, not quite looking at me, but close enough.
“Nothing to observe.” He muttered resentfully.
It had been over a decade since I'd let myself get so drunk and it brought out an instinct to antagonise that I’d forgotten I possessed. I smiled nastily and leant a little closer to him.
“Are you under the impression that you’re invisible?”
“No.” He shot back. “Sure would be nice though.”
“Oh?”
“This conversation wouldn’t be happening.”
“You started it.”
Joel slammed his glass down into the bartop, some of the dark liquid spilled over onto his hand. “What are you, fuckin’ five years old?”
I didn’t answer. My heavy head became too much to bear so I dropped it back down into my folded arms. The energy the alcohol had given me was already spent.
As I expected, the silence suited Joel just fine and minutes passed without another peep. I started to entertain the thought that he’d never try to engage with me ever again but then…
“Do you not need to eat?”
I looked to look at him but didn’t lift my head up off my arms. “Feeling talkative now?”
Joel had gone back to looking at anywhere but me. He grunted in displeasure at my mockery but carried on. “Been five days, haven’t seen you in the mess hall once.”
Instead of answering him, I forced myself to sit up and called out to the bartender, pointing at my empty glass. But, when he approached, Joel’s hand reached out, enfolded the top of my glass and dragged it out of the man’s reach. And his generous pour.
“About time this one was cut off, Seth.”
I scowled and clumsily reached forward to snatch back the glass, but Joel just swept it up and away from me.
“You were happy to leave me to shoot myself in the woods, but you’ll stop me from drinking?” I seethed. I thought I had whispered, but the few heads that turned in our direction told me otherwise.
Joel tensed so severely I thought the glass might shatter in his grip. But after a second or two, he set down the empty vessel and retrieved his own drink and lifted it to his lips. He kept set his eyes forward and took an obnoxiously loud sip.
“Fine. Fucking asshole.” I mumbled as I slid off and snatched my coat off the back of the stool.
“What was that?” Joel asked sharply.
Emboldened by the alcohol and infuriated by him, I sidled right up beside him and leant onto the bar. My other hand fell on his arm and he actually flinched .
“I said, you’re a fucking asshole.” Before Joel could muster up much of a reaction, I pushed off the bar and sent a consternated Seth a weak smile. “Night.”
I lurched out into the street and had to steady myself against the wall, sucking in icy breaths that scratched their way down my throat like glass shards. Painful, but it helped me come back to myself enough to put one foot in front of the other and head for my house.
Shit.
My house.
It should have been ours: Mine and Fred’s. Our home.
 Never just mine.
:✮:·
It turned out that getting blind drunk didn’t just impair your vision, but also created such a fog in your mind that you forgot a lot of things. In my case, what I failed to remember as I staggered up the cracked stone path towards the house, was Maria’s warning that the wooden steps of the porch had rotted.
I was not exactly light of step at the best of times, but in my inebriated state, my footfalls may well have been able to crack concrete. So, when I stomped up onto the porch, my right foot went clean through the top step.
My stomach dropped and bile rose as I lurched forward. I was just barely able to catch myself and avoid breaking my nose against the wooden planks. My palms were abraded against the unforgiving surface, my skin riddled with splinters in an instant. I could feel something digging into my ankle and suspected that if I wasn’t so numbed by the alcohol, that I’d be experiencing at least a little pain.
“Fuck.” I grunted as I dragged myself up, pulling my ankle free of the hole. Once most of my body was on stable ground, I flopped down onto my back.
I shut my eyes and willed the world to stop spinning. The wind blew, drawing my attention to the exposed skin between my pant leg and my boot, upon which I could feel the trickle of blood.
Out in the open air with the stars glittering above, although obscured from my sight, I found myself beginning to feel oddly soothed. It was more of a familiar sleeping arrangement than the bed in the house that I’d rejected.
Which was probably why my eyes drifted shut.
:✮:·
A sharp kick against my leg woke me up.
My eyes fluttered open, only to find a dark mass standing over me. After a few more blinks, the nebulous shape began to shift into something more recognisable. Wide chest and broad shoulders, atop which sat a distinctly displeased face.
I couldn’t actually see his expression all that well, but it wasn’t exactly a hard leap to make once I realised that it was Joel.
Now sleep-addled as well as drunk, I was unwilling to be the first to break the silence. He must have realised this, because he spoke first. It sounded like he was under significant duress:
“Your steps have rotted.”
“Thanks for the heads up.” I slurred.
Joel gave no answer, but dropped down onto a knee beside my prone body, emitting a small grunt when the bone cracked.
“Feeling your age?” I asked, a smile tugging at the corner of my mouth.
“Shut up.”
I was, quite frankly, far too drunk, exhausted and frozen stiff to find to rouse myself to tell Joel to fuck off. The frigid night air had frozen my reservoir of rage. For now.
Despite that, when I felt cold fingers push up the bottom of my pant leg to expose my sticky blood to the night air, I kicked out at his hand. When the sole of my heavy boot made contact with Joel’s hand, he pulled it back with a hiss. “Go away.” I ground out, focusing on the way the now exposed scratches on my ankle stung.
Boots scuffed against wood as Joel rose to his feet, face contorted with displeasure. Before I could let out the sigh of relief at his anticipated departure, he kicked the side of my leg again.
“Can’t stay out here. Get up.”
“I’ll get up when you're gone.”
“No. You’ll pass out and freeze to death.”
“Just fucking let me, then! I’m nothing to you.” I hurled back at him, wincing at the resultant pain in my head.
Daughter, sister, aunt. Through every stage of my life, I had understood myself and my purpose through those titles. But now…I wasn’t anything to anyone. Just nothing .
The silence was drawn out just long enough, I thought he might have left and I was just so delirious I hadn’t heard his footsteps. But the next thing I knew a hand curled around my arm and I was hauled to my feet.
I wanted to curse him, to spit and claw at him, to turn my pain against someone other than myself and draw blood. Before Fred had died that’s what I would have done. But whatever the husk of who I was had left within it, it wasn’t the quickness to violence.
So, I let Joel drag me like a dog on a leash. He was rough. His fingers dug into my arm and he let me stumble over my own feet. He threw open the front door and stormed in, moving far too quickly for my drunken body to coordinate with. As we crossed over the threshold into the house, I tripped and would have ended up on the ground again if he hadn't pulled me to his side. He smelled of whisky and woodsmoke.
We moved down the hall at a jarring pace. It felt as though I was a piece of obsolete equipment that he was hauling around, and therefore he was uncaring about jostling me to the point that a screw or two came loose.
Thankfully, the little house didn’t give us much ground to cover before he was shoving me into the sitting room. When he came to an abrupt stop, I presumed that he was taking in the sight of my blanket and pillow on the floor, but when his hold on my arm eased up, I followed his gaze to the coffee table.
My gun sat atop the dusty surface and right next to it was Fred’s teddy bear, still stained even though I'd lost count of the number of times I'd scrubbed it. No industrial-strength stain remover at the end of the world.
I heard a short, sharp intake of breath and braced  myself for a cutting remark, but instead he returned to his man-handling. Joel grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me onto the couch. He then bent down, took hold of my calves and lifted them up, forcing me to twist around so that I was lying flat. When he pulled off my boots, I hissed at his unforgiving hold on my bleeding ankle.
He made no apology, just dropped my boot to the ground and proceeded to yank off the other one.
I laid still and stared up at the ceiling, silently begging that he’d leave without uttering another word. He stood at the end of the couch, watching me like I was a rat caught in a trap. His brown eyes were black in the darkness of the room.
“You got a bed. No good reason to be sleeping on the ground.”
Exhaustion had me back in its grip, so all I could manage as my eyes closed was a mumbled: “What would be a good reason?”
A disgruntled huff. “Don’t be a smartass.”
A heavy weight was tossed over me. I clawed at the fabric, pulling it down until my face was freed and sucked in a breath as if I'd actually been at risk of suffocating. He’d thrown the blanket over me.
My eyes darted around but only caught a glimpse of Joel’s back as he was stepping back into the hall. His footsteps receded and then there was the unnecessarily harsh opening and closing of the front door.
Had I been less intoxicated, the entire interaction would have likely been confounding, but in the state I was in I just sank down into the couch cushions and shut my eyes and thanks to the alcohol, fell right to sleep.
My wakeup call was the sun that speared through the window and landed in my eyes. It split my throbbing head in half like a block of wood. My mouth was like sandpaper and something throbbed angrily behind my eyes. A hangover at forty was a different beast altogether.
I’m not sure how long I stayed inert and wallowed in my self-inflicted sickness, but eventually I did find it in myself to sit up, I swung my legs off the couch and edged forward and as I did so, my eyes fell onto the coffee table.
Fred’s teddy bear was right where i’d left it, but my gun was missing.
:✮:·
Thanks to the tour Maria had given me, during which she’d pointed out her and Tommy’s home as well as ‘Joel and Ellie’s across the way’, tracking down the thief didn’t take long.
My knuckles rapped viciously against his door, exacerbating the symptoms of my hangover and my anger all at once.
Just as I started to contemplate kicking it in, the front door swung inward and Joel filled the gap. It was obscenely early and yet he was already dressed in jeans, another plaid shirt with its sleeves rolled half-way up his forearms. I knew I was a ghastly sight and his displeasure was evident, but I gave him no chance to express that verbally.
“Who the fuck do you think you are?”
“Watch your fuckin’ mouth when you’re at my goddamn door.” He bit back.
“Give it back.” I held out my hand, matching his hateful stare.
Joel didn’t try to deny it, he didn’t even blink before he turned around and stomped down his hallway. I waited at the threshold, unwilling to enter his space.
Joel returned with the gun already held out, but when I reached for it, he pulled it back and left my fingers to clutch at the air.
“Don’t be a fucking child.” When I lunged for the gun that now hung in the hand at his side, he enclosed his other one around my wrist.
“You plannin’ on using it?” His voice was strained, as if pressure was being exerted on his neck.
“No.” I sneered sarcastically. “I just think it makes a nice table decoration.”
Joel’s hold tightened and the pads of his fingers pressed into my pulse point. The touch lingered long enough that it felt like he was tracking my heartbeat, but he soon let go.
He did let me take back the gun then, but when I put my back to him he asked:
“Why bother?”
“What?” I wouldn’t turn back to speak to him. I didn’t know what expression he’d end up finding on my face.
Wooden floorboards creaked beneath him as he shifted in place. “Killing yourself here or out there- it makes no difference. Why come with us when Tommy asked? Just means someone has to clean up after you.”
I wanted to see it. I thought. It came to me only then, having not really considered it before that moment. I wanted to see the place that could have become home if both Fred and I had made it.
I shook my head and continued on.
Joel’s voice stopped me again. I hated that it stopped me. Why didn’t I just keep walking?
“If you were sure, you would’ve done it already. You wouldn’t have walked with your head streamin’ blood for as long as you did before sitting down by that tree.”
I looked back at him over my shoulder. “I’m not dragging it out because I want to live, Joel. I just haven’t decided what the actual punishment is: life or death.”
 “Punishment for what?”
“He died.” I didn’t offer Joel more than that and left him standing in his doorway.
:✮:·
In the two weeks that I had been in Jackson, I’d spent more time on the floor of my living room than anywhere else. My body protested in its stiffness, almost threatening to atrophy, but I could conjure no will to stop it.
I had no will to do anything at all.
So, it was night and I was yet again, flat against the floorboards, staring up at the stain on the ceiling.
I hadn’t shut the door properly on my way in, something which was signalled to me by the noise coming from the hallway. The wind blustered through the gap, taking every opportunity to rush inside and whisper to me.
The door would hit against the jamb and then creak open. Shut. Then open again.
I had realised almost as soon as I’d laid down, but found myself unable to get up again to close it. So the cold invaded, a pervasive chill that had settled over everything, pricking the skin on my arms on the way down to my bones, attempting to freeze them too.
It didn’t help that I’d just dropped down on top of the blanket instead of crawling under it, leaving myself protected by only sweatpants and a ratty old t-shirt.
The noise of the door didn’t bother me. It had a sort of soothing rhythm. Open, shut. Open, shut. The wind whispered through a wooden mouthpiece.
Just out of curiosity, I'd put my fingers against my wrist: the noise was almost in time with my heartbeat.
Outside, the dark clouds which had spent all day swelling to an ominous, bruised bloat had finally burst. Rain lashed against the windows as though it endeavoured to break the glass.
With my fingers still on my wrist, I felt my pulse jump as my front door slammed shut. I waited, but it didn’t creak open again. The wind’s whisper had been quieted.
I don’t quite know how I didn’t hear the approaching footsteps. I must have been more out of it than I’d thought.
“Catchin’ your death from the cold is slower than a bullet.”
I wasn’t startled by the sound of Joel’s voice. I wasn’t angry or even confused. It was more of a disquiet, that the noise of the wind and the door that I had used to ground me for the last hour or so had stopped so abruptly.
The feel of my pulse became an unwelcome sensation. I pulled my fingers away from my wrist.
I didn’t sit up. Couldn’t yet. It felt like there was a physical weight on my chest: grief sitting there, spiteful and malignant but unseen. Maybe I’d spent so long on the floor I’d fused to it.
Joel moved closer and that time, I heard his footsteps.
“You left your door open.” He said.
He’d stopped right by my feet. I could feel the scuffed soles of his boots brush against my socks. There was something about his presence that prompted a slight buzzing behind my eyes.
“I noticed.” I answered.
“Where’s the gun?”
I didn’t baulk at the question, or feel a familiar flare of irritation, I simply reached back, my hand questing beneath the pillow where it wrapped around the grip. I pulled the weapon free and held it up.
“Why is it under your pillow?”
If I had known Joel better- or just known him at all, I might have been able to tell what exactly the tone of his voice signified.
“I want it close, in case of intruders.” I said glibly.
I lifted my head just enough to make out the shape of Joel, a dark, unmoving mass and shifted my hold so the barrel was directed at him.
“Don’t point that fucking thing at me!” He snarled, his boots knocking against my feet as he lurched forward. “Put it down. Now.”
I was thrown into the memory of the day we’d met in that clearing, when he’d barked the same order with a rifle pointed at my head.
I let my arm drop and the gun clattered onto the floorboards.
He might have mumbled something under his breath then, but I couldn’t make it out. The buzzing was intensifying.
Joel moved forward and soon his large form filled the gap between my body and the couch. He crouched down, his knee brushing against my thigh. He picked up the gun and tossed it onto the couch.
“Still sleeping on the floor.”
My head rolled to the side and I found his eyes in the dark. Outside, the wind howled, the rain like stones thrown against the windows.
 “I don’t really sleep.” I told him. “Doesn’t matter where I am.”
“You don’t sleep.” He repeated my words in a tone that I was far too untethered to pin an emotion to. If there was any emotion in it all.
“Why are you here?” I asked, if only to fill the silence.
I missed the sound of the wind through the gap in the door, considered asking him to go back and open it again but then thought better of it.
“I was passin’ by.” He said.
I chose that moment to force myself to sit up. Being around another person coerced me into some kind of self-awareness and I realised I was in a vulnerable position: him looming over me.
Once I was upright, the details of Joel came into focus. He was soaked from the rain. His tan coat darkened by patches of moisture. A grey-flecked curl fell over his forehead. I was much closer to him when upright. Close enough that I felt the warmth coming off him, flooding the freezing room.
My skin began to prickle.
“Why were you passing?”
“Hmm?” Joel hummed, Then, still kneeling he shifted closer to me. The knuckles of the hand thar he used to hold himself up, ran along the outside of my leg.
“It’s late.” I said thickly. “Why were you wandering about in the rain?”
Joel huffed as his eyes dropped to the ground. Perhaps he’d only just realised he was touching me and decided to take a look. He didn’t move his hand away. “You about to give me a lecture?” He asked.
I shook my head. “No. Tell me.”
“Couldn’t sleep.” Is all he offered.
“You’re dripping onto my floors.” I said, drawing attention to the tell-tale noise that had been poking holes in the silence between our speech.
Joel’s thick brows rose, as if he was affronted. “Oh, they’re your floors? Thought you weren’t sticking around.”
The double meaning swelled in the air between us, taking up space. It stole our breath.
Was that what I’d been doing in Jackson the past two weeks? Just sticking around ?
Yes, I realised. It was exactly what I’d been doing.
I loitered in the land of the living when I knew full well that I didn’t belong anymore.
“My floors, for now.”
The hand against my leg lifted and then passed across my torso coming to settle on my side. With me now partially caged in, Joel leaned closer, which left our faces only a hands breadth apart.
The cold from his damp coat felt like it was seeping into me.
“For now.” Joel repeatedly tersely. His jaw tensed.
“Yes.”
Then his eyes flicked to the coffee table- to Fred’s blood-stained teddy bear.
“Your kid?” He asked upon a strained whisper.
Yes. No. My child and yet not.
My nephew. My reason for living. Mine.
Almost of its own will, my hand shot out and grabbed the collar of Joel’s coat. I held him so tightly I thought my knuckle bones might split my skin. The action inadvertently tugged him closer. His breath fanned out across my face.
“Don’t.” I warned him.
“Don’t what?” His voice had turned brittle, as if something within him was breaking. Perhaps it was his resolve.
“I can’t—” I spluttered out. “I'm not talking about that.”
About him.
Fred was still a part of me. Talking about him after his loss felt like surrendering further pieces of him; tearing of strips of my own skin, a slow flaying of flesh.
“Okay.”
“Don’t try to know me.”
Wanting to escape Joel’s unrelenting gaze, I stared at a bead of water that had fallen from his hair and rolled down his temple. I still had hold of his coat, the damp fabric bunched up between my freezing fingers.
“Who said that’s what I was doing?” Joel challenged, sounding almost insolent.
I made myself meet his eyes again. “Why are you here?”
“Couldn’t sleep.” He repeated, a stubborn set to his jaw. “Was walking.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“Your door was open.”
“You could have shut it and kept on going.”
“Should’ve.” He admitted gruffly.
My shoulders sagged and I shook my head, trying to dislodge his unwavering gaze. It didn’t work
“I don’t want to talk, Joel.” I told him tiredly.
“Don’t have to talk.”
We watched each other closely. Carefully.
“Okay.” I uttered.
My breathing faltered as Joel’s calloused hand curled around my wrist and tugged, encouraging me to release my hold on him. I did immediately. Then, his other hand landed on my back and he began to guide me down. It wasn’t gentle, but the force didn't feel like an imposition.
When the back of my head hit the pillow, he clambered over me. One knee rested on the ground beside my hip, while the other nudged my legs open.
Joel sat back on his knees, his dark pupils trained on me as he unzipped his coat. I watched as he shucked it off and then tossed it onto the couch, right on top of my gun. Then he began to unbutton the cuffs of his plaid shirt.
A sensation that I thought had been lost to me long ago returned; something deep within me coiling tight at the sight of him rolling his sleeves up his toned forearms.
Then he crowded over me. His hands planted themselves on either side of my head. Joel held himself there, our chests brushed against each other, no longer enough space between us for them to swell with full breaths.
There was something suffocating about having him so near. Perhaps that’s why I welcomed it when he pressed even closer.
It felt almost as if Joel tried to cover my body completely with his and absorb me into him. He ran his hand down the side of my face, thumb grazing my cheek before he tucked my hair behind my ear. Then he pressed his lips there to whisper:
“If you want me gone, say it.”
“If I don’t?” I asked breathlessly.
Joel’s breath was hot against the side of my face and it faltered ever so slightly before he spoke again.
“Got something that might help you sleep.”
We stayed like that as his statement dissipated in the air like smoke. Even when it went, the scent lingered: heady and overwhelming.
I lifted my hand tentatively and let it fall on the back of Joel’s neck when he didn’t flinch from it. I don’t know I’d expected him to. I ran my hand up and my fingers collected drops of water until they curled into the hair at the nape of his neck.
In answer, Joel ran his lips down the shell of my ear and then nipped the lobe with his teeth. My eyes fluttered shut at the slight sting.
Joel was solid, tangible enough that he grounded me. He was something that wasn’t going to slip through my fingers. And yet he was utterly detached from me, after this, he would drift away untethered.
I knew whatever happened between us would be fleeting; melt away with the sunrise like frost. I wanted it that way.
My hands fell away from the back of Joel’s neck as he pulled back. Not far, just enough so that he could grab the band of my sweatpants and tug them down, my underwear going with them. He reached the curve of my ass and lifted my hips so that he could pull the clothing free.
I shivered at the rush of the freezing air of my exposed flesh, but Joel was already crawling back on top of me, his warmth returning. I stared up at him as he took two of his own fingers into his mouth. He pulled them free and they glistened with his own spit. Moistness gathered between my thighs accompanied by an agonising throb.
Joel pressed his chest to mine, my hardened nipples pressing through my t-shirt and into his.
When his fingers ran through my folds, my head fell back. He wasted no time, pressing firmly on the way down before he pushed them inside of me. He held them there, no doubt feeling me pulsing around him.
His mouth fell against my neck, not kissing, but holding me flesh between his teeth as he began to pump his fingers. The movement was almost languid, his digits rippling inside of me.
My breath stuttered and my hands lifted, falling on either side of his neck just for something to hold onto.
Joel’s mouth closed into an almost kiss against my pulse point and the little hum he let out vibrated through me.
The tightness deep within me intensified, but just as I began to grow close, he pulled his fingers out of me, leaving an ache in his wake.
But then there was the clink of his belt buckle and his hands fumbled to pull it free. I moved to help him, my fingers brushing against his own that were slick with me.
He submitted to my help and his hands returned to either side of my head as I pulled the belt free of the loops and let it drop to the ground. I went to work on the fly of his jeans, now desperate and panting, but he would not abide my help in that endeavour.
He murmured disapproval and took hand into his and held it above my head. He did the same with the other one and cuffed both of my wrists together with just one of his hands. With the other he popped the button of his jeans and the undoing of the fly soon followed.
His fingers ran through the sensitive flesh between my legs and gathered up some of the slickness there. He kept his eyes on my face as he took himself in the same hand and spread my arousal over his hardness.
My t-shirt had been shucked up to reveal my belly. His eyes flicked to the ugly scar just above my pelvis only briefly.
When Joel lined himself up at my entrance, I let my eyes flutter closed. It had been so long, but I didn't care. I wanted him inside me, to feel him moving. To feel pleasure. Anything to keep the numbness at bay.
Joel pressed himself inside me with a hard thrust. A low groan came from his throat and the hand holding my wrists tightened.
Our hips aligned. And then he began to move, rolling into me, the force of the movements pushed me along the floor, rumpling the blanket beneath me.
When I lifted my feet and wrapped them around his hips, intent on driving him into me even harder, Joel groaned in pleasure. His head dropped low again and his lips skimmed over my temple, then brushed over the still healing gash on my forehead.
Pressure built within me as he pounded relentlessly. The sound of our fevered joining and ragged breathing blocked out everything else, even the wind and rain beyond the house. In that moment it didn't really feel like there was a beyond. Just him.
When I murmured his name, Joel released my wrists. My hands immediately ran up his neck and over the sides of his face. Right when I brushed past the scar on his temple, he pressed his lips against the wound on my forehead.
He thrust into me with such a bruising force that my pleasure burst, my release rolling through me in a violent shudder. I dug my nails into Joel’s hair and his thrusts became sloppier, slowing until he was just grinding his hips against mine.
His hands mirrored my own and he cradled my head, his forehead pressed to mine as he came inside of me.
We stayed like that, our sticky skin pressed close, until our breathing calmed.
Joel pulled out of me and then sat back on his haunches. I felt him looking at me so I shut my eyes again.
I don’t remember much after that before I drifted off.
:✮:·
When I woke up, I was alone. There was an ache between my legs, but it wasn’t painful. I was fully-clothed and tucked beneath the blanket. Almost warm.
But, while I was glad that Joel was nowhere to be found–it had felt like an unspoken agreement between us–something else was missing.
My gun was gone. Again.
Bastard.

Pick a pile. Choose one or more pictures. Trust your intuition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pile 1: At the beginning of the month, you may have an unforeseen situation, force majeure, which will change your plans, which were supposed to be implemented in may but because of this situation the implementation will either be postponed or you will change your decision and do it differently. As I see it, for the most part you planned these plans together with other people, your family or friends but someone could change their mind at the last moment and refuse to participate or a strong quarrel may arise with someone. Naturally, you will be nervous because of unforeseen circumstances, thoughts may arise "why not give it all up, give up this idea" but as the cards show, it is better not to abandon the implementation here but to look for an alternative, since in the end everything will turn out much better than you imagined!
Also, this month the chance to change jobs or occupation / try a new hobby will be quite high as you will receive a good offer from a company or employer with good working conditions and a good salary/ rate per hour. However, your current employers may stop you, because they are afraid of losing you, you are a valuable employee for them and this can create small problems when you are fired. Also, if you are in business, your sales will increase significantly this month, you can make profitable deals with someone, invest profitably in some business.  If you are studying, then you will also succeed this month but it is important to make an effort here since you may have strict teachers who are very picky about the answers or you can write tests where one mistake can lead to the loss of many points, so be careful!
Also this month, there is a high chance to meet a new person who will later become a good friend for you or, if you are looking for a relationship, will become a good partner. As I see it, you will spend a lot of time with each other, you will get to know each other, create joint memories, in general, you will be very comfortable and good next to this person. If you are already in a relationship, then this month is a good opportunity to strengthen your bond or resolve problems between you, establish a relationship and get closer, spend time together. You can also spend a lot of time with your family this month, in particular with your siblings.
Tumblr media
Pile 2: At the beginning of the month, your problem which lasted for a long time will be able to be solved, you will finally be able to find a way out of the situation and thanks to this you will feel so relieved, weight has finally fallen off your shoulders, you will have a slight feeling of freedom, you can feel so confident as if you won the most difficult competition and took the prize! It can be anything, getting rid of debts, solving psychological problems, solving financial problems, overcoming a crisis, resolving a conflict with people — in general, something that has been burdening you for a long time. You may also have felt depressed and tired lately, felt like your mood was sad most of the time, it might be difficult for you to enjoy some little things and your condition will improve significantly this month. Here, in general, the rough patch will end, luck and happiness will accompany you in your life!
I also see that this month you will have the opportunity to change something in your life that will help you feel better, here the emphasis is that you would like to get rid of the past, of the memories that burden you: you can change your appearance, your style, change of scenery and go somewhere for a while or move altogether, change your social circle, hobbies, change your job / occupation, change the interior of the apartment, you can add decor, you can discover new places in the city, find new people, you can also change inside yourself, change your views — anything can happen here that can improve your mood and well-being.
This month you will also make new plans, goals and work on their implementation, here I see that you will definitely succeed since this will be something very important to you, you will be burning with the idea and strive to achieve what you would like, probably this motivation came to you after improving your well-being and it's very cool! Here you can study something a lot, try to figure out a topic, consult with others, improve your skills, even if you start something new, you will be accompanied by success and luck!
Tumblr media
Pile 3: This month you may feel tired from the oversaturation of events in your life, from an overabundance of emotions, from being with people often, and here I see you can feel how your social battery has "run out". You will distance yourself from people for a while, spend time alone or with only a small number of people but in any case you focus on yourself and taking care of yourself. You can take a vacation at work or take a break, spend time doing things that bring you pleasure that calm you down and do not strain you, you will pamper yourself here and do what you want. You can also get tired of the hustle and hustle and go to some quiet place for you, often visit your favorite places and “places of power" that fill you internally.
And although I said that you will spend most of your time alone with yourself, I also do not exclude that you will want to meet with your inner circle, your loved ones may also meet  and offer to go on a trip to small towns, you can spend time outside the city but away from the hustle and bustle. And if you agree then this trip will also be able to fill you with internal resources, improve your well-being, you will feel how your fatigue gradually passes and your head is free of obsessive thoughts.
At the end of the month, a situation will occur that will take you out of your inner balance: it will be unexpected, you will be required to quickly resolve the situation or do something in the shortest possible time, make a choice and naturally this can infuriate you. This may be related to work, for example, your boss will require you to do something urgently, make changes to the work, it may also be related to the family, there will be a heated dispute between family members and you will have to take someone's side, since it is difficult to remain indifferent in this case. In any case, it won't last long, you will get a grip and quickly resolve the problems that have overtaken you so you shouldn't worry too much about it.
Thank you for reading! I will be glad of any feedback 🖤

Epilogue.
Tumblr media
Yandere Blade x F Reader.
Warnings: Yandere themes, unhealthy relationships, codependency, Blade's love language is committing murder for you. Word count: 1.5k.
Nexus index.
Tumblr media
“You went overboard.”
Blade doesn’t respond.
You know he heard you. He’s lucid enough to comprehend your words, but that doesn’t mean he’ll acknowledge them. Not when he’s standing there, parsing through his frenetic thoughts, which must feel more like a distant dream than reality. This is how you’ve come to understand his mara. It’s a capricious affliction, despite how adept you’ve become at soothing it.
This burden isn’t yours alone to bear. Blade has his part to play. He has to at least, on some level, want to ward off the beckoning madness. Your psionic abilities lay in amplifying base desires, not writing over them. Usually, this isn’t a problem. Usually, you both prefer he retains control instead of leaving a trail of contorted corpses in his wake.
Today, however, was decidedly unusual.
The nature of your new ‘work’ invites risk. Danger has never been a stranger to you — there was a reason why leaving the LOTUS-EATER’s premises was discouraged. This daunting acquaintance loves seeking you out. The feeling isn’t mutual, regardless of how successful the attempts are. It’s the aftershocks that you dread most. In the moment, everything happens so fast, there’s no time to be afraid until you reflect on it later.
Nona would tell you that what’s done is done, no point in dwelling on it further.
Lear would suggest you exercise more caution in the future, whilst barely being able to hold back tears of relief that it wasn't worse.
They aren’t here, though, you think. I only have him.
You swivel around on the kitchen island’s barstool to examine Blade like he’s examining you. He’s wearing nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist as his clothes were dirtied beyond saving. Water trickles down the contours of his scarred, lithe body. The scent of orange and vanilla wafts in the air beside him, courtesy of the safehouse’s shower, no doubt. You prefer that over the metallic miasma which clung to him previously.
His crimson eyes pierce through the dimly lit room. You can’t decipher his expression, nor do you care to. What matters is that he gives some reassurance there won’t be a repeat of today’s incident. Knowing him, however, that’s too much to ask, but you’re starting to wonder if sweet lies are kinder than the truth.
Blade’s predatory gaze pauses at the fresh bruise on your forearm. What he doesn’t reveal outwardly is more than made up for by the sickening wrath his mind emanates. You wince beneath its intensity, a reaction he ignores, surprisingly, as he’s too focused on the hand-shaped indent. It isn’t until you inhale sharply that he snaps out of his reverie and the pressure in the room lessens.
While you rub your aching temples, he approaches, slinking forward like a stray cat. Though he viciously defends you as a guard dog would, you think he shares more similarities with the feline species. He bristles at anyone’s touch but yours, silently stares until you give him attention, and would gladly lay a pile of his kills at your feet, seeking approval for the macabre offering.
There was a time you’d voice this musing to observe his displeasure.
That time has long since passed.
Blade’s calloused fingertips run over the bruise, light enough to spare you any pain.
“Are there more?” he asks.
“I haven’t checked,” you shift back to rid yourself of his touch. His eyebrows pinch together, forming creases. “Is that really all you have to say?”
He’s glowering now. You don’t know what displeases him more — your avoidance of his touch, irate tone, or the condemnation hitherto left unsaid.
“You would’ve had me show mercy to your attackers?”
Blade enunciates the word mercy with every ounce of contempt one would regard their mortal enemy with. Now you’re beginning to better understand why getting him under control was such an ordeal. You encountered every possible resistance when attempting a link with him, a phenomenon you hadn’t experienced since that fateful day in The Lounge’s private room. He was always so receptive to, well, you, oddly pliant to your whims so long as you framed them right.
“You didn’t need to—” your throat goes dry, as the sights, sounds, and smells from earlier resurface, “—Need to…”
Fucking terrify me.
Sometimes, you forget on purpose.
You forget so you can drunkenly ramble anecdotes about your strangest clients over drinks, let him teach you the steps of weapon forging, and not struggle when he pulls you into his chest at night.
You forget so that your resentment can stay suspended in time, never growing past a point that’d suffocate you.
You forget so you can remember how to live.
Streams of sunlight sneak past the room’s blinds. You reach out, as if to catch it, allowing the beam to settle on your hand. The closest star to this planet — Varsig — is named the Spectator. The planet’s earliest inhabitants once thought the giant orb to be a god’s eye. Following their every movement, scrutinizing their every decision.
In the current year of 2157 AE, few still believe this superstition.
You understand where those ancient civilizations were coming from.
Eris’ eternal night hid wrongdoings behind a silvery veil. Stars, however, ensure you witness everything. Every misstep, shame, and regret is crystal clear. There’s no questioning the integrity of what you see. It burrows into your memory where it intends to remain forevermore. You’re reminded again and again that you’re no longer an Exalted Arbiter, but a means to an end for the universe’s most notorious criminal faction.
Either way, it’s a glorified transfer of ownership.
Still. At least then you had Loopy, Nona, Lear—
“You’re thinking about him.”
You freeze upon hearing his gruff accusation. Swiftly, perhaps suspiciously so, you turn the faucet of your thoughts off. Too much slipped through in your carelessness. Blade might not have your level of experience when it comes to decrypting the minds of others, but he’s spent enough time around you to pick up on a few things. The low-level link you share with him goes both ways, as per that miscreant Kafka’s suggestion.
For the most part, it’s an unobtrusive function that’s no more noticeable than one’s breathing. This prevents the continuous uptime from placing heavy strain on you. Identifying fluctuations in Blade’s mara is its main function. However, if you’re not being vigilant, a few segments from your psyche can pass through to him.
“Sorry,” you murmur.
It’s an unconvincing apology.
His mara, previously satiated from its earlier gorging, rouses. It seeks to form a tribunal with you as the defendant. This disease hates you, worships you, and longs to break you so that it might stitch you up and do it all over again.
Blade shakes his head and sighs.
The mara’s deliberation over your sentencing fades, leaving nothing but uncomfortable silence.
He turns around and starts walking away. Your eyes, ever keen in the dark, trace over the scars that cover his back. The off-color testimonies to his many battles have welcomed a newcomer, inducted into the ranks hours prior. The skin is red and angry. His long hair partially covers it — a slash made from the right side of his back to the lower left.
There’s little you know about combat, but from what you can tell, his opponents were skilled. They moved too fast for you to get an accurate count. In the aftermath, the remains were either butchered beyond recognition, or the few intact limbs so spread out, you couldn’t arrive at a number then either. Blade intercepted every shot and stab intended for you. He parried most, yet some slipped through the cracks. Without a second’s hesitation, he’d shield you from the onslaught, unfazed by what must’ve been excruciating pain.
That undying devotion is yours.
He belongs to you, really. Possibly more than you belong to him. This husk of a man who flayed the flesh of your foes and hung them by their entrails. Only the Aeons above know what other desecrations he committed when your consciousness gave out.
Sometimes, you calm the chaos simmering in his veins.
Other times, you raise it to a rapid boil.
“Yingxing.”
His retreating figure stills. Before, holding the memories of who he once was guaranteed he’d succumb to the mara’s influence. It’s less definitive now. There’s an undeniable intimacy to it — speaking a name scratched from history. He isn’t Yingxing anymore, nor can he ever be again. Somewhere, wedged deep into a forgotten crevice of his psyche, a tiny fragment of that splintered identity slumbers.
You rouse it when you think he needs to remember the anguish of losing everything.
“Do you want to be loved by me?”
You’re plenty capable of feeling love.
You love your student, who wrestled with life to reclaim the joy it previously stole. You love your first friend, who didn’t cower away from the unruly girl who decided to change his name on a whim. On some days, you could even love your mother, if your memories deceived you enough.
What about him, whom you might spend centuries beside?
Can loneliness outweigh resentment?
After what feels like multiple lifetimes, he responds.
“Anything’s enough.”
When he leaves, he takes a part of you with him.
You rise from your seat.

fandom goes into deep denial about the attempted infanticide of baby loki because the imperialism reading of it works against the text and requires that the baby be stolen not abandoned, and that this theft be for the most nefarious and imperialist purposes we can think of. whereas actually - and i was going to say this is 'the obvious parallel' but no it's not even a parallel it's what's clearly happening there - the baby's been left out to die for being disabled hasn't he?
the word 'runt' gets used but adult loki compared to other frost giants is not just slightly on the small side, he's probably equivalent to a human with dwarfism, which definitely brings this into Infanticiding The Disabled Child territory. which a) laufey cannot be allowed to do because that's a fucked up and horrible thing to do* b) we also can't allow that odin just kept that baby because by asgardian standards there was no obvious disability there. (the social model of disability, but with giants and less-giants**) "why would you be throwing out this baby, laufey? it looks normal-sized. it doesn't even have an unusual number of limbs. yeah, i am taking this baby as a friend for my similarly-sized bio-son. mine now. finders keepers." i point this out because the disabled baby is not saved by someone thinking disability-based infanticide is wrong - at least not necessarily so - but by being found by someone who doesn't recognise the supposed problem. to whom it simply does not exist.
and of course fandom loves sad little feeble loki being weak and pathetic in fic, but i have somehow never seen this tied to the fact that he is canonically undersized for his species and likely has some connected internal fuckery going on with his organs. we have no idea what made him that small or what it'd do and - here's the fun kicker for you angst fans! - probably nobody on asgard would either. when's the last time any of them had to look after even an entirely able-bodied jotun? how likely is it that they can just write off to jotunheim to say "hey what's up with that kid your king tried to murder? how would we fix him if he lived here? yeah, our king kept him. no, we didn't eat the baby! can we borrow a medical textbook? what do you mean you don't have paper there. well how do you write down how the orientalist belly-dancer outfits are to be worn? well then how... no, come back. did you just hang up on a letter???"
sorry, i digressed. what i was aiming for was that there is a very obvious reason why loki might be unusually weak for a lad who looks healthy to us and who doesn't seem any smaller or less able-bodied than the people around him, but i just don't see it being deployed in fic or in meta or whatever. is this because the 'laufey just left his baby out for some fresh air like norwegians do' reading kind of relies on that baby not being seen as a burden to be got rid of and we all kind of agree that... no. no, i shall not finish that thought. it is too depressing. it probably is that though isn't it?
anyway. this is me wondering what is up with that. other than maybe some kind of 'echo-chamber effect' where even the wildest ideas can become commonly-held fanon and where it'd be easy to just straight-up ignore a very obvious implication of baby-murdering because someone leaving you to just fucking die for being disabled is somehow not enough oppression for a blorbo in these enlightened times. or because it breaks a popular fandom interpretation of events. or something like that?
*in fairness i'd say humans from earth are probably within the group that's allowed to just not care about humans from earth getting invaded and killed.
**i say 'less-giants' because look:
Tumblr media
look at this literal giant among men. tiny scrawny little thing, so smol and so freakishly tall to the humans. i call this 'the social model of smolness.'

Pick a card - Loki's advice on how to improve your life 😬
I'm finally back to this blog. Shit happens in my life, so I took some time to deal with it, and I failed, so I walked away from the situation, which not only allows me to take care of myself but also gives me time to take care of you with some general readings. I feel Loki wants to provide you with some advice to improve your life this time.
As this is a general reading, please remember to take what resonates and leave the rest behind. If one pile doesn't sound right to you, you can pick another one, or more than one pile if you feel called to.
Also, this is just a tarot reading giving you some advice that can help with your situation. You're the one that has the control over your life.
👇🏻 Pick a color that you feel drawn to 👇🏻
(It may be a coincidence, but the randomly generated colors this time match the box of the tarot deck I am using for this reading, which is The Somnia Tarot by Nicolas Bruno 🥴)
Tumblr media
And find the corresponding reading for you below!
Pile 1
I see that you may be dealing with tough situations that make you feel extremely isolated right now, or just left one recently. It can be tough family situations that leave you no choice but to be independent from them, or an extremely toxic workplace where you are being bullied. I don’t want to go into details of the situations because it's a general reading, and I also don't want to trigger people. You know what is going on if this pile is resonating with you.
Now, you see nothing good in the past situation, or the one you're dealing with right now that makes you feel you're stuck. All you want to do is fast forward to the future to see what the future can offer you. Loki admires that you have the clarity to see that the situation is indeed shitty, and have the honesty to admit it. Loki will be with you, offering you support in getting rid of the situation. However, Loki also wants you to be more grounded.
For some of you, I see that you're betting a lot on your partner, or a very trusted individual, to take care of you, and to create moments of joy in the future. Loki thinks that it's great for you to enjoy your life with someone you love, but at the same time, he wants you to be cautious and make sure that you're not building your whole life around them. Loneliness is caused by not having someone that knows you, and you have to take time to understand yourself, instead of spending all the time and energy orbiting that person. Their company can give you comfort, but it is never enough to fill the void inside you, if you're not putting effort into fixing the hole in you.
For another part of you, Loki wants to remind you to take time to discover yourself, instead of merely reacting to situations. For example, it's great that you have the idea to leave your toxic family. However, it shouldn't be your sole purpose of existence. You have so much potential, so much more than just the victim of the circumstances. You can develop hobbies, find your philosophy of life, create a network of people that can support your future, and more... You may not be able to see what you can do with yourself right now, but just believing in the potential itself is good enough to open yourself to receive more blessings from life. Otherwise, being too focused on the negative stuff will cause you to attract more negativity into your life, as the universe feels that all you want is more problems to solve.
Overall, Loki's message to this pile is to ground yourself and regain control over your life so you can be the main character in your own life. You are the only one that is able to build strength within yourself. Everyone else in your life is just capable of providing you with the assistance you need. Stop indulging in what others have the potential to do with you, what others are doing to you, or what you can do for others. It will burden you to a point that it can break you down. You can never fully control what others do. All you can do is focus on yourself.
Start acknowledging that you are strong, and it is just as important as any other person in your life. The past was screwed, and the future is never guaranteed, unless you have a clear enough idea yourself. Take time to think about what you truly want to happen in your life. Loki wants to remind you again that you are more than things that happened to you, so it is time to let things happen in your life for your own enjoyment.
Pile 2
First, I feel that someone who's reading this pile is actually considering if you should start working with Loki or not, and you may be looking at this reading to see if Loki is vibing with you. Loki wants you to take this reading as a sign that he wants to work with you.
I see that you are losing hope for life, because it seems that everything that has happened to you is terrible, and it feels like it will continue spiraling. For this pile, I see betrayal, and a fight with someone you care about. It may be a group with a really immature, aggressive leader, with mindless people that can do nothing better than following the leader like an NPC. The vibe I've got from it is a very stereotypical high school mean girl/boy bully type, like you have to please the "boss" or you get no friends at school, but it can also just be an indicator showing me how immature those people are. I also get a vibe of being stuck in a religious group, that has ideas you just cannot agree with, or even harmful for your mental health or sense of identity. Although you feel that what they've done to you is wrong, you don't want to leave them as they mean a lot to you. For example, your whole family, and even the whole community, is following that religion. Letting them know what you actually think, feels like a social suicide.
Loki acknowledges the suffering you are going through right now, and he agrees that those people have done you wrong. He wants to remind you to stop making excuses for those people, because it's a fact that they've done you wrong, and you're hurt by them. Also, Loki sees no reason why you have to limit yourself, or mold your thoughts for the sake of others, because theirs are not better than yours. To be honest, theirs are probably worse than you.
You're being put to a community that does not match your frequency, and it sucks. Still, it's a test to see if you're brave enough to be honest to yourself and support your own decisions, or waste time to become one of the NPCs following random rules. Loki suggests you leave that group, but in a peaceful way. It can be slowly disengaging from the group, fading away from their life, or just straight up stop showing up, because sometimes, people care less about you than you think, as they don't really care about you at all.
Loki ensures that you will find a better friend group that will be supportive of you and does not intend to hurt you if you start being honest to yourself and your own feelings, because there's a saying that your energy will match the energy of people who surround you, and vice versa. I can see that they may even have the potential to be your lifelong friends or even partners. For those who want to get rid of your existing religious group, Loki invites you to work with him. Loki ensures that he will help you bring better people to your life, as well as helping you to restore honesty to your life. He will make things better in your life.
There may be lonely times that you have to face if you start distancing yourself from the group. However, Loki wants to remind you that he is always here for you to go through the tough times. All you have to do is ask for him to be with you. He also wants to remind you that you are always surrounded by your spirit team, that are constantly protecting you and guiding you to a better path. Use the period of silence to stay tuned to them, review what you want in your life, and ask for their blessings.
Pile 3
For this pile, I feel that you are always the one who takes responsibility and leads others. You can see value in doing so, and you really want to continue guiding others to the better path. However, recently, I feel that you have a feeling that you cannot keep doing this anymore. It can be that the value of the team or company you work for doesn't match your vision anymore, or finding out that people are actually not appreciative of your efforts, or it can just be the stress and effort you have to bear is too much for you to keep doing this.
You question if quitting this position is the best option. It can be you worrying if you can get better pay from elsewhere if it's a job you're thinking of quitting. It can also be you worrying if it's too selfish for you to take care of your own feelings, sacrificing the potential of others staying on a better path. If this is the case, Loki wants to tell you that what you think is the best thing for others, may not be the most suitable thing for them. Some people just lack the energy to stay in a better place, and it's not your responsibility that they're not good enough. Attempting to go through others’ lessons for them, is the worst thing you can do, because not only will they not learn anything from it, now you have to bear the "karma" of screwing up their own lesson. If you don't believe in karma, then I still want to remind you that it's a waste of time and energy to try to make someone become a better person, when they don't have the intention to do so. If you're not the "fated one" to serve them the lesson, then you just cannot do it, no matter how much you care for them, and how much time you spend on them. Also, spoiling them will lead them to keep asking more from you, which probably explains why they're not appreciative of your efforts.
Loki wants to remind you that you're not born to just nurture others. You have to nurture yourself as well. Ironically, if you start taking care of yourself and caring less about how or what others are doing, it helps you to achieve your goal of being a better leader and taking care of others faster. It's because you've been blessed with a great vision that provides you with the charisma and leadership skills to be a leader. What you're worrying about right now is limiting your vision, and it's time to release yourself from it. As soon as the fog is cleared, you will see a new path that leads you to your destination.

This is an excerpt from the Giggle novelization. Proving to me that the Doctor truly never got over or Rose or moved on. I think regeneration combined with Rose having tentoo provided them with a better way to cope. I think they learned how to gain less pain and more power from her memory. I think some days they miss her and feel a little bit of sadness, but most days they miss her but use her name to keep fighting. But a love like what The Doctor felt for Rose never diminishes and never goes away. I believe it was one of the constants of his life that wouldn’t change with regeneration. Neither on screen or in the novelizations did the Doctor mention loving anyone else who they had any kind of romantic interaction with. They expressed love for their platonic best friends Sarah Jane and Donna. And the man they saw as a father figure, Wilf. Rose was the only person he had a romantic dynamic with that he loved at this point. She will always be the love of his life. Maybe Rogue will come to be a close second but Rose is the Doctor’s true love. Yes she has a version of him in tentoo. Yes tentoo is as much the Doctor as any other version of him and is exactly the same as ten (besides lifespan), but knowing she’s happy doesn’t mean the prime universe Doctor would move on or stop feeling the deep romantic love for her he always has.
Another part of why I believe this so strongly is that if the Doctor could just get rid of or diminish their romantic love for her with regeneration, the knowledge they would outlive Rose wouldn’t be such a burden. The curse of the time lords wouldn’t be such a curse. The “I have to live on alone” thing wouldn’t be so painful if the Doctor would only miss her until they regenerated. If the Doctor could just move on upon regeneration, then they would’ve embraced their love for Rose in the first place and there wouldn’t be so much angst over not being able to tell Rose how they feel.
Not everyone will agree and that’s okay, this is a show so big and so fast that no two people will see it exactly the same way. I just wanted to explain why I believe the Doctor’s true love is 100% Rose. If someone else has the same perspective as me, I hope you find this post empowering.

Headcanon time! Banuk edition
So we already know that there are many many different Weraks within the Banuk tribe. We also know that they all have their own way of going about things, with different levels of intensity. The White Teeth (the werak associated with Ikrie's questline), for example, is very strict about the survival capabilities of its members, as new recruits must be able to survive four days and nights alone on a glacier. It's doubtful the White Teeth are the only werak with these ideals.
So with that in mind, that leads me to this question: what happens to the babies? Now it's fairly simple to imagine that a member of these weraks who could not keep up with the extreme lifestyle would either be ostracized or die trying to keep up (and in some cases left to die). But I feel that a baby would be treated (slightly) differently. Yes, a child is incapable of many of the actions required by the werak they were born into, but they have the potential to grow. Their weakness isn't a failing at this point, it is an inherent aspect of children which (in the eyes of the werak) can be overcome. I doubt many weraks would leave infants to die (though it's not unheard of) and that's where this headcanon comes in.
It is a common occurrence (at least to the degree that it isn't considered strange in Banuk culture) that the children of these extreme weraks are left in the care of other weraks. Some may know their heritage, others may not, depending on their birth parents and the werak that raised them. Should they wish to become a member of their parent's werak they are usually just as welcomed as any other Banuk.
Some weraks have many of these orphaned children because their land borders that of several extreme weraks. This may even become a part of their identity. Other times there may be only one due to one or both of the groups being nomadic. I believe the extremist weraks would want to be rid of a child as soon as possible, if a nearby werak recently had a birth then they're in luck, they won't have to wait for the infant to be weaned off of milk if they are able to pay the mother to raise the child. Otherwise they will have to wait.
Additionally, the parents of the child could be shunned by their werak as well. Obviously such a werak is no place for children, but people are people and sometimes babies happen. If the child becomes a large burden on the werak, I could see both parents being shunned until the problem is solved. (There's also something to be said here about how childbirth isn't something you just bounce back from and go back to roughing it on a glacier, but this headcanon is about orphans.)
Long story short, it isn't uncommon for weraks to raise the children of these extreme weraks. Many of these kids will remain in the werak they were raised by, some not even knowing they weren't born a part of it to begin with. Others will strive to join the werak of their parents, even if they don't know who they are. And yet others will feel abandoned, not feeling as though they belong to either werak. They might choose to strike out on their own or join a completely different werak.
A/N
WHYYYYY don't we know ANYTHING about Banuk family units??? do they even stay with their parents or is it a group thing??? literally the only people who mention having alive family is Ourea and Aratak and they're siblings. Do parents actually raise specifically their kids or is it like a whole gaggle of moms and dads working together on shifts? Are there weraks that function as giant daycares/boarding schools? I'm just trying to make some sense out of all this. One thing is for sure though: the White Teeth are not gonna keep kids around but kids are still gonna happen. That's life (literally).
