Crys almost, almost thinks they’ll make it without anything going wrong when the next explosion hits. They’d left what Lize deemed to be the critical zone – the base and it’s warm, homely corridors – several turns ago, plunged into the abandoned mines with nothing but a handful of lirstones to light their way, but all hell breaks loose anyway, when the charge goes off. There’s a burst of sound, directly overhead, loud enough to make his ears ring, to send all five of them stumbling to a stop – he sucks in a sharp, stuttering breath, clapping his hands over his ears, and someone gives a shout, and then the ceiling caves in.

“I heard you’ve been getting along well with the others.” Crys looks up from his food to find Lize, silver-white hair tied back into a high ponytail, a bowl of stew in her hands and a faint smile tugging at her face. “Can I sit?”

He spends most of his time sleeping, slipping in and out of half-fevered dreams, whiplashing between unbearably warm and not being able to even feel his fingers – and somehow, time skips and hops and jumps and the bolt creaks, the door opens to fling a square of light onto the ground, and they let him out.

The three of them whirl just in time to see the man being flung across the clearing, straight at them. Iri launches himself several paces backwards with the aid of his wings, Yuan mirroring his movements, and Beatriz Shifts in quick succession to get out of the way. Both of the man’s hands have morphed into giant, dark claws now – he digs his fingers into the ground, ripping deep furrows into the dirt, and slows to a stop right beside them with an accompanying cloud of dust.

"But now that you're here, now that you've found me, it's time for the real party to begin." As if on cue, the track came to its end without another queued up. "What can I say, my timing is just that good." Halliel grinned.

☆ STATISTICS.

words written: 13 022

projects worked on: Andromeda Rogue mostly but i've been swatting at Shiny New Ideas left and right with a tennis racket. also i thought about Gemini Heist really really hard and i think that counts for something

proudest accomplishment: AR1 draft 2 is done!!!!!!

books read: After Atlas by Emma Newman; Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson; Exit Strategy (Murderbot Diaries #4) by Martha Wells. all excellent reads. (sidenote two out of three of these books involve murder investigations and the third has murder in the title. i'm sensing a theme in my reading.)

☆ GENERAL COMMENTS.

i am still terrible at being consistent at writeblr-ing. i guess this is just my life now.

i'm debating using camp nano to actually hunker my ass down and get some writing done on gemini heist, but between work and apartment hunting and a possible move by the end of the month i don't know how feasible that's gonna be :') we'll see.

and no i'm not glossing over the fact that i have a finished second draft. i'm just saving my screaming for below the cut.

so this draft now sits at 85.7K, which is about 11.8K added from the first, and although it is still faaar from perfect it is definitely... better than the draft i finished 2 years ago. it's insane how much my writing has improved, between all the reading i've been doing and first drafting the two sequels of the trilogy.

that being said there still are a lot of things i know need to be fixed, but i'm at the point where if i try to fix them on my own i'll be stuck on them forever.

enter the betas!!! i'm planning on doing an ~official~ beta call next week but honestly if you're interested in beta-ing this book feel free to hmu right away!! ultimately i want to self-pub this thing (which is quite overwhelming to think about hhhhh) but one thing at a time :')

☆ FEATURED EXCERPT.

i really couldn't decide what snippet to post so this was admittedly chosen a bit at random lmao. this is from when the gang is approaching their destination for their expedition.

On the external display, Mohani loomed ahead, growing larger every second. The planet was almost entirely a deep blue, except for some white spots at its poles. It reminded Finneas of his final glimpse of Ghillairde when he was leaving it behind for the last time. For a disorienting second, it almost felt like he was returning to his birth planet. But soon, the ship was close enough to see the sandy outline of the continents. The blue wasn’t all ocean. Some of it was trees. He directed the ship towards the landing coordinates just as Petra arrived in the bridge, clutching several barf bags. “Good to see you’ve come prepared, Lacroye,” he commented. “You’re already looking green, and we haven’t even entered the atmosphere yet.” She grumbled something unintelligible in response as she took her place in the copilot’s chair.

I have been thinking about the kinds of foods eaten by cultures in the Stellar Eclipse series more lately, specifically since some of the cultures in that world have diets that are fully plant-based or don't use fire for cooking, beyond my previously limited ideas around raw meals. Going to try to develop that more here but take it with a grain of salt, pun intended!

What is one comfort food that'll change your whole mood for the day?

Eureka: Authentic sun-dried trout and herbs is something that I haven't had in a long time...I've tried to replicate it at home but it isn't quite the same. It always comes out a little saltier here, probably because we live so close to the ocean. As much as I'd like to taste it again, I'm not sure how I would feel if I was completely successful. As-is, it reminds me of my childhood and happy memories from my village and foster parents.

What is an experience, good or bad, that has turned you off or on to a food completely?

Baltan: I can't stand anything that's gummy or chewy since my last extended stay in a hospital.

If you could eliminate one piece of produce, meat, dairy, or sweets off the earth, what would it be?

Baltan: I understand why gelatin is useful in a hospital, but fuck gelatin.

Lleuwellyn: Soft drinks, just to see what Baltan would do.

Azzie: (after struggling for some time to remember the word not for pickles, but the thing that makes pickles taste Like That) Vinegar.

Eureka: Nothing! There are no bad ingredients, only bad cooks. But if I absolutely had to...probably potatoes.

Dessert is normally saved for last, but if you could, what would you order for your entree at a restaurant?

Lleuwellyn: A fruit tart would be fine, wouldn't it? That's healthy enough.

Baltan: If Eureka bakes it, I'll eat it for any meal. His chocolate cake is my favorite.

Azzie: Iced fruit cream!

Eureka: If you're craving sweets, I'm sure I could make a dinner that is sweet. There are plenty of cuts of meat that pair well with sweeter seasonings. Pork, white fish, mince...served with a fruit salad or chutney... (starts muttering recipe ideas)

What are some food fusions that should never be mixed?

Lleuwellyn: Pickled vegetables and soft drinks. Ask me how I know.

Cooking is a life skill, so why haven't you started learning yet?

Lleuwellyn: I barely remember to eat.

Baltan: Eureka won't let me in the kitchen unless it's for basic things. And he is right for that.

I am (dubiously!) still here, though it's been... several hot seconds since I was a 'part' of writeblr. Possibly a whole hot minute. But I'm slowly regaining a little energy after the latest bout of Medical Crap, so I'm officially back at my writing desk!

butter I found one instance of butterflies, so we'll have to go with that since there's nothing else

He watches, knees tucked up to his chest, curled up on the couch, as his mother bustles about. Her heavy travel cloak brushes against the floor, just barely fluttering from her larger movements, sending shadows like butterflies flitting across the walls. The curtains are drawn, the fireplace cold with not even the embers glowing, and the sole candle lit isn’t anywhere close to beating back the darkness. She shoves things into the rucksacks on the table and mutters and sends furtive glances at the door and barely acknowledges his existence at all.

The windows look out onto the courtyard below, covered in white snow tinted sunset orange. Heavy dark purple curtains with gold tassels drape to the floor, and Carrick feels his feet sink into soft, plush carpet. There are bookshelves lining the walls – not just AMA drivel, but history and science and fiction, atlases and dictionaries and a few old texts. In a corner, next to a crackling fireplace, is a low table and a few stuffed sofas, and the lighting is soft and mellow.

mild(ly)

Meals are three times a day, salted mush and rubbery meat and wilted greens; shower quick and only after everyone has left or it’s blood against the porcelain tile again and staying up to scrub it off, then scrubbing the toilets on all the floors above too. Lessons involve AMA doctrines, AMA laws, AMA history – slap across the cheek if you’re wrong, slap across the cheek if you’re right, slap across the cheek if you answer in a way that’s even mildly sarcastic, if you answer at all (and he is always, always, called on).

smooth

He speaks up, finally, asks though he already knows: “Mom? What’s going on?” The fear leaks into his voice despite how he tries to keep it out. She spins, then, walks over and crouches in front of him and tries to smooth down his hair.

2: do they have a nickname?

Not that she lets anyone call her, but Celeste calls her “Vegs” occasionally. And it’s in debate, a little, on if Celeste will end up calling her “Lyra” at some point (it’s the name of the constellation Vega is a star in. Though I didn’t know Vega was a star until after she was named). It has potential to be a sweet moment, if I can do it right. I like the idea of it, at least, even if it doesn’t happen.

12: do they have any family members?

None that she’s in contact with or keeps up with or checks on.

20: sexual orientation?

She’s a lesbian.

22: do they have any tattoos?

No. She can’t, really, because it’s too identifying. If that wasn’t an issue, though, I can see her having a half sleeve on her upper arm. Not sure why, but it feels right.
