Pathologic Fest Day 17: Notoriety (1)
Part 1 - #crystalclaraity
This belated entry for @fellowtragedian is also crossposted on AO3! and yes, this is set in my 22nd century Thanatica AU, ISMIE (imperare sibi maximum imperium est).
Warning: medical scams, internet drama, ableism, xenophobia, suicide baiting, anti-vaccine behavior
Everything in this story is fictional. Any resemblance to real people, places, or events are purely coincidental.

like. crystalclaraity says shit like âthis plague isnât realâ and like itâs âjust the negative energy pooling in the world that my crystal can neutralizeâ. i bet sheâs fully vaccinated and doesnât even listen to her own videos.

Last Line Tag
Tagged by @pamsdrabbles
This is a bit more than a last line, but Iâm pretty proud of this. Pretty graphic, so be warned!
There was too much blood for him to handle alone.
Sixsmith felt it dripping from his coat, the life-warmth trickling across his fingers, saw it dotting and blotching into the packed earth and he realised, deep somewhere in his gut, that he was scared. But he couldnât show it, not with Godwin under his hands, not with his eyes wide and breath coming quicker and quicker.
He spoke Taiyeku. It was natural, flowing to his tongue like blood. âWeâre alright, weâre alright, weâre alright. Someoneâs coming. Someoneâs coming.â
A litany. A prayer.
Not for the first time in his long life, Sixsmith wished there was someone â or something â up there. That his Gods hadnât abandoned them. That his forebearersâ spirits could really step in and do more than nudge aside a bullet or change the wind direction.
What he really needed (what Godwin really needed) right now was a spirit of a proper surgeon with a surplus of blood and some really good stitches.
He laughed and saw Godwinâs fear briefly flash into confusion before the pain came back.
âStay with me,â he whispered. âDonât die.â
Godwin tried to nod. His eyelids were fluttering.
Sixsmith leant back. He could still smell smoke coming from somewhere, people were still screaming, but it seemed more concentrated, less chaotic. What was happening?
He worked spit back into his mouth and tried to yell. âHelp!â
The tent flap clattered in the rising wind. Thunder rolled in the distance.
âHelp me! Help!â
Godwinâs fingers closed about his wrist. His lips moved.
âHelp! I need another medic!â
Godwinâs hand was shaking and it took him a moment to realise that it was deliberate. Sixsmith moved closer again, putting his ear next to the stricken manâs mouth. âWhat is it?â
âIâm⊠sâŠâ
âItâs alright. Stay alive and I can yell at you later.â Sixsmith forced a smile.
Godwinâs eyes flickered. They grew wider.
His hand convulsed and suddenly he was trying to scream.
âWhatâs wrong? Stay with me!â
A shadow was his only warning.
The wire yanked against his throat, dragging him backwards. Â Sixsmith choked, panic foaming to the surface, hands going to the garrotte. A body pressed up against him, he felt elbows digging into his shoulder blades as they crossed their arms, turning the line into a noose. He couldnât get his fingers under the cord and now he couldnât turn.
Lashing out desperately, he hit an ankle, heard a grunt, but the stranglehold only tightened. Blood pumped in his ears, pressure building in his head, in his eyes. The taste of copper rose in his mouth and all he could understand was pain, that hot-freezing line across his throat, digging deeper and deeper until itâd slice right through to the other side. His head was a ball of expanding, filling, thundering blood and spikes and pressure â shades the pressure â shoving, inexorably blistering his brain apart until â
âIâll send Askren your regards,â said Norris.
Something popped.
The world blinked out. Â

TOCKTICK BLURB by ResidentoftheDisc/H.M
Autistic aeronaut and single father, Captain Emmett Askren has a problem.
That problem being that his ship, The Iris has been grounded for the foreseeable future, robbing him of his only source of income and now his debts are due yesterday. He needs a job with a large payment upfront or he and his daughter will be forced into the death-trap sky-harvesters which hang ominously along the coasts of the Sturm Islands.
But then, a miracle. A pair of genius inventors approach him with a proposal: they will pay off Emmettâs debts and repair his home and, in return, he will test their revolutionary new engine in the race of a lifetime. The 1880 Throgmorton Aeronautical Contest is a chance for Emmett to prove himself as both a worthy captain and a productive normal member of society.
However, to race Emmett needs a crew and a whole lot of luck. Besides the inventors, his recruits are the un-hireable, the dregs and outcasts of society. And worse, they have a brought their own baggage and murderous ghosts along for the ride.
Emmett can fly them through any storm, arcane or otherwise, but it is the dangers on the ground which he will struggle to outwit.Â

Sixsmith and Talas, my argumentative bois
Sixsmith inhaled and then pointed at the balloon. âI could hit that,â he said confidently.
Talas rolled his eyes. âOh, yes? Prove it.â
âI would if I had bullets ââ
âOh, that is convenient. You never do seem to have the bullets, do you ââ
âConvenient? Tally, darlinâ, dâyou know how a gun works?â
âProbably better than you â and do not call me Tally ââ
âTalas! Sixsmith!â Emmett threw up his hands and continued, âYouâre both adults. So act like it.â They glared at him. âPlease?â
There was some mutinous wordless acknowledgement from both, but as Emmett turned around, he heard:
âItâs a gun, Tally. Itâs supposed to have bullets. Whadda âm I supposed to do? Throw it at someoneâs head?â
âThrow it at your own. Then we all might have some peace ââ
âIâll crack both your heads together in a minute!â Emmett snapped. âSixsmith, stop riling up Talas. Talas, stop rising to the bait. If not for me âcause Iâm starting to feel like a schoolteacher, but for my kid. Set an example for Shade's sake.â
The fact the kid in question was watching the argument with the air of someone about to pull out snacks didnât help.

Wow. I did not realise just how much I needed this. Definitely was constantly told in creative writing in school that I couldnât base a character on my experiences, but I really, really want to write disabled characters because I didnât see any as a kid.Â
Except for Roman Mysteries which was my first autistic rep Iâd ever seen and I loved it.Â
Thanks so much??Â
Hi, Mr Gaiman. I hope you're alright. Probably a bad question, but I'm hard-of-hearing and autistic so I started writing a fantasy about a HoH autistic aeronaut, but now I feel guilty about writing a character similar to me. It feels like cheating that I'm not being more creative and branching out. Is this right?
Years ago, when most of what I was doing was in comics, Stephen King told me I should write a book where the lead character worked in comics. And I rejected the idea because it seemed unimaginative and people wouldnât be interested. And a year or so later King published Cell, in which the lead is a comics artist. And I read it and thought, oh but if you were telling a story with a comics artist in you could have done X, Y and Z...
One reason people like to read books is to see outside their own experience. And Iâve never read any books with Hard of Hearing and Austistic lead characters. It sounds like you can take people somewhere they havenât been before. So donât be scared to take them with you.

Tocktick Extract - Sixâs Yellow Ribbon by ResidentoftheDisc/H.M
âAre you alright?â Maia asked, biting through the thread.
Sixsmith jumped. Shaking his head, he tucked his hands behind his back and said, âYeah. Yeah. âm alright. Just⊠I⊠Iâll go.â
He didnât move from the door, shifting uneasily from foot-to-foot.
Maia frowned. âYouâre hovering.â
âWell⊠IâŠâ
âGo on.â
âYou dunât have anythinâ yellow I can borrow, do you? I know itâs not very manly or keepinâ to Empire standards anâ that with us havinâ to keep our heads down, but itâs just a politeness⊠thing.â The words came out in such a rush that Maia felt them pass through her ears and out the other side. Sixsmithâs smile was a rictus, faltering as she took a moment to process the request.
âIâve got a yellow ribbon. Would that help?â
âOnly if you dunât need it.â
âI donât. Itâs alright.â Maia waved her hand towards her basket. âHave a rummage around in there. Itâs all scrap.â
âTa,â Sixsmith deflated and flashed her an apologetic look. âYouâre the best.â
âThatâs sweet.â She could feel her face heat up in embarrassment. âAnd Iâm nay the best.â
âOh, you are. Dunât sell yourself short, darlinâ.â
Putting aside her shirt, Maia eyed Sixsmith as he began to root through the fabrics. âWhat do you need it for? Howâs it polite?â
âUh,â Sixsmith scratched his scars, âitâs a Taiyeku custom. Colours mean pronouns. Itâs better than assuminâ, you know? Not that we can really do it proper here, but I saw the kids had theirs on anâ I thought, well, itâs not polite, is it? Me not wearinâ mine too. If they canâŠâ he huffed an amused breath and added, âBeen a while since Iâve worn one. The powers that be dunât tend to look very kindly on it.â
âWhatâs yellow?â
âHe. Him.â
âMale?â Maia couldnât stop the hesitation in her voice.
Sixsmith shrugged and waggled a hand. âSometimes. Is this alright?â
âAre you⊠not male?â
âI am. Not everyone is. Thatâs why itâs pronouns, see?â Sixsmith grinned. âHard gettinâ used to, I guess, for you lot.â
âA bit. It sounds... kinda nice, though.â

Ah, Six slotting very nearly into Catagory 1 as his dumbass chaotic energy is way higher than his student.
No more wise old mentors. From now on your mentor options are
1. old mentor that turns out to have at least the same amount of chaotic dumbass energy as the protagonist
2. mentor that is the same age or younger than the protagonist and is only in the position of mentor because they have experience with one specific thing, but in every other respect they are just as young and dumb as the protagonist is

Tocktick character introduction number #7
The racers in the Contest come from all across the Empire and beyond - all competing in a series of agility, speed, and performance tasks to win the coverted Throgmorton Shield and receive patronage from the rich and powerful who gather to watch the skill (and in some cases, the carnage) displayed by the captains and their crews.Â
@rebelqueenofthediscovery, and if anyone else wants to be added to this list, please tell me!
