Got a question today about the equipment I use on my bench. Tried to reply to it, but if I wanted to do more than just list names of devices, I ran out of letters. :)

On the off chance that more than one of you are curious about the equipment I use to do my restorations, I decided to do a quick post about my workbench. So... here are a few pics of the bench... going from left to right on the upper shelf we have:

Eico RF generator, which creates RF signals across a wide range and is primarily used to align radios for best reception. Next to that is a Heathkit signal tracer which is used to follow signals through a circuit. Below those is a Leeds/Norhrup resistor substitution box. I don’t use it very much, but it has cool dials on it and is potentially useful, so I keep it around.

Next to those is an HP oscilloscope, and above that is an HP benchtop multi-meter. Next to the scope is an early HP audio generator which isn’t working right now. I have all the parts to fix it, but just haven’t gotten around to it. On top of the audio generator is a B&K frequency counter which I use to double-check my analog RF generator when doing radio alignments. At the top of that stack is a Heathkit wave generator. It creates sine, square and sawtooth waves for troubleshooting circuits.

On the lower shelf, again left to right are:

Agilent DC power supply. This was something that my work was getting rid of because it was broken. Took it home and after some troubleshooting with a friend got it working again. Mostly I’ve used this for a tube filament supply for battery radios when I’m testing them.

On top of that power supply are a few analog multi-meters. Next to that is an RCA isolation transformer which is important for working on old equipment and reducing potential shock hazards. Then there’s my HP variac, which I use for slowly powering up the radios and equipment I work on. Then there’s my Heathkit VTVM (Vacuum Tube Volt  Meter) which is also helpful for aligning radios and generally taking voltage and resistance measurements.

Next to the VTVM is a Weston Electric decibel meter which I’ve never used, but purchased long ago because I like old meters. Above that is my Heathkit audio generator. I’ve restored it, so that’s the one I use when I need to create an audio signal. Lastly is my Hickock tube tester. Got this for free cause it was in really rough shape. The box it came in was pretty shot, so I built a new one, restored it electrically and now use it as my primary tube tester.

Most of this stuff I picked up for cheap because it was broken. This meant for  a long time, my bench was largely ornamental. It’s only recently that I’ve actually fixed most of the equipment you see here. I’ve got more pieces of test gear stashed away in my shop. These will be future projects for sure!

Musings: writing and stress responses

Not so much a thought about how to write a stressed character, but I guess I could do that some time too.  This is more me thinking about my personal life the last month or two.  

There is a fine line for me somewhere in overwork where I become extremely productive.  When I am content I produce little of skill or value and I find it hard to make my mind focus on a single task.  

However the same thing happens when I work too much.  I’m miserable and utterly unproductive.  I have never had a job that produced in me a consistently productive level of misery.  

I honestly regret that because one of my worst habits as a writer is that when I conceive of a story I usually have a number of scenes and aspects in my mind from the get go and only when I’m producing those scenes and aspects is my work quick.  Everything flows and I’ll spend hours putting word to page regardless of fatigue or contentment.  

The connective tissue is created only very slowly.  And for that I’m sorry for my readers.  

On a related note, “review whoring”.  I recently saw something someone wrote where they said a few things that were very interesting to me.  First, was a kind of garden variety “I wish I could write, but I don’t have that talent”.  This is, on its face, laughable.  Especially to me.  in my youth I was so absolutely adamant in my refusals to write that even producing a one page essay was a work of multiple hours even if the paper was off the cusp.  Simply due to the unfamiliarity and distaste for the action. 

Let me say this, if you can recognize good and bad writing, you can write yourself.  You merely have to begin.  It took me about 100000 words of fiction before I’ve produced anything I’m the least bit proud of.  But all of that was a labor of force.  and along the whole way I was reading.  If you read, you can write.  The difficulty is in the starting.  But back to that provocative thing I noted.  

It is Deathly difficult to maintain the will to write the parts you are not specifically looking forward to in my opinion if you’re doing it solely for yourself.  Writing is not a purely personal act.  Since time immemorial storytelling is a group effort.  You write for your audience.  the internet has done a lot of good for putting you in a place to actually find eyes for your story, but the utter lack of feedback can be demoralizing.

I will speak of fanfiction.net because that’s where I post my work.  I can see that someone has Favorited my story, I can see that someone has placed an alert on my story, I can tell that people are reading it, how many times the story was accessed and how many people accessed it and where they were from.  But I can’t see their faces. I can’t hear their complaints, see their gripes, or share their wonder at the twists I have placed before them.  It is a soulless interaction.  Reviews change that.  It’s like suddenly the nameless numbers have a person behind them and I can for a moment see my story through someone else’s eyes.  I understand the people who hold their story hostage for reviews, I don’t like it, or condone it, but I understand it. 

Please, if you like a story, don’t just hit favorite, or 5 stars or something like that,  Take a moment, even if you’re on your phone and drop a review, even just a sentence means the world.

Question 1: Are you named after someone? 

So my name as far as i know came from a little girl my mother had when she worked in a nursery(is that how you call it???) the name of that little girl was Madalena and i think it stuck with my mom until i was born.

Question 2: When was the last time you cried?

I actually dont know... i almost cried yesterday while reading some sad fanfics...but i didnt cry so...

Question 3: Do you have/want kids?

Actually yeah i do, i always did want kids.

Question 4: do you use sarcasm a lot?

YES in pretty much every sentence i say, and then the people who dont know me very well dont get when i’m using sarcasm or not.

Question 5: What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Everything? I tend to look at the eyes and how they react when i talk to them, their manerisms to, for example the way they stand, if they have tics, and like hmmm how do i explain this... the felling they give me when i’m around them?(is that weird, the best word i can think of is aura??? but im not sure if thats right.) And I go alot with the first impression thing, if i dont like something about that person at the beggining i tend not to get to close to them.

Brown and they get a slightly olive green tone in summer

Both? I can get tired of happy endings but i get terrified with scary movies.

Being able to Draw and write well??? (at least thats what my mother tells me) i very creative, i can like create a story out of nowhere in a couple of minutes, i dont want to look to full of myself(?) but i have a really nice memory and i’m a sponge when it comes to things i like.

The Problem with Slow Burn Fics

Is it just me or are slow burn fics just incredibly labor intensive to write??? I’ve only published like 5 fan fiction stories total since I started writing fanfiction back in June. But so far my fics total over 456,961 words all together. With three of them being over 50,000 words at least. Like WHAT? Why am I so LONG WINDED? And why does it take forever for my characters to get together??? The WIP I’m working on right now is 15 chapters in (76,715 words mind you) and my main characters haven’t even kissed yet...like I don’t even know what to say for myself.... HELP!!!!

You should really talk to the adults sooner when you feel crummy, I'd assume either the ring and Jason's pit blood cancelled each other out, or that you got an infection from being stabbed by dirty glass.

Your lung was stabbed when you ended up stabbed in the chest. After that's all fixed up, usually there isn't pain of the levels you had described. Especially after being healed. But if you were hurt and an infection developed while you were healing... It should be self explanatory.

Furthermore, the weapon used wasn't just a regular knife but a dirty bacteria ridden shard of glass. Infections come from germs so again... self explanatory!

It could all be a coincidence but the emotionalness, the throwing up, the constant nausea, the coughing and the coughing up blood. They're all key symptoms of an infection in the lungs.

Antibiotics should fix it, you may need surgery, you probably won't die if you get treatment sooner rather than later. Get well soon Richard!

I had this very naïve daydream in my head of what it would be like when I finished my first novel. I would tap out that final period and boom, it’s done. Suddenly I would go from writing to writer and my words would magically end up as a book. In reality, that actual writing process was the shortest and easiest part. I finished the first draft of this book in about three or four months and it was 245,000 words then! It’s taken almost another 10 to edit it. It’s hard to be a perfectionist and an artist. I’m finally at the finish line but I know six months down the road I’ll think of something that I would’ve done differently.
